Rambling
Eddie Munson x Reader blurb
Warnings: Not much, just mild swearing and the fluffiest fluff ever
Summary: Eddie thinks he talks too much, but you don't mind.
A/N: This is so super short and probably inaccurate for his character, but I just wanted to write about Eddie ranting bc that's so him.
××××××××××××××××××××
Those eyes. Those warm, lively, chocolate colored eyes. Sometimes, they spoke more than his mouth did. As of right now, they were speaking with the same intensity.
About a half hour ago, Eddie called you as you were just finishing up homework. The boy sounded like he'd just ran up and down the street a hundred times.
"Hey, Eds, what's up?"
"Can I come over and scream about something? Because talking about it over the phone doesn't cut it."
"Yeah, of course."
"I'll be over in like- I dunno- five minutes? See ya then."
"Okay, bye, ba-"
He'd been too excited, to the point where he hung up before letting you reply. Eddie's elation was very evident with the way he'd been ranting about Metallica's newest album, ...And Justice For All, for the past fifteen minutes, after finally getting to listen to it on vinyl.
"--And, seriously, the-the intros to almost all of the songs are just- holy shit! Y'know what I mean? Like, especially in Blackened and To Live is to Die- especially To Live is to Die. It starts off all acoustic and mellow n' all that, then the electric fades in and it just fits. The coolest thing about that, is the song is apparently a tribute to Cliff Burton, one of the most metal bassists of all time, and I just-" Eddie cut himself off to look up at you from his wild hand gestures.
"Keep going." You replied simply, hand on your cheek as you ogled at him with utmost adoration.
Those big eyes stayed staring at you for a moment before he spoke up again, hands frozen in mid air.
"I'm rambling again, huh?"
"I never said I didn't like it."
"But, do you even understand what I'm talkin' about?"
You stayed silent for a moment, taking in the sight in front of you. His chest in that Black Sabbath tank-top moving just slightly faster than it usually would because of how much air he needed to rant non-stop, cheeks lightly flushed with both embarrassment and excitement.
"I don't need to understand what you're talking about to understand how much interest you have in it. It's cute." You smiled gently, watching the soft, pinkish hue to his cheeks grow just a little more prominent.
××××××××××××××××××××
He's so me. (I literally wrote him in this)

Ranking Korn Albums to preoccupy myself
14. The Nothing - think I heard it once
13. Serenity of Suffering - think I heard it once
12. Untitled - SYOTOS's boring brother. Bozzio plays some drums and that's probably the only notable thing.
11. The Paradigm Shit - think I heard it once
10. Requiem - moder Korn like the one's I heard once, but I was compelled to spin a couple times.
9. Path of Totality - The dubstep one! Ok a transparent attempt to trend jump, but they got the trend's pros, so it's a solid dubstep album.
8. Korn III - a return to roots is usually a sign of desperation. This one's fine, but reminds you of the better Albums they're duping.
7. Life Is Peachy - classic Sophomore slump. Got gold, but a lot is piss take filler.
6. Take a Look in the Mirror - running on fumes. Definitely their last album when Nu Metal was relevant and a sign why the genre was losing steam. It's also a return to roots album that doesn't connect. But! It's a testament to the band that at the height of their skills they could autopilot into some hooks. And Yall Wanna Single rules.
5. Follow the Leader - It's also a testament that the album they recorded in a bender was their breakthrough. Like... there's a few tracks that sound it. But mostly this is a great Nu Metal album. And the last time they really let the hip hop influence shine.
4. Untouchables - Korn with like a Boston esque attention to sound production. The first five really show an upward trajectory in regards to atmosphere and this is pinnacle. Also listen to the MSI remix of Here to Stay.
3. Issues - Follow the Leader's grimmer soberer brother. Even for a Korn album, it's pretty dark sounding. They put FOUR tracks from this on Greatest Hits.
2. Korn - this wasn't my favorite growing up, but time after time it's just shown itself to be a sick, ugly, sludgy beast. It really sounds like methier Helmet. Funkier, too!
1. See You on the Other Side - this is a perfect storm. Aging metal band past its prime and down a man recruits dudes who wrote songs for Hillary Duff and Avril Lavigne. Sounds awful. Enter the third heat: future Nine Inch Nail, Atticus Ross. The end result is heavy. It's poppy. And it's WEIRD. It opens with a minute of reversed drums. There's bagpipe scat soundscapes. There's some trip hop. I dunno, I just love this hot mess. Bonus tracks kick ass too.

