관심만 갖고 정작 보는 건 몇 년이나 미뤘던 영화들 중, 오늘은 <셜리에 대한 모든 것 (Shirley: Visions of Reality)>을 봤다. 스토리는 모르겠지만 에드워드 호퍼의 그림들이 영화 장면들에 반영되어 그대로 나온다고 화제가 됐던 영화였다. 미술에 조예가 있는 편은 아니지만 예전부터 호퍼의 그림을 좋아하긴 했었고, 마침 호퍼 전시도 열릴 때 다녀왔었는데 (다만 시간이 없어 도슨트 따라 정신없이 보고 나와서 조금 아쉬웠지만) 이왕 생각난 거 이번 주말에 큰맘 먹고 보기로 했다.

솔직히 말하면, 영화는 지루했다. 호퍼 그림 그대로 장면을 만들어 낸 아이디어는 좋았지만, 더 재미있게 영화를 만들 수는 없었나 싶은... (사실은 어제 반 정도 보다가 잠들어서; 오늘 나머지를 봤다.)

위의 장면들은 모두 호퍼 그림과 거의 똑같은(?!) 화면이다. 호퍼 그림들이 약간 고독한 느낌이 있다고는 하는데, 그래서인가 이 영화에 나온 주인공 여자(Shirley겠지... 영화 어디에서도 그녀의 이름을 불러주는 사람은 없었다)의 나레이션도 그냥 혼잣말이었다. 극중에서 Shirley는 연극 배우인 것 같긴 한데, 그 외에는 딱히 뭐 스토리가 특별하게 있는 건 아닌 것 같다. 그냥 눈으로 호퍼 그림이 움직이는 �� 본다는 걸로 만족하면 될 듯...? 주변에 추천할 만한 영화는 아니었다. (사실 추천할 수 있긴 한데 - 잠 안 오는 사람에게 보여주면 좋을 듯. ㅋ)

영화 볼 때마다 사운드트랙을 꼭 보는데, 나와 연관된 음악이 하나 있었다.

To the Brim Again is an ode to drinking. Though it was created during (and informed by) a pandemic, it’s also timeless in its feeling. The song is heavy on reverie, with small weather systems of other moods swirling inside and accentuating it. Heath is a dizzying talent on the piano, and the piece is anything but boring as it dances through its different intensities. To the Brim Again is as intoxicating as it gets.

Volker Bertelmann is perhaps better known now as a film soundtrack composer, often in collaboration with Dustin O’Hallaran. But his alter ego Hauschka has been around for much longer. I first came across him from hearing about his prepared piano pieces, which piqued my interest as a fan of John Cage’s pioneering work in this 70 years previously. I was exciting to see him perform live at the Barbican as part of the Transcendentalists tour along with O’Hallaran and Johann Johannsson, a memorable musical event I’ve written about previously. I saw him more recently than that, also at the Barbican in their smaller venue at Milton Court in April 2019 for the release of his LP A Different Forest. Despite all the almost-avant garde credentials, Ferndorf contains fairly classically-structured pieces that sound less edgy or experimental to my ears now than they did 10 or so years ago. About half of the tracks here are improvised and watching him do this live is a thrill that can’t quite be captured with the same excitement as a recording. Highlights here are the opener Blue Bicycle which is rather delicate and precise; Rode Null which is one of my favourites, a perfect arrangement of piano, violin and percussion; and Neuschnee, which sounds like a track that should be on an album by Cluster or Neu! but instead it sounds almost parochial and wistful.
