Buck turned to Tommy, a curious expression on his face. "Hey, Tommy, I've been wondering... are you a gold star gay?" he asked, his voice casual yet inquisitive.

Tommy nearly choked on his drink, caught off guard by the sudden question. "What?" he sputtered, coughing as he tried to regain his composure.

"Oh, a gold star gay is-" Buck began to explain, but Tommy quickly cut him off.

"No, Ev, I know what it is," Tommy said, shaking his head with a wry smile. "And no, I'm not one."

"Tommy, do you think I qualify as a twunk?" Buck asked, a mischievous grin playing on his lips. Before Tommy could even process the question, Buck continued, "And would you consider yourself a wolf?"

Tommy's head was spinning at the rapid-fire questions Buck was throwing his way. He took a moment to compose himself, trying to process the unexpected turn their conversation had taken.

"Okay, hold on a second," Tommy said, holding up his hands in a gesture of pause. "First of all, where is all this coming from? What's with the sudden interest in gay terminology?"

Buck shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eye. "I don't know, I guess I'm just curious. I mean, we're both queer but we've never really talked about this stuff before."

Tommy couldn't help but smile at Buck's enthusiasm. He knew that once something piqued Buck's interest, he would dive headfirst into researching every aspect of it. It was one of the many things Tommy loved about him - his insatiable thirst for knowledge and his eagerness to share what he'd learned.

"I've been reading up on gay subcultures and identities," Buck continued, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Did you know that there are so many different labels and categories within the community? It's fascinating!"

Tommy leaned back, preparing himself for the inevitable info dump that was about to come his way. He loved watching Buck get animated about a new topic, his hands gesturing wildly as he shared all the interesting tidbits he'd discovered.

"So, apparently, a twunk is a twink who's more muscular, like a cross between a twink and a hunk. And a wolf is typically an older, more masculine guy who's attracted to younger, more slender men," Buck rattled off, barely pausing to take a breath.

Tommy chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. "Ev, you never cease to amaze me with your ability to absorb and retain information."

Buck grinned, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "I just find it all so interesting, you know? Learning about the different identities and experiences within our community. It helps me feel more connected, like I'm part of something bigger."

Tommy reached out, taking Buck's hand in his own and giving it a gentle squeeze. "I love that about you, baby. Your curiosity, your passion for learning."

Buck's expression softened, his eyes shining with affection. "And I love that you always indulge me.

"I wouldn't have it any other way," Tommy said, leaning in to press a soft kiss to Buck's lips. "Now, tell me more about these wolves and twunks. I have a feeling I'm about to get a full education."

Tommy couldn't help but chuckle as Buck enthusiastically delved into the intricacies of gay subcultures and identities. He loved seeing his boyfriend so passionate about a topic, his eyes alight with curiosity and eagerness to share his newfound knowledge.

However, as Buck continued to rattle off various terms and labels, Tommy felt the need to set a playful boundary. With a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth, he held up his hand in a mock gesture of surrender.

"Alright, Ev, Like I said I love your enthusiasm and I'm all for learning more about our community," Tommy said, his tone light and teasing. "But fair warning - if you start throwing around terms like 'bussy,' I might have to tap out."

Buck let out a hearty laugh, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Okay, okay, I get it. No need to venture into the more, uh, colorful parts of gay slang. I just get so excited about all this stuff, you know? It's like a whole new world to explore."

The way his boyfriend's eyes lit up with each new piece of information, the animated way he gestured as he spoke - it was all so quintessentially Evan and Tommy was enamored by it.

"You know," Tommy said, a fond smile playing on his lips, "watching you get so excited about learning new things is just about the most adorable sight in the world. I could listen to you talk about anything that catches your interest, for hours on end."

Buck's expression turned tender, his eyes shining with affection. "And I love that you're always here to listen, even when I'm geeking out over gay subcultures."

"I wouldn't have it any other way," Tommy said, tugging Buck closer.

Buck grinned, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "Well, lucky for you, I've got plenty more to share. Did you know there's a whole subset of the community known as 'otters'?"