tangent that i was going to include in the tags of my last post but it got wayyy too long
the only thing i've really been able to gather of Estradasphere's political leanings is that they Really didn't like Bush lol, which hey thats a point in my book but they never specifically said why. not that they needed to. they were a deeply unserious band who bonded over their love of glam metal and soap operas they were never really about Sending A Message or anything. John was the only member of the band who was outspoken about anything, and he seems to have been leftleaning buuuut in a lukewarm pacifist ''why cant we all just get along, peace and love, bring our soldiers home'' way which i find kinda spineless IMO... at least he condemned the aids crisis?? he only started making more political music after he left estradasphere though i wouuuld say "well hey at least they werent bigots then yippee!" buuuut there were some aspects that were... well OK i wouldn't really call esphere straight up bigoted but there were some pretty distasteful things they did that i've had to reckon with. the stereotypical "native american-esque" chanting on A Very Intense Battle done by a white guy, for one and also the explicitly racist spoken word clips before and after it which Are definitely satirical, but ... idk i feel like the whole "rural america sucks, parts of this country are so backwards!" theme of Buck Fever is kinda immature, especially coming from a bunch of white californians lol. like, as someone from alabama i do get the sentiment i guess, the south does suck sometimes, but idano, it's not handled with any of the seriousness or sensitivity that such a topic probably deserves, is all. that's not even my main issue with them, though - it's the constant use of the g slur. like. come on. i'm admittedly not sure if it was widely considered a slur yet back then but it does still make it kinda cringeworthy to look at and share their old promotional materials nowadays (they mostly used it to describe their sound; romani music was a huge influence for them). also i won't mirror it here but tim makes a joke that's Sort Of Racist I Think(?) about romani people in the passion for life dvd commentary and timb agrees with it... argh. to jack their shit and then turn around and disparage them... argh. but you could make a case that they know better now - they Could have used the g slur to describe the sound of the high castle teleorkestra album but they say eastern european / romani folk music instead which is nice. i dunno, i don't think it'd be productive to #Cancel estradasphere 15-20 years after the fact ofcourse but i guess i just wanted to document somewhere my Struggle in reconciling my unfathomably deep love for the band with the fact that theyve done some shitty things. even after saying all this estradasphere is still my favorite band ever and buck fever is still my favorite album ever. idk, i don't think the whole mindset online of not wanting to listen to any problematic artists is healthy
i didn't even mention the gay/bi jokes they'd occasionally make and the fact that they'd say faggot when covering money for nothing (and the crossdressing which was Probably implicitly intended as a joke) but thats because i genuinely find that shit hilarious im not offended by it at all

dunno if this ever went through the first time i sent it (probably not 'cause tumblr wants to act funky sometimes) but i have a few song recs that you could apply to your AUs. first up: infinity by jaymes young. i wanna say your nejinaru time loop au. second: aqua regia by sleep token. I discovered this song thru cult of the lamb fanart and it just lives rent-free in my head. i don't know who this one would apply to, but it's just very good. youth by glass animals. look, i broke my heart thinking about naruto, gaara, and harry, just from the first verse so make of that what you will: boy, when i left you you were young/ I was gone but not my love/You were clearly meant for more/Than a life lost in the war
black mambo by glass animals. i get Orochimaru vibes from this song, just in general.
adore you by harry styles. your sky sickness au. mainly for this part: id walk through fire for you, just let me adore you. i dunno, i guess it's more about the feel of it.
last but not least, 2 artist recs in general, Melanie Martinez. can't pick a fave album since i love them all, and RichaadEB. dude does metal covers of game songs, and i swear 2 of the best ones are You Say Run and One Winged Angel. can't go wrong with those.
Running to write these down

!!! NIN and DC! A fave intersection of mine!! You have impeccable taste 🤌🤌🤌
Do you have any headcanons on what Jason would listen to? Personally I base my headcanons off of that one comic issue, when lil baby Jason was still squatting (? Or it was his old apartment, I’m not entirely sure. Is that still squatting? Probably. Huh. Whatever). He had a punk rock poster, which does make me think he’d like punk and metal, and I can also see rap, but like, specific rap. I dunno, does this make sense? Anyway. That was MY info dump you didn’t ask for! 🤣 all of this to also gently, with all the adoration in my heart, ask for any song or artist recs for Jason specifically because he’s my blorbo DC characters, because your brain is awesome and I greatly enjoy your thoughts! And because you’d best believe I have DC character playlists that I’m constantly updating. 🤌
ANYWAY. Your art brings me a lot of joy. BLESS. ❤️❤️❤️
TYSM!! I like to think jason listens to like. industrial (a la rob zombie or skinny puppy) or stuff like machine girl or death grips !
