Legal Bug
Hey there, this is a one-shot I wrote today as it refused to leave me alone!  I’m not too happy with the end of it but my sleep deprived brain wanted me to post it before it got lost on my harddrive!  Hope you enjoy it!
Marinette knew that her classmate's thought that her only interest was in fashion. She also knew that they didn't think she was very smart. What they didn't know was that she was the youngest student in the class, having skipped two years. While it was true that her primary passion lay in fashion, over the years she had developed a passion for the law as well. It had started when she had seen how Adrian was treated by his father and had been nurtured by sheer necessity after becoming Ladybug.
After seeing one too many people becoming Akumatized due to fear while being trapped in Abusive relationships, Marinette knew that she needed to be able to help them. As Marinette, she couldn't do anything. As ladybug, she was able to find out where they lived and was able to guide them to the right lawyers that would happily take on pro-bono cases. When Lila had joined her class she knew that she wasn't looking at a girl who wanted attention, she was looking at an undiagnosed psychopath with a heavy dose of narcissism thrown in. She also knew that Lila was a pathological liar and that despite what Adrian had to say, taking the high road would not help them in the long run. Marinette knew that with so many enablers in her class she would have to work hard to get out as soon as she could. With this in mind, she threw herself into her studies. She was still Ladybug and she still did her duties as class president to the best of her abilities but she stopped doing all the extra things she had done for the class. Seeing how Adrian had refused to stand up for himself against Lila had made her realise that he would never stand up to his father either and had killed her crush on him faster than anything else could have. When Lila had pushed for her to be ousted as class president, Marinette had simply cancelled any plans she had made for the class, withdrew the money she had set aside out of her own pocket for any outings and dumped all the paperwork on Alya as Lila had said she couldn't run as president. She had then approached the student council and joined that instead as she knew that, while it was unlikely any prospective employer would care about it being on her resume, she wanted the experience. Her duties on the council were slightly less time consuming than the class president duties and she had used that time to push ahead in her studies. By the end of the year, she was a grade and a half ahead of the rest of her class. To hide how far ahead she was, she had asked Mr Damocles not to change her class but to rather let her teachers know that she was much further ahead than the rest of her class and to assign her work appropriately. He had readily agreed however it seemed Ms Bustier didn't read the memo. As a result, she handed all her work into Ms Mendeleiev instead. Ms Bustier got handed copies of her older assignments and any marks received from her were ignored by the school board. Ironically it was having to do this that brought Ms Bustier up in front of the school board for incompetence shortly after Marinette had graduated when Ms Bustier had tried to report Marinette for truancy. It was then that Lila's lies started to unravel but the grip she had on Marinette's old class was so tight that they didn't even notice when things were going wrong anymore. Less then a month after she had officially graduated from high school she had figured out who Hawkmoth was. She knew after the first time Chat had reacted negatively to the idea that Gabriel Agreste could be Hawkmoth, that he wouldn't be able to help her in the upcoming fight against him. So she went to master Fu with an idea. Make her parents temporary holders of the fox and turtle. Her father's build would provide the intimidation factor that they needed to scare Hawkmoth, while her mother could create decoys to distract Mayura. The key part of the plan would be to wait for Hawkmoth to Akumatize someone, then while chat distracts the Akuma, Ladybug, Tartaruga and Hú bù wǔ (Foxtrot) would head to the Agreste mansion to deal with Hawkmoth and Mayura. The took Master Fu as Serpens with them to collect and important documents that pertained to the miraculous as they didn't want to leave those in Gabriel's possession any longer than they had to. It didn't take long to convince her parents to be temporary holders, though neither Fu nor Marinette revealed that it was Marinette asking them for the favour and not Ladybug. They didn't have to wait too long to act on their plan either. Thankfully the Akuma that was sent out was a rather benign one that simply made anyone it hit speak what they were really thinking and while Chat had to work hard not to get hit, it wasn't causing any true damage. Hawkmoth went down relatively fast, to Ladybug's relief but Chat was still hissing angrily when she arrived a full hour later to the Akuma. One lucky charm later and the Akuma was defeated, however, Chat decided to let her know exactly how angry he was at being left to deal with it alone for so long. Marinette, as Ladybug, looked at Chat the whole time he was berating her, not giving her a chance to talk. Eventually, he seemed to run out of steam when Alya showed up for an interview and started to ask questions of her own. Ladybug had put a hand on her hip in annoyance by this stage and when she answered her voice was sharp. “Well, Chat if you had let me speak earlier you wouldn't be left looking like a fool now! To answer your question, the reason I was late is I had a lead on who Hawkmoth and Mayura were and I was acting on it.” Alya was the one to pick up on her word choice. “Were?” She asked. “Yes. Were. While Chat was keeping the Akuma occupied Tartaruga, Hú bù wǔ, Serpens and I were dealing with Hawkmoth and Mayura. They have been defeated and will no longer be attacking Paris. This is the last Akuma Paris will ever see.” Alya and Chat's jaws dropped. “But-” Chat didn't get the chance to continue as Serpens slipped behind him and removed his ring. Soon Adrian was standing where Chat had been just moments before. Alya instantly rounded on him asking questions by the dozen and Ladybug and Serpens slipped away unnoticed. They both dropped their transformation then she looked at Master Fu for a moment. “Master” he held up a hand then removed the snake miraculous and placed it in the box. “I am old Marinette,” he said sadly. “It's time I passed on the duties of Guardian as I will no longer be able to fulfil them. You may be young but you are wise and more importantly, you are ready. I hereby name you as Guardian of the miraculous.” As soon as he finished speaking a soft glow covered both of them. Master Fu smiled at her. “I have ten minutes before the memory erasure takes hold. Please stay safe Marinette, you have been a blessing to teach and I love you like a grandchild.” With that Marinette was left alone in the ally with the bag that held what felt like the weight of the world. When the news reached her a week later that he had died she insisted on being the one to arrange his funeral, getting help from Wayzz on what he'd have wanted. It was as Marinette was trying to decide what she wanted to study that she came across her first big stumbling block. What did she want to study more? Fashion or Law? She debated with herself for almost a week before Tikki, in a fit of frustration, had asked her why she didn't just study both. To Marinette, it was as though her path was suddenly clear. So she submitted her application to ESMOD with the plan to finish her fashion major there before heading to Harvard in the USA. To make sure she could get into Harvard when she finished at ESMOD, Marinette sent her application in at the same time as she sent her applications in at the same time, though she sent a letter with the one that went off to Harvard and was surprised to see she had been accepted into both. The committee at Harvard had been so impressed that she had planned so far ahead that they were holding a spot for her and she wouldn't have to re-apply when she had finished her other degree. Her time at ESMOD flew by with several of her teachers trying to get her to agree to go to work in a fashion house as soon as she graduated but Marinette stuck to her plan. She was using the money from her commissions to pay her way through her courses and for her transfer to America so she had taken to working at a coffee shop whenever she could, in order to have a little extra, just in case! She had also taken up dancing in her spare time, though she knew that that would always only be a hobby. Her time in Harvard got off to a rocky start. So rocky in fact that she reminded a number of the staff of Elle Woods. Marinette didn't let the rest of the student body know that they were getting to her however the staff saw it and decided to intervene. They contacted Elle and got her to come in for a guest lecture. They told her about Marinette and when Elle saw how similar they were she knew she had to help. It was then that a case dropped in her lap that she knew she would need help with. So she went to the Harvard board with an idea, let her take 4 students on to help her with the research and they would get to see how it really was in court as well as gain some real-world experience. The board loved her idea and soon the other lecturers had managed to get all of their first years students to apply. Marinette hadn't placed much hope in getting a position but had read up on the case anyway and she had several questions about what she had read. Soon the shortlist was posted on the announcements board and the news quickly spread around the campus. Marinette had been in a dance class so when she hears that she had been one of the ones chosen, she quickly went to double-check. She didn't want to show up only to find out it wasn't true after all. She was thrilled to see that she had been chosen and
ran to her dorm to make sure all of her notes where in order. The Kwami's all danced around her in celebration and helped get everything ready. Duusu went through Marinette's wardrobe to make sure she had the perfect outfit ready for her which had Marinette smiling happily. When she arrived at the meeting room she was nervous, but she relaxed slightly when given the brief. They were defending a man accused of killing his boyfriend when he had left him for someone else. Marinette had frowned when she heard that, something Elle noticed straight away. “What's wrong, Marinette?” Elle asked. “I'm not sure,” she answered, which made the other three laugh at her. “Probably doesn't understand the case as it doesn't involve fashion.” One said derisively. “It's not the case I don't understand. There's just something that doesn't fit with the police reports.” Marinette's voice was thoughtful and she had yet to look up from the file in front of her to judge any of their reactions. Her classmates were scoffing at Marinette's logic but Elle had a small smile on her face. Marinette had good instincts and Elle couldn't wait to see how Marinette would prove that their client was innocent. “Right Marinette seems to have a lead she would want to follow, what about you three? What's your take on this? If this was your case what would you want to know?” Elle asked. They didn't answer, how could they answer when they hadn't even looked at the case, they thought that they would just be watching the process not that they would be participating. “Ms Woods?” Marinette's timid voice startled them. “Yes, Ms Dupain-Cheng?” “Just Marinette, please. Anyway if our client was going to kill his boyfriend why was there no history of violence? Something doesn't add up here. From cases I saw in France if one partner was going to kill the other, there was generally several warning signs. I mean sure they could have come home one day and snapped but from our client's statement, it was an amicable break up with no hard feelings. Sure our client still loved the deceased but there is nothing that would indicate he could go into a murderous rage. In fact, if I look at his company log here our client was still at work when the crime happened. This company is infamous for having cameras everywhere because they have several high profile people that work with them, was any video footage pulled at any stage?” “Good! That is the type of thinking one would need when taking this case. Did you notice anything else?” Marinette frowned, there was something else but she just couldn't place it. It was only as she was sitting in court behind Elle that the thing that had been bugging her for weeks hit her. She waited for a recess before she said anything. “Ms Woods?” She started hesitantly. “Yes, Marinette?” “The shirt that was found that had the blood splatter on it was polyester, right? The type the new boyfriend wears.” “Yes, the prosecution said it was left behind by our client. Why?” “Well, I've noticed that our client only ever wears silk, linin or cotton designer shirts. Never polyester, so why would he have been wearing a polyester shirt that day? Is it possible that our client is allergic to polyester?” Elle looked at Marinette and smiled. “Why didn't I see that? They're not even the same size! Our client is at least 10 pounds heavier than the new boyfriend!” Marinette nodded then added, “Even if he had been wearing the shirt, it would sit differently on him causing the blood splatter pattern to be different. I know he doesn't have an alibi that can be proven and that this is a long shot but can we please check?” Elle agreed quickly and soon it was proven to have been impossible for their client to have done it. Something more caught Marinette's attention when the man, the new boyfriend, muttered something in French while still on the stand. The judge noticed Marinette's head shoot up with wide eye's and saw Marinette frantically write something down on her notepad and hand it to Elle. “Councillor Woods, your student seems to have something to add would you let her do so?” The Judge asked. Elle nodded and brought Marinette forward. The judge looked at Marinette and motioned for Marinette to speak. Marinette took a deep breath, “I'm sure you didn't mean for the mike to pick up what you just muttered in French but would you please repeat it so that the court can hear it?” The man narrowed his eyes but repeated his sentence quite calmly, he was relaxed as he thought that no-one in the room could French. His confidence took a hit however when Marinette smiled. “If it may please the court, what he just said translates to: 'This worked before, why did it fail this time?' I know you might not believe me but as everything is being recorded I beg of you to confirm my translation with other people who speak french.” The judge looked at her thoughtfully, then spoke: “How do you understand French?” Marinette was confused, “I thought my accent would have given that away, your honour. I am French. I grew up in France speaking French.” At her innocent statement, the witness exploded. “Why the hell he even come home that day the ex was meant to fetching some stupid MDC brand clothes that would never have suited me but that my boyfriend insisted we give back. He wasn't even meant to be home!” The court fell silent, then everyone started speaking all at once. The case got thrown out in much the same way Elle's first case had been and the other three students were stunned. “How did you know?” They demanded, rounding on Marinette as soon as they entered the room that they had all been using. Even Elle was a little curious she had to admit.” “What do you mean? If you talking about the allergy to polyester it was in one of the courses I took for my fashion degree that designers have to be careful to take textile allergies into account when designing.” Elle looked at her. “I knew you studied fashion, but so did I before I attended Harvard and that wasn't in any of my classes.” “I studied to be a fashion designer at ESMOD before I came here. I aim to be able to represent people in abusive relationships to help them get out of those situations. If I want to do that pro-bono I needed to have something else that I could do in order to support myself financially.” Her voice was innocent and honest but they could see the passion in her eyes as she spoke. “Why that area?” Marinette smiled again but this time it was a sad smile. “I grew up in Paris while a man called Hawkmoth was terrorising everyone to the point that people were locking away their feeling simply to stay safe. I saw several people get targetted simply because they were afraid of their partner for one reason or another. Sometimes they were able to get help to get out, but sometimes they weren't. Some of those that weren't couldn't get out because of not being able to afford a lawyer and I want to be able to help those that fall into that category.” For the first time since they met her, her classmates were quiet. They had thought she was there to get the attention of a rich guy who would support her. Elle smiled at Marinette's reason for studying law too then a thought hit her. “Wait, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, MDC, you're MDC aren't you?” Marinette laughed and nodded before answering. “Yes, I am but I wanted to be treated like an equal so I didn't advertise that fact.” Again her three classmates were stunned. This clumsy girl was a world-famous designer? How had they missed that? Elle seemed to get a little more flustered with each moment that passed. “But that means... And you know...” “Ms Woods, are you alright?” Marinette said quietly. “I'm still the same person you thought I was a moment ago. I'm still clumsy and prone to having anxiety attacks if I'm not careful. I'm human just like everyone else.” Technically she wasn't 100% human anymore due to being a miraculous wielder but no-one needed to know that. Eventually, Elle calmed down and thanked them for their help during the case. Their professors would be getting a copy of her reports on how they did as soon as she was finished them. She also promised that she would leave what she know knew about Marinette out of her report. She also wouldn't let that knowledge influence her report in any way. Eventually, Marinette graduated from Harvard, however before going back to France to set up her practice she decided to visit her long term pen-pal in Achu. Ali had been delighted when she arrived and soon Marinette had changed her mind about where she would set up her practice, deciding to stay in Achu full time. Her practice soon flourished as did her design business. However, the thing that flourished most of all was her relationship with Ali. What had started as a friendship and continued when they had agreed to email each other had grown into love without either of them noticing it. They kept their growing relationship out of the news and when they had decided to get married they made sure that news was kept silent too. It was on a rather warm Friday morning that Marinette got an email that she wasn't sure she wanted to answer. She had been invited to her 15-year school reunion. She spoke to Ali and they decided she would schedule a photo shoot in France that week and he would deal with several appointments there too and they would attend. She knew that she would be able to leave at any time so she wasn't too worried about that, however, she was 4 months pregnant, and she wanted to be careful. The photoshoots went well and it was finally the day of the reunion. Marinette decided to wear one of her designs, a simple navy-blue jumpsuit with a mandarin collar, embroidered with a geometric design in shades of blue that made the suit shimmer beautifully as she walked. She paired it with kitten heels, glad that her pregnancy wasn't showing
or affecting her balance in any way yet. Tikki had said that that was normal for all miraculous holders but Marinette still tended to err on the side of caution. When she arrived she saw that it wasn't just her old class that was there, which she was happy about. She had instantly gone to talk to Marc as she didn't want to deal with Alya or any of the others. This strategy had worked until Lila spotted her and decided to make a big scene about her being there. “I was invited Lila, I can pull up the email if you want me to and I can show you a printed copy if you still doubt me.” Marinette's voice was calm as she spoke. “Why would we want you here?” Alya spat. “She's allowed to go where ever she likes Alya, she's an adult.” Marinette turned to the sound of the male voice that had spoken. “Adrian,” she said calmly, giving him a nod of greeting. He was about to say more but Marinette's phone suddenly went off. She frowned then answered it appearing confused. She kept her conversation brief however in the time she was of the phone Lila had spun yet more lies about her. “It looks like somethings never change,” she said with a sigh. “What would a whore like you know?” Alya demanded. “Firstly, my wife isn't a whore. Secondly, as a major name in the fashion industry you'd think you would know better as any time she is seen out and about her name ends up plastered all over the papers.” Marinette leaned back into Ali's arms as he spoke, having felt him come to stand behind her earlier. “Ali,” she heard Rose gasp “But, Lila said...” “I do not know any Lila.” Ali interrupted sternly. “I don't know what she told you but I'd never even heard of her before you emailed me full of stories about her. Stories that a simple google search would and did disprove. It is due to those that I cut contact with you and blocked any further attempts you made to contact me.” Having said his bit, he looked down at Marinette who nodded. They ignored the shouting match that erupted behind them, opting to simply go back to their hotel room. Life would carry on either way and they knew they had a life with their growing family to look forward to.

