This is my reread of the Lockwood and Co. Books, organized by @blue-boxes-magic-and-tea, I'm posting bits and pieces that jumped out at me when I was reading The Whispering Skull.

Part II - Chapters 5-9

You can kind of understand Lucy’s frustration. A ghost of someone who trusted and loved the wrong person was in her head just six months ago. Lucy herself was used and betrayed by people she trusted before, people in a position of power over her. And Lockwood is her boss and has this neutral, easy, apparently friendly manner with anyone he needs for the betterment of his agency, even when he can’t stand them. So it’s understandable that Lucy feels unsure of her role in Lockwood's life and wants to crack his facade to see something real. It’s not just that she has a crush on him (although it is that too), she needs to know how Lockwood really is because for her there is safety in that. Lucy’s biggest fear is trusting the wrong person (and this includes herself) and underappreciated part of Lucy is that she is pretty observant when it comes to human behaviour (she often doesn't draw the right conclusions from what she sees, because she’s so young and inexperienced, but she notices a lot) and this is out of self preservation. You can see it with her friendship with George - once she realizes what kind of person George is, she studies him extremely well. By the fourth book she mentions she can read him from his mannerisms at a glance. But Lockwood is so closed off she doesn't have that reassurance with him. And it makes her wonder, even this early on, if the trust and bond she develops with him is real.

And Lockwood lies SO EASILY, the utter shit that he is! He immediately senses the kind of image of them the possible clients want and delivers it, spinning lies on the spot with very little. It’s very funny, of course, but you can see how it can get to Lucy because it feeds into her insecurities and fears. If Lockwood lies so easily, what else does he lie to her about?

This is all funny because Lucy herself is 100% not averse to having a more empathetic view of Visitors. She formed a bond with Annabel in the book before this one and released her into the Portland Row basement to chat. She later develops a whole method to better communicate with Visitors and aid them in passing on in a more dare I say “humane” and less violent way. She develops a friendship with a Type Three. So this attitude to sensitives and people more empathetic to Visitors is probably less about the different psychic approaches to The Problem and more about the fact that kids associated with them project a more feminine image that Lucy actively dislikes. Lucy’s issues with “other girls” are long, complicated and likely are an extension of the trauma she faced at the hands of her “pretty is not your profession” abusive mother. She’s self conscious about her looks and her limited finances allow her little room to experiment with clothing and fashion, so she relies on the respectability of her career for validation and favours utilitarian looks. She's embarrassed by her clothing and appearance compared to someone like Kat who also looks more affluent professional and she’s dismissive of anything more traditionally feminine, such as jewelry, long hair and make up. To Lucy there are two polar opposite ways girls can look - feminine or agency utilitarian. And those two do not meet in her mind. Mixed into this is a territorial streak a mile wide - anyone Lockwood is giving positive attention, even if it is in the context of a job and fully part of his responsibilities as a head of the agency, is regarded with hostility and immediate dislike.

But I’m sure it’s nothing and is not setting up anything at all.

In these books we almost never see adults being on the kids' side, but when we do they tend to be working class adults who know what it’s like to be exploited for their labour. Norris here is about the only person who supports these kids in their objections. Saunders, despite employing them ostensibly for their psychic abilities, completely refuses to believe them when they attest to serious psychic issues. He needs work done at any price, he barely complies to any safety laws, he doesn't listen to qualified people he views as beneath him and he doesn't care if his employees live or die. Anyone who ever had a menial labour job will no doubt find all this very familiar. Psychic work in these books is a stand in for any child labour. Night watch jobs are more akin to kids working in service or factory jobs (long hours, mind numbing, low pay, hazardous, few protections or rights), but agency work with its trappings of glamour covering a horribly corrupt and psychologically traumatizing labour under supervision of abusive adults and mega corporations, is closer to something like the entertainment industry. Lucy’s backstory is basically that of someone like Jennette McCurdy, but with with ghosts and swords.

Let’s hear it for Norris and his respectable way of addressing Lucy and bringing to her attention an serious issue! I’m going to start a second, much smaller, running tally of any decent adults Lockwood and Co. encounters who actually help them and treat them well. So far, if we count Arif and his leftover donut donation policies, we’re up to like … 2

Lockwood is honestly in a pretty unenviable position here. He’s friends with George and Lucy and he’s their boss. He cares for them deeply but he has to be strict with them and reprimand them as no friend could or should do. He usually is pretty good at this dual role, but at times he fails and it’s no wonder, it’s an extremely hard line to walk! This is again subtle foreshadowing, when Lockwood can’t quite manage a good balance between “friend” and “agency boss” there is usually fallout and feelings get hurt.

These kids just don’t stop with the sass, even exhausted and running on 4 hours of sleep OMG

Barnes was introduced as a totally negative character in The Screaming Staircase and throughout the books small hints of his better sides are revealed and he undergoes his own arc, but personally I'll never be able to fully turn around on him as a character because of shit like this. He is an excellent portrayal of a decent man worn down and made unpleasant by an awful system he’s fallen into propping up when what it needs is to be dismantled. He’s desensitized to children dying and getting injured and comes off as rude, uncaring, pedantic and mean. And this has repercussions, as his opinions trickle down and create a toxic working environment. If he treated the kids better then others would treat them better as well. For example I think Kipps changed how he views Lucy exactly here, after this rare positive comment by Barnes. He completely ignored and was intentionally rude to her for two and a half books, but because he hangs on every word Barnes says from this point on he suddenly starts to acknowledge her and even tries to recruit her later. Barnes’s constant disparaging of Lockwood and George feeds into Kipps’s already significant dislike of them, and I think he disliked Lucy and ignored her by association but as soon as Barns complemented her Kipps did a 180. This is because at this point Kipps doesn't have much of a personality aside from what he can siphon from his superiors. And this is by Fittes design. This kind of stunted but ambitious young adult is an intentional product of the agency system.

