Can we be honest?Jessica makes a lot more sense as the parental figure of the Spiderband rather than Miguel but people would rather dub the guy who tried to kill a 15 year old a good dadish for him and his friends instead of letting a black woman be the center of their fan content.I get that has potential to turn her into a m@mmy but i do not for a second think that's the fandom's concern with it and there's an important aspect we need to note that Jessica wouldn't be coddling them,she's in her mid-30s and they're all teens so it only makes sense she'd be their caretaker and she has a kid on the way so it would also be logical for her to want practice on that.Also sorry not sorry but nobody's ever reduced Miguel don't to just 'Spiderdad' and make loads of solo content for him so there's no reason Spidermom!Jessica shouldn't be the same(other than the obvious one i don't need to say and kinda already did).Oh also just thought of another reason and it's that 3/6 of the Spiderkids are black and one's a trans girl and Jessica's canon trans in the comics and it's not like the crew's debunked it and there's a whole nother movie left so,well!!!

in honor of spiderverse being a year old, it’s time for me speak my truths on some characters and gimme a chance to defend and slander them🫡

The Flaws and Pros of Spiderverse Characters

Gwen Stacy

now, many people do not like gwen stacy when the movie premiered. but let me defend her first. gwen literally had to deal with her friend, her only friend, be a victim of bullying and decide to himself to be strong and instead accidentally became a monster and had to kill him. he dies in her arms, and his last words are.. it’s gonna be ok. imagine how guilty she feels to this day, and then having her father unknowingly hunt her down for a misunderstanding. and when he finds out that she’s spiderwoman, his first instinct was to feel betrayed, and try to shoot and arrest her, his own daughter. when she thinks she has a place to stay, and a strong woman to look up too, she’s instead caught in a tough spot with making her mentor proud, and trying to keep the multiverse safe. knowing that your friend and your lover is an opp to the place that you have no choice to be live at, is really tough. and then having to break his heart, losing your friend, and having the people who you trusted throw you under the bus, because of their own beliefs, it’s honestly a nail in the coffin. gwen tried to keep miles safe, she wanted to keep herself safe, she wanted to be a good person for everyone, but everyone expected her to do one thing for them, and not for herself. though, she broke miles’ trust, she lied to him, she wasn’t focused on the mission, and rio and jefferson think that she’s the reason on why their son is missing.

Peter B. Parker

some people don’t like peter b. and that’s okay. he also betrayed miles, even though he knew miles for a year and his potential. but he also knew about him being an anomaly, not helping or defending gwen enough, tied him up and was constantly treating miles with sass and crap in the first film, was barely even a mentor, and was taking his daughter with him to HQ instead of with MJ. but everyone tends to forget how bad peter had it in the first film.. the divorce, the death of aunt may, his respect as spiderman was fading, his depression.. he felt useless, and the sole reason why he was determined to stay and behind and stop the collider, was mostly because he wanted to collider to kill him. he had it rough, and now that he seems more happier and carefree in the sequel, we tend to forget that he wants to believe all of the canon and anomaly stuff, because his whole family might be gone.

Jessica Drew

i’m pretty sure almost everyone hated this woman right there, and that is also ok. she went from caring and helping gwen into a place she so desperately needed, to quickly being cold and irritated whenever gwen messed up. and due to everything her boss said about miles, she was also quick to be a bitch to him, and later joined the rest of the society to beat on him, and didn’t bother to help gwen when miguel expelled her. im gonna try and explain this, (before they say that i love white people and hate black women😭) jess is pregnant, busy with thousands of work since she’s the second in command in the society, seemingly mourning from her dead husband, and having no one else to care about. but, she felt awful when gwen put her and everyone in the society in check about their morals. she went from defending and doing anything miguel said, to helping gwen and probably helping the spider-gang in the next sequel. the reason why she’s a bitch to miles, is because she doesn’t even know him like that, and with everything miguel says, she probably thinks that it’s true. the reason why she seems so serious about her work, is because she wants to keep the team in line and everyone else safe, not wanting to make the multiverse collapse. she wants her baby to be in a universe where her world isn’t being at the constant stake of collapsing. i may not like her character, because the movie and promotion set her up, but she only deserves some hate, not all.

