Korea set to break the Samsung dynasty
For a society to be unequal and stable, it needs a *story*. If you have less-than-enough and your neighbour has more-than-enough, it's natural to ask why you shouldn't take it from them.
If that sounds weird to you, that's because you believe the story property is, by and large, legitimate. But what if you *knew* that your neighbor had cheated other people to get their stuff? Maybe then you'd support taking it away?

Market societies are, by nature, unequal. Markets produce winner-take-all wealth distributions of great inequality. The winners in markets have guards and cops and courts to help them defend those winnings, but their primary defense is *legitimacy*.
The primary reason that rich people don't have to worry about having their stuff seized by poor people is the *story* of markets, which is that markets allocate capital to people who can use it to make us all better off.

That is, at any given moment, in any given situation, some of us have better ideas than the rest of us about what to do with our planet's resources to make the most of them. In this story, markets find these people and give them money to spend for the common good.
That's the significance of wealth in market societies: the vast, inscrutable, self-correcting system of markets has identified you as a "job-creator," a "wealth-creator."
This is better than hereditary aristocracy, where the nation's capital allocations depend on the whims of people whose only qualification is whose orifice they emerged from. Those people squander our resources on palaces while the people starve.
This is obviously circular: if you're rich, you're good at allocating capital; we know that you're good at allocating capital because you're rich.
But there's something seductive about meritocracy, the idea that prosperity relies on something smarter than orifice-emergence.
Markets are sold as superior to the outdated divine right of kings, the eugenic notion that "good blood" and "breeding" determine who is good at capital allocation. Instead, we have a machine (the market) to find the people who have the right stuff for this particular moment.
But there's a problem with all this: the winners in markets are determined to pass their fortunes onto their children, creating intergenerational dynasties.
And because markets always yield investment returns faster than they grow, the most reliable way to get rich is to already *be* rich - not to produce something of value to society yourself.
That means that markets produce aristocracies, entrusting capital allocation to the wealthy, rather than the "deserving" (that is, people doing things that make the world better off).
Here's a concrete example from Thomas Piketty's CAPITAL. It's a comparison of the growth in three fortunes: Bill Gates during his tenure at Microsoft; L'Oreal heirsess Liliane Bettencourt (who has never worked a day), and Gates since her retirement from Microsoft.
Over the period where Microsoft-CEO-Gates founded and built the most successful company in the world and Liliane Bettencourt ate bon-bons and went to fancy parties, Gates made a *lot* of money. Betancourt made more.
But guess who made the most? Investor-Gates: that is to say, when Gates stopped running a successful company (a proxy for "doing a thing that makes other people better off") and started shuffling money around, the market allocated *more* capital to him.
Markets are only incidentally systems for allocating capital to people who do stuff. Mostly they are systems for allocating capital to people who already have capital.
That means that if you let people pass on fortunes to their kids, their kids will amass even-greater fortunes without having to make anyone better off; and *they* will pass that fortune onto *their* kids, who will do the same, and so on. We're back to aristocracy.
If it sounds familiar, you might be thinking of the Trump family. Fred Trump was a Klansman and slumlord who cheated his way to a fortune, who passed it on to his bungling idiot child who made it even larger, despite a string of cheats and bankruptcies.
Now *his* kids are poised to be richer still, despite their obvious detriment to society and unsuitability for making allocation decisions to increase broad prosperity.
Trump has a story to explain why this is OK: "good blood."
Trump frequently talks about his good blood, as do many wealthy people involved in intergenerational wealth transfers. They reveal the intrinsic contradiction of markets' superiority to aristocracy.
When people who make money doing stuff get to pass it all on to their heirs, we quickly arrive at a society where capital allocations depend on which orifice you emerged from, not what you do for the rest of us.
In other words, over time, the winners of markets sideline "meritocracy" in favor of old-fasioned eugenics. This process has been underway, slowly but surely, for decades, so much so that it's surprising to read about any interruption to it.
Take this story: "Samsung’s Lee family to pay more than $10.8 bln inheritance tax." The reason it's newsworthy is that the heirs of Samsung chair Lee Kun-hee stand to lose control of the giant Korean chaebol (family-owned conglomerate).

Kun-hee was the eldest son of the founder, Lee Byung-chul, who benefited from a postwar program in which the US assisted (or arm-twisted, depending on who you ask) the new South Korean state to restructure as a semi-planned economy.
The chaebols were formed out of family businesses that had demonstrated some success through Japanese occupation and the civil war, and were given quasi-monopolies over large parts of national production, all but guaranteeing their success.
Ironically, this mixed economy accomplished the notional goal of a market economy - it produced jobs and material prosperity, and allocated capital to the people who made that happen.
But if Lee Byung-chul was the right person at the right time, and if his son Lee Kun-hee learned enough to carry on the family business successfully, that suitability petered out by the time the third generation took over the company.
How unsuitable? Well, Lee Jae-yong, Samsung's largest shareholder, is currently serving a 2.5 year prison stint for his role in a corruption scandal that brought down the presidency of Park Geun-hye.

