Amid coronavirus concerns, I'm worried about my students from last semester and last year. Last semester I worked with students in a title one school with little to no technology access who had a variety of special needs. Last year I worked with students who had access to technology but still had a variety of special needs and needed a lot of different, time-intensive services. I worry about how they're coping with some of the things we might have never even considered. I worry about those in poverty or those with uninvolved parents. In general, I'm just worried and I want them to be okay.

A Warm Welcome
Hello, everyone. This post is going to be about welcoming you (my dear readers) and mentioning some information about the content. My aim for opening this blog is actually improving myself by sharing ideas about education and learning. Also, by means of this blog, I can receive some feedback, pieces of advice, and comments from other people. We are living in the age of technology.  As a pre-service teacher, I must improve my technological skills, I must gain a broader perspective, and I must mingle with technological changes. I hope that with the help of my blog, I can achieve my targets and you can learn useful things from my perspective. Bye for now.

This week I am sharing two online resources that I have found helpful when designing lessons in English.
The first is a website called ‘scootle’ which aligns with the Australian curriculum. If you click on the Link below select ‘browse Australian curriculum’ then ‘English’. This gives you every year level and its content descriptor. Each descriptor then has resources attached that can be used as part of your lessons. I have attached a youtube clip that shows scootles benefits as well as the direct link to scootle.

https://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/p/home
The second resource I have discovered is ‘ Bug Club’ (See picture above) This is an online resource for both teachers and students. For teachers it offers professional development webinars to improve our skills as well as instruction on how to implement Bug Club in your school to promote reading. Have a look, it might be something you would be interested in using in your classroom.

The Scrambled Thoughts of a Tired Brain
It's currently 2am, I have to go to prac in the morning to teach high school kids. It really makes you think what teachers go through behind closed doors. They are always painted to have their shit together and if that's the case then I definitely do not belong. Surely they don't sit up at stupid hours listening to Twenty One Pilots trying to get some sort of grip on reality so they can finally sleep. But logically there have to be depressed and anxious teachers right? Are they just better at hiding it and dealing with it? Or against all odds are there none? These questions remain to be answered.

Week 8
chapter 14
What ways are learners rewarded in your classroom?
I always went for extra credit on assessments so I would use this tool. I like the idea of using a quiz retake as a reward or remove a late grade penalty because this will motivate students who may be worried about their mark and need assistance. Even a ‘leave me alone pass’ for students who do not like to speak in class could be beneficial.
During class I could reward students with listening to music for group work or reward students with letting them choose the seating chart.
How do you provide feedback? What is the difference between feedback and ‘feed forward’?
Depending on how feedback is presented, the student can go into defensive mode and create an unnecessary situation. Feedforward presents an opportunity for growth. Before going into the classroom, I should try the feedforward approach in my current work environment.
To do list: read ‘the Feedback Fix’ by Hoe Hirsch

Identify principles that might guide you in the following contexts:
planning a lesson: know students and how they learn, know the content and how to teach it, plan for & implement effective teaching & learning. Incorporate digital tools (ICT). Use a game like Kahoot. Recall prior knowledge and make sure new content is presented.
designing assessment tasks: assess, provide feedback and report on student learning. Reflection journals/blogs, student presentations and quizzes.
handling a student who exhibits learned helplessness: is the success or failure thought to be based on controllable elements or not. In high school I definitely thought that teachers didn't like me and that was why I was given a bad grade. Even now I still make excuses. I need to provide my students with feedback to show that the amount of effort puts in reflects the grade. I will also provide students, especially the student who is showing learned helplessness, with praise and encouragement. Students need to believe they can accomplish the work before they have even begun the task.
dealing with a student who has downloaded inappropriate material from the web in your class: engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community depending on the material.

How would you explain to a parent how you graded a piece of work as a C, when the parent believes it should have been an A because his daughter gets As in other subject areas?
If the quality of the assignment matches the grade deserved and the parent is upset this may be because the parent did the work and not the student. Perhaps I would show the parent an example of students work who received an A to compare. I might have advised the student already that he/she needed to input more effort into the assignment and the student refused thus resulting in the C. I might be able to let the student resubmit the assignment but this would be dependent on other factors. Such as the student coming to me to question their grade and not just the parent. I was express that a ‘C’ is not a fail and was giving because of the amount of performance not the effort.

Blog 1 - Could I live without Digital and Communication Technologies?
Tumblr media
In this week’s blog post I will be discussing the week 1 driving question, about whether or not I believe I could live without Digital and Communication Technologies. Throughout the lecture and tutorial for week 1, we mainly had an introduction to the course, learnt about what the assignments will be, and what is expected of us as students in completing the course. However, in the tutorial we were asked the question “could you live without digital and communication technologies?”
Before I start saying more on the topic, I feel like it would be useful to specify what “digital and communication technologies” really means. My tutorial class defined it as multiple things, the ones that stood out being; a way to communicate with people from all around the world, an online community, and pieces of technology that are used in our day to day lives.
As a whole, my tutorial class were certain that we would be able to live without digital and communication technologies, however as we discussed this more, we realised that most of us barely remember a time where we have not been surrounded by some kind of technology allowing us to communicate with the wider world. I know personally, that although I have always done lots of sport and had younger sisters to play with for most of my life, my family has always had a TV, phone and even one of those huge box-like computers that my sisters and I could never quite figure out. We would nowadays be described as “Digital Natives” (Prensky, 2001), and it is true. Although I’d like to believe that I could live without digital and communication technologies, unless I was forced, I don’t believe that experience would go down very well.

This photo was taken in the Museo Casa de la Memoria Indómita. This museum was developed by families whose siblings, children, parents, or friends have been "disappeared". This particular exhibit had these ropes hanging to represent the countries that still use methods of torture to strike fear in those who are imprisoned. This shows that, globally, we still lack a sense of love and appreciation for the minds and bodies of others.