doing this early this year because I’m procrastinating.
2020 was good to me. I know that sounds really shitty to say, but it really was. I completed two drafts of new plays, acquired some steady teaching work, had my first professional production, started a fund that helped some artists in my hometown, got an HST number from just doing pure theatre work and felt really artistically fulfilled. Strangely enough, a lot of my good fortune started happening once the pandemic started, which is currently baffling to me.
1 - In January, I entered a mediation with a bunch of old classmates and another individual. I can’t legally say what happened in the mediation, but I can say that it had a really profound effect on me. I think I entered the mediation ready to destroy this person and ruin them. But I think somewhere in that, I realized that that wasn’t helpful. It’s always weird thinking back to that time in my life (when I started this tumblr actually!) about how sad I was and how lost I felt and how this person and a few other people really made me feel dreadful. Aside from maybe 2 people in my class, I don’t really connect to anyone from that cohort. But hearing and experiencing closure and learning how to forgive someone face to face, who made me feel like I was worthless felt really impactful. I think I want to enter this decade as a more patient person, especially as I start to engage more with teaching work. That period from 10 years ago taught me about the theatremaker I don’t want to be. So, it’s my responsibility to make space to be the opposite of that - to forgive people when they screw up as opposed to hold it against them and be weird.
2 - I adjudicated the U of T drama festival this year! It took me back to Sears days where I’d do a thing and then wait for feedback from a pro. I found the entire experience super inspiring and I took it pretty seriously. Having come from a really terrible theatre school experience right out of high school, as an educator, it’s really important that I don’t play softball with my students, but also don’t destroy them. I really hope my words gave them confidence as well as things to build upon. I kind of want to be the educator I didn’t have when I originally came to Toronto 10 years ago and only encountered quite recently. There’s also a kind of refreshing lack of cynicism when it comes to student-led/non pro work (more on this later) that I think I’ve been missing in my practise.
3 - I let a group of friends down on a project where I put people in harm’s way.  I didn’t stand up for them when bad things happened. As someone who prides himself on making rooms safe, being on the outside of that situation was disturbing and unacceptable. The experience also taught me something I’ve been learning through my whole “career”. It doesn’t matter how prestiguous the institution is. If you don’t feel safe, if you don’t feel comfortable, if you feel isolated and alone, get out. Career advancement shouldn’t destroy you. Aside from the project itself, the environment of being in a mostly white, aggressively conservative town is something I never want to do again  -no matter the money or how it’ll move you forward. It’s something I want to put into my personal contract to myself. Unflinchingly.
4 - Similarly, I think I need to incorporate this mentality into the projects/people I work with. I’m down to be challenged, but if someone makes me feel terrible about myself/I get a vibe that they don’t really believe in my work, I need to not engage with them. Sometimes I get starstruck, or I try to please or impress people because I fear of what they’ll think of me in the larger community. I think if I have that fear, maybe that relationship isn’t one I want to explore. I want to work with collaborators who get excited about the same shit I’m excited by, who push me to be better, but who want to run with me as opposed to at their pace.
5 - From March to July 2020, I was trapped in Hamilton, Ontario for over 100 days (thank you, Spring Awakening + COVID).  For all of my yammering about how much I loved my hometown in my last post, I was fucking miserable. I have very few friends who currently live in the city, living with two very risk adverse people (as they should be) and feeling like I was trapped in a city that I have complex feelings about was really terrible. I hadn’t been trapped in Hamilton against my will since I got kicked out of Ryerson. From March to May, I was probably the saddest I’d been in a while. I started going to bed at stupid times because I didn’t want to be awake for most of the day. I played a lot of video games, cooked a lot, but creatively I kind of hit a snag. I don’t want to live in Hamilton. I want to create stuff there, but I know I don’t belong in the city. The place has such a weird energy and reminds me of my past failures. It sucks the energy out of me and brings me back to a time where I felt like I had no control over my career and was destined to become a hobbyist in the arts.
6 - During this time, I was sort of kind of busy. I finally made a website, I made a fancy video for a general audition (which actually landed me employment/a relationship with the company!). But most importantly, I think I finally got what Nina was saying. I do have no direction in my career because I’m not applying for things. I’m not reaching out to companies and answering their calls. I haven’t really freelanced. Spring Awakening at HTI, while great for what it was (before we got shut down), was actually an incredibly safe choice. if I really want to do this seriously, why am I not trying to get into pro rooms? Going from festivals to spring was a weird move, but maybe it needed to happen because it made me realize that this isn’t me taking control of my career, this is me taking a step backwards into something I know I can do. When everything re-opens, I do have some gigs lined up, but I want to be aggressive in reaching out to ADs and companies as a director. I never want to be in a situation where I’m trapped in Hamilton with piles of unproduced plays again. I want to get out there and hunt for producing opportunities. Being trapped made me realize that I’d kind of always been trapped and just floating by.
7 - June was kind of a saving grace. Somewhere in the mire of the pandemic, York University came a calling and wanted to commission a new play for their 2020/2021 season. I initially found this really daunting - the plays I’d been working on in the past few years had taken years to write and had led nowhere. My writing lately had been pretty sloppy and well....bad. I said yes, though, because I figured it’d keep me busy. This project kind of made my whole year. Having a dramaturg who wanted to jive with me and build on my ideas was something I hadn’t been engaged with in a long time. Having a team be really excited about the work I was putting out was also kind of thrilling and a novel experience (the last solo written play I’d put up was over 4 years ago). Getting paid a real wage as a playwright for production was something I’d never experienced before. I’m dangerously proud of HAGS, as it made me realize that I can actually write plays and get them put up. That yes, it’s important to take your time, but I can actually be produced and produced on someone else’s terms and timeline. 
8 - June also led to the birth of the Garden Project, an initiative created to not only challenge the benign racism of Hamilton’s regional theatre, but also to actually get people in the city paid. Alongside a team of 6 producers, we raised $18000 dollars in a VERY short amount of time. We also gave that money out almost immediately, which was great. If Aquarius won’t do something, we will. We were also called racists for doing the project, which was hilarious. Never change, Hamilton.
9 - Myself, Senjuti and Claire took on Aquarius over what seemed like an endless summer of back and forth emails. I don’t know if anything will change, but we were able to hold a theatre publicly accountable and pressure them into not hiring another man who gaslights his accusers. I will also admit that my participation in this crusade is highly influenced by the fact that this will not effect my career in the slightest. I don’t work professionally in the city. They can’t hurt me.
10 - Arriving back in Toronto as I finished the Ministry of Mundane Mysteries was probably one of the most touching things that happened to me this year. Standing on the balcony during the summer and hearing Hadestown blast over a phone speaker to me was like coming home in a real way. I belong in this city. This is where I want to make work.
11 - Alongside a production draft of HAGS, I finished a full draft of PING! Loads of issues and work to do, but it feels like a step in a more personal direction. Most importantly, I actually did the thing. After giving up on a project I’ve been working on for 4 years, PING feels like a new direction for me, one grounded in my own experiences, interests and fears.
12 - I started running! This deserves it’s own post because it’s to hold myself accountable. I still hate sweating, but doing physical exercise is something I want to keep going post pandemic. 
13 - I’m, um, directing Shakespeare maybe next year. We’ll see how that goes. 
14 - I guess my final thoughts for 2021 are to keep pushing myself to apply for things I don’t think I’m ready for (NOT ADing), to stop waiting for things to happen to me and to take the same charge of my career post pandemic that I did pre-pandemic. Aside from the nightmare of the pandemic, 2020 was a rejuvenating year that made me realize that I’m still capable of doing this on all fronts. Whether that be new play creation, working as an educator with One Song Glory, York University, Hart House and UTM, directing stuff or just learning how to be accountable for things and supporting young, exciting artists, I want to be the theatremaker I looked up to 10 years ago. One I didn’t have at Ryerson.  And I feel I’m doing that.
VIDEO GAMES (I PLAYED A LOT. In order.)
1 - Last of Us Part 2 - I will defend this game to the end of time. This game made me a better person and really taught me about empathy, forgiveness, but most importantly that you can don’t have to like someone to forgive them. I feel a lot of gamers missed the point with this one, or didn’t want to engage with Abby for their own reasons, which is fine. But a character doesn’t have to be likeable to be well written. The game is structured so you don’t consider her perspective until you hate her guts, which is kind of how life works. In this essay I will.... 
2 - Hades - Hades is the most fun I’ve made in a game in a really, really, really long time. Addictive gameplay, an ever evolving story and incredible re-playability makes it something I keep going back to for 4 hour bursts (the time really flies by!). Hades is a game where I thought about it when I wasn’t playing it. Radical.
3 - Night in the Woods - Is one of the best written games I’ve ever played. Super nuanced, really well written, I had to stop playing to be like, damn, this is good. The music also slaps.
4 - Crash Bandicoot 4 - is old school platforming done right. Really hard levels. twitch controls. Gorgeous design. Loads of collectables.
5 - Wide Ocean Big Jacket - is a 2 hour adventure game that’s cute, sweet, really well written, and a great game to play with buds.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Moonlighter, The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 (IS FINE. Everyone is mad.), Control, Yakuza 0 (just started. Really dig it!), Detroit: Become Human