Given the general impunity of the chaebol aristos, the fact that he's doing *any* time tells you that he's an utterly indefensible sociopath.
It's his generation of Lees that stands to lose control of Samsung when they pay their sensible and proportionate inheritance tax.
As Piketty points out, if this generation *was* qualified to be good capital allocators and not mere winners of the orifice-emergence lotto, they'd have reproduced their vast capital stake ahead of the inheritance tax and be able to retain control.
The fact that they can't beat the market and the taxman is prima facie evidence that whatever made Grampa and Daddy suitable CEOs isn't present in their generation.
That, and the corruption conviction.
The Lees aren't going to be poor. They'll never have to work a day in their lives. What they face is being stripped of their power to make vast, nation-scale capital allocations.
If their kids don't reproduce the remaining family capital ahead of the inheritance tax, they'll be a little poorer, but still rich, and so on, until, finally, a Lee descendant will have to get a job. If you believe in markets, this should fill you with joy.
This is what we've been promised by the market's story: a world where the right to allocate capital arises due to your track record of excellence, not due to which orifice you emerged from.

Frigerio Design Group wins the competition for designing the ecological transition of Enel power plant in Venice.
It’s part of Enel’s project to convert their coal power plants in Italy, the contest “The new energy spaces” to design the power stations of the future. Frigerio Design Group’s project has been selected for the new plant in the lagoon of Venice: an architecture that integrates research, training, information and recycling, to stimulate environmentally sustainable development and regeneration.
Fusina (Venice, Italy) | Convert all coal-fired power plants located in Italy into environmentally sustainable facilities: this is the goal set by Enel – Italian multinational manufacturer and distributor of electricity and gas – by 2025. On conclusion of the competition “New Energy Spaces”, set up by the company last July, the winning project was announced for the transformation of the Andrea Palladio power plant in Fusina (Venice). The project by Frigerio Design Group, “Resilience Lab Grid”, was selected by a committee made up of representatives from Enel, the University of Venice IUAV, and the City and County of Venice, according to criteria based on environmental and social sustainability, technological innovation, design and visual impact.
Two major factors in the competition were the new buildings, with areas open to the public to foster social and cultural development in the territory, and the legacy constructions that needed development to enhance the aesthetic and symbolic value of the plant, thereby modernizing and redeveloping the industrial zone.
The concept presented by Frigerio Design Group will now move on to the development phase. The architectural study of the Resilience Lab Grid proposes a paradigm shift in the collective perception by transforming the plant into a positive example for ecosystem regeneration and protection. Inspired by the “fractal”, a natural geometric element, Frigerio Design Group created a shared space, open to the public and the community, where activities focusing on sustainability and environmental intervention are promoted to stimulate regeneration and environmentally sustainable, besides social and cultural development for the area. At the same time, the architectural elements are integrated into the territory: the complex is designed to appear visibly dynamic and light in relation to the surrounding landscape.
“New Energy Spaces was designed to regenerate the environment and enhance corporate image and identity, while at the same time becoming more involved in the local community. Putting together people and nature, environment and industry, technology and innovation, the expression of a new entrepreneurial culture. Sharing values to generate value!” states lead architect, Enrico Frigerio. “For too long we have used only: in this day and age it is clear that simply using things and scarce resources will have a major impact on our future. What better chance to rethink our outlook than in places considered the archetype of consumption, here studied to approach new options, to give essence to a collective plan to rethink our future?”
“This competition is a tangible example of our vision for the future of energy, which needs to be planned out and realized in an open and shared manner,” explains Carlo Tamburi, President and CEO of Enel Italia, adding “with this project, the Fusina energy hub, which will expand its technology to facilitate energy transition, will become an area open to the local community, a space able to be in harmony with the landscape and be perfectly integrated into the surrounding environment.”
“While Venice celebrates its 1,600 years since its foundation, it is still looking toward its future,” comments Luigi Brugnato, Mayor of Venice, and points out “converting the Fusina plant from coal to an energy hub confirms that we are a cutting-edge territory in the challenge of energy transition and that Venice can attract investment and new jobs by focusing on sustainable technologies.”
The Frigerio Design Group Project: Resilience Lab Grid
The intervention envisaged by Frigerio Design Group is inspired by the “fractal”, a natural geometric element, whose form does not vary when changing the scale of length. Based on a feasible and modular system, the new buildings will be of different sizes according to their function; however, they will share the same features. The core generator and control room of the entire system is the Enel Pavilion, a place for reception, information and promotion for corporate values: environmental sustainability, circular economy and innovation.
The architecture is located in an environment where the lagoon borders the countryside, between water and land, and the project is inspired by the natural matrix of the area. “Patterns” of fields and cultivated lands are reinterpreted abstractly into geometrical elements enveloping buildings and plants. An additional element to blend with the lagoon is vegetation. It is inserted into the project as a junction between the industrial complex and the natural environment. Reviving the lagoon landscape with its evocative sandbars becomes an opportunity to illustrate the territory and include it in an educational context.

Born in Turin, Enrico Frigerio graduated from the University of Genova with a degree in Architecture and went on to become a part of Renzo Piano’s workshop, where he worked alongside Mr. Piano and learned the trade. In 1991, he founded Frigerio Design Group and made quality and the environment its primary objective.

