The Bells of Saint John (Doctor Who S07E06)

Today Jon is forced to watch and recap “The Bells of Saint John”, the sixth episode of Doctor Who’s seventh series, as well as its prequel. The Doctor’s still trying to chase down the mysteriously reappearing Clara Oswin Oswald, but this time he’s got a real raster blaster of an octal forty on his hands and he’ll have to jack into the darkframe to warm boot this i14y if he wants to bypass hyperspace. Can he let the smoke out of this waterwitch before he gets a killer poke? Can Clara smash the stack before she gets wedged by a slopsucker? Can the Doctor backtrack this snivitz before all of London eats flaming death?

Eli, I’m glad you had such a good time with “High Anxiety”! I don’t think it’s the best of what the show has to offer, but it’s definitely among the most discussed, at least from what I’ve seen. I agree that it’s really jarring to see Rose suddenly so angry and aggressive, and the revelation that she’s been using the whole time she’s known the Girls is pretty mind-blowing. Plus, I’ll definitely have to look up Gordon the Chicken and get his input the next time we have our Act One Oscar Challenge!

You did a great job, Chief, but now it’s time to head for London! Buttocks tight!

The Doctor is sitting on a swing set when a young girl walks up and says hello. She’s curious about why an old man is swinging like that, and reflects on how her mom tells her she’s not supposed to talk to strange men. She really wants to talk to this strange man, though, and points out that the Doc is lonely. She can tell he’s lost something, and he says this is true. He’s lost a friend of his not once but twice, and now he’s not sure if he’ll find her again. He’s been looking for her all over, but he hasn’t had any luck. He’s hoping he’ll just sort of run into her because of destiny or whatever, but the girl thinks that’s pretty dumb. She wishes him luck on his search and then runs off to be with her mom, who identifies her as Clara Oswald.

Starting off, we see a video of a man warns anyone who will listen that if they’re looking for wi-fi and see a network with a name made up of weird signals, they shouldn’t click it. If they do click it, you’ll be chosen by ‘them’ and ‘they’ will get into your computer. Once that happens, you’re going to die and then your soul is going to get uploaded to the internet. Really. We get a dramatic zoom out, revealing that the man’s video is just one of hundreds and that he, too, has been chosen, killed and uploaded.

After the opening credits, we jump to Cumbria in 1207. A monk runs to an abbey and calls for the Abbot, saying the bells of Saint John are ringing. The Abbot heads down to let the Mad Monk, an Oswald-obsessed Doctor, know about the bells. Jumping back to 2013, we see the latest version of Oswald (Jenna Coleman), also called Clara, with the family she works as a nanny for. One of the kids she takes care of heads out with a copy of Summer Falls by one Mrs. Amelia Williams, while the other one plays on her computer. Clara’s having computer problems of her own, and when she checks the internet connection on her laptop she sees the network with the name made up of those weird symbols. She doesn’t click it right away, at least, but instead calls tech support. The phone in the TARDIS is ringing, and this is the sound of Saint John’s bells ringing. The Doc is brought to the TARDIS and answers the phone, finding Clara on the other end.

Clara explains her internet woes, and how she got this number from a woman in a shop who said this was the best help line in the universe. The Doc recognizes her as the person he’s been looking for, but by this point Clara has clicked the weird-looking network and been chosen. Her face shows up in that wall of people who have died and been trapped, but she’s pulled away from the computer by a knock at the door. She finds the Doctor waiting for her, but she doesn’t know who he is. She confirms that she is Clara Oswald (there’s no Oswin this time) but she definitely doesn’t know this guy.

Meanwhile, that big wall of screens, it turns out, is overlooking an office staffed by people working at computers. One of them, Alexei, lets his boss, Miss Kizlet, know about Clara and she orders him to upload Clara. Once away from Alexei, Kizlet lets another one of the people here, a man named Mahler, know that she’s going to have Alexei killed when he gets back from vacay. Mahler says they’re uploading too many people too quickly and are going to be noticed. Kizlet says he’s having a crisis of conscience, and tells him that they’re giving the people they’re uploading a sort of immortality. She hacks into Mahler’s mind and gets him to change his mind about having concerns.

