May I have a fact about barn owls. Like the one you saw on your trail cam?

Of course! But Shroud (our resident owl) is actually a barred owl, not a barn owl!

So first off, barred owls love to take baths, even in winter they make a habit of cleaning themselves regularly! Which we already have seen thanks to this video of Shroud enjoying a bath on a nice hot day!

Unlike most owls, barred owls actually don't mind the daylight! Thanks to this they're one of the most commonly seen owls!

A few pictures I got of Shroud sitting on a branch maybe fifteen feet from me.

Speaking of, they don't really mind people. Barred owls have been seen in towns and large cities at night hunting rats and mice! They're also known to hang out near campfires to snatch up the bugs that fly around it.

While that's true they have been known to divebomb humans if they feel threatened, or if the human gets to close to their nest.

Barred owls don't really soar like many other birds, but they love making direct glides through the woods while hunting, which we were also lucky enough to get a video of. They glide close to the ground, under the lowest limbs of the surrounding trees.

Now let's do some rapid facts!

Unlike most owls, a barred owl has brown eyes, not yellow.

They have asymmetrical ears, which helps them pinpoint the location of prey!

Barred Owls actually have a terrible sense of smell.

Barred owls will care for their young for around four months which is much longer than most other owl species.

They mate for life! That means one pair can be together for upwards of 20 years.

Barred Owls don’t migrate, and they will live in the same area their whole lives, having only moved a few miles during that time.

God so fucking gay. Also if I'm not mistaken (which I could be because I don't know flowers) Betty sure those are like some lilly equivalent which is known in anime/manga for being a yuri flower. Since you asked so nicely, yes. Yes you can. Meet the fat tailed sheep

Absolutely ridiculous animals. So, technically the fat tailed sheep isn't actually a breed as much as it is a condition to be called, which is why they look extremely different. There's two different types of fat tailed sheep, the broad fat tail (left), and the long fat tail (right). Though broad is more common because the long actually grows fat on its tail until it hangs and hinders movement.

These guys have been around for a long time. Like, 2400BC and 3000BC Iraq on stone vessels and mosaics are the earliest records. It's even mentioned that fat tail sheep were sacrificed in the bible.

Okay, but why do they have that big ol behind? What's the point? Easiest answer, food. Humans selectively bread them because they liked the taste of the fat stored in the tail area. It was used extensively in medieval Arab and Persian recipes. Plus, since they're like camels, they're specially acclimated to desserts, so the fat comes in handy there too. But it was mostly food.

Look at these 17th century drawings of them. They make me chuckle.

They were surrounded, outnumbered, but it wasn’t anything new. They’d faced more Grimm than this at once before and still come out of it alive. Except those times they’d had the advantage of being uninjured on their side, and they’d had Ruby and Weiss with them as well.

By now the old wound on Blake’s stomach had opened up again, and Yang had dislodged her prosthetic a while back in order to free herself from the jaws of a wolf. 

There was no time to breathe. The beasts just kept coming, slashing and snarling. It gave the huntresses no choice but to use whatever means necessary to avoid certain death. When the bullets ran out and the sword had shattered they resorted to kicking and punching. 

But in spite of how many they’d killed there were still more.

Blake staggered back, a wave of dizziness crashing over her as pain pounded in her gut. Blood was still leaking out of her wound, and with how low her aura was getting it wasn’t staunching as effectively. When she spared a second to glance behind, she saw that Yang was already burning out. The flare of her semblance was weaker than Blake had ever seen it before, and it terrified her much more than the wolves did.

Two more pounced at each of them. Blake kicked hers in the throat and heard Yang land a heavy punch at the other. When they next staggered, their backs bumped one another’s. Their shoulders heaved in time, blood dripping at their boots. 

Blake saw the red staining Yang’s hair, coating her face. When she met her eyes they had already faded back to lavender. Blake panted against her, ears tattered.

“Yang, we... we really might die here...” As she said it, the words made the reality all the more probable. Tears welled up behind her eyes and started spilling down.

She felt Yang’s weight sag against her back and turned her head. Yang was breathing hard, covered in blood, her only remaining arm clutching her chest. But in spite of it all she gave Blake a pained smile.

“No way...” she rasped. “I... love you too much to die...”

The words didn’t register right away, but Blake’s ears perked up tall.

“W... What-”

But Yang’s eyes fluttered closed and she dropped to her knees. Blake shrieked and knelt to catch her.

“Yang?!”

The wolves snarled and rushed forward. Blake cried out and pulled Yang to her chest, covering her with her own body as the claws and teeth came-

And then the battle cry of reinforcements. Ruby and Weiss and a dozen others charged in just in time to slaughter the last of the Grimm. 

Blake tried to stay awake, but she couldn’t. The last thing she remembered was the subtle warmth of Yang in her arms.

When she next regained consciousness she was in the infirmary. Yang was lying in the bed next to hers, and Blake made quick work of getting up to go to her. 

She sat there for a while, holding Yang’s flesh hand, watching her chest rise and fall as she slept. 

Somehow they’d both made it.

When her eyes finally opened, Blake leaned over her anxiously, until the worry faded into relief.

“Yang...”

“Mm... Hey, Blake. Good to see ya.”

Blake felt the tears dribbling down within seconds, a small laugh working its way out as she shook her head a bit.

“Good to see you too.” She curled her fingers through Yang’s and gave a squeeze. “Yang... before, did you... did you say that you... love me...?”

She watched her partner’s face turn pink, watched her jaw drop.

“I-I uh... did I...? S-Sorry, I-”

But Blake leaned forward and quieted her with a kiss. She both felt and heard Yang’s little wheeze of surprise, felt her hand clutching Blake’s in return. She could tell Yang was shocked, but not opposing it at all. She could tell she wanted more. 

So Blake kissed her again, and this time she felt Yang kiss back. A purr rose up Blake’s throat as she slipped her hand up to Yang’s chest, over her ecstatic heart.

“Love you, too.”

I would like to know facts about shrimp

Alright, let me tell you about one of the biggest lies we've been told, one still being spread around.

Remember the mantis shrimp? The guys who have 12-16 color receptors (depending on their species). Yeah, they can't actually see more colors than we can, in fact they see less that we do. Okay but how's that possible when we only have 3 color receptors? Well, in humans when multiple colors receptors are set off our brains can blend them together, getting different shades of colors. Studies show that the mantis shrimp can't do that because it doesn't have a central nervous system, so it has a different color receptor for every color it can see and it can't blend colors.