The Unsustainability of the Current Capitalist System
Over the past few decades, through experiments such as Biosphere 2, scientists have found that earth’s resources are generally irreplaceable, even with technology. Therefore, people need to take responsibility for their role in environmental degradation and switch to new systems and ways of life to preserve the earth before it is too late. In the U.S. and worldwide, many people do not take action against climate change under the guise of supporting the economy. In other words, limits on development and resource usage in the name of the environment are viewed as hindrances on economic growth. However, the environment and the economy are not mutually exclusive. The economy depends on the land both directly (lumber) and indirectly (nutrient cycling), and it cannot exist without it. Unfortunately, many business and political leaders fail to realize this and continue to implement policies and perform practices that further degrade the natural world.
Currently, we are living in a system with unsustainable economic growth. The U.S.’s economy, along with many other countries’, is a high-throughput system. High-quality matter and energy resources are converted into an abundance of wastes, pollution, and low-quality heat, degrading the environment, and the human economy is seen as separate from nature, rather than a subset of it. Corporations care little about the consequences of their actions because they are not held accountable. Even more disheartening, consumers ignorantly purchase and stay in a “consumer bubble.” According to Ernest Partridge, “It appears that the American public is behaving ever more as a marketplace of consumers, and ever less as a polity—a community of citizens.” In my experience, I see people around me buying from fast fashion companies, including SHEIN. Clothing production creates massive amounts of waste, and shipping further degrades the environment. Not only that, many of these companies’ workers labor in slave-like conditions. Some people I have spoken to argue that they cannot afford other clothing and that there is “no ethical consumption under capitalism.” However, these people are just trying to hide the fact that they simply do not care. This year, I have purchased no retail clothing, and in the past couple of years, I can count on one hand the amount of retail I have purchased. Instead, I go to thrift shops where there is even more affordable, better quality clothing that does not damage the environment. People need to begin caring about other beings, and although it might be easier to continue living unsustainably as blind consumers, it is better for all of us to be more aware of our actions.
Encouraging people to care about the environment can sometimes take the form of valuing resources economically. After all, our economies are deeply entwined with the natural world, so if we put a price on natural services, perhaps more people will care. In the study “The value of the world’s ecosystem services and natural capital,” researchers valued the entire biosphere at an average of $33 trillion per year. The global gross national product total pales in comparison, averaging about $18 trillion per year. Many people only see value in goods, services, etc. if they hold some financial worth. Therefore, this method can give ecological services more weight in policy decisions and cause more people to care about degrading them. Certainly, financially valuing the environment can be controversial. How can we put a price tag on something so precious as pollination or culture? However, in order for progress to take place right now, we must turn to methods such as these to attract more people to support environmental policy.
Working under the capitalist system to improve the environment can have positive effects. The sustainable business model is becoming more popular to reduce environmental impacts of companies. The company Amana Katu presents an interesting case (Lacerda Fernandes et al. 2021). The Brazilian Amazon region has an abundance of fresh water; however, a large amount of the Brazilian population does not have access to quality drinking water. Therefore, Amana Katu partnered with NGOs, corporations, the government, and universities and leaned on the concept of a circular economy in order to create a sustainable business model and produce rainwater catchment systems. The business model touches upon the three aspects of sustainability (environmental, social, and economic), and it has been a successful venture, both for those running the company and the entire community. Certainly, this model can be applied to businesses whose product/service does not directly serve the community. If more companies strive to meet the triple bottom line and advance sustainable economic development, they can decrease or even eliminate the harm they do to the environment, without taking a hit economically. Making one’s business more sustainable is also favorable from a public relations standpoint, and as the earth warms up, more and more people are going to turn to businesses who actually care about their impacts on the world. Therefore, it is economically important to switch to a more sustainable business model in this aspect as well.
The ultimate solution for unrestrained and unsustainable economic growth across the world would be a shift to new economic systems. In Aude, France, alternative economies have risen in the form of small-scale organic farming and production (Gowan and Slocum 2014). The communities are sustainable, and people residing there “live relatively simply, finding primary fulfillment not in profits but in what they do: the ethical, communal, and aesthetic characteristics of production are ends in and of themselves.” This reality differs greatly from other areas of France and especially the U.S., and these communities are on quite a small scale. However, they can inspire us to live better and in a less materialistic manner. Their methods can even be instituted in our own communities to some degree to rely less on imports and other unsustainable means of food production and consumption. However, a change in many people’s morals would be necessary to facilitate more radical shifts such as a steady-state economy.
Environmental law can be used to regulate the economy and hold corporations accountable for environmental degradation. This sector of the law governs air and water quality, resource sustainability, and more. Correcting market failures falls under environmental law in some cases, and people must ensure that environmental issues are taken into account when considering economic expansion and development. Unfortunately, in the U.S., as well as other areas around the world, interest groups heavily influence the actions of officials. They may offer jobs after an individual leaves an agency, campaign donations, and more in order to receive favorable regulations. For example, the Trump administration’s EPA completely weakened chemical regulations in favor of chemical companies. These newly uncontrolled chemicals pose a threat to human health and nature as a whole, yet the EPA took the side of private interests instead. It is frustrating that we are supposed to live in a democracy, a government for the people, by the people, but we are all at the mercy of oligarchic overlords.
Humans must immediately take steps to prevent further unsustainable business practices and environmental degradation in general. Because many people do not care for the environment for moral reasons, the government must implement policies to curb these issues. In general, those in power should follow the precautionary principle. This means that when there is evidence that an action is harmful to human health or the environment, actions must be taken to prevent further damage, even if the issue or connection is not fully confirmed scientifically. This is controversial, and many individuals do not want their actions restricted “just in case.” However, we must follow this principle if we want to be proactive in slowing climate change. Time is running out, and if something seems like an issue, we should stop it before the problem grows. For example, with Freons, the government did not enforce regulations for a long time and only did when the ozone layer had already severely deteriorated. If only something had been done earlier.
Corporations must work to become more sustainable and follow the triple bottom line principle, balancing economic, environmental, and social needs of companies to reduce or eliminate their effects on the environment. However, it is unlikely that many businesses will move to becoming more sustainable on their own. After all, degrading the environment is easy and quite profitable. Therefore, the government needs to implement heavy regulations that require them to switch their practices. These regulations can include limiting the number of natural resources a company can take and introducing high taxes on emissions, which would pose an economic burden on businesses if they do not switch to better models. Germany’s economy became significantly more sustainable by imposing regulations early on and giving companies time to come up with their own solutions to the new regulations. Today, these businesses run on a much more ecologically friendly basis, and they have emerged as innovators in green technology and sustainable business.
This is a common idea throughout many of my blog posts, but it is integral that the U.S. government changes its recipients of subsidies. Currently, many nonrenewable energy companies receive significant subsidies, which lower their prices. However, if these subsidies are transferred to the renewable energy industry, more companies will participate in the production of clean energy, and more companies will be willing to purchase this inexpensive energy. Along with this, the government should introduce full-cost pricing, thus accounting for the environmental impacts of energy sources like coal. If this is implemented, nonrenewable energy prices will significantly increase, and this energy will become economically unsustainable, thus forcing certain energy producers to switch to cleaner methods. A feed-in tariff system like Germany’s could make the renewable energy industry more accessible and thus more successful. Furthermore, green fees on gasoline should be instituted to lessen people’s usage of gas-guzzling automobiles. This is an example of full-cost pricing, and a heavy tax would cover the environmental costs of extracting and using it. In addition, taxes would be reduced or removed on income, wealth, and more. Implementing these fees nationwide would be an incentive for many consumers to use less gas, purchase fuel-efficient, hybrid, and electric cars, and use public transportation, bike, and walk.
Government policies establishing eco-labeling requirements could cause consumers to think more about their purchases and buy more sustainable options. Items would be marked according to their impact on the environment, including pollution, pesticide use, and more. If this became a standard, like with nutrition labels, more people would buy from ecologically-friendly companies. In addition, more businesses would switch to green means of production in order to better their image and increase sales. This is an initiative that could start on the local, then state, and finally national level in order to gain support.
As a whole, citizens need to hold the government accountable for its actions and its systems. The EPA must be reformed in order to serve people better. In a previous blog post, I spoke about the prevalence of Superfund sites in Newark, NJ. The EPA eventually became involved in the struggle, yet the agency did not do much at all. It stated that a site was too toxic to be cleaned by the standard methods, so it did not touch it. Meanwhile, marginalized people are risking their health living and working near the site daily. There is an outstanding lack of care by the EPA and many other federal agencies when it comes to human health and environmental degradation, and individuals must call out these groups when injustice occurs. Campaign finance laws also need to be reformed because they are the root of many government officials refusing to keep the best interest of the people in mind. Instead of caring about their lives, state actors listen to the corporate interests that bankrolled their campaigns, and limitations on funding must be implemented to prevent further corruption.
At Fordham University, it is our job as students to make this campus more sustainable since the administration is lackadaisical when it comes to environmental issues. Instituting a green fee in the tuition is a great first place to start in order to provide funding specifically for sustainability efforts. In addition, Fordham needs to divest its endowment from fossil fuels. No amount of solar panels or LEED-certified buildings can erase the fact that the school is actively contributing to the destruction of the planet, and the administration must be held accountable in this respect. Reinvesting in renewable energy is a better idea. Furthermore, the school must separate itself from Aramark. The corporation has a laundry list of human rights and environmental abuses, and it is getting paid the big bucks to serve us terrible food. As mentioned in a previous blog, I am working on the Rams Against Aramark committee to try to remove this corporation’s influence from our school.
In my eyes, it seems unlikely that a moral revolution will take place regarding the environment, at least before it is too late. Therefore, we must take other steps to regulate those who are destroying our planet, launching campaigns and slapping them with fines and maybe even jail sentences.