Miguel O’hara

The main man himself. Everyone either loves him, or hates him. And that is also alright, because this is what trauma does to a nigga. Miguel is a complex character, and a very complex hero. He does try to help, but in his own weird way. All he ever wanted was a family, but due to him breaking the canon, it caused his daughter and everyone else in that world to die. Meaning the whole earth was wiped out, including babies, families, grandparents, pets, and everyone else. This caused everything he thought about the canon, to change. He was serious and devoted to trying to fix it, and protect it. And just because it changed his personality and mental health, didn’t take away his heroic nature. He made the Spider society to make sure that everyone else can help preserve their own safeties, he stays up day and night watching over everyone’s universes, regarding his own. And yes, there is literally no denying, it was fucked up for what he did to both gwen and miles. He single-handedly ruined Gwen, Miles, and Peter’s friendship. Because Miles refused and was running to his father’s life, Miguel then proceeded to traumatize and degrade Miles, bodyslamming, turning into a vampire, and sending everyone to hunt him down. And as for Gwen, literally the moment he met her, he was just annoyed with her. Then, he was quick to be frustrated and disappointed with her, for messing up. And despite knowing the last time she was there, she almost got arrested and shot at and having no one else there she can trust, he sends her home. Sure, he’s not best spiderman at heart, but the fate of the multiverse is at his shoulders. Mistakes can lead to his fate breaking, and everything will be doomed.

Across the Spider-Verse was so weird because it's over two hours of just build-up with no payoff? This whole movie felt like a set up for the third part in the way the MCU does. And the thing is, they introduced two very interesting topics: parenthood and "opposing" police and then didn't deliver on either. The parenthood storyline featured set-ups like Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) and her baby. Gwen's "will you adopt me?" and possible found family especially with the repeated discussions on mentorship later in the movie. Gwen's dad commenting on how difficult parenthood is. Rio talking about how hard it is to let go of Miles being her little man. Jeff's talk with spider-man and that thing about spreading his wings. Peter B. Parker and Mayday. Miguel losing his daughter. Like there were so many threads that connected this theme of parenthood and kids learning how to be kind and responsible from adults but that they still need freedom and healthy rebellion even against loved ones. but it never went anywhere and none of it felt connected. at least not within this movie...which is 2h 20min long.

The scene where Miles is about to tell Rio he is Spider-Man could have been so interesting because the thread connecting all spider-people was NEVER cops- it was "Uncle Ben". It was and always has been family, grief, parental role-models and responsibility. but what also connects them is that all of these spider-people lied to their loved ones about their secret identity. right? like lack of communication and lying in order to "protect" them. and while the scene where you realize Miles went into the wrong universe was done fantastically - the music and atmosphere was so good - imagine how good it would have been if Miles chose to break the cycle of pain and death by being open with Rio. he breaks the cycle by being responsible, honest and having trust in his family! and they have to learn how to let him go and "fly" while trusting he will come home safe and that they will be able to care for him. + it would tie at least one theme in this movie together. but it was a fake out scene instead.

but this movie couldn't fully deliver on the parental theme because it goes hand-in-hand with the weird pro-cop thing. you have spider-punk who is there to question all authority but he can't be in the movie for too long because you just KNOW he's anti-police and we can't have that in this movie that literally relies on the assumption that what makes spider-people spider-man is that a fucking police chief dies. and also the whole spider organisation imprisoning anomalies and being judge jury and executioner of what is "right" for the multiverse, and Miguel BEATING THE SHIT out of Miles while telling him he was the original anomaly, that he is a mistake, and so on...(and lets not forget Miles is a young Black boy and all of this carried implications) and the whole plotline that the whole reason this spider-society exists is to specifically target MILES.....bro the implications are so fucking concerning.

