i put my heart in your teeth and say, "don't bite" - bigtirednoodle
(Part 2 of Payneland Princes of Hell AU)
Summary:
“I have changed my mind.” Lie, Again. “No, you didn’t. Now, finish the contract, Mammon." Make me yours. And he already offered his soul, why not throw his heart on the pile at Edwin’s feet? The truth is simply that everything Charles is, was, and will be, already belonged to Edwin. He was tired of pretending that it hadn’t been the case for the entirety of their friendship.
Notes:
The fic title comes from Love in the Thoracic Cavity by Lena Oleanderson A/N: Part two is here! It's darker than Part One. I purposefully wanted these first two parts to be separate because of the difference in ratings. I'll post the related content warnings for each chapter. Part two is the end of the "intro" to the main plot, and I am excited to add the rest of Hell's Court/Allies to the mix.
Shoutout to @aletterinthenameofsanity for this wonderful fic mood board idea and Payneland Party Discord for being the best collaborators.

Dead Boy Detectives Fic Recs Part 6
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5
Sorry its been a while, last month was crazy! Not too crazy for my emotional support fandom, though! You guys are giving me life. So please have another fic rec list. :)
We two boys together clinging by Aliquis
Charles and Edwin explore their romantic and sexual hangups and also help Crystal search for Niko. This fic has everything: excellent writing, developing relationship, rituals, first time, Beltane, a hot priest. This is already a fandom classic and now I've finally read it, I can confirm it's very good! Read the rest of the series too!
The stranger the better by ghostinthelibrary
Everyone's alive and basically the supernatural version of the Men in Black. I love the whole series, but this installment has the boys' first meeting, Edwin insisting he doesn't need a new partner, office gossip and an intriguing case. The prequel also has palasaki and background catwin! Anyway, I'm obsessed with this AU.
Partridge in a Pear Tree by Vamillepudding
Cinderella AU! Charles is basically a Disney Princess and Edwin is Secretly The Prince, it's wonderful. I also loved the worldbuilding and nods to old school Cinderella lore, like the gift-giving tree. So charming, highly recommended.
Wunderkammer by dear_monday, two_ravens
Edwin and Charles (and later Crystal) are functionally immortal and running a magical museum. This fic has a fantastic sense of place (the Athenaeum is a character in its own right) and an intriguingly gothic horror vibe with its sentient exhibits, doors into other planes and unnerving nonchalance about disappearing staff and guests. I would probably die, but I would absolutely go there.
pinch me (I don't want this to be a dream) by shadowquill17
The pince-nez fic! Charles finds a pair of glasses that show him a person's desires. Then he looks at Edwin. It goes about as well as you'd expect. It was inspired by this wonderful comic by technically-human so check that out too!
Let Me Follow by LikeMmmCookies
Time loop fic! The boys get trapped in Crystal's mind, replaying the day of Charles' death. Only Edwin is the New Boy in school and he's alive... Fantastic concept, so intriguing. Plus Crystal being a badass, The Sandman crossovers and Niko!
Oaths of the Forsworn by e_va
Vampire AU! The boys meet while Charles is dying so Vampire!Edwin agrees to turn him. The story is ongoing, but so far it's been focusing on Charles coping with being a fledgling vampire. Compelling.
lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate by KiaraSayre
Edwin is in Hell. Or is he? Fabulous writing, Hell worldbuilding and gut-wrenching detail. Cw for body horror and torture.
'Cause You Cut Through All the Noise by DontOffendTheBees
Edwin doms Charles in a therapeutic and non-sexual way. That's it and it's great. I loved this for its exploration of intimacy, trust and kink.
Instructions on Being by thewritingotter
Everyone is Alive Modern AU based on an AITA post featuring Charles convincing himself he's homophobic when he realizes he hates Edwin dating other men. It sounds like a funny premise, but really brings the angst and poignancy.
in an alternate timeline's light by plentyghost
Charles finds comics!Edwin hiding in the office. Sweet.
Become So Numb by snowkatze
AU where the Night Nurse doesn't help Charles and Edwin spends another 50 years in Hell. Loved Edwin's mechanism for escape, kind-of-dark Charles and the angsty reunion.
unidentified affectionate object by lyres
Edwin is struck by a curse that manifests his feelings as random objects. Good thing Charles isn't also effected... Very cute with mild angst and a happy ending.
between you and me, suddenly something is on my mind by lolotr
Beach episode! A proper one. Just fun, friendship and emotional support. Plus Edwin in an Edwardian swimming costume, complete with a handy visual aid.