Reclaimed Materials Add More Than Just Decorative Value
Reclaimed materials are a hot interior design trend. They are used in everything from rustic dining room tables and wooden headboards to vintage stained glass windows, but rescued materials have a bigger story to tell. The fabric of old homes is actually being reused to meet environmental and sustainability goals. Instead of demolishing old buildings, their parts are being deconstructed, reused, and recycled. Read on to discover how advancing to a circular economy through green building practices will help spur local economies.
Mitigates climate change
Though our primary focus has been tackling the pandemic, the impending threat of climate change still looms in the background. Reclaimed wood specifically is a renewable resource, as it reduces the number of new trees harvested and cut down. According to studies out of Metro Vancouver, it is estimated that “deconstruction can keep at least 80% of building material waste out of landfills.[i]”
Not every material can be reused, but the process of deconstruction allows parts to be easily sorted and recycled. It may surprise you to know just how much building material can be reused or recycled. Appliances, moldings, electrical equipment, countertops, bricks, glass, and light fixtures are just a couple on a long list of reusable items. Things like carpet, drywall, and plastic pipe cannot be reused, but they can be recycled. By using reclaimed items in your home, you can personally take a step to save the world's resources!
Increases affordable housing
Rapid population growth has created an affordable housing crisis in many major cities. The costs of supplies and building materials are just some of the things that drive up the price of new homes. A low-income individual should not have to settle for a home of inferior quality. Using cheap materials to drive down construction costs creates safety, maintenance, and resale risks. Natural disasters are happening more frequently, and homes have to be built to withstand high winds and flooding.
Reusable materials dramatically reduce the costs of new homes, while also providing durable products. Some programs allow residents and community members to construct parts of homes themselves, while given technical assistance. Initiatives like these help to develop community pride and camaraderie, while also solving challenges caused by inequality.
Financially benefits communities
Deconstructing a home takes much more time and effort than demolishing one. This may seem like a negative factor until you consider the new jobs that will be created for this specific task. Deconstructors will have to know how to disassemble a home, identify parts, and sort materials. The ability to be specially trained in deconstruction will help displaced laborers readily find new jobs in this tough economy. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the reclaimed materials industry is expected to grow faster than the U.S. economy overall in the next 10 years[ii].
The materials from demolished homes go straight to the landfill, but when a home is deconstructed, the parts can be sold on-site to local businesses, manufacturers, and property owners. This process keeps money in the community and combats the financial and environmental costs of transportation.
Finally, homes with sustainable materials are often able to reap tax incentives and have a higher resale value. According to a recent study, homes with a sustainability certification sold, on average, for eight percent more than non-certified homes[iii].
Provides honest connections
Reclaimed materials have taken the home goods marketplace by storm. Interior designers and television influencers continuously use recycled wood and glass on home makeover shows, and everywhere from large-scale retailers to small boutiques carries reclaimed decor products. Buyers love owning something fashionable, but even more so, they love possessing something with a past life that carries a story. Reclaimed wood also has a reputation for being more durable depending on its age. Long ago, trees were allowed to grow untouched for centuries. The wood that was harvested for homes was older and therefore tougher than the wood from young trees that we harvest today.
Using reclaimed materials also provides a feel-good moment. Many homeowners report emotions of sadness and disappointment when their homes are demolished and the materials are thrown away. Demolishing homes also releases lead dust and pollutants in the air, which negatively impacts surrounding neighbors. Homeowners can experience less guilt by reducing their carbon footprint through the reuse of their old materials.

