Iris curled her fingers into fists, to stop them trembling.

She knew what she was doing was wrong. She knew it was hurting Mabel more than anything else she might say or do. But it was the only way to protect her!

"I s - I said, you're my servant, so you have to obey when I give you an order! Don't insult Lord Daniel again! Don't - don't yell at him, don't even speak to him!"

Tears sprung into her eyes, but she steeled herself. She'd already started, and couldn't back down now.

"My Lady...you're - you're upset with me?" Mabel asked quietly.

It was only a few hours after Mabel had returned, beaten bloody and blue, barely conscious.

No! Iris wanted to scream. No, of course not! I could never!

But, if this is what Lord Daniel would do to pay back an insult...

How much further would he go against Mabel - who held no title, whose father was barely a nobleman - if she enraged him further?

Instead, she drew herself up and glared at this girl, the only person who had ever been her true friend, and the only person she knew she must protect from Lord Daniel, her father, and anyone else who would try to hurt her...

And she said:

"I've told you so many times not to lose your temper at nobles, but you haven't stopped! The next time you say a single word to him, I'll dismiss you from the manor and send you away!"

Even Iris's eyes grew wide when she realised what she'd said.

The words had tumbled out of her mouth before she could stop them. And she made a half-gesture, as if to grab them, catch them and take them back.

But they had been said.

And Mabel's face had fallen in shock.

Tears fell from her wide eyes.

Both of them, it seemed, were crying.

"I..." Mable choked, "I know you don't mean it..."

"I do mean it!" Iris sobbed, though she was sure her tone was less than convincing, "So please, please just stop..."

"I know you don't..." was all Mabel would say as her head dropped, "I know you don't..."

Iris couldn't bear it any more.

She turned and fled from the room, away from her crying friend, and away from the hot shame that burned in her face and twisted inside her stomach.

I was going to tell you, I just didn’t know how, and I didn’t want it to be true.

I didn’t want to scare you, especially if I didn’t have anything to substantiate my claims.

But when you figured it out, I couldn’t deny anything.

Damien: … 

Can you please tell me about him? 

Captain Luna: No. 

I’m not going to give you information for you to hurt yourself with. 

You should not change integral parts of yourself to make me, or anyone more comfortable. As your guardian, it is my responsibility to make sure that you are happy and looked-after. 

[Damien looks so mad and pulls out the red Tag. “By the rules of this game I will make you tell me”]. 

Captain Luna: Save it, Damien. 

Damien: >:( 

Why are you so insistent that I stay in the dark about who I’m supposed to be?!

If I know, I can help! I can help it hurt less! 

Captain Luna: You’re not supposed to have the identity of a dead man hanging over you, not at your age. Not at any age. 

The last thing I want is for you to limit yourself because you think it’s going to make me happy. That’s not your look-out. 

Damien: … 

Captain Luna: Whatever you are, whoever you are, it is my responsibility to deal with it.
