In August 2014, she joined a mob of 'Palestinian protestors' as they lay down in front of Sainsbury's in Birmingham in objection to the store stocking Israeli goods, forcing the store to close. She later boasted of her actions on Facebook and urged everyone to 'boycott Israel.' She is pictured here holding a banner printed and distributed by an organisation steeped in antisemitism - an organisation known to propagate antisemitism through its liberal use of blatant lies, demeaning the world's only Jewish State. She has just been appointed Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice by Keir Starmer, two of the most important and powerful roles in British Government. Starmer has repeatedly stated that he is committed to stamping out antisemitism - what a great start.

Here's a random assortment of Maximum Ride stuff, mostly images.
Maximum Read poster. This image is very small, sorry. This was part of an American Library Association campaign, probably around 2008 - 2010ish -- these posters were put up in libraries to encourage young people to read. (Description: large text reading Maximum Read at the top. The image shows Max and Angel lying in a field of green grass, with a picnic basket and several books scattered around them. Angel, who is a blonde little girl with white wings, wearing a pink dress and brown jacket, has fallen asleep. Max, a blonde teenager wearing a white long-sleeve shirt and blue jeans, is holding an open book against her chest and looking directly at the viewer.)
There were also bookmarks! (They have a cropped version of the poster image -- the Maximum Read text and Max looking at the viewer / Angel's sleeping face.) This site is the official store of the Ontario Library Association. The listing is live, but I think the OLA mainly deals with libraries and the people who work in them -- if you want to reach out and order 100 bookmarks for 9 dollars CAD, be my guest. But I don't need 100 bookmarks...
The kids who could fly advertising decal. This was a large decal showing an aerial view of a city. Produced just before Max came out by a New Zealand ad company. I've only seen the version of the Max cover that they use here on copies from the UK, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was used other places as well.
BookExpo 2006:
I was too lazy to rip these images off of Flickr, so you'll have to click through. But on May 21, 2006, this Flickr user attended BookExpo 2006, where James Patterson was signing copies of The Angel Experiment. (He didn't have his own table -- he signed at the table belonging to the First Book organization. This is a non-profit that provides books to children; they still exist, and you can read more about them on their website.)
Banners -- and a closer shot. Text (all in all-caps on the actual banner):
The hottest name in kid's fiction. James Patterson. [at left] #1 for 12 weeks New York Times. 500,000 kids demanded it! Max is back! [There is a small image of the School's Out - Forever cover in the center. The background is an image of a pair of white wings.]
Other photos show the JP banner in context -- it was very visible to people as they entered the convention. Here you can see it above a line of people waiting to enter. This photo, I think, shows the reverse side of the banner -- if I am right, the same image was printed on both sides, and it would've been visible as one exited the exhibit hall (as well as when one entered).
There was a long line for the signing. These images are probably not in order, but I tried to sort them. First image. Second image. Third image. All these photos depict a long line of many people, which passes by many booths in a convention hall.
And here is the signing table itself. This image shows the First Book booth, James Patterson seated behind the table with stacks of paperback copies of The Angel Experiment, and a fan talking to him.
Finally, this photo was taken from behind the signing table. Patterson is in the middle of signing a book for a fan, who is using her digital camera to take a picture of him.
Not relevant to anyone but me, really, but my copy of The Angel Experiment is the same vintage as those that Patterson signed that day. Strange to see those books looking brand-new; mine has badly yellowed pages and has been very well-loved over the years.

by Lionel Shriver
Another day, another opportunity for huffy, hypocritical “progressive” posturing. PEN America has now been forced to cancel its World Voices literary festival in New York and L.A., on the heels of also canceling its 2024 awards ceremony. Too many authors had withdrawn from both events to make going ahead with staging either practicable. The reason for so many writers flouncing from these programs? PEN’s failure to publicly denounce Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza. But you had probably guessed the point of indignation already, because as of October 2023, the Anglosphere’s far left has neatly pivoted from the infantilization of black people to the Palestinian cause with the coordinated grace of a synchronized swimmer.