Other Types of Intimacy by Asidian
After a tough case, Edwin takes care of Orb!Charles. (Chorb? Is this chorbwin?) I guess I have a thing for non-sexual intimacy. Seriously, though, what could be more beautiful than someone cuddling your soul?
(black is the colour) of my true love's hair by ObsessedWithFandom
Charles has long hair: the fic. Interesting ghost lore with Charles' hair kind of working like his mood-ring polo and growing when he's happy. And this is an established relationship payneland fic, so lately he's been very happy. 😜 Honestly, as a child of the 80s, Charles deserves to have long hair. I need more fanart!

The latest in the Steddie brain rot, so you now those crossword thingies where they say the first three words use see are x (your love life for the next year, your new year's resolutions, stuff like that)?
There was one for fan fiction, the words I saw were enemies to lovers, historical, and time travel.
I'd link to it but FB refreshed and I lost it.
But buckle up, babes, we're going in for a ride.
Hawkins has always been hell. There was no denying that. Eddie in 1983 isn't sure he's going to graduate high school. Yes, he knows it's only October, but school really sucks.
All the bullshit with his dad and trying to make life suck just a little less, he accidentally stumbles on a Gate. But not to the Upside Down. At least monsters he handle (not really, but he's trying to be brave), but snobbish upper class in the middle ages? Yeah, that's going to be a problem.
Like he knows how to talk and how to act, he's be researching the hell out of that stuff since he was a kid.
He doesn't know how to get back , so he kinda wings it and becomes a traveling minstrel. Like it pays decently enough and people will talk to him.
Then he hears of a little princeling who hasn't smiled since his mother died and King Richard is willing to pay a handsome sum to whoever can make the prince smile.
Eddie decides to take up the challenge. If he can get into court, then he have more of ear to the ground to be able to get back to his own time.
The initial audition does NOT go well. The king doesn't like him and the prince is in different.
So Eddie runs his mouth. It really should have gotten him killed or at least thrown in jail, he calls the prince a couple of rather choice insults. And holy fuck, the Prince smirks.
It's not a smile, it should have not counted as one. But the king does. He tells Eddie, now named suitably Edwin (yes he knows his parents named him Edward, but Edwin seemed older somehow), that he now has 30 days to turn that smirk into a real smile as that is when the ball for the Prince to chose his bride and he can NOT have a dour son.
Eddie gets thrown into the Prince's room and is told to stay there until after the ball.
And now he's pissed. That was not the plan. He needs to find a way to get back home. To running water, heated buildings, and flushing toilets.
Dressing up is one thing, D&D is another, but this is Hell. What he wouldn't give to go back to the hellscape that was Hawkins High.
The prince he's learns is named Stephan, so piss him off Eddie calls him Stevie.
The two are hostile to each other. Steve doesn't want the ball, he doesn't want to laugh or smile. He wants to mourn his mother in peace, thank you very much. Which pisses Eddie off. He didn't get the luxury of mourning his mom, and he was much younger than Steve. Dude is nearly twenty. Grow up.
They start snapping and sniping at each other. But close proximity to each other starts to wear off their sharper edges, and they learn to tolerate each other, then like each other.
Then just two days before the deadline, Eddie makes Steve laugh. The King is overjoyed and now Eddie feels terrible. He forgot the price to be paid for making Steve was laugh was to lose him.
As he's packing up to go, a duchess named Eleanor slips into his room and tells him she knows he's from the future and she knows how to get him back. He needs to stay at the castle. So she "hires" him as her personal bard.
Steve is surprised and happy to know that he's still around. The ball comes and he's introduced to a lot of beautiful, rich, well connected women. Lady Christine from France, Duchess Tamera from Russia, Countess Annaka from Germany, and Marchioness Martina of Italy. (Am I borrowing from my other medieval story? Maybe a little. Shush!)
Steve is forced to wait on these women hand and foot, all the while his cousin, the Thomas, the Duke of Hagan is cozying up to King Richard, making an all to obvious bid for the throne.
Lady Eleanor has figured out how to get Eddie home, but Eddie doesn't want to leave without Steve, so he tells him who he really is. Steve wants to believe him , but it's so fantastical.
He starts packing up a bunch of his clothes, his mom's jewelry, and some trinkets from his past that he wants to keep. He has about three bags full and Eddie is getting antsy.
