‘Helen is tall, & “élancée”, with a fine figure, rich colour, very dark hair, dark brown, deep set eyes, & a sweet smile. She has a charming, friendly manner & is very affectionate & warm hearted.’ Queen Victoria
The Queen was pleased with Sohn’s painting which she described as ‘vy. like & vy fine. He is, after Angeli, one of the best Portrait Painters I know’. (x)

Letter excerpts from Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna to Princess Marie of Romania
Osborne House, 16 January 1901
Yesterday we went over Osborne Cottage, it is quite changed, but certainly much improved and Aunt Beatrice is enchanted with it. A curious lot they all are, somehow I cannot fit in at all anymore. Ducky's child is mad with the sea and shells and very jolly.
Osborne House, 26 January 1901
I am writing under great difficulties, as Aunt Helen (Duchess of Albany) is sitting in my room and chattering to Ducky's little girl.

This dress has been stuck in my head for the last week. I can’t stop looking at it. I want this molded on a sculpture and displayed in my 500 sq ft apartment. She wears it so elegantly, it was made for her
“Princess Helen of Waldeck and Pyrmont (Helen Frederica Augusta; 17 February 1861 – 1 September 1922), later Duchess of Albany, was a member of the British royal family by marriage. She was the fifth daughter and child of George Victor, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont, and his first wife, Princess Helena of Nassau.”

Princess Helena, Duchess of Albany, Queen Victoria’s daughter-in-law, with her two children, December 1884. On the right is Princess Alice of Albany. At the bottom is Charles Edward, Duke of Albany. Helena’s husband, Prince Leopold, wouldn’t live to meet his son, having died while she was pregnant.
“Darling, you shall know the whole truth every day - I do not mid the pain ( I have very little this moment) but the idea of you unhappy - perhaps crying - at Claremont joined to my horrible disappointment at not coming home - makes me howl. Oh! death would be preferable to this - Darling, we must not shut our eyes - I may be 3 or 4 weeks or longer without being able to move - You see I tell you all the worse (& shall do so on my honour always) - Could you come? by going by sea to Bordeaux, & then by canals to Marseilles? Oh! would it be possible? You see up comes my vile selfishness. You would have no rail then. Oh! if it were possible!!
Thanks [for] your letter, arrived only 2 hours ago - Darling the morphia [morphine] is struggling so with me - that I can not possibly write more. Good night, God bless you. Your ever devoted Leo.”
- Leopold to Helena, not long before his death
“I remained with dear Helen off & on, the whole time, till the Baby was born, a strong boy, who screamed very loudly, on coming into the world. It was carried into the next room, where Sir Wm Harcourt was waiting. When dear Helen was reassured that the Baby was alive, & a boy, she exclaimed: ‘Oh! my Leo, my Leo!’, which cut me to the heart. She bore her suffering most bravely & is so thankful for God's mercy in having spared her & the child. I went in afterwards to look at the Baby, which was in Pauline Bentheim's arms. He is very small.
When I returned to dear Helen, she said, ‘Dear Mama, you will let the child be called Charles Edward, will you not, it was dear Leopold's greatest wish’, which I knew. Of course I approved, thought I should have preferred Leopold. But it will be amongst the names. I left her quite quiet. Wrote quantities of telegrams. Everyone rejoices that all is safely over, but oh! how heartrending it is that dear Leopold was not there.”
- Queen Victoria’s diary on the day of Charles Edward’s birth, 19th July