Announcing the Winners of the CGSNY Student Poster Design Competition
2020 has been a difficult year for everybody, particularly so for students whose job and paid internship prospects plummeted due to COVID-19. As a gesture of support, the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York (CGSNY) launched a poster design competition in partnership with Poster House. Students were asked to create an original work that uses the Swiss Grid Style as their primary design tool. The three selected winners all created unique and intriguing designs which will be presented in an exhibition this spring in the Consulate’s lobby along with a selection of other student works.
Aita Pult, the head of the Cultural Affairs Section at CGSNY sat down with our first place winner, Maya Rodgers, for a conversation about her design and how she incorporated the Swiss Grid Style. Included below are also statements by our winners, reflecting on the inspiration behind their works and their integrations of the Swiss Grid Style.

Maya Rodgers / Ithaca College – First Place
The intention behind this poster was to create a simple, Swiss Grid inspired design that revolved around the weather in a city of one’s choice. Inspired by the circular motions of the Montreal Ferris Wheel paired with the “partly cloudy” weather that day, I used a grid system to create this poster. With shades of blue and circle elements paired with Helvetica Neue typeface, I wanted to emphasize the repetition and structure that the grid brings to design. The type is slightly obstructed by the transparent circle elements, which reiterates the weather “partly cloudy.”
STILL THE SUN RISES, Photography by Julia Muller
Julia Muller / Farmingdale State College – Second Place
I was inspired by Swiss Style posters from the 1970s when choosing the color palette and geometric design. The orange gradient circles represent the warmth of a sunset while the cool toned circle represents the sun rising. Without the circle in the top right, the design would be left feeling quite unbalanced; just like a sunrise and sunset, they need each other to exist.
The message of this poster is inspired by this past year. In 2020, things did not turn out how anyone could have ever expected. We have all been through a lot and it is important that we remember that no matter what we face in the day, we can wake up the next morning and start fresh. I created this as a reminder that we are not stuck in the days of the past and there are opportunities to try again. Every night the sun sets and some nights are darker than others, but it continues to rise again each morning, just like us.
PERSEVERANCE, Photography Exhibition by Kestin Mica by Niki Ito
Niki Ito / City University of New York – Third Place
The design was inspired by a hypothetical photography exhibition for the American photographer Kestin Mica and the simplified geometric format of the Swiss International Typographic style. The exhibition titled PERSEVERANCE takes place in Tokyo on April 20, 2021. The layout is based on a grid system which complements the photographic narrative of this exhibition. The photography follows the story of perseverance through the photographer’s journey, as shown in the withering flowers.
The composition was intended to unify important information using the Swiss Grid as a guide, while playfully composing typography to complement elements within the photograph. The words “kestin mica” extends the horizon line of the photograph. The “OTO” of the word “PHOTO” is blurred like the flower in the foreground, while “mica wired” is in focus similar to the flower in the background to complement the existing spaces within the photograph.