Steve runs into Lady Christine and tells her he's running away and she can either move to the side, or he's going to have to tie her up and gag her. Because he will not be stopped.
She winks at him and runs to the opposite direction Eddie and Steve are going and starts screaming there is an intruder in the castle.
All the guards go rushing to her, leaving the path Steve and Eddie need to travel free.
They get to the gate and Lady Eleanor shoves an scroll into Steve's hand, telling him that all she asks in payment is that when the time comes, when meets a little girl named Jane, with extraordinary powers to give her the scroll. It will help her end the troubles once and for all.
They jump through the gate and they land in the forest behind Forest Hills, just three days from when Eddie left.
Eddie does not graduate that year, because he's too busy teaching his boyfriend modern life and dealing with actual fucking monsters, who knew?
Steve gives Eleven the scroll when he learns her real name is Jane and she has so many questions, but with the information Lady Eleanor gave her, she can completely collapse the entire system. Return it to just a place where nightmares come from and not actually evil.
It takes a lot of effort and some major team ups, but she does it. The Upside Down is no more.
Eddie keeps asking Steve what he's going to with the stuff he brought with him, until Steve sells one of the trinkets to a museum and gets serious money from it. Steve explains that historians are the same no matter the era. You show them something that will blow theories out of the water and they will eat that shit up.
And they live happily ever after.
A lot of museums come calling but after learning about vaults hundreds of feet below their building, hiding treasures from the world out of greed, he will only sell to earnest collectors and small well funded museums that he in turn donates to.
Steve also learns Thomas and Christine married but he died shortly procuring an heir and she took over as regent making her the best queen they ever had.

Runaway Royalty 6
Part 5
Jeff leaned against a tree and crossed his arms where Eddie was whittling something by a tree. He was squatting and hunched over and completely immersed in his work but there was a nervous energy to it.
“So, I heard Rick tried to set you up with our new guy. Tried being the point he really wanted to get across.”
“I appreciate the guy’s…helpfulness. But I don’t want to give Steve the wrong idea”, Eddie said.
“That means you’re not interested in him at all?”
“I’m not not interested. It’s just-I can’t-I can’t afford to be distracted. And Steve would be”, Eddie paused to watch the omega from afar, all he was doing was walking and yet Eddie was entranced.
“Incredibly distracting, noted”, Jeff said. “But, I feel as though you are making excuses.”
“Excuses for what? Not courting some random omega that I just met?”, Eddie hissed when his knife slipped and he nicked himself. “You’re making this a bigger to do than it is.”
“If you are sure”, Jeff said, ready to leave well enough alone.
“We’ve got more important things to discuss.” Eddie pocketed the knife and stood up, leaning in close to Jeff. His voice turned to a whisper. “Rick’s informant knew that I left months ago. And that you’re with me.”
Jeff’s expression turned worrisome. “How could he know all that?”
“He’s a fucking magician, I don’t know!”, Eddie spit out before whipping his head around. “But we’ve gotta be careful now. Keep a low profile.”
“You’re telling me that?”
“I know, you’ve got such a difficult time containing yourself, but try your best.”
Rick told the camp at large the intel he’d received and it was decided their best course of action was to go to the valet’s home and see if he knew anything about the prince’s disappearance.
“So Prince Edwin has been gone for months?”, Robin asked. “Why is his kingdom just now putting out a search?”
“They were probably searching for all those months”, Gareth said.
Steve’s brow furrowed. “But why go public with it now?”
“Perhaps it was the recent disappearance of Princess Robin and Prince Stephen”, Greenley surmised. “Rick’s guy didn’t have much to say on them, so I think it’s safe to say they haven’t been missing for months.
When the next day came, the camp packed up. Steve and Robin were given tasks to help out around. Eddie was tending to the horses and Steve watched from where he was, packing supplies into a bag. There was an odd calm in the air.
And then arrows whistled through that air.
“Raid!”, one voice shouted.
“Scatter!”, another yelled.
“Robin!”, Steve called out, searching her out.
He heard her call out his name and saw that she was already on a wagon, speeding away. Someone was holding her by the waist to keep her from jumping out. Where were they going? Was there some kind of rendezvous point? How long until he saw her agai-
“Get down!”, someone shouted as they tackled Steve over.
He wrestled until he realized it was Eddie. Eddie who smelled like campfire smoke and something earthy. When they got to their feet, Steve grabbed his wrist and they ran like hell from whoever was shooting at them and attacking the camp. Steve didn’t even know where they were going, just away from here.