Personally though, THE jason songs to me are The Throne of Agony and Decent into the Inferno by Foetus. The lyrics. the drama. i desperately need all my red hood art to look the way these songs sound. Foetus is very jason to me in general but these two songs. God.
Also reccing the Metropolis album by Sister Machine Gun for general gotham vibes and bc its my favourite smg album teehee

2. Do you still buy CDs (or other physical media)?
I do! I actually still buy *blank* CDs and burn stuff to play in the car (although we finally figured out how to make the USB port play nice so that's less of a priority). I think I'm most likely to buy CDs from small indie bands at small events or live shows? Or like when I went to Meow Wolf I *HAD* to have the CDs of the music they played throughout the venue and the arcade. Also a few years ago I decided to start collecting LPs in earnest. Not like, as a BIG THING, but I bought a record player that wasn't from the thrift store and now I have a few dozen records, largely anime and video game soundtracks, but also Vaporwave and Chillwave stuff and a few "normal" bands as well.
5. Is there a song you don’t like but like its music video?
Uhhh.... I honestly couldn't think of one. OTL I dunno, I feel like these days you have to actively seek out music videos, and a lot of them are just kind of whatever. So I probably wouldn't go looking for the video of a song I didn't care for. Maybe there was a time when someone sent me a memey music video for a terrible song but I can't really think of any. :/
14. A song or album from the 50s or earlier:
youtube
Okay, this cover is from much later, but the original is from 1958. I have this whole silly headcanon from an old Spideypool Back to the Future AU that I never did anything with that involved this song, so it sticks out in my memory.
18. A song or album from the 90s:
youtube
Even though Sailor Stars hadn't been released in the US at the time I was in high school, my friends and I were the kind of nerds to get our hands on fansubs and third hand information about the final season and became low key obsessed with the Sailor Starlights. It became very important that I learn all the words to Sailor Star Fighter's image song.
19. A song or album from the 2000s:
youtube
From 2004. I saw a silly "what your favorite anime says about you" meme that said if your favorite was Samurai Champloo you think you're a little bit cooler than everyone else, and you're low key kind of right. XD I don't know if it's my favorite of all time, but I'm willing to accept that assessment anyway. This was a track I had on repeat through a lot of the 2000's
30. Songs you love to sing along to:
youtube
I don't even particularly like Metal Gear Solid 3 but I'd be lying if I said Snake Eater isn't an absolute bop.
35. A song you like in a language you don’t speak:
youtube
What else could it be? :)
47. Is there an artist you used to dislike but learned to like because of a friend’s influence?
...Huh. I think maybe not? I feel like I'm pretty instinctive about stuff like music. At most I might go from "I was unaware of this until now" to being really into it, but if I don't like something at first listen, I'm probably not going to grow an appreciation for it, since my reasons for disliking music usually has to do with how it makes me feel physically. (Stuff that's really intense like death metal and dubstep sort of makes my chest and head hurt- that's not going to change any time soon.)
64. [Send me a color and I’ll post an album cover art of that color.]
Daredevil '03 kids will understand XD

I got questions for more than one chara!
For Knox: What do you miss most about your old home?
For the hunters: Do you have any comfort foods?
For Dani: Do you have any music recommendations?
Oh gods they're all in a room together (tbh I think they'd get along..... decently. As long as Leo behaves) (I'm gonna have to put these under a readmore after Knox's answer) "Oh, that's a question. I try not to think of home often," she laughs, and it's not an entirely uncomfortable one. It's not super friendly either. "It's probably unrecognisable these days. I haven't been back over the Atlantic since I was still breathing, but one thing I enjoyed in Scotland that I have not really felt here in Los Angeles... probably the quiet. I used to live by farmland, on the outskirts of what was a big town for me then, but I think since then my perspective's been skewed. It got much darker at night there than here, I think. I remember it being so anyway. Memory's a funny girl, but she's not such a liar I can't recall the stars at night."
She tips her head in thought and recalls something. It softens her expression a little.
