I saw someone say Arthur was "just Uther but nicer".

Respectfully... no?? Uther made a choice and made everyone suffer for it constantly. Arthur was brainwashed into a certain belief system and had the weight of the world put on his shoulders from a young age.

He was open-minded. He was so open-minded it HURTS because every time he tried to understand those who were different it was twisted and warped and his heart became even more hardened. There were SO MANY times he was trying to understand.

His apology to the Druids, his saving Mordred, his listening to Merlin in disguise when they were trying to save Uther, his anger at Uther for lying and using magic and then tormenting magical people, his willingness to change the law for one of his knights...

OVER and OVER and OVER again he tries.

And every. single. time. it is twisted.

Arthur has problems. He's not perfect.

But he is NOT Uther.

It’s the way Arthur never knew his mother, or what she even looked like because Uther definitely seemed like the type to keep it all hidden. He doesn’t know her smile, or the sound of her laughter; the color of her hair, or the kindness in her eyes.

And he looks just like her.

this is definitely not healthy but i feel sadness for arthur. like, so much genuine sadness because it was like he was born to die.

he was never meant to be born. ygraine was not able to have a child, but uther demanded an heir by any means. the boundaries of magic were crossed and arthur was born, but then ygraine’s life was sacrificed.

i can only imagine the burden arthur felt growing up, knowing that his mother passed away giving birth to him. there’s never a word uttered about her; he has no clue if he has her smile or personality. he spends his days with the lingering thought in his head that maybe his father wished he’d never been born, just so ygraine would still be alive. arthur probably began to feel that way eventually.

but there’s nothing he can do to change the past, so we see arthur do everything to make uther proud. yet, somehow, that isn’t enough, despite arthur being the one to go out and fight monsters and magic users while other sits comfortably in his throne and preaching his anti-magic rhetoric.

eventually, arthur is crowned king and learns to rule with his heart rather than with vengeance. then uther’s ghost returns, telling him that he’d failed. arthur was destroying camelot.

“you’ve had your turn… it’s mine now,” is what arthur says before blowing on the horn of cathbhadh, watching his father dissipate into thin air. finally, he doesn’t have to face the burden of his father watching his every move with disapproval.

but then arthur dies. after the constant betrayals from the people he loved and the self-doubt, he dies.

yknow a take on morgana pendragon's story i see often is that if merlin had told morgana about his magic in that moment where they were in his chambers alone that she wouldn't have turned to become evil,, i disagree,, i think that morgana as a character would have eventually turned to become evil and bitter even with merlin as a mentor if she'd learned his secret early in season 2.

let's not forget merlin himself is NOT the most stable of mentor options (not that gaius or kilgahrah or ANY of the druids were a great help either) but he didn't know what the fuck he was doing,, just trying his best consulting that outdated spell book and had cryptic messages from a conniving dragon who MIND YOU still wanted morgana dead and was manipulating merlin the whole time and gaius was a traitor to most magic people like,, he literally was pro-gaslight morgana

merlin also loved arthur, however you view that love (romantic, platonic, brotherly, whatever) merlin loved arthur more than he did magic. we see this multiple times with merlin choosing what kept arthur safe and happy over him doing what would be best for the old religion (fuck them too but that's another post),, major example being the episode with the disir where he straight up tells him there is no place for magic in camelot (which is crazy considering he IS magic made flesh but anyways)

morgana HATED. uther, she hated everything about him and for awhile she disgusted that hate as righteous fury, raining down terror and pain onto innocents (even other magic users) and justifying it as payback. she hated arthur as an extension of uther because that's what uther raised them both as (again another post for another time) and tried to kill him without even asking what his stance was on magic (i believe arthur would have immediately done some introspection and realized he was wrong but thats imo)

i think that eventually,, their two stances would have come to blows (merlin's love for arthur above his magic/morgana's hatred for uther above all else) and morgana would still go to immeasurable heights to murder uther once more, merlin would have stopped her (or tried) because he knew the pain it would cause arthur even if he hated uther too, and morgana would've hated merlin for getting in her way,, her anger triumphing her love for arthur (see: s1ep12: to kill the king)

i feel like often times i just see morgana painted as someone who just needed a little love and light,, when in reality she's been heavily abused and pit against arthur since she was like 10/11 (however old she came to Camelot) and is now a grown woman who is realizing she hates her abuser and everything he's done and wants to destroy him and everything he loves !!

likewise merlin was manipulated and gaslit and forced to become a compulsive liar and would've NOT !! been good for morgana and eventually everything would've gone to shit !!