He couldn’t let himself think about how Robin was going in the opposite direction. She could take care of herself. Suddenly Eddie jerked back, pulling his hand away from Steve.
“What is it? Why have you stopped?”
“I can’t run anymore, something feels weird. I think I’ve got a butt cramp”, Eddie said, hands going to his lower back.
“Are you serious? We’re being chas-there’s an arrow in your ass!”, Steve pointed, hand coming to his mouth.
“Oh…yeah…that’ll do it”, Eddie glanced and then quickly tore his gaze away, unable to look at it.
“Well take it out, you’ve gotta take it out!”, Steve started to panic.
Eddie put a hand against a tree and hunched over. “Would if I could. But it’s a little…beyond my reach.”
“Well what are we supposed to do?!”, Steve nearly shrieked, turning away when he couldn’t bare to look at it any longer.
“Someone’s over that way!”, a man’s voice called from a distance.
Eddie cursed and stood upright again. He grabbed Steve and brought him to crouch down behind a boulder, biting back a groan at the movement. Footsteps approached and Eddie looked around them. He grabbed a rock and tossed it in the opposite direction. It went a good few feet, but it only thudded on the ground, not providing enough of a distraction. Steve rolled his eyes and grabbed a smaller rock.
He flung it and with a flick of his wrist, it ricocheted off two trees and made a slicing noise through the grass. The footsteps moved in that direction and they waited with held breaths for it to go silent again. Once they were sure, Eddie let out a sound from deep within his chest and fell over.
“You gotta take it out.”
“Take what out?”
“You know! The-
“Okay, okay! Just!-Don’t move”, Steve ordered. “Don’t move so I can…” His hands hovered over the arrow, lodged squarely in Eddie’s right butt cheek. “I can’t. I can’t do it. Maybe we can figure out a pulley system or something?”
“Just pretend I’m Robin. You’d pull it out without hesitation, right?”
Steve took a breath. “You both are built similar enough.”
“Now just what is that supposed to mEEEEEAN.” Eddie’s pitch went up when he felt something get ripped from him.
It wasn’t hard to pull out, but Steve was panting all the same as he dropped the arrow. “Alright. You need to drop your trousers.”
“I beg your pardon?!”
“Don’t be difficult. I pulled it out. Now let me tend to it.”
Eddie turned onto his side. “With what, may I ask? Leaves and twigs?”
Steve revealed the bag he’d been packing before the raid. He rifled through it. There wasn’t much but it would have to be enough until they either met back up with the others, or found a village.
“I’ll take care of it. But I’m not disrobing you. Take care of that yourself.”
“Yes, because you doing it would make it improper”, Eddie rolled his eyes. But he shimmied out of his pants, just low enough to reveal the top of his cheek.
Steve used a cloth to wash the blood. Luckily it wasn’t gushing out. Was that normal? How did arrow wounds compare to others? There wasn’t any gauze or anything to patch it up with, so Steve simply put another cloth on top, then stared.
“Is it…are you done?”, Eddie tilted his head.
“Hush up, I’m thinking!” Steve put his chin in his hand and then snapped his fingers. “Here”, he looked into the bag and thankfully found a sash. With it, he tied the cloth tightly to Eddie’s behind. It was still much more loose than a bandage would be, but at least he wouldn’t get blood on his clothes.
“Do much nursing at home?”
“Oh shut up”, Steve said, getting to his feet and turning so that Eddie could right his pants. “So, what do we do now? Everyone’s scattered.” Robin…
“They are”, Eddie agreed. “But the Bandit King has a secret hold. So we make our way there, we catch up to the others.”
“And how long will that take us?”, Steve asked.
“That all depends on you, sunshi-”, Eddie cut himself off with a groan as he tried to walk.
“Sounds like it depends on you”, Steve chuckled.
“Alright, flesh wounds still hurt. We might be going at it a little slow.”
Steve looked at their surroundings. Deep forest, no way of telling exactly where they were. And it seemed dangerous to move while Eddie was hurt. His sister was an alpha and she had others with her. Right now her biggest worry was him. And if he returned to her with an injury, she’d never let him live it down. ‘Ever since we stopped sharing a room, it all went downhill for you.’ Said ‘room’ was how she referred to their mother’s womb.
“We’re staying here”, Steve said.
Eddie’s eyes got wide. “Here? Like right here?”