-- "Comfort food! Yeah, okay, uh--" Leo starts as Cody sits his fidgety ass down on the chair under him. "You're gonna hurt yourself, man." "Sorry, uh, I just... got kinda into it," he laughs a little awkwardly. "I'll just say, I'm a big chicken and rice kinda guy. Or fried fish. That stuff's always good and never gets a complaint from me," Cody grins, and then lets Leo talk. "I haven't had my favourite food in fucking years man, cause like... I dunno, nobody I know makes it right. But if you wanna sit down and take the edge off a bad night, I can only recommend a big fuckin grilled cheese, or a burger y'know? Solid and reliable and honestly make it big enough and you're forgetting whatever upset you so bad cause the food coma's knocking you into next week!" "That is a food crime, Leo," Juniper mutters from her spot somewhere nearby. "Uh-huh, I never heard you complain about grilled cheese sandwiches!" "I'd rather have a good chili." "You didn't like the last time Cody made chili!" "Midwest chili ain't good chili." The ensuing verbal discourse would go on too long to be a good read, so we'll leave them here having a Discourse(tm). -- You spot Dani shuffling through a bunch of papers. She's pretty focused but asking her the question gets her attention, and she smiles her big, unselfconscious smile. "Haha, I know you didn't just ask me for music recommendations, did you? Oh, you did? Haha, uh, right. So, how familiar are you with death metal? Wait," she folds her handful of mystic notes away into a drawer in the desk she's sat at and turns to lean her elbows on her knees. "We probably would do best starting with something that's fun for the whole family: Judas Priest. You literally cannot say no to the grand masters of thrash! You should have heard the guys on the dig whenever I busted out Night Crawler!" She shakes her head and laughs. "I mean, I know they weren't so into it but I think they liked it, they just really liked the whole 'no Daniela, you can't have the aux' angle cause they thought they were funny.... Anyway! I mean if you wanna go for something more brutal, I've got a lot here... You want it in English? I've got a bunch of weird obscure Mexican deathgrind guys here if you wanna take a look... Some of em dropped like one album before completely disappearing off the face of the earth-- here, how about these guys...?" She's unboxed the CD case, it's all over for you now. Prepare for five straight hours of the most incomprehensible rage-fueled brutality you've ever heard, in multiple languages.

AIXP - The Artificial Intelligence Experiment
I think that my comment on the first song really sums up my feelings towards the album as a whole: “Pleasantly surprised.” Often full albums can feel like a bit of a slog, especially if they’re from genres that I’m not a huge fan of. Coup d’Etat for example, which I listened to just yesterday, was more of a slog than this album was, and that album is considered one of the GOAT kpop albums. So the fact that this album was much easier (and more enjoyable) to get through is a big compliment.
The instrumental samples and vocals as a whole felt very processed, I think that’s my biggest criticism. It’s possible that I just have very messy versions of the songs; these have been converted at least once on my end, and who knows how many times on behalf of the person I got them from. But the vocals in the mellow and pretty sections never totally won me over, and the mellow sections in general always felt a Bit too coarse and processed.
I also definitely wanted more melody from the guitars, but again, I’m not familiar with the conventions of the genre so maybe that’s just something that I don’t know.
Now the stuff that I’m impressed by. The mixing was constantly making me turn the music up to the point that it hurt my ears. I dunno if that’s intentional, but for metal music I think that’s definitely a Good thing. The vocals were excellent, even if the growly vocals weren’t conventional death metal vocals, they still fit this particular sound well. I enjoyed the structure of the individual songs a lot - we had a really good mix of upbeat and mellow sections, and right as I was starting to get bored of one, it switched to another. There were only a couple of sections in the entire album that I started to get bored, and it kept my attention really well other than those.
The last two songs are definitely the highlights of the album for me, I think Hourglass is probably my favorite song overall.
I did find it kind of odd how a lot of the songs seemed to end on a slow section, even if they didn’t have one at all during the main part of the song. The transition from Hourglass to Finale was particularly jarring, maybe that could’ve been smoother. Or maybe that’s intentional. So many things that I just don’t know, because I’m not familiar with the genre! Anyway, enough rambling. Average score of 8.0 which feels exactly correct to me. Very good, could use some improvement, but still a solid four out of five stars. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.
- Alright, I feel the need to add some disclaimers here. I do not usually listen to metal of any sort, and definitely not death metal. I am, however, regularly exposed to death metal, mostly though music leagues that I do with my friends who are more into the subgenre than I am. But since I got early access to this particular album, I figured I’d give it a proper listen and do the proper review and all that. I have no idea how I’ll end up rating any of these songs, or the album as a whole, but here we go.
The Artificial Intelligence Experiment
The layering on the vocals is Really nice
And actually the entire song feels so Thick, in a good way
Love the pause and “thump thump” after “The Artificial Intelligence Experiment”
Oh, I probably can’t just google the lyrics to this now can I, sad
The whole thing feels … epic
I usually associate that kind of guttural growl singing with death metal, we haven’t had much of that yet
Oh and of course as soon as I type that, we get a bit of it lol
I quite like this section around 3:00, I assume this is the outro
I wonder whose vocals these are. Is this THE nLazy singing??