and i mean from the first movie miles wants to become spider-man to "help" people the way his dad does so pro-cop idolization was there from the start. but then this sequel attempts to have some criticism of it as well with Gwen's storyline with her dad. where he almost shoots and attempts to arrest her. and i was watching that scene and thinking "you know this is really good criticism because it shows that 'good' cops aren't a thing because they fundamentally are there to protect a system and not actual justice." but then later in the movie they do a 180 and Gwen straight up goes "you're one of the good cops dad. you pick up that badge because if you didn't, worse people then you would" and it's like what kind of "not all cops. the good ones are somehow exempt from the system" bullshit is that? and i thought when she said "you're a good cop, dad" that she was gonna follow it up with "but you're a bad person because of it." and that would have been such a banger line and i got so hyped because that line was so good in my head but no they just straight up went the pro-cop route. also the whole "the thread that connects all spider-men is the death of a chief of police" made no fucking sense. why would the death of his girlfriends dad be super personal to Pavitr and motivate him to be a better Spider-Man???? literally what. WHY was the "thing that connects all spider-men" made to be a fucking police chief. like I'm sorry that's literally so stupid I was sitting there so fucking confused like "it was family????? the line was always with great power comes great responsibility and that they learn the lesion from someone near and dear to them. and Jeff taught miles to "go by the book" and Mile's opposing this spider-society is him refusing to do that (tying into the theme of rebellion) -> so he thematically realizes he need to oppose organisations that follow rules fundamentally opposed to his morals of not killing people....but he doesn't question his dads job? idk between that parallel and spider-punk, and gwen and her dad i thought something fruitful was gonna be there

but i guess i should be that surprised because marvel has been ramming the pro-military and pro-state propaganda for years now. it just feels so performative in this movie where gwen has "protect tans kids" on her wall and miles has a "BLM" pin.

back to my Spiderman!Aizawa AU what if he's in the Spider Society because before the Spider Society was a thing, another spider was thrown into his universe when he was 15 and that Spider is Jessica Drew

And Miguel gave Jessica the permission to give Shouta a portal watch. Although Shouta wanted to refuse because that would probably mean that he needs to join the Spider Society (which is already a hassle because he's 1.) already a pro hero 2.) he's a U.A teacher, and 3.) he barely gets any proper sleep), Miguel said that he can just stay in his universe and take care of any anomoly and call them once the anomoly is now held captive (since it's technically his job as a hero too anyway, to catch villains)

Timeskip post-ATSV movie, Jessica made a mistake on contacting Shouta to tell them about the recent events with Miles and he was absolutely fuming. So he opened a portal and marched towards Miguel's ass and gave him a 5 hour screaming lecture about his stupidity by telling a literal child that he "shouldn't exist" and the same thing goes to EVERYONE in the Spider Society (He gave Spider-Cat the "I'm not mad just disappointed" speech)

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that the family-oriented network's second annual "Great American Autumn" event is back as of Sept. 2 with seven new original movie premieres debuting through mid-October.

Tony keeps his poker face on when Clint latches on to the poker. Okay. Good. They'll be playing poker. With Carol. He can get some pizza, and some chocolate milk. Maybe some other snacks for the table, soft pretzels and popcorn. Tony didn't even care if Clint did beat him. As long as it distracted him for long enough to not drink.

Carol looks over again and nods. "Sure. Sounds like fun."

She approached them both. "We should call Rhodey," she suggested. "Make it a night. I wonder if Jessica would be able to come over," she looked at Clint. "Jones. Not Drew. Don't worry. As much as I think Jess would love a chance at beating your ass at poker, she's going through some things right now."

Tony pulled out his phone and started texting Rhodey. "You think Jessica won't be able to come because of Dani? She can probably bring her along. I have the place set up for Brandy."

Tony was very pro more people. And anyone fairly neutral would be good. The more people there, the more likely Clint would actually start enjoying the game and be distracted from the drinking. But he didn't want to overwhelm Clint or accidentally invite the wrong person that ended up pushing him to wanting to drink again.

He looked over at Clint. "What do you think? You want more people? Make a night of it? I can see if Patsy wants to come 'round. Or whoever you want."

"I've been working with Gambit and Rogue lately, if you really want test your skill, Hawkeye," Carol said.

