I’m here to say you’re a giant hypocrite and I’ll prove how using prior examples of when you’ve rooted for the bad guy maybe without knowing.

Numero Uno prime example

When Walt was just trying to cook meth to leave enough money for his family after he passed no one minded. He was a hero, savior, a good guy for providing for his family. For those who’ve seen the series, Walt’s cancer doesn’t take him out as quickly as he intended. He’s left with the decision to stop while he’s ahead or to continue cooking because he’s the best there is. Over the course of the series, Walt continues to make millions upon millions of dollars cooking meth while ruining the lives of plenty of innocent people. By the end of the show, he becomes mad with power and turns on the people he cared about most. I’m sure some of you reading this blog wanted Walt to continue cooking and making money no matter how many people he killed. I know I did because it made the show a million times better. If Walt had stopped after he made enough money to leave for his family that show would have blown and you’re crazy to think otherwise. 

Numero Dos

I could be out on an island with this take but in all honesty, when Anakin turned to the dark side I thought it was a phenomenal twist. He was getting porked by the Jedi council for way too long even though he was the best Jedi there ever was. Obie Won didn’t even have his back! Once he turned to the dark side his power essentially quadrupled. Him continuing to be the intern of the Jedi council would have been fackin teeeeeerible and boring as shit. Unfortunately just like with Walt and Daenery’s the power went to his head and he became blind to his power and betrayed the ones he cared most about. He tried convincing Padme to be about that life but she was a squid and wasn’t having it just like Jon Snow. Overall I was a big fan of evil Anakin and thought he was a fuckin beast. Still pissed he took that L against Obie Won. Never go against someone with high ground, you learn that in Jedi 101.

After providing those examples let’s break down as to why I, along with others rooted for the greatest female show character of all time. (Ya I said it, name one female character better) Also as to how it ties back to the two characters above.

Our first impression of Daenery’s is similar to both Walt and Anakin; we feel bad for their unfortunate situations. We start to root for their success and believe in their mission. As their character plot continues all 3 of them become the most powerful people in their respected worlds. With power, comes hate and envy...all 3 scenarios peers start to go against them and want them to quit while they're ahead. As we know all 3 of them decided to lay waste until there was essentially nothing left. Daenery’s decided to burn King’s Landing to the Ground, Walt killed all who opposed him, and Anakin did the same as Walt pretty much. ONCE AGAIN, had Daenery’s just heard the bells of King’s Landing and decided to spare the city that episode would've been complete assss. I thought it made for a much more exciting end to the series. If Jon and Daenerys just started taking over Westeros that would’ve been fire.

Overall my point is without these characters turning mad from power the plots would have been dull and underwhelming. So maybe even you didn’t root for these characters in the end like I did. I hope this blog helped you have an epiphany that without these characters becoming what they had become, we all would be sitting here very disappointed. Protagonist turning antagonist are the coolest characters...Prove me wrong.

I’m a bit surprised you aren’t mentioning the queer baiting in khan’s mv. You mention when it comes to other groups so what makes it different for this mv? Is there even a way to decipher what is queer baiting and what is genuine representation?

I did kind of mention it in my tags? But also, I’ve been gone all day and haven’t actually gotten a chance to really talk about my thoughts. I do think it was likely queer bait video and I’m kind of annoyed about it. I’m not totally certain why I thought the video/song would be gay from the get-go when we got the title, but I did think that and they almost went there and then...didn’t. And yes, there is a way to decipher queer bait from genuine representation.

I’m not fully versed on it, but most of what kpop does is queer bait. I love them dearly, but what D*y6 did with their monthly video project was queerbait. I was very excited about it and went with it for months and months because it was clearly an ongoing story, but in the end I believe it was queerbait because it was never textualized and we only got “confirmation” that there was a gay thing happening there as like a side comment from Ja*.

Sometimes you have to wait a LONG TIME to learn whether something is queer bait. Prime example numero uno is D*stiel from SPN. The show is still going and has a long standing theme of not resolving anything for their characters, so it’s going to be really damn hard to tell whether D*stiel is queer bait until literally the moment it happens or the moment the series finale ends with nothing happening.

A complicating factor here, especially with my comparison of a Korean media product and an American media product is that the audience and culture it exists for isn’t the same. American has a LOONGGGG way to go, but queer stuff here is much more accepted in general in comparison to Korea. Yeah, a show like Supern*tural could potentially lose a lot of general audience support if it made D*stiel canon, but honestly, it’s unlikely the drop would be that significant in comparison to the amount of queer support they’d get in return. That argument can’t be made in Korea, so I do sort of understand why there’s so much more queer bait than actual representation.

