Master Post
Lost looking for something on this blog? This post is for you!
Months listed next to each show/movie/etc. below are those in which they can be found and usually were reblogged a lot.
I don’t regularly reblog all the shows I watch. I usually do “catch-up” reblogs for many of my shows, so expect occasional mass reblogs (especially at the beginning of a new month).
This post is here to give you an idea of where to search for gifs and photos, etc. of a particular subject on my blog. I’m usually pretty good with tagging everything, but in some cases it may be easier to go through the posts by month instead of by the tags.
It’s also my personal guide to what to reblog in the future, so this post will be updated or reposted whenever I’ve had a lot of activity or it’s a new month.

"Please don't tell me you're going to order the milkshake, Y/N." Sam rested his head on his arm, watching me as I grinned widely.
"Of course I am. That's the best part about this diner." I placed the menu down and sighed, "Especially after Stiles ditched me today, I kind of need it."
Dean grunted, "Whatever. You act like you didn't just see him."
"For your information, I haven't seen him in over a week."
"Boo-hoo."
Sam nudged Dean on his arm, "Give her a break dude. A week is a pretty long time, we solved two cases since."
"Well if you're such a sob, why don't you surprise him and drop by?" Dean let out a suggestion, which really wasn't a bad idea.
Except for the fact that I didn't know what he was doing. I don't want to visit him unexpectedly and see Stiles freaking out for some reason.
Seeing the worried expression on my face, Sam let out a breath. "Don't think too much into it. If he ditches you again or doesn't try to text you, just start asking questions."
"Haha, make him squirm. I love that." Dean laughed.
I starred at my oldest brother and rolled my eyes. It pissed me off that Dean always joked around with my misery. Scooting off the booth, I got out of my seat. "I'm going to go order my milkshake now."
Sam and Dean started bickering from behind as they fought about me and my attitude. Ignoring them, I continued to walk towards the counter.
As I was waiting by the counter, I noticed a wallet sitting there unintended. It was familiar but I didn't think too deep into it. The waitress that was behind the counter smiled as I handed the wallet.
She flipped the wallet, looking inside to identify the person by their ID. "Mi.. Miec... Stilinski... Wow the first name i-"
"Wait, can I see the ID please? I think I know the person." I kindly asked, hoping that she would show me the card.
As she flashed the ID at me, I immediately knew who it belonged to. It wasn't like I didn't know it was Stiles' the moment the waitress tried to pronounce his name. I just had to make sure it was really his drivers license.
"Seems like you know him... The look in your face says so. Are you alright?" The waitress was really friendly, which was why I loved this diner.
"Uhh yeah. A close friend of mine, actually. Mind if I give it to him?" It probably came off as sketchy but this could be an excuse to go see him, as pathetic as that sounded.
"I trust you, go ahead." She smiled as she wiped off the counter. "Worse case, Stilinski comes back and I remember your face."
A giggle escaped my mouth, the waitress laughing with me also. "You're right. Thank you."
Gripping the wallet tightly, I sat back down to the booth next to Sam.
"So chocolate? Cookie and Cream? Vanilla?"
"Huh?" I questioned Sam, looking puzzled as I starred at the wallet. Nothing really made sense to why my boyfriend's wallet was here.
Maybe I was thinking too much of it; Was he here by himself? Perhaps with a girl? Stiles knew this diner was my favorite place to eat at. I sounded like a crazy girlfriend but there was nothing but doubt on my mind.
"Stop doing that overthinking crap, don't worry." Dean said before taking a huge bite off of his burger.
Opening the wallet once again, I starred at Stiles' picture on his license. He was too sweet to mess around with other girls, I knew that much. Or did I?
I checked the pockets to see if I can find anything; There was just a condom, some cash and few receipts. Picking up the first receipts that was crumpled up between ten dollar bills, I read it to see if there was perhaps any clues.
"I'll be in the car." My heart dropped as I re-crumpled the receipt back into Stiles' wallet and stormed out the door.
Sam followed me outside. "Y/N, Y/N!"
"Stiles was here this morning!" I started crying, I honestly was exhausted from having him in my mind all the time. "He was just here..."
"Okay, okay. Let's go home okay? We'll talk about it at home."
----
"That fucking prick!" Dean slammed the front door as we got into the house. "Call him here, now!"
Sam walked over to Dean, "Hey calm down. We don't know anything yet. The only thing we know for sure is that he was at the diner."
"You better punch him in the face or I will, Y/N." Dean huffed, pacing back and forth.
"He's on his way..." I mumbled, turning off my phone as I checked my text from Stiles. "... After I told him it's an emergency."
Dean shook his head, "I'm fuming. Funny how now he wants to show up."
"I'm glad you're mad at him for me, Dean but I need to do this on my own okay?"
He nodded, his face clearly stated that he was beyond pissed. I looked at both my brothers, "I'll be upstairs in my room."
The sound of footsteps followed me from behind but I heard it stop as Sam mumbled something under his breath. I suppose Dean tried to come with me, which was refreshing because that meant my brothers were really looking out for me.
Sitting on my bed for about five minutes, I heard a knock on my door. Stiles came in with a nervous look on his face, "Long time no see."
"And who is it to blame?" I didn't bring him here to be petty, it was just that all my anger and confusing had me going crazy.
"I'm sorry, Y/N." Stiles closed the door behind him and approached the bed. "I've been busy."
"You were so busy you forgot your wallet." I smiled sarcastically, lightly throwing his wallet towards his chest as he caught it. "Guess where I found it?"
Stiles put his wallet away into his pocket, sighing. "The last place I remember seeing it was at the diner."
Curling my lips, I starred at him. I didn't know what else to say anymore. I was scared of what his answer was going to be if I asked him.
"You ditched me today to go to a diner, with who?"
"I went by myself."
That was a lie. "Do you want to try again?"
"Y/N, I was by myself."
"You have a receipt in your wallet and you ordered food and drinks for two people!" My tone was louder and much angrier. "If you're lying about going to the fucking diner by yourself, I can assume that you were with some girl."
Stiles stood still, he was emotionless. His mouth was opened, figuring out what he should say to somewhat make me feel better.
“So am I right?” I shouted at him, dying to know the answer at this point. It was frustrating seeing him freeze, I knew he was guilty.
“I don’t know what to say...” Stiles murmured.
Tears immediately flooded down my face as he confirmed my assumptions. Everything was true, I wasn’t being paranoid. This time however, I wish I wasn’t right because my heart felt like it was crushed into billions of pieces.
“What about an apology for starters? You don’t even have an excuse to defend yourself?!” I shoved him, having mixed feelings between anger and sadness.
“Y/N, I am sorry and I don’t have an excuse for any of this. What I did was wrong, I’m truly sorry.”
“Why did you keep this from me?”
Dean and Sam rushed into my room, they must of heard banging from when I pushed Stiles. Being occupied, I honestly didn’t think it was loud at all.
“You can show yourself out.” Sam spoke in a deep voice as he pointed towards the door. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so furious like this before.
“Not so fast, buddy.” Dean pulled Stiles in, grabbing him by his collar. He swung his arm behind and landed his fist into Stiles’ cheek.
“Dean!” I screamed, kneeling down next to Stiles after he fell to the floor.
The oldest brother huffed, “What you’re defending this asshole?”
“Of course not! Dean, I told you I’m taking care of this myself.” After helping Stiles off of the floor, I pulled him downstairs all the way to my front door.
“Thanks.” Stiles sighed. “Your brother would’ve killed me.”
“As much as I want that, I know for sure he would kill you and I can’t have Dean in prison forever.” I bit my lips and looked at him. There was already a bruise forming on his left cheek, I hate that I still cared that he was hurt. “Make sure you ice that, I’m sure your new girlfriend will be glad to help you.”
Stiles shook his head, “Can we talk about this? It was a mistake and I love you. Y/N, I want you and not her.”
“Goodbye, Stiles.” Seeing his sad and beat up face made it hard to close the door on him but it had to be done. As I locked the door, the tears continued to stream down.
“Y/N.” I heard Sam’s soft voice from behind. Quickly turning around, I jumped onto him and started to cry into his chest.
“I’m so sorry, kiddo.” He stroked my head, hugging me tightly.
Dean walked from behind Sam, “Hey, I didn’t mean to punch Stiles. It was just a reaction and I know you said you wanted to do it on your own bu-”
“No, thank you for being there for me. I’ll always need you even if I deny it sometimes.” I reached my arm, inviting Dean into the hug. “Besides, he deserved it.”
“I’ll always be there for you, champ.” Dean squeezed me tightly. “And honestly, we’re the only men that should be in your life.”
“Uh-huh.” I looked at both my brothers and smiled.

Fic Writer Interview
I got tagged by the excellent @astriiformes Ages ago to do this fic writer interview thing, and I’m finally getting around it! So here goes...
Name:
Mairi (sounds like 'marry'), Kamemor over on AO3 (after a particularly cool Romulan politician in a Star Trek novel, if you were wondering)
Fandoms:
Currently, I'm writing a lot of RWBY fic and that's unlikely to change because I'm deep in Special Interest Hell with no signs of coming up for air. In the past, I've also written a bunch of stuff for Criminal Minds and The Flash/DCTV. I've got a lot of other fandoms, but those are the main ones I've written for.
Two-shot:
Assuming this is asking if I've ever written one, technically no. But I do have a series (Just Hold On, a RWBY fix-it) that currently consists of two fics which could stand alone as they are, although I have plans to continue that one for quite a few more fics if I can find the motivation and time. And I guess I also have a couple of fics that I could have split into two chapters because they switch from one POV to another about halfway through. I like to stick to third person limited POV, and that means I often have section breaks when I want to switch from one character's perspective to another's, and for a two-person scene that usually means two sections. But I like the oneshot structure, and usually I don't feel like what I'm writing is long enough to split into chapters.
Most popular multi-chapter:
I only have one true multi-chapter fic, and it's Moving Forward, a Flash fic based on the idea of Reverse Flash being taken prisoner at the end of s1 rather than being wiped from existence. It's technically still unfinished, but I got a lot of lovely comments on that one a few years back when I was posting it, including a few folks that went through and commented on each chapter and really made my day. Maybe one day I'll actually finish it...
The only other thing I have that’s multi-chapter is a collection of missing scene ficlets, also Flash fic, but that doesn’t really count.
Actual worst part of writing:
My brain tends to be very visual when I'm writing fanfic for a TV show, and few things are as annoying as knowing exactly the facial expression someone is pulling and having No Idea how to describe it in words. Same with tones of voice. Also, I tend to jump straight into writing the bits of scenes that are most interesting to me, and going back and adding in the context that you need to make something actually readable for someone that isn't you can be a bit tiresome.
How you choose your titles:
It depends, tbh. A lot of my older fics are titled with short verb phrases that are pretty straightforward (like 'Moving Forward' or 'Breaking the Cycle'), but recently I've rather enjoyed using song lyrics. Most of my RWBY fics have lyric titles either from songs from the show itself or songs that I've got on my extensive Ironwood character playlist or otherwise just quite like and feel like they fit. I don't tend to find titles all that difficult, and I've got a fair few WIPs that have them already.
Do you outline:
Again, depends on the fic. With longer ones, yes, usually as a list of bullet points describing what happens. But shorter missing scene fics or things that I bashed out in only one or two sessions and only follow a single conversation tend not to be outlined because they just flow as I write them. I've got some more extensive outlines for a few of the fix-it AUs I've been playing with, but even then they're just bullet point lists or mostly held in my own head.
Ideas I probably won't get around to but wouldn't it be nice:
I have. So many. Most of them are RWBY fix-it fic, which is fun to write at the moment of divergence but then A Huge Endeavour to follow any further than that. I’ve planned out a bunch of different shapes for where the three different versions I’ve already written and posted would go, but there’s only one of them that I’m really continuing (aforementioned two fic series). Although I have a dilemma there, because the climax of the story arc that I figured out for that ‘verse would work even better in the other one that focuses more on Penny & Ironwood. But it’s not as simple as just throwing the idea into continuity with that one, because there’s a Major difference between the two in that in one of them, Qrow was the one who got through to Ironwood, and in the other they kinda hate each other over the whole ‘I blame you (and also me but mostly you) for Clover’s death’ thing, so I’d have to plot out a completely different relationship arc there which would have a knock-on impact on how well Ironwood is dealing with everything else. Canon divergence fic! it’s a good time.
I’ve also got So Much other RWBY fic in bits and pieces in various Google docs, it’s ridiculous. (Including a superhero AU that I’m rather fond of conceptually, but don’t really have a solid arc plot for.) A lot of it would be nice to get into a publishable state, but I probably won’t ever be bothered to.
On the not-RWBY front, I've also got a big Criminal Minds/Silent Witness crossover that I've planned out all the beats of, but actually writing it means coming up with the specific details of the murders and the autopsy scenes and a whole lot of technical stuff that I'm not comfortable just winging based on what I've seen on TV. But I also don't like researching real life crime stuff even though I love a good crime drama, so you see my dilemma. I like casefic in theory, but in practice I'm probably not going to write much of it.
Callouts @ me:
Just because you’re an insomniac who mostly writes fic at night rather than sleeping doesn’t mean that every conversation fic has to happen as a result of one or both characters being unable to sleep, my dude. There are Other circumstances in which people talk to each other.
Best writing traits:
I’m good at character voice, although that’s a pretty standard thing to be good at. I also really like unconventional crossovers, I’ve gotten pretty good at playing around with conversations between characters who never met or aren’t even from the same universe and coming up with a believable dynamic for them. I also like to think that I’m good at getting into the heads of awkward characters and figuring out which bits to poke at in order to get them to do things they didn’t do in canon. (And figuring out how they rationalised the things they did actually do.) That’s a big reason why I liked writing Reverse Flash, the complicated bastard, and it’s why I’m having so much fun with Ironwood now. You’ve really got to work at him to get him to change direction, great big stubborn disaster that he is, and I think I’ve rather gotten the hang of that.
Spicy tangential opinion:
People should write more longfic focused on gen relationships. Some of the most fascinating relationships in stories, at least to me, are the ones between people you’d never expect to be friends, or between adults and the kids they feel responsible for who also feel kinda responsible for them, and that makes for a (imho) much more interesting story than most ships. I Live for a good complicated mentor/mentee relationship, but I hate looking for fic about them because then I have to deal with the fact that a lot of people ship those relationships and it squicks me out. Give me the longfics about types of relationships I actually care about!