The Life of a Athletic Trainer

Section 1:
After reading the “7 Powerful Questions To Find Out What You Want To Do With Your Life”, by Scott Christ. It made me think and realized I accomplished a lot more than I thought. To start the article Scott asked “What I’m passionate about?”.  I am passionate about many things. I will always love sports, baseball to be exact, I played my whole life since I was about three years old. During the last season of my high school career I tore my rotator cuff. I got a couple offers and I was actually going to come to Kutztown to continue my academic and athletic career. My rotator cuff didn’t seem to heal right and it never felt the same. It was devastating to tell Coach Blum what happened, who was the coach at the time. I still decided to come here which was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. Since baseball took up so much of my time, I decided to start some new hobbies, music producing and fitness which is what I want a career in. I found love in making music and making something that is actually mine. A lot of my friends rapped and showed me some of the ropes and I picked it up pretty fast. I actually don’t have a very wide range of music surprisingly, but my heart is there for rap and weirdly Frank Sinatra. Lastly and most importantly I’m passionate about school even though it’s tough.
“What are my greatest accomplishments so far?”. I would have to say my greatest accomplishment so far is going to school, continuing it, and making my parents proud. I didn’t have a great past, coming from Philadelphia you see a lot of stuff. It’s not weird to have random run ins with the cops, hear and see stuff you weren’t supposed to or wish you never did. I had to get out of there even if it was for a little bit. Something else would have to be what I achieved during my years when I played baseball, from championships to getting recruited by Kutztown.
“If my life had no limits what would I choose to have and what would I choose to do?”. If my life had no limits, I would choose to have money, who wouldn’t? But what I would choose to do is a different story, I would want to travel the world, be able to teach people, and put smiles on peoples faces. Lastly, help people become fit and better themselves.
“What are my goals in life?”. My goal in life is to make sure certain people are proud of me such as my parents, friends, and family. Not really saying I want a name for myself but I want to be able to teach people I come across something they never knew before. My goal is to also strive in my career, to be one of the best at what I do and I can stay healthy and help others. My biggest fear is letting my parents down, no one wants to let your parents down. You always want them to see you at your best but sometimes we hit a couple bumps in the road.  
“Whom do I admire most in the world?”. Who I admire most would have to be my grandfather. He taught me to never see anyone as different. He also showed me that money doesn’t matter, life brings you happiness, and the people around you. He also is a big reason for me choosing to be in the sports field, he was a Villanova football coach throughout the 70s and 80s.
“What do I not like to do”? What I don't like. That is kind of a hard question, it takes a lot for me to not like something. Since I’m a person who likes to speak they’re mind and don’t really care about other opinions, unless it helps me out. If I had to pick what I don’t like is people accusing me for a thing I didn’t do.
Lastly, “How hard am I willing to work to get what I want?”. I am willing to work as hard as possible, the whole time I’ll be thinking of my family and how happy they would be. But to make it happen I have to work on being dedicated. That is one of my worst flaws, staying focused.

Athletic Trainer Job Summary
Without athletic trainers where would the sports world be? According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook “Athletic Trainers” work with people of all ages, they practice in diagnosing, preventing, and treating bone and muscle injuries. Athletic trainers are usually the first ones on the scene when an injury occurs on the field. They provide first aid, and emergency care on the scene. They also provide programs for athletes to prevent illness and further injury. One of the athletic trainers' responsibilities may be having regular meetings with the athletic director and others to talk about things such as budgets and business related issues.  The work environment can be very different depending where you end up. The most common is in an educational setting such as colleges, high school, and elementary, others would be hospitals, gyms, and professional sport teams. Athletic Trainers also may work with the military, or provide help for curtain people serving our country. To become an athletic trainer you will need a bachelor's degree, also a license if you continue this practice. The average wage would be roughly $47,000, where the minimum is around $31,000, and the max $70,000. Employment rate over the last couple of years has definitely risen and is predicted to go up 19% over the next ten years. Lastly, athletic trainers are all over the place, as mentioned schools, universities, professional level, and the military. So finding a job in your state or area shouldn’t be too hard.

Section 3
Interview Questions
The person I interviewed was Jack Entriken, he's one of the main athletic trainers in Kutztown and has been doing this for about thirty years. For my first question I asked “What do you love about being an athletic trainer?”. He told me “We see the injury before anyone else, we also get to see the process of going from injured to healthy which is always a great thing to experience.” Second I ask “What is your greatest strength and weakness?”. He said his greatest strength was being able to interact with all different kinds of people from everywhere. He then went on to tell me his greatest weakness he said he was expecting too much. He didn’t really go into detail about that but it’s understandable. Third I asked Mr. Entriken “What is the best and worst decision you’ve made in your career?” He went on to tell me his best decision was going from a Physical Education Teacher (Gym Teacher) to a Athletic Trainer. His worst decision was not getting his PHD, so he wasn’t able to open new doors for success. I then went on to ask “What would you be doing if you were in my shoes now?”. Jack couldn’t express it enough. He told me to take a lot of science classes, taking many classes you don’t think you really need. He also told me the problem here in Kutztown is they don’t have the right classes to continue your practice after school. He also made sure I knew internships are very important. Fifth I asked “What does your typical work day like?”. He told me his mornings are treatment to athletes and paperwork. In the afternoon he watches over practices, practice prep, and working games. Lastly postgame, post treatment or new treatment from athletes. The last question I asked was “If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?”. He said Yes he would, it helped him be successful, he is able to put food on the table and take care of kids and wife. He wanted to stay in Kutztown so he can be close and see his family grow. He never wanted to go pro, even though he got offers that were better than what he had. He wanted to stay close with his family. Which is his number one priority.

In this article ‘Concussion in Sports: Is it worth the risk?’ by Erika Rosas-Lopez, she talks about concussions and if they're really worth it or not. One of the most common injuries athletic trainers see are concussions. She begins by talking about how if you are an athlete of any kind you are at risk of injury, and how athletes put their bodies through hell to perform better when that shouldn't be. She then starts to explain what a concussion is and how they treat the injury. Since the 1920s concussions have been most common for boxers, but just recently has concussions been seen throughout the media. Most common concussions today after wrestling surprisingly. Lastly, she begins to get into CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) and how it can affect you in the long run. It can only be diagnosed after death which is difficult to make it treatable. It is most relatable to Alzheimer's and dementia, and that is pretty serious. I chose this article because in my opinion the most interesting thing involving the human body is the brain. It makes everyone different, it’s scary because you know how people really feel. This article relates to my career path because concussions will be the most common injury I will see, and it happens often. I learned that every concussion and the treatment is all the same, no matter what level it is. I would like to learn more about CTE but it’s hard because you must go inside the brain to know. It’s too risky of a surgery to perform on a person that is alive.

I know you have questions! Oh, ok, I’ll honor the era of the fact check (be the change you want to see int he world, after all!): I think you have questions and I know I want to use questions as a framework for telling you more about my life. On board?? In case your answer is “no” and you choose not to click “keep reading” below, here’s the obligatory picture right up front:

That’s me in San Jose a couple days ago. Yes, I have a “bum bag” (super apologies to everyone I ever mocked for a fanny pack, a sweatpant, or a mini van, and a reminder to us all that it’s ridiculous to judge people for the things they decide enhance their quality of life...are heavily starched jeans in my future?  who can say?).  Also, yes I am on the North American continent. Sadly not with enough time or planning to be able to connect with many people, plus it’s a work trip and I’m freezing by balls off.  More on that later (the work part, not my balls). Let’s get to the Q&A!
A bit of a heads up: a lot of these are combo questions, I grouped them by flavor to make things more compact... you bunch are good at asking the same question multiple ways.
1.  Do you miss home/Seattle/the States?  What do you miss the most?
Alright, I’m going to leave out the obvious friends, family and a certain tiny dog, because...duh.  Do you really need the validation?  You know I miss you.  As for P-dog, he was IN A WEDDING.  IN A BOWTIE.  So suffice it to say that while I still get sad when I get in bed at night and he’s not curling up at my feet, his new family is showing their commitment to him in a whole new and completely adorable way.