Back at Clara’s boss’ house, she’s still not letting the Doc inside, but suddenly there are sounds of someone moving around upstairs when no one should be up there. A young girl comes downstairs, but Clara realizes she’s the girl from the cover of Summer Falls. With her cover blown the girl’s disguise begins to fall apart. The Doctor takes the time to change his clothes, but by the time he gets back Clara’s body is dead and her mind is being uploaded by the machine that was disguised as that unsettling girl. The Doc gets Clara’s laptop and hacks the mainframe to tech the honeykernel and slice the pie in time to get Clara’s mind back in her body.

Mahler lets Kizlet know the Doc left a message saying Clara was under his protection when he jacked into the cyberzone, and when she realizes the Doctor’s involved she calls the client, the person funding all this nonsense, to let them know the person they warned her about is here. Back in Clara’s boss’ house, Clara’s passed out and the Doc decides to be as creepy as possible and go through her things. He heads outside just as she wakes up. She leans out of her window to let him know she doesn’t remember what happened to her, but she appreciates him looking out for her. She comes out to join him for tea and he explains wi-fi’s all over the place and that’s a perfect place for something to hide and prey on humanity. Over the course of this conversation Clara realizes her mind was altered by her being partially uploaded, as she now knows all about computers when she didn’t before.

Speaking of computer nonsense, another one of those robots is sent in by Kizlet and it uses wi-fi to… I guess possess? everyone on Clara’s boss’ street. That wasn’t enough, though, because it also causes a blackout all over London and redirects a plane to crash into where Clara and the Doc are standing. The Doc takes Clara into the TARDIS and we get the usual new companion surprised reaction, and then the Doc takes the TARDIS onto the crashing plane. The Doctor manages to stop the plane from crashing and then takes Clara for breakfast. She uses her newfound computer skills to black hat the botnet to deepweb the metadata and phish the 0day, and find out where the people who are doing all of this are physically located in the process. She sets up the username ClaraOswalffortheWin and shortens that to Oswin, much to the Doc’s dismay.

The Doc goes to get coffee and Kizlet uses the wi-fi to take over everyone in the café to spook the Doc and let him know how in control she and her people are. Clara’s figured out that Kizlet and her people are in The Shard, but when the Doctor returns and she lets him know she realizes he’s yet another robotic double that downloads her consciousness to the dark net honeypot Kizlet’s got set up in The Shard. The Doctor shows up in Kizlet’s office, only he’s not really there. He hacked his cyber double and uses it to upload Kizlet in the hopes that this will convince her people to free everyone trapped in the cloud. It doesn’t work at first, but luckily the Doc’s white hat techno double is there to hack Mahler’s head and make him free everyone.

Clara wakes up back at the café with the Doc just as UNIT seizes control of Kizlet’s office in The Shard. Turns out Kizlet’s client has been the Great Intelligence this whole time, and the Intelligence says she has to restore everyone to the state they were in before they started working for it. She does, and suddenly no one who worked in The Shard knows what they’re doing there or why.

Back at Clara’s boss’ house, Clara spots the TARDIS outside and goes to speak with the Doc. She tells him she always planned to travel, but her friend died and she took the job as nanny to take care of her kids. The Doc asks her to travel, but she says she’s not running off just like that. She tells him to come back tomorrow and ask her to travel with him again then, and maybe she’ll say yes.

Like last time, I’m a bit conflicted here. I genuinely didn’t expect to see the Great Intelligence again, so that was a pleasant surprise, but once again the plot involving the Intelligence doesn’t make any sense. You can’t just set up a premise like ‘wi-fi lets us control people’ by explaining how the hell that works. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I don’t have the first clue how wi-fi works or what makes my computer go, anymore than I know how gravity works or what makes that angry yellow ball in the sky go away at night, but even I know this isn’t how wi-fi works. The Amy shout-out was fun and I’m still enjoying Jenna Coleman, but the plot of this one was just so silly that I kind of can’t get over it. Why the heck does the Great Intelligence need all these human minds in the first place? Does it need them to get smarter? It’s already literally named the Great Intelligence, how much smarter does it need to be?

UK’s 20 most Instagrammable villages revealed based on hashtags

When it comes to pretty villages, Britain is undoubtedly a class act.

And so this picture-list of its most ‘Instagrammable’ hamlets is sweet eye-candy indeed.

