Just a few days before our interview, Jill’s (Ed: not her real name) immunologist sent her to the hospital to rule out pulmonary embolism, which happens when a blood clot gets stuck in an artery of the lung. In Jill’s case it would be a Long COVID symptom amongst many others she had been battling over the last year: including swelling around the tissue of her heart, memory deficits, sudden heart-rate surges, fatigue and abnormal kidney test results.
By that point, she’d had COVID four times, despite taking stringent precautions. She was born with a primary immune deficiency. And, without a fully functioning immune system she needs weekly injections of human immunoglobulins from plasma donations. A very small viral load can make her sick and she’s at a much higher risk of severe outcomes from COVID than most people.
“Every time I catch it, it adds new layers to my disabilities,” she says. “COVID is slowly killing me.” Her haematologist believes the past COVID infections have further damaged her immune system. She is looking at a possible lupus diagnosis.
Her voice is raspy and soft over the phone. She pauses when I ask how she is doing.
“Well, I got COVID,” she says. “Again.”
At the hospital appointment several nurses were not wearing their masks properly, and one kept pulling it down to talk with Jill, who had to remove hers to get her lungs checked. As someone who is very isolated with her family — everyone works and goes to school from home — Jill believes that the appointment led to her most recent infection.
She’s always been careful with her health but in the past, she worked in the school system. By 2020 she moved to a remote position and at that time still had many options for safely connecting with those around her and she could attend health-care appointments without concern. About a year ago, nearly all restrictions were lifted in Alberta and that’s when she got her first COVID infection.
Three years in, nearly everyone she knows has moved on including — most bafflingly to her — many of the medical professionals she sees. But, Jill says, moving on is not a privilege afforded to people like her.
Recently, PCR testing became inaccessible to health-care providers, who, in the past, were able to test regularly. And while Alberta Health Services (AHS) still requires masks, any health-care settings outside AHS can make their own rules. So, once masking was no longer mandated in public settings, many dropped requirements — this includes many of the specialists seeing immunocompromised people, including those Jill now sees due to Long COVID.
“The variants have been left to run rampant and I have really become more and more scared,” she says.
“Governments are saying: Oh we can re-open because we have all these tools. But they are not available to the immunocompromised population. So, the monoclonal antibodies are no longer effective against the current variants. Because the variants are so immune-based, the vaccines were never particularly effective for immunocompromised people because of the nature of our immune systems.”
As well, Jill says that there are many contraindicated drugs that cannot be taken with Paxlovid, the drug which is used to treat COVID patients in specific circumstances. According to Health Canada, Paxlovid “is used in adults to treat mild to moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients who have a positive result from a severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 viral test and who have a high risk of getting severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death.”
She still takes the vaccines with hopes they will help, and while she believes Paxlovid is saving her life with this current infection, she says it is not a guarantee against more Long COVID symptoms. And, for the infection prior to the current one, the drug was not available due to a kidney infection caused by the virus.
“I have to access my medication, my health care. And by people not masking around me, I have no way to protect myself,” she says. “If you don’t want to wear masks as a society then you are going to leave the immunocompromised people behind.” And she says many high risk people are not able to work from home, or have their kids in online classes or maybe struggle to afford masks or air purifiers — many social and financial issues make individual protections far more challenging or impossible. She is currently in a court battle with her ex.
“He wants increased access, in-person school and group extracurricular activities. All things that put me at higher risk of infection,” says Jill.
Recently, she went to her cardiologist to find that no patients or staff were masking.
“I really realize now I have to be my own advocate,” she says.
She has to constantly think ahead. So, she now calls beforehand to see if the appointment can be done remotely or if the staff can mask. She’s also decided to start carrying around a laminated sheet that explains her medical condition as it is often something she needs to repeat at each appointment or in the emergency room. 

Like many others, she’s found ways to navigate her way around a harrowing array of risks. And yet, even with all these precautions, she can not control the actions of others which can directly affect her health.