I do not actively miss living in Seattle or the States. I haven't been homesick. and to be clear, Seattle is an amazing place and our lives there were full of amazing people and things. It’s just that I am enjoying being somewhere else and doing new things (and many of the old things in a new location). I can love Seattle (and you!) and love somewhere else at the same time, how amazing is that? One good thing about being faced with losing my job and visa was that I had to ask and answer the question of whether it was best to just “go home” -- and it was clear for both me and Jason that we did not want to leave Christchurch yet. No, we did NOT ask the kids this time :-). 
I DO miss some things about living in Seattle, and if you know me you won't be surprised to hear they are largely food related...La Palma.  Pickles.  Gardenburgers. Caesar salads that don’t have a poached egg on top. The ability to fulfill a special order (say, make a Caesar salad without an egg on top).  Jale-frickin’-penos!  It’s not to say that NZ doesn't have good food; overall the quality of the food is high and it’s nice that all the coffee shops serve real food.  Also, you almost never have table service, which threw me off at first, but now I really appreciate being in control of when I order and when I pay my bill.  A non-tip economy has its perks for sure, including less math at the dinner table! But there are some foods for each of us that fulfill a craving, are a go-to, and when you can’t get them, even a close approximation or a really good option just won’t do. This problemhas inspired me to learn how to cook new things, at least. Haven’t nailed the gardenburger yet.

Also, I miss yoga.  A LOT.  Props to Core Power, Shefa, Haute, and Maven for being awesome places to practice a powerful flow in the heat with music. Thanks to all of you who taught me and those that let me teach you.  Christchurch has more bars and restaurants and interesting places than we expected, but this style of yoga just isn't there as far as I can tell.  So hit me up if you're interested in investing in a probably-not-very-profitable business in NZ once I have a visa that lets me own a business, and you can weigh in on whether “Surfing Donkey Yoga” (Jason’s nomination) is on brand or not.  I have an opinion but no harm in workshopping it. 
2.  Wait, you said in an earlier blog you don't overwork (or sometimes even work at all when you should be)...what do you do/are you going crazy/how do you handle it/are you really you?!?!? 
This is an honest question I have gotten in phone conversations, and since I assume you know me and my, um, rather industrious ways, you may have it too.  I mean, it’s not a secret that when I lived in Seattle  I worked A LOT, and stressed over work A LOT, and talked about work A LOT, and did work-y things outside of work, and worked at home and on the weekends FAR TOO MUCH.  And for background: in New Zealand I have had a much better work life balance. And at the end of my time at SLI there were many many hours that I went to work but did not really have work to do.  So while I have done what I needed to do, and contributed to the business, and used my skills, working and being at work has NOT defined my life here, even in the slightest, which it did in Seattle.  That pains me a little, because I also did lots of of things besides work in Seattle, and I never valued being a person who was stressed about work all the time (at least, I did not value that for other people or in principal, though I did build up some kind of addiction or compulsion based on an anxiety about not working).  Can I attribute being ok with more balance to a “less demanding” job?  In part that would be fair, but after giving it some thought I also must attribute it to both breaking the chain of bad habits and the general difference in culture,  For, as far as I can tell, in New Zealand, it is not common to work outside hours or on vacation; people value value and respect family time; and there's a much more subtle and prevalent difference that's hard to explain about the feeling that everything really is going to be ok if you don't struggle to get it all done in record time -- there’s an undercurrent of pressure that does not exist, at least not for me, and I think it’s a Kiwi thing.  An informal poll and some observational data (e.g. one boss told me when I sent an email on a sick day not to do it again, no laptop, employment contract stating a 37 hour work week) backs it up.   
So what do I do and am I still me and not going crazy?  Well, I’ll tell you and yes and no to those questions. Let’s be clear that I still work 37-40 hours a week which is plenty so don't get too exited, but here’s a wee list of some of the things I’ve been doing with “all this time.”  Sadly not enough yoga :-( 
I write a blog!  You're welcome.  
Cook, surf, hike, bike, gym, listen to records...I think you knew that already. Same shit, different continent.

Burlesquercize!  Yes, it’s what it sounds like -- a sluttier version of Jazzercise. My friend Tas and I also did a 6 week burlesque course that culminated in an actual performance.  On stage.  In. Front. Of. Real. People.  Body positive, pro-female and anti-agist?  You betcha.  Terrifying?  Kind of. Entertaining?  I hope so.  And no, we did not take our clothes off (that would have moved the answer to “terrifying?” waaaaay up). 
Tennis lessons!  Finally fulfilling a desire to learn and play tennis that I have had my entire adult life, I joined an adult beginner group lesson at the tiny Opawa Tennis Club.  Really, in American terms, this should be “club” -- because like the lawn bowling club and croquet club near my house, this is the kind of club that where pay $100 bucks to get a key so you have access to equipment and courts when you need them, and there are organized games and lessons a few hours a week.  Plus a water fountain. Croquet might be my next project, as I am still as shockingly bad at tennis as I was in junior high when I got moved from the 8th grade beginner team down to the elementary school group at a “real tennis club.”  But learning tennis is fun, and I have met some great people, and hey, it’s summer in December so why not? 
I grew tomatoes. It didn’t take that much time, so I could still do tennis and burlesque, thank god.  
I make pickles like twice a month. In NZ, pickles are almost exclusively sweet gherkins.  Most of you are probably like “making pickles is super easy, der.” You're right. I don’t know why I ever paid for them...oh except they were pretty cheap and super convenient to buy pretty much anywhere. It’s remarkable how scarcity, a bit of dill and a head of garlic can drive such commitment to a new activity.  Now if I only had a goddamn Gardenburger to eat with my pickle slices!
On a career path note, I became a volunteer city coordinator for Product School meetups and am working to get that off the ground.  I am mulling over ideas about generating and delivering content and education in the product management space...there may be a great opportunity to leverage my skill set and breadth of professional experience in NZ and I’m doing some activities that will help me network and consider the possibilities. 
I have read more books since we moved than I think I read in the last 10 years.  I do miss the New Yorker, I think I could finally be crushing the cover to cover in a week challenge. If you haven't read This is Where I Leave You, you should.  
TV: In the interest of transparency...I don't just read and write and exercise, and as much as I’d like to present as that virtuous, I can’t lie to you, even by omission.  If you have not seen the Amazon TV show Red Oaks, I highly recommend it.  Obviously the tennis montages have a new-found appeal for me, but the rest of it was really good too. 
Roadtrips!  There’s a lot to do around NZ, even within an hour or two of Christchurch.  I’m trying to think of a good way to tell you about the things we have done, there will be more posts to highlight what we’ve done so far. 
We hang out with friends, host guests, and sometimes try to make new friends. More on that in other posts as well. 
Here’s another thing we did, which was attend an interactive improv-y game show at the Busker Festival...yes, I am realizing as I get ready to hit “publish” that it sorta seems like Jason and I are into a whole new realm of adult entertainment. 😱. We’re really not, not that there's anything wrong with it.  I just thought you might appreciate this picture of Jason:

The Lure of Academia, and Why We Can’t Let it Go
I never truly learned what a love/hate relationship was like until I began my journey in academia.
Let me explain.
I would say that this journey truly began when I started working towards earning a master's degree in art history. While I was an undergraduate, I never questioned that I would get a master's degree; indeed, the only question was: where? After applying to a number of schools, I was thrilled to head off to the University of Edinburgh. It was there that I truly fell in love with academia while also discovering many things I disliked about it. Let me add this disclaimer: I had marvelous experiences at Edinburgh. The conclusions I have reached are entirely general and based on personal observations.
The Positive Side of Academia
What is it that keeps tempting me to return to academia? Why am I still browsing PhD programs? I've narrowed down my answer to the following points.
Conversations
I learned that I loved seminars. Having everyone read selected texts and then discuss those texts for hours was absolutely wonderful to me. I met some like-minded individuals with whom I became close academically, but I was also excited to be challenged by those with whom I disagreed. I highlighted and re-read the texts, thought of questions, and finally became the student I'd aspired to be for years: a talkative one. When asked about something of interest to me, I could (and still can) go on for hours and hours. Ask anyone I know! There are few things I love more than a good conversation!
Reading
Speaking of reading, I thrived in the text-heavy environment of the program of which I was a part. Not only did I read what was required, but I found related texts and perused those, as well. Additionally, researching was, to me, like solving mysteries by asking just the right questions and re-formulating the way in which I thought to produce a wide variety of resources on a given subject. I loved browsing the fascinating selection available to me at the library and checking books out. This was something I did almost every week. As a lover of reading, the concept of getting credit for reading was wonderful. Not only that, but having a built-in community of people with whom to discuss the texts was a magical experience for me. When I finished my master's degree, I even started a book club because this was a part of life as an academic that I never wanted to let go.
Community
Having people around who know what you're talking about (most of the time, anyway), or who are at least vaguely interested in similar things, is really what I found to be the greatest enticement to academia. This is something that I still miss every single day.
The Negative Side of Academia
Clearly, in many ways, I had a wonderful time in graduate school. However, there are some negative aspects to academia that apply to many schools, and I can say this with confidence, as I am in graduate school...again (I know, I'm hopeless).
Expense
First of all, it is so, so incredibly expensive. Even if you are lucky enough to secure great scholarships and/or grants, you probably won't have much time to work. If you do manage to find time to work, you'll be spreading yourself so thinly that you will get to the point that you won't even be able to function (ask me how I know). Scraping money together is no fun, and it is even less fun when it seems impossible to do so. Depending on the degree, you may have to make all sorts of time, money, mental, and emotional sacrifices for 1-7 years (yes, 7! No, I'm not referencing medical school - this is in reference to some doctoral programs for art history). This means that you will, inevitably face burnout in pretty much every possible way while trying to figure out how to live with limited funds.
Burnout
Let's talk a little bit more about burnout. I think it's important because it's difficult to know just what it's like, unless you experience it in the academic context.
Imagine you are tired in every possible way while also feeling like you are worthless and will never finish the work that is required of you. This is how I define and explain academic burnout.
The stress of trying to get work done when your heart is just not in it anymore is only exacerbated by the mental acuity that is not present that you had at the beginning of the semester or project.
When I was working on my thesis, I had a pile of books as tall as I was checked out from the library. I had so many PDFs downloaded onto my computer and so many tabs open on my browser that it felt like my head was spinning.
What is the cure? Quitting altogether or simply not caring anymore. In my experience, it is nearly impossible to just "not care."
Snobbery
Academia is, inherently, incredibly snobby. There, I said it. You've all been thinking it, I'm sure!
It's really frustrating to me that this is the case. In my opinion, learning should be for everyone. I am a teacher, after all.
People in academia think they're something special. I can say this because I've been there. I don't think I'm any better than the next person for having extensive knowledge about John Singer Sargent and art of Europe in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. The same should be the case for any academic. To be fair, I've met some truly lovely people in academia. I've met an equal number of snobs, though. I'm sorry (well, no, I'm actually not), but being an academic does not give you the license to be rude to others. I will certainly treat you with respect, but you should return that respect with basic dignity.
Some of the e-mails I received from faculty at universities when considering a PhD a couple of years ago would make you fall out of your chair and then become very angry indeed.
One of my favorite TV shows, Endeavour, regularly tackles this aspect of academia. If you haven't seen the show, it is a mystery series that takes place in the late 1960s - early 1970s in Oxford, England. The protagonist for whom the show is named works in the police after dropping out of school at Oxford, but he stays in Oxford. Despite never finishing a degree in higher education, Endeavour Morse is one of the most intelligent characters that I have encountered in fiction, ever. Due to his position in the police force, however, he is treated as though he is not only unintelligent, but also of lesser status than those either in school or on staff in Oxford. I love his witty comebacks, of which there are many. I also thoroughly appreciate how he continues to educate himself and enjoy intellectual pursuits, all apart from an academic context. If you want to see more clearly what I mean in this point, watch the show. You should just watch the show, anyway. It's just so good!
Results
What do we do all of this work for? I asked myself this pretty regularly towards the end of my degree. Later, as I searched and searched and searched some more for a job, I continuously asked myself this same question. Why?
There's one obvious reason: employment. I really wanted to become a professor. I did become one. That being said, I still don't teach as a professor full-time. Finding a job in academia would be daunting to anyone, I assure you. Sadly, getting a master's degree isn't always helpful when looking for a good job - or any job, for that matter.
Apart from employment, though, why?
Answering the question isn't a simple task - it's such a nuanced issue. It really depends on the person. I think a lot of it has to do with a love of learning that is difficult to satiate. Anyway, that's what I've found. Missing a built-in community is another reason.
At the end of the day (I can never say or write that without thinking of Les Mis...), I have recognized something important. My favorite parts of academia are not restricted to the university setting. Sure, it may be easier to find community, have conversations, and focus on purposeful reading there, but - and I can't stress this enough - it isn't necessary.
Over the past few years, I've really learned a lot about how I can connect with others and continue learning, all on my own. Not only has it been extremely rewarding, but I haven't faced burnout, haven't had to pay exorbitant fees, and I rarely encounter snobbery.
I did go back to graduate school last year for entirely practical reasons. To be entirely honest, I find my other learning endeavors and outlets to be far more fulfilling.
Maybe, one day, I will work towards a PhD. I don't feel the need to now, though.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is that you don't need brick and mortar schools to experience and enjoy the perks of academia. You can have the good without the bad!
I'm not trying to talk you out of pursuing higher education. I am all for it! I just think it's important to pursue it for the right reasons, and it's even more important to be aware of the pros and cons before you commit.