Lockwood is just as observant as Lucy, but Lucy unlike Lockwood has literally no poker face whatsoever and I think that’s pretty funny. I also love George's complete and sincere lack of shits to give about literally anyone criticizing him about something as trivial to him as his appearance. Lucy says she doesn't care about her looks but obviously very much does. George just doesn't. Multiple people try and fail to hurt him with this. What is a true pain point for him is his academic abilities.

My headcanon is that Bobby grows up to be huge. Like, well over six feet. I have a cousin like that, teeeny-tiny as a kid but puberty hit him like a sack of doorknobs. I just think it would be funny if Bobby was the same way. He’s only ten here after all.

[Opinion] The Cyber Effect : Gaming Freak Outs – An unacceptable bias (Mirror from electrogeek95.wordpress.com)

I am reading this book right now: The Cyber Effect written by Cyber-psychologist Dr. Mary Aiken.

As a Software Developer and an internet enthusiast, this is a book that goes pretty much biased against my profession and field of interest In fact, in the very first chapter, it kind of prides itself on its bias. However, I decided to read it nonetheless – it’s important to get to know a view outside (in this case, opposed) to the bubble of your life and your life’s interest.

While I found a lot of deliberate opinions and facts during the course of my reading, the nature of their bias was moderate at most. However, I reached a section which broke that barrier pretty blatantly.

It is titled “Gaming Freak Outs”. Depending on your version of the book (and variety of print), you can find that section on page 77.

The section begins with an example of a blonde German boy. A gamer, whose recording of an intense freak out was posted on a popular YouTube channel – Gaming Freak Outs. Long story short, that boy was hitting his keyboard and shouting at the game during the course of his play. As the author rightly points out, he is freaking out because the game is going rather poorly. The author uses the example to accentuate in further paragraphs that these ‘all-engrossing online/multiplayer games’ make gamers distressed and often more focused on success in-game rather than adhering to real life obligations, unless, to the gamer’s dismay or anger, interrupted by a sibling or elder. Especially for children at a very impressionable age.

While this is true for online games, this is true for any kind of game – be it sports outside, indoor sports, or night outs with friends. These days, interactions with players in online games have more or less replaced interactions with boys/girls in the neighborhood playground. But even when they were popular, children used to get irritated when called back home or given strict time deadlines by their parents. These characteristics, while I agree have been amplified by the addictive nature and minimal physical fatigue of online games, are not something new. My complaint with the author here is not her description of the amplitude of this issue, but rather her subtle indication of these phenomena as a creation of online games.

In the last sentence of the next paragraph, the author writes – There are many videos of small children, under nine, shouting words they shouldn’t know yet while being pulled away from violent shooting games like Call of Duty, which they shouldn’t be playing. I was a bit surprised here as popular Call of Duty Multi-player titles such as Modern Warfare (I don’t know which edition the author is referring to as she doesn’t mention the video or the specific edition of the game) usually have a PEGI rating of 16+ or 18+ and are rated as mature. So the question to ask is: how is an under nine year old granted access to this game? If you expose a nine year old to a multi-player game meant for adults, is it any surprise that s/he will learn words that “they shouldn’t know yet”? Is the problem here the game itself, or the guardian’s lack of proper internet monitoring for their child? It is surprising that a cyber-psychologist is speaking like a mother who doesn’t know too much about this multiplayer game thingy or the internet.

The author continues in further paragraphs to make the point that these freak outs cruelly recorded by people who are supposedly “loved ones” and “friends” of the gamer, are posted online. The author says that the gamer will be possibly humiliated for the rest of his life over this video posted online. This didn’t happen when “sore loser” kids used to play outside. Their wounds were soothed and there was no record of the incident anywhere. But now these videos are forever on the internet – privy to multiple uses for repeated humiliation of the gamer in question.

Here let me ask you this question: How many of these videos really go viral? I agree that in its initial phases, these videos were far and few. However, over the years, with the rapid expansion of the internet, so many of these videos are uploaded every day that ‘that video of Klaud freaking out in CS:GO’ gets lost in a sea of similar videos. Maybe it lies in the consciousness of the people for a while, but then it, is erased away. Besides, considering YouTube and it’s super broken and exploitable system of copyright take down of videos, such videos can be easily taken down with a take-down request by the subject of ridicule. In some cases, the “victim” even accepts the video as a little joke and laughs it off (I stay neutral with this attitude though: some people are more sensitive about their image than others and that is not wrong). After all, the best way to kill a joke on you is to participate in it and laugh at yourself.

Plus, these “supposed loved ones” recording these freak outs is a very similar phenomenon to the videos of fails going on shows like “America’s Funniest Videos” and the similar shows (even channels on YouTube). It’s not cruel, it’s just different from what the author is used to.

After I had read this section, I had to write about it. It ignores so many aspects of such a complicated and nuanced subject and, I believe, is a little above the acceptable level of bias.

The author does make quite a few valid points and does point out problems of the gaming culture. But she also makes a lot of blatantly opinionated and biased observations without delving in deep into the issue. Not that I have done a good job of the same, but at least I scratched the surface of both sides of topic – the reason I wrote this is because I believe she failed to do even that minimal level of analysis.

The Misandry of Norming Sex By Antirape Females Too Cowardly To Not Confront Enabling/Triggering of Rapists By Female Models

The matter at debate is whether a rapist can be identified with a gender or sex , they are first a criminal and not to be generalized with the generalized concept of "male". Rapists that are infact of the male sex are not being protected as victimized by their triggered stimulations. Instead a rapist is acknowledged as voluntarily choosing to be motivated in the crime of rape and other sexual violence, or unable to inhibit such drives by nurturing, beliefs of entitlement to coitis; not sex;  or genetic defects of additional arousal of the hindbrain pons,and  subcortical areas.