A personal pet peeve of mine is the take that Arthur’s mistake in 5x05 was trusting Merlin over his own better judgment, meanwhile Merlin was acting purely out of a desire to protect Arthur (as his friend) at the cost of any chance at magic going free.

Like, first of all, Arthur’s ‘better judgment’ was not telling him that magic should be free. That whole speech leading up to him asking Merlin what he should do was all about the harm magic has done and how it’s taken everything from him, and then at the end he tacks on “but idk maybe it’s not pure evil”. It’s a somewhat weak (from his perspective) rationalization for saving Mordred at the cost of “magic reigning in Camelot once again” - something he fears.

Could Merlin have convinced Arthur to accept the Disir’s deal? Maybe, maybe not. We’ve seen throughout the show- and even just in this episode- that Arthur takes Merlin’s advice to heart sometimes but also often dismisses it out of hand, or hears him out but still ultimately disagrees. Which is fine and normal, but it means that just saying “Merlin should have convinced him” ignores Arthur’s agency in making the decision.

I think it’s noteworthy that Merlin spends the majority of the episode before that point trying to get Arthur to take the Old Religion seriously. He warns him not to bring weapons into a sacred space. He points out that Osgar- a sorcerer- absolutely could have killed Arthur but chose not to. He smiles for the first time in three days when Arthur asks if he should take the Disir seriously and Merlin replies that he already is.

And speaking of Merlin’s goals: Obviously, his treatment of Mordred throughout this season is both deeply unfair and highly counterproductive; I’m not arguing that point. But I simply don’t understand the reading that it’s driven solely by his love for Arthur (whether romantic or platonic) and not at all his faith in their shared destiny. Because I don’t think that his feelings towards Arthur are extricable from Arthur’s prophesied role in bringing about the Golden Age and returning magic to the land.

I understand that “magic has no place in Camelot” is a very hard-line statement — one that undoubtedly sets back the pro-magic agenda. He didn’t have to do all that. But I still don’t necessarily believe this signals him “giving up” on ending magical oppression in the long term. He’s banking on the sequence of events the prophecies have supposedly laid out: [1] keep Arthur alive (by removing perceived threats), [2] show him tangible evidence that magic can be used for good (see: Dragoon, the Dolma, etc.), [3] Albion!!

Arguably the most significant part of that plan is that Arthur genuinely comes to believe in magic’s potential for good. Which is not what would be happening if he was forced to legalize it for Mordred’s sake. Doing it that way would provide very little security for magic users because [a] it could easily be undone (especially if Mordred did end up killing Arthur) and [b] it means Arthur would have very little incentive to actually enforce any new laws protecting sorcerers.

So, yeah, Merlin is a dick to Mordred. He loses out on chances to connect outside of a very few rare moments and repeatedly leaves him to fend for himself in dangerous situations. I hate that; I wish it didn’t have to be that way, even though it makes sense that the deeply traumatized and paranoid Merlin we see in S5 is making these calls.

But Merlin is not selfishly and single-handedly responsible for throwing away the lives of all his fellow oppressed magic-users out of blind love for Arthur Pendragon. He’s not innocent, and he’s certainly not without flaws, but he’s not That either.

As if to challenge me on that last point, they had Shrek sing an off-key rendition of "You've Got a Friend," which was delightful

Donkey looks particularly off in this movie and I've just realized it's because of the texture of his fur. It was smooth and growing in a similar direction for three movies, and now it's super coarse and messy

I love that the way they keep Dragon at bay is both a callback to the first movie and a callback to the phrase Fiona has tied knots with throughout the movie. A rare moment of good writing it in this funny little movie

More Merlin facts!

This is what her face truly looks like. She informed Vortigern that she intended to go with Uther and this was the result. He cut off her hair and killed her, and even if as a dream-like existence she can easily come back, the scar made by his necromancy will never heal. She normally uses a small illusion on her face to cover it up.

Speaking of Vortigern, she served him approximately since her early teens to 26 years old, more than half of her life back then. Originally he ordered to serve him, but she stayed by her own choice since she didn't have anything else.

She often babysitted baby Kay and young Lot while Ector and Emrys were busy. She had a great time playing with Kay, and she was a terrible influence on Lot always telling him to flick his vegetables. She also helped train him on the use of the spear along Vortigern and Emrys. Since she's able to copy every action she sees that kind of thing comes naturally to her.

