"The first use of the word 'wyse' in Malory's Morte refers to the Lady Igraine, Arthur's noble mother, a wise woman who guides her less perceptive husband in trying to evade Uther's adulterous designs. Igraine is perhaps Malory's nod toward the importance of heredity. Uther's morality and judgment are often questionable, and Arthur early demonstrates some of his father's traits in his rash promise to the Lady of the Lake, which he fails to keep; in his instinctive violence in war and in his battle with Pellinore; in his amorous affairs with Lyonors and Morgawse, which both produce illegitimate sons; and in the May Day Massacre. But Igraine's impeccable moral qualities are evident in Arthur's more noble actions as king. Without magical power, Igraine, a 'fair lady' and 'passynge wyse' (1:7), must navigate a treacherous world in which even the forces of good, like Merlin, both use and abuse her person. Malory carefully develops Igraine s moral stature to give her words import and resonance. She always makes the correct moral decisions and in so doing becomes the readers touchstone in judging subsequent characters and events, standing in relief to her own children, Morgawse, Morgan, and Arthur, who connive for their own convenience."

Morgawse: How dare you make my son live in the kitchen like a lowly serving page?! And now you don't even know where he is??
Arthur: Look. If you just wrote us beforehand that he was coming, then this wouldn't have happened! He didn't even introduce himsef properly! How would we have known?
Morgawse: Even so, this your court's fault!
Morgawse: Gawain! Gaheris! Agravaine! What kind of brothers are you?! Why didn't you recognize him??
Gawain: ...i have no idea what my brother looks like?
Gaheris and Agravaine: ...sorry mom

@pendreic | morgawse : ❝ would i lie to you? ❞
the question is ridiculous, coming from the person who lied to him about the biggest secret of and in his life.
❝ are you asking this about a different life we could have had? because in this one, since you did lie to me, my answer is regrettably yes . ❞
he doesn't like to be callous. not with her. he, most often, is not. despite all the hurt and betrayal he feels, mordred has tried to understand morgawse, and why she had to do the things she did. his mother is not the main architect of his bitterness.
but at how much her question overlooks, sweeps under the rug, mordred cannot help but be openly cross with her.

Some additions for your list of everything from my collection of pre-2020 modern retellings.
Mordred’s Curse (1996) and Merlin’s Gift (1997) by Ian McDowell, both Mordred’s pov. Haven’t finished reading them, but they’re interesting takes. Retains Monmoth’s casting of Mordred as the Queen’s lover.
The Green Knight (1975) by Vera Chapman. Alternates between Vivian and Gawain’s pov. Also have not finished reading.
Fang the Gnome (1988) by Michael Greatrex Coney. Takes a while for the Arthurian content to get underway, but Nyneve, human apprentice to the sorceress Avalona, eventually conjures up the world of Camelot. Major appearance by Tristan. Also includes Torre, Melin, Marhaus (Morholt), Palomides, Iseult, Arthur, Morgawse, Gawain, Galahad, and others I’m probably forgetting.
King and Raven (1995) by Cary James. OC Micah navigates the court of Camelot, ascending from fugitive to knight while bearing witness to the legend of Arthur.
Hawk of May (1980), Kingdom of Summer (1981), and In Winter’s Shadow (1982) by Gillian Bradshaw (Series title: Down the Long Wind). Makes the unusual choice of casting Bedwyr in the place of Lancelot as Gwynhwyfar’s lover.
Sword of the Valiant (1984) by Stephen Weeks and Henry Whittington. Inspiration for the Sean Connery Green Knight movie
In Camelot’s Shadow (2004) by Sarah Zettel. OC/Gawain adventure romance
Merlin’s Mirror (1975) by Andre Norton, sci-fi re-incarnation Arthurian tale
Sweet Black Waves (2018) by Kristina Pérez. YA Tristan and Isolde retold from the perspective of Branwen (Brenganae) first in a trilogy but I don’t know if the other two are Arthurian-related.
The Buried Giant (2015) by Kazuo Ishiguro. Haunting piece set in the post-Arthurian dark age Britain. Gawain makes an extended appearance towards the end.
Thank you so much!! Most of these are in the list but I will add the three missing ones!
Sword of the Valiant (1984) Sweet Black Waves (2018) The Buried Giant (2015)
I will tag this with "to add" so I will remember :D