VICTORIA
Crown Princess of Sweden
A brief History... of her British ancestry...
(born 1977)
pictured above are portraits of the current Swedish Royal Family: the first portrait is of the Crown Princess of Sweden, the Duchess of Östergötland and the King of Sweden; the second portrait is of the Queen Consort of Sweden; the third portrait is of the Crown Princess again; the fourth portrait is of the Duchess of Värmland; and the fifth portrait is of the Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
When I first saw the above solo portrait of Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden I immediately remembered of Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom. Of these portraits in particular...
pictured above are portraits of the Queen of the United Kingdom, the first portrait is by Franz Xaver Winterhalter from 1842, and the second portrait is by Georg Koberwein from before 1865
But could the Crown Princess of Sweden be a descendant of the Queen of the United Kingdom? In fact, she is! Through two of the sons of Queen Victoria.
Crown Princes VICTORIA's ancestry can be tracked to Queen VICTORIA through two lines...
The FIRST LINE is through the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn...
Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom; mother of
Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn; father of
Princess Margaret of Connaught; mother of
Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten - husband of her cousin Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; parents of
Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden; father of
Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden.
The SECOND LINE is through the Duke of Albany...
Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom; mother of
Leopold, Duke of Albany; father of
Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; father of
Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha - wife of her cousin Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten; parents of
Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden; father of
Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
How a Princess of the House of Bernadotte descends from a Queen of the House of Hanover?
Queen Victoria married to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1840 and they had nine children. Their two youngest sons were Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and Leopold, Duke of Albany.
In 1879 the Duke of Connaugh and Strathearn married Princess Luise Margareta of Prussia. And in 1882 the Duke of Albany married Princess Helene of Waldeck and Pyrmont.
The first link of Queen Victoria to the Swedish Royal Family was through her granddaughter Princess Margaret of Connaught, the eldest daughter of the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who married to Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Scania in June 1905.
By October 1905 another of Queen Victoria's grandchildren got married. Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the only son of the Duke of Albany, married to Princess Viktoria Adelheid of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.
Princess Margaret gave birth to her first child Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten in 1906 and in 1907 her husband became the Crown Prince of Sweden.
While in 1908, Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha the first daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was born.
These great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria, the Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the Duke of Västerbotten, got married in 1932. And their only son Carl Gustav, Duke of Jämtland was born in 1946.
Unfortunately the Duke of Västerbotten died in 1947 before he could inherit the Swedish throne, so he was not the first descendant of Queen Victoria to become a Monarch of Sweden.
When Princess Margaret's husband inherited the throne in 1950 as Gustaf VI Adolf, King of Sweden she became the Queen Consort of Sweden.
And her grandson the Duke of Jämtland became the Crown Prince of Sweden. He is the current Monarch of Sweden, as Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, having inherited the throne in 1973.
So Crown Princess Victoria, being the eldest daughter of the current King of Sweden, is a 3x-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. And she will one day inherit the throne as Queen (Regnant) of Sweden.
New portraits of the Swedish Royal Family have been released by the Royal Court- March 29, 2022

Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Princess Elizabeth (b. 1993) and Jane Ross, a theatre actress and the princess’ childhood best friend, in 2018.
[1] = a union between England and Scotland was proclaimed in 1720, making Elizabeth the first monarch of Great Britain and Ireland. [2] = Leopold III ruled for barely a year after the death of his father and as such, as a lifelong bachelor until then, did not have the opportunity to marry nor father a son. [3] = I can’t say whom because I haven’t got that far down on my Romanov tree, which has been changed by Elizabeth II’s daughter Catherine Henrietta marrying Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich I initially had this slot for a to be named Russian Grand Duchess but I changed it to Maria Annunciata of Austria [4] = Henry X came to the throne unmarried. His married mistress had given birth to a son, Henry, and daughter, Eleanor, widely acknowledged to be Henry's. Once on the throne, he tried to persuade Parliament to allow him to marry a Spanish Fascist, which they refused to allow while also allowing him to remain on the throne. He abdicated in favor of his younger brother, being made to sign away the right of all his descendants to the British throne, married a Spanish Fascist and had a daughter, Patricia. [5] = styled Princess Mary at birth, then Mary, Princess Royal on the ascension of her father, eventually made Mary, Princess of Wales but chose Elizabeth as her regnal name.
{Princess Philippine Charlotte of Prussia and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern check out; Elizabeth Antonovna of Brunswick is probably fine but Princess Louise Auguste of Denmark, Princess Anna of Prussia, Princess Thyra of Denmark, Archduchess Maria Annunciata of Austria, and Henry, Duke of Parma all have George Hanoverian or post-Louis le Dauphin ancestry in them which means I need to figure out alternatives.]