8/10, pleasantly surprised
I Forgot to Take My Meds
Me too tbh
Alright, here’s the melodic part of melodic death metal
Love love love the autotune on this voice in the intro here
“I forgot to take my medicationnnnn” lmao
I heard ‘forgotten pills’! That was a former name of this song
The voice still feels very heavily processed in the slow part ~1:50, kinda wish it was cleaner in the mix to give us more contrast
A bit better around 2:45. Maybe just personal taste then, because the vocal effects definitely fit Conceptually, but I’d prefer them cleaner to make them sound more human
8/10, really enjoyed this one, I think if I was more a fan of metal then it’d be a 9
Lost in the Void
Nice, love me some piano
It does feel slightly out of place though - very clean, kind of echoey, like a random piano from a music chamber was put in the middle of armageddon or something lmao
I keep turning the music up, and then my ears start to hurt, so I have to turn it back down. Maybe that’s an intentional aspect of the genre, or maybe the mixing is a bit off. Let me see if I can figure out what I’m trying to hear more of
Yeah even here. The vocals are as unprocessed as we’ve gotten so far, but they still feel processed! Idk, I’ll stop harping on that now
The “oooooh”s at the end are neat. I’m getting like, horror vibes out of this
7/10
Betrayers Lament
I almost get … prog rock vibes out of this soundscape, whatever instrument doing these harmonies feels like that electronic organ for some reason
Yeah, the growly vocals are definitely not the conventional style that I usually hear in death metal
Not that it’s a bad thing. The section beginning at 1:36 feels Really good in context
This is cool, the section around 3:30 feels really cool
Love how distorted the piano feels
What I want here is a ridiculously technical electric guitar solo at the here, riffing over everything else going on
8/10
Chaos Unleashed
That it, the mixing thing. The vocals are kind of buried in the mix, it’s really hard to make out what they’re saying. BUT, I suspect that’s very intentional, most death metal sounds similar to me
Or maybe I’m just used to listening to pop music where the vocals ARE the mix lol
I haven’t commented much on the particular song yet, but I’m vibing
A comment on the ending: it feels Kind of cheesy. Nowhere else in the song do we get the more mellow vibe of the final “nothing is as it seems”, so it feels like it comes out of nowhere just to force an ending
That said, if the next song begins with a similar vibe, then it might work pretty well as a bridge between the two songs. Let’s see!
7/10
Echoes of Freedom
Nope lol
That said I do quite like the intro here, it’s bouncy and almost dancy
Yeah, this actually feels almost more poppy than the other songs. Can’t totally tell why
Like, if I was gonna release a single off of this album, I think this is the one I’d choose
That said, this is partly because this song is kind of safe. It definitely doesn’t Explore as much as some of the other songs have
8/10
Maze of Life
Lord of the Rings vibes for some reason
I wonder what that instrument is, the one doing the triplets in the intro
Oh wait, this whole song is in 6/8, I didn’t even realize until just now
I like that a lot, it gives a really nice momentum
Feels almost like a march
Haha random choral section at 2:05, this is actually so neat
The thing is, this is the easiest song to listen to, but I don’t know if it’s my favorite. Like, as much as I love 6/8, it does often feel kinda cheesy to me
Or maybe I’m just jaded and cynical
8/10
Revelations
I want more of whatever the highest guitar line is in the first 30 seconds or so
Hoorayyyyyyyyy we’re 8 songs in and finally we get a proper guitar solo!!!