(This whole thing is a good 40% of the reason that I’ve ended up get absorbed in planning out a RWBY Vol8 re-write where the parallels and the newly complicated relationship between Ruby and Ironwood is The Main Agenda. (The other 60% of the reason being ‘[x character] deserved better’.) There’s some Really Good Stuff there and I want to play with it in more of a longform situation than my usual oneshots.)
No pressure tagging:
@squireofgeekdom , @catgirlalchemist , and anyone else who wants to give it a go! Feel free to say I tagged you :D

“Y/N, what are you doing?”
You whipped around, putting on the most innocent face you could muster as your eyes met Jaebum’s. “I was waiting for Jackson to finish getting his makeup done.”
He raised a brow. “Oh really? What’s that behind your back?”
“A wall?”
“Y/N.”
You pouted, showing him the tree frog you held. It had been enchanted, so it was glowing a faint pink.
“Do I want to know?”
“If he touched it, he would fall madly in love with it,” you grinned. “It would be YouTube gold!”
He sighed, facepalming. “You know you’re not supposed to use magic outside of battle.”
“Che, where’s the fun in that?” you scowled, allowing the frog to sit on your shoulder so you could fold your arms. “There hasn’t been a battle in months. I’m gonna get rusty!”
“You’re constantly using your powers, you’re not gonna get rusty,” he chuckled.
“I can neither confirm nor deny that.”
The door opened behind you and Jackson stepped out, wearing a suit. “How do I look?”
“Tame and average.”
“You little – ”
You dodged when Jackson tried to grab you, using Jaebum as a shield. “You’re far too slow to catch me!”
Jaebum could only sigh as Jackson chased you around the hall, trying and failing to grab you. When did he sign up to be a parent? More importantly, where could he unsign?
A burst of power suddenly struck you and you froze, your senses hyper-aware as you tried to hone into the source. You almost had it tracked down when Jackson tackled you to the ground, making you lose your connection.
“Dumbass!” you cursed at him, smacking his head. “Can’t you feel that?”
“Feel what?” he looked at you dumbly.
“Do you sense something?” Jaebum inquired.
You nodded. “It only lasted for a second, but I felt a burst of power. Someone strong is in the building and they are using their power for something.”
“Can you track it?”
“I tracked it to the east side of the building, but someone broke my concentration before I could get an exact location. I won’t be able to track it until they use their power again, but it feels like they are using a barrier technique to hide their aura.”
“Great,” Jaebum muttered. “Jackson, get to your photo shoot. Y/N, I’ll come with you.”
“No, I’ll go alone,” you stood up, offering him a smile. “No offense, but you’ll just get in the way.”
“Offense is taken, but understood. Be careful.”
“Careful is my middle name!”
Both boys scoffed, not believing that you could claim such a thing. You were one of the most reckless people they had ever met.
“Don’t worry, I got this.” With a thumbs-up, you took off for the east wing of the building, keeping your senses open for even the tiniest of magical spikes.
One thing you had learned early on during your training as a witch was to always listen to your instincts. As a witch, you were more in tune with the wavelengths of objects around you and the soul lengths of people. Even if this person was hiding their power, your instincts could still point you in the right direction.
You found yourself entering a large storage room, filled with old and broken equipment. The room was dark, dimly lit by a bulb that had seen better days. It was cold and everywhere you looked was metal. Why did this building have such a large room? You had no idea, but your gut was telling you that you needed to be there.
“Wh-What do you want from me?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I. Want. You.”
You followed the voices. A brown-haired boy was being pinned to the wall, fear in his eyes. A woman stood in front of him, holding his wrists in place. You could tell with one look that she was a witch and you recognized the magic sparkling on her lips as she leaned down to kiss him.
“Oi, don’t you know love magic is illegal?” you called out, stopping her before their lips could connect.
Her head whipped up, eyes flashing angrily. “Mind your own business,” she hissed, eyes turning red.
“When you’re making all this noise and breaking witch laws, it becomes my business.”
She laughed, releasing the boy to turn her attention to you. “You’re not an Archmage, what right do you have to enforce witch law?”
“I’m a witch hunter,” you grinned proudly. Your family had been witch hunters for generations, using their magic to uphold the law of their kind and keep the ignorance of normal humans intact. You were proud to take on the role, especially since you were the last of your family currently living. You didn’t want the bloodline to die with you. “Love magic is strictly forbidden. It’s time for you to be punished!” you held out your hand as your ring began to glow a bright red. The ring broke into particles, reforming into a short sword that fell into the palm of your hand.
“You’re a few centuries too early to beat me, kid,” she smirked, flipping her chocolate hair over her shoulder. “I’m giving you one last chance to run away.”
You hummed, pointing the blade at her. “I’m going to enjoy destroying you. Witches like you are my least favorite. I get that you can’t find love on your own, but tricking people into loving you is just sad.”
She growled out in anger, her hands glowing a light blue as ice started to form around her. She thrust her hands out and pillars of ice shot towards you.
You dodged, running between them as they sprung up out of the floor. There were several narrow misses, the sharp ice ripping your clothes. “Jinyoung just bought me this shirt, you bitch!” you cried out, slicing the blade through the pillar in front of you. The steel started to glow red as it heated up with your magic, flames bursting from it like a firework.
“Fire magic?” The woman scowled, slamming her palms onto the ground. The floor quickly became covered in ice and the temperature of the room started to drop.
“Jokes on you,” you dodged another pillar, slicing the one behind you. “I may have fire magic, but I friggin’ love the cold!”
“Shut up!”
True, you did love the cold, but trying to dodge murderous ice pillars on the slippery frozen ground was not as fun as one might think.
You focused your power into your foot before slamming it down. The ice shattered and fire rose from the cracks, melting the ice almost instantly. “Your heart seems pretty cold, let me warm it up!” you rushed forward, leaping over the wall of ice she made to shield herself. You landed behind her, stabbing the blade into her side. She cried out in pain, feeling the burn of your magic. Holding up your middle and index fingers, you said, “Seal!”
Chains materialized, wrapping tight around her until she couldn’t move. Her power had been sealed away temporarily. With her magic cut, the ice started to break apart, falling loudly to the ground before shattering into magical dust.
“Now I just have to call the magic council,” you sighed, raising your hand to the ball that dangled from your right ear. Movement from the corner of your eye made you look up. It was the boy, slowly backing away from you with wide eyes. He looked absolutely terrified. “Hey, wait -”
As soon as you spoke up, he took off like a bat out of hell. You looked between the door and the witch and groaned, knowing you couldn’t leave her there. You’d just have to deal with the boy later. Tapping the ball, it disconnected from your ear as you channeled a small surge of power in order to activate it. The letter ‘C’ was drawn on the surface before the call connected. A hologram of Archmage Taldir appeared above the orb, looking as strict as ever. Man, you hated dealing with that guy.
You cleared your throat. “Witch hunter Y/N calling in for a transport for a criminal.”
“Crime?”
“Illegal use of love magic on a human being.”
“Have you erased this humans memory?”
You looked away, scratching your cheek. “It’s, uhh, in progress, sir.”
He stuck his nose in the air. “You better complete the job or you can forget about your witch hunter status!”
The hologram disappeared as he ended the call. You groaned in frustration. Why hadn’t you just lied and said yes? Because you knew you’d be in even more trouble if the council found out you had lied. You had to find that boy, no matter the cost.
A magical portal appeared and out walked several mages dressed in black robes. They grabbed the prisoner, sealing her mouth when she wouldn’t stop yelling profanity at them. They stepped through the portal and it disappeared.
You turned to leave when a shimmer caught your eye. You approached it curiously, kneeling down to inspect it. It was a ring engraved with the word ‘NCT’. It must belong to the boy!
───── ⋆⋅🎃⋅⋆ ─────
For the next week, you kept your eyes open for the boy but had no luck. You had described him to the members of Got7, but ‘skinny boy with brown hair’ was too generic of a description.
In the meantime, you made yourself comfortable by sending memes to Jackson who was sitting across from you doing the same to you. You found the perfect gif and sent it, trying your best not to laugh.
He opened it, expression softening as a cute little bunny invaded his screen. Seconds later, it morphed into a demonic creature with sharp teeth, red beady eyes and its fur covered in blood. He screamed, throwing the phone into the air. It landed right by your feet.
You burst out laughing, clutching your sides. “You should have – aha – seen your FACE!”
He scowled at you, before looking away with a huff. “You’re such a jerk.”
“I know,” you grinned, leaning down to pick up his phone. When you did this, the ring, placed on a thin chain, slipped out from under your shirt.
Bambam noticed it and asked curiously, “Where’d you get that, noona?”
You held up the ring, inspecting it again. “I forgot about this. That boy dropped it.”
Jinyoung facepalmed. “You had a clue this entire time and you forgot?”
“Hehe,” you rubbed the back of your neck sheepishly as you removed the necklace, handing it over to Jinyoung to inspect.
He resisted the strong urge to smack you upside the head. “He’s a member of NCT.”
Bambam started to laugh at the situation. “We could have found him a week ago, noona!”
“Oops?”
Jinyoung sent Jaebum a look and the leader knew what he wanted. He took the ring and motioned for you to follow. You walked beside him, glancing over curiously.
“Where are we going, JB?”
“NCT is a kpop group and they happen to be here for an interview.”
“Damn.”
“You really don’t like to make things easy, do you?” He chuckled, patting your head.
You pouted in response. “It’s not like I do it on purpose.”
“He’s most likely gonna be with the other members. NCT is a large group, so we’re going to have to be patient and -”
“Hey, you!” You called out to the boy as soon as you saw him, but as soon as his eyes met yours, he took off running. Jaebum tried to grab your arm but you were too quick, giving chase after the boy. His stamina was great, you had to admit. You had chased him through the building, out the back, and down four blocks before he finally ran into a dead-end alley.
You put your hand on the wall for support, sucking air into your burning lungs. He was barely breathing heavy at all. If you had been a normal person, you would have asked what sorcery this was.
When you regained a somewhat normal breathing pattern, you took a few steps forward. He matched them by stepping back until he was against the wall. His eyes were shimmering with fear and his voice shook when he spoke.
“What do you wa-ant from me?”
You frowned, keeping your distance. “You don’t have to be afraid. I won’t hurt you.”
“What are you?!”
“A witch.”
His eyes flashed through several emotions. As bad as he didn’t want to believe you, he couldn’t deny what he had witnessed.
You chewed on your lip for a moment before pulling the ring out of your pocket and holding it out. “This is yours, right? You dropped it the other day.”
“You chased me… all this way… to give my ring back?”
“Uh, not exactly,” you rubbed the back of your neck. “Look, I’ll be honest. Humans aren’t supposed to know that witches exist, it’s against our law. Unless you’re a helper to said witch, but that’s a different story. You’re scared, right? You keep having flashbacks of that day and you have trouble sleeping?”
He slowly nodded, still not fully trusting you.
“I can erase your memory of that night. You’ll forget everything you saw and live a normal life again!” you smiled encouragingly, stepping forward.
He closed his eyes, taking a few deep breaths before opening them. Fear still lingered, but you could see him trying to conquer it as he stepped towards you. “What if… what if I don’t want to forget?”
You tilted your head to the side. Well, this was new. Most humans begged for their memories to be taken. Knowing that witches and powerful magic existed wasn’t nearly as exciting as most people believed it to be. “If I allow that, I’ll get into serious trouble with the magic council.”
“What about a witch helper?”
“That’s a hard job, you know. Dangerous, too!”
He looked determined now as he forced himself to close the distance, lifting a shaking hand towards you. You plopped the ring into his palm, watching as he took another deep breath.
“Please… allow me to become your helper.”
You paused, thoughtfully, head tilted to the side. You could definitely use some more helpers. “Fine, but you’re filling out all the paperwork to send to the council!”
He smiled softly with a nod. “My name is Mark Lee.”
“Y/N,” you held your hand out, palm up, and little streaks of fire started to form words in the air, eventually spelling out ‘nice to meet you’.
The fire reflected in his eyes as he traced the words. “That’s terrifyingly cool.”
You chuckled at him.
His eyes glanced at the clock on the wall. “Shoot, I’m going to be late for the interview!” With a bow, he bid you farewell before taking off towards the studio just as Jaebum rounded the corner, the pair nearly colliding.
Jaebum watched him before turning to you with a raised brow. “What happened?”
“I’ve got a new helper, apparently,” you shrugged, nonchalantly.
“You were supposed to erase his memory, Y/N,” he sighed.
“He didn’t want me too.”
“That’s never stopped you before.”
“Yeah, well… something about him is special.”
“You think he’s cute, don’t you?”
“…”
“Did you at least brand him?”
“Uhh…”
“Tell him the rules of being a helper?”
“Shit.”
“Give him a family ring?”
“…”
He groaned, slamming his palm against his forehead. “How did you even function before you met us?!”
“There’s a reason that witches are permitted helpers, Jaebum!”
He only sighed, grabbing your hand as he took off towards the studio.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another week went by when you were at Dexter’s. He tried to balance his time with you and Rita a bit more, so she didn’t get suspicious of all the time together, and tonight was your night together. He was doing some research on an unsub -- or victim, depending on who you asked -- when you got a call from Emily.
You frowned, looking at the number. Why would she be calling? No one on the team had called you since you left for Miami since you weren’t working. What could she need?
You answered the phone, a sense of despair already building in your gut before any words were out of your or her mouth.
“Hello?” you greeted uneasily as you stood from the chair beside Dexter.
“Y/N? It’s Reid,” she said, her voice totally in “chief” mode.
“What? What is it?” you demanded, desperately trying to keep your wits.
“He’s been taken. We had an unsub in custody, Benjamin Merva, and he’s left the building. Garcia and Reid are nowhere to be found.”
“Oh my god. Okay. I’m on my way,” you said quickly. “Update me with anything you have.”
“I will.”
With that, you two hung up and you grabbed your purse, stuffing your things into it.
“I have to go,” you urgently said before Dexter stood.
“Wait, what’s going on?” he asked.
“It’s Spence. He’s been kidnapped.”
“Shit. Okay. Uh, what are you going to do?”