Women, you have rapist enablers among you and I don’t mean victim blaming

The United Nations Arms Treaty (UNODA)  preamble states:  " The states party to this treaty …. Bearing(sic:Bear) In Mind that Civilians, particularly women and children, account for the vast majority of those adversely affected by armed conflict and armed violence,"  The document was written as if to archetype the entire Earth's male population as third world. Of course males are also among the vast majority injured in conflict.  Don’t ever fall to the stupidity that only one male archetype exists. Those of low education reading the document are led to presume their lives are excluded from innocence. 

Males in protective militias in remote villages are most certainly injured by armed violence. We've had two world wars by which very few of the combatants were female. Males are most certainly among the victims.  Males-of-color are shot for wearing gang colors without being affiliated with gangs. Male are shot for being alleged sideboys of a cheated-on wife.  

Take this matter to heart. If a male is told there is no empathy for his plight, he first resents the origin of the concept. Everyone has expectation to raise weapon in defense.  If to have a weapon he becomes as evil as his oppressor; then the oppressor is projected upon the masculine gender role. In this document it was done so recklessly and without concern to norms of the first world. The crimes of Stuprum and Raptus are each early identities of the nonconsensual assault relating to the genitals and coitis. Rape has been a crime consistantly prosecuted among actual Citizens of a country at least as long as the times of Emperor Julius Caesar and Hammurabi. It transitioned from a respect of property to seeing the female of a hominid personification. A personification in flesh and blood that conservatives still refute despite their love of corporate personification.   If there are subsets of rape demanders, they do not represent the average first world male.

 The Steubenville date rape/gang rape story raises the failures of teens. Teens are not men and while they may very well be the result of the parents nurturing, the fundamental effect of politics declaring gender roles is in play. In the 2016 election , Ohio was listed a redstate. In 2012 and 2008, Ohio was listed a Blue state for Obama. Keep in mind the gerrymandered boundaries of these districts has been a constant factor. State voting trends are no longer a reliable statistic. If antirapist activist will make a media statement, lets keep in mind the target of that message are not men no matter how the football coach chooses to identify them in the locker rooms.

 I've chosen to directly confront the sexism and misandry of females taking direct attack at males as presumed rapists and not at females for being rapist enablers.  The signs at Pro Choice rallies read " My body, my choice". I very much agree. The concept does not extend to " My clothes , my message". No way, girl. If females will be taking the political fight against rapists then her reluctance to attack the fashion model industry is sorely a failing grade.

Again, Women, is this a usual pose of comfort when not doing yoga? Perhaps its called the " how I feel sexy looking for my contacts"? No. In reality, both these poses sell sex and affiliate sex with a type of clothing brand. The brand logo includes messages of sex.

 A female being marketed Guess jeans is given an empathic cue that femininity looks like this. Really? Was she posed by a female? This models name is Hailey Baldwin. Is it a pose females would want normed as their identity? 

 Who is making most of the decisions of advertisement staging?  Can we definitively say this image of a female with no top in a jean jacket was not ever intended to appeal to males? All I have to do is compare attention rates between males and females as who gives the image more time. I repeat again, the clothing and its message are not owned by the female and no argument of body consent can change that. Consider the message a socialized message; a trigger of attention. My angle is females are either naive or blissfully stubborn that their choice in clothing has no effect on the people around them relative to the messages made of brands or the genre or clothing the genre represents. Exhibiting cleavage is calling attention to it . If its being flaunted then flaunting is happening.  Common themes of selling clothes suggest they should take the attention of everyone in the room. 

Don't even try divide the female fashion model from the system of profiling women as sex objects.  I can only summarize the choice to do otherwise as either confirming or insisting women are cattle of their own devices. Since fashion models themselves have chosen money over integrity, so falls the tv anchors waiting out one pissed off victim. A payout settlement continues to be a more preferred outcome than justice. Either Professional Women who allegedly report news don't know how to report a rape or they consciously choose their profession despite its incompatible standard at no point being confronted when absolutely called for. I'm not so certain Rosa Parks is the same women to confront a white rapist but ,damnit, its very clear Caucasian women keep nodding and valuing their credibility under the dome of harassment. Among celebrities, personalities and anchors the professional white female is a classist before a feminist. A sycophant for her own camera angle.

Now I will interject my own findings that the permission of bikinis and thongs but not nudity leads to call a fetish of the female body. For whatever reason the sexualized nipple is that of a taboo. Or instead her unclothed portions are considered the christian parts and her nipple is isolated to ridiculous concepts of traditional housewife nursing. I call this phenomena of creationist hypocrisy “ Nipple Suspense Fetish”.  Its hypocrisy for the same antinude beach protestors are off to the strip club once their wives are in for the night.

Females want to insist rationalizing consent with the males among them has something to do with convincing rapists not to be criminals. Criminals are criminals; either they opt to be or the don't. Rapists are opportunists. If the girl wearing all black most easily blends into the shadows of streetside bushes and she's wearing ankle breaker heels, she has most certainly made a message of opportunity about herself. A Criminal opportunity, not a sex opportunity. Our problem of defining rape is a label of sexual assault. Its not. Rape is Victimizing Autoeroticism. It’s a Violence Against Women Act. Rather our congress should have the sense to pen an END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT, idiots.  

If beauty is a status of comparison to fashion models then fashion models must bear some serious antirapist hate for being objects. They let themselves be seen as easy, for excusing their own health for the needs of a haute couture dysmorphic designer. A few years after the fashion model admits 'suffering from depression' , she plays a shield for a broken industry plagued with sex trafficking, sexual harassment, statutory rape, anorexia, prostitution, and worse of all the monopolist insider status of the waif somatoform female herself. She's in it for herself and lets the predators run free to sack her competition for work. The fashion industry is rape enabling. Don't let these current stars of the runway take a smug activist role. The backstage area of the fashion runway is diseased with the profiteered oppression of women. Expendable  women, as the slasher flicks will have them. In one day and out the next as the fashion industry will treat its designers and its clothes hanger people. 