“Whoever those guys were, they’ve moved on by now. And I’m not carrying you when you collapse from that disease that makes alphas think they can carry on while bleeding.”
“Has anyone ever told you that you’re very comfortable giving orders?”
“I’ve been told something to that effect before, yes.”

I am defo not gonna write this bc the sheer amount of worldbuilding is beyond my mental capacity rn but I would go absolutely insane for some kind of Payneland Legend of Zelda AU.
Like BOTW is what comes to mind immediately — Edwin as the clever prince, triforce of wisdom, descended from the Goddess and trying desperately to live up to his family expectations and harness his power in time to stop a great evil rising, fearing all the time that it's out of his reach and he's not good enough and he'd be better off pursuing his scientific inclinations to help shore up tactics and defences.
And his knight, Charles (who DEFINITELY talks more than Link lmao), courage incarnate, who is to be the champion that fights the great evil if Edwin fails to harness his powers, so naturally at first Edwin resents him and sees him as a symbol of his failure that he can't get away from bc it's Charles' duty to be by his side at all times, a constant reminder.
But he grows closer to him, he grows to know him and like him. He likes this strange little man with his odd goofy and feral qualities, who'd lay down his life for Edwin in a heartbeat. They confide in each other about the burdens put on them by their fathers, about what they'd do if only they ever had a choice in the matter. It's Charles who is there for him when Edwin is hollowed out, his prayers unanswered and his power unresponding. It's Charles who takes the weight of the world off Edwin's shoulders and takes it on himself.
So when the evil does return, and Edwin feels as unprepared as ever, he insists on trying to fight any way he can, even if that just means being there by Charles' side. It's Edwin crying in the mud of the battlefield when all is lost and it's all his fault. It's Charles fighting to his last, not a hope in hell of defeating the evil but if he can protect his prince, that's something, that's all that matters. And when Charles falls and a monster goes for the final blow, it's Charles' life in danger that finally awakens Edwin's power.
But Charles is dead — or near enough — and the evil has risen. Edwin cannot vanquish it alone in his state, but he can contain it. And if they hurry, there might be hope for Charles, too.
And so Charles awakens, a hundred years later in the Shrine of Resurrection. The world he knew is a war-torn ruin that nature has begun to reclaim. Most of his memories are gone, but the ghosts and ruins of the land tell him what must be done; tell him that the boy who was once his prince has been enduring a neverending torment for the last century, locking himself in the castle with the evil and doing everything in his power to keep it contained there. That only Charles can save him. He has to find allies, find his sword and, if possible, his memories. His entire life and purpose coming back to him in drips and drabs, in memories of Edwin, as he forms connections all over the ruptured land with the pockets of people descended from the survivors of the cataclysm.
In the end, it takes both of them to defeat the evil. Prince and knight, reunited after a hundred years. Two boys, sixteen and a hundred and sixteen, lost in time. Finally, they are both ready. Finally, Edwin and the land are free from torment once more; and Edwin and Charles can be together once again.

The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi - 5/5 stars
This book managed to rip my heart out at least 3 times. I loved it. Medieval enemies-to-lovers slow burn; very romantic. Kinda read like fanfiction at times but in a good way. 10/10 would read a follow-up love story about Arundel and Captain Wekena. If you like Captive Prince, give this one a try.
Reforged by Seth Haddon - 4/5 stars
Pretty good bodyguard romantasy. Ironically CS Pacat blurbed this one (another am-I-in-the-matrix moment). The world was interesting and I enjoyed the politics, though they're definitely not as complicated as other SFF politics I've gone feral over (see: Captive Prince, Winter's Orbit, A Memory Called Empire). I ordered the sequel after I finished this.
The Doctor's Date by Heidi Cullinan - 4/5 stars
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske - 5/5 stars
Where do I start? I love, love, LOVE A Marvellous Light. It's one of my favorite books ever. None of the rest of the books in the trilogy could live up to it, really, because it's so good. You'll notice I rated this one 5 stars though, because quite honestly I fell prey to a bit of The Academy Paying The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Its Due syndrome. I did love this book and thought it was better than A Restless Truth (which I still loved!) but part of that is, quite frankly, just due to the fact that I prefer m/m romance to f/f romance.
Anyway. This was such a good finale to the trilogy. I loved that the romance was a giant middle finger to purity cultists. I loved that one of the mains was Italian. I loved finally getting the story of what happened to the Alston twins. One thing I thought was really cool was how, viewed from the outside, you totally get why Edwin is such a loner. I really admire from a writing perspective how Marske pulled that off.