“Fly up to Washington and help my team,” you said without even thinking. You got to his door and turned to him, your hand on the handle. “I’m going to find my husband.”
He strode over to you. “Wait. Do you… Do you want me to come with you?”
You frowned at him for a moment. “I… I mean I wouldn’t mind but why would you want to come with me?” you asked, a little flabbergasted.
“Because… I lie to everyone I know... but not you. I tell you the truth, all of it, and you don't run from me. Deb’s my sister, but she doesn’t know the truth about me. You’re...well for lack of a better term, my best friend, and I don’t want to see you go through this alone.”
“But what about work? Rita? Deb?”
“I’ve got some vacation time, and Rita will understand.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, Spencer needs you, and you need a friend.”
Part of you wanted to say you’d have friends up in D.C, but Dexter was right. Neither of you had anyone that knew the whole truth about you and accepted you, and right now, before you went berserk, you needed that odd calming sensation that Dex always provided.
“Okay, yeah. Let’s go. Call Rita from the car. I’ll go straight to the airport. The Bureau should have a jet on standby,” you informed as you exited the apartment and he locked it quickly behind him.
“And they’ll just let you use it?” he wondered, trying to keep up with your pace.
“A high profile criminal has escaped, two federal agents are his prisoners, and we have no clue where they went. So yes, they’ll want their best profiler on the case, no expense is too large,” you said with an assuring look before jumping into your rental car.
You tried not to break every law on the way to the airport, but it was hard.  Dexter called Rita and she was fully supportive, unsurprisingly. Finally, you got there, already calling the Bureau, and got clearance to use the jet. They had it ready and fueled and let you and Dexter on. Of course, they wondered who he was and you told him he was with Miami PD, explaining he was a friend and colleague that might be able to help on the case.
Then you two were in the air.
Your leg was bouncing erratically. You tried calling Spencer twice yourself, but it only went to voicemail and on the second time, you couldn’t stop the tears. Without leads from Emily, and no distraction from the team, and nothing to do but sit on the plane, there was nothing to stop you from breaking down. The heels of your palms went into your eyes as you began to sob. Dexter sat across from you, unsure how to console you.
“They’re going to find him,” he tried and you just looked at him, not trusting yourself to say a word.
You picked up the laptop on the jet and opened it, trying to get a video chat going with someone on the team -- Emily.
“When was he taken?” you demanded in an even tone as soon as he picked up.
“An hour ago.”
“It took you an hour to report this to me?”
“We didn’t know he was taken. We thought he was part of the evacuation.”
“Evacuation? Emily, what the hell is going on?”
“Owen Quinn, an agent who worked here over a year ago sent an email to Spencer. It had his badge and where to find him. Spence found him in a storage unit barely alive. He told us he was held captive and tortured by the Strangler.”
“I remember that guy. Wouldn’t let the case go so he quit, right?”
“Right. He says he was abducted and tortured by a husband and wife, but their son was kind to him. Now we didn’t know if he was concocting this or if he was telling the truth. The parents were dead, and the son, Theo, was gone. We thought maybe he killed the parents, maybe he was the strangler, because the storage unit was in Quinn’s named, paid for in cash, and inside we found seven hyoid bones. We thought he might have broken Benjamin out, but they left him for dead in the garage.”
“Okay, so where are Spence and Garcia?” you questioned.
“That’s what we need to find out. We aren’t sure who took them yet, but we do know Benjamin and them are missing. Someone must’ve been on the inside to help because he was locked on the fifth floor.”
“Wait, you said Spence found the guy in a storage unit. Did he go alone?”
“Not exactly. He told me what was happening and requested that SWAT go with him.”
“Why didn’t he just take you and the team?” you wondered, and more importantly, why didn’t he tell you he was going to find him on his own?
“He said whoever sent him the email wanted him to find it. I was outside as soon as they called in finding a body.”
“So now what? Any leads?”
“We thought that Quinn was converted, but we got that part wrong. Benjamin leads a cult, and agent Meadows is part of it all.”
“A… a cult?” you questioned. “What the hell would a cult want with Garcia and Spencer?” you asked, more to yourself than anything else. “Okay so no leads?”
“No, and the systems are down.”
“Fantastic,” you groaned. “Alright. Find out what you can about this Meadows… Call if you have any updates. I’m going to go over what I can on the ride up. By the way, I’m bringing a friend,” you said, your eyes shooting at Dex across the table.
“Oh? Who?”
“Dexter Morgan. Forensics for Miami PD.”
She peered at you for a moment before nodding. “Okay, we’ll get him a visitors badge when he gets in.”
“Thanks, Em.”
You shut the laptop lid and sat back into the chair, thinking, dissecting everything you knew about cults.
“You’re pretty...collected when you’re working.”
You smirked. “Funny, I could say the same for you. You get a calm that washes over you when you...work,” you said, giving him a look that you both meant something other than work.
“Your team seem really good, and you’re intelligent. You’ll find him,” he assured.
You shook your head, tears coming to your eyes. “What if I don’t, Dex? What if the last times we spoke were all just bullshit because I couldn’t keep my insecurities in check?”
“Hey, you can’t help how you feel. You can’t live your life as if every moment would be the last with someone. If that were true, no one would ever hurt anyone and we’d always be forgiving and never mad. It’s just not realistic.”
“I know but--” you stopped, a sob choking you. You let the tears flow before bending over to sob. “I just want him safe.”
“He will be,” he said, consoling you.
-------------------
You marched into the FBI building, after getting Dexter a visitor’s badge. He followed you diligently into the bullpen.
“Get me up to speed,” you ordered as soon as you walked into the area, eyeing your colleagues.
“Uh, Y/N, are you sure you’re up for this?” Tara asked. “It is Spence. Maybe you should just let us work and--”
“No,” you firmly said, a darkness in your eyes. Your eyes flashed to Emily’s. “You can fire me for insubordination if you’d like but if you all get to stay on the case, then so do I. Whether I’m on or off the FBI payroll, I will be here, fighting to find him just as much as you.”
Emily nodded at you. “Okay. We take care of our own.”
Rossi clapped your back as Luke smiled at you.
“Meadows, she’s one of his followers. She took Theo, their new messiah, Reid, and Garcia. Our systems just came back up and it looks like someone hacked it from within the building.”
“Okay, she worked for ViCAP, why?” you asked.
“That’s the million dollar question,” Rossi agreed.
“We’re about to check out the camera’s,” Matt informed and you glanced over to him. You followed him while Dexter stayed behind and looked at the case files you’d given him.
Three of you watched the security footage, watching where Merva went, where Meadows went, when Garcia used her key card, until finally -- there he was. Spencer. Your heart felt relief and despair in one swift moment. You kept your eyes glued to the screen to see what clue’s he’d leave behind.
Sure enough, on a second watchthrough, he was signing “Ben’s Believers” and this threw everyone for a loop.
“Why would he sign that? He already knows we figured that out.”
You and Luke looked at each other with quizzical faces. What was that supposed to mean?
Everyone regrouped in the roundtable room, where Rossi led the new question.
“Why is at the heart of every BAU investigation, and this one isn’t any different.”
“Why did she work for ViCap,” Luke surmised.
“Exactly. As we know, ViCAP agents liaison between federal and local agencies. The whole point is to put together details of crimes that could be connected across the U.S. Then it gets on our radar,” Rossi explained.
You made the connection in your head quickly. “So she’s been wiping out any connection to the cult,” you said, your stomach getting queasy.
Rossi continued, “We had to go back to when she joined and rebuild her case histories.
We found a pattern that she was hiding.”
JJ added, “So the murders she was covering up were the ones where the victims were missing hyoid bones.”
“Like the ones you found in the storage unit. Seven, right?” you affirmed.
“As it turns out, this cult has killed more than seven,” Rossi said with a bit of solemness in his voice.
Emily frowned as she asked, “How many?”
“299,” JJ informed and suddenly your legs felt like jello.
“Oh my god,” you gasped out, holding onto the chair in front of you.
Dexter reached for you. “I’m gonna get her to some fresh air,” he informed, and the team nodded. You leaned into him as he led you from the room, out into the elevator area.
“Dex… 299 kills… and she’s been hiding it,” you breathed. “299… What if… What if they want Spencer for the last kill?” You shook your head as tears rolled down your cheeks. “I can’t lose him. I just can’t. Not like this, alright?”
He suddenly pulled you close to his chest and wrapped his arms around you as you sobbed into him, clinging to his shirt. Some would say it was odd, finding comfort in the arms of a serial killer, especially being an FBI agent - but for you, this made sense. Dexter was no more monster than you or anyone on your team. He only did what most of them wished they could do.
Eventually, you dried your eyes and went back to the round table room. You hated to hear the things you were hearing about your husband, but you had to hear them.
“All right, look, The Believers, they're just like Jonestown, Manson, Heaven's Gate, even Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. There's always a charismatic leader and a strong right hand who appears as a devoted disciple. In this case, Meadows,” Tara was saying as you stepped back in, all eyes on you but discussion still flowed.
Merva has killed 299 innocents for a reason. We just don't know why. But now that he's taken Reid and Garcia, The Believers have declared war on the BAU. So this has got to be working toward their end game, one that could make either Reid or Garcia their 300th victim, perhaps their last,” Emily stated, her eyes flashing to you. “I’m sorry, Y/N, I know this is hard to hear but--”
“No, I know. I was just… thinking the same thing out there. They’re a cult, right? They’ve got victims. It only makes sense to round it off to a certain number,” you said shakily.
“Garcia wasn’t part of this, she was just racing to the elevator,” Matt said.
“So then it’s Spence,” you said definitely, your eyes touching on all of your teammates. “It’s always been him. According to what you’ve gathered, he fits the victimology. A protector…” You bit your lip to keep from breaking down.
“Reid has to know something we don’t,” Tara insisted.
Luke added, “Ben's Believers. Reid could have told us anything, but he chose that.”
“Okay, so why? What is it about them that we’re missing?” you questioned.
With that, you wracked your brain for several minutes before you went to the restroom. One, you were in there to take a breather from this, get out of your own head for a moment. Secondly, mother nature was calling.
A minute later, you heard someone leave their stall and wash their hands. Then the door opened and you heard a second pair of feet. Now there were three people in the restroom.
“Hey,” Emily said so someone.
“Hi,” JJ said back and instantly, your blood boiled. You rolled your eyes, about to just leave so you wouldn’t have to hear this, but then suddenly she spoke again, and the words caught your attention. “Did I ever tell you about the Redskins game? Gosh, 14 years ago, now? Well, uh, Spence--Spence got us good tickets. Actually, Gideon gave them to him., and talked him into asking me to go. So you know, I just figured all the youngest team members should hang out, so I, of course, asked Garcia to come along. Ugh.” She made a sound of embarrassment. “Turns out Morgan and Hotch were giving him pointers on the side thinking it was going to be a date.”
Emily made a sort of amused noise before JJ continued.
“Gosh, I mean, he’d never been on one before. Poor Spence. He didn’t know what to do.”
You closed your eyes and slowly shook your head. You were trying to remember this was a long time ago, and that he’d proven he didn’t want her like that any more. But right now, with him missing, and her remembering this date so… fondly…. It was really crawling up your spine.
“I’m just glad he forgave me.”
“Ah, he adores you,” Emily implored. “And it sounds like that was the beginning of something even better. The 3 of you have been inseparable since I met you.”
Suddenly, it sounded like JJ got choked up and said, “I don’t know how to do this without them. If we can’t get them back--”
“It’s okay,” Emily assured and that was your cue. You ripped open the stall door and stared at JJ and Emily. They broke apart and JJ’s eyes slightly widened at you.
“Uh, Y/N, I didn’t realize you were in here,” she suddenly said, trying to wipe her eyes.
“Yeah, I bet you didn’t,” you all but spat. “Probably wouldn’t be going on about a date you had with my husband years ago if you didn’t. Maybe we should call Will and tell him how fond you are of that time?” you asked, your eyes narrowing.
“Y/N,” Emily said carefully.
“No, this is not okay,” you said, your eyes shooting to hers. “I know their missing but using this to cash in on some missed connection with my husband is fucking sick, don’t you think?”
“We’re all a little high strung right now,” Emily started. “Let’s just take a breather. She didn’t mean anything by it. We all want Spencer and Penelope to come back home safe and sound.”
“Yeah maybe some more than others. Emily, do you know what she did? What she’s trying to do to my family?” you shouted. “She’s waited years to bring this up, and now… now that Spence is missing it’s just--”
A knock came to the bathroom door before Dexter suddenly poked his head in.
“Everything okay in here?” he asked, eyeing the three of you.
“No, it’s not okay. JJ thinks it’s fine to just--”
“Okay, yeah, we’re just going to take a little walk, alright?” he asked, stepping in and putting his hands on your shoulders from behind to pivot you out.
“Let go of me, Dex!” you ordered.
“As soon as you calm the fuck down. This isn’t the time or place to lose your cool. You need to remember who you are, and what you do, and what your mission is right now,” he informed once he got you at the end of the hallway, in a secluded corner. His face was just inches from yours as he tired to get you to focus up. “Remember your husband is on the line. You can deal with this other shit later, right?”
You sighed, running your hands through your hair. “You’re right. You’re right. You’re always right,” you said in defeat. You shook your head. “This case...whew….” You blew out air and kept shaking your head. “Dex, I…. I’ve been thinking, and… I love my husband very much. I would do anything for him. He’s my one true love. I can’t imagine life without him,” you explained watching his face as he tried to digest what you were saying. “I want you to know that… if it ever came down to it… to choosing him over what we do, I’ll choose him. Every time. I need to know that you’re okay with that.”
He blinked for a few seconds, looking at you, searching your face for questions to answers that you weren’t sure of.
“Okay. Yeah. I can respect that,” he agreed.
“Thank you. I just… I can’t lose him, and if I get him back....I don’t want to lose him to the other side of me. I can’t live without him. I hope you can understand.”
“I do,” he assured with a nod. “When my brother tried to kill Deb, I just… I guess I snapped. Sure, Bryan was blood, he was like me, but he wasn’t the one who had always been there for me. Deb knows me. We shared a childhood, a father, a mother. We work together. Bryan was just a distant memory to me. I chose her because I guess… a life without her seemed a hell of a lot harder than losing Bryan. He was nothing to me, I’d lived without him this long…”
“Because you love her,” you assured. “It’s the same reason you protect Rita, Deb, everyone you’re close to.”