It has been compiled by property website Bankrate, which took to image-sharing site Instagram and assessed the number of hashtags 100 villages dotted around the UK each had.

Then it created a top 20 ranking of the most hashtagged hamlets.

The list includes a stunning harbour village in Devon, an Italian-style settlement in Wales, a Northumberland location with an imposing castle and several picture-perfect destinations in the enchanting Cotswolds. No places in Scotland or Northern Ireland garnered enough hashtags to make the top 20 ranking – but we’ve included pictures of their most Instagrammable villages at the very bottom.

I know everyone probably thinks this but my family are truly the best family there is. Last night proved it. It also reminded me guys how many people Im related to and how much we can enjoy each others company.

Yesterday (14th November) marked 10 months since we lost my wonderful Uncle Dominic so suddenly and unexpectedly. 10 month of tears, smiles, laughs, hugs and readjusting to life without him here. I can’t even begin to put into words how proud I am of my two beautiful cousins and my amazing auntie. It makes me burst with pride and cry when I think of them and how they’ve found strength to continue together and unite as a unit. There are moments when I almost forget what has happened and then in a split second I remember and I cry, I miss him and I never saw him every day so what I’m feeling is only a fraction of what I do.

Saturday night was one of those times.

Earlier this year my family announced they would be setting up a foundation in memory of my uncle and would be using it to donate money to Wythenshaw’s CTCCU where the amazing staff looked after him and my family so well. They also announce they would be holding a charity ball called The King’s Ball and all the money raised would be going to the unit. They had turned something awful into something good so that they could help others who had been through a time like theirs.

Well let me tell you for first timers at organising a charity ball… what a fucking roaring success it was!!

Firstly the room was packed, I mean packed. This was not only a testament to how wonderful my uncle was but how amazing and well respected my Auntie and cousins are too. I remember looking around thinking he’d of bloody loved this event!

Secondly Bruce Turner who hosted the night was a star. If there was ever someone born to do something like that Bruce is that bloke.

It still amazes me how much strength my cousins have to get up and stand in front of people and talk about their dad and what they’ve gone through. He’d be super proud of you both for last night.

And thirdly there were a few things going on to raise money throughout the night:

Heads and tails; donate £10 to play, Bruce flipped a coin and basically the room chose heads or tails and the last person standing won a prize.

£10 raffle; write your name on a tenner chuck it in a bucket and if you get drawn out you win a prize.

pledges; everyone who wanted to could write a pledge to raise £100 over the next 12 months by either doing something or just donating at a later date. I’m pretty sure almost everyone in the room pledged to raise money. Some people had already signed up for half marathons and things in advance of the night but pledged to put the money to the foundation.

Champagne raffle; pretty much what it says on the tin, £10 in and there was a bottle of champagne on each table and if you were drawn you won it

Live auction; people had generously donated things towards this on offer we had

Then there was a live band who played until the end of the night who were also bloody brilliant too!!

It was such a wonderful night for wonderful man. He’d of loved every minute of that!!

My cousins announced the other day they raised a staggering £38,375!!!! In one night!!!!! And it’s all going to the unit!!

Ive been scrolling through the photos and videos of the night and seeing what everyone has put on insta and Facebook and I am just so incredibly proud to have been part of it and Im even more proud of the effort that everyone put in to help make it happen.

Saturday night was simply wonderful. I can’t put into words how immensely proud I am of my family and the strength they have shown. To turn something so sad into something so wonderful. He would of been very proud (and a bit gutted he missed such a good shindig).

The United Kingdom is a country with a long and varied history, so it’s no surprise that it has a significant number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Most travelers heading to the UK usually visit only a few token destinations outside of London, so they miss out on these wonderful historic places. Here’s a guide to some you should consider visiting the next time you’re in the UK.

The City of Bath

The city of Bath, founded by the Romans as a thermal spa, is also known as one of the homes of world-renowned writer Jane Austen. The city has gone through many transformations since its origins, from being a wool industry hotspot in the Middle Ages to developing into an architecturally opulent 18th- century Georgian town. It was added to the UNESCO list in 1987 for a number of reasons; its Roman Baths and hot springs, which are still pretty much intact, 18th-century architecture and town planning, its setting at the foot of hilly countryside, with green views stretching in every direction from the city center, and for how its architecture reflected the social ambitions of the 18th century. Nowadays, Bath’s historic center is a delight to wander around any time of year, and it is a romantic destination because of its stunning architecture, narrow streets, and cozy atmosphere. Bath also has a vibrant arts and culture scene, particularly theater and literature, and is host to several festivals throughout the year, such as the Jane Austen Festival and the Bath Children’s Literature Festival.