To clarify: the purpose of PEN is to defend freedom of speech and to protect writers from political oppression and persecution. It makes perfect sense, therefore, that a significant cadre of its membership would seek to stifle freedom of speech and engage in political oppression and persecution. Or: we’re all for free speech so long as you say what we tell you. These folks are athletes. It requires considerable intellectual acrobatics for Writers Against the War on Gaza to regard the shutting down of events to advance free expression as “a win for free expression.” Presumably, the fact that a number of withdrawals from both occasions were motivated by fear of being attacked by a mob of pro-Palestinian zealots is also “a win for free expression.” PEN itself stated its concern “about any circumstance in which writers tell us they feel shut down, or that speaking their minds bears too much risk.”
PEN is, by its nature, a big tent. It represents not only Muslim writers but Jewish ones too, some of whom might just support the existence of Israel, might just regard Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza as justified, and might just find alliance with genuinely genocidal terrorists whose unembarrassed aim is to wipe Israel and the Jewish people off the map as a teeny tiny bit obnoxious. While one PEN member decries the nonprofit’s “both-sidesing,” the truth is that PEN has no business taking a position on this issue whatsoever.
Unfortunately, the left has successfully installed the expectation that, regardless of their established purpose, all institutions—companies, museums, theaters, universities, charities, you name it—must proclaim their fealty to the “right” (which is to say left) position on a host of inflammatory issues of the day. This hyper-politicization of entities that ought sensibly to remain politically neutral has been systematically debauching everything from the UK’s National Trust to its NHS, from Anheuser-Busch to the Chicago Art Museum. First, all such outfits were required to fly Black Lives Matter flags, then garishly incoherent Pride flags, and now these banners have all to be swapped out for Palestinian flags, never mind what constituency or customer base might be alienated by this gratuitously partisan branding. Thus, an organization established for the defense of free speech of every sort—including the overtly Zionist kind—is necessarily obliged to openly advocate for Hamas, a murderous, cheerfully antisemitic cult whose interest in free speech on its home turf would fit in a thimble.
Of course, PEN’s membership has form when it comes to hypocrisy. In 2015, under armed security, PEN awarded its Freedom of Expression Courage Award to the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo. Six writers withdrew from participating in the proceedings to protest the magazine’s ostensibly offensive printing of cartoons that depicted Muhammad. Yet funnily enough, what your average normal person found offensive was the vicious massacre of 12 of the publication’s employees, most of them journalists, for neglecting to adhere to one religion’s hysterical blasphemy laws in a secular country that famously celebrates liberté. Yet over 200 writers—including, to my astonishment, the likes of Joyce Carol Oates—signed an open letter to PEN criticizing the Charlie Hebdo award. For these authors, defense of free speech, promotion of tolerance, and opposition to violent political oppression—the very purpose of PEN—counted for nothing when weighed against any injury to the delicate feelings of fundamentalist Muslims.
Much has been written about the unholy, and in some ways, hilarious alliance developing between the progressive left and Islam (Lesbians for Palestine, etc.). But for Western writers to embrace a restrictive, prescriptive, and stifling culture isn’t merely ironic or comical; it’s self-defeating. One needn’t consult a professor of Middle Eastern studies to conclude that these fair-weather friends in Gaza may welcome useful idiocy, but the permissive ethos of the Anglo left is diametrically at odds with despotic Islamic theology. Moreover, for American writers to express increasingly shrill and little-disguised hostility to Jews is to disavow a substantial chunk of the country’s distinguished literary canon: Philip Roth, Saul Bellow, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Bernard Malamud, and Elie Wiesel just for starters.
But then, the past 15 years have demonstrated with depressing clarity that writers, along with artists of every stripe, aren’t special. Although our occupation is more at risk from censorship than most, we’re all too capable of perversely embracing suppressive viewpoints that violate our own interest. We’re paid not only to write but to think, yet we don’t think; we listen keenly for whatever tune is playing in our fellow travelers’ AirPods and whistle along. Apparently, we’re no more creative than the average bear, and as soon as the memo goes out, we’ll chant along with the kiddies camped at Columbia University, “from the river to the sea!” whatever that means. We’ll obediently switch out one cause for another whenever we’re told, as nimbly as using “find and replace” in Microsoft Word.