Kinda short though, gimme more gimme more
This was a really good song. I want more of that guitar. Very few comments here though because I did start to zone out - maybe worth noting
8/10
From the Shadows
I can definitely hear the lyrics very easily in the opening lines of the song, first time in the album I can say that for a full verse
Nice, the change between half time to double time around 2:00 felt really good
The instrumental break around 2:20 is good, I like the cute little sixteenth note runs
Structurally, I’d expect this song to be the climax of the album. Lyrically I think that makes sense, I’m not sure I buy it musically
Perhaps Finale is the climax though, seems likely
Again with randomly ending on a mellow section after an entire loud and upbeat song
Maybe that’s a trend in melodic deathcore though
It definitely did something with it though
8/10
Hourglass
Dude this guitar sample is So pretty omg
Yes, love the vocals
This isn’t death metal, this is just Lovely
Love the percussion
Mkay, now it picks up
Maybe this is the climax of the album then, it feels like it so far, that transition was epic
Alright, and now we’re slow again
Oh we’re in 3/4 now, didn’t even notice
I quite quite like this song, probably my favorite on the album so far
3/4 really is such an anthemic time signature, this feels so epic
I’d love to see the lyrics for this particular song. It’s impossible to pick them out during the loud sections
Whatever’s going on with the vocals around 3:20 is genius, love love love how they sound in conjunction with the instrumentals
Lol what is that ending
9/10
Finale
And we go from that soundscape to this soundscape, fair enough ig
We’re in 12 now, I think
Haha wait this is a 7 minute song!! Better be good
That section around 1:37 was good, felt like a nice break
I want it to go somewhere else, 2:20 and so far we’ve been at exactly the same energy the whole way through. This album has enough pretty sections on it that the finale should tie back into
Nice guitar around 2:50, give me more
That’s one thing the album doesn’t do too well is fun guitar solos. Maybe death metal doesn’t do fun guitar solos
3:30-ish sounds Really cool though
Mkay, now we’re soft, about time
This guitar does feel totally out of nowhere, it’s almost … folky
That’s such a metal trope, going from Chill and then immediately having the drums come in and introducing the Metal back in
4:40 is so cool omg
Yeah, this might be my favorite section on the album
The whole instrumental section here is perfect actually. I think vocals would detract from it, good decision
Yep, definitely 12/8
I’m at 6:30 now and I’ll tell you what, this didn’t feel like a 7 minute song at all
Not totally convinced by the ending
9/10

What are some similarities between you and Vash?
had a twin. snores. doesn't mind handling bugs. probably needs to eat. glasses-haver. had metal gouged deep into our backs and it changed us forever. we both like believing in people a lot, and operate on a "there's always a way through" kinda attitude for whatever we're up against. and, of course, there's always the horrors
What are some differences between you and Vash?
i have an ass, i'm human, i hate being called cute, i'm not a mass-murderer, or a pacifist, and i'm not white.
vash doesn't mind being a people-pleasing doormat if it makes others happy (ew!), he's way more tolerant and accepting of others, and he's a total coward who runs away at top speed when it comes to conflict and communication.
Would you be friends with Vash if he was real?
nope. no way
Do you listen to music whilst writing? If so, what kind of music?
usually it's noisy loud stuff! dunno why, but i end up listening to the same song on loop all day if it's stuck in my head, and it feels weird and bad if i don't scratch that itch
i associate 2023 with trigun and lauren bousfield, since that ended up taking over my entire year; still mean to make some sort of naï-focused AMV for crawling into a fireplace cackling (an impulse i've had since episode 3, weirdly cosmic that the title fits what ends up happening to him in the finale).
ended up listening to palimpsest and salesforce a lot. if i don't wanna listen to these albums, i've put on this live mix of hers many a time (⚠️content warning for blood!⚠️ nothing violent happens to her, it's performance art where bousfield gets herself covered in 8 quarts of blood for the 19 minutes the mix lasts). i might be the only dude out there who strongly associates trigun and lauren bousfield together but im cool with that.
latest song i've had on loop for days while making art is give mama a hug by dev lemons, feel like i could live in this song's outro
#cw: surgery#music.#answered asks.#out of character.#!? went and slept and came back to fix that last line lol i was sleepy

12/5/23: It was 50 years ago today, December 5th, 1973, Wings would release their third album Band on the Run. Okay, let's get serious here: this was Paul McCartney's fifth album, Wings or not, post-Beatles. Even at this point with two #1 hits ('Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey'... still hard to believe... and 'My Love', blarrrf) and several Top 40 hits, UK and US, McCartney was kinda considered the biggest solo Beatle disappointment... okay, to be fair, I have no hard evidence of this, but that's like what everyone says... my theory is that there were still people who were butt-hurt over the split with John. To their point, Red Rose Speedway, released earlier in '73, was absolutely no blueprint as to what Wings would release here. Yes, this is the second of the last three superb albums that I mentioned in the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath review... the third one you'll know, dear reader, by this Friday. What we have here is a very loose concept album... isn't it? I dunno... but it's good nonetheless. Title track... c'mon that's a great tune... kinda has that 'U.A./A.H.' feel at first, but unlike the older song we have here a chorus that is the title (yep, it's all marketing)... it's a solid capital-R Rock song. I'm not sure if I like this song the best or track two better: 'Jet'... wow Jet, I think this is maybe a slight wink to Glam, talkin' bout the Sgt. Major and all... it's excellent, it's really like no Pop song I can think of... this was the first single released from the album in January '74... it would end up peaking at #7 in the states. Second single, the title track... like I said, it's just beautiful, and a mini-suite that is actually not at all annoying! Hard to believe a 5+ minute song could be #1, but it was. I would say the other solid tune is the closing song '1985' which purposefully connects the first track... like I said, the concept album idea is pretty loose here. That said '1985' has this kind of very dark hue over most of it... like it's not heavy metal or anything, but it's just a bit unsettling... like kinda BOC-ish. It's really fucking good. Let's talk a little about the other tracks, most of which are moderate-to-high quality. The nearly 5-minute blues jam 'Let Me Roll It'' sounds probably most like John Lennon... it's pretty awesome, I honestly can't believe I didn't hear KSHE ever play this tune. 'Bluebird' is just slightly like 'Blackbird' but obviously much more produced and complicated... it's fine, but the lyrics are kinda dopey. One of the more interesting deep cuts on this record is 'Mamunia'... like it kind of seems like a nothing song but it's got this really neat chorus that changes the pace of the song abruptly. The other tracks are interesting too, plus the band, such that it was, recorded most of this record in Lagos, Nigeria... I'm not sure I can tell much from the music that it mattered (maybe a little on 'Mamunia'). Unlike anything else Paul has released since Abbey Road, this record is exceptional most of the way through, worth your listen, again and again.