“I think you forget my diagnosis.”
“I think you devolve into self-fulfilling prophecies,” you accused with a half smile. “Thank you for being here with me,” you said, squeezing his arm.
“Sure. You wanna get back to the investigation now?”
You nodded with a smile. The two of you walked into the bullpen where Emily and Rossi were putting together more of Meadows’ profile. Suddenly, it clicked for her and she remembered both of them. They were both at a ranch in Colorado, they were part of a cult then. Meadows was one of the wives the cult leader had taken, and that’s how they knew Merva, he was there too.
Tara, Luke, and Matt set up video to watch it. You’d seen it a few times too, but now it meant more. There were kids they were trying to rescue, Prentiss and Spence had gone in undercover. Then the place had exploded, killing the messiah, now they were out for revenge. Emily and JJ approached with news that local FBI was guarding the ranch, and that the women and kids were offered a fresh start through WITSEC. That’s where Meadows took her chance - she accepted help, knowing she’d betray the government.
You were listening, your eyes flashed to Dexter, when behind him, a battered Garcia came in.
“Holy shit. Are you okay?” you asked, breezing past Dex to get to her. You put your hands on her shoulders just as she began talking.
“It’s a warehouse that’s in Hillcrest. 18 minutes,” she informed, clearly distraught. “I can take you there. You gotta hurry. They hurt Reid, he’s been bleeding there. They’re in trucks with Theo. I heard a gunshot. It’s a warehouse--” Garcia began again and you closed your eyes before hugging her. She was still talking. She was in shock.
“Someone grab a jacket, or a blanket, or something,” you directed.
“On it,” Luke said quickly.
“Garcia, Garcia, listen to me. Is Spence okay?” you asked but she just kept rambling. You looked to Dexter, worry evident in your eyes. Within three minutes, the team was geared up and ready to head out the door on Garcia’s directions.
“We’re going to the warehouse now,” Emily informed. “Y/N, are you coming? You can’t come as an agent but I’ll let you ride along.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m coming.” You turned to Dexter as you walked by. “You’re coming with me. I can’t do this without you. If he’s…. If he’s not--”
“He’s going to be fine. Your team is good. They’re serial killers, Y/N, they aren’t just going to shoot him and walk away. It’s all about a protocol, and MO with these people. If they really want him to be his 300th victim, they won’t do it unceremoniously.”
You nodded, choking back tears and the lump in your throat as he spoke to you.
“Alright. Let’s go find my husband.”
He gave you a nod and the two of you left, joining the team in an SUV. They raced to the warehouse. You stayed in the car, too nerve wracked to go in. Dexter and you sat quietly, and the team came out. They shook their heads.
Emily got in the car with you. “He wasn’t in there. They killed Theo though. That must’ve been the gunshot Garcia heard.”
“Then… where did they take him?” you wondered.
With that, Emily and the team called Garcia and JJ. Spence apparently told Garcia that it all happens at 10:23, but it was past that time so no one knew what it meant. She explained how they made her rig the system so they could get past weigh stations and clear the trucks of all history. She blamed herself and you felt so bad for her.
Now all of you were racking your brains trying to figure out what that could possibly mean. Theories and ideas were flying across the room. Garcia suddenly remembered that Cyrus was technically reborn in Kentucky due to his prison time.
At least it was a start. All of you boarded the plane and more ideas continued to go around. Dexter even threw in a couple of bible passages he knew, and you threw in one as well, but nothing was sticking until JJ found something.
The team realized it was Arcadia, a synonym of Eden, that he needed to be found in. You wanted to relax, but what if you all were wrong? What if it was a misdirect? What if it wasn’t the right place at all?
But then, Garcia pulled land deeds, and sure enough, Merva had land in the area. The team landed, got their gear on, and you joined them.
Emily put her hand up as she was fastening her vest when you picked a vest up. “Woah, hey, I don’t think you should be in the field on this one.”
“They have Spence, Emily. My husband? I’m not going to sit in the car on this one. I need to be here. It’s one more pair of hands to help in case the situation gets out of hand.”
She eyed you up and down but then nodded. With that, you put the vest on, strapped on your gun, pulled your hair back into a small bun, and all of you got into the cars to make your way to the plot of land they owned.
SWAT and your team stealthily walked across the land as Dexter stayed behind in the cars. You wanted him there with you, knowing he would kill better, quieter, and faster than most of the others, but seeing as he was just forensics to the FBI, he wasn’t allowed anywhere near this.
You took out one gunman from behind, before sweeping around a tent, and suddenly, the sound of Heaven filled your ears -- Spencer was talking. He was alive, thank God. You wanted to breathe a sigh of relief but you still needed to be quiet.
Then Meadows said he was stalling and suddenly he was silent again. Your heart felt heavy again but you plucked up, realizing he needed you now more than ever.
The team was still patrolling as Merva was speaking, when suddenly Rossi saw one of the Believers and shot him, before he could shoot Rossi. Immediately, everyone made a break for the front, where the sacrifice was taking place. Matt, Emily, and you stormed the area. Matt took out two men with automatic guns when Merva ran towards Spence with the knife at his throat.
“Merva!” you shouted, and as soon as he turned, you shot at him - twice. He fell down and Emily ran to check his pulse. With everyone away from Spence, you immediately went to his side, unbuckling him from the wood he was strapped too.
“Are you okay?” you asked, worry in your voice.
“I’m fine, I’m fine,” he assured just as you got the last buckle undone. He fell into your arms and you hugged him tighter than you ever had in your life before peppering his cheeks and lips with kisses. You didn’t care who was around or if PDA was a problem for anyone. You almost lost the love of your life.
Which then reminded you that behind you was a pack of wild animals that were willing to let him get sacrificed. Your bloodlust kicked into maximum overdrive and you had to mentally calm yourself.
You helped him out of the area and got him back to the SUV where Dexter stood, leaning against the car waiting for you all.
When he saw you, he smiled, extending his hand. “You must be the famous Dr. Reid,” he said cheerfully.
Spence took his hand.
“I’m sorry, have we met?” he asked.
“Oh, Spence, this is Dexter. He’s… he’s a good friend from Miami. He came up to support me and help on this case,” you informed.
“Ah. Well, I’m glad to meet you.”
“I’m glad you’re okay. This one was going out of her mind,” Dex said as he looked at you.
“I’m sorry,” he said, apologizing before kissing your hair. “I never want to make you worry.”
“Well let’s just get you home, okay?”
On the way back, you rode in the back of the SUV, sandwiched between Dexter and Spence. You rested your head on Spencer’s, smiling every so often at Dex. For just a few moments, life, despite being messy, felt completely right between these two.
On the plane ride back, Dexter sat across from you two and Spencer and him got to know each other rather well. Dex seemed to like to pick his brain, and Spencer seemed to like getting asked a million and one questions about himself or any myriad of things.
It didn’t go unnoticed by you that JJ had glanced your way a few times with an odd look on her face. You returned the look, keeping your expression even.
The Not-So-Amazing Mary Jane Part 20: Is ‘Danger’ really her middle name?*
Tumblr media
Previous Part
Next Part
Master Post
Last time I established that Mary Jane, whilst a gifted civilian, was not  a super hero. This time I am going to examine the extent to which those ‘gifts’ can keep her and others safe. Specifically, I’m going to be examining MJ’s combat record!
Towards the end of AMJ #1 Peter suggests to MJ a dangerous scenario she could find herself in whilst making her movie; namely surrounded by villains. MJ deflates this idea by citing the time she defeated a criminal with a baseball bat and they joke about how that wasn’t an isolated incident.
Tumblr media
The point of the scene was to convey that MJ has in fact defeated criminal threats in the past. And so Peter (and by extension the readers) shouldn’t be worried about the fact that MJ really is  surrounded by villains.
At face value this seems simple enough right?
MJ is at risk from villains in AMJ. But she’s defeated a super villain(s) before armed with a very simple weapon. Therefore she’ll be fine right?
Well…not exactly no.
Apart from how the conversation doesn’t at all address MJ protecting other people , the circumstances of that encounter were rather different to the situation in AMJ. In fact every  circumstance wherein Mary Jane has had to defend herself has been rather different. And that applies to situations where she has physically overpowered or  outsmarted her assailants.
To illuminate this point we’re going to dive into some of MJ’s successes in dangerous situations. There are way too many to be definitive about this so I will admit I might’ve missed something, but I’m endeavouring to give you an overview nevertheless.
Hobgoblin
For starters we have ASM #260, where Mary Jane found herself abducted by crooks in the employ of the Rose and the Hobgoblin. The crooks were actually targeting a pregnant Liz Allan Osborn, but MJ was with her when they struck so she was taken too. The crooks had the element of surprise and outnumbered MJ two to one. However, they didn’t use weapons and lacked any super powers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MJ tried to fight back here, but was ultimately helpless. So, MJ lost to two normal unarmed crooks, albeit they surprised her.
Nevertheless, that doesn’t bode well for her in AMJ.
In ASM #261 Hobgoblin (who has comparable strength to Spider-Man) shows up and threatens Liz, which angers MJ enough to charge at him. He very easily swats her aside.
Tumblr media
Hobgoblin’s ability to do this so casually demonstrates just how much more powerful he is than Mary Jane, and the fact that she (at worst) scratched her chin a little also proves how little of his power he was even using in the first place. MJ on on one was never going to beat him even if he refrained from using his extensive arsenal.
Later in the same issue Harry is taken prisoner too. He tries to use a gun to threaten the guard into letting them all go but can’t pull the trigger. MJ knocks the guard out with a shovel whilst he is distracted.
Tumblr media
It’s highly unlikely the guard lacked a firearm so even with the shovel Mary Jane wouldn’t have won without the element of surprise on her side.
After escaping the trio are accosted by Hobgoblin, but Spidey is there to intervene. Mary Jane is thankful for his presence, which all but confirms that she believe she or the others could save themselves without him.
Tumblr media
In fact, earlier on when Harry first showed up MJ asked him if Peter knew what was going on. Obviously she was hoping he was on his way to help them, further proving how she was aware of how disadvantaged they were.
Tumblr media
During the course of the battle Liz goes into labour and she and MJ find themselves surrounded by flames. Mentally MJ is desperate for Peter to find and help them.
Tumblr media
Harry comes to help Liz and Mj but soon all three of them are trapped by the inferno and yell for Spider-Man to help them. Mary Jane even says that they will ‘never survive’ without his help.
Tumblr media
The adventure demonstrates that whilst MJ is good in a crisis her ability to liberate, protect and rescue herself and others has clear limits.
There is nothing in the story to indicate she had the natural ability to defeat the guard on her own, to defend Liz and Harry from Hobgoblin or get them away from the fire. She does take advantages of resources (like the shovel) and opportunities that come her way, but they occurred purely by chance.
Based upon this experience, Mary Jane would know that if a similar situation occurred she shouldn’t be passive but nor should she presume she could survive off of her own abilities alone. She would be outmatched and it’d be ridiculous to simply presume that there’d be a potential weapon around, that the chance to surprise her opponent would crop up. And if there was a super villain like Hobgoblin involved she’d have no defence beyond relying upon a super hero to intervene.
Basically she was impressive here but her talents could only take her so far, even with luck on her side.
Alastair Smythe
Not too long after the Hobgoblin incident MJ found herself in another tricky spot in ASM Annual #19. The story entailed Alastair Smythe mistakenly believing Mary Jane was Spider-Man. He consequently abducted her and her Aunt Anna with one of his Spider Slayers.
Intelligent, resourceful and quick witted as ever, MJ saved herself and Aunt Anna. However, this relied heavily upon Smythe’s gullibility, luck and Spider-Man’s intervention, something MJ actively sought out.
First she got Aunt Anna out of danger by admitting she was Spider-Man.
Tumblr media
Then she convinced Smythe that he ought to record his victory and persuaded him to break into a camera store to that end. She hoped that the store’s alarm would summon help; another example of her relying upon the intervention of others.
Whilst in the store she left a note for people to find before Smythe whisked her off again. At the same time Spidey was independantly on the trail of the Watson women. He found Smythe’s hideout and rescued Anna, overcoming Smythe’s deadly traps in the process.
Taking Anna to a police officer Spidey learns about MJ’s note. It informed the police of Anna’s location and instructed Spidey that she’d try to get Smythe to the Daily Bugle building.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By chance Smythe flew MJ over Peter’s apartment building, which had a skylight. Tricking Smythe into posing for a photograph, MJ removed her boot an dropped it through Peter’s window, hoping he was home and could come rescue her. Once again MJ was desperately banking on luck and reliant upon the help of a third party to save herself.
Tumblr media
MJ managed to get Smythe to the Bugle, again hoping that Peter was there. Unfortunately he wasn’t there but the Bugle staff recognized MJ and called the cops.
Tumblr media
Tired of her tricks Smythe simply dropped MJ mid-air. Luckily Spidey had caught up with them and rescued her.
Tumblr media
Once again, MJ’s victory here couldn’t have occurred without an assist and and a lot  of luck; indeed, she was outright banking on the latter. These are things nobody can truly rely  upon in any given crisis. The probability of help showing up just in time or miracles occurring at just the right time are very low.
Inferno Demons
Next up we come to the tie-in issues to the (mostly X-Men centric) crossover event Inferno.
Inferno was weird, but all you need to know is that demonic activity throughout New York causes a variety of strange phenomenon. The most common of these involved inanimate objects coming to life and attacking people.
This happened during one of Mary Jane’s modelling shoots where gold jewellery came to life and attacked her and the crew on the shoot. Using quick thinking (and her knowledge of jewellery) MJ remembered that gold was a soft metal and used a fire-axe to chop up the demonic bling, inspiring the crewmembers to do the same.
Tumblr media
When we catch up to MJ again it’s implied she’s instructed the others to build a barricade to keep the demon hordes out. She also defends a co-worker by using a makeshift weapon to attacks one of the demons. She orders everyone to rebuild the barricade but privately wonders what they could possibly do next, wishing Peter was there to help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MJ, using yet more of her impressive smarts, leads the group into the sewers, correctly deducing them to be the safest place in the city. However, that safety is merely relative because the gang are then attacked by demonically possessed water.