St Kilda

St Kilda is one of the most isolated and magnificent of all the UNESCO sites in the UK. A tiny archipelago in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, St Kilda is the only UK UNESCO site – and only one of a few in the world – that has a mixed status of cultural and natural importance.

The islands of St Kilda have a fascinating history. Inhabited for over two millennia, the local population, which has never exceeded 180 people, lived a hermetic existence, cut off from the rest of the world. In the 19th-century, when tourism to the island took off, the residents faced new problems, like tetanus, a disease that the locals hadn’t been exposed to before. Diseases, and the British military presence during World War I, eventually led to the complete evacuation of the St Kilda’s largest island, Hirta in the 1930s. Today it’s possible to explore the remnants of the prehistoric ruins and a medieval village on Hirta as well as enjoy the rugged landscape and endemic wildlife. Visit at the right time – either out of season or very early in the morning – and, aside from a few scientists, National Trust workers, and defense personnel, you could have the islands to yourself. Most tourists only visit Hirta, but it is also possible to see the smaller islands of Dun, Soay, and Boreray.

The English Lake District

The English Lake District has long inspired British writers. William Wordsworth described it as ‘the loveliest spot that man hath found,’ and Beatrix Potter bought a significant amount of land and property during her lifetime and then left it all to the National Trust upon her death. In fact, Potter is attributed with being one of the main reasons why there is still a lake district to enjoy today, as well as helping save the Herdwick sheep from extinction. It’s worth checking out the National Trust attractions detailing Potter’s life in the Lake District, such as Hill Top Farm and The World of Beatrix Potter, but it’s the landscape that also draws tourists here. Ancient castles, rolling hills, tranquil lakes, and picturesque villages that would take months to explore the area fully. The Lake District is known for its walking trails and mountains ideal for hiking, including the highest peak in England, Scafell Pike. It’s also a great area for a wide variety of water sports, such as kayaking, sailing, scuba diving, and windsurfing. A little-known fact about the Lake District is its gastronomy scene; tempting restaurants range from traditional historic pubs to high-end fine dining establishments, and there are special local delicacies you should try, such as Kendal mint cake and Cumberland sausage.

Durham Castle and Cathedral

There are plenty of reasons to visit the city of Durham in the north-east of England. An old university city with a reputation on a par with those of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham is a place that embraces its historical past while still moving with the times. It’s a lively center for theater, music, and comedy. Sites on the UNESCO list include Durham Castle and Cathedral, important landmarks to the city. The castle has been around since Norman times, built on the instruction of William the Conqueror to subdue the northern population – whom he saw as ‘wild and fickle’ – into realizing the might of his power. A classic example of a motte and bailey castle, it was extended over the centuries, including the addition of the magnificent Great Hall in the 14th century. Since 1840, the university has fully occupied the castle. Opposite is the cathedral, a site of religious importance for pilgrims during the Medieval Ages. Built to house the relics of St Cuthbert, the cathedral is also home to the head of St Oswald and the remains of an important Benedictine monk, the Venerable Bede.

Blaenavon Industrial Landscape

South Wales has always had a strong tradition of industry; Wales was the first industrial nation in the world. There’s no better place to celebrate this than the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape. Inscribed as a UNESCO site in 2000, Blaenavon covers 33 kilometers and consists of many interesting sights and attractions related to the 19th-century coal and iron industries. Attractions include the Big Pit National Coal Museum, Blaenavon Ironworks, the Blaenavon Heritage Railway, and the Blaenavon World Heritage Center. Because of the government’s promise to protect the Blaenavon Ironworks in the 1970s, the remains of its 18th and 19th- century furnaces are the best preserved in the UK and now attract record numbers of visitors every year. The Big Pit – a former coal mine – has remained exactly as it was when it ceased functioning as a working coal mine in 1980 and offers guided tours for free— highly unusual for an attraction of this kind in the UK. If that isn’t enough, the town of Blaenavon is a fantastic example of a typical Welsh working-class town; largely architecturally and cultural unchanged since it was established for the workers of the ironworks. The surrounding countryside offers a host of activities, such as walking, horse riding, and cycling.