Growing up (and having a close relationship) with an older brother who was very into Metal and Rock Music, especially in the 90's, had a huge influence in the music I loved and listened to then, and even so today (there you go Anon, my brother is the one to blame. Take it up to him). The Pogues, and this album, "Hell's Ditch", in particular, was one of those cases. I remember how, back then, I thought it was so much fun to listen and dance to, even if I didn't understand much of what he sang at times (in my defense, he had a bit of a slurred speech). For example, the chorus of "Sayonara" to little, I dunno, 7/8 year old me, probably, was something on the lines of: "Who's gona brickmonwesky Who's gemmion Kung Fu Who's gonna brickmonwesky put me out please Katmandu" So thank you, Shane MacGowan, for the music and the memories.🖤

Saw you liked death/black metal and I was trying to think of bands I listen to on the heavier side
Sylvaine
Ignea
Seven Spires
Also the singers in these bands do the cleans and the growls (or in sylvaine’s case shrieks) and it’s really cool
What are your favorite bands to listen to?
Heehoo I get to talk about music, fuck yes and thank you!
Yeeah a good friend seriously infected me with that filth. where during my teens I was really into metalcore, deathcore, ny hardcore and the like, black & death is really where it's at today for me. Though while I generally don't enjoy core anymore, I'm still very open to all sorts of different metal, I for example really love Visigoth, Idle Hands, Sonja, Kyuss, and now with their latest album even got around to checking out King Gizzard, which are all from different subgenres
Sylvaine I know, my aforementioned friend really loved the Nova album - I dunno it never really clicked for me,sadly. The other two I'm not familiar with, so I'm definitely gonna give them a listen!
But as for my main shit, I currently really enjoy Deicide, Cryptopsy, Bolt Thrower, and Skinless on the Death side of things. I'm currently not really in a black metal "phase" (cuz it's summer lol), but I can always recommend White Ward (especially Love Exchange Failure), Havukruunu, and since I'm seeing them live later this year I've been checking out ...And Oceans, which are really epic too. Oh and Elderwind's "the colder the night" is, maybe ironically, really nice for warm summer nights actually
I could keep going forever but I think this is probably too much of a wall of text as is lol

Band Stuff
Recently made the switch from a 5 string bass tuned down to drop A back to a 4 string in pretty much standard tuning and it sounds, uh, really fucking good honestly… Punchy as hell and cuts a ton of mud which leaves a lot more room in the mix for shit like synths, noise, scrap metal, and extra percussion that we have historically really struggled to make space for.
And yeah, tuning “up” is kind of a weird move for such a doomy band but I guess I’ve been looking back at a lot of the bands that inspired me when I was a kid and finding that:
Probably 8/10 of them weren’t tuned super low.
If the song was good I never cared or even really noticed that it wasn’t tuned super low. I was just in it for the emotion.
I dunno, food for thought.
The other thing I’ve been switching up lately is my distortion, from my usual blown-out “grindsaw” Proco Rat sound to a Boss ODB-3 which I guess sounds “cleaner” and “bouncier” but with a really nice metallic clank that slices right through the mix.
Reminds me of the bass tone on a lot of 90s So-Cal punk and hardcore albums which has definitely taken some getting used to, but I think the trade off is that the tighter bass makes the drums sound fucking massive.
Anyway, I’m rambling, but I’m pretty excited to write songs with the new setup and see what happens.