Tommy chuckled, shaking his head fondly. "I can't say that I did, but I have a feeling I'm about to find out."

"Oh, you bet you are," Buck said, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "But first, what do you say we order some pizza and cuddle up on the couch? I think this calls for a cozy night in, don't you?"

"That sounds perfect," Tommy agreed, pressing a soft kiss to Buck's forehead. "You order the pizza, I'll grab the blankets, and then you can enlighten me on the world of otters and any other fascinating subcultures you've discovered."

As they settled in for a night of good food, great company, and endless learning, Tommy couldn't help but feel like the luckiest man in the world.

But yeah, lets chat some about amazing features of the 16^12 simulationist setting, its virtual realms' and a couple more components worth talking about as the aspie I am.

While '(expt 16 12) is also a topical info-dumping mechanism, a personal worldview expose, a manifestation toybox and so much more, this whole... paracosm I invented really has started as a reaction to a couple trends I observed in mainstream multimedia during my childhood, like 2000s movies' X-Men, Halo 2, Godzilla & documentaries I used to watch regularly. As the hobbyist historian I am inside, I fantasized about distant future character scenarios where one persistent OC (initially called Nexus) and a few more corrected events in movies and stuff and that kinda thread-mill carries onto me even now but in further abstracted ways.

Now the premise is that Jana (new name for such a mothfolk construct INTJ individual) studies and supervises long-running history simulations at the dusk of time itself (black holes epoch - iron stars aka way farther in time towards heat death) around some Matrioshka Brain with less and less of her peers sticking around. And as the one constant android remaining in this facility, she is slowly granted & gifted the responsibility to log, to archive, to supervise... in the search for a solution to entropy, which does lay directly within their bare hands. (kinda Rags to Riches for sapient computers & with some supplemental esoteric aspects attached as well to emulate the cycle / circle of life trope) Calling that rendering of the trope as "GitWorld Power Escalation" ^*^

Which does grant my half-speculative setting plenty of possibility room while retaining key positive / constructive elements across various different simulations in very immersive manners... And yeah, I will be going over some more themes & specifics too within these reality hexagon instances (taking hints from the Library of Babel / Memex & some neuroscience video here) quite soon as their planning / implementation / manifestation is going to be very interesting to see unfold on live-streams and whatever other media forms I wanna explore.

The "Servitor" speculative fiction project is only one curated narrative among many set within one such reality hexagon, with Kate & Ava being agents inside such virtual context windows. Will try my best to keep you all updated on its progress, it has been slower than I would like but it is moving forth well enough.

Currently in the life of a Cycle Breaker | Spiritual Person 😂

This is a rant | sarcasm induced rage (kinda) | trauma dump because I'm exhausted and no one else understands this path except other astrology/spiritual people. And if I said this to the average person they'd look at me like I had lost my mind but it's decades worth of knowledge I've accumulated over time after consulting with other spiritual mentors\teachers.

If you don't agree that's fine. This has just been my experience and I can talk about any of it if you so wish, because there's a toxic rhetoric associated with a lot of things in the spiritual community, but it's just been misconstrued and idolized, resulting in misinformation. And it's extremely dangerous to spread said misinformation without doing thorough research and offering proper education on the topic. And if you believe I'm wrong, I invite you to educate me, because I always want to consider other viewpoints and be respectful.

Your beliefs might not align with mine and that's okay. I have friends in various spiritual circles and we all relate on some level even though our practices are very different. I have friends that are Christians, Witches, Christian Witches (Surprisingly), Pagans, Buddhists, Root Workers, Atheists, etc. But ultimately, we all feel called to a hyper-specific path and purpose, and we lean on one another. My hopes is to extend a piece of my journey to you all to create a sense of community if you're in need of one. No matter what your beliefs are.

Not to mention, I feel like it's relevant because so many placements correlate with an interest in the occult and mysticism. But I never really see anyone talk about them together.