I feel like there's a lot to be said about what Marske was trying to SAY with this book, but I definitely need to reread it first before I can articulate any of it. The purity culture stuff is obvious, but the magic system too. I feel like Jack when he's almost able to connect everything in his mind into a bigger idea, but he can't quite get there.
I've got a special edition from Illumicrate coming, so I'll be rereading it when I have that.
Oh also, this book was the embodiment of all that one tumblr post -
The Guncle by Steven Rowley - 5/5 stars
I saw this in bookstores for years before I finally gave in and bought it. The blurb makes it sound insufferable and twee. Ignore the blurb. This was such a good book about grief and learning how to live again after terrible loss.
I Like Me Better by Robby Weber - 4/5 stars
At last I can stop getting the Lauv song stuck in my head whenever I set eyes on this book (it's stuck in my head as I type this). Pretty standard-issue YA, but it was cute and had a good message.
The Stagsblood King by Gideon E Wood - 4/5 stars
Another book about moving on from grief! This is the second book in a trilogy. When I was trying to determine if I wanted to read on beyond book 1, I scoured the internet for information about what happens in books 2 and 3. Eventually I decided, hell, I enjoyed book 1 well enough, even if what I want to happen in the rest of the trilogy doesn't happen, they're worth reading. SO, to that end, I will tell anyone looking for info that Tel gets romantically involved with a new man in this one, which, eh. I still want him to somehow end up with Vared. It was still quite good though.
In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune - DNF at pg 82
So funnily, we were at the bookstore the day I was about to start reading this, and my wife pointed out Ravensong (also by Klune) to me and said, "Do you have this one?" I made a face and said, "That's an older one of his books and I'm wary of his early work after that horrible Verania series. I don't think I've ever read an author as hit or miss as TJ Klune."
I wrote the above when I was 60 pages in and now I have officially DNFed this. Listen. You know how in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi was clearly given free rein to do whatever he wanted, so all of his worst impulses made it to the final cut unchecked? Yeah. That's what this book is like.
Here's my Storygraph review: I see Klune is officially Too Big To Edit now. This book has exactly the same problem that his awful Verania series had—a joke that's funny at first but quickly grows tiresome when it's repeated five times per page. The emphasis on Victor's asexuality was also weird and read like Klune was just super proud of himself for writing an ace character.
Lion's Legacy by LC Rosen - 4.25/5 stars
Queer, YA Indiana Jones, but less #problematic. This book had some eerie similarities to my own archaeology adventure novel(s), which made me wonder half-seriously if I somehow know Lev Rosen? Anyway, I feared this would be very heavy-handed and not nuanced on archaeology's ethical dilemmas, since it's YA and also the current culture is to view said dilemmas as completely black and white with no nuance, but I was pleasantly surprised. It manages to examine that, queerness, and daddy issues, plus has time to be a genuinely fun and exciting adventure story. Highly recommend.
Too White to be Coloured, Too Coloured to be Black by Ismail Lagardien - 4/5 stars
I picked up this memoir in a bookstore at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg as research for Six Places to Fall in Love, since Percy is coloured. A pretty brutal read, but good, and definitely good research. The author was a photographer and journalist through the most violent years of apartheid.
The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson - 5/5 stars
Two nonfiction books in a row?? This is the second book by Erik Larson I've read, the first being the excellent The Devil in the White City. I'm not, in general, all that interested in WWII when it comes to military history, but this book is about the day to day lives of Churchill and the people surrounding him (with brief stops to visit FDR and high-ranking Nazis sprinkled throughout). This is a very, very good book, and I recommend reading it if only as a reminder of the resilience and bravery of ordinary people under terrifying circumstances.
Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh - 5/5 stars
Holy shit. Holy shit is this book good. Imagine the love child of Lost, Person of Interest, and Battlestar Galactica, but queer and with multiverse shenanigans thrown in.
I need everyone to read this book. Now. Yesterday. Get to it.

An Incomplete (and Very Long) list of thing Edwin Payne missed while he was stuck in Hell
This list emerged because I was talking about how he would have missed the end of World War One and then the list kept going. It is not complete or in order, and is provided simply for posterity
ww2
spanish flu
the hindenburg disaster
the rise of public radio

About those bridgerton adaptations
One thing that i really like about the new Queen Charlotte series, and in less extend the bridgerton series it is the approach to the romantic love, in every Bridgerton book (i had read all of them except franchesca´s) all problem are resolve by romantic love. And i mean every single one of them.