When Carol's name is brought into this, with Tony singling out Clint; who had came in here tonight and confessed that he was thinking about DRINKING. That it was hard, and he had been looking for one reason to drink, trigger level to drinking going from a six which may sound high up to DRINK tonight.

He had said that to a whole room of people here tonight, and than when they left had answered Tony with the such a statement. So he's screwing himself here, yet as his friend calls attention to his other friend? He is contemplating the risk-punishment factor here of throwing his fist at Tony's nose, in this church, at the end of an aa meeting. That'd be a surefire way to ban him from this place, and than possibly lead to taking the train ride out of here and landing in a bar, maybe.

Summary: Lisa arrives at Aunt May's cottage and catches up with the Spider-gang, meanwhile Miguel is running behind schedule.

Parker Manor - Buffalo, New York - 2 weeks later 

One by one, the guests arrive at the manor, bringing gifts, food, and ingredients to make even more food. Plus cookies, we couldn't forget that. Lisa was one of the last to arrive, hitching a ride with Jessica Drew and her husband. 

Miguel agreed to the idea of spending Christmas with the Spider-gang, so the pair were the last to RSVP to Miles. They still had a wonderful dinner with Gabriel and Dana after their talk, even hitting the ice rink at Rockefeller Center afterwards. Lisa lost count of how many times she nearly fell over or tripped herself, but she got better over the course of the night, especially with Dana teaching her.

That night in fact she had done a lot of skating with Dana. Not that she was complaining, Dana was an absolute delight that night. Lisa used the opportunity to reconnect and catch up with her, especially so now that she and Gabriel are dating. 

Speaking of the O’Hara brothers, the two of them were almost like pros. They tried ice hockey and played for their high school teams as a bonding experience when they were younger, so they were complete naturals. Naturals to the sense where they’d try to trip each other on the ice. Lisa remembers Dana scolding Gabriel at one point when Miguel just caught himself on the ice, picking himself up and the rest of them just laughed.

Lisa thinks it was the hardest she’s ever seen Miguel laugh in a while, or smile as much as he did.  

She also noticed the brothers talking and whispering among themselves frequently over the course of the night. What were they talking about? Last minute gift ideas? 

Since Miguel and Lisa would be spending Christmas at Aunt May’s Manor, Lisa gave Gabriel and Dana their gifts early over dinner. Dana was over the moon with her bracelet and Gabriel was ecstatic about the new VR game he got. After the double date night, Lisa and Miguel went back to the apartment, exhausted and quickly fell asleep.

From the following morning until the next week, it was getting the last bit of Christmas shopping done, wrapping the last of the gifts, saving the city once or twice, running other important errands until Lisa finally saw Miguel off for his Alchemax business trip. She dropped him off at the airport, hugging him tighter and longer than normal. Miguel didn’t complain and gladly returned the gesture.

“I’ll be back before you know it,” He offered her a reassuring smile. “I promise,”

After he got on the plane, it had been a quiet week. Villainy and crime was at a surprising all time low. Lisa took it as a sign that hopefully even bad guys took a break for the holidays once in a while. 

When she arrived at the manor with Jessica, her husband kind enough to drive and drop them off, Lisa was narrowly bombarded with bear hugs as Miles, Gwen, and Pav surrounded her. 

“You made it!” Miles cheered. 

“I’m here!” Lisa laughed, trying her best to wrap her arms around the three of them. “It’s so good to see you guys,”

“Lemme get that for you Musey,” Hobie approached her, offering the woman a friendly nod as he grabbed her and Jess’s suitcases from the trunk. 

“Thank you, Hobie,” Jessica smiled. “That’s actually nice of you,”

“Heh, I believe in Christmas miracles,” Hobie teased, winking at the pregnant spider-woman before carrying the bags inside. 

Jessica kisses her husband goodbye, reassuring him that if something comes up with the baby, she’ll call him right away. Lisa smiles at the exchange, already missing Miguel, but she tries to stay positive, knowing that he’ll try his best to keep his promise. She reaches into the back seat of the car, carrying a box containing the last of the Christmas presents. 

“Is there still enough room under the tree, May?” Lisa asks with a grin as the group begins to ascend the front porch steps. 