Me in my fourth house profection year after working through my Saturnian lessons in my 2nd and 3rd house year, with my Saturn return on the horizon preparing to knock me on my ass while I battle the figurative demons of maternal generational trauma. While also implementing the lessons I learned regarding Saturn in the 3rd House by readying myself to unleash my truth in the form of a poetry book. While also grieving the unmet needs of my inner child due to grief associated with a parent I never got to know.

Then the Universe decides to drop kick a strange synchronicity regarding my twin flame after he's been haunting my dreams FOR THE PAST YEAR after I haven't thought about him in like five years. But I didn't know he was my twin flame (And that's just a very confusing topic with a lot of nuance that I took a very long time to examine and dissect carefully because spiritual psychosis is a thing, but I've made a determination after consulting with my mentors. I can talk more about this if yall want. Specifically from an astrological standpoint) and the math starts mathing. Because the coincidences no longer feel like coincidences.

But now Idk wtf this means and it's confusing. Because I'm also working through lessons with a karmic, to which we are both very aware that we are each others' karmics and we're ok with that because we make better friends anyways and have agreed it was a relationship of convienece while we sort our own shit out. (not ideal but we were literal teenagers when we got together + inflation is a thing so it's what works right now)

All in the midst of a career change, trying to get certified in astrology, and learn tarot, while also beginning a path of working with Hekate (I can also talk about this if anyone wants more info) and constantly arguing with my ancestors because they want me to complete my lessons quicker than I am, but I have to kindly humble them that I'm undoing the trauma they left behind. While also helping my niece break generational curses in the midst.

And I find no peace in my sleep because I accidentally astral project every other night because I have a 12th house stellium. Or my twin is barging in my perfectly peaceful dreams out of no where, to which I'm instantly annoyed about. So I'm always exhausted.

But I really just want to get my Saturn return over with and get to this glow up everyone raves about and experience a tiny sliver of peace for five seconds. 😅

But for real though, I like to be open with all of you. We all have our own path and it consists of different things. Not all of us will adopt the same ideologies or opinions about certain things in the spiritual world. And that's okay. To each their own, as long as you aren't condoning abuse, culturally appropriating, or talking down to others, whatever your path consists of is okay!

But seriously, know the signs of spiritual psychosis. Dissect spiritual ideologies you hear about online with a fine tooth comb. Consult experienced spiritualists or mentors. Find a community you can trust. And I'm going to say it again - don't culturally appropriate.

Also, don't jump headfirst into something you don't know anything about. Especially regarding paganism and witchcraft. Research. Consult others. Listen to your intuition.

I'm happy to answer any questions you all might have! (Just remember though, it might take me some time to get to everyones questions, but I will get to all of them). My take on things will likely be very different from another spiritualists', but that's ok. You learn by asking and seeing if it resonates.

I've been on this path for quite some time, and felt like it was the right time to share some of what I know, in hopes it will help someone else that's in the same spot I was in years ago.

Especially if you're an 8th/9th/12th Houser, you could be pushed to adopt new belief systems. Yours doesn't have to look like mine, but I'm happy to share my journey about how I landed where I ended up landing with my belief system and how I was sure it was right for me.

It doesn't feel right to keep it to myself. So please, ask away. I was also hesitant to share this because of others' pre-conceived ideas and beliefs, but I know there's someone else out there feeling how I was feeling in the beginning.

Chapter 5: Sick and Tired

The next several weeks were filled with activity. Even if Crosshair wanted to improve his sleep schedule, he couldn't with the amount of training and preparing Hunter was having them do.

They were more or less on their own now, free to do whatever they felt necessary to prove themselves for deployment. Commander Cody had accompanied a troop of injured soldiers returning to the planet for treatment, spending one day with the Clone Force to go over expectations and progress before heading back out into the warring galaxy. After that, it was all on Sergeant Hunter to push them. And boy, did he ever.

Every day focused on a simulation run, where Hunter would make them start the mission over any time someone missed their mark or made the wrong call, and refused to let them leave until they had run it through perfectly at least five different ways. In their "free time," they practiced with their own weapons and gear, trying to best their own scores, learn new tricks, and just nail down a personal rhythm.