Having said this, you may be wondering, “But where do I start?” From tools you need for cutting, finishing, assembling, and measuring, to those that can hold wooden parts while the raw materials are being worked on to create finished products, we understand deciding what you need as a beginner woodworker can be overwhelming.
Do not fret! This article will provide a step-by-step guide to all the resources you need to get started with woodworking. Let’s briefly go over a few of the must-have tools that every beginner woodworker must have in their toolbox.
Saws
The first step in almost every woodworking project is the cutting process. You will need to cut down raw wood pieces to different lengths to fix them into your desired model. Saws are the most commonly used tools for ripping and crosscutting wood stock and are made of a tough blade with a hard-toothed edge. There are various types of saws you may use depending upon the wood material and cutting procedure.
Circular Saw
It is an electric tool that consists of a round or circular blade with a sharp set of teeth protruding from its surface that tear through the wood. There are three types of circular saws, each performing a different function.
Ripping Blades: Cuts wood lengthwise along the grain
Crosscut Blades: Cuts wood across the grain
Combination Blades: Used for both ripping and crosscutting
Jigsaw
Also called a saber saw, a jigsaw is an essential component of every woodworker’s toolbox. This electric power tool is designed to make cuts that can be straight or curved. As opposed to the circular saw, a jigsaw blade cuts with a back and forth or up and down motion.
Table Saw
A table saw is designed like an upside-down circular saw as its blade protrudes from underneath the saw table or work surface. Its primary function is to make cuts not possible with other saw types. Since the table saw is used to produce the initial cuts, it is an integral part of any workshop. The professionals behind woodworkmag.com point out that due to its high frequency of use, there is always an underlying danger of fatal injury if not operated carefully. Hand Saw

This handheld vibrating tool gives the wood a finishing touch and makes the job much easier by taking the strain away from your hands. Vibrating in small circles or orbits, it leaves the wood ultra-smooth and mark-free.
Assembly Tools
The final to complete your woodworking project would be to assemble all the components into a finished product. Here are a couple of indispensable tools you would need initially:
Hammer
As one of the most essential woodworking tools, hammers are universally used to drive and remove nails, fit parts, or even break up objects. While there are several types of hammers, each designed for a specific purpose, there is nothing quite like the standard claw hammer that would fit all your needs as a beginner woodworker.
Power Drill
As you will be using this tool in almost every single project, a good quality drill can be your best friend as a beginner woodworker. While you can take a hammer and start pounding the nail, there is no guarantee of how many times you may strike your thumb with this approach.
An electric drill is a tool for the job that will allow you to easily screw pieces of wood together or drill holes of various sizes precisely. You would want to choose the versatile cordless power drill that can perform additional tasks, like stirring mortar and retracting screws quickly. Doing so will help you become more efficient in your woodworking tasks.
Since this is a beginner’s guide, it was only fair that we discussed the essentials that you will need to set sail on your woodworking voyage. When most people think about woodworking, the first aspect that tickles their imaginations is the vast array of tools that are required to get going. Mega projects transforming Bangladesh economy
Country to achieve high mid-income country status by 2041
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 12: It is often said that infrastructure-megaprojects are crucial drivers for accelerating economic growth in a developing country like Bangladesh where average GDP growth in the last eleven years (2008-2019) is nearly 7% per annum.
This economic growth is usually required both for capital accumulation to fund the mega projects and to earn the benefits of these projects for boosting the growth rate in two digit number.
Even before the 'Agenda 2030' was adopted, the present government in Bangladesh under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina envisaged implementing a few mega projects in Bangladesh to deliver the economic and social goods for millions of people in different parts of Bangladesh and to create the economic growth that will benefit the population.
It is expected that these large infrastructural undertakings and mega projects would transform the country's communications, transportation, ports and energy scenario by 2030 and help the country to achieve high mid-income country status by 2041.
Padma Multipurpose Bridge A self-funded project of Bangladesh government worth $ 3.65 billion, the 6.1 km double-deck bridge is expected to be open for traffic by 2022 connecting southern part of Bangladesh with the capital city as well as eastern part of the country. As of 10 December 2020, around 90% of the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge has been completed. The bridge will have road and rail linkages in two separate decks. China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd, has been selected to construct the long aspired bridge on the river Padma. It is expected that the construction of the bridge will comprehensively transform the pace of economy in the region improving lives of millions of people on the both sides of the river.
Matarbari Deep Sea Port Bangladesh exports worth nearly $ 40bn and imports of goods worth nearly $ 60bn majority of which carried through seaways. Presently, the country's two seaports– Chittagong and Mongla — have up to 9.5-metre where draft vessels holding up to 2,000 teu can anchor. Bangladesh planned to develop its first deep-sea port as part of a publicprivate partnership with Japan. Matarbari deep seaport will have a 16-meter water draft and will be able to accommodate 8,000 teu post-Panamax vessels, lessening Bangladesh's dependence on the feeder vessels to ferry export-import goods from the hub ports in Singapore, Colombo and Port Klang. Matarbari deep sea port will be made functional by 2025.
Payra Deep Sea Port The construction work of Payra Deep Sea Port has been going rapidly since 2016. Payra will have rail, road, and waterway links with the capital of Dhaka, around which most of the country's garment industry is based and which by extension is the primary destination for imports and origin point for exports. The total cost of the port is estimated to be 11- 15 billion USD. Once deep-sea port is built, the neighboring India, Nepal and Bhutan can make use of this port while it facilitates the domestic economy with faster export and import activities. The port will be fully operational by 2023.
Dhaka Metrorail Project It is a part of the 20-year long Strategic Transport Plan (STP) outlined by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), a governmental agency. With an aim to provide a safe, fast, affordable and modern means of transportation for the city dweller, the project will have total 8 lanes connecting different parts of Dhaka City. Presently, 20.1 kilometers long Line 6, costing $ 2.8 billion is under construction. Each train will hold up to 1800 passengers. With 56 trains to be in service by 2021, Dhaka Metro is projected to serve more than 60,000 passengers per hour by 2021, with wait times of approximately 4 minutes. The entire route will be able to be traveled in less than 40 minutes at a speed of 100 km / h (62 mph). The project is expected to be completed by 2021.
Dhaka Elevated Expressway Dhaka Elevated Expressway is Bangladesh's first elevated expressway project. It is one of the largest infrastructure projects taken up by the incumbent government to ease traffic congestion in the capital. It will be 46.73 km long including the connecting roads and will cost around US $ 1.4 billion. The Italian-Thai Development Corporation Limited has entered a $ 1.062 billion contract with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) for building the Dhaka Elevated Expressway. It is expected that the project might be completed by 2022.
Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will be a 2.4 GW nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. It will be the country's first nuclear power plant and the commissioning of unit 1 is planned in 2022 while the commissioning of Unit 2 is planned in 2023. The VVER- 1200/523 Nuclear reactor and critical infrastructure are being built by the Russian Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation. The project will provide low-cost electricity and create new jobs in Bangladesh. The power production in Bangladesh currently exceeds 4GW a year. The new plant will increase the country's power production and enable it to achieve energy independence. Karnaphuli Underwater Tunnel Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation of Karnaphuli Underwater Tunnel worth $ 2.49 billion in 2016. The boring work beneath the tunnel has been inaugurated by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in February 2019. The 3.5km-long four-lane tunnel, the first of its kind in Bangladesh and region, will be built to make the port city of Chittagong “One City Two Towns,” based on a model of East and West Shanghai in China. The construction of the Karnaphuli Tunnel is expected to bolster industrial development, enhance tourism, and expand trade and commerce near the project area, creating employment for thousands of people and boosting exports and there will be a very positive impact on the total economy of the country .
Other prospective Mega Projects Dhaka-Chittagong Express Way (rail or road), Circular Road around Dhaka City, Construction of an International Airport in the center of Bangladesh, Dhaka Underground Train / Tube Rail and Construction of second bridge on river Padma are a few of the other prospective mega projects that are in the offing in Bangladesh and for which opportunities exist for direct foreign investment. Bangladesh's development story, especially implementation of the on-going and future mega projects, has earned it the reputation in the region as a hot spot for global investment. The role of these mega infrastructure projects is expected to be fundamental in the overall national development process as they will contribute positively in employment generation, connectivity, regional trade, economic integration as well as energy security of the country. With the completion of the mega-projects the government envisages the economy to grow at a faster, which in turn will foster longterm sustainable development.