“Surprisingly, though it’s quickly becoming an island of itself,” May chuckled as she let them inside. 

Lisa took a peek inside the grand living room of the manor and the interior was breathtaking. It was like something out of a classic 1920’s movie with a beautiful fireplace, the fire already burning. The Christmas tree was huge, decorated with an arrangement of ornaments, lights, and streamers, it was like something out of a Christmas play. 

Miles was very sweet and took everyone’s coats and brushed off the snow as Lisa carried the box of gifts into the living room. 

“Miguel is coming later?” Pav asked her as he helped her put the presents under the tree. 

“Yeah, he’ll be flying in after he wraps up his business trip,” She nodded as she put the last of the gifts under the tree. “Although it will be cutting it close. They just had to push back the date,”

“If I know Miguel, yes his work is important,” A familiar voice echoed across the room as Peter B. entered the living room with little MayDay strapped into her holster. “But he always comes through,”

“Peter!” Lisa smiled as she got up and offered him a hug. “I didn’t see you come in,”

“Early bird gets the worm as they always say,” Peter B. grinned, gently taking MayDay’s hand to make the toddler wave at Lisa, “MJ and I arrived earlier to help May get started on the food. Say hi to Aunty Lisa May-May!”

“Hweewo,” MayDay smiled brightly, her eyes twinkling with excitement. 

“Hey MayDay, you’ve gotten so big!” Lisa gently ruffled her red hair curls, making the baby laugh. “Picking up a few words too?”

“Yeah, she started talking a couple months back,” Peter B. smiled proudly, immediately taking out his phone. “You wanna see her first word?”

He plays back the video, MJ feeding MayDay some crackers for a snack when the little toddler suddenly yelps. “CRACKER!” 

“Oh my god, that’s so cute!” Lisa fawned, her heart melting at the display. 

“I know right? She does that every time she sees a cracker,” Peter B. laughed. “Oh, I can’t wait to show Miguel, he’s gonna die! Where is the big guy, is he not with you?”

“He’s flying in today actually, coming straight from his business trip,” Lisa nodded. “I’m hoping to hear back from him soon,”

“Well there’s still plenty of holiday activities to help pass the time,” Aunt May smiled. “Gwen, I have to grab more wood for the fire, can you help MJ with preparing dinner?”

“Yes ma’am!” Gwen saluted the elderly woman before sauntering over to the kitchen. 

“You’re the last to arrive, so lemme give you a tour,” Miles offered with a kind smile as he motioned his head to the side, signaling Lisa to follow him. “Come on! You gotta see this place!” 

They end the afternoon with Miles giving Lisa and Jessica a tour of the manor. Perhaps in the future, Lisa may consider looking into owning a place like this with Miguel. Once she gets a couple hundred more paychecks under her belt, she'll refuse to let Miguel cover the whole thing, as he has done in the past. 

As the sun began to go down, the spider-gang had an early dinner and the food was fantastic. Aunt May, MJ, and Gwen outdid themselves with the main course, and everyone brought with them their own little appetizer, a little piece of their home cuisine to make it complete. Bellies full, the gang was left to their own devices as they each began to break off and do their own things. 

Miles was eager to learn how to make christmas cookies so he set off to the kitchen to work on a recipe his mom loaned him. Hobie and Pav went outside to have a snowball fight while Jessica, Aunt May, and MJ relaxed with some tea in the dining room.  

Everyone else was decorating other parts of the house and really getting into the holiday spirit. Gwen notices Lisa hanging out by the window nook in the living room, looking out at the snow. “Everything okay, Lisa?” 

“Yeah, I’m just worried about Miguel. The snow is picking up and he should have been here by now,” Lisa sulked. 

It had been almost all day and no word from him. His plane should have landed by now. In fact, it should have landed hours ago. 

“I’m sure he’ll turn up! If I know Miguel, he’s got a plan for any situation!” Gwen reassures her with a snarky grin. 

Suddenly Lisa’s phone rings. She quickly glances over at the caller ID, seeing the familiar name and selfie. Lisa smiles at the image as she picks up the device in her hand.  

