Price optimization is finding and fixing prices to make your products or services more attractive to customers. Often, it’s used by retailers to get better placement on search engines, drive more website traffic and increase sales.

One of the comments to this article pointed to a TikTok video where someone was asked to tip at an airport self-service counter. Presumably there was no employee interaction anywhere in the purchase process, so who gets the tip? At counter-service restaurants, the implicit assumption is that the employees will get them eventually, but how do we know for sure? I'm increasingly of the suspicion that this is just another manifestation of price optimization, where a company charges different prices to different customers based on how much they're willing to pay (which is practiced outside of retail too), but in front of you with a POS terminal instead of behind the scenes with algorithms.
This, coupled with the trend to move merchandise behind barriers, makes me think that retail isn't just heading back to the days of general stores, but all the way back to bazaars, where you have to haggle to get the best price.

OKAY, SILLY COMIC!!! Sorry to anyone that expected a proper intense comic at the mention of lore revelations but "absurd" had been the keyword. I was going to continue the wall of text but I realized if I went any further I mightve had to add content warnings on my post so I just left it as is. Anyway, I thought it would be funny if Finn's cooking skills and habits were more than just a hobby for him, and at some point he got tossed around doing some missions in all sorts of different kitchen environments over Europe, so not only does it reinforce his more fanciful cooking, but he's also been a witness to his own personal Hell's Kitchen moments, which also reinforced his morals and ethics because hhoooooooo boy.
Anyway, tap/swipe on the pictures and enjoy😊
#I did this quickly forgive me for how silly we look I knowww I've drawn us better.#But this was mostly just for kicks and laughs and I had just done the fully colored sweater thingy I'm sure yall get the picture.#*Waves title card over your screen* anyway. Axlerod is next so I hope yall are enjoying the content.#I am excited to finally get art of him on my blog that will be fully colored and whatnot. Nontheless. cough. sputters. both of us.#I really need to draw me and my F/Os together more. 99% of the time it is just me drawing souly them.#Im right at my edge of turning this into a gush post I gotta hush.#Anyway. I really really enjoy the Cooking Mama games. There's one on the Switch I wanna get I dont care if it wasnt optimized for-#-the US region and might have some errors. hand it over. And it isn't the maximum price of being 50-60 dollars for a game! oorah.#I AM SORRY MY A'S LOOK LIKE U'S IN THE COMIC. I got a little sloppy and didn't care as much about legibility as I normally do.#I know the 3DS isn't proportionately accurate. This is the second time I have drawn one spare me.#self ship#selfship#selfshipping#self shipping#finn🩶💙#kaneart

Alright so ive been thinking about it (probably far too much) and want a second opinion.
Tears of the Kingdom and Baldurs Gate 3 were the same price.
TotK gave me a total of like. I think it was 160 hours to 100% completion (koroks ignored) in my case. And then i set it down and have had no urge to touch it again.
I'm about 120 hours into BG3 now. I have not completed my first playthrough, and I expect Ive still got some 30 hours left of it. I DO intend to play through it again, and I know that there are countless things left for me to do in it still.
And like. I ENJOYED TotK. It was a blast. But looking at BG3 now, complete with its 3 stage city map, like five other maps too, full voice acting, complex storyline, multiple endings, replayability, etc.
It has me realizing that TotK reused its old map. The only major addition was a procedurally generated single-biome underworld and a couple of floating islands (several of which were copy pasted around the map). Most of its gameplay was already built on the previous game.
So the thought I keep coming back to then is that TotK was fine. It was fun. But if BG3 is a 70 dollar game, then TotK has no good reason to be any more than $40.
But I think youre more into both games than I have been, so I wanna know your thoughts.
Sat on this for a little bit and...yeah. $40 is a good price for it.
Like, I'm not too mad about the map thing. BG3 was in production since BotW came out, while TotK started in 2019 and has to deal with a physics environment. I know what I'm getting into with a Nintendo game when I buy one, I know the level of writing and effort (and railroading) to expect. But the price thing has been a thorn in my side that I've ignored for...awhile.
I do think BG3 deserved another year to cook. Maybe two. I'm extremely GLAD it came out when it did, because I found it when I did, but the third act, for all its complexity, has a lot of loose ends that need tying together. Which, I also am not mad about. When you've had Pokemon-level writing for most of your life, and you connect dots in Zelda, literally any snippet of BG3 writing feels incredible. Even the worst bits of Baldur's Gate are so rich in comparison to the Nintendo games I play. But I DO think that they rushed themselves, and they definitely did it so as to not compete with Starfield.
Which is like...I've spent a decade evaluating whole wheat bread, and you've put a massive chocolate cake in front of me. I'm not going to care that the icing on the third tier isn't as fancy as the first two. I am kind of going to lament that the baker had to rush it out the door, though.
Also BG3 replayability >>>>>>>>> TotK replayability. Like, it's past Skyrim levels. I love games where my choices matter and aren't retconned.
#long post#bg3#totk#ask bee#fave mutuals#like i love totk for what it is#and i love bg3 for what IT is#but you're 100% right in that prices have gotten ridiculous#ALSO. WOULD SOMEONE OPTIMIZE THESE PC GAMES PLEAS#negative salt#<- just in case