 Cheapness follows their type; from designer to intern. Cheap on raw textiles, the designers exploit smaller women. Cheap on materials, some runways crumble under the anorexics. Cheap on integrity, fashion models hide their abusers and callers. They want to keep working for their fame. Not ever did they consider their absence in front of fans would raise questions and an adequate time to socially indict their harassers. Where's the courage, models? So you call yourselves feminists. Pornography actresses and nude models have a content specific sliding scale to be scorned as well.

 Yes, there are rapists out there. They have their preferred porn. In Japan an anime character sports the power of "time stop". Approximately 12 years ago there was 5 or 6 timestop porn videos. Now it’s a thriving category. Rape fantasy was already a theme but not nearly so blurring of morality as the timestop porn genre. Rape is making a comeback through the concept of unaccountability for crimes. Raping women isn't the only thing respondents admit in online surveys. What they would do if they could stop time. Included to the list here is a followup survey of what would you do if you could stop time.  The Giant Bomb forum was quite different. Respondents generalized being a male inclined them or forgave them to believe nonconsensual  sex was inbounds. They were yet not a majority. What is implied in that context is a female drew attention to herself. Among those that did find appeal of her clothed or almost clothed body was the attention was thereof a rapist. Y'know; The criminal. How overlapping are the Ven circles rapists and alcoholics? Very. A rapist alcoholic would most certainly blame the female because an alcoholic never takes responsibility for anything.

 In a Psychology Today web article by Dr Leon Seltzer The Triggers of Sexual Desire: Men vs Women,  the author spends time addressing an Ogas and Gaddam research determining "males have more connections to the subcortical reward system than females do."  The 2011 publication " A Billion Wicked Thoughts: What the Worlds Largest Experiment Reveals About Human Desire"  had some valuable statements that Seltzer and I determine need to be forwarded to the population at large. By my own determination, female oppression could render a circumstance that women’s subcortical connections decreased over the turn of industrialization and formalized classism.

 The webarticle indicated Ogas and Gaddam found male arousal to be a solitary affair separate from seeking relationships.Each existed in parallel. "He gives no thought to actually sharing his erotic predilections and experiences with friends." Strike another point for me in calling a rapist an autoeroticism based criminal. A males libido is said to be "ignited" by a particular image or stimulus after websurfing through porn images and videos. If that is true, (certain) males might have a heightened sensitivity  toward stimulus like the hair trigger of war PTSD. A car backfires and the veteran dives for the ground. Conditioned aboriginal times of mesopotamia might have lingering ambush attack phobias/traumas that make rapist demographic similarities seem scattered and inconclusive. Rape might be genetically affixed to those males with extreme sensitivity to images or videos to which they find most arousing. Its not an excuse, however. How politics fits into that schema I can only jab at.

 Among a few other points, Seltzer also addressed the males authenticity cue of the research. Males had to feel the pleasure a female received from him was real. We already have cases of the male gender role being nurtured in sport to continually persist at goals. Sometimes males mistake the living being and her free will as an object to be harassed/persisted until she gives in to the fatigue of effective frequency. Heck, effective frequency is how the American election system is corruptly organized. The finger keeps pointing to a common element of subjective self entitlement fraudulent validity despite no supporting facts.

With that in mind, a male's hangup to persist or harass a female might be rooted in continually stressing or seeking the favored characteristics that ignited their interest. Ogas and Gaddam can be made a reference of sex harassment motivation inquiry. If the male’s mind of relationships and libido are separate occurrences, each have appeal with the same female and inquire for her attention twice as often for its own authenticating and empathic gratification. The well male is seeking to authenticate his libido with the effect on the sexual partner. The rapist only “ruins” the victim as a cum dumpster of his autoeroticism

I want to have an eyebrow raised at Weinstein then as if to fap infront of an unwilling actress, some term of unwellness wanted regard. Perhaps coerce physical interaction with his naked bits? He demanded not to feel embarrassed but conclusively did the opposite for himself. It seems he's age obsessed about his sexual performance that he intended to validate it for himself with witness instead of rely on continual meetings and seduction. Anyone not especially desperate might consider casual ease more effective if he had empathy at all. For the fapping in front of the actress matter, Weinstein's behavior reeked of psyching himself up for sexual dominance like a pathological liar opting to gouge out his eyes and ears and seek his wants obliviously.  

Male cues of rape and sex are being blurred. If you are a female, you consideration of being observed has some conditions of what marketing brands and logos you adorn yourself. These are not your logos or ad messages. Sex and violence sell. When you put sex and violence together.. generically.. sex leaves and what remains is rape. Males are definitely a conduit of marketing females bodies so females marketing their bodies had better find some space for your criticism. Models are rape enablers continually absent or avoiding dispute the ad content. To chose not to blame the models and other forms of female induced misogyny is a halfassed ethic. Do you know what the end road is for half assed people? Its not default rape; I'll say that. What it is IS NOT BEING RESPECTED.  Rapists don't respect women or consent and that’s not a males guilt when he's not the criminal. No Mas.  

 Females, do be more objective about what you are confronting in the effort reducing rape. ie . Did you take the time to contact actresses that participated in rape simulation porn? If not. Amateur activism isn't going to be much effective. Refusal after Refusal

What if we acknowledged that we had fallen out of love with architecture and couldn’t remember why we loved it in the first place? That we had given up on building long ago because we had no interest in collaborating with developers, in designing money-laundering schemes or parking garages for foreign capital? And what if we told you that now we even found architectural discourse repulsive? That we had seen the logos for the oil companies emblazoned at the bottom of the biennial posters and couldn’t look away?That we had read the disinterest on the faces of the public and could relate? That we had watched academics lecture about labor practices while exploiting their assistants and overworking their students? That we had tried to warn each other about abusers and assaulters and were reprimanded for it by our heroes? What if we confessed that all this made us depressed, that we could barely summon the energy to get out of bed, let alone to work? What if we told you that we were beginning to think work itself was the problem?