“Speak of the devil and he shall appear!” Gwen declared with a show-woman's voice. 

“Oh shush!” Lisa shoves Gwen playfully before answering her phone.

Miguel reassured Lisa that he'd absolutely be there to spend the holiday with her and the spider-fam. So when Lisa answered the phone, sighing in relief when she heard his voice for the first time in a while, her heart dropped when she heard his explanation. There’s a problem. 

“Your flight got canceled?!” Lisa yelps. 

“All flights to and from New York are canceled. Looks like the blizzard down there is picking up steam,” Miguel groaned in disappointment.

“Oh, Miguel, that’s awful. Are you stranded at the airport?” Her worry begins to bubble up in her stomach. 

“My flight got rerouted to Cleveland to avoid the brunt of the storm. Thankfully I got a hotel nearby for the night, and I’m on the standby list for the next flight out to Buffalo,” he reassures her. 

“Great! When do you fly out?” Her eyes brightened with hopeful enthusiasm. 

“. . . 4;00am Christmas morning,” He answered after a brief hesitation.

“You’re kidding?” Lisa sounds absolutely heartbroken as she slouches in her seat. 

“I’m so sorry, mi amor, I knew you were really looking forward to us all being there together. I promise I’ll get there as soon as I can,” He tells her, his voice trying to soothe her. - my love 

“Well, I’d rather you get here safely than as a frozen icicle,” Lisa sighs, a sad smile on her face. “Or worse,” 

“Hey, I know something that will cheer you up,” Miguel said, sounding optimistic. “Did all my presents make it over there in time?” He asks. 

“Yeah, Aunt May said they came in yesterday. They’re all under the tree,” Lisa glanced over at the large Christmas tree, seeing the pile of presents. 

“Look for a long, rectangular one in red and blue wrapping paper with your name on it,” Miguel instructed and Lisa could hear the smirk in his voice as she began rummaging through the presents.

Lisa finds it, admiring the wrapping briefly. She opens it up to reveal a beautiful box. Pulling off the lid, Lisa peers inside to find a nutcracker! Beautifully crafted, coincidentally it’s uniform is the same colour palette as Miguel’s suit (cause of course it is). “Oh, Miguel, it’s beautiful!” 

“I know you said you were fond of the collection your dad had, so I thought. . . Why not keep the tradition going?” Miguel speaks through the phone. 

“I love it!! Thank you, Miguel,” Lisa nearly tears up as she admires the gift. 

“You’re welcome, mi Mona Lisa. I’ll call you if I hear anything about my flight, but until then, I promise I’ll be there tomorrow,” Miguel smiles over the phone. “Te amo mi amor,”  - I love you my love

“Te amo guapo,” They hang up the phone and Lisa holds up the nutcracker, admiring it in the light. - I love you handsome 

Lisa sets the nutcracker down on the table. With a pep in her step, she sets out to join Gwen and the others in decorating. She was helping them wrap tinsel around the handle rail of the staircase when suddenly a loud scream came from the kitchen. 

“AAAHHHHH!” 

“Miles?!” Gwen and Lisa run over to check on him, only to find the poor boy is covered in flour, and cookie dough.

“Help!” He whimpered, coughing out flour from his mouth. 

“What on Earth happened here?” Aunt May looks flabbergasted as she jogs into the kitchen from the dinning room. 

The girls help Miles clean up, brushing the flour off his head and taking his hoodie off. But not before Hobie and Pav snag a quick picture. Miles calls them out on it as May gently wipes his face with a washcloth and Miles looks good as new in no time. 

Pav takes lots of pictures and sends them to Miguel to keep him updated on the night’s festivities. He thought he’d appreciate Miles messing up the cookie batter. Peter B. laughs along with him, but can’t help but feel sorry for his student. 

After the cookies are finally done and baking in the oven, Lisa was walking by the living room when she hears something fall and crack, followed by a whimper. “Oh no!”

She and the Spiders rush in to see little Mayday was playing with her toys. Peter B. must have dropped her off here after hearing Miles scream for help. But it looked like while he was gone, MayDay wanted something extra to play with and accidentally broke the arm of the Nutcracker.