To anyone in the TUC fandom who has looked at AHS and skipped it because they heard the ending is happy...
... and then assumed that it's just a wish fulfillment "ideal reality" kind of outcome of the TUC story that cuts all of the depth, pain, and realism ... Go back and read it right now.
Because that is not what AHS is. Not even close.
AHS is not "my version" of TUC where I just change whatever I dislike without regard for themes or characters in the original. Far from it. One of the main goals I had was actually to give more of the Underland. More characterization (that aligns with canon, although some characters develop in a different direction because of shifts in circumstances), more worldbuilding (that coincides with canon, adding onto it), ... just more, period.
The best way I can describe what it actually is is honestly saying that AHS is to TUC like Marvel's "What if ...?" is to the MCU. It is quite literally a "What if Henry had survived his fall at the end of "Gregor the Overlander"?" And I kid you not, 95% of the changes in the story, compared to TUC, are simply a result of exactly this change.
But the entire plot of the final book is different, right? Well, I didn't say that the consequences of that one change weren't substantial. They are. Without spoiling too much I can only say that Henry happens to be an optimist, and it also happens that an optimist was exactly what the TUC story needed to achieve a happier outcome.
Anyone who has actually read my version of the CoC plot will tell you that it is far from ideal, perfect, or pain-free. A lot more happens in the actual plot, but most of those new events are there to serve the dark, violent nature of war. There's so much talk about loss, and sacrifice, exploration of (also the dark side of) heroism, and whether "for the greater good" is worth it. There's corruption and death, injustice, and grappling with unkind fates and alienation/rejection.
Now, I will admit that I did put less emphasis on the societal pressure aspect of CoC, but mainly because that theme is a huge part of AHS 2 already, and it did not really fit this part of the story anymore. Instead, "Gregor against society" becomes "Questers against society" (quite literally, since they are — small spoiler — banding together to actually overthrow Solovet and bring about change.)
BUT ... if there is corruption, death, and the violence of war, how is it happier then? How can it have a happy ending?
Very simply because it is not only corruption but also redemption. Not only death and suffering but also growth and gain. Not only violence and breaking of relationships but also companionship, hope, and mending of relationships.
... The main change that happens to be so powerful it can give this series a happy ending without disrespecting or abandoning its original gritty violent core is ... a shift in mindset toward the positive. For Gregor, but also for everyone else. One of the main themes I added is the exploration of the double-edged nature of things: Everything has good and bad consequences. What we take away from it is what we choose to focus on.
Now you might see better what I meant by "All this series needed was an optimist" earlier. If there were someone to remind people of the bright side, to remind Gregor that his rager power does not make him evil and that he is never alone or choiceless, to embody this hopeful outlook and bring it out in everything ... I promise to you that this is all it would have taken.
And this is what I'm giving you.
#gregor the overlander#the underland chronicles#suzanne collins#tuc#underland chronicles#a henry story#ahs#ahs is actually so far from happy go lucky or lighthearted#like so incredibly far#it has made so many people cry#hope and optimism do NOT mean lighthearted and fun#yes it gives belonging and family#but at what cost#hope means clinging to hope in your darkest hours#when everything seems lost and everyone is against you#when everything wants you to give up#choosing heroism when you have every right to just become a villain is also a huge thing#what it means to have power over your own fate and make your own choices too#tight knit found family against society#fighting and sacrificing your own happiness and yourself to bring about needed changes#to create a better future#you guys literally do not understand how much#gregor and the code of claw#one of my main gripes with coc is its lack of nuance in how it looks at pain and loss#everything has a price#but everything also has a gain#it just depends on learning to look at it the right way