2. The summer was hot. The hottest on record in Los Angeles and Montreal, Glasgow and Tbilisi, Qurayyat and Belfast—though records are easily broken these days. Everything appeared out of focus. The edges of our thoughts were blurred. According to studies, heat makes you lazy and unhappy. But sometimes your unhappiness supersedes your laziness, and sometimes your laziness indicates something about your unhappiness. We decided to try learning from our laziness.

3. It was Karl Marx’s son-in-law, the Franco-Cuban radical journalist and activist Paul Lafargue who first articulated a “right to be lazy.” He equated work, and its valorization, with “pain, misery and corruption.”He argued for its refusal. “A strange delusion possesses the working classes of the nations where capitalist civilization holds its sway,” Lafargue writes. “This delusion is the love of work, the furious passion for work, pushed even to the exhaustion of the vital force of the individual and his progeny.”

4. But, as Marcel Duchamp reminds us, “it really isn’t easy to be truly lazy and do nothing.”

5. “Sleep is a sin,” say the architects. Equipped with coffee or speed, they avoid it at all costs—sacrificing the body for the sake of the project, for the eternally recurrent deadline. When finally the suprachiasmatic nuclei demand submission to the ticking of the circadian clock, they curl up beneath their desks. They wear all black to minimize time spent worrying over clothes. They marry other architects for the sake of having a synchronized schedule. According to a recent study, archi­tecture students sleep less than any others, averaging 5.28 hours per night. More often than not, this is a performative demonstration of their dedication to their studies rather than a necessity, a time-honored ritual of masochistic devotion. In his 2013 book 24/7: Late Capitalism and the End of Sleep, Jonathan Crary interrogates the neoliberal dictum that “sleeping is for losers.” Where time is money, sleeping is “one of the great human affronts to the voraciousness of contemporary capitalism.” Architects embody this attitude, imagining the stakes of the project—a luxury condominium, an arts center—as life or death. In fact, considering that sleep deprivation has been linked to premature death, it is their own lives that are put on the line.

6. Yesterday I woke up around 8:30 a.m. and took 450 milligrams of bupropion, 50 milligrams of Lamictal, 5 milligrams of aripiprazole, and 200 milligrams of modafinil, all swallowed in one gulp of coffee. (The modafinil—a medication used to treat shift work sleep disorder, among other things—is new, added by my psychiatrist last month when I complained I was having trouble working, or doing much of anything.) A few hours later, I took 20 milligrams of Adderall. Only then was I able to write this paragraph.

7. Beginning with their schooling, architects are routinely required to invest more money than they will ever receive in compensation and workplace protections. While the typical college student in the United States accrues an average of $29,420 in student debt, the architecture student is saddled with an average of $40,000.After graduation, the architectural employee can expect to work 70 hours a week for approximately $70,000 per year—or $15 an hour. And yet, as Bjarke Ingels has stated about the profession’s long working hours, “That’s the price you pay but the reward you get is that you do something incredibly meaningful if you actually love what you’re doing and you’re doing meaningful work."

8. In other words, architecture is a form of labor that masquerades as a labor of love. It contains within it the promise of fulfillment, of happiness. In her book The Promise of Happiness (2010), Sara Ahmed interrogates the normative function of happiness, how it serves as a means of orienting behavior and, in the process, is often deployed as a justification for oppression. That is, what it means to be happy is circumscribed culturally. “In wishing for happiness we wish to be associated with happiness, which means to be associated with its associations,” Ahmed writes. Work should make us happy and fulfilled—even more so when it’s “creative,” an assumption imbued with classist undertones. This draws young people toward architecture school; it makes the burden of debt, harsh working conditions, and low wages appear as an acceptable “price to pay.”

9. But, as the figure of the dissatisfied “CAD monkey” illustrates, the labor of architecture falls short of this promise. Conditioned to believe that fulfillment emerges from creative autonomy and expression, architects instead find themselves laboring over bathroom details or stair sections, and a sense of alienation emerges. It’s a feeling that parallels that of the industrial laborer described by Marx—more so than many architects would like to admit. In classic Marxist theory, workers are estranged from the fruits of their labor, which are taken away from them in the process of becoming rendered as commodities. Because it is understood as nonalienating work, to feel alienated in architecture becomes a sort of double-estrangement. Not only are you estranged from the labor, you are estranged from architecture itself.

10. While working as a studio manager at a New York architecture firm, my colleagues would often remark wistfully that they could rarely attend lectures or engage with discourse as I was able to do. Models, budgets, schematics, client meetings, site visits, overtime, and weekends at the studio had ravaged both their physical and spiritual capacities to participate in the field in a role beyond producing architecture with a capital A. Their passion had become their drudgery; their very own commitment to architectural work became the barrier between contributing to what they had imagined architecture could do and how it apparently must be.

11. I read somewhere that depression is the failure of your neurons to fire like they used to. There’s something ghostly to it: you have the memory of a feeling, of an association, but can’t conjure it anymore. Is there such a thing as a depression specific to architecture? How would it be characterized? I wrote a note on my phone: “The loss of belief in the possibility of designing a different world. Nostalgia for the future.”