Before deciding if you should get a Master’s or Ph.D. in wildlife biology, first research the type of position you ultimately want! Use the resources in Best Job Websites for Wildlife Biology and Ecology and watch this video:
Once you have an idea of the type of job you want, you can now narrow down the educational requirements you need. If you don’t know exactly, that’s okay, but now at least you have some sort of direction.
One of the biggest questions you will ask yourself in your career is “Should I get a Masters or Ph.D.?”
My Decision and What I Would Change
Before I went to graduate school, I took three years off and secured research internships to see how I would like working in this career and what type of research I wanted to pursue. In all of these internships, I learned invaluable skills and experience.
Taking some GPS coordinates at the northern rim of the Grand Canyon for the BLM.
At the Bureau of Land Management, I did a lot of field work and learned how to use ArcGIS, navigate in backcountry areas, and gained some experience tracking animals with radio telemetry. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, I gained a experience in lab work, measuring the hormones of captive and wild animals for conservation and management purposes. At the School for Field Studies in Kenya, I got my most valuable experience. I coauthored two scientific publications by collaborating with a professor on social science studies.
I learned A LOT from these experiences, but the problem was that I learned what research was like from an intern’s or a technician’s perspective. As an intern or technician, you don’t have ownership over the project. It’s not your baby; it’s not up to you to design the project or problem solve once you hit roadblocks. Even as a coauthor, the question was already formulated and I had no input in designing the study.
Therefore, I didn’t go through the struggles I would have if it was my project. In other words, I could sleep at night as the main responsibilities were not on my shoulders. In these experiences, I didn’t fully understand what it was like to be a lead researcher.
Although I recommend highly that you volunteer or work in a lab before you get your Master’s or Ph.D., I don’t think this experience alone provides you with the necessary information to truly know what it’s like to be a researcher. This is true even if you are in charge of your “own” project as an undergraduate. It’s not the same as when you are doing your Master’s or Ph.D.

There are two ways to go about getting an advanced degree. You can get a Master’s and then get your Ph.D. or you can just jump straight through and get your Ph.D. I did the latter. Note, that not all programs or universities will allow you to do this. For example, at the University of Missouri, where I went to school, in the Biological Sciences department (my department), you didn’t need a Master’s to get a Ph.D., but in the department of Fisheries and Wildlife, you did.
I figured that if I didn’t like science or if I wanted to change to a Master’s, I always could. This is true, but it was harder in my situation. For me, I didn’t start my field work and lab work until year three. If I changed to a Master’s, it still would have taken me about five years to complete my work. At that point, I might as well have finished my Ph.D., which is what I did.
For the reasons outline below, I really wish I did my Master’s first, but if I did, I might not be writing these blog posts for you and my book for careers in wildlife biology.
Master’s or Ph.D. ?
Briefly, the main difference between a Master’s and a Ph.D. is that jobs with a Ph.D. are those where you are in charge or a lab or research project. In these positions, you will be directing the research and deciding what types of projects to pursue. In Master’s level positions, you usually will be working for a more senior scientist who will be directing you on the projects you will be working on.

Over-qualification is is Real
You might be thinking, “I’ll just get my Ph.D. because that will qualify me for everything.” However, in reality it can over-qualify you for jobs. What this means is that if you are applying for a job at the Master’s level and you have a Ph.D., the employer might think that you are just applying for this job to get a job. In other words, using this job as a placeholder until you get the job you really want.
To this day, I apply for some jobs that only require a Master’s because I am genuinely interested in these jobs. You will have to explain in your cover letter why you really want the job to try to convince the employer that this is not the case. In many cases, I think I didn’t get interviewed because I was overqualified.
Master’s First:
Master’s Pros:
You get the experience of doing a project from start to finish. This is extremely helpful in preparing you for your Ph.D. if you decide to do one. You have complete ownership over the project and have to work out all of the problems and setbacks. As an intern on other people’s research projects, although I was getting experience, I did not have this ownership and get this experience.
You may want to stop at a Master’s even if you think you want a Ph.D. now. You might realize you don’t like science or that you want jobs at this level. It’s really hard to understand what science is like until you have your own research project! Trust me.
You will get more publications! If you choose to go on and do your Ph.D., you will have at least one publishable manuscript from your Master’s and more from your Ph.D. Publications make you more competitive for research jobs.
You will work with more than one advisor if you get your Ph.D. This is helpful for several reasons. First, you will be exposed to both advisor’s networks. Say you are applying for a job. It really helps if someone can vouch for you or knows of your advisor’s work. If you have two advisors, this doubles your chances of having that connection (you would be surprised how small this world is!). Also, if you are interested in becoming a professor, being exposed to two different mentoring styles will definitely help you figure out what works.
It will give you more skills if you continue on to get your Ph.D. By doing a Master’s and a Ph.D., you will likely get to work with two different taxa and/or study systems and potentially learn different skills. For example, your Master’s could involve genetic techniques, while your Ph.D. might involve tracking animals with GPS transmitters.
It will help you prepare for your Ph.D. if you decide to get one. From your Master’s, you will learn what you don’t like as much as what you do like. In the example mentioned above, maybe you realized you love research, but you just don’t love genetics. A Ph.D. after a Master’s gives you an opportunity to pivot.
Master’s Cons:
In my opinion, there are few cons of getting a Master’s first.
You have to move twice (unless you do your Ph.D. at the same place as your Master’s). This can be costly and is just plain annoying. I hate moving!
If you are interested in international projects, these tend to be more difficult to do for Master’s projects. This is because it’s just harder to do international projects during shorter time frames (securing funds, permits, etc.). However, if your adviser consistently works internationally, especially if it’s in the same location, they may be able to secure funds for you. You can also always do international for your Ph.D.
Ph.D. Straight Through: Pros and Cons
Ph.D. Pros:
If you go straight through and get your Ph.D., you can finish faster. (That being said, my Ph.D. took me 6.5 years. If I got a Master’s first, the experience that I learned during my Master’s could have resulted in me taking less time to get my Ph.D. However, there are a lot of factors that determine that. In my case, my field work was delayed and I didn’t even get my dung samples until year three of my Ph.D.)
You can get better funding opportunities. At my university, a Ph.D. qualified you for a life sciences fellowship, which meant you didn’t have to teach and you got a higher stipend. This was not available to Master’s students.
You can always change it to a Master’s if you decide you don’t want a Ph.D. In my case however, I didn’t start collecting data until my third year. If I changed my program to a Master’s, it would have taken me roughly the same amount of time and effort to finish and get a Ph.D.
You will only have to move once. This can save you time and money.
You get all of your courses done at once.

Ph.D. Cons:
The cons will pretty much all be opposite of the pros in Masters. Briefly, they are:
You may have fewer publishing opportunities.
You will only have one advisor and only access to their network.
Getting a Ph.D. can over-qualify you for jobs. If you apply for MS level jobs as a Ph.D., you will have to work extra hard in your cover letter to convince them that this is the job that you want.
It can potentially be hard to change to a Masters if you change your mind depending on your research
You have fewer opportunities to learn new skills.
You will have fewer opportunities to take cool or useful courses (like stats, which is extremely important in this career). Although some of you may think it might be a pro to take fewer courses and get it all done with.

I am 17 year old male in the UK. I have a Citroen Saxo 1.1L 3 door 2000 car. I bought the car for 800. It is not modified in any way and it is in a secure garage every night. Having my dad as the policyholder is not beneficial because although he has been driving for over 30 years, he has always had a company car and has never owned, and therefore never had insurance. I have looked everywhere for insurance and the cheapest is 3500, most quotes are over 4000 and around a third of the results are over 10000. This is 3rd part F+T and using sites such as Confused, Compare the Market etc. I also tried getting quotes direct from the company and it's no cheaper. If anything it's more expensive. Which companies should I try, and has anyone else been getting ridiculous quotes like this?""

I was involved in a fender bender where no party admitted fault. Other persons insurance company went to arbitration against my insurance company to recover their loss. Arbitration Panel decided in our favor i.e. I am not at fault hence need not pay the damages. Total loss amount listed by other party was $800. My car did not have any damage worth repairing. (Also, I am lazy and passive enough to not pursue too hard for a minor dent.) After arbitration settlement other person filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court. I was pretty sure that a judge cant do anything after arbitration. To my surprise judge assessed that out of $800 - $250 was the deductible paid by other person. Prior Arbitration did not include that amount hence he can adjudicate on this $250. He adjudicated against me for $250 + legal fee. Judge also told me that I need not worry about this money as my insurance will pay for it. (Most ridiculous judge and judgment I have ever seen, but thats a separate matter) I called up my insurance company. They are willing to pay this amount. My question is  will making them pay increase my insurance premium. I have a pretty clean record with no at-fault accidents. I pay about $1000 per year for two cars in WA state. Hi there. I have a question. I want to SUE my Car insurance company because they refuse to pay for my stolen car which is been more then 6 months and still hasn't been recovered. At the time i asked for insurance my driver license was suspended already suspended and the reason why was because of child support for which i was going thru courts with my ex. First i decided to insure my car liability and my car was paid in full. On the liability contract it wasn't any question regarding my driver license either was suspended or not. After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. Now my broker told me that insurance company should had run your driving record before they issue insurance to you and if they done that they were gone see your driver lisence was suspended. But when my broker asked them why they didnt run it Their answer was that they trusted me based on the contract i signed which to my opinion is BS. Now i want to sue them and all the lawyers they refuse to get my case and my believe is because my car is worth about $4800.00 and they don't see how they can make money out of me and i don't have to pay them up front. Now if i go on small claim max i can go is $3000.00 ????