fob natural 2024 masterlist
And that is a wrap! Here is the master post for all the contributions for this year's fobnatural bang. You can also check out the collection here on ao3. Thank you to everyone who participated!
room for one more troubled soul fic by an_ardent_rain and art by z
One chance meeting with Dean Winchester changes Castiel's life forever. They're reluctant partners, then friends, then something more. But every step forward is two steps back with Dean, and as much as Castiel wants him, it always feels like he's just out of reach. Then one day when they're supposed to meet, Dean doesn't show up. He doesn't call. Something, Castiel knows, is wrong. If there's one person in the world Dean would come out of the woodwork for, it's his little brother Sam. So Castiel drives to California to get Sam and get his help finding Dean. [human!au, non-linear road trip fic, feat. sam and cas as awkward reluctant pals and an absent dean]
Hurricane Heat fic by HeyAssButt (D_O) on ao3/Castiel_TFW on Twitter and art by Fandomite on Threads and Discord.
Dean didn't know what to make of the strange tension between this strung-out Cas and his very own clone, but one thing is for sure: He's gonna kill the devil! And nothing, not even a pesky little thing like being in the wrong universe with a pining angel, was going to stop him.
One More Time fic by GhoulsnHalos (Morgawse) and art by @milfycas
The Winchesters have saved the world again—Chuck is defeated. That's what the media headlines would say, if they had known about God's plans for the planet. So, why does Dean think everything still feel wrong six months later? It's obvious, isn't it? Castiel is dead because of him. Jack, the last time Dean saw him, is not acting like himself. Can he fix it or has Dean finally screwed things up forever? Castiel is content with cashing in his deal. He saved Dean, which is really all that matters. The only problem is that once again, he can't behave like every other being in the Empty. He's awake and having strange conversations with the Cosmic Entity about setting not just this place but the balance of creation to rights. What the heck does that mean?
My Sanctuary, You're Holy to Me fic by theseancequeen, art by @butterfleaz
Post series finale. Dean and Cas are on a mission to a cemetery in New Orleans. They haven't talked since either of them returned. As they find themselves trapped in St. Roch, revelations about their past, and feelings about each other, will come to light. Part of the Fall Out Boy-natural Bang Style Event.
Your Best-Kept Secret (And My Biggest Mistake) fic by butterflyslinky, art by deancodedcastielenby
The Angel Tablet broke through all the mind-control and unlocked many long-lost memories, centering on the demon Castiel had known forever but had also always just met.
Blackout Curtains, fic by Celestial_Starlight, art by spn_fanfic_reblog_writes
John Winchester died last year, torn to shreds by a werewolf. Dean killed the monster and dropped out of high school, taking Sammy on the run. Since then, Dean’s had weekly nightmares of being chased by monsters until a black-haired boy in a trench coat emerges from the shadows and protects him. After Sam gets injured fighting off a nest of vamps, he and Dean hole up in a motel for a few days. Dean notices someone watching them – someone who looks strikingly similar to the boy in his dreams. He confronts the boy, Castiel, who tells them Dean’s nightmares are turning lethal. Sam is ecstatic to have a new friend, one who’s an angel no less, but Dean doesn’t trust Cas, no matter what he says. Cas challenges his superiors and risks everything for the brothers, forcing Dean to rethink the person he’s told himself he is and the life he’s carved for him and Sam, as well as the future he might have with Cas.
choose love or sympathy (but never both) fic by thebatmandiaries and art by Reverie
No one knew. And no one was going to know. Dean was not in a relationship, and as far as the public was concerned, he never will be.
That was showbiz, after all.
Welcome to Hollywood, the home of the rich and famous. Where secrets are made to be kept, no matter what.