Romantic heterosexual love is the solution for all those bridgerton brothers and sisthers problems and yes, they are romantic books but i must admit, after 8 of them it cause fatigue.
In queen Charlotte, the King is mad and she is lonely , and they decide to give their love a try and fight and endure the dificult situation. And guess what? at the end he is still mad and she is still lonely. But they had love, it is diferent. THeir love didn´t cure George, it help him to live with his illnes, it help her to live in solicitud. It´s help but it didn´t solve it. And i believe they are alloud to that just because the series is finally free of the contriction of a romantic novel.
In a romantic novel, by definition, romantic (heterosexual) love solve the problems. The hero and the heroin will always remanins victorius and happy and the end. This logic cannot be translade enterely to tv series.
No better example that bridgerton season two.
In the book Edwina take very well the romance betwen Kate and Antony, she had a secret love and is relieve of ending her inminent wedding with the viscount we, in the book never took a glimse of this secret love, never leave the story of Antonny and Kate good enought time to see other caracthers, not even Edwina. Her feelings aren´t relevant for the story. She is not angry or mad for the betray, hell, every one with a sister must agree that even if you don´t like and Ex boyfriend watching him be in love with your sisther must be weird, no matter how good sister you are. But not in a romantic novel, Edwina has her love, Kate has her love so perse, all problems are solve.
A tv series is diferent, we need b history. So, for that particular “last minute solution to our protagonist problems” the show had to a)give us glimses of Edwine secret love for her schoolar or b) let her be mad with her sister.
And honestly option b was the best one.
If we knew since the begining that Edwina has no interest in Antonny and was living her own romance then there is no real tension for our couple, but BUT if we alloud Edwina to have feelings that is problem for Kate, she has to deal with the consecuense of hes action. And yes, Edwina would forgive her, of course but is not magic solve by romantic love, is talk about it, is deal with it, its create a fracture in the family that it will take time to heal.
What i mean is, i had read a lot of romantic books, and they function in their own logic, i hope Netflix and Shonda read the books, understeand the focus and the caracther and continue to deliver, my favorite part of every season had been the things they change from the books.
I love the deal with the prince and the jeoulosy, the box match, the premature death of lord featherintong, hell even enjoy the weird affair betwen the new lord featerington (excuse me i have no idea how to writte their name right) and lady feaderintong, i like that Eloise discover Penelope, i like their fight!, i like eloise fight for independence, i Hope i really really hope they change her history and let her be happy with sir phillip and his children and don´t force her to have children of her own, please, let a woman who doesn´t want to bare children don´t bare children, Marina Thomson is my favorite season one character!
My point is, because i have a point, im exited of how they are gonna circle around the romantic novel logic in the future, i want love storyes who challenge the protagonisnt, those who face their problem, who make hard choices, who has ugly feelings and flaws and still still love.

Day 2 - Only dialogue
We can't stay within the borders! No one will help us!”
“That can't be true! Uncle has dozens of men that were loyal to him surely they will shelter us!”
“Those men were just as many snakes as the ones who betrayed him outright! they will always be grabbing power and now with the regime change, they will do their best to ingratiate themselves to the new king and take power in the New Order. Especially those of lower rank we can't trust anyone but each other.”
“ They will if not for the loyalty to the king then for their loyalty to the goddess! The faith would not abandon princes and princesses of the bloodline appointed to rule by the goddess herself! they are a part from the order of the court and the tangled webs that they spin. Surely they will help us!”
“I don't want to go to the sorceresses. They scare me, and he always asks for blood.”
“Lily has a point. Now that Fother is no longer on the throne and cannot control them they do not know what they will do loyal to the goddess they may be but their interpretation often differed from that of the crown. “
“ You are the crown now Ed!! Your word is the law of the stars and the land! You should go to a stronghold of the priesthood and take the power that is rightfully yours and restore our family to power.”
“ The main Temple of the priesthood is on the other side of the country we would have to evade Patrols and Warlords and that's not very easy with a 12-year-old, 9-year-old, and two seven-year-olds. I don't know if you noticed but they're pretty freaked out. Bella hasn't said a word since we got out of the capital, Michael freaks out if he can't see any of us and the twins have it let go of each other's hands all day. And honestly, I don't blame them!! We are in a crappy situation and I think the best way to get out of the situation is to get as far away from the capital and this country as possible and then regroup and figure out what to do but first things first we need to find a safe place and that does not exist here anymore.”