Punjab govt, banking consortium sign Rs100b power generation accord LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar chaired the ceremony of signing Rs100 billion financing agreement between the Punjab Thermal Power (Pvt) Ltd. of 1263 megawatt capacity and a consortium of six banks at a local hotel on Thursday to generate ten billion units every year. Provincial Secretary Finance Abdullah Sumbal signed the agreement. Addressing the ceremony, the Chief Minister termed the agreement the largest sovereign guarantee in the history of the country and congratulated provincial ministers Hashim Jawan Bakht, Dr Akhtar Malik and others. GSA and PPA agreements have been signed despite slackness in business activities due to corona onslaught, he maintained. The Punjab Thermal Power Plant was speedily completed and electricity would be generated by the end of 2021, he said. Meanwhile, 7 thousand government offices have been converted to solar energy, including 6,991 primary schools and a DHQ hospital. By the mid of next year, the government will complete Chianwali and Deg-outfall Hydropower Projects, he announced. He further announced to early complete the conversion of 10,861 schools and 2,324 BHUs to solar energy. In addition to the installation of one thousand megawatt capacity power plant in Rojhan, solar and biogas hydropower plants will also be installed in Vehari and Samundri, the CM added. The government is also vigorously pursuing the generation of 150-megawatt energy through waste-to-energy projects. Instead of expensive electricity generation, the Chief Minister maintained the incumbent government is giving attention to alternate energy sources and hydral power plants. It has been planned to complete the most of energy projects through the private sector to provide cheap electricity to the people facing the issue of price-hike, he added and held Punjab will not only be energy self-sufficient but would also provide electricity to other provinces. Energy Minister Dr Akhtar Malik said the journey of bringing real wwchange is continuous and the change process in Punjab will be soon visible in the whole of the country. CM CHAIRS RS 100 BILLION FINANCING AGREEMENT CEREMONY BETWEEN PUNJAB THERMAL POWER AND BANKING CONSORTIUM
LAHORE, December 17:
Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar chaired the ceremony of signing Rs100 billion financing agreement between the Punjab Thermal Power (Pvt) Ltd. of 1263 megawatt capacity and a consortium of six banks at a local hotel on Thursday to generate ten billion units every year. Provincial Secretary Finance Abdullah Sumbal signed the agreement.
Addressing the ceremony, the CM termed the agreement the largest sovereign guarantee in the history of the country and congratulated provincial ministers Hashim Jawan Bakht, Dr Akhtar Malik and others. GSA and PPA agreements have been signed despite slackness in business activities due to corona onslaught, he maintained. The Punjab Thermal Power Plant was speedily completed and electricity would be generated by the end of 2021, he said.