We’re cowards, conformists, and copycats. Real freedom of expression is too scary; we’d rather hide in a crowd whose keffiyeh-masked members all shout the same thing. PEN has a laudable history of advocating for writers who’ve been persecuted for their opinions in repressive polities—polities much like the contemporary United States. But too many of its members would have the nonprofit corrupt its global mission to protect free speech across the board so long as they can bully its leadership into pointless partisan posturing for progressives’ acrid flavor of the month.

thoughts on uksies sprace, very hyperfixed on them right now
- mystery anon
uksies sprace are FANTASTIC
uk spot is brash and loud and involved, she dresses plainly but makes herself known when she’s in the room, she’s not as much cold-scary as broadway spot as she is aggressive-scary. when jack scabs, she has to be held back by one of her girls from absolutely wrecking him. race is rough and edgy and constantly fighting to be heard, he dresses noticeably fancier than all the other newsies - he has a dang pocket square. he smokes his cigars casually, and he’s physical when he argues - especially with jack - but he’s equally physical when he’s showing affection.
last time i saw the show, during once and for all, race and spot were crouched beside each other when everyone’s crouched with their lanterns, only really looking at each other, faced towards each other close enough that they could lean in and bump their foreheads. when the strike is won, they chest bumped - spot all but threw herself into it, and race seemed all too happy to throw himself right back.
the two of them absolutely have the energy of race having the biggest crush on spot for as long as he knows her but having no idea how to approach it. and spot…sort of knows (maybe needs her girls to help her know) but, regardless, she is absolutely not down for it. race’s interest is pointless at best and destructive at worst, spot can’t risk borough politics getting influenced by some dumb manhattan lieutenant falling over his own feet because he saw a girl. so she ignores all his flirting and teasing with her usual manners, scoffs at him, gives as good as she gets but never lets him get any ideas.
but then, during the strike, she actually gets to know race better than this marginally tense relationship they had before, usually marked by race being painfully awkward in his usual charming attempts when they crossed paths around brooklyn - and, okay, sure, maybe spot has been going to sheepshead more than she used to - but suddenly they’re actually interacting on common ground. and race is serious, focused, devoted, not half-playfully flirting or the worse alternative of trying very hard not to. he does, however, make some dumb joke while they’re working in the basement getting the banners printed, and it makes spot shamelessly snort - loud enough that ritz hushes her - and race knows he’s screwed. she’s so beautiful, screwing her nose up as she laughs, covered in mud and ink and bruises.
but spot’s screwed too. race is handsome and charming in how utterly not-charming he is, and he tells stupid jokes and his breath smells like cigar smoke and he kind of smells like cologne. he’s got his sleeves rolled up as he works, cigar tucked into his pocket. spot knows she likes him far too much in the moment she sees him walk over to jack and do their forearm-cross move that falls into the tight hug of two brothers.
and spot is unquestionably the one who makes the first move. and every first move subsequent to that. she knows full well that race would never.
they kiss for the first time when he keeps staring wistfully at her lips like it’s forbidden fruit or something, chewing on his own bottom lip. the street is empty, they’re wandering around late after a day of selling, so she just rolls her eyes and grabs him and kisses him hard. then kisses him again, softer. and he tastes like cigar smoke too - and his cheeks are all flushed when she pulls away. he definitely smells like cologne, something fancy he stole from someone.
she’s screwed.
she kisses him again. and starts laughing when he does - this dizzy sort of giggle like he can’t believe what they’re doing - and snorts against his lips. they’re both dumb lovestruck messes when they get back to their respective lodging houses.

Bracket Info!
My starting list was the 700 illustrations included with first publications of each story or novel, this means the initial magazine printing in the uk and us (usually the Strand and Colliers, though other magazines get involved too especially in the later stories) plus the first novel edition if i could find it. I did Not include reprints or translations, but it might be fun for a later bracket if people want them!
I tried to get the best quality image available for each one but some are just not online unfortunately.
Bracket Poll
Full Bracket - This is in spreadsheet format because with 256 polls in round 1 and inconsistent image titles i can't figure out a more visual format, but im open to suggestions! I'll make some graphics once we hit the later rounds and there's a more manageable number
Bracket Graphic - From round 3 onwards
Polls All - R1 - R2 - R3 - R4 - R5 - R6 - Quarterfinals - Semifinals - Final Battle
Elimination Rounds (complete)
I filtered out some title banners and space-fillers/formatting-focused illustrations, but getting to 512 for a functional bracket is gonna take some elimination rounds first! Since part of the motivation here is to highlight some of the lesser known artists, i split this up into 30 'Sidney Paget' rounds, and 27 'Other Artists' rounds. These will last a week, but i'll be posting one of each every day (more or less lmao)
After these ill seed the proper bracket based on the elimination votes and we can narrow it down to a winner 1v1!