I have one at fault accident on my record. It was a rear-end collision and it is a 2 pt. accident in California. I was shopping for new insurance. I made this statement about the at fault accident when filling out the forms for a quote online. At first GEICO the GEICO rates were looking way better than Progressive or other insurance companies so I thought I'd go with them. But when I went to go pay online, they did one last DMV record check, and came back with a higher rate. Even though I had stated the accident in the form previously. They waited to verify this at the very end and not earlier which I found annoying--they had my driver's licence earlier in the application process, so why wait till the very end! When filling out the Progressive quote forms, I also stated the info about my accident where asked. At the end, the form still considered me a Good Driver and the quote was much cheaper than Progressive. I went to pay and it did not recalculate my quote after a DMV check like GEICO did. I paid and am wondering if I am going to hear back from them saying I need to pay more. But I gave them all the info and I do now have a policy. So it appears that GEICO is tougher when it comes to having an accident, and Progressive doesn't let one at fault accident ruin a good driver discount? Does anyone have experience with this?""

September 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech that would shape the worldview of a generation. At Rice University in Houston, Texas in front of 35,000 people he said, “We choose to go to the moon.”
To understand the significance lets go back to 1961 when Kennedy became president. Many Americans believed the U.S. was losing the Space Race. The USSR successfully launched the first artificial satellite. The first man in space was a Russian before the U.S. could launch its first astronaut.
But Kennedy said, “We choose to go to the moon.” And about 6 years later the first man that landed on the moon was Neil Armstrong, July 1969. Here is a snippet of the speech. Fast forward to 1:33. It gives me chills!

Friday, September 18th CORFAC International’s fall conference was in Denver, CO. The keynote address was by Phil Gwoke (pronounced Gwokee). Phil is a generational expert with Bridgeworks. Guess what they do…? Generational consulting.
Phil kicked things off like a pro. There were technical delays but he started anyway warming up the crowd. Dude is fuuuuuuunny! He has a natural way about him. It takes a bit to realize, but he may be a Star Wars nerd, which only added to his likability.
We knew we were going to hear from a ‘generational consultant’… which meant clearly, we were going to hear about millennials… which candidly, I’ve heard about many times before. But Phil established quickly that his perspectives on the topic were going to be presented differently.
Asking someone to change is not telling them what they are doing is wrong. But sometimes it feels like that.
If there was one theme that anchored the presentation it was that generations are influenced by the events and conditions that existed during their formative year.
So what generations are we talking about? They are listed in the image below with their dates of birth. Yes… that’s Phil.

The youngest Baby Boomers are 53 today
Gen X’ers are between 38 – 52 which are their power years

After laying the groundwork of data, and characterizing each generation, Phil brilliantly took everyone in the room on a journey reminiscing their formative years. It was great! There was something for everyone!
The Great Depression and World War II for the Traditionalist; Vietnam and Woodstock for the Baby Boomers; MTV and personal computers for Gen X; Terrorism and expansive technology for Millennials. There was so much more! He really drilled into the influences of each era.
But what he also did that was fascinating, was contrasted the experiences of baby boomers and gen-xers with NASA. Same institution different influences for each generation.
“We choose to go to the moon.” Kennedy. Winning the space race. Neil Armstrong. “One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.” Boomers experienced the height of optimism.
Challenger engulfed in smoke and fire. A social studies teach perished. President Reagan “We will never forget them… as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and “slipped the surly bonds of earth” to “touch the face of God.” Generation X experienced the height of pessimism.
That was a good one Phil. You primed us good for what you had to come.

We touched on Boomers and Gen-X above with the NASA example. Let’s go deeper into this concept of how experiences influenced each generation.
Boomers’ experiences lead them to being competitive in the workplace. Showing up early meant making a good impression. They turned the 40-hour work week into the 50 and 60-hour work week. They taught us that, you don’t dress for the job you have, you dress for the job you want. At work, you work hard. Stay late. Do what it takes. Relax at home. They communicated on the rotary phone. Conversations with friends and family were by appointment. “I’ll call you tomorrow night between 5:00 – 7:00 pm.” Formal.
Gen-X was the first generation growing up that was told “you’re not going to be as good as your parents.” They were left alone in front of the TV. This era was the start of the 24-hour news cycle. Depressing. Their pop culture mantra – Just Do It. Subtitle – because no one else will do it. Work hard, play hard. Do twice as much in less time. Xers saw the life deterioration with Boomers and introduced work-life balance. Communication was by pagers and answering machines. Brief and to the point.
Millennials were raised by Boomers. That’s ironic. They were the first generation that did not have to filter communication through gatekeepers. Moms and Dads. They never had to formalize themselves in that way. Millennials are often characterized as “influenced by technology.” Every generation was influenced by technology. The difference with Millennials is how rapidly technology advanced during their formative years. They went from the Macintosh to the iPhone. They expect dramatic change. The Upgrade Generation. The mindset is that if “I don’t experience an upgrade every 18-24 months, I will become obsolete.”
Holy ah-ha moment! Err… I mean Takeaway. The big fear as an employer is that you invest so much into Millennial employees only to have them leave within 2-3 years. Except if you can create “upgrade” opportunities within your organization shazzam… problem solved!!!
But are Millennials so significant that companies have to reimagine everything? Let’s dance with some numbers.
The largest cohort in the country right now is Millennials, age 20-24
By 2020, half of the American workforce will be comprised of Millennials
By 2025, 75% of the global workforce will be comprised of Millennials
Millennials were spending $2.45 trillion by 2015
Millennials will outpace Boomer earning by 2018
There are currently 5 million Millennial millionaires
That is a substantial demographic shift. And it doesn’t matter which generation you are (Traditionalist, Boomer, X-er or Millennial), there are generational blind spots in the workplace.
For example, there is a line between Boomers and X-ers. You have to physically go to the workplace to do work. There is a work life and a personal life. With Millennials, there is a change in thinking. For them the definition of hard work is that you’re always on. For them there is work life integration.
Millennials could be terrific for the company though. They are diverse, tech savvy, collaborative and socially accepting. Yes, they require constant feedback. But it’s coming from a place of wanting to improve themselves and to be meaningful.
Now, if you want to give Millennials a real challenge, here’s what you do. It’s great. Phil was telling us how his company did this. I was practically in tears when he was telling us about it.
Ok, so get a bunch of Generation Edge (born 1996-2010) interns to your company and have the Millennials be in charge of them!!! That’ll give them a dose. Gen-Edge is the name Bridgeworks gave this group. They explain why in the link. This generation was raised by Gen-X who elevated Helicopter Parenting to Apache Helicopter Parenting.
To bring it all home, Phil gave us some practical closing thoughts. The first set came from the 2016 Global Talent Trends from LinkedIn.
The #1 thing candidates want to know about your company is what the culture is like. Display your culture.
The #1 place to find new job candidates is referrals from existing employees.
The final closing thoughts Phil challenged us with are not foreign – Lead with your “Why”. Simon Sinek. When communicating with clients, employees, vendors, suppliers, everyone… lead with your “Why”.
But more than that, create opportunities for everyone to contribute to your “Why”.