Tumblr media
Luckily the water is vulnerable to the flash of a camera, which even more luckily went off during the attack. The camera was owned by one of the crewmembers named Hal.
Tumblr media
The camera’s battery life is limited though, but thankfully MJ gets a bright idea. Whilst Hal stalls the demons with his camera the other crewmembers break the gas pipes. She then instructs Hal to hold off the demons whilst they all retreat. She proceeds to use the lighter to make a torch, intent on setting the gas alight and hopefully killing the demons.
Her plan doesn’t quite pan out as intended though. She comes across Spidey duelling the Hobgoblin. Instinctively she threw the torch at Hobby to help out Peter, giving him the chance to throw him into the tunnel, inadvertently igniting the gas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spidey swings MJ away from the explosion, the art arguably implying that she would’ve been harmed without his help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole adventure is a tour de force for Mary Jane. Her bravery, smarts, resourcefulness and resolve are on full display here.
Nevertheless, for most of the encounter she needed to retreat and get her companions to do the same as they were still grossly outmatched. The times they won fights were against either a singular opponent or against a group of small and comparatively weak opponents their greater strength and numbers could overwhelm. And had Hal not accompanied her, had his camera not gone off and had her opponents not had a very particular weakness they’d have been a goners.
It’s also arguable that had Spider-Man not shown up she might’ve been severely injured as well because he swung her away from the explosion. However, I will admit since her companions were uninjured it’s plausible that she might’ve been fine without him.
Nevertheless, the story showcases that MJ could only win physical encounters and survive dangerous situations when she went up against weaker opponents, had back up and luck was on her side again.
Terrorists
Jumping forward we enter the Clone Saga where there are actually a few dangerous encounters to look at, though we’re just going to focus upon two; one where MJ is more passive and one where she is more assertive.
The first is from Spider-Man Unlimited #8. I don’t exactly believe in trigger warning people, but for the record this might touch a nerve if you were affected by 9/11.
Initially, MJ and her friend Carly are at a restaurant situated in one of the Twin Towers. Suddenly sadistic terrorists in high tech armour break in guns blazing, killing at least one person.
They are so sadistic in fact that one of them needs to restrain the other so that they have live hostages to bargain with. MJ to her credit tells her friend to not rush to the exit as it will get congested, demonstrating smarts in a crisis. She also has the common sense to keep calm so as to not risk the terrorists harming her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For greater context MJ is unarmed and pregnant at this point and lacks any means of communicating with Spider-Man or anyone else for that matter.
The terrorists are heavily armed. The exact capabilities of their tech is unknown but they can clearly fly, move modestly quickly, have a degree of protection from their armour and have very powerful wrist mounted projectiles that are easy to fire and have plenty of ammunition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also seem to have regular firearms too, as evidenced when one of them casually shoots a hostage for annoying him.
Tumblr media
MJ tries to help the injured man and even confronts one of the terrorists to provide aid. He dismisses her but equally casually murders his comrade who shot the man.
Tumblr media
Mary Jane is unhappy with this but keeps a cool head. She admits that she’s lucky she wasn’t shot herself. When she notices ‘Spider-Man’ (actually Peter’s clone Ben Reilly/the Scarlet Spider) she decides to leave things to him and focus upon helping the wounded man.
Whilst I hesitate to call this ‘luck’ (because it’s more than likely he’d have heard the news regardless) Peter himself learns of the situation over the radio and heads out to deal with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spidey slips into the room where the hostages are and, with MJ’s help, quietly moves them towards the elevators, MJ looking after the wounded man’s son.
Tumblr media
The rest of the story is irrelevant for our purposes.
The issue doesn’t paint MJ in the most flattering light. She is much more passive than in any other examples we’ve looked at so far (or indeed will look at going forward). However the story does give her moments that display her intelligence and bravery. More importantly it justifies  why Mary Jane’s best bet isn’t to try and engage the aggressors in this situation.
She is an unarmed woman with no super powers and at best rather basic self-defence skills. Even if she had a gun or was a black belt that’d be have little use here. Her opponents’ armour and technology render hand-to-hand fighting basically pointless and a gun would be of very little use as well.
If she had either the most she could do is blindside or even kill maybe one of the terrorists by targeting their eyes (their only really exposed area). This in turn would also have to distract all the other trigger-happy terrorists (which isn’t a guarantee at all) and give the hostages enough time to escape. However it’s also likely MJ would need to spread the word to enough of the hostages ahead of time (which wouldn’t be easy right under the guards’ noses) so they’d be ready to make a break for it.
Between fear, stress and shock it’s not at all a guarantee even one  of the hostages will have the instincts to make a run for it, and that’s presuming they are all physically fit enough to do that. Children, elderly, disabled people, etc., might not be in a position to move quickly at all. Not to mention the location of the stairs is never specified meaning the hostages would be reliant upon the elevators showing up quickly and having enough room for them all.
Even if the stairs were nearby, even if the elevators were as merciful as possible…they’re at the top of the World Trade Center!
My research informed me that the closest real life equivalent to the restaurant depicted in the story would have been on the 106th and 107th floors of the North Tower. Given how the terrorists could fly and had other technology at their disposal they could’ve easily intercepted the hostages on their way down or on the ground floor itself.
We should also consider that were MJ to initiate this hypothetical plan it almost certainly would’ve resulted in her being harmed or killed. Mary Jane is a heroic and self-sacrificing person who understands Peter’s moral message about responsibility.
But she was also pregnant at the time, and very much wished to keep the baby. Regardless on anyone’s views on pregnancy, family planning, abortion, etc., is it really selfish to argue that Mary Jane wouldn’t have engaged in what would likely have been a suicide mission with very slim odds if it also meant the death of her unborn child? Is that truly an act of selfishness, or of irresponsibility that goes against Peter’s underlying mission? I certainly don’t think so.
Basically what I’m getting at is that Mary Jane in this situation lacked the skills and resources to realistically do all that much and trying to do anything would’ve risked the lives of others, including her own child.
Kaine
The second Clone Saga story to look at is in the ‘Mark of Kaine’, where Mary Jane is abducted by Peter’s clone Kaine.
Kaine’s speed and agility are comparable to Spider-Man’s, if not superior. His strength though is a notch greater and as a clone of Peter he is very intelligent, both scientifically and in terms of strategy. He also has years of experience as a mercenary and is in a state of constant agony due to an illness he has. MJ (pregnant and mentally/emotionally distressed at the time anyway) couldn’t prevent her abduction into the sewers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But MJ was able to briefly get away from him by opening up a high-pressure water pipe whilst Kaine was up close to her and distracted.
Tumblr media
Immediately upon escaping the sewers she came across yet another clone of Peter’s (who later went by the name Spidercide). Although she was confused and uncertain she quickly persuaded ‘Spidercide’ to fight Kaine (who was hot on her heels), giving her a chance to get away again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She managed to make it home where she armed herself with her gun. Initially she confronted the new Peter clone but was unable to shoot him. It is unclear if this was because she missed on purpose or accidentally. The shock of firing the shot caused her to drop the fun in horror.
Tumblr media
When Kaine caught up to her though she wasn’t fast enough to get into a position to use it. He very quickly crossed the room, disarmed and consequently abducted her again.
Tumblr media
I should note that because Kaine has comparable speed to Spider-Man it’s extremely likely that he is physically capable of moving faster than gunshots. Spider-Man himself is fast enough that he can evade rapid machine gun fire (even without his spider sense), which is obviously much faster than the shots from a revolver like MJ’s. Spider-Man has also been shown to be able to still fight with bullet wounds. Because Spider-Man is capable of these feats then Kaine would be too.
What I am trying to convey is that MJ’s initial escapes from Kaine were once more due to luck and her ability to quickly take advantage of whatever limited resources were around her; be they a water pipe, distraction or someone else she can get to fight for her.
When she was in a situation where she in fact had use a weapon to defend herself from a super powered assailant though she failed. And she would’ve failed even if she were better positioned to use her weapon.
The Chameleon
Now we come to MJ’s most famous battle, the one where she defeated the Chameleon. This is an undeniable victory for Mary Jane, no two ways about it. But it’s important that we fully contextualize the experience.
Putting aside how MJ had had dozens of encounters with villains by this point, this was a rare instance where she was forewarned and forearmed. In Spec #244 Peter returned home and informed Mary Jane that the Chameleon had attacked him and learned his secret identity.
Tumblr media
On some level Mary Jane was unnerved by this and frightened that the Russian mercenary might target her in her home, even having nightmares about him. Awaking from one such nightmare Mary Jane arms herself with a baseball bat and goes back to bed, although she prays Peter catches him before he gets anywhere near her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the next issue, she is still clearly anxious about the Chameleon, being unable to sleep until Peter catches him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chameleon, disguised as Peter, actually does go to the Parker residence, specifically to attack Mary Jane. Mary Jane deduces Chammy’s real identity and lures him to the bedroom, consequently surprising him with the baseball bat and threatening him to leave her alone. Chameleon however advances on her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Spider-Man arrives on the scene Chammy is on the floor, having been beaten by MJ.
Tumblr media
He escapes minutes later whilst the Parkers are distracted, which could arguably mean he was playing possum. However this doesn’t change the fact that Mary Jane kicked his ass, he even laments his humiliation whilst fleeing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of MJ’s shining moments and the closest thing to luck she had was that Chameleon wasn’t armed and Peter warned her ahead of time. Personally though I wouldn’t call either of those things luck. Chameleon has at best a sporadic history with using weapons, even whilst fighting super powered beings.
And whilst Peter did warn her ahead of time she already knew about the Chameleon’s existence and has in her time been assaulted by multiple criminals, including those who didn’t know Peter’s identity. Additionally Peter simply informing her is less luck and just more something he’d logically do out of common sense in this or any such similar situation. MJ couldn’t have known Chameleon was definitely going to strike that very same night.
Nevertheless though, she was  forewarned and literally forearmed herself so she was definitely prepared to a large degree for anything to go down.
She was also aided by the fact that the Chameleon seriously underestimated her.
More importantly though Chameleon, unlike everyone else we’ve looked at so far, was unarmed and lacked any abilities that gave him greater physical might than a normal human being. Even so MJ’s main goal was to scare him away not subdue him, signifying she was at least unsure if she could defeat him. This is supported by the dialogue from both Peter and herself in the aftermath, which heavily implies that they were both taken aback by her victory.
Basically, MJ was in a position where she was prepared for any tricks that might be pulled. She had immediate access to a resource to increase her power and that resource put her at a physical advantage over her opponent. An opponent who underestimated her and was tricked themself.
Green Goblin
We jump forward again now into Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #11-12, circa 2005.
Mary Jane was  taken by surprise by Norman Osborn/the Green Goblin when he showed up at her home and drugged her with knockout gas, consequently abducting her.
Tumblr media
MJ knew that Norman might  be on the loose that night by the way.
When she awoke she found Spidey and the Goblin were battling atop the Queensboro bridge, with Peter losing. She pulled out her gun (a different one from during the Clone Saga) and fired (what seems to be two rounds) into the Goblin’s chest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Given the rain, the darkness, the angle and I’m sure the overall stress of the situation this feat is very impressive.
However, the recoil did hurt her to some degree (not seriously) and caused her to lose her balance and fall off the bridge, needing to be saved by Peter.
Tumblr media
More poignantly her shots neither defeated the Goblin nor seriously injured him.
For context, the Goblin’s super powers offer him a degree of durability comparable to Spider-Man’s. He also possesses a healing factor that healed a far more severe chest wound and was wearing armour that offered further protection.
As such he attempted to attack the Parkers just a few minutes later.
Tumblr media
This incident demonstrates MJ’s toughness, her willingness and ability to attack. But it also showcases her relative inexperience with weapons and how she was still outmatched in this instance. She saved Spider-Man for the moment but it resulted in him needing to save her. And of course, it did not actually deafat  the Goblin.
Swarm
We’re jumping forward now to 2006 when Peter’s identity was public knowledge.
As you would expect super villains decided this was the time to target his loved ones. In Sensational Spider-Man v2 #29-30 Swarm (an animated Nazi skeleton covered in bees and wasps under his control) targeted Mary Jane and her co-stars.
In Sen v2 #29 Peter suspects some of his villains might’ve organized a co-ordinated attack on him and his loved ones and asks MJ to return home. MJ refuses, but it should be noted that there were bodyguards protecting the theatre she was rehearsing in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the first panel we can see an armoured person with green lights hovering outside of MJ’s theatre.
Tumblr media
And in the next issue Aunt May’s bodyguards are also armoured and have green lights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This implies MJ’s guards have the same arsenal as May’s.
Peter was working closely with Iron Man at this time and the Parkers were living with him. Additionally, the guards are under orders from Iron Man and their armour resembles his Iron Man designs.
As such it can be presumed the guard’s weapons are similar to Iron Man’s. This would at the very least offer them high defences beyond real life body armour. And it’d mean they’d have heavy fire power through repulsor technology. Plus of course they can fly.
These guards might not be super heroes per se but they are in the same league as them in terms of raw power. They aren’t merely muscle men with guns.
Anyway, Swarm infiltrates MJ’s theatre spies on her for a while before initiating his attack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should be noted that MJ was unfamiliar with Swarm and his abilities; at least to my knowledge.
MJ orders everyone to run (which they barely do) but one of the actors attacks Swarm and slows him down slightly.
Tumblr media
MJ (correctly) presumes Swarm will follow her and leads him towards a curtain that she then uses to further slow him down before activating the sprinklers.
Tumblr media
This deals with most of the insects but Swarm’s reanimated skeleton still comes after her.
Tumblr media
Thankfully MJ’s co-star smashes its head in saving her. They depart to find MJ’s bodyguards because Swarm is already starting to reconstitute himself.
Tumblr media
Unlike most of the other examples we’ve looked at so far, Mary Jane was totally surprised by this attack, had no knowledge about her opponent to draw from, no immediate weapons to use and given little time to react.
Under these circumstances her actions are undeniably remarkable, showcasing her experience, quick wits and resourcefulness.
However she still required assistance from her co-star, bodyguards and was lucky enough to be near enough to useful resources to draw upon. If there was no curtain, no sprinkler system or water she would’ve been unable to fight back successfully.
H.Y.D.R.A.