11, 27, 55 for the fanfic ask game :)
Hell yeah!
11. Do you write scenes in order, or do you jump around?
A little bit of both! I sometimes try to stay in order so that I don't get ahead of myself or forget what I've written where lest I fuck something up royally - the timeline of my current Hellsing work is still all the way messed up due to this, but I'm just banking on hoping it isn't too glaring till I can fix it. However, if I'm in a writing rut, I'll sometimes jump ahead to a scene later on in the work just to get the juices flowing again. Wanting to write but being unable to sucks, so I reason it's better to get more ideas down onto the page to work on later rather than going "I don't feel like writing the next scene so I'm stuck until I do."
27. What area of writing do you feel strongest in?
Dialogue, 100%. I'm far from a champ at writing it, but coming from a background in theatre it's usually what the entire nucleus of my works are built around. Entire story arcs of mine are often constructed around getting to a particular exchange between characters. A bitch loves her quotables and her back-and-forths - to the point I know it's probably very self-indulgent, but hey, I can do what I want, right? - so more often than not it's what I bank most of my work on. It seems to pay off, as I've received the highest of compliments on characterizations and humanizing existing characters. I cherish compliments like that more than any other.
Oh, yeah, and I like gore. I really like gore. I find lots of writers who write scenes with violence and bloodshed will include warnings for it but then I get to it and it's rather tame. As such, I always endeavor to raise the brutality to the highest degree possible. Nowhere near where I want to be yet, but I'm getting there!
55. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?
Oh fuck me man, have I EVER. I get hooked on certain phrases that I use way too often that I have to swat myself on the wrist over. A big one is saying "X was Y and Z in equal measure," and I constantly re-use phrases like "abject terror" and "reckless/relentless abandon" and "commendable enthusiasm." That, and I also love the word "fuck." Especially for Zemira. It's a versatile word, but I do have to reel it back sometimes in order to come up with more creative expletives. Besides this, I seem to have a real penchant for writing stormy weather to signify brewing tension or bad vibes. I adore a good storm personally and always find them emotionally cathartic, so that's likely where it comes from. Besides this, I dunno how often people catch it, but most of my work is riddled with references to, once again, metal album titles and song titles. Even beyond direct references such as Zemira listening to Bolt Thrower or Defeated Sanity in scenes, I've referenced song titles like From the Pinnacle to the Pit by Ghost, Dead in the Dirt (a band), and probably, like, soooo many Cannibal Corpse and Anaal Nathrakh lyrical quotes.
Thank you so much for the ask!

if what draws you to z&a is not necessarily the bluesy sound but the Genre Fuckery, i have plenty of recommendations that follow the same concept. keep in mind there are harsh vocals in all of these to some extent:
White Ward - Love Exchange Failure (black metal+jazz) - there's sax and there's screaming. very noir sounding at times. black metal is a hard thing to recommend for most but these veer pretty far from the genre's clichés just as z&a do. my personal favorite album is their latest, False Light, but Love Exchange Failure is probably a better starting point.
Loathe - I Let It In And It Took Everything (metalcore+shoegaze) - deftones are all the rage these days apparently so if you ever found yourself sitting through a deftones album and went "man i wish this got really fucking angry at times to contrast with the pretty sections" this is absolutely for you
Wayfarer - American Gothic (black metal+americana) - i said there wouldn't be any blues in here but i lied. this is cowboy black metal. my aoty of 2023 that i've been insane about for the past six months. it makes you feel like you're in a desert town in 1890 and there's like a railroad baron who's also a demon or something.
Final Light - Final Light (post-metal+synthwave) - if you've ever heard of the synthwave/darksynth artist perturbator, this is him with the vocalist from cult of luna (one of my favorite bands of all time). even more vibes-based than the previous recommendation. extremely oppressive sounding. if you've ever gone on a rant about cyberpunk as a genre forgoing the dystopian aspect too often, you'll resonate with this
Thy Catafalque - Naiv (prog metal+????) - man i dunno. thy catafalque is one multi-instrumentalist from hungary who singlehandedly releases like one album a year and throws in a bunch of weird shit ranging from electronic to folk to jazz. i could swear there's ska at some point. this is the least heavy rec here by far (his older albums are a bit heavier if you want that) but also the weirdest but also the catchiest.
there are lots more but i'll stop here, i'm just really normal about bands that are like ten genres at once. also shoutout to the previous poster for the Caligula's Horse rec because In Contact is straight up one of my favorite albums ever
one of my new fave bands is this group called Zeal & Ardor—it's like, bluesy but metal and it's sooooo fucking good