12. To express dissatisfaction or alienation in architecture carries deep risks. For one, it could cost you your job. “If you aren’t happy, then leave. Others would kill to have your job.” It could also brand you as an outcast, as if marked by some internal failure or incapacity for feeling what everyone else does. And such a killjoy would ruin the mood of the office. That is, as Ahmed asserts, happiness is framed as a duty to others.18 Misery is contagious and therefore irresponsible. So, regardless of how overworked you are, how alienated you are from the products of your labor, how underpaid you are, how often the boss touches your ass, you must grin and bear it. There’s a reason why architects rarely organize to fight back against exploitative work conditions. Be happy, or else.13. According to Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval, a mandate to appear happy, which they term the “performance/pleasure apparatus,” underwrites neoliberalism more broadly.19 Today, the individual must not only produce more but also enjoy more—and, pivotally, this surplus of pleasure must be performed. Pleasure serves as a signifier of the subject’s value within a socioeconomic system in which self-edification is substituted for the social and responsibility is privatized. The flip side of the burned-out professional is the determined young architect who spends their free time attending lectures or writing essays or designing their own projects. Such work is valorized as a signal of their commitment to the field and an indicator of their value as an intellectual practitioner. This fuels a culture in which the products of extra-professional labor are exhibited in journals or galleries, often without adequate compensation. We’re told we should feel honored to have such work recognized at all. In other words, today, nothing is work, and everything is work. Even our bodies and minds are objects of labor.14. I was working hard on an essay about work—about the disconnect between discourses on architectural labor and the broader economic context in which the discourses themselves are produced. I stumbled upon an interview with Antonio Negri in which he explains how, by 1965, the architecture school in Venice had become a center for political agitation and organizing. In early 1968, students from Venice and Padua joined forces with the workers at a nearby Porto Marghera factory, the largest petrochemical complex in Italy, where “two kilometers from the most beautiful city in the world hundreds of workers were dying of cancer, literally poisoned by their work.”20 Negri states that the union of students and workers “worked out quite smoothly because they had been in constant contact for a decade: the school of architecture was a gathering place for the working class.”2115. This struggle was a major event in the development of autonomia operaia, or autonomism, a political movement that defined postwar Italian politics and in which Negri played a central role. The solidarity between the academy and the factory was a significant aspect of autonomism, which reconceived of the position of the intellectual within leftist politics. Rather than develop theories upon which to base organizing, the intellectual should learn from work, from the workers and their lived experience. In this way, the autonomists transitioned from a demand for better working conditions to a critique of work itself, in which they understood labor as a totalizing process of subjectivization that sat­urated not only the factory but all of society. They thus displaced the centrality of the static figure of the worker and the working class with an understanding of social class as always in a state of becoming, transforming alongside conditions of work. Work itself—its valorization and the power this gave it over the experience of life—was the problem. “Refusal of work means quite simply: I don’t want to go to work because I prefer to sleep,” writes Franco “Bifo” Berardi. “But this laziness is the source of intelligence, of technology, of progress. Autonomy is the self-regulation of the social body in its independence and in its interaction with the disciplinary norm.”2216. But wait, haven’t we had this conversation before? Isn’t the struggle against work what we studied tirelessly to ace our papers? We worked our bodies and our minds through the night to prove we understood what the refusal of work was about, to prove our political awareness, to garner a critical edge, to be diligent students. But clearly this feverish ambition prevented us from recognizing ourselves as the products of its failure. Why regurgitate the past if not in order to understand how it landed us here, at 4:00 a.m., exhausted, verging on panic, and for what? 17. As Berardi elaborates, struggles for autonomy produced a new monster, laying the foundations for neoliberal economics and governance.23 When workers demanded freedom from regulation, capital did the same. The monotony, rigidity, and harsh conditions of the industrial factory gave way to flexible hours and jobs (in the Global North), but also deregulation, precarity, and the withdrawal of social protections. This shift was ideological and cultural, as well as economic.18. “Work is the primary means by which individuals are integrated not only into the economic system, but also into social, political, and familial modes of cooperation,” argues Kathi Weeks. “That individuals should work is fundamental to the basic social contract.” Under the contemporary neoliberal regime, work has come to be regarded as “a basic obligation of citizenship.”24Within the realms of politics, the media, and even sociology, the persistent messaging of its importance has generated a singular world-building experience where working remains the only means of belonging. “These repeated references to diligent work,” as David Frayne remarks, “function to construct a rigid dichotomy in the public imagination.”25 Those who work acquire social citizenship, while those who do not are leeches. Within this dichotomy, work becomes a choice: there exist only those who choose to be productive and those who choose to do nothing. “Which are you? The sleeper or the employee, the shirker or the worker?”2619. What if we told you we don’t refuse much of anything? What if we told you that we ate up praise like a spoonful of honey? What if we said that the validation always evaporates too quickly? Like a sugar-addled rush, we work on the premise that the next project will leave us satiated. We make promises to stop, to slow down, to regroup, to prevent the inevitable burnout, which leaves us languid and shrouded in shame. We wonder what all the research amounts to, what the interviews and panels in galleries and lecture halls even do or mean. 20. If the autonomist refusal of work helped produce a society in which there is nothing but work, what strategies are left for us? What would it mean to refuse after refusal? To stake out a position of alterity to the contemporary work ethic in order to find the room to question where we’re going, what’s driving us, and to what end?21. To work is to be normal. To work is to be socially acceptable. In order to comprehend the commitment to the drudgery and exploitation of working life, Lauren Berlant argues that normativity must be understood as “aspirational and as an evolving and incoherent cluster of hegemonic promises about the present and future experience of social belonging.”27 To rally for any kind of alternative beyond the moral imperative to work would be to cast oneself almost entirely outside the realm of affiliation, and even personhood.22. Architecture, today at least, is like work, an end in itself. It is autotelic—or, more precisely, a constituent element within the autotelic metabolism of contemporary capitalism. The need for shelter is hardly the driving motivation behind the majority of new builds. Rather, demolition and construction serve as the two poles of a coiling system of endless production for the sake of production. Financial speculation, warfare, and environmental desecration belong to its arsenal. All together, this system constitutes a global force responsible for the lion’s share of global carbon emissions. It results in the mass displacement of the poor and marginalized. In short, shelter is not the ends of architecture—it is its collateral damage. It is a question not of architecture or revolution but, rather, of architecture or survival.23. “If design is merely an inducement to consume, then we must reject design,” said Adolfo Natalini of Superstudio. “[I]f architecture is merely the codifying of the bourgeois models of ownership and society, then we must reject architecture; if architecture and town planning is merely the formalization of present unjust social divisions, then we must reject town planning and its cities—until all design activities are aimed towards meeting primary needs. Until then design must disappear. We can live without architecture.”2824. Let’s back up a bit. What produces this all-consuming, obsessive indifference to architecture? On the one hand, the profession and the academy are sites of violence, ridden with sexism, heterosexism, racism, classism, ableism. But, perhaps even more than that, we have yet to find a work of architecture that is capable of changing the status quo. On the other hand, we’re obsessed with the belief that it could, since, at the end of the day, all architecture changes the status quo—converting land into capital, emitting carbon dioxide, displacing people. In other words, we acknowledge architecture as immensely powerful but find ourselves—and all architects or architectural thinkers—powerless. Architecture, it seems, has been swallowed up by external forces and put in the service of the smooth functioning of the city and of flows of capital. We can’t imagine an architecture capable of disrupting this. Formalism is a dead end—novel forms are just a means to produce new terrains for the expenditure of surplus capital. We have little control over program since we’re beholden to patronage. Meanwhile, criticism has no bite; speculation, no value; theorization, no impact. Academia and institutions defang all thought. 25. We believe that the problem of work is at the center of all this. The need to work—a shared condition for all but the very wealthy—means we can’t really turn down a client or an opportunity to exhibit or an adjunct teaching position. Refusal, done alone, is a privilege few can afford. But, alongside that, the culture of work has seeped into our souls. Affirmation produces dopamine. Success signals security (even if, in actuality, it doesn’t offer it). Everything we do is for the sake of capital, whether social or material. We look for opportunities to tear each other down so that we can rise up an imaginary rung on an imaginary ladder instead. We are cowards, unwilling to bite the hand that feeds us strychnine-laced food. We can’t pause to think. We’ve lost all hope in the future.26. When commissioned to write this essay, we were asked to provide “concrete alternatives” to the present—but how could we? All we can speculate on is having the time to do so. All we can imagine is a horizon, hazy and distant, in which we discover, or remember, how to refuse—together.

