a/n: this series is inspired by the movie wild child but set in the outer banks world. expect drama, rivalry, tension, and a whole lot of chaos. enjoy. ♡

wild child : episode 1

the sun beat down on the tarmac as the private jet touched down on the outer banks runway, its smooth landing barely jostling y/n in her seat. she exhaled slowly, tilting her head back against the plush leather, her oversized designer sunglasses slipping slightly down her nose. she didn’t push them up. she didn’t care.

she had spent the entire flight in silence, staring out the window, watching as the deep blues of the ocean blurred beneath her. the further she got from home—miami, her real home—the more suffocated she felt.

silverstone school for excellence. even the name made her stomach turn.

she hadn’t wanted to come here. no, she had fought, argued, thrown a fit, threatened to run away, but none of it mattered. her father had already made up his mind, and when charles alastair made a decision, there was no changing it.

"you need discipline, y/n."

"you need to learn some responsibility."

"silverstone will set you straight."

but she knew what he really meant.

"i’m tired of dealing with you."

y/n scoffed under her breath, gripping the armrest tighter as the flight attendant opened the door, letting in a rush of humid air that wrapped around her instantly. it was thick, suffocating, like the very air of this place was pressing against her chest. she already hated it here.

she adjusted her sunglasses and sighed, pulling herself together before standing up. her outfit—a soft pastel pink lulu set—was pristine, perfectly coordinated, and entirely impractical for the sticky heat outside. but she didn’t care. she looked good. and if she had to be exiled to some uptight institution in the middle of nowhere, she would at least do it in style.

as she stepped onto the stairs leading down from the jet, her pristine white sneakers made barely a sound. she moved slowly, deliberately, taking her time because, really, what was the rush?

below, a sleek black car waited on the runway. a driver in a sharp suit stood by, holding the door open, but y/n didn’t acknowledge him as she slid inside.

the moment the door shut, she pulled her phone from her bag, unlocking it to check her messages. the group chat was already blowing up.

blair: babe, how’s boarding school? are they making you milk cows yet?

camilla: probably locked in a tower. like rapunzel. but richer.

luna: y/n, i swear, if you disappear off the face of the earth, i will fly there myself and rescue you.

y/n smirked, fingers flying over the keyboard.

y/n: if you don’t hear from me in a week, assume i’m dead.

the car pulled forward, leaving the airstrip behind, and she finally looked up, taking in her new reality.

silverstone was a nightmare wrapped in ivy-covered walls and old money tradition. it was the kind of place where every hallway smelled like freshly polished wood, where students wore beige skirts and navy blazers, where rules weren’t meant to be broken. and worst of all? it was suffocating.

no parties. no freedom. no boys.

her father had sent her here to “fix” her, to mold her into the perfect daughter, to erase the headlines she had made over the years.

the yacht incident in miami. the unauthorized trip to ibiza. the credit card bill that could have funded a small country.

it wasn’t like she had meant to push him this far. but maybe a part of her wanted to. maybe a part of her wanted to see just how far she could go before he finally sent her away.

and now she had her answer.

the car pulled through the massive iron gates of silverstone, the school’s grand entrance looming ahead. the main building was made of gray stone, ivy crawling up its sides, towering windows reflecting the sunlight. everything about it screamed prestige, control, order.

y/n exhaled, forcing herself to stay calm as the car rolled to a stop.

a group of students stood nearby, chatting, laughing, all dressed in the regulation uniform. she could already feel their eyes on her as she stepped out. whispers started immediately.

"who is she?"

"new girl?"

"she doesn’t look like she belongs here."

y/n smirked, adjusting her sunglasses.

fine. if they wanted to judge her, she’d give them something to talk about.

with her designer tote slung over her shoulder and her chin lifted high, she walked up the stone steps of silverstone, ready to raise hell.

Vella's Closure Creates New Opportunities For This Horse Story

A long long time ago before I made a harder pivot to fantasy fiction, I wanted to dive into writing a young adult horse story. I began the first story in my Silverwood Academy series, Double Standards. My protagonist is the daughter of a senator who wants to be allowed to follow her dreams rather than be the poster child of a politican. Her free spirited nature gets her in trouble, and while I really enjoyed writing this story, I also felt a bit off about it. Why when it comes to writing a young adult horse story were we constantly telling the tales of rich people and the children of rich people? And yes, horses can be expensive (they also don't have to be). So I lost interest in the story. Then the Pegasus Academy happened. And while that series takes place from the point of view from the new director of the academy, I have written a few young adult horse stories that take place at the academy (such as Winter Unicorn, a free novella available here). The more I got into that world, the more I wanted to bring it into Silverwood Academy? After all, if the Musimagium is setting up regular academy-type schools for the Musimagium, then wouldn't it stand to reason that those who don't have magic, but are from magical families, would end up in non-magical academies like Silverwood. Following that thought, I pondered having a character show up who was *gasp* from a magical family, and of course Jilly's Senator Father wouldn't want his daughter to have anything to do with someone from a magical family, even if they didn't have magic themselves. It'd be a good foil for Jilly's free spirited nature and her sense of justice and fairness that I set up early in the story, not to mention a possible romantic connection down the road. Though looking at my schedule I'm not sure when I'd get a chance to write this story, but now, I have a chance. I wasn't sure about bringing magic into a very mundane story before. Now? This could be the kind of introduction to my young adult world that I need. It's something to think about. We'll see what the future brings for this story. I so do hate to leave things unfinished.