There are many more instances after this of Mary Jane defending her self and others. Most of them occur in stories that for various reasons are just generally problem riddled and illogical. Although that doesn’t necessarily apply to whenever MJ kicks butt within them.
These range from examples similar to the above, instances where MJ has temporary super powers, access to higher technology (like web-shooters or Iron Man style tech) or contacts within the super hero community she can call upon as back up.
An example of the latter can be found in Invincible Iron Man #600 where MJ and Tony Stark’s mother find themselves invaded by HYDRA soldiers. Mary Jane however had pre-emptively contacted several super heroes to help her. These included Ironheart/Riri Williams and Miles Morales/Spider-Man
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will concede the latter example is a questionable source to cite given how it is not a Spider-Man comic book, To my knowledge, at the time of this writing the events from it have yet to be referenced in any comic book under the control of the Spider-Man editorial office. However at the time it was the title Mary Jane predominantly appeared in, so we could perhaps call it food for thought.
Subway Troll
The other examples from this era are mostly redundant for various reasons so I shall just skip ahead to something more recent.
In Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man v2 #11 MJ has one of her finest hours. The story begins with MJ helping an exhausted and injured Spider-Man to bed, affirming that she will make sure the city won’t need him that day.
Tumblr media
This affirms for the readers that whatever unfolds in the issue, Mary Jane is committed to not involving Peter for his own sake.*
Later, whilst riding the subway, MJ recognizes a doctor in her carriage, shortly before the train collides with a literal troll monster; it was something to do with Thor, don’t worry about it.
MJ immediately takes charge. She orders the doctor to tend to injured passengers. She checks on the driver and assesses the danger. She rallies passengers off the train, helps move the injured, guides them to safety in the tunnels and even goes back to try and distract the troll.
Noticeably Mary Jane recognizes her own limitations. She has no delusions about actually defeating the troll, her plan is to simply distract it then hide; she even implies doing anything else would be stupid (see above).
Tumblr media
By chance, Miles Morales shows up to fight the troll.
Tumblr media
MJ sidesteps one of the troll’s blows, one possibly intended to throw off Miles rather than aimed at her. Seeing the young Spider-Hero smacked around, MJ  immediately tries to help him.
Tumblr media
Asking him to keep the troll distracted she boards the train again, deduces the troll would be vulnerable to light and then ignites the train’s lamps. She proceeds to yell for Miles to attack whilst it’s blinded. This brings the creature down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once the troll is down MJ calls her old boss Tony Stark so he can arrange for the creature to be taken away.
Tumblr media
As I said, it’s one of MJ’s finest hours. She’s smart, in control, resourceful, fearless and undeniably a protector figure. A hero for sure.
But not a super powered one.
By her own admission her best bet was to just hide and hope the creature wouldn’t find her. The resolution of the battle was dependent upon the lucky appearance of Miles Morales in tandem with her opponent having a very specific weakness and the presence of resource that happened to work against that weakness.
Limitations
I will admit that maybe I’ve overlooked something, and would be willing to be told otherwise. But it is my contention that between all the above examples we get a strong overview of how MJ can handle situations where she needs to protect herself or others.
And that overview reveals that Mary Jane has a truly heroic soul.
She’s brave, protective and selfless.
But she also has limits.
Whenever she finds herself (or others) under attack the instances where she outright wins are actually very few and far between.
Whilst they exist, instances like her defeat of the Chameleon are in fact the exception not the rule.
The overwhelming majority of the time MJ’s victories are earned via assists. Either she is assisting someone (she defeated Hobgoblin’s guard because Harry held his attention) or more typically she is herself being assisted (see every single time Spider-Man showed up).*
In any situation though Mary Jane’s abilities to protect herself and others is heavily reliant upon a large number of factors. The resources in her vicinity, how her opponent(s) view her, the skillset of the people around her, how many opponents she is up against, the strengths and weaknesses of said opponents and a heaping helping of sheer luck.
These factors are so significant that often in any of the scenarios listed above were any one of them removed or significantly altered against MJ’s favour she (or others) would almost certainly have been seriously harmed.
If Hal didn’t have his camera and it didn’t happen to go off and if the demons didn’t happen to be weak to light she and her companions would  have died
If MJ wasn’t armed with the baseball bat she likely wouldn’t have defeated Chameleon.
If Swarm wasn’t vulnerable to a sprinkler system he would’ve likely killed MJ or her co-stars.
If Miles Morales didn’t show up she could never have helped bring down the troll.
Because of this Mary Jane cannot reliably  come out on top of most dangerous encounters she might find herself in.
In Spec #245 she defeated someone with (functionally) no enhanced strength, speed, etc. but only when warned of him and armed. However, until given help she couldn’t defeat a regular armed criminal in ASM #261
She subdued a super powered assailant in Sensational v2 #30, but only by using both a nearby resource that happened to exploit his specific weakness, and she still needed an assist. However, with no such weaknesses resources or assistance, she was helpless against a group of normal people with high tech armour and weapons.
In Marvel Knights #12 she temporarily stunned the Green Goblin by surprise attacking him with a gun. However, even when armed, she could do nothing to stop Kaine abducting her
No matter how you slice it Mary Jane cannot justifiably go into the majority of dangerous situations unprepared, or even armed, and presume she will be fine based upon her personal skillset. Her history just doesn’t reflect that at all.
I’m not suggesting MJ is a helpless victim waiting to happen, someone who must be reliant upon luck or other people to save her.
But what I am saying is…she has limits
Limits that common sense and past experience would definitely inform her of.
Limits that in no way shape or form justify her or Peter treating potential threats to her lightly, or presuming she’ll be fine no matter what.
Limits that do not allow her to have a strong probability of keeping herself or anyone else safe in the overwhelming majority of situations.
The more pressing question for this essay series is if her Mysterio and his crew are within her limits?
That’s a question I will be getting to very soon. Because next time I want to take a brief tangent to address a counterpoint you might’ve considered.
Why don’t these limits apply to Spider-Man?
*Whilst this is somewhat reminiscent of ASM #286 (which we looked at in part 17), it should be noted that this time MJ is unaware of any immediate or impending crime/dangerous situation that might unfold.
**I do not care to discuss any social/political implications of this. For example I don’t want to start a debate about Mary Jane’s relationship with the damsel-in-distress trope.
All that is irrelevant in the face of the objective facts of these stories. Of the patterns of behaviour and skills they establish into the canon, and thereby define the characters in question.
Case in point I’d argue it’d be sexist to have She-Hulk fight the Purple Man and lose because he used his powers to compel her to kill herself. Sexist it may be, but that doesn’t change the fact that based upon their established abilities, behaviours and personalities that scenario is both possible and highly likely.
*If you don’t get the reference, MJ once claimed this in MTU #20.
Master Post
Lost looking for something on this blog? This post is for you!
Months listed next to each show/movie/etc. below are those in which they can be found and usually were reblogged a lot.
I don’t always regularly reblog all the shows I watch. I usually do “catch-up” reblogs for many of my shows, so expect occasional mass reblogs (especially at the beginning of a new month).
This post is here to give you an idea of where to search for gifs and photos, etc. of a particular subject on my blog. I’m usually pretty good with tagging everything, but in some cases it may be easier to go through the posts by month instead of by the tags.
It’s also my personal guide to what to reblog in the future, so this post will be updated or reposted whenever I’ve had a lot of activity or it’s a new month.
For the week of 22 July 2019
Quick Bits:
A Walk Through Hell #12 concludes what has been an excellent horror tale from Garth Ennis, Goran Sudžuka, Ive Svorcina, and Rob Steen with another trip into existential terror as we’re given a glimpse of what this is all about and what’s coming.
Action Comics #1013 keeps a lot of plates spinning as it works through elements of “Year of the Villain”, Event Leviathan, the ongoing Invisible Mafia story thread, and the Rose and Thorn revival. It’s kind of impressive as to how it remains entertaining and engrossing with as much going on.
Age of Conan: Bêlit #5 is another ending this week, as we finish off Bêlit’s coming of age origin story, as she confronts the Stygian priest and lays claim to her title of Queen of the Black Coast. Great art from Kate Niemczyk, Scott Hanna, Andrea Di Vito, and Jason Keith.
Amazing Spider-Man #26 introduces us to the new Sinister Syndicate fully as they plan an attack on Boomerang. It’s kind of funny to see him still getting into trouble even now that he’s trying to stay legit. Great art from Kev Walker and Laura Martin.
Ascender #4 gives us a few surprises in the fight between the vampires and the resistance. The grey washes, with mixes of red, from Dustin Nguyen on the vampire’s throneworld is very impressive.
Batgirl #37 launches the new creative team of Cecil Castellucci, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Jordie Bellaire, and AndWorld Design with part one of “Oracle Rising”. There’s a nice battle with Killer Moth, emphasizing what some villains are doing in order to try to get noticed by Luthor to receive the offer, while playing up the expense that goes into crimefighting. Also, the Terrible Trio unleash something probably not too good.
Dark Red #5 concludes the first arc as Chip and Evie try to fight off an army of Nazi vampires. It’s good, with some nice funny moments. Great art from Corin Howell and Mark Englert.
Detective Comics #1008 is a straight-forward single issue story of Batman and Joker at the circus from Peter J. Tomasi, Doug Mahnke, Jaime Mendoza, Dave Baron, and Rob Leigh. It’s a refreshing change of pace from the extended arcs, even as it sets up a new threat in the “Year of the Villain” offering.
Dial H for Hero #5 gets a little meta as we dive into the Multiverse, the Heroverse, and the Bleed from Sam Humphries, Joe Quinones, Scott Hanna, Jordan Gibson, and Dave Sharpe. The use of breaking through panels, reproductions of old comics scenes, and a variation of styles just deliver phenomenal storytelling.
Dungeons & Dragons: A Darkened Wish #2 continues to fill in the backstory of the adventurers’ time with the White Sails, introducing us to the pitfalls that harried them, before giving more hints in the present of the nightmare that tore them apart. B. Dave Walters, Tess Fowler, Jay Fotos, and Neil Uyetake are delivering an entertaining fantasy tale here.
Fearless #1 is a new three-issue anthology mini-series spotlighting a number of the women of Marvel, both characters and creative talent. This first issue leads off with a continuing lead feature from Seanan McGuire, Claire Roe, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Janice Chiang, as Sue Richards, Carol Danvers, and Storm prepare to visit a girls camp as motivational speakers. There’s also an entertaining Mille the Model back-up from Leah Williams, Nina Vakueva, Rosenberg, and Chiang. And a very funny Jessica Jones story from the Captain Marvel team of Kelly Thompson, Carmen Carnero, Tamra Bonvillain, with Chiang. Though short, that last story is pretty much worth the price of the issue alone.
Five Years #3 sees Tambi meet with Ivy and Julie to discuss that various nations around the world are dangerously developing Phi-alloy technology. Also a surprise appearance of people we thought were out. Great art as always from Terry Moore.
The Flash #75 delivers three stories for this extra-sized anniversary issue. The lead concludes the “Year One” arc. This is some of the best art that I have ever seen from Howard Porter, he and Hi-Fi just deliver amazing artwork here. There are also two back-ups, one hinting at things to come in the future for Barry and the other tying in to “Year of the Villain” as Captain Cold receives Luthor’s offer.
Guardians of the Galaxy #7 begins the second arc, “Faithless”, from Donny Cates, Cory Smith, David Curiel, and Cory Petit. It really introduces us to the new Universal Church of Truth as they take out an entire squadron of the Nova Corps and then worse things happen as the Guardians go off to investigate. I love the name for the Guardians’ new ship and that final page is one hell of a shock.
History of the Marvel Universe #1 is an interesting project from Mark Waid, Javier Rodríguez, Álvaro López, and Joe Caramagna. It’s framed as Galactus telling Franklin Richards (at least I think that’s Franklin Richards) the history of the universe before it dies and the next is reborn. As expected, it’s dry facts, but it’s fascinating in how it’s comprehensively presented and the artwork from Rodríguez and López is jaw-dropping gorgeous. There are also annotations in the back to show where these events come from. It’s well put together and I highly recommended it to die-hard Marvel fans.
Invisible Kingdom #5 concludes the first arc with an almost entirely one-sided battle between the Sun Dog and a Lux battleship. G. Willow Wilson, Christian Ward, and Sal Cipriano elevate the tension nicely through this issue and give a few surprises when everything seems grim and it looks like the end.
Killer Groove #3 wonderfully showcases one of Jackie’s cases as it intertwines with the music scene and criminal underworld. Ollie Masters, Eoin Marron, Jordie Bellaire, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou are doing a nice job with this series of crafting one larger story out of many separate smaller tales.
Lazarus: Risen #2 is another dense read. The series has always been hefty, but this new format has elevated things further, doubling up comics content and adding a prose short story, the letters pages, and extra content like gaming material and the usual in-world advertisements. I’m loving it. Greg Rucka, Michael Lark, Tyler Boss, Santi Arcas, Simon Bowland, Adam Christopher, and Crystal Frasier are definitely giving you your money’s worth and more here. Excellent comics content as the war between Carlyle and Morray/D’Souza heats up.
Livewire #8 pits Amanda versus Jada for a final round. It’s still interesting how practically everyone is trying to portray Amanda’s actions as harmful and villainous. Great art from Kano.
Martian Manhunter #7 sees J’onn and Diane uncover some of the results of the experiments that have been going on with the kidnapped and missing people, it’s horrifying. Incredible and haunting artwork in this one from Riley Rossmo and Ivan Plascencia.
Marvels: Epilogue is a short, but sweet, coda to the Marvels series from Kurt Busiek, Alex Ross, John Roshell, and Richard Starkings. It spotlights events from X-Men #98 through the eyes of Phil Sheldon and his daughters, capturing some of the awe, wonder, and terror that Sheldon experienced during the main series. The book is filled out with an interview with Busiek and Ross on their experience with the series and what it’s like to look back on it 25 years later, as well as interviews with the editors who worked on the book.
Middlewest #9 sets out a new quest for Abel as he comes across the Nowak people. Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos are continuing to make magic with this series. The art is beautiful and the story is endlessly captivating.
Psi-Lords #2 continues to investigate these four captives, changed for whatever reason by the Psi-Lords, and the habitat of their prison. An interesting jail hierarchy of gangs is revealed and a bit of a memory of the four’s lives before being captured. Gorgeous art from Renato Guedes.