Holly (Ed: not her real name), is retired and lives in a small community just outside Edmonton. She’s currently thinking about her next visit to her doctor, who hasn’t been taking precautions from the beginning.
��It’s exhausting always trying to get around how there is no protection for us anymore,” she says. “I’m thinking why am I made to feel crazy when my own doctor won’t wear a mask? Won’t acknowledge that it’s airborne?”
But the worst part, she claims, was that he minimized the effects of COVID, saying it was rarely an issue and only affects a certain demographic. Holly does not believe that is true, but regardless it is of little comfort when her husband, who’s in his 70s, has chronic health complications.
“I think patients are rightfully concerned, particularly when they go in for health care,” says physician Neeja Bakshi. “I think the medical community should be doing whatever we can to protect those who are coming in.”
It’s true, she says, that hospitals are no longer overwhelmed, and fewer people are dying; there is less of an acute emergency. But COVID is still circulating, people are still dying, and Long COVID (aka post COVID-19 condition) should be on everyone’s radar.
Recently, the World Health Organization announced an end to the global health emergency. But it also said earlier that “one in 10 infections result in post COVID-19 condition suggesting that hundreds of millions of people will need longer term care.”
COVID can cause organ damage — particularly affecting the heart, kidneys, skin. Plus, there’s risk of brain and immune damage, along with increased risks for cancer and autoimmune disease.
And, while no one knows yet how long that damage could persist, a study published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine says 59 per cent of Long COVID patients had organ damage a year later.
In 2022, Bakshi started a Long COVID clinic at her health facility Park Integrative Health, treating patients from across Canada. Every week she completes upwards of 20 disability forms for people who need to take time off work due to the debilitating effects of Long COVID.
While certain health complications make Long COVID more likely, anyone can be affected regardless of the severity of their infection or the state of their health. The indiscriminate nature of COVID is one of the things that’s been most shocking to Bakshi. She’s treated a number of elite athletes who went from performing at a professional level to struggling to have enough energy to brush their teeth.
Many patients struggle with stigma not just from medical professionals but from family, friends and employers. It’s an invisible illness, says Bakshi, so patients may look fine and are often misdiagnosed as something psychosomatic.
“I’m immersed in the world. But I don’t feel like you can deny it exists. And I think it’s a bit of ignorance on the medical community’s part if they say they don’t know anything about Long COVID. There are very specific disease patterns and symptoms,” says Bakshi.
There is also a lack of support. The most proven management strategy for Long COVID or even any COVID infection is recovery and rest, says Bakshi. But that’s not possible for many people. Initially, in 2020, there was forced rest through quarantine periods, but that time off has become shorter, as employers don’t have to pay for employees to be off at all.
“We are not a society that is built on support. We’ve already set ourselves up to fail from a recovery perspective,” says Bakshi.
Jill has found validation in Bakshi’s clinic as one of her patients. But that experience stands out amongst a sea of specialists who have given up on precautions.
“Instead of recommending upgraded masks, air cleaners and UV, or working from home, immunologists that manage my condition recommend wearing a mask if you want and enjoying your life—as short as that may be. I am not sure if this is complacency, or giving up… Either way, education and change need to happen or far too many valuable lives will be lost and disabled unnecessarily,” says Jill.

Adventure Force Enforcer project (mostly done)
Current stats: ~160 FPS, 450 rounds per minute, 2 x 90 dart belt and boxes
I've made some progress over the winter and spring on the reliability and accuracy of the enforcer. I also added some cosmetic flair in the form of a maxim style barrel. I don't have any internal photos at the moment but most of the progress has been on the inside. The first of the changes was to the belt itself, in comparison to it's injection molded belt the 3D printed belt is a lot heavier. Why not use the injection molded belt? I could but it doesn't hold onto anything but brand new darts verry well and it's rigidity of the linkage preventing any flex outside of the hinge's intended direction can lead to jams. So to be able to use worn darts I still want to use a 3D printed belt. To help with the belt's weight I skeletonized it somewhat making it thinner in places it can afford to be while keeping the structurally important parts the same width. This reduced the weight of the links and helps to alleviate the primary cause of jams: the empty belt links piling up on top of the loaded belt links in the box. Another modification I added was a set of two ratcheting pawls that help prevent the cam track of the sprocket from slipping backwards when the cam stud is in the middle of it's travel. This stops the chain from getting stuck if there is too much force holding the chain back causing the can stud to slip into the previous groove mid travel and prevent the chain from advancing.