“Oh, MayDay, what happened?” Peter B. scoops her up in his arms, the baby clearly upset about what happened. 

“Swoo-worry,” MayDay looks at Lisa with sad puppy dog eyes.

“Oh, MayDay,” Lisa’s heart aches at the look on her face as she takes the nutcracker in her hands. “. . . You’re not hurt, that’s what matters,” 

“Aww, I’m sorry Lis’, I still feel awful,” Peter B. offers her a sympathetic look. “I have a family friend who’s really good at tinkering and fixing up toys like that. I’ll give him a call tomorrow,” 

“But it’s Christmas,” Lisa gives him a skeptical look. “Nobody is open during the holiday,”

“Tell that to the old geezer that never sleeps,” Peter B. snorted. 

Peter B. leaves to put MayDay to bed for the night, hoping it would calm her down. As the evening progresses, Lisa struggles to figure out a way to keep the broken arm steady, terrified that it will fall off completely. She doesn’t want to call Miguel to tell him what happened, not wanting to upset him. 

“Here, try this,” Miles hands her a small piece of ribbon before she carefully ties it around like he’s wearing an arm cast. 

To her relief, it stays on and keeps the arm elevated! 

“Miles, you’re a life savor, thank you!” Lisa sighs in relief as she gives the boy a hug. 

“Hey, don’t mention it! You helped me out, it was the least I could do,” he offered her a soft smile.

Before long, everyone is winding down for the night, heading to go to sleep in their rooms. All except for Lisa. Lisa can’t bring herself to go to bed and stays in the living room on the window nook, looking out into the front yard, eyes on the driveway. 

She glances over, smiling down at the nutcracker with his makeshift arm cast. Footsteps approach as she looks over to see Aunt May bringing her a blanket and pillow. “I had a feeling you wouldn’t be convinced to move somewhere more comfortable?”

“I guess. . . I was hoping Santa had some magic left tonight?” Lisa shrugs. 

“He’ll show, one way or another. He’ll be even happier to see you knowing you got some rest tonight,” Aunt May gave her a knowing look. 

“For all you know I could be on Santa look out duty, you saw how excited Pav was,” Lisa smirked.

“Get some rest, Lisa,” Aunt May insisted with a kind smile as she handed her the blanket and pillow. “I have a feeling you’ll need it for tomorrow,” 

Lisa is curious but doesn’t dwell too long on what she meant as she watches May leave, turning off the lights. The fire is still kindling as Lisa smuggles up, holding the nutcracker close. She snaps a picture, sending it to Miguel. 'Thinking of you. See you tomorrow <;3'

Putting her phone away, Lisa falls fast asleep. There’s a glint in the nutcracker's eye, like a star flashing in the night sky.

Meanwhile at the Cleveland airport, Miguel is handed his stand by ticket for the following morning and the flight attendant gives him directions for the entrance to the hotel. As he’s walking through the large, bustling hallways, he reaches into his bag, double checking on the one gift for Lisa he didn’t send with the other presents that he wants to give her himself.

Happy Holidays!

A bit over a week ago, I downloaded the first few episodes (22, specifically, which is too many) of four different long-running podcasts, thinking I’d listen to one episode of each and then write a post about the pros and cons of dedicating many hours of my life to that one. Then I’d maybe try a few more episodes of one of another depending which ones I’d liked best, and eventually make one of them the next long-running thing I do. I took a screenshot to show which ones I had:

This worked initially, as I listened to s01e01 of Pappy’s Fun Club and wrote a post about it. But then I listened to the pilot of Do the Right Thing and honestly, I didn’t love it. But, I figured, that’s not fair. I’ve heard the pilot of Pappy’s too, and that’s cool and historically interesting, but it’s not necessarily the highest quality of comedy. You can’t judge a show purely from its pilot.

Also, I went into s01e01 (the post-pilot episode) of Pappy’s having already heard a few recent episodes, so I ad some context. And everything’s better when you already have context. When you can just enjoy the comedy instead of also trying to figure out who the people are and what the rounds/rules are and what the energy is like. So even if I just went to the first post-pilot episode of Do the Right Thing, it wouldn’t be fair to compare that to Pappy’s. I’d need to listen to a few to get a fair comparison, to know how it sounds once you’re used to the context.