Star Pig #1 is weird. Very weird. Delilah S. Dawson, Francesco Gaston, Sebastian Cheng, and Shawn Lee give us the story of a kid on her way to space camp whose ship is struck and destroyed by an asteroid, saved by a space pig and a scavenger energy ball. It’s probably one of the more unique tales I’ve seen in a while.
Sword Master #1, like Aero before it, features two stories. In the first, Greg Pak adapts into English a tale from Shuizhu and Gunji of the titular hero, Lin Lie, and his quest to find his missing father. It’s an interesting start and the artwork from Gunji is gorgeous. The back up original story pairs Shang-Chi up with Lin in a story from Greg Pak, Ario Anindito, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Travis Lanham. It follows up on their appearance in the New Agents of Atlas tie-in to “War of the Realms” and presents an interesting antagonist on their trail.
Valkyrie #1 is a wonderful debut from Jason Aaron, Al Ewing, CAFU, Jesus Aburtov, and Joe Sabino. We get some continued supporting cast from Jane Foster’s time as Thor, although with a new status quo, and an interesting hook in trying to track down Dragonfang, the former Valkyrie’s sword. The art from CAFU and Aburtov is beautiful.
The Weatherman Vol. 2 #2 gives us more of a look at the nightmare that has consumed Earth as the crew attempt to find the doctor who might be able to fix everything. It goes about as well as could be expected. The monster designs and execution from Nathan Fox and Moreno Dinisio are incredible.
Wonder Woman #75 continues “Return of the Amazons” from G. Willow Wilson, Xermanico, Jesus Merino, Vicente Cifuentes, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Pat Brosseau. This arc basically brings Wilson’s run around full circle to deal with some of the elements that kicked off her first issue as Diana faces off against Grail. Some really nice double page spreads with border art from Xermanico.
TV Review: The Flash (Spoilers)
Tumblr media
Season 5, Episode 9: Elseworlds - Part 1
Spoiler Warning: I am posting this review the day the episode becomes available to stream online so if you haven’t seen it yet or are waiting for the entire crossover to air before watching then don’t read on until you have done that.
Overview:
Tumblr media
I cannot tell you how much I got a kick out of this episode. I have not done any TV reviews for a while because of my university commitments but I did partially review Crisis on Earth-X last year and wanted to review this crossover because of what is promised but also because it’s the big superhero event on the small screen. I love an elseworlds story in any genre and show/movie that I watch, I love it when they do parallel worlds and alternate realities, I love it when they have dream worlds and any situation or story where the characters we know and love are portrayed differently. This wasn’t exactly that, but it was still so good. I loved the comedy, the Easter Eggs, the callbacks to previous seasons and the change in dynamic, but also I LOVED the new additions to the Arrowverse and will be talking about them down below.
Freaky Sunday:
So I was going to call this a Freaky Friday before thinking it would be funnier to say Freaky Monday but then realized this episode would have aired yesterday so am calling it a Freaky Sunday. Anyway the movie I am parodying is referenced by Barry because of the situation that he and Oliver find themselves in at the start of this episode.
At the very start of this episode we have that same clip that played at the end of Supergirl, Arrow and The Flash last week, so this is now the fourth time I saw it, which shows John Wesley Shipp’s Flash who he portrayed nearly 30 years ago struggling over a warzone of Easter-Eggs, I mean dead heroes, and speeding away from a weird man with a destiny changing book. This man is called The Monitor and I will talk about him when he is focused on more.
Tumblr media
Fortunately this isn’t all of the opening scene otherwise I would have been very annoyed and the rest is Oliver waking up in Barry’s bed with Barry’s wife Iris calling him for breakfast. Oliver is now Barry Allen and has his life including speed, wife, friends and most likely job. The interesting thing is even though this an obvious re-written reality, the same storylines that have been happening in all seasons are still going on. So Oliver has just got out of prison, joined the SCPD as a vigilante and now finds himself as Barry Allen the Scarlet Speedster of Central City. It was funny watching him grasp this realization and to be fair to Stephen Amell he does allow himself to have some much needed fun this episode after all the doom and gloom he has been through this season.
However, because he’s new to the speedster game, he almost screws up in thwarting a robbery attack on Ivo Laboratories. Whether or not this new reality created Ivo Laboratories in Central City or not isn’t confirmed but this is a place that has never been mentioned in previous episodes.
Tumblr media
Regardless, despite giving the wrong vigilante line before stopping the bad guys, he does stop them with an impressive trick shot of his lightning throw. How he knew how to do that without guidance is a mystery but I digress. Also for any comic-book fan that knows Ivo is a reference to Professor Anthony Ivo, they’ll know the robot Oliver’s lightning bolt accidentally hits.
But then we arrive at S.T.A.R. Labs, which has not changed, and Oliver is scanned for abnormalities I’m presuming because his takedown of the bad guys was unlike Barry’s normal quality, yet to all the brilliant minds in that room, as well as Iris and Ralph, no one can deduce that Oliver is not Barry. Oliver and Barry are the only two on their Earth that seem to not have had their memories affected by this altered reality...so naturally Oliver goes to find Barry to try and make sense of the situation.
We then cut to Star City and Barry seems to have woken up in the middle of a sparring match with Diggle at ARGUS. I have to say, I am slightly confused about John’s position at ARGUS, I know Lyla is the director but does that make John the Deputy or Acting Director as Lyla never really seems to be there?
Anyway, Dig thinks Barry is Oliver and Barry knows he is Barry but when he discovers his body has been changed by this altered reality due to his tattoos, he too suspects something is up. However there isn’t time to contemplate this fully like Oliver did because he is told to suit up as Green Arrow is needed on an ARGUS mission...Green Arrow who was almost arrested last week for being an active vigilante before joining the police force as their agent is suddenly allowed to join ARGUS in a mission...logic!
Tumblr media
As with Oliver, Barry takes to his new vigilante fighting skills rather well, possibly because the basis of vigilantism is training in fighting and coordination, but after subduing the threat he and Diggle are sped away by Oliver. Diggle throwing up after speeding is still funny but just seems like it is in there as a cheap Easter Egg.
Somehow ditching Diggle, Oliver and Barry go to the disused Arrowcave which made a return last week and while Oliver has his serious face on trying to understand their current predicament, Barry is weightlifting up that old bar pole that my sister used to get a kick out of every time Oliver used it...Barry has used that pole before and with super speed so has done it better than how he is doing it now so why he was so happy with it I don’t know.
Tumblr media
I did like how Oliver was trying to get Barry to be serious because it is very telling of the tone the two shows have. Arrow has always been rather dark and like a Batman story whereas The Flash has always been more like a Marvel Movie or Superman pre-DCEU. However on this point I have to say I was on Oliver’s side because the situation is these two are currently not themselves and Oliver wants his life back, funnily enough after Oliver lets slip he woke up with Iris that morning Barry gets his serious face on.
Tumblr media
This early mid-section of the episode is where I lose a lot of respect for Team Flash because they know of the multiverse, time travel and Flashpoint yet they don’t quite grasp the fact that maybe something happened to change reality so that Barry is now Oliver and Oliver is now Barry...none of them, you have a biochemist, a mechanical engineer, two detectives and a journalist yet no one has the perception to even conceive that what two people they know rather well is telling them is a possibility?
Also, when this is all over and fixed and Oliver is Oliver and Barry is Barry, Iris needs to sit down with Oliver and talk out their differences because I did not know Iris had this much dislike for Oliver. I can’t even call it dislike because she must like him on some level, I mean she openly admitted to fancying either him as Oliver or the Green Arrow during the Invasion! crossover but here, because of what has happened to Oliver recently, she cannot seem to get her head around loving Barry as Oliver because the Oliver she knows who in actual reality is at this point her Barry is a man of pain and vengeance. I do like how this is picked up with the two guys later but I’m getting ahead of myself. Iris needs to sort herself out.
Because of Iris distrusting this situation she drugs the man she supposedly loves while Ralph knocks out the man he believes is Oliver and they are locked in a cell in the Pipeline. I love the fact that because they’re not really catching Metahumans of the week anymore these crossovers are really the only time we see the inside of these cells.
I love how Barry and Oliver interact in this episode and the prison scene is one of my favourites because they have to play to each-other’s strengths due to the fact they have each-other’s abilities. Barry dislocating his thumb was hilarious not just because of how it looked but also because Oliver was so blahzay in telling him to do it just like it was a walk in the park. “Just break your thumb, your body has been conditioned by Anatoly in this reality so you can do it”. Also Oliver’s reaction to actually seeing a broken thumb was slightly bizarre because surely he would have seen his own thumb before. Oliver phasing through the door was slightly overkill because he hasn’t found the breaks on his speed yet, also why was everyone so confused by phasing in this episode? It’s a cool power to have, it can get you out of prison cells, or stop a plane from crashing into buildings. One thing I didn’t understand is Barry said the cell was designed to dampen powers so how was Oliver able to phase?
Anyway regardless of continuity errors they escape and plan to use the only interdimensional extrapolater they have left, despite Sherloque breaking it I’m guessing they fixed it, to go to Earth Thirty-Eight to get Kara’s help. Iris apparently predicts this and beats them to getting the extrapolater...incase anyone isn’t paying attention I don’t like Iris in this episode, I don’t know why but something about her just seems off.
Barry however finally manages to get through to his wife by recalling a memory only they would know and finishing it off by calling her his lightning rod, which he told Oliver to call her and he called stupid, and agree I agree with him. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for sentiment but I never understood the lightning rod metaphor. I guess it’s how lightning conducts to the rod as an analogy for how Barry would always return to Iris but it just never sat right with me. It does with Iris though and she gives Barry the extrapolater and they go to Earth-38.
I laughed with joy at this moment and this scene because entering Earth-38 the episode has Remy Zero’s “Save Me”, also known as the Smallville theme song playing over it. Anyone who keeps up to date with behind the scenes gossip knows they were using the Kent Farm from Smallville as the Kent Farm for Earth-38′s Smallville but with the theme song playing and I think even the tractor is the same. Although on Riverdale last week they also used the Kent Farm in another capacity so maybe the CW, which broadcasts all the DC shows and Riverdale like that set, I know I do. It’s such a feel-good nostalgia trip seeing it. Also that song, I just love it!
Tumblr media
We are reacquanted with Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent and, despite not appearing in Season 3 of Supergirl he did easily slide back into the role. I mentioned in my first reaction to seeing Tyler Hoechlin as Superman that I was won over by the acting and look just the choices taken by costuming threw me. Here we see more of Clark Kent then we do Superman and for me it works. However my biggest issue right now is if they are trying to make out as if this Superman is the same one we saw the origin story for during Smallville played there by Tom Welling. With the theme song playing and the same farm being used it does seem that way. I would be very happy if ti wasn’t as that would obviously mean this Supergirl is the same that Laura Vandervoot portrayed and her Kara was more evolved as a superhero than this Kara.
Tumblr media
Also, we meet this Earth’s Lois Lane, portrayed by Elizabeth Tulloch. I like her as Lois Lane, I think she has the same level of drive and bite as Erica Durance and Teri Hatcher did in the role and isn’t as wet and dull as Amy Adams. Interestingly enough when it comes to Superman mythos, the small screen seems to get right what the movies get wrong.
Tumblr media
Kara is visiting her cousin after being fired from the D.E.O. and is debating whether or not she should have revealed her identity to Clark looking I guess for justification in her decision, Clark obviously tells her she did the right thing because secret identities are there to keep loved ones safe and that is obviously the right thing to do.
Tumblr media
Barry and Oliver arrive giving Lois a fright but it seems whatever alternate reality was put in place only affected Earth-1 because Kara still knows them as themselves. Barry and Oliver are formally introduced to Superman at both are a little bit starstruck but handle it in different ways fitting their characters.
Tumblr media
Then when it comes to Barry and Oliver training as each other, Barry has to target practice while Oliver runs at him being a moving target.
Tumblr media
The only issue with this setup is while is it is done to make an excellent callback to when Oliver trained Barry, Oliver still thinks he is training Barry here and gets very offended when Barry doesn’t take playing him seriously.
Tumblr media
Lois is great in this scene as the impartial spectator and calls it how she sees it calling Oliver a dick. Hilarious.
Barry and Oliver then have a heart-to-heart and discover that in order to be each-other they need to embody what makes each other work as vigilantes, Barry is very light-hearted and positive whereas Oliver is very grounded and serious. So for Barry to be the Green Arrow effectively he needs to be grounded and serious while Oliver being The Flash needs to be upbeat. As I said before I love the meta referencing of how the two shows and characters are so different from each other yet exist in the same space, then Kara comes along who is a bit of both, it’s the trinity right here. DC’s original Trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman has been made DOA thanks to the movies so the small-screen has a new trinity of Green Arrow, Flash and Supergirl.
Tumblr media
Cisco arrives and tells the group that they need to come back to stop A.M.A.Z.O. and both Kara and Clark tag along for the ride, with Cisco finally meeting Superman.
Ambushing A.M.A.Z.O:
Tumblr media
Back on Earth-1 and sure enough A.M.A.Z.O. makes his debut as these crossover events need badly CG’d robots in them. A.M.A.Z.O. as his comic-book counterpart does, is a robot who mimics powers so as he battles he just gets stronger. Here this is done through displaying symbols of each person mimicked on his chest...the only issue with this is while I understand Killer Frost’s symbol I do not get Vibe’s.
After having their asses handed to them, Cisco decides they need Oliver and Barry, but Iris says she let them go due to believing their story and Cisco goes along with it going to Earth-38 to get them. Whether or not the extrapolator knew where Kara was and so ported Oliver and Barry there is one thing but how did Cisco know where they were? I guess he vibed them but it is never shown.
Tumblr media
After returning with Barry, Oliver, Kara and Clark what follows is an amazing battle and it’s only the first part of the crossover. Okay yes the CG on A.M.A.Z.O. is shoddy but so was the CG on Red Tornado and Metallo last year, here the focus is really on Barry and Oliver working as Green Arrow and Flash respectively.
Tumblr media
They figure out a plan that includes the Super-Cousins as they are used essentially as battering rams to hold A.M.A.Z.O. in place, I am just thrilled to finally see at least 2 members of the original Justice League working side-by-side, I know Martian Manhunter is coming up most likely in the Supergirl part so I cannot wait for that.