What this project is about

Good designers and illustrators bring a lot more than their technical skills to the table when they undertake a piece of design. In the way that actors apply something of themselves to the part they play, so it should be with illustration and graphic design. To paraphrase Neville Brody; you need to have a genuineemotional involvement with the project brief to produce effective design solutions. There is a real skill in generating positive emotions in response to projects that may, at first, appear dull - it’s usually to do with embracing the challenge and creating ‘the brief within the brief’. To make your life easier

(and to hopefully elicit as wide a range of human emotions as possible) we’ve decided to use music as the subject matter for this project. As Plato once said: “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything”.

The Project Brief

Choose one from the three songs/pieces of music that you selected from theenvelope of destiny (web links on Blackboard). Make sure it’s the one you find the most interesting, moving or engaging. You are now asked to creatively respond to your chosen piece in one of two ways:

1) Produce creative packaging for a song with lyrics one of the following formats: CD, LP/12”, 7” single or Cassette. The packaging should be a complimentary, engaging, graphic ‘accompaniment’ to a song (N.B. you arenot allowed to package an instrumental track). It should also include elements of typography (the full lyric should be featured). You should pay particular attention to exploring the creative potential of alternative materials, surfaces and types of paper/card.

Although there are no restrictions placed on the use of image, type, hand lettering etc. we would encourage most graphic designers to work to their strengths and produce a type/photographic/design lead solution. In fact it is perfectly permissible to treat this brief as a piece of pure typography. Illustrators need to consider whether the words/text will be to the fore, or if images will communicate the bulk of the meaning.

2) Produce a 30 second (minimum) moving image piece (mp4/mov format) to accompany a song or instrumental piece of music. You could consider this a ‘sample’ from a promotional video or a more experimental work. Any technique/approach to moving image is permissible as long as it

is appropriate and complements the mood of your song/instrumental. Obviously, this piece should include the song/music as its soundtrack.

As this is an ‘open’ brief, particular emphasis will be placed upon your research and development work. Final pieces that appear ‘out of nowhere’ will be heavily penalised. The quality of a final piece is determined by a process of informed selection. You need to show us how your work was refined and developed over the two weeks.

What we are looking for (assessment criteria) EXPERIMENT: Examine and experiment with a range of visual approaches.Explore scale and tactile experience ALTERNATIVES: Select appropriate media/materials in the development of alternatives. Make sure you have more than one final idea/approachEXAMINE: Examine and consider the effectiveness of a range of approaches for the development of ideas, concepts and meaning. We want to see the designers and artists that have influenced you. Include them in your research worksheets.

Deliverables 1. A professionally (and creatively) packaged songor a 30 second (minimum) moving image piece to accompany a song/instrumental track

2. Research and development work clearly documenting the journey to final piece 3. Your completed (apart from the final section) self reflection form.

Points to consider

Like an actor playing a part, your treatment of the lines should be believable and true to the original artist’s intentions. At worst your design should complement the experience of listening to the song, at best it should positively add new dimensions to the experience!

If you were an actor reading these your song’s lyric as lines on stage you would be expected to have: 1. Explored and understood the lyric’s meaning (are the words used literally or metaphorically?)

2. Found a point of view or tone of voice that represents the lyric effectively 3. Brought something of your own experience and personality to the performance - what special ‘something extra’ does a good actor bring to the part they are playing?

You should exploit the unique possibilities of format in enhancing such things as the drama, pace, humour, mood and meaning of the written/sung words.

Your final piece has the potential to be both interactive and/or tactile. Think about materials and surfaces and how they can hugely enhance the viewer’s sensual experience.

Consider changing the format of ‘spreads’ by including ‘gatefolds’ and ‘fold outs’; binding in different types/ colours of paper/materials; cutting the page (holes, slicing the edge etc.); utilising accordion folding etc.; pop-ups; ‘tipping in’ (sticking things on to the page); employing a slipcase.

Moving image people - when using YouTube to listen to the music don’t watch the video as it will colour your view of the piece!