In devising the sword-in-the-stone display, Merlin ends a period of dangerous anarchy by unveiling something carefully prepared in advance, that is, when he causes it to be the case that ‘Whoso pulleth oute this swerd of this stone and anvyld is rightwys kynge borne of all Englond.’ Merlin thus elides the ordinary political process. He does so again when he withholds from everyone, including Arthur, the identity of Arthur’s father, and then his mother. It is reasonable of Merlin to wait until after Arthur draws the magic sword before disclosing his patrimony: at the moment of proof young Arthur would have no political affiliations, and thus would have inherited none of his father’s enemies. His lineage can then be produced to satisfy the ruling class. (It is less clear why Merlin waited to tell Arthur who his mother was, since that information might have prevented Arthur’s simultaneous adultery and incest with Morgawse (Lot’s wife), and thus prevented the begetting of Mordred.
– Thomas H. Crofts, Malory's Contemporary Audience

"But, before I even begin to tell the story, let me just mention that, Hamlet’s obsession with his mother, Gertrude, is so strong that Freud himself linked their relationship with his Oedipus Complex (here’s another play I should write about, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex)."
That is an absolutely beautiful thing to learn when a surprising amount of your personal vision of Arthuriana is based on The Once and Future King by T.H. White, in which the relationship between Mordred, King Arthur's tragic bastard, and Morgause/Morgawse, his mother and one of Arthur's half-sisters, is 100% a Freudian mess.
Honestly, I read that passage and immediately thought of this quote:
"People write tragedies in which fatal blondes betray their paramours to ruin, in which Cressidas, Cleopatras, Delilahs, and sometimes even naughty daughters like Jessica bring their lovers or their parents to distress: but these are not the heart of tragedy. They are fripperies to the soul of man. What does it matter if Antony did fall upon his sword? It only killed him. It is the mother's not the lover's lust that rots the mind. It is that which condemns the tragic character to his walking death. It is Jocasta, not Juliet, who dwells in the inner chamber. It is Gertrude, not the silly Ophelia, who sends Hamlet to his madness. The heart of tragedy does not lie in stealing or taking away. Any feather-pated girl can steal a heart. It lies in giving, in putting on, in adding, in smothering without the pillows. Desdemona robbed of life or honour is nothing to a Mordred, robbed of himself—his soul stolen, overlaid, wizened, while the mother-character lives in triumph, superfluously and with stifling love endowed on him, seemingly innocent of ill-intention."
Mordred's relationship with his mother in TOaFK is INCREDIBLY fucked-up and fascinating, btw. And as canon as it can go without ever being shown onscreen. After her death, even Arthur himself and one of Mordred's half-brothers, Gawain, eventually conclude and explicitly state that he must have been in love with her and jealous of Arthur for having had a one-night stand with her as a young man.
Although love may not be quite the right word for such a mess of emotional manipulation, psychological abuse, and obsession... not that Gawain and the rest of Mordred's half-brothers are that much better off in that respect, lol.
Nonie, I'm not gonna lie: I know nothing of Arturian myths except for what I learned in BBC's Merlin (which did have pretty incestuous vibes going all over the place). I'll definitively check The Once and Future King. Half-siblings canonically having sex and lot of submet between a mother and son? SIGN ME UP. Also seems like Mordred is another candidate to name the Oedipus Complex.
"It is the mother's not the lover's lust that rots the mind. It is that which condemns the tragic character to his walking death. It is Jocasta, not Juliet, who dwells in the inner chamber. It is Gertrude, not the silly Ophelia, who sends Hamlet to his madness."
I love this part of the quote, it's just beautiful and perfectly explain's the tragedy of Hamlet. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