Speech: Foreign Secretary speech at the British Chamber of Commerce
Good afternoon everybody, it is absolutely fantastic to be here in front of an audience of people who are dynamic, energetic, can do, and actually get out there make and sell things. Because sometimes I get a bit impatient when I hear people droning and moaning about the state of the world, and I hear them warn that the sky is about to fall on our heads, and I feel like saying come off it sunshine.
Every generation hears its prognostications of gloom, and yet look at us today. We are living longer than ever before. We are healthier than ever before. The air quality in London is getting better steadily, thanks to decisive action by the previous mayor, and for all I know by the current mayor.
Thanks to the miracles of commerce, the energies and enterprise of everybody in this room, we have access to technological comforts, some of which you’re using to take pictures of me or indeed consult in the hope of something more interesting. We have access to comforts that previous generations would have found absolutely mind boggling, and it is entirely thanks to free market capitalism that our food is better than ever before, and you are unbelievably full of beans and healthy.
And I am sure you all ate fruit for breakfast. Can you cast your mind back to breakfast? You’re all so young and thrusting that you probably don’t remember the time that I do, when pineapples came only in a tin with a gloopy syrup. And pineapples were thought so generally exotic 100 years ago that architects would place them as finials on the top of the top of railings or pillars or other architectural features. There are plenty of examples of those fruits outside this room on the streets of Westminster.
But today there is a force that brings the pineapple, the papaya, the guava and the melon to London every night on the 10.30 flight from Accra in Ghana. And actually I caught that flight myself in the last couple of weeks, I literally physically sat on top of 13 tonnes of chilled fruit, packed and ready to be distributed to the stalls of London, and I can tell you authoritatively that the same sliced fresh pineapple, retailing at rather different prices depending on whether it is going to Aldi or to Waitrose, is turning up in our shops the following morning. There’s nothing wrong with the differential in prices, by the way, it’s called branding isn’t it?
And what is the benign force of the wind beneath the wings of that plane? What’s allowing that to happen? Globalisation.
And today globalisation is a word that is acquiring negative overtones and it’s become a sort of taboo word in the political lexicon. And so this afternoon I want to reclaim globalisation. I want to show you all that this is a positive force and that a global Britain is a prosperous Britain. And the agenda of the Prime Minister Theresa May and the government is a cause that is more important than ever. Because trade for the first time in decades is declining as a proportion of the growth of global GDP. And for the first time we are seeing protectionist measures on the rise across the world. And as everybody knows and has been endlessly discussed, we are seeing a series of related but by no means identical political events, in which populations are said to be rebelling, against what had been seen as a settled consensus.
And people feel that they aren’t getting a fair suck of the sauce bottle, as they say in Australia, the wealth gap is growing. And so there’s been a temptation amongst some politicians to respond in what I think is the wrong way, by hauling up the drawbridge and to call time on globalisation. And I think that instinct is profoundly wrong and it makes no economic sense as I’m sure everybody in this room today understands.
Those pineapples are good business for Africa, and indeed the British company that exports them to London is the single biggest private sector employer in Ghana. It’s putting food on the tables of some of the poorest families in the continent of Africa. And those pineapples are good for this country too, good for the supermarkets that sell at whatever price they determine. Good for the hauliers that distribute them, the airlines that carry them that might not otherwise have much in their in their holds. Good indeed I might say for every parent who has been unable to persuade their kids to eat pizza unless it has been profaned with pineapple chunks as they now so often are.
History teaches us, and all the economic evidence shows, if we close our markets, if we put up barriers, then we raise the costs for those who can least afford it. We make our industries uncompetitive. We entrench complacency. We discourage investment in capital and technology. We stifle innovation. And of course we breed suspicion and mistrust between nations. And we should never forget the old truism that when goods and services no longer cross borders, then troops and tanks do so instead.
And by rebelling against globalisation we endanger a system that has been associated with 70 years of post-war peace and prosperity, and that has allowed billions to lift themselves out of penury by toil and enterprise. Back in 1990, 37% of humanity lived in absolute poverty. Today, thanks to globalisation, that figure is less than 10%, and that figure is all the more stunning when you remember that over the same period the world’s population grew by 1.8 billion people. And it’s no coincidence that this astonishing success of the global economy coincided with a period in history of unparalleled tearing down of trade barriers. You’ll remember with the completion of the Uruguay round and all that followed.
We are determined to bring back that moment, that inspiration. And under this government led by Theresa May, Britain is preparing once again to be the leading campaigner for that liberating and enriching force. And let me be absolutely clear, as I know you’ll want to ask questions about it afterwards. We can be that great free trading nation again. And we can be ever more internationalist, and indeed we can be ever more European.
But we can change our relationship with the EU from one of membership, to one of friendship and partnership. And to use that opportunity to create a regulatory environment that members of the British Chambers of Commerce have been crying out for, for decades, that precisely suits the needs of British business and commerce, of people in this room. And to be able, for the first time in 44 years, as I say, to fulfil the Prime Minister’s vision, and be the world’s leading campaigner for free trade. Because I don’t want a rerun some of the old arguments. Let me remind you that for all of this period of 44 years of membership, we consecrated our trade policy entirely to the EU Commission. An excellent body of men and women. But it is a melancholy fact that today Britain represents 20% of EU GDP, 12% of the population and yet we have only 3% of the bureaucrats in Brussels. And I’m afraid I can’t pretend to you that we’ve been turning it around in the last few years. In the last year, in 2016, the last year leading up to the referendum, only one UK national actually succeeded in passing the concours, the exam for EU services in Brussels. And with all due respect, how can those bodies expect to have the necessary understanding of the needs of UK business and commerce to do the deals that we need? So now we need to work with our friends and our partners to ensure that we have a strong EU and a strong UK, connected by a fantastic free trade deal, and one that is manifestly in the interests of both sides, and you will be familiar with the arguments there.
There’s a massive net balance of trade in favour of our friends and partners on the other side of the channel. We are not only the biggest single consumers of German cars but also of course of French champagne. And as I never tire of telling you, Italian prosecco as well. We are pro-secco and by no means anti-pasti. We’re absolutely relentless in our consumption of EU products and that will continue. But we will we remain supportive of the EU in all the other important respects in which the UK is currently supportive: on defence cooperation, on foreign policy coordination, on counter-terrorism, on intelligence sharing, rather as a flying buttress supports a cathedral. And it is simultaneously our task, and the historic task of global Britain, to create the conditions for free trade and prosperity, not just in Europe but across the world. And above all that means global security the bedrock of economic success.
You’ll have seen the Prime Minister’s recent successful trip to Washington where she and President Trump reaffirmed their 100% commitment to NATO. It means we have a vital interest in freedom of navigation and open shipping lanes. And that is why we will shortly have two giant aircraft carriers, 70,000 tons apiece, capable of projecting British power worldwide - including through the Malacca Straits, which channel over 25% of global trade. It means helping to fight corruption and bad governance across the world. Because that is the way we encourage companies to invest in countries like Ghana and to help drive those populations up the value chain. And my point to you this morning about global Britain is that it’s right for Britain too. As other nations rise out of poverty and become more prosperous, so they buy more goods.
And of course it’s right that we spend 0.7% of GDP on overseas aid, but it’s also a way of spurring on the growth of our export markets. And I can tell you of all the things that I’ve seen in my time as Foreign Secretary, one of the most moving things has been the way we are helping kids to go to school in some of the toughest environments in the world. And we are helping literally millions of girls to be educated in the Punjab. Six million are being supported through a DFID program. Everybody in this room should be incredibly proud of what we are doing. But it’s also a massive benefit not just to the people in that part of Pakistan. It means that you promote economic growth, you reduce infant mortality, child marriage, help to contain a rising population and drive up prosperity. But that support is also good for our country as well.
I was in the classroom, I asked the girls, I said who’s your favourite author? And what do you think they said? That’s right. Congratulations to the front row for paying attention. They all as one virtually shouted out J.K. Rowling. I then asked them various other questions to which I’m sure you all know the answers about who is the headmaster and so on and so forth, and they all knew that stuff. I hope I’m not being vulgar if I say that more sales of Harry Potter worldwide mean more business for UK publishing. Don’t they? And I hope it’s not too crude to say that means more jobs for people in this city, indeed more probably for all I know, more publishers lunches in Soho. I’m not saying that you can draw a straight line from an overflowing classroom in the Punjab to an overflowing restaurant in Dean Street, but the connection is there.
Nor by the way am I saying that the UK can solve all the world’s problems. Certainly not on our own, but we can and we do make a huge difference. And we set a moral and intellectual lead for others to follow, because there is another feature of the UK which I think people sometimes forget. And that is that Britain is the most global of all the developed economies. You know there are six million Brits, one in ten of the British population who currently live and work, who are permanently resident, abroad. I don’t know – perhaps it’s the legacy of Empire, or some strange wanderlust – but whatever the cause, Britain has a bigger diaspora as a proportion of our population, than any other large rich nation. They’re bankers and diplomats and peacekeepers and aid workers scientists and ski instructors and oilmen and teachers, snooker players, movie stars, rock musicians, artists, poets, water slide testers chicken-sexers, and for all I know perhaps the odd pirate and scoundrel as well. But their presence means that Britain is more plugged in to events in distant countries than any other nation of our size and wealth.
And my point to you this afternoon is that historic global quality of Britain linked umbilically not just to our friends and partners in Europe, but also to the 93% of the world that do not live in the European Union – shortly to be 94 % of course. That global quality of the UK is a fantastic benefit and potential future economic benefit to our country, and our task obviously is to ensure that the British people are ready to take advantage of the opportunities that are opening up. We have a government determined to make sure that Britain works for everyone, to ensure that everyone feels the benefit of our economic success and we’re concentrating on skills on education, extending the ladder of opportunity to kids who have been failed by previous reforms. We’re seeing the biggest program of infrastructure investment for more than a century: nuclear power stations, cross rail, high speed rail and HS2. We’re finally getting to grips our aviation crisis so that we come up with the right idea, in the wrong place in my in my view, but nonetheless we’re making progress. And I know that Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, is determined to keep taxes low and the business environment as friendly as possible.
I think we have every reason as a nation to be confident. Many of you were wise enough not to believe those pre-referendum forecasts of economic calamity and since June 23rd the sky has obstinately failed to fall in.
The IMF predicts we will have the fastest growing economy for 2016. We have the fastest G7 economy although that didn’t last, with slightly changed figures. Like the Oscar ceremony, Germany seem to have scooped it for the time being, but we we’re right up there and the investment continues to flood in. Huge multi billion pound investments into our country. And of course we are getting the export ball back over the net. Who’d have thought this 20 years ago? Thanks to the efforts of people in this room we have a £1.1 billion trade surplus with, guess where? South Korea. It’s British cars being sold in ever growing quantities to that market. We export tea to China, bikes to Holland, boomerangs to Australia and sand to Saudi Arabia. We do still export wine to Italy and, I’m delighted to say, Nigel Farage to America.
It is the miracle of globalisation combined with British branding genius that means we not only, every night, import pineapples from Ghana but guess what? We take those pineapples and we chemically transform them, and we actually export pineapple jam to America. Can you believe that? Americans. And that’s even before we’ve done a free trade deal. It is an incredible fact that we have a trade surplus running with the United States of more than £30 billion. But they still don’t buy our beef, and indeed they refuse to eat haggis from Scotland so far. I think you’ll agree with me that if they can eat pineapple jam, they can certainly manage haggis.
I want to conclude with this thought: Britain is at its best, and all our history teaches us this, Britain is at its best when were at our most global in our outlook. And in my time as your Foreign Secretary it’s been almost overwhelming to discover that we have links and friends around the world that we have built up for centuries and in some ways and in some places that we have almost forgotten. Not least in those rapidly growing commonwealth economies but also elsewhere.
And of course we remain committed to our European markets, perhaps more so than ever, but we need to think globally again. Because a global Britain is a safer Britain and a more successful Britain. And above all a more prosperous Britain. And the same, in my view, goes for the rest of the world.