In this case, I said I think it’s likely queer bait but I’m not totally sure. The two members have very shaky public support. Euna did well on The Unit and Unpretty Rapstar but didn’t fully excel in either. Same goes for Minju on Superstar. The public will recognize them and like them, but it’s uncertain if they’ll get a lot of attention. Doing a full on gay video would certainly get them attention, and they’d deffo get a lot of ifans, but potentially at the risk of losing the little public support they have. I think a lot of queer bait also gets carried into public interactions, and since we haven’t seen a ton of those yet from them as a duo, it’s hard to tell if Maroo is gonna try to play up the gay for fanservice purposes. From what I’ve seen in their videos, they seem to behave just as friend, so I feel less like they’re trying to queer bait in that way.

As for the video itself, it feels like a sincere effort at portraying a fledgling relationship that is a little confusing for both parties (in concert with the lyrics) but without any finite use of the other party’s pronouns, it’s vaguely difficult to tell. Especially since we see Euna switch over from a het relationship to (seemingly) one with Minju. Granted, the fact that they both sing the line “i’m your girl” could make it a duet with each other and I’m slightly bolstered by the progression of the choreo from side by side choreo to more of a couple dance (which they omitted from the stage performance). There’s also A LOT of bisexual coding in the video, with the super repetitive use of pink and blue lighting and imagery. They even gave Minju’s hair a pink tinge and Euna’s a blue tinge for their stages... Additionally, there’s the matter of Minju cutting Euna’s hair not long after Euna lets go of the boys hair. Cutting hair after a relationship ends is pretty common in pop culture (not to mention they gave Euna the bi-bob). Lastly, they kept the handhold at the end of the video in their stage choreography.

Sorry for the ramblinggggg. Basically, I do think this counts as queer baiting but, it feels like the most well researched you’re ever going to see it. I’m also hoping they continue the theme and potentially get bolder in future comebacks, especially since they seem to enjoy story telling. In conclusion, I don’t know how I feel about it, but I do to at least some degree feel baited and am frustrated by it. I still enjoy the song and wish them success and hope that they continue to explore this in future comebacks.

The saga of my zero-waste, hippie-dippie life in paradise

I now live on a small Hawaiian island* that 1) is privately owned by someone who is trying to make the island eco friendly and environmentally sustainable and 2) has no recycling.** This has made me think hard about the amount of plastic we use. Also, our little cottage is only 505 square feet including the porch which makes space-saving a thing, and being so remote means that we have had to rethink a lot of our habits and priorities: do we really need this thing, do we really need it right now, is there really nothing else we already possess that could serve the same purpose?

Don’t expect me to be a cheerleader - I went through a very serious hippie period until something over two years ago and had my bubble burst about many things. A lot of supposed earth-friendly stuff is either pure marketing bullshit or just doesn’t work to a satisfactory standard, especially for the premium prices it carries. A largely eco-friendly lifestyle is a choice, and a one that is largely available only to people with a certain level of financial and geographic privilege, and this is a point that seems to be missing from a lot of conversations. I lived in Austin, Texas for almost 28 years and it offered a ridiculous wealth of ways and means to live my ethics and values. Which is why I feel so strongly that I should make these choices - because I can, and it makes me happy. Do I expect many people to make these choices? Hell no, it’s not practical or in some cases even rational for many people depending on life circumstances. Do I hope that every person who is able to make these choices will do so? I suppose I hope anyone who is able to make at least a few changes will. But everyone's mileage will vary.

So I am using my new home as an excuse to indulge my hippie compulsions and try to go as plastic-free, tree-free, zero-waste and ecofriendly as I can, and I will use this Tumblr to chronicle how it’s going. And Numero Four-o: I order direct from the brand whenever possible to support those companies that are doing good things for the environment that sustains living species. I won’t lie, you can’t live in any semblance of comfort on this island without Amazon Prime - there is no car ferry to the bigger islands so a trip to Target et al is time consuming and expensive. For example, just a trip to the nearest Safeway would be minimum four hours (not counting the wait for a Lyft/Uber/taxi) and $110: one person round trip on the ferry (90 minutes, $60, although I'll get a discount once I obtain my Hawaii drivers license) and the round trip car between store and port. But whenever possible I prefer that these companies get all of my money, even if it means that it will take a bit longer to get to me and I pay extra for shipping.