The best movies you’ve never seen 01 - Thank You for Smoking

In 2006 a film based on a 1994 novel of the same name written by Christopher Buckley was released to little fanfare. The film had a budget of $10,000,000, which in Hollywood terms, is peanuts. This film was Thank You for Smoking, a satirical look at lobbying by the tobacco industry in the United States of America, starring Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent/Two-Face in ‘The Dark Knight’) as Nick Naylor, a fictional spin doctor for ‘Big Tobacco’, trying to earn a living keeping people smoking, and attempting to be a good role model for his twelve-year-old son.

With J.K Simmons, William H. Macy, Robert Duval, & Sam Elliott among the cast, I was anticipating a drama with some seriously good acting, and I was not disappointed. Every line, every movement, every emotion from the cast seems genuine, feels real, and that’s what makes this movie so good. This is not a typical Hollywood film, with a protagonist we’re meant to adore and a textbook fairy-tale ending, this is a film where the hero is potentially responsible for the deaths of millions, someone we have been told is a villain due to his profession, portrayed as a human with human desires, and needs, and problems. His wife has left him, he wants to be involved in his estranged son’s life, he is kidnapped, and nearly murdered, and his confidence is betrayed by a reporter he trusts. For all intents and purposes, he is a normal person trying to live his life, and we are meant to see him that way, not as a monster, just one of us. Similarly, the senator for Vermont (played by William H. Macy) is not portrayed as a hero, he is callous, and idiotic, and hopes for death on his enemies, longs to exploit cancer sufferers, is easily defeated in public debate, and is shown repeatedly to be cruel and totalitarian.

I’m sure that when this film was produced, and indeed the book that it was based on was written, the intention was to poke pun at a libertarian, laissez faire perspective on the issue of smoking, and suggest that such a position is at least in some way idiotic. The issue is that everything stated by Nick Naylor is true, and easily defendable, that comparisons to cholesterol are well justified (leading to one of my all-time favourite film quotes: ‘The great state of Vermont will not apologise for its Cheddar.’), and that from the perspective of someone who values liberty, self-determination, and the right of choice, it is indeed important that people be allowed to do as they will with regards their own bodies, including smoking (the same could also be said for other drugs, such as heroin, marijuana, and cocaine, but that’s an argument for another day). What we have here is an example not too dissimilar to ‘Parks & Recreation’ where a caricature of a political viewpoint (Ron Swanson) inadvertently accurately displays a reasonable position, and is loved by the community he is meant to mock (libertarians). Nick Naylor is not a hero, he’s meant to be an anti-hero, except there’s really not that much ‘anti’ about him, he’s right, and the filmmakers have perhaps accidentally produced a recruitment film, detailing a position they never meant to take, and showing it to be reasonable and logical.

Influence from higher-up in Hollywood caused an alternate ending to be shot, which, in my opinion would have ruined the film, undoing all the work, and making it a lot more consumer-friendly, thankfully the original ending was kept, though I won’t spoil it here. I highly recommend that you watch this film, it is the best comedy I have seen this year, and is far more real than I anticipated, as well as joining the likes of ‘At World’s End’ & ‘Pleasantville’ for Libertarian films I can enjoyably watch over and over. 9/10.