That Time I Almost Peed Myself on the Bus
Greetings! 
So, last we talked (er, you read? I guess?), we were having our first Tartiflette Tuesday (#funfacts: we haven’t had one since), and throwing probably very cherished childhood toys of my landlords children into the pool because they stare into your soul and scare the absolute crap out of you! What a time we had 😄
Well as promised at the end of the last post, there was indeed yet another trip to the Netherlands with, guess who!, Sarah to visit one of her high school friends who’s studying in a town called Leiden. This trip was especially fun because after buying my train and bus tickets to get there, we were informed that, contrary to what had been said before, there wouldn’t be room enough for me to stay at her friends house, unless I wanted to sleep on the couch... that was in the kitchen.
Activate: panic mode.
It was entirely out of budget to rent an Airbnb or find a hostel (and there surprisingly weren’t any in Leiden anyway), so I decided to tryout Couchsurfing after hearing success stories from a few friends here and there. For those who don’t know what that is, it’s basically free Airbnb, except you could literally be sleeping on someones couch and people usually only stay for a few days—I definitely didn’t know that last part. After many denials—most likely because I was staying for an entire week, and the week before Christmas—someone said they’d let me stay with them. I tried my best to find one that offered a room or at least a pull out couch, but alas alack, I was unsuccessful in this endeavor. That being said, my host, Christiaan, was incredibly sweet and we got along really well! 
The town of Leiden is small and mostly a college town, and, like most European towns/cities/everything, was adorable. Sarah, her friend and I walked around the town and absorbed the Dutch culture and were also very abruptly and rudely reminded that we had become incredibly accustomed to the warm weather that graces the south of France, and consequently almost froze to death in the Netherlands. 
I have to say, of all my trips to the Netherlands, this was definitely the chillest one I’ve had. Sarah and I were counting our pennies and only went to Amsterdam twice to avoid having to pay the train fare. Looking back, I guess I’m surprised I didn’t try to go more often, but at the same time, it was entirely too cold to be meandering around somewhere that’s also just FULL of tourists. #pass. We of course enjoyed ourselves when we did go, though. She took me to a place called the Foodhallen, which was basically like a food court you find at the mall, except the only shopping to be done was for food of literally any cuisine. French, Italian, tapas, Chinese, Japanese, you name it, they had it. And let me tell y’all, trying to pinch pennies at this place just SO DIFFICULT. Sarah and I wandered around for a while trying to decide what to eat before we realized we would literally eat at any of the places there, and when we did finally get food and sit down to eat it, it was just...so so so so so good. Painfully good, even. But anyway, when we weren’t stuffing our faces full of food in Amsterdam, we spent most of the time either wandering around Leiden, sleeping or just sitting and doing nothing. All things that make up an ideal vacation if I do say so myself. 
To shake things up, though, I made a trip to Rotterdam to visit some friends I had made over the summer while I was working with the Experiment Abroad. It was absolutely amazing to see my friends again, and even better, I was asked to be apart of their gay youth center’s—The Hangout010—drag show. It was, of course, a blast! Beyond making Christiaan think some random woman had broken into his apartment and making heads turn left and right as I walked to and from the train stations in full drag face, it was so much fun to be in such a welcoming and accepting community. Not that Nîmes is homophobic or anything of the sort, but to be somewhere where I knew the things I loved were loved by everyone around me was so comforting. For the drag show, I did my own rendition Aretha Franklin’s rendition of “Don’t Play That Song,” and I think it went pretty well! Fingers crossed for more Aevyn appearances in the future! 
So after a week or so, I headed back to Nîmes while Sarah stayed with her friend for another week or so. Overall, I’d say it was a fun trip! The only potential downfall was that Christiaan, being Dutch, was much more acclimated to the cold weather, and therefore left his apartment just a little...frigid. But then again, I guess it made it much easier to deal with the cold weather when I went outside. #giveandtake
Also worth noting about this trip to the Netherlands, in true Nigel fashion, I quite literally nearly peed myself on the bus from Paris to Amsterdam as I was daydreaming while looking out the window. Somehow, I was so lost in my thoughts that I failed to notice we had been driving along side the TGV line for about 20 minutes. So, when the TGV went flying by, I just had not mentally prepared at all and very audibly gasped, much to the surprise of the person sitting in front of me... oops. But of course that memory will be forever burned into my memory 😍  #triphighlights 
Anyway, after spending about 10 hours at home, I got on another train to meet the family in Nice! I was really excited for this trip because it was the first time a lot of my family had ever been to France, and for a couple, their first time to Europe! What I hadn’t thought of, however, was the fact that not one of them speaks French (not including you, Mom, you’re a francophone in training), so my translation services were constantly being called upon. While mildly irritating, it did feel nice to show my family a part of my life that they’ve never really seen before and to show them a new culture!
When I got there on Christmas day, I was met by my brother, his fiancée, my sister and her husband, and all SEVEN of their bags. Yes, they literally had 7 bags between the 4 of them. 3 of which belonged to my sister and brother-in-law alone, and took up all the space in the trunk. As well as being hilarious, it was also very comforting to see that my sister and I are still very much alike even as we get older 😂 .
Anyway, the first day of my family’s arrival was of course burden by jet lag, so Justin and Jess—the “Js” who had been living in Ireland—and I went into to town and ended up having an absolutely perfect day. There was not a cloud in the sky and the French Riviera blessed us with almost 70º weather. I was not mad about it, y’all.  We walked around Vieux Nice (Old Nice) and saw the gorgeous views and parks on top of Castle Hill, sat on the rocky beach and soaked up the sunshine and perfectness, sat on a balcony at a restaurant along the Promenade des Anglais and had tapas for lunch and then rode bikes along the promenade to see the sunset, which, lemme tell ya, the French Riviera is just killing the game in terms of sunsets. Does that just not sound like the most absolutely perfect day?! It was just so ideal. 
Otherwise, day trips included going to Monaco for my sisters bday which was a lot of fun and then Toulon for my bday the next day, which was kind of a bust because there’s nothing to do in Toulon, specially during the off season! But upon reflection, I decided I’d count my day with the Js (cute nickname, right?!) as my actual birthday for 2016 😂 .  We ended up having a chill New Years since we couldn’t really find anywhere/be bothered to leave. We made a scrumptious dinner, drank heartily and brought in the new year with lots of love, happiness and wine! Overall, it was a very successful trip! 
Fun things worth noting about Nice: my family is apparently not the best at determining how much food we need for a week, and so when it was time to leave, the fridge in the Airbnb was literally packed with food. It seemed like a problem, but it actually ended up being great for me because it meant I wouldn’t have to go grocery shopping when I got back! Woo! And even better, my parents had to drive me back to Nîmes so I didn’t look like an absolute fool trying to take all this food on the train, and they got to see my place and the town. That was surprisingly especially nice because my dad loved to see a French town that wasn’t infiltrated with tourists and tourist traps, but rather just French culture. 
Also worth noting about the Nice trip (ha, see what I did there? 🙃 ) was its roads, and how the cars we rented were just entirely too big for the extremely narrow, two-way French streets. It may not seem like too big of a deal, but put it to you this way: my dad taught all three of his kids to drive (including others peoples kids, apparently!) and he learned to drive in Jamaica, on a stick shift, where they drive on the right side of the road. So like, he’s a pro, and even he was freaking out about it, with hands firmly planted at ten and two at all times. Even funnier was when both of our GPSs took us to a road that was supposed to take us into town, but instead took us to a dirt road that went off a cliff, multiple times.😂 
Well that’s it for this years Christmas and bday vacation! All in all, I’d call it a very successful two weeks! Life has already gotten back to the usual flow here in Nîmes with teaching, tutoring and, of course, the everlasting search for post-TAPIF employment 🙄 . This past weekend, my housemates and I celebrated my and our friend Alec’s birthdays! That ended up being, aside from some *drama*, very successful! A lot of people ended up coming and we danced and drank the night away! #happybdaytome
As always, I love sharing these stories with y’all and am so thankful to those who make it to the end! Next up is a trip to Berlin and Hamburg (TO SEE THE WORLDS LARGEST MODEL RAILROAD *hyperventilates*) on my first solo travel trip, and probably some other fun stuff if I can afford it! Woo!

Takeaways – If Millennials Scare You, This Will Really Freak You Out!

One of the things I am committed to this year is capturing my Takeaways from the various events that I attend throughout the year and sharing them. Click here for Previous Takeaways.
September 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech that would shape the worldview of a generation. At Rice University in Houston, Texas in front of 35,000 people he said, “We choose to go to the moon.”
To understand the significance lets go back to 1961 when Kennedy became president. Many Americans believed the U.S. was losing the Space Race. The USSR successfully launched the first artificial satellite. The first man in space was a Russian before the U.S. could launch its first astronaut.
But Kennedy said, “We choose to go to the moon.” And about 6 years later the first man that landed on the moon was Neil Armstrong, July 1969. Here is a snippet of the speech. Fast forward to 1:33. It gives me chills!

January 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger launch was broadcast on TV sets in schools across America. Included on board Challenger was Christa McAuliffe, a social studies teacher who won a nationwide competition to become the first “Teacher in Space”.
“4…3…2…1… lift off.” 73 seconds had passed after those words. Challenger ascended to an altitude of 46,000 feet. And then, a ball of fire and smoke engulfed the shuttle. The TV broadcaster and control station became silent for many seconds. I was 6 years old.
Friday, September 18th CORFAC International’s fall conference was in Denver, CO. The keynote address was by Phil Gwoke (pronounced Gwokee). Phil is a generational expert with Bridgeworks. Guess what they do…? Generational consulting.
Phil kicked things off like a pro. There were technical delays but he started anyway warming up the crowd. Dude is fuuuuuuunny! He has a natural way about him. It takes a bit to realize, but he may be a Star Wars nerd, which only added to his likability.
We knew we were going to hear from a ‘generational consultant’… which meant clearly, we were going to hear about millennials… which candidly, I’ve heard about many times before. But Phil established quickly that his perspectives on the topic were going to be presented differently.
Asking someone to change is not telling them what they are doing is wrong. But sometimes it feels like that.
If there was one theme that anchored the presentation it was that generations are influenced by the events and conditions that existed during their formative year.
So what generations are we talking about? They are listed in the image below with their dates of birth. Yes… that’s Phil.
Here are interesting Takeaways:
The youngest Baby Boomers are 53 today
Gen X’ers are between 38 – 52 which are their power years
By 2025 75% of the workforce will be Millennials
The oldest Generation Edgers (more on Gen Edgers later) are 21 and starting to enter the workforce
After laying the groundwork of data, and characterizing each generation, Phil brilliantly took everyone in the room on a journey reminiscing their formative years. It was great! There was something for everyone!
The Great Depression and World War II for the Traditionalist; Vietnam and Woodstock for the Baby Boomers; MTV and personal computers for Gen X; Terrorism and expansive technology for Millennials. There was so much more! He really drilled into the influences of each era.
But what he also did that was fascinating, was contrasted the experiences of baby boomers and gen-xers with NASA. Same institution different influences for each generation.
“We choose to go to the moon.” Kennedy. Winning the space race. Neil Armstrong. “One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.” Boomers experienced the height of optimism.
Challenger engulfed in smoke and fire. A social studies teach perished. President Reagan “We will never forget them… as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and “slipped the surly bonds of earth” to “touch the face of God.” Generation X experienced the height of pessimism.
That was a good one Phil. You primed us good for what you had to come.

How can you Millennial-Proof your company?
Who are Millennials most afraid of?
We touched on Boomers and Gen-X above with the NASA example. Let’s go deeper into this concept of how experiences influenced each generation.
Boomers’ experiences lead them to being competitive in the workplace. Showing up early meant making a good impression. They turned the 40-hour work week into the 50 and 60-hour work week. They taught us that, you don’t dress for the job you have, you dress for the job you want. At work, you work hard. Stay late. Do what it takes. Relax at home. They communicated on the rotary phone. Conversations with friends and family were by appointment. “I’ll call you tomorrow night between 5:00 – 7:00 pm.” Formal.
Gen-X was the first generation growing up that was told “you’re not going to be as good as your parents.” They were left alone in front of the TV. This era was the start of the 24-hour news cycle. Depressing. Their pop culture mantra – Just Do It. Subtitle – because no one else will do it. Work hard, play hard. Do twice as much in less time. Xers saw the life deterioration with Boomers and introduced work-life balance. Communication was by pagers and answering machines. Brief and to the point.
Millennials were raised by Boomers. That’s ironic. They were the first generation that did not have to filter communication through gatekeepers. Moms and Dads. They never had to formalize themselves in that way. Millennials are often characterized as “influenced by technology.” Every generation was influenced by technology. The difference with Millennials is how rapidly technology advanced during their formative years. They went from the Macintosh to the iPhone. They expect dramatic change. The Upgrade Generation. The mindset is that if “I don’t experience an upgrade every 18-24 months, I will become obsolete.”
Holy ah-ha moment! Err… I mean Takeaway. The big fear as an employer is that you invest so much into Millennial employees only to have them leave within 2-3 years. Except if you can create “upgrade” opportunities within your organization shazzam… problem solved!!!
But are Millennials so significant that companies have to reimagine everything? Let’s dance with some numbers.
The largest cohort in the country right now is Millennials, age 20-24
By 2020, half of the American workforce will be comprised of Millennials
By 2025, 75% of the global workforce will be comprised of Millennials
Millennials were spending $2.45 trillion by 2015
Millennials will outpace Boomer earning by 2018
There are currently 5 million Millennial millionaires
That is a substantial demographic shift. And it doesn’t matter which generation you are (Traditionalist, Boomer, X-er or Millennial), there are generational blind spots in the workplace.
For example, there is a line between Boomers and X-ers. You have to physically go to the workplace to do work. There is a work life and a personal life. With Millennials, there is a change in thinking. For them the definition of hard work is that you’re always on. For them there is work life integration.
Millennials could be terrific for the company though. They are diverse, tech savvy, collaborative and socially accepting. Yes, they require constant feedback. But it’s coming from a place of wanting to improve themselves and to be meaningful.
Now, if you want to give Millennials a real challenge, here’s what you do. It’s great. Phil was telling us how his company did this. I was practically in tears when he was telling us about it.
Ok, so get a bunch of Generation Edge (born 1996-2010) interns to your company and have the Millennials be in charge of them!!! That’ll give them a dose. Gen-Edge is the name Bridgeworks gave this group. They explain why in the link. This generation was raised by Gen-X who elevated Helicopter Parenting to Apache Helicopter Parenting.
To bring it all home, Phil gave us some practical closing thoughts. The first set came from the 2016 Global Talent Trends from LinkedIn.
The #1 thing candidates want to know about your company is what the culture is like. Display your culture.
The #1 place to find new job candidates is referrals from existing employees.
The final closing thoughts Phil challenged us with are not foreign – Lead with your “Why”. Simon Sinek. When communicating with clients, employees, vendors, suppliers, everyone… lead with your “Why”.
But more than that, create opportunities for everyone to contribute to your “Why”.
Easier said right…?
