The Last Continent

A Rincewind book I don't dislike? Could it be so?

The Last Continent

First Read: Now!

Verdict: This book explained to me why I keep bouncing off Rincewind - a perfectly servicable travelogue of a book, with some good jokes and fun pastiche.

I was, honestly, worried going into Last Continent. Interesting Times was such a mess and a half of a book, and at this point, my "Rincewind is the worst character" bona fides should be well established. But Last Continent was fun! It's a pure parody pastiche, and there's no big lesson about humanity or deep impactful character arcs. But every book can't be a deep philosphical treatise - sometimes you just need a fun beach read.

The Last Continent parodies Australia and Australian movies (Mad Max, Priscilla, more I'm sure that I don't know), but more or less sidesteps the colonialism parts. There are a couple lampshades (like an exchange with the inevitable Dibbler over whether he's "indigenous") to let the reader know that he's intentionally not touching that topic, and while it won't win any diversity awards for that, I much, much prefer this to whatever he thought he was doing in Interesting Times.

Where normally I like to talk mostly about the overarching themes and characterization, there really isn't any here. Except maybe "Wow, there's some crazy weird shit out there, isn't there, Bruce." But instead, we get Rincewind doing a classic travelogue as the A plot, as he is wont to do, while the wizards get to just have fun being themselves and messing shit up for the B plot. It's fun, it's funny, and it's lighthearted. I'd guess after Hogfather & Jingo, Pratchett needed a palette cleanser, and so he went back to his least philosophical or serious character to do it.

But I did get one thing out of it - I finally understand the core of why I dislike the Rincewind books so much. Rincewind is the character Pratchett uses to write in a very specific style, one focused on travel and location and environment rather than character and emotion. It's a classic "eternal hero" book - Rincewind never changes, just the set dressing. And that's just a style of writing that doesn't work for me - I don't want to see exotic locales, I want to explore the human condition. But Last Continent is certainly the best of the Rincewind books so far - with all his human condition and social commentary landing with other characters, he's able to focus Rincewind on a breezy, beach-read style adventure, and the book is much better for that focus.

Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings donates $1.1 billion to charity | Fortune

Netflix’s Reed Hastings didn’t just give a whopping 20% of his net worth to charity with a massive $1.1 billion donation—there’s a major tax consideration

The Netflix cofounder gave 2 million shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a popular charity among tech billionaires.

Last week, Netflix cofounder, executive chairman, and former CEO Reed Hastings gave about 40% of his company stock—worth about $1.1 billion—away as a gift. An SEC filing from Jan. 24 shows Hastings giving the 2 million shares to an unnamed entity. The filing includes a transaction code marked “G,” which indicates a “bona fide gift.”

It’s a stunningly large donation, not just Hastings’s largest ever, but representing something like 20% of his net worth. After this donation, Hastings is worth an estimated $4.1 billion, per Forbes, much of which is tied up in his remaining ownership of just under 3 million Netflix shares through his family trust, worth roughly $1.7 billion.

Hastings, along with his wife, Patty Quillin, has long supported an array of charitable initiatives, including a gift of $120 million to the United Negro College Fund and two historically Black colleges in 2020. Hastings and Quillin have also signed Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge. But because of its structure, this particular contribution likely comes with stunningly large tax savings.

The gift went to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF), a charity geared at addressing systemic inequalities in the Bay Area, a Netflix spokesperson told Bloomberg, which was among the first to report on the donation. The gift will likely be used in the foundation’s initiatives for affordable housing, childhood development, and disaster relief, among other causes.

SVCF is a popular destination for the area’s philanthropic tech billionaires; Twitter founder Jack Dorsey is a donor, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, his wife, have given $1.5 billion to SVCF, Variety reported.

Not only will Mr Netflix catch a huge tax break from this, Silicon Valley Community Foundation is partnered with the British charity, Choose Love, which is named as a dedication to Aleister Crowley, and according to Corporate Watch, has a steady history of suspect financials, interfering in how other countries, like France, handle their immigration, and abuse of its employees. So, right up Reed Hastings' alley. There is NOTHING that the rest of this country can trust about Silicon Valley, which also has a bunch of trafficking scandals within it's halls.

Priscilla M Dorsey

To the Honorable William T Giles, Judge of the District Court of the United States for the Maryland District.

The petition of Sally E Dorsey and Priscilla M Dorsey of Howard County in the said State of Maryland respectfully sheweth that your Petitioners are the lawful and bona fide owners of a negro man, Charles, now about twenty seven years of age, and that your petitioners have owned the said negro as a slave for life for about four years, during all which time the said negro was in the possession of your petitioners until Sunday the second day of September eighteen hundred and sixty, when said negro escaped and ran away from your petitioners, and that your Petitioners have not since recovered possession of their said slave. They further shew that their said slave Charles, is of a dark brown complexion, is twenty seven or twenty eight years of age, about five feet nine or ten inches in height, has rather a bony face, and sings himself a good deal when walking rapidly, has a very large mouth and thick lips.

And your petitioners further shew that they have caused a deposition of a legal, competent and disinterested witness to be taken before Levin Gale Esquire one of the commissioners appointed by this Court, touching your petitioners rights in the premises, and all the facts aforesaid, and which deposition is here with filed.

Your petitioners therefore pray your Honor to consider this their petition and proofs, and if the same shall be satisfactory to your Honor, that you will by order cause a record therefore to be made, and a transcript thereof properly authenticated & c of such record to be delivered to your petitioners, and as in duty bound your Petitioners will conssay & c.