So I did listen to a few, but then I ran into a week that I had to spend moving out of two separate houses while buying new electronics and working fulltime and it was stressful as fuck, so I didn’t have the chance to sit down and write a post about it. But this also meant I didn’t want to start a new thing, having not gotten to write a post about this one. Also, I just didn’t have the mental energy to try to get used to one more new thing at the same time as everything else that week, and thought I’d just stick with what I was already doing.

So that is how I’ve now listened to the first 33 episodes of Do the Right Thing, and there are only 18 left, so at this point I’m just going to finish the whole podcast before I move on to something else. It really doesn’t belong on a list of other very long-running podcasts, as getting into John + Elis stuff would take the rest of my life, but Do the Right Thing I can do in a few weeks.

So here’s that belated post on what I think about this podcast. It definitely got better after the pilot, though not by a lot immediately. It took a little while to find its feet, I think I was right to say I needed to give it a few episodes before judging it. It probably didn’t help that the early episodes had a lot of guests who weren’t familiar to me, some of whom also weren’t comedians. There were a bunch of musicians in there, as there’s crossover between Danielle Ward’s people and music people, since she used to be in bands. I also noticed a slightly higher-than-average proportion of those comedians who seemed fine at the time but now do Comedy Unleashed – which I think is related to it being the early days of a not-yet successful podcast, so they were bringing comedians who were insufficiently successful to turn that down, and who have since decided to give up on mainstream success and try competing in the smaller market for terrible people.

But the guests got better as the podcast got more successful, and drew people who were higher-status within comedy in general, but also more comedians that I specifically like. Coming up now, as I’m listening, I have a bunch of episodes in a row where there’s not a single one for which I’m not really excited for both guests: Andy Zaltzman/Lou Sanders, Sara Pascoe/John Robins (in fairly late 2016, and I do recall the trainwreck that was their Mock the Week episode, so that’s fun), Cariad Lloyd/Phil Wang, Sarah Kendall/Chris Addison, Jessica Fostekew/Nish Kumar, Sarah Millican/Joe Lycett.

And, as it went along, the regulars really found their feet in how they worked with each other and with the format. At first I wasn’t sure about it because they seemed to be trying too hard to appeal to too many things at once, and there was a lot of “It’s funny because I said sex” humour. Also a whole lot of awkwardly shoehorning in stand-up bits, which I normally don't mind much as that's expected on panel shows, but it was so excessive that it sort of replaced genuine interaction. They seemed to be trying to force both the humour and the chemistry in the earliest few episodes. But it got a lot better once they relaxed and started going with what seems more like their actual senses of humour and actual chemistry, which clearly is there as they’ve known each other a long time.

Danielle Ward is really brilliant. I’d already liked her, as I’d heard her on a few other things, and I saw her 2017 stand-up special Seventeen, which everyone should watch, it was so good. I’d always seen just enough of her to want to see more, which is why I put this podcast on my list in the first place (also because of Michael Legge, whose audiobook/Halloween EP/two stand-up specials on NextUp are some of my favourite things I’ve discovered this year). But I didn’t really know just how great she is until I got into this podcast. I could write a whole other post about how great Danielle Ward is. I will, at some point soon, write a whole other post about how great Danielle Ward is.

I have to admit I went in mildly biased against Margaret Cabourn-Smith, entirely because she mildly annoyed me on the Taskmaster podcast one time. She’s less of someone whom I immediately connect with as “my sense of humour”, so it took a bit longer with her (also because of the bias), but once I got used to her I’ve come around to really liking her as well. I think she’s also relaxed as the episodes have gone on, making better use of the fact that dirty jokes sound funnier coming from someone with her sort of nice person persona, and I’ve ended up quite enjoying it.

Like I said, I’ve got lots more to write about this podcast and will in other posts, but wanted to write this one to say, I really really am bad at trying to just sample multiple things instead of getting fully into one thing. After I finish this one, I will go back to just trying out the other three.