The second thing I spent a lot of time on refining was the flywheel cage as I wanted to tighten up the cone of fire as much as possible. I spent a week or two in a bit of a cycle. Get home, test fire the blaster, adjust the model in Fusion 360, print the model at night, sleep, go to work, repeat. The end result is that the flywheels are now angled 0.7 degrees left, and a roller is added to the right side of the cage to help better center the darts to the flywheels before firing. I have also replaced the motors with OOD Krakens, this results in a slight reduction to the FPS but the flywheels do a lot less damage to the darts and they ware out slower. So I'm not destroying as many of the clubs darts. (I have also been donating some darts to help offset the dart destruction I alone am causing)
Another thing I made that's not part of the blaster itself is the two flip out tabs that loop onto my belt. They're the same dimensions as the tab at the bottom of the blaster and allow the ammo boxes to clip onto them. This way I can carry a spare belt box much easier than I could previously. Previously I was using a strap with a backpack buckle on it to loop under the attachment part of the ammo box, but that was verry finicky and ended up being verry difficult to do on the field. These little devices make reloading while standing up a possibility as before I had to set one box on the ground while attaching the other. Now with the two tabs I can remove one box, clip it on to the empty tab, unclip the loaded box from the other tab, and then load the fresh box onto the blaster.

Ryan Edwards was back in court on Tuesday, once again facing Judge Gary Starnes in regard to his 2023 charges for possession of a controlled substance, DUI and other crimes. This time, however, Ryan had good news to report: the Teen Mom OG dad stated that he has been drug-free for one year…and that he recently secured himself a job (that doesn’t include an MTV camera crew!)
The Sun broke the news that Ryan attended his hearing (sporting a snappy purple polo shirt and black dress pants), with his aunt, mom Jen Edwards and girlfriend Amanda Conner in the courtroom for support.
During the quick hearing, Judge Starnes (who has been very, very lenient with Ryan over the past year or so) praised the ‘Teen Mom’ star for staying off the smack and keeping out of legal trouble in recent months.
“We’re here for a follow-up to see how you’re doing. I don’t see any probation violations,” Judge Starnes told Ryan during the hearing. “You have been drug-free for over a year. That’s an accomplishment. I’m glad you’re doing well.”
Ryan– who is undergoing counseling at the CADAS rehab center— has been getting monthly Vivitrol injections to help curb opioid dependence. At his last court hearing in January, Ryan was ordered to continue the injections, submit to random hair follicle tests and follow all recommended treatment requirements set forth in his post-treatment plan from CADAS.
According to Judge Starnes, Ryan has followed the rules. The judge also stated that he believes Ryan going to jail back in December has helped the reality TV star stay drug-free.
“I want you to stay with CADAS,” the judge said. “I know there hasn’t been any problems.”
The judge even revealed that Ryan now has a job, working at an automotive shop.
“Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re coming a long way, very well done. I know you’re happy,” he told Ryan, who also got praise from the District Attorney in the case.
This is not Ryan’s only current legal battle. He is also fighting his soon-to-be ex-wife Mackenzie in civil court for custody of their two kids. As The Ashley previously reported, Mackenzie was recently granted a two-year restraining order against Ryan after the ‘Teen Mom’ star repeatedly harassed her.