Poll Format Each poll will have 11-12 illustrations, the poll options are numbered and include a partial caption next to the artist name and story abbreviation (STUD, SIGN, SCAN &c.) Under a read more ill include the full captions, the print source, and a list of the characters or subjects present left to right.
You can see the list of story abbreviations here if you're not familiar with them, and that site also has a lot of publication info/history if you want a sneak peak at the illustrations and artists coming up that you might not have seen before 👀
Paget Eliminations
Other Artist Eliminations
Offensive Imagery and Language
I wanted to give a blanket warning for this bracket: These are drawings by white men in the 1890s-1920s, the vast majority are fine, but there is a handful that portray racist and classist imagery in line with what is present in the stories themselves. I can't consistently warn for these individually out of a list of 700 pieces, but i also dont want to pretend they arent part of this history or set myself up as an authority on which cross a line or not, so ive decided not to automatically exclude illustrations that might be offensive. Likewise, im not censoring any of the captions that are part of images, but will do my best to remove offensive terms where i'm typing them out.

Thank you for 71 responses!
We appreciate everyone who filled out our interest check and all who reblogged, retweeted, or told their friends. As the chart below will show, y’all are really excited about the Gallifrey zine, and we’re really glad to see that enthusiasm!
Big Picture Takeaways:
This fandom really wants a zine!
Interest in a prompt week was more varied, but that’s what we expected, since not everyone who filled out the form makes fan creations.
There’s a lot of excitement about different merch ideas, but not a lot of interested merch artists. So we want to remind everyone that you don’t have to have merch design experience to be a merch artist - we’ll give you any templates you need and walk you through the process.
Although many interested buyers are in the US, we will still be shipping from the UK because international shipping is much cheaper from the UK to the US than vice versa, and we have many interested buyers from the UK, too.
Full results below the cut:

Hi there! My name is Fay Roberts, and I’m the founder of Allographic Press, which has been running since August 2011.
In this post, I’ll be telling you a bit about Allographic, about the new initiative we’re launching this week, and how you can submit work to the next anthology.
And if this is all a bit much to read, we have a simplified checklist here.
About Allographic
Allographic’s founding aim, and continuing mission, is to platform the voices less heard, raising marginalised stories into mainstream view as much as possible. So far we’ve mostly achieved that through open mic guest artists, hosting special performances, supporting the Other Voices show at Edinburgh Fringe (intersectional feminist spoken word cabaret), and focusing mostly on publishing single collections by people of marginalised identities.
New Venture
Now we want to go a step further, bringing back the Small Word anthologies we used to do, and theming them for a variety of experiences less explicitly well-represented on the publishing scene in the UK. The initial plan is for them to come out quarterly, in limited runs of 100 printed copies of A6 pamphlets, plus using ebook technology on a variety of platforms, to make the work more accessible. Please follow this blog and our various social media outlets, for news of the anthologies as they come up.
Submit to the anthology
So, to kick off, we’ll be producing an anthology based around the notion of neurodiversity – whether that’s autism, ADD/ADHD, synaesthesia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, hyperlexia, Tourette’s Syndrome, or any of the other experiences that sit under the banner of neurodivergence – we want to publish your poems, stories, essays, photos, and original artwork (though please note that the latter two will be in black-and-white in the print versions). Please note that, for the purposes of this publication, self-diagnosis is perfectly valid as a basis for writing about the experience of neurodivergence. The working title for the anthology is currently Synaptic Resonance, but we’re definitely open to alternatives if you come up with something better!
Submit via this form.