2 Big Reasons Goals Fail

How is it already February?  Did I hit my head and miss a week!?  Regardless, it’s here and this is the time of year where a whopping 92% of New Year’s Resolutions taper off and people return to their unwanted habits.  I’m interested in why goals fail and the psychology behind how we might be setting ourselves up for potential failure.  Wellness Women Radio is a fantastic podcast on a myriad of health and nutrition topics from two Integrative Chiropractors who really know their stuff!  If you’re not already listening, I strongly recommend checking them out.  They feature fantastic doctors and authors who have dedicated their lives to long-term wellbeing.  Great for road trips or long walks!  They had a fabulous January talk on why goals tend to fail.  Listen here.

I believe that every effort we make to live a long-term healthier lifestyle is WORTH IT.  Even if our goals end up changing, it’s all about the journey--I truly believe this--and there are always learning experiences along the way if we’re attuned to them by tracking our experiences.  So even if something does end up “failing,” I think making the effort is always a fantastic choice and failure isn’t something that negates the initial intentions at all.  With that said, I think knowing more about how to properly ignite those intentions so that we’re not overly focused on end results alone and engaging well in the process itself are key.  What are the two biggest reasons goals fail?

Finding Your WHY

Problem numero uno is that most goals are far too generic in nature and are not value-based to last long term.  Think back to the commercials and ads we started seeing around November and December.  Just as most of us geared up for holiday travel (and gluttonous, yummy indulgences), Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and gyms galore were touting their membership discounts and entry level opportunities.  They choose a perfect time to target the population when we’re feeling the most vulnerable and desperate to get back on track (or start for the first time).  You know I’m never anti those programs if they’re a piece of the larger wellness puzzle for someone’s long-term well-being, but it’s so easy to fall for the gimmick of a program after the holidays by setting superficial goals for ourselves, such as, losing holiday weight! or get ready for swimsuit season! (Self Love Reminder:  Your body is always a swimsuit body!)

When a client tells me something like “I want to lose weight and be a fit 50 year old,” I’ll ask them why.  I often get a confused look because surely being a fit 50 year old is enough, but unfortunately, it’s not.  That idea might excite us, but it’s not enough to carry us through the many ups and downs of building those healthy habits.  So I’ll ask them to elaborate.  In essence, I’m trying to get to their deeper “why.” Maybe they want to be a fit 50 year old to stay off pharmaceuticals that they otherwise would require if they keep up their unhealthy habits or maybe it’s because they want to be able to engage with their grandchildren in fun and physical ways.  One client teared up and said she really wanted to meet her great grandchildren one day and teach them about her family history before it’s lost.  Now that is a deeper WHY.  Doesn’t mean her goals suddenly become easily attainable, but that level of WHY is much more likely to motivate her longer so she can build those healthier habits.  

Your goals matter regardless of how deep or short term they might be.  I encourage you to ask yourself “but why?” more and more until you find something closer to your inner most self.  It needs to come from the heart or it won’t last.  It’s easy to justify giving up on nutritious meals, for example, by saying “I don’t really care if I lose that 20 pounds,” but when it’s a deeper why like “I want to be around for my spouse so we can travel and explore the world together,” it’s more likely to stick.

Replacing Negatives with Positives

You’re going to give up some comforts in order to build healthier habits, and you might experience some serious withdrawals or, at the very least, discomfort.  It's so vital that we replace a negative habit or situation we want to get rid of with something positive. Otherwise, the pain of getting rid of that negative habit will make it really easy to go back to the old habit and not take the unknown leap to something new.  You might be familiar with the ever-growing research on neural pathways and how choosing the same thing over and over again creates neural “grooves” in our brains.  It’s challenging to get away from these grooves, but forcing ourselves to take a new path, through new choices, is the only way to rebuild new grooves. Unfortunately, it's not just enough for us to state what we do not want; we also have to state what we do want and then we must actively pursue the more positive action again and again.  A prime example of this is me not wanting to mindlessly scroll social media as much as I did last year.  So I will say that I want that and I will set the intention, but if I don't replace it with a new habit, something that makes me happy and feels positive, it'll be so much harder to quit doing that mindless habit. 

Of course we might need to adjust the replacement habits--that’s part of the learning process so stay open to that.  I decided that I wanted to meditate more and I wanted more time in nature, for example, so I added those items to my calendar with small reminders throughout the day where appropriate.

Because of how our minds work and how emotionally tied to our habits we are, it is vital that we find our deeper purpose behind our goals and then make sure we replace negative habits with more positive ones.  Dig deeper and find the WHY that’s close to your heart; set goals for things that bring you joy and that make you feel good so that reaching those goals are that much easier and lasting!
