Walk on the Preseli Hills. One of our favourite locations in West Wales, a short hike from the car to a rocky outcrop. Low Winter sun provides a rare opportunity to photograph the Sun (do not do this when the sun is high, it will injure you and kill your camera!) The trick here is to underexpose the sky so my daughter @natty.cordon is a silhouette. p.s. this was taken before she got her new leg!! Canon 5D mk3 with a 100mm macro f/2.8L lens at f/16 and exposed for only 1/3200 sec at iso 100 because of the bright sunlight. Pembrokeshire really is a beautiful place. The picture of the water is Newport estuary where I believe octopi were spotted a couple of weeks ago which was awesome. Mike provided great company for the whole weekend and the stroll up the Newport river bank. Thank you. He also introduced me to Youth Hostels! Awesome. The other pics were taken on my way home over the Preseli’s - what a view. The sky was crystal clear and I could see for miles. "A welcome break from a steep bike ride, I was as drained of colour as this image" I'm a big fan of colour, we live in a beautiful, vibrant world full of colour, so why remove it from the images we create? Well, sometimes when we picture a scene, it's easy to visualise it in #blackandwhite, where tones, texture and the contrasts of the scene appeal more than saturated hues. This delapidated old shed, near to a pretty farmhouse and one of the regions famous standing bluestones remained the most photogenic subject in the area. At the top of one of the steep hills, which make up the #preselimountains in #pembrokeshire I was pleased to have an excuse to stop. The corrugated iron structure was rusting, discoloured green paint of walls, peeled and faded, yet blending with the rust. The russet coloured roof, almost matching this blend, merely adding to the aesthetics. It had rustic, almost antique charm, yet the textures of the building seemed even more appealing, I couldn't resist reaching out and running my fingers over it's rippled surface. The ragged, rough feel of the aging paint and rust was extremely textile. Under a brooding sky, with dark clouds skulking across the ceiling to the scene, the textures seemed emphasised. The contrast of shadow and light, always in a constant battle for supremecy adding still greater depth. Colour seemed superfluous to this scene, an unecessary distraction, so it had to go. TIP: When deciding to photograph in black and white, it's necessary to visualise in #monochrome while still shooting in colour.