Timelines
The deadline for submission is 28-Feb-23; we’ll be closing the form at midnight on 1-Mar-23 (GMT), with an aim to publish at the beginning of April 2023, with an online launch event shortly afterwards. It’s free to enter, and, if your work is selected, you’ll receive a free copy of the printed pamphlet and ebook. As with all these themed anthologies, we’ll be asking about your personal connection to the theme, as we’ll be prioritising selecting the work of folk who are neurodivergent themselves in this instance. The limit on entries is 3 pieces, with no limit on length (though we may reserve the right to publish an excerpt with a link to the full version online, especially for essays/ stories, etc.), and each piece must be submitted in its own separate file (see form for details – MS Word, ODT, and RTF files are fine, ditto PNG and JPG for artwork, but no pdfs). If you submit more than one piece per file, we will ignore anything beyond the first piece. Please note that for poetry and prose we are after pieces that are completely or mostly written in the English language, as we currently do not have the means to proofread other languages beyond Google Translate! You should hear within two weeks of the closing date whether your piece has been selected. Please note that we do not have the capacity to give feedback on individual pieces at this time, and we will not be accepting unsolicited manuscripts, or submissions via any means but the form provided, mostly because we’re a tiny team and there have to be some limits!
Please note that, if you want to ensure that we experience your poems (especially concrete poems) in the format/ layout you intend them, it will be best to download our template and submit your files based on that.

If your images include text, please try to use the Verdana font, as that’s what we’ll be using, for the sake of accessibility and consistency. Likewise, we’ll be asking you to supply image descriptions for any visual work you submit so that we can embed that in the ebook versions to improve accessibility.
Conclusion
So, talk to us about the trials and tribulations of communication and executive dysfunction; the joys and marvels of a brain that sparkles in dark places and sees the usual rules as guidelines at best. We want to hear everything, from across the spectrum (yep, we went there) of experience.
We look forward to seeing what you’ve got for us!

🏳️🌈 Pride Challenge Update 🏳️🌈
Well holy fuckballs, guys!!! Amazing content in this past queue!!!
We are now officially at 32,590!!
Which means we blew right the fuck through the last 2 goals. So instead of waiting, we're gonna post the 15k goal right now and then the 25k one ASAP!
For 15k, our gorgeously talented friend @imstillafuckinglibra has made some glorious sticker designs for the AQ logo! Please check them out and then vote in this poll for which ones you like best!!
Also!! In anticipation of our next set of prizes, anyone who is interested in joining a community TTRPG (Tabletop Roleplay Game - think Dungeons and Drag Queens), please fill out this form!
Reminder of all the prizes after the jump!
STARTING NOW: Anyone who participates by submitting fic, art or even feedback/prompts/requests--as long as they're not anonymous--will get a special role in the AQ Chitchat server, as well as an invite to the Pride 2023 channel to discuss future posts, prompts, or anything else. The channel will also be a place where VOTES for future (secret) prizes occasionally occur! Note: This is an OPT-IN prize, so if you would like to participate, shoot a DM to Veronica. (@veronicasanders)
15k: A community vote on some awesome AQ Logo sticker designs by @imstillafuckinglibra
25k: Stickers Available!!! (We'll do this ASAP after the poll has had a few days!) We will provide (free) high-quality images for you to print yourself, as well as a little AQ merch store where you can purchase them to support the blog and LGBTQ+ Charitable Organizations.*
40k: Sneak peek of the new banner! Plus, base points will INCREASE to help us rack ‘em up faster!
50k: Drag Race Fandom-Inspired TTRPG (Tabletop Roleplay Game) run by @artificialcandycane - FILL OUT THIS FORM IF YOU'RE INTERESTED
75k: More stickers!! This time featuring different (Drag Race) fanfic tropes!
100k: A set of Queen-inspired Tarot Card Images (formatted so they can be used as lockscreens) by Dartmouth420 (and possibly other collaborators - let us know if you want to help out)!
125k: (Secret) Ship-inspired art! More details later!
150k: Expanded merch options!
200k: PRIDE BANNER REVEAL!!! And hitting 200k will unlock new bonus prize goals!
*The profits from any merch sold will first go to reimburse V for some minor out-of-pocket expenses that she paid for the current theme/coding, and then if there’s anything after that, we will make donations to LGBTQ+ charities such as the ACLU Drag Defense Fund, Black Rainbow AUS, GLSEN, Mermaids UK, and Black & Pink. Other suggestions for charitable organizations are welcome; this should be an open discussion!