“Gimme Dat Becky” — Phil of The Advise Show

The issue I do have is in regards to the pro-black babbling that Phil likes to do.  Now I am subbed to his channel and I do follow him on IG and Phil claims to be all about black empowerment and calling out suspected white supremacists every chance he gets.  He appears to be doing his best to adhere to the pro-black babble rule back and he appears to be having some success with doing so.  But exactly how pro-black can a man be who’s not walking around with a black queen on his arm?  That seems to go against everything in the pro-black rule book.  There are countless videos & blogs on the subject telling people that if you date anybody who is not easily identifiable as a black, you are to a bed buck or a negro bed wench.  We’ve all seen the videos, we’ve all heard the podcasts, we’ve all read the blogs.  This is what it is in Blackistan ladies and gentleman.  You cannot get up on these social media streets and start professing your undying love for black people and black empowerment and calling out every single infraction of suspected racism/white supremacy only to turn around and put on your pajamas to hop in the bed with a person who can’t sit outside for more than 10 minutes without risking skin cancer.  You just can’t be doing that on these social media streets.  You are being dishonest.  You are misleading the people, the very people who look to you to feed them and endless supply of pro-black babble to help boost their self-esteem because they refuse to often times examine themselves to discover that their biggest problems in life isn’t white supremacy…it’s themselves.  You just can’t be out on these YouTube streets racking up almost 1 million subscribers preaching black pride, black love, black this, black that and your wife looks identical to the very people you proclaim that black people need to stop getting involved with.  You just can be doing that.  Knee grows like to hop in the comments on my videos when they discover that I’m biracial and tell me all day, “YOU MULATTOS ARE A PROBLEM IN BLACK SOCIETY.  YOU NEED TO BE KICKED YOU.  ALL YOU DO IS CAUSE DISSENSION AMONGST BLACK PEOPLE!”  I’m like really, I do?  But then you go to the platform of the most bliggity black black person you can find with a significant following and discover that these people are doing the complete opposite in their personal lives from what they tell you all that they are doing.  But I’m the one causing dissension.  Ok.  I’m not causing anything.  I know what time it is and I know exactly where my position is on the totem pole of race relations.  I’m not the one out here trying to convince you all to be something you’re not or trying to tell you all to “get on code” especially if I can’t “get on code” in my own personal life.  I’m not the one doing those things.  A lot of your pro-black babblers are the ones doing those things.  But this isn’t about me.  This is about promoting, marketing, selling and exploiting the image and narrative of being pro-black for personal gain.  This is about selling an ideology to a group of people who are completely lost, confused and desperate for some type of win in society that they’ll just blindly buy into anything a charismatic person will tell them about their blackness but yet these same people refuse to do their due diligence to see if the person selling them the ideology of pro-blackness is even living up the message that they are preaching.  That is what this is about.

Dogecoin’s Creator Jackson Palmer: 2018 Is Shaping Up To Be The ‘Year Of The Fork’

Cointelegraph talked to the creator of Dogecoin, Jackson Palmer, about Bitcoin forks, the crypto community, education, and plans for 2018.

Known to the crypto community as the creator of Dogecoin, Jackson Palmer,  product manager in the Bay Area by profession and coder by passion, told Cointelegraph how he sees the future of the cryptocurrency, started as a parody and broke the $1 bln market cap in the beginning of 2018, shared his thoughts on the cryptocurrency community, and disclosed some plans for the future.

Being the one behind the idea of Dogecoin when it launched in 2013, however, Jackson made explicit his dislike for some parts of its community and culture in the following years. He started stepping back from the project in late 2014.

Cointelegraph: Looking back at the whole thing, can you tell if it was ultimately worth it?

Jackson Palmer: I started stepping back from Dogecoin and the community after a scammer, who I and others had been trying to call out as dangerous for a while, finally ran away with a lot of money from the community. Anyone who dared to raise suspicion of this character prior to that point would face a lot of criticism and negative energy online, myself included – so I’d already kind of been shouted out of the community in some sense.

This really taught me the power of greed and how many people are willing to see movements like cryptocurrency through rose-tinted goggles so long as they’re making money. Self-reflection and skepticism is at a low during these periods of mania. After our suspicions were unfortunately proven correct, I honestly just didn’t have a strong incentive to return to the fractured community in a meaningful way given everything I’d witnessed, so I stepped away entirely and handed over the keys to the Github repo etc.

Assessing whether it was “worth it” is hard… I think Dogecoin represents a good case study and hope it is utilized as a learning experience to reflect on for anyone in or newly entering the cryptocurrency space. If simply its existence or its story can help bring some more rational, fact-based thought to the hype-fueled crypto industry then I think that’s worth it.

CT: Despite not participating in the project directly anymore, do you still see a future for Dogecoin?

JP: I think we’re rapidly racing towards an over saturation of cryptocurrencies, crypto-assets and tokens, to the point that their value and inherent utility inversely approaches zero. 2018 is shaping up to be the “year of the fork” and with each fork of the original Bitcoin code I feel like every other crypto-token is slightly dissolved.

Even if just from a consumer perspective, it’s very confusing. Dogecoin is ultimately just another fork of the Bitcoin source code, which changed up the variables slightly. From a purely technological standpoint, anyone could fork that and “improve” it tomorrow by further tweaking the variables – so I think its “future” is the same as every other distributed ledger out there… pretty uncertain, easily disrupted and definitely not in a unique advantageous position to succeed.

CT: Any idea what the current core devs are working on?

JP: The devs are working on a new release that essentially brings the code base up to date with the Bitcoin code base, which Dogecoin has always ultimately been derived from. This release includes mostly under-the-hood performance and security improvements, which are important given the last major release was back in 2015.

As for Jackson himself, he is currently working as product manager in the Bay Area and recently launched a YouTube channel where he uploads educational videos on cryptocurrencies and related topics.

“My YouTube channel is mostly a passion-project to try and share the learnings I’ve personally accrued over the years. With 2017 bringing back a resurgence in interest in cryptocurrency I was facing a lot of questions everyday from friends and strangers alike. Rather than repeat those conversations over and over, I’ve found it useful to record my thoughts and share them publicly in video format.

In the process, we’ve built a fun community of people who are passionate about the technology behind cryptocurrency and I really enjoy their shared objective thinking and skepticism about all of these projects. Jackson keeps following the crypto community and comments important events in his Twitter. Commenting about the way crypto industry has been developing in recent years Jackson mentioned how sad he was about the way it’s moving right now. “Sadly, I think many of the negative traits that were present in the space back in 2013 have only been amplified in the 2017-18 cryptocurrency community.