In a proposed parenting plan created by Ryan last month, Ryan asked for 50/50 custody of their kids Jagger and Stella, as well as child support, alimony and more from Mack. Ryan also asked the judge to make him the kids’ primary residential parent and to have “a lien be imposed on [Mackenzie’s] property to ensure the payment of any child support.”
Last month, Mackenzie stated on social media that Ryan “doesn’t support their kids” currently.
The couple’s court battle is ongoing.
Ryan is due back in court for his criminal charges on November 18.

"So we will be skipping your physical for today my lord? No test of physical reflex or measure of your heartbeat?" The narthecium pierced Mortarions daemonic flesh armour with ease and began extracting the rich divine ichor of his lord and master.

Small particles that may be tiny flies dance through the rays that the almost-sun casts obliquely through the thick skylights with tarnished transparisteel into Khorag Sinj's private laboratory. The heavy full lock shutters are pulled back and hang rustily from the sides of the ceiling. The heady smell of growth and death, of fungi and water is undisturbed by air flows. The Death Guard Apothecary's area is, in a way, even far more secure than the Chief Apothecary's private laboratory - though for entirely different reasons. It has the biggest air filters, the best maintained airlocks on the doors and is the furthest away from everyone else.
Which doesn't bother him. At least not much. He has his peace. Whether he wants it or not.
With a sigh, he leans to the side and pats the coiled tentacles on Paz'uz's head. The demon looks up and grunts amiably as he snaps at Khorag's hand.
The marine shakes his head, straightens up again with a groan. "No, it's not time to play. I've got work to do. This virus looks promising, if I can just - ."
The large airlock at the entrance opens. Khorag tilts his head. "What a rare guest!" And even rarer in full armour and helmet. But the athmosphere, stimulating for Khorag, is unpleasant at best, even deadly in normal circumstances, for the rest of the Consortium.
Khorag puts his fist to his chest: "Chief Apothecary. What can I do for you?"
Fabius walks towards Khorag's workbench, glances at the readouts on the screens hanging in rusty frames above it, nods. His expression unreadable under the baroque, ancient helmet in well-worn amethyst. He hands the Plague Marine a dataslate. "I don't talk about my colleagues and their areas of expertise."
Khorag reaches for the pad, his touch leaves grey-brown traces. He wants to ask something, but Fabius is already on his way out. Turns around once more at the entrance. "You've made good progress. We'll talk about the new mutation Agape-Xi-3 tonight." "Gladly, Chief Apothecary."
Khorag sinks heavily onto one of the reinforced stools, reads the brief message. Sighs again. Looks at Paz'uz, who puts his head on his knee. Caustic slime drips to the floor. "We've become a cabinet of horrors, haven't we, my friend?" Paz'uz stares at him.
Khorag taps the record button on the pad. "Sent by Khorag Sinj, Apothecary of the Death Guard on behalf of Fabius, Chief Apothecary of the Emperor's Children.
I am the last Apothecary of the Death Guard, as the gift of Nurgle protects us from anything that harms us. Every change in the body is done according to his will and only makes us more effective. Therefore, my services to my brothers are no longer needed. The rate of fusion with the Armour is almost 100% for the Fourteenth - much, much higher than other Legions - with the possible exception of the Thousand Sons for obvious reasons. The armour has become an exoskeleton for us and we feel with it in a certain way as with bare skin. From that point of view, removal is neither necessary nor advisable. Should I ever feel the need to subject myself or one of my brethren to surgery, I will treat the armour the same way I do the horn plates that some Possessed of the Word Bearers have." He pauses for a moment, looks around his lab. Takes in the browns and greens. The stalagtites of rust on the railings. "Others speak of contamination. For us, it's passing on the gift. We spread what nature gives of its own accord. It is a philosophical question how far we go with it. Where we draw boundaries. I understand that my colleagues from the Third and from other legions who worship other gods - or in the case of the Chief Apothecary are their own little gods - draw boundaries. I have no problem separating religion and medical practice. I keep a low profile."