Her happier days were during her early twenties when Emrys was alive. He became the one person she could call her friend, even if it took her after his death to realize. To this day he haunts her, evident in the dandelions (the nickname he gave her) that bloom after her and the other kinds of flowers her magic sprouts: forget-me-not's, roses, heather, and hyacinths; his favorites.

She taught both Vortigern and Uther necromancy, although the former didn't want anything from her, so she was limited on her teachings. Uther though, she was able to teach freely and took great joy on it. She also taught Arthur, but only divination magic and botanic knowledge since he had no gift nor disposition for necromancy, much to her disappointment. Then again, she was used to him disappointing her.

She had a great time serving Uther, the best of her life probably. She taught him so many things, about magic, about the faeries, about whatever he wanted, and in return he listened to her, took her advice, allowed her to teach him and employed her freely as he saw fit; it was the dream arrangement for her. To her, to this day there hasn't been a better King than Uther Pendragon. The few times he killed her? Well, no one's perfect.

Thus, it's not surprising that her relationship with Arthur was terrible, almost reaching hostile. Equally, there were a few knights of the round table that might not have trusted her at all. Yet, no one could deny the pros of having her on their side outweighed the cons.

reiterating this poll is for fun, and while I’ll try to keep it organized, I am not going out of my way to make a tumblr poll bracket I’m doing in my free time 100% bias-free or 100% optimized.

I feel like this should go without saying but I do ascribe to the idea that some ships are inherently morally bad and deserve to be hated. I won’t post about all my opinions on the ships, but if a ship is predatory/offensive/has bigoted shippers I will join in calling it really bad, and I will not be accepting or starting anti/pro-shipper discourse here. it’s 2023, grow up and stop shipping incest.

rankings was done via a combination of counting the number of submissions and balancing fandom/ship popularity and/or exposure. ship names for the bracket image were found via websearching, I did my best to find accurate or relevant ship names for all of them when applicable.

Camelot

A quick summary since many don't seem to know this show or did not watch it yet.

Pros:

Cast with well known actors that were not famous in 2011. Like Jamie Campbell Bower as Arthur, Joseph Finess as Merlin, Clive Standen as Gawain, James Purefoy as King Lot and Eva Green as Morgan.

The costumes are beautiful. Especially Morgans.

The fight scenes are good, from the knights especially gawain stands out. Also arthur has an adoptive brother named kay.

The plot circles loose around the well known story of arthur but morgan plays a much bigger role than in the saga and is the main antagonist.

Big Spoiler ahead:

Morgan comes back from exile and asks her father uther to welcome her back as his heir which he refuses, so she kills him.

She establishes an alliance with king lot and then finds out she has an halfbrother: arthur. Merlin is determined to make him king over her. After lot kills arthurs adoptive parents he is killed by arthur and his knights. Arthur meets guinevere and falls in love but she marries another leontes (one of arthurs knights). Morgan tries to get the love of the people and wins more followers. Merlin brings arthur a sword from a famous smith named excalibur (the same name of the daughter of the smith who tries to take it away after merlin killed her father and dies in a lake that merlin freezes but cant control it, so she drowns. Making her lady of the lake). Morgan invites arthur and his knights in her castle, then she swaps faces with igraine to stir mistrust among the citizens of camelot, while igraine is her captive in pendragon. She then lures arthur in a trap that nearly gets him killed, instead leontes, guineveres husband dies. When she receives false news of his death she kills igraine who she holds a grudge against for replacing her mother. (Swap from the original tale were igraine is morgans and arthurs mother, here they share uther as father). She is about to be crowned as arthur comes back. He disownes her and kills her nun who was her advisor. She is left alone in her castle. Later at night guinevere comes to arthur and asks him to sleep with her. She later wakes up beside him and leaves. Outside of is chambers you see it's actually morgan who slept with her brother. And that's the end of it.

Cons:

A lot of sex scenes and nudity, mostly the woman. Like seriously it's more than game of thrones had in one season. Three scenes are non consensual because one is rape and in the others merlin thinks he is with igraine while its morgan and the same goes for arthur and guinevere.

Merlin does no magic because it's bad and uncontrollably. One of the weakest points of the story really. Morgan uses a lot of magic but it's mostly just face swapping.

I hope this summary helps a little with the decision if to watch it or not.