“Oh, so you're a great plan is to run away!! This is our home Edwin! And I will not see it abandoned so easily! You are the Crown Prince for you to run away and take refuge in another land is a great sign of weakness it will show our enemies that we have truly been defeated and that our home is now theirs. we must stay and fight!”
“ I’m 15 for the gods' sake, Alex! I'm nowhere near the age of majority and I highly doubt that any of our soldiers would follow a child into battle. especially one that they know is no good on the battlefield. I'm not a warrior I am a scholar I was always going to be a scholar a king scholar yes but a scholar. Michael and Patrick were supposed to take over the armies for me and Fred would have..”
“I miss Fred.”
“I know Bella, we all do.”
“Won't be the same without him. he was my best friend and my little brother and I watched him die. I just stood there I didn't even try to --to”
“Oh come here Bella. It’s ok, let it out.”
“Maybe you're right. they're all so young I don't think they could handle another War.”
“ okay then we head south.”
“ We need a plan. South is just a direction not a destination. Where exactly do you think we could go?”
“ in an ideal situation we would have to our great uncle's Court up North but that means Crossing a lot of unfriendly territory and we don't have the resources to do that.”
“ resources we only have the clothes on our back and the shoes on our feet. we got jack shit.”
“ hey watch your language! There are children about!”
“For fuck’s sake! We are all childern. Fuck shit damn hell shit eating fuckers!!!! “
“ Did that get it all out of your system?”
“No I’m still pissed as fuck.”
“ okay that's enough. I get that you're frustrated but that isn't productive at all. like you said we need to come up with a plan. and I can't do that all by myself. I need you Alexandra, I need my cousin to have her head squarely on her shoulders so we can get through this. “
“You think I'm frustrated! I am beyond frustrated! everything I ever knew and loved is gone I know you want to run away! my parents are dead you are parents are dead or home has been taken and you are running away and taking the rest of us with you! what kind of cowardly Prince runs away when his kingdom needs him!”
“ the type of Prince that one day wants to return to his kingdom alive. I can't do anything from the grave the only way we have a chance of taking back the throne is if we survive. and our chances of doing that here or very very low. a dead man cannot rule.”
“That may be but a coward will not be followed. if you run away now it'll set the tone for your entire reign. the prince who ran away to let others fight his battle.”
“ Stop! I am not a coward for doing what I think is best.”
“ ‘what you think is best’ you can't do what you think is best you have to do what you know is best.”
“ Ok, then what I know is best is for us to survive we leave the country find a place to regroup and gather strength and then when we are ready at a time of our choosing we take back the throne. but only when we are ready not at the time and choosing of the enemy but at our own choosing.”
“ You know that all just sounds like more excuses. your father would be disappointed with a coward you have turned out to be.”
“ Enough. One more word out of you about me being a coward or disappointment and I will leave you behind. I am the Crown Prince and Future King. I will not tolerate such disobedience and disrespect from one of my court years cousin though you may be. One day it will be I who rule not you me. if you want me to be king so badly then stop questioning my orders and fall in line. I am the air and I will decide what steps we take forward.”
“ as you wish, Your Highness”

1, 5, 8, 12! Dbd ask game ;3
DBDA ask game here! :D
1. Who is your favourite character?
That would be Edwin. Saw that guy looking Like That(tm) at his 'best friend' and I knew.
5. Which character do you relate to the most?
There are bits in every character I feel close to but if we take who I rotated in my mind a lot it would be Edwin. The reason is a bit more personal than Im ready to share, its enough he knows. :D
But the runner-up is Jenny because because I also swear at every inconvenience. <3
8. A headcanon you have (that you havent seen talked about yet)!
I think I already mentioned that I think Edwin's eyes only turned gray/green after his time in Hell and before that they were blue.
Also, I think that after his time in Hell, Edwin sometimes catches Despair looking at him in some reflective surfaces. Only for a split second, only enough so that Edwin is aware that Despair is there and watching.
12. If you existed in the universe would you hang around as a ghost? (What would you do?)
No, I'd move on, tbh. But I'd probably be a witch, ngl. Not an evil one... or, well, would try not to be an evil one. But def something of that caliber. I'd be surrounded by hedgehog princes and cursed frog ladies.