baldy gate looks fun but i don't have a pc that can run it or a ps5 so in order to play it i will have to spend approximately $1500. well there's other pastimes.
#the entry gate to pc gaming these days is so cost prohibitive i think the industry is going to eat itself at some point soon.#heard somebody recently say that pc games used to be so prevalent bc they were what you played with your home computer if you couldn't#afford a console. now all that is flushed in favor of ENHANCED RAY TRACING PORE DEFINING TEKNOLOGY in every big new game and it just is not#sustainable because they run like garbage unless you have spent minimum $1000 on components in the last ~2 years. and that's if you can have#the knowledge and skill to upgrade your own pc. which most people do not.#major dev studios have completely turned their backs on the concept of optimizing their games to be playable on many different systems#in favor of catering solely to the dwindling pool of gamers willing to shell out CONSTANTLY to keep up with the rapidly developing tech.#and that is on top of steadily rising base game prices + the utter hogwash of releasing a half-finished game for full price and then farming#the rest of it out piece-by-piece over the next two years for another $30 per chunk.#it's absurd.#ok this has been The Gamer Report with your host: me

Genuinely with the death of nintendo handheld low-cost games that came with the switch, as every continuing handheld series became a switch series and thus had a price increase, a lot of their most kid-friendly franchises have become more and more inaccessible to children, especially now that nintendo has decided to follow every other major console and has started pricing new games even higher.
And now that a lot of these series are so old and thus a lot of their fanbase has aged into adulthood, a lot of these series would benefit greatly from making some of the new entries more adult-oriented. But nintendo very stubbornly wants to keep their main franchises as kid-friendly as possible, sometimes severely restricting the potential of these series by not allowing them to explore things like more complex mechanics, higher difficulty, or darker topics that past entries have brushed over in favor of keeping the age rating low. Pokemon's core battle engine has been in want of an overhaul for years now, and Legends Arceus kind of did that but not wholly, for example.
This would be pretty understandable in the interest of keeping every entry of these series accessible to all age groups, but with inflating prices, who are these games even for anymore? A normal kid with your average allowance from their parents isn't going to be able to afford tears of the kingdom or even $60 pokemon games more often than not. Back when these games were $30-$40, sure, if they saved up, but now many families have even tighter budgets than ever due to the rising cost of living. Nintendo is pricing themselves out of their target audience while simultaneously leaving their adult fans who have been with them since childhood to feel neglected in favor of exclusively making games for today's children.
Obviously nintendo will always make sales because even though they make children's games, they're still fun as hell for a person of any age, and many kids will be able to afford their games once in a while, but it does feel like they're kind of... making their games for an audience that barely exists.
#i do hope the success of legends arceus leads gamefreak to branch out more into other formats beyond what you typically expect from pokemon#that game's massive success does show there is a market for more atypical pokemon games with higher difficulty#but that's not my main point. my point is that the video game industry is kind of hurtling towards unsustainability#it used to be that video games were made on shoestring budgets and coded by some of the most inventive people of the time#utilizing poor hardware so they were forced to optimize optimize optimize#and you could buy them for pretty reasonable prices#i mean. as it is with everything. the video game industry transforming into a competition between giants has been bad for product quality#at least indie game devs exist. carrying on the legacy of the first few decades of video game development#making games that are either for kids or for adults rather than trying to be equally appealing to all age groups#which is an impossible balance to strike without leaving one demographic or another unsatisfied#also not to be an old man but why are nintendo games so fucking easy nowadays#pokemon treats you like you don't know the block goes in the square hole#back in my day video games were hard and didn't hold your hand constantly and we LIKED it#are kids more stupid than they were 15 years ago? no. obviously kids aren't getting dumber#so why do games have to treat you like you're an idiot?