Tumblr media
Team Flash acquire a virus that would destroy A.M.A.Z.O. because turning him off manually has been made impossible. In order to install the virus, Barry had to shoot the virus at A.M.A.Z.O. but to make sure he couldn’t phase it through, Oliver had to counteract his phasing. So you had Barry waiting for the right shot while the other three held him in place. They succeed and, after a familiar line from the Green Arrow, A.M.A.Z.O. is no more.
Future Repercussions:
Tumblr media
This part got me excited, this was Iris, coming round to the idea that Barry is actually Barry, and warning him not to turn into Oliver. Again the girl has some sort of issue with Oliver being dark and miserable all the time and while Barry is playing Green Arrow for the moment, doesn’t want him to become Oliver.
This got me thinking, what if the events of this crossover have a lasting effect on the future of the Arrowverse? What if by learning how to be each other’s vigilante personas, both Barry and Oliver are changed when they return to their respective personas? I would love this crossover to make that possible as I feel it would make both series’ more compelling going forward.
Preluding the Bat:
Tumblr media
So at the end of the episode, Cisco mentions a scattered vibe he had earlier in the episode of this mysterious figure who we know as The Monitor. Again I won’t go into much detail here because we are not given much as is but the vibe shows him with this lecturer John Deagan who he gave this all powerful reality writing book to and caused the events of this crossover.
Tumblr media
While no one else really knows who the men are, Oliver spotted a key fact as to where they are, a Wayne Enterprises building...tomorrow’s Part 2 episode will bring about Gotham City and more importantly Batwoman who is seen atop a rooftop from a far distance but it is definitely her. I cannot wait!
Easter-Eggs:
So many Easter-Eggs and this is only episode 1. We see a barrage of dead heroes in that opening scene, these include Captain Cold, either Jesse Quick or Speedy, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, The Ray and a Green Arrow who is in the Green Arrow suit used in Smallville.
Tumblr media
Smallville is an Easter-Egg cache of itself here due to that cameo plus the theme song and the farm all being used, most likely just fan-service but I loved it.
I don’t really want to rate the separate parts of the crossover and will rate the whole thing at the end of the event but I think this is a great start to the crossover and I cannot wait for Part 2.
So that’s my review of Elseworlds - Part 1, what did you guys think? Post your comments and check out more DC TV Reviews and well as other TV Reviews and posts.
Grab-it Novels: Suicide Squad #9
Tumblr media
Welcome, everyone, to the inaugural post of Grab-it Novels, a weekly review blog where we talk about one of the awesome comics I’ve read this week. And the first comic we’re taking a look at is Suicide Squad #9, written by Robbie Thompson, with art by Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira and Dexter Soy, and Marcelo Maiolo on colors.
Solicitations:
Amanda Waller needs one last item before she can begin her invasion of Earth-3. The problem? It’s locked in a vault on Oa. The solution? SQUAD IN SPACE! Meanwhile, Rick Flag is assembling his OWN Squad to take down Waller!
The Cover:
It’s a pretty good cover that does its job, convening the whole ‘Suicide Squad in space’ thing that this story arc has going for it. But you can always tell more about a character through small facial expressions. Sure, Nocturna has a neutral expression and you can’t tell Talon’s with his mask on. But you got Major Force being all serious, Culebra looking really out of her depth, and Match...well, Match looks confused and unsure, which sort of...well, matches with what he’s been going through later.
I’m also a sucker for the color green, so the green hue shining out from the off-cover lantern-like foe is a nice touch.
The Story So Far:
Amanda Waller has decided to stop playing by the rules, and has started acting even crueler and more malicious than ever before. This included locking Rick Flag up in Belle Reeve, and recruiting several unusual candidates for the Suicide Squad. This included Peacemaker, and someone who we thought was Conner Kent AKA Superboy.
But a series of recent events have ended up shaking the squad to its core. First off, due to crossover shenanigans, Rick Flagg managed to escape from Belle Reeve, and Peacemaker was freed of his neck bomb by the new Swamp Thing. However, the biggest revelation happened to Superboy, who came into contact with...Conner Kent AKA Superboy. As it turns out, the Superboy we were following in the book was Match, a bizarro clone of Superboy. And naturally, learning that he’s a copy of a copy kind of screwed with Match’s mental state.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Amanda Waller activated a teleporter, bringing her team and their HQ to an unmarked island. So now, Task Force X are now rogue agents under Waller’s sway rather than working for the government.
Why is Waller doing all this? Well, anyone who read the Future State issues from earlier this year should know; Waller’s plan is to conquer Earth-3 and turn it into a utopia, no matter the cost. So far, she’s sent the Squad to hell (where they ended up battling the Hell Squad) to gather magic from the Rock of Eternity.
What lengths will Waller go to? How far will she drive Task Force X? And can Rick Flag’s own Suicide Squad put a stop to her? And more importantly, who else is gonna die?
Synopsis:
So we start the issue on Task Force Island. And after Waller is informed that a number of her black site prisons have been compromised, she gets to work sending the Suicide Squad on their next mission.
Tumblr media
After a two-page spread (that’s probably also an Armageddon reference), we actually see Rick Flag’s own Suicide Squad in the making, which includes Flash villain Mirror Master, Lor-Zod, Wonder Woman’s nemesis Cheetah, and a parademon named Ghkeyy’t. This group treks through the Atlantic ocean to recruit his creepy dude called Fisherman.
Tumblr media
Yikes! And of course, this guy has a grudge against Amanda Waller. Who doesn’t?
As Waller’s squad gets ready for the mission and then launches into space, we get some nice bits of character from the different squadmates. Major Force being a major dick, Ambush Bug doing some fourth-wall-breaking shenanigans, and it seems that Nocturna is trying to groom Match into a better hero (though we do know that it's so that he can potentially free them from Waller’s grasp).
Tumblr media
The best bit is between Culebra and Talon. During the last mission to hell, Culebra was killed, and her soul was sent straight to hell. When the squad managed to escape, Culebra basically became a zombie. And naturally, learning that you were bad enough to deserve eternal damnation when you were the light-hearted comic relief is quite the emotional blow. But William Cobb AKA Talon, not only comforts Culebra, but also lets her in that he and Dr. Rodrigues are working with Rick Flag from the inside to take Waller down.
Now, just where has the squad been sent to? None other than Oa, home of the Green Lantern Corps...and Christ, has it seen better days. According to the editorial notes, the Central Battery blew up in the second issue of the newest volume of Green Lantern.
Tumblr media
(Don’t ask me; the last Green Lantern-related book I read was Far Sector.)
The Squad then heads down into the waters of Oa, down towards the Sciencells. Naturally, they end up having to fight a giant space tentacle monster. However, because the Suicide Squad consistently has the worst luck ever, they also end up having to battle Jo Mullein, the newest Green Lantern and the star of Far Sector. Didn’t expect to see her show up in a Suicide Squad comic.
Tumblr media
While this craziness is going on, Ambush Bug and Major Force arrive in the Sciencells and break out...this creepy bird skull guy in an astronaut costume.
Tumblr media
The Squad manages to escape thanks to Nocturna manipulating the space tentacle beast (whose name is Yehdioag, by the way). They return to their ship with the bird skull guy, Yorick, telling them that he’s making modifications to their ship for ‘the coming danger.’ Oh, and remember how I said the Suicide Squad has terrible luck? Well, the issue ends with a bunch of Thanagarians arriving right out of nowhere and blowing up their ship.
Tumblr media
So business as usual for the Suicide Squad.
Thoughts:
I’ll fully admit that I was pretty late to pick up Robbie Thompson’s run, but Caped-Joel’s videos managed to get me interested in the book, and it did not disappoint.
Ambush Bug is kind of hit or miss with his humor, but his interactions with Major Force were kind of amusing. But the biggest draw for me continues to be all the stuff involving Match, and now, we got some pathos going on with Culebra. And you got the ongoing build-up towards Amanda Waller and Rick Flag coming to blows.
Seeing Jo was a nice surprise, even though it was just a cameo. And I am curious about what Yorick’s deal is.
The artwork by Eduardo Pansica and Julio Ferreira continues to be great, having a similar solidity similar to Eddy Burrows, with each character looking distinct and recognizable. The coloring makes the book pleasant to look at, with the shading making the underwater scenes particularly distinct.
Dexter Soy’s artwork for the second half is a bit more stylized, but it’s still got a good sense of solidity that matches the art from the first half.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
Robbie Thompson’s Suicide Squad continues to be a fun and interesting book with some really good twists, characters, and art. If you want a consistently enjoyable book, give it a grab.
Master Post
Lost looking for something on this blog? This post is for you!
Months listed next to each show/movie/etc. below are those in which they can be found and usually were reblogged a lot.
I don’t always regularly reblog all the shows I watch. I usually do “catch-up” reblogs for many of my shows, so expect occasional mass reblogs (especially at the beginning of a new month).
This post is here to give you an idea of where to search for gifs and photos, etc. of a particular subject on my blog. I’m usually pretty good with tagging everything, but in some cases it may be easier to go through the posts by month instead of by the tags.
It’s also my personal guide to what to reblog in the future, so this post will be updated or reposted whenever I’ve had a lot of activity or it’s a new month.
list of verses i have on mick for my own benefit, because i’m struggling to remember them all right now, lol
1. Main (anything taking place in the time frame of The Flash or Legends, or any of the crossover episodes on other shows).
2. Childhood (anything taking place with Mick being from infancy to about 13)
3. Teenager (anything 13-18, usually encompassing his time spent in juvie and trying to stay alive)
4. Pre-series (anything from the age of 19 up to the canon timeline of the television programmes; generally encompasses his growing partnership with Len and slow rise to becoming a well-known criminal)
5. Earth X (Mick, known to friends as Mickey, and his place on the Freedom Fighters; or his journey to eventually ending up there)
6. Earth 2 (firefighter/fire chief Mick)
7. Baker (what it says on the tin; AU where Mick is a baker)
8. Florist (also an AU except he’s a florist in this one)
9. Demon (demon Mick, demon Miiiiick)
10. Vampire (this is becoming self explanatory)
11. Werewolf (seriously self explanatory)
12. Prison Break (AU where Mick is in Fox River for arson, murder, and thievery; dependent on partner, he’s either attempting to get Michael to let him get in on the break-out on the assumption Leonard isn’t in the picture, or slowly planning a break-out with Leonard)
13. The OA (AU taking place in the world of the Netflix show, The OA)
14. Blind (Mick is blind and hates being dependent on other people because of course he does; usually has a guide dog)
15. RENT (Mick is living in New York during the 1980s AIDS crisis while Leonard is suffering from aforementioned AIDS and Sara is a drug addict because why not throw all my characters and Christina’s into RENT AUs)
16. Fatherhood (is it a good idea for Mick to have kids? no. did he anyway? in this verse he did. encompasses any relationship but primarily is Mick and Sara, or Mick and Leonard, or all three in a poly relationship)
17. Chronos (any thread with Mick as Chronos)
18. Mutant (AU where Mick is a metahuman/mutant; generally has fire powers but it is subject to whatever I fancy at the time; often meshes with a ‘circus au’ of sorts in that Mick usually ends up in a circus bc of course he does)
19. Barbarian/slave/tribal stuff (closed verse with @theirvoices where Mick is a desert barbarian captured by a prince and imprisoned there)
20. Cousins (closed verse with @revivedlegend where Mick is the cousin of several of my other muses and the shenanigans ensue oh boy)
21. Military (Mick is in the military a la his father, either bc of his father and he never ended up in prison, or bc... au... idk okay if he’s in the military it goes in this dumbass verse)
22. Sloth/Seven Sins (closed group verse that doesn’t exist anymore where Mick was basically the incarnation of Sloth bc of course)
23. There’s probably mroe but I gotta go on an apartment tour in like five minutes so I’m going to just post this in case my computer crashes so i don’t lose it and continue it later bc I KNOW IM MISSING SOMETHING
The Flash - Crisis on Earth X - Part 3
Part 3 of a four part crossover. A few of my thoughts as they occurred. Let’s begin…not now…ok, now.
Our heroes start out in a concentration camp on Evil Nazi Earth. How will they escape?!
Pink triangle identifies prisoners as homosexual. The Nazis weren’t big on the gays.
Eobard is still a chode.
Evil Nazi Kara is also a chode.
Why does STAR Labs have giant air ducts?!
I’m pretty sure I have a good idea who the pink triangle guy is, but I won’t spoil it.
Is that Evil Nazi Sara’s Dad?
Oh look, it’s Snart. What’s up, Snart? Haven’t seen you in a while.
Commercial break!
Why did the tower explode when Snart shot it with his cold gun?
Leo Snart?
Pink triangle guy is The Ray. Not really sure about the specifics, but he’s a superhero of some variety.
Ah, the classic villainous monologue. Evil Nazi Kara, you’re so predictable.
Iris and Felicity kickin’ butt and takin’ names.
Why would they have to wait at all for the Legends? THEY HAVE A TIME MACHINE. They should arrive literally 2 seconds after Felicity sent the message.
Ray is from Earth 1. How?
Is that Earth-X Cisco? He looks way different without the long hair...
Commercial break!
Ah, it's Earth-X Wynn. Yeah, that makes way more sense.
Earth-X Wynn is kind of a jerk, which I get, but still.
A doomsday weapon. Why is it always doomsday weapons?
“Cause you’re a crazy old man.” Heeheehee.
All of the feels, right now. All of the feels.
I don’t watch Arrow, but I know a tiny bit. Is Sara’s “Maggie” Nyssa al Ghul?
Snart smooches!
Commercial break!
I wondered why Barry couldn’t just solo the facility. Turns out there’s power dampeners.
Eobard fought Superman.
Evil(er) Nazi Metallo. Is that a British accent?
Commercial break!
Evil Nazi Legends?
Whodat?
Different whodat?! Oh, it’s Red Tornado.Pretty obvious now I think about it.
Commercial break!
How does Eobard make his eyes glow like that?
Evil Nazi Red Tornado kicked Ray and Barry’s butts.
NUUUUUUUUUU! Martin!
THAT WAS A TERRIBLE ENDING! Whatever. Let’s finish this gig over on Legends of Tomorrow.