A few moments of silence again, broken by the buzzing of rotflies in one of the corners.
"And Nurglings? No, unfortunately not at the moment. I know Saqqara has some, though he downplays that fact somewhat, believing for some reason that it would offend me. But at the moment, no shard of Grandfather has pierced the veil. Except, of course, Paz'uz.

SARS-CoV-2: An Invasion Of The Body Snatchers On A Cellular Level
I will try using analogy to explain:
DNA is a recipe. However, it's written in a language the cook cannot read. The cook reads RNA. The cook follows all instructions without question.
Every cell in your body has DNA, a translator and a cook.
A virus only has RNA, and no cook.
A virus' only chance of survival is to invade a host with a cook. The more prodigious the cook, the better.
SARS-CoV2 prefers to invade goblet cells (mucous producing) in your nose, throat and lungs (eyes can be infected too). Obviously, the nose is the first encountered.
Once the virus injects its RNA into your goblet cells, the cook begins rapidly producing more virus which is continually shed into your mucous. It is swept along by cilia into your throat and lungs, where it infects more and more goblet cells (another example of exponential growth). But it is also being expelled out into the environment. If you are coughing, sneezing, panting, shouting or singing, you are expelling large amounts of virus at greater distances. As well as driving it deeper into your lungs. This mechanism is the reason testing looks to the amount of identifiable virus in your "snot" or "spit." It also explains why the deep nasal swab PCR test gives less false negatives in asymptomatic or presymptomatic people. It is where the virus first sets up shop, so the viral load captured is higher.
Did you know 100 million SARS-COV2 can fit on the head of a pin? That's enough to infect 1,000 people. This is a very tiny virus. Just imagine how many are being exhaled over a dinner table somewhere tonight.
Because this virus is novel (never before identified as an invader), your immune system doesn't recognize it immediately and mount a defense.
Additionally, the virus is stealing the energy and ingredients required to make what you need to stay healthy.
Eventually, you begin to notice the "symptoms" of the invasion and immune responses begin.
But for the 3 days prior to you noticing, you are a virus factory propagating an alien invasion of humanity.
Correctly washing your hands and keeping your hands away from your face lowers the transmission rate via touch. (True for colds and flu as well.) Keeping your distance lessens the chance of virus entering into the body. Wearing a mask lowers the viral load being expelled and lowers the viral load being inhaled from the environment. A smaller number of people in any enclosed space lowers the viral load in the environment.
All current data point to viral load (how much virus invades you) being a primary factor in severe disease and death. That's the reason for the mitigation tactics recommended.
Remdesivir slows down the cook pumping out fresh virus.
In order to destroy the virus, we would have to destroy your cells hosting the virus.
A successful immune response clears the virus without damaging too many of your own cells.
Monoclonal antibodies (Regeneron) are copies of someone else's successfull immune response.
A small percentage of those invaded will die. A larger percentage will require ICU stays. An even larger percentage will require hospitalization. The vast majority will suffer illness at home.
If only 0.5 % of the US population dies due to COVID-19, that equates to approximately 1,655,000 dead.
We are currently (11/17/20) at about 250,000 dead.
The updated modeling now predicts a 75% rate of persons with some sort of effective immunity to achieve herd immunity. That equates to about 248 million of us having been infected or successfully vaccinated.
Currently we believe there is no more than 50 million of us with any sort of immunity.
That leaves just under 200 million more of us left to go.
The virus is at war for its very survival. And, like everything else, it will either adapt or die. The influenza virus has managed to adapt. So our vaccines have to adapt yearly. The small pox virus did not adapt. It no longer exists outside the laboratory.
Every encounter with a host gives this virus a chance to adapt again (the virus adapted between China and Italy to be more infectious).
Allowing unmitigated spread is an unfathomable roll of the evolutionary dice.
And we humans have shown ourselves unable to adapt to the most basic mitigation strategies or vaccination protocols.
