Elizabeth passed the chief of the night in her sister's room, and in the morning had the pleasure of being able to send a tolerable answer to the inquiries which she very early received from Mr. Bingley by a housemaid, and some time afterwards from the two elegant ladies who waited on his sisters.
okay, but i find this to be such a neat contrast- bc for one we have the different times of when this reaches elisabeth, but i also think that this sounds like mr bingley sent a maid as soon as he woke up/ saw the first maid, as it’s just a non-descript housemaid. and in comparison, the sisters sent “two of the elegant ladies who waited in [them]”
which implies to me that they first got ready and prepared themselves for the day and had their nice morning, before sending off their ladies’ maids to check on jane. which isn’t an evil action, but does highlight the level of care they have for jane, especially in comparison to mr bingley.
aka: mr bingley is a bit of a simp and a darling for it

how to flirt with Darcy
compliment his penmanship ❌
when he asks if you want to dance, accuse him of only wanting you to say yes so he can despise your taste and refuse to give him the pleasure ✅

“Yes; these four evenings have enabled them to ascertain that they both like Vingt-un better than Commerce”
- Pride and Prejudice
“Still, I confess that I miss my rubber. It is the first Saturday night for seven-and-twenty years that I have not had my rubber”
-Sherlock Holmes: The Red-Headed League
If my literary substacks have taught me one thing it’s that I don’t know shit about old card games from England.

I forgot how immediate the favouritism is in this book.
Also, interesting to be starting this reread right as the Look Back Diaries is wrapping up. Fun timing!

Pride and Prejudice Weekly (or, possibly, Periodic Pride and Prejudice, depending on which name they settle on) starts very soon, if anyone reading this is interested (and has room for another one of these things)

Poking at the Substack
It’s quiet… too quiet.
(But seriously, does anyone know if there was notice of a hiatus I missed? I understand that real life is more important than a silly little book club, but suddenly going dark like this is odd and concerning.)

i’d only watched the 2005 movie of pride and prejudice before this substack started up (though i’ve always meant to read the book since watching it and just never got around to it) but it’s a little surprising to me that the bennets have never actually met mr. collins before. i was under the impression that they were at least somewhat personally familiar with him, though i can’t remember if there’s anything actually in the movie that would’ve given me that impression or if i just made that assumption on my own.
#pride and prejudice weekly#it's also been a while since i've seen the movie though#definitely gonna do a rewatch after i finish the book

"What does Mr. Darcy mean," said [Elizabeth] to Charlotte, "by listening to my conversation with Colonel Forster?"
"That is a question which Mr. Darcy only can answer."
"But if he does it any more I shall certainly let him know that I see what he is about. He has a very satirical eye, and if I do not begin by being impertinent myself, I shall soon grow afraid of him."
On his approaching them soon afterwards, though without seeming to have any intention of speaking, Miss Lucas defied her friend to mention such a subject to him; which immediately provoking Elizabeth to do it...
I love the dynamic between Elizabeth and Charlotte. Their friendship is so realistic and fun.

Ok, I might jump late into Pride and Prejudice Weekly. I've never read it, never seen the movies, but did do The Lizzie Bennet Diaries so we'll see.

mr bennet telling mr collins to go out with his daughters after being annoyed by mr collins intruding upon his study, not realising that this is actually karma for him inviting mr collins to intrude upon his home and All The Rest Of His Family Too
but of course mr bennet must preserve his safe haven of a library :)

going straight from Elizabeth and Charlotte's conversation on how obviously a lady ought to show interest in a guy for things to work out to informing us that Darcy has become interested in Elizabeth, and she has not the slightest idea, because he has decided the best response to realizing he likes her and wants to know her better is to constantly stand at the edge of her conversations and never say anything to her himself... peak comedy

"You must decide for yourself," said Elizabeth; "and if, upon mature deliberation, you find that the misery of disobliging his two sisters is more than equivalent to the happiness of being his wife, I advise you by all means to refuse him." "How can you talk so?" said Jane, faintly smiling. "You must know that though I should be exceedingly grieved at their disapprobation, I could not hesitate."

The difference in the levels of language depending on the characters:
Mrs. Bennet:
"Don't keep coughing so, Kitty, for Heaven's sake! Have a little compassion on my nerves. You tear them to pieces."
followed by
"Aye, so it is," cried her mother, "and Mrs. Long does not come back till the day before; so it will be impossible for her to introduce him, for she will not know him herself."
and
Mrs. Bennet said only, "Nonsense, nonsense!"
and later
"I am sick of Mr. Bingley," cried his wife.
Compare with Mr. Bennet:
"I honour your circumspection. A fortnight's acquaintance is certainly very little. One cannot know what a man really is by the end of a fortnight.
and
"What can be the meaning of that emphatic exclamation?" cried he. "Do you consider the forms of introduction, and the stress that is laid on them, as nonsense? I cannot quite agree with you there. What say you, Mary? For you are a young lady of deep reflection, I know, and read great books and make extracts."
(I'm hesitating to include '"Kitty has no discretion in her coughs," said her father; "she times them ill."' because the 'ill' could be counted as wordplay but I'm not sure he'd joke about health)
The girls aren't also portrayed as very smart:
"I do not cough for my own amusement," replied Kitty fretfully.
and
The girls stared at their father.
and
Mary wished to say something sensible, but knew not how.
and
The astonishment of the ladies was just what he wished
Overall, Mrs. Bennet seems very pragmatic and not very learned (perhaps from a slightly lower social class? The Regency era isn't the one I'm best versed in, so someone would need to confirm if "Aye" was used by both nobles and commonfolk at the time. The girls seem to emulate her, but Mr. Bennet believes them smarter than they seem on the page. He himself is shown to be quite well learned!