CM CHAIRS 39TH CABINET MEETING
LAHORE, December 17:
The 39th cabinet meeting was held under the chair of Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar at CM’s Office today. The meeting gave approval to further extend the lease of state land in Cholistan and Rahim Yar Khan on previous rates to the President of UAE. This initiative of the Punjab cabinet will further strengthen the ties between both the countries. The meeting gave principle approval of five billion rupees loan to the Ravi Urban Development Authority for acquiring the land. Moreover, the meeting also approved for providing state land for the master plan of Ravi RiverFront Urban Development Project. Authority will present its business plan and financial model for this purpose. Vice Chairman LDA Sheikh Muhammad Imran and Chairman of the Authority Rashid Aziz gave the briefing to the cabinet about Ravi River Front Urban Development Project. The cabinet simplifies the long process of issuance of NOCs for installing petrol pumping in the province by reducing the issuance period from 90 days to 30 days. Punjab cabinet, under 3 per cent special quota for visually impaired persons has also approved to give special relaxation in upper age limit in the employment. The Punjab cabinet again rejected the proposal of getting charges in major hospitals. Usman Buzdar while addressing the meeting said that PTI government has come into power for providing relief to a common man and user charges cannot be reconsidered right now. The cabinet also gave approval for the equal syllabus throughout the province. The meeting, in the light of decision of honourable court and under Rule 17-A, gave approval of recruitment on permanent basis. The meeting also gave approval the pay package and terms and conditions for the vice chancellors of different medical universities of Punjab. Transfer policy 2020 of the Special Education Department was approved in the meeting. Under this policy, teachers and other staff will be transferred near to their residents. Seed money of Rs10 crore from the Punjab government for the endowment fund of National Tourism Coordination Board/Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation was approved by the meeting. Land User Plans Rules 2020 were also got approval in the meeting for using Punjab Local Governments’ lands. Payment issue of construction of 410-bed civil hospital in Bahawalpur was referred to the Cabinet Standing Committee for Finance & Development which will present the final recommendations after reviewing all the matter. The matter of provision of land for setting up Children Hospital in Gujranwala was also referred to the Board of Revenue. The cabinet meeting also gave approval to the appointment of two members namely Hassan Ahmed Riaz Advocate and Khalid Mehmood Chaudhry in Lahore Development Authority Tribunal. Approval was granted to appoint in-service Judge Habib Ullah Amir for the post of judicial member for the Appellant Tribunal of Punjab Revenue Authority. The meeting directed to review the matters of Director General Punjab Agriculture, Food & Drug Authority. The concerned departments will again present their recommendations after reviewing the matters of the authority. The meeting postponed the amendment in University of Agriculture Faisalabad Act 1973 Section 21 and agenda with regard to Higher Education Commission Punjab. The meeting also postponed the appointment of CEO of Punjab Industrial Estates Development & Management Company. Punjab Chief Minister and Cabinet welcome the new ministers Syed Yawer Bukhari and Khiyal Ahmed Kastro in the meeting. Provincial Ministers, Advisors, Special Advisors, Chief Secretary and Secretaries of the concerned departments participated in the meeting.

#PHnews: Tourism workforce urged to avail DOT-DOLE financial assistance
MANILA – The Department of Tourism (DOT) is reaching out to tourism workers who were affected by the closure of establishments or those which scaled down operations, to immediately avail of the expanded financial assistance as part of the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act interventions to address the pandemic’s impact on Philippine tourism.
Under a Joint Advisory between the DOT and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), titled Expanded Coverage of Beneficiaries Under DOLE-DOT Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) No. 2020-001, the financial assistance program now extends to:
1) beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Social Amelioration Program (SAP) and Covid-19 Adjustment Measures Program (CAMP) under Bayanihan 1;
2) workers of affected establishments that implemented flexible work arrangements or alternative work schemes; and,
3) LGU-licensed secondary tourism enterprises.
"This initiative will widen the scope of recipients of this financial assistance program and accommodate those who have already availed of existing programs open to the tourism sector. Hopefully, the program’s take-up rate significantly improves to reach more members of the micro-, small- and medium-enterprises (MSMEs) and more importantly, those belonging to the informal sector,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat said.
The tourism chief urged the tourism enterprises, associations and local government units (LGUs) to help in providing the necessary documentary requirements for their affected employees or members.
The expanded coverage also allows for the issuance by the DOT of training vouchers to endorsed tour guide associations or groups for the conduct of a relevant training for its qualified members no later than 30 June 2021. In effect, the tour guide applicant may already avail of the financial assistance prior to the DOT-spearheaded training to be undertaken within the prescribed period.
The Joint Advisory further deems valid and enforceable the other provisions of the DOLE-DOT Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2020-001.
As provided for in the Joint Memorandum Circular, the following persons remain as the primary beneficiaries of the program:
Displaced DOT-accredited and local government unit (LGU)-licensed tour guides;
Displaced employees of DOT-accredited Primary Tourism Enterprises;
Displaced employees of DOT-accredited Secondary Tourism Enterprises;
LGU-Licensed Primary Tourism Enterprises (primary tourism enterprises, and tourism trainers that are not accredited by DOT but are registered by their LGUs); and
Members of registered Community-Based Tourism Organizations (CBTOs) (organized groups in a community exclusively serving tourists in an attraction or destination duly registered with the relevant National Government Agency or the relevant LGU).
“We continue to assist our LGUs in slowly opening their tourism destinations in order to restore businesses, livelihood and jobs. Meanwhile, we hope that this program, along with other COVID-related schemes of assistance, will be warmly welcomed by our workers to tide them over this Christmas,” Puyat added. (PR)