Evenings were mostly spent learning various strategies, and occasionally cleaning up or decorating their gear. They'd settled on some skull imagery and a black-and-red color scheme that not only looked cool, but also made them really stand apart from the regs. There was also talk about them getting a specially-outfitted ship in the next week. Their dedication kept them from getting a decent amount of sleep each night, but Hunter argued that's how it would be out in the field, so might as well get used to it.

Outside of their group and a few protocol droids that assisted them with odd errands, there was only one other they saw on a regular basis. Doctor Vo. Sometimes it was scheduled visits to the examination room, other times she observed their training sessions. If the others were nervous with her watching, Crosshair couldn't tell. He tried to play it cool, too, and only focus on the mission. But any shot he missed made him flush beneath his helmet in embarrassment. He really, really wanted to impress her.

It was starting to distract him.

After a particularly grueling day through the simulation room, where they'd pretended to be rescuing hostages from a temple on the forest moon of Endor, the four of them lay panting and sweating on the tile floor of the locker room. Tired, but satisfied. They were getting really good.

"Tomorrow we're running the Mon Cala sim," said Hunter, the first to catch his breath and stand back up. He started peeling off his blacks, heading for the refresher.

Crosshair and Tech shared a weary look, and even Wrecker let out a little groan.

"Um, Hunter," Tech sat up to catch him before he left the room. "We really ought to take a day to rest."

"No," the Sergeant immediately disagreed. He wadded up his sweaty clothes and tossed them like a ball into the hamper on the other side of the locker. "War doesn't rest, and neither should we."

"Actually, we should."

Tech rose to his feet, his face screwed up in what they all recognized as a sign he was about to info-dump. Crosshair and Wrecker started to get up as well, knowing this would be too good to watch from the floor. Hunter had proven himself to be a capable leader, but he wasn't perfect. And now was the first time one of them was challenging him.

"According to leading studies, on both human and humanoid bodies, rest is a critical part to ensuring continued performance. It is essential that our bodies have time to recover and repair before we push them again."

Hunter had his arms folded over his bare chest. "Is that so?"

It was more of a rhetorical question, but Tech took it as permission to really spew forth all the details he had on the topic.

"Yes. See, any type of physical exercise creates microscopic tears in the tissue of your muscles, which then needs rest in order for fibroblast cells to repair them and create stronger tissue. If that repair isn't done, it can result in muscle fatigue and soreness and even actual injury."

Crosshair shifted uncomfortably. He had actually sustained an injury earlier that morning, one that he hadn't told any of them about, not only because it was embarrassing, but because it actually hadn't bothered him at first. But as the day drew on, the pain near his ribs grew worse. Now he felt almost sick to be standing up.

"In addition to that," Tech was still rambling on, "there's the glycogen carbohydrates that are broken down to be used for energy, which also needs to rest to replenish. That energy is needed for both physical and mental performance. However, physical exertion also boosts other hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which, when they are overproduced through over-exercise, can interfere with getting quality sleep. So a double-whammy."

Tech seemed ready to continue making points but Hunter finally held up a hand.

"Okay, okay, Tech. I get it. I know it's important. But we're not always going to have the luxury of taking days off once we're out of here. I don't want us getting used to doing whatever we want whenever we feel like it."

Wrecker groaned loudly. "What do you mean? We haven't done anything we've wanted to do. We don't get to pick the sims. We can't go to bed without your permission. If anyone's doing whatever they want whenever they feel like it, it's you."

Hunter's eyes flashed dangerously and he pointed an angry finger up at his large brother. "That's not true, Wrecker, and you know it. I'm busting my ass off, same as all you. You don't think I want to take a break too? My head hurts all the time now. There's no relief anymore, just constant... stimulation...."

His voice petered out with a heavy sigh. The three of them looked amongst each other but said nothing. Hunter pinched the bridge of his nose in thought for a moment. "I just... I want us to be prepared. All those stories we hear, from Cody and Joan and everyone, about what it's really like out there.... Brothers, the galaxy needs us. We need to be the best."

Tech nodded his head sympathetically. "We understand, Hunter. We know you're working hard. All I'm saying is if we want to be the best, we have to take what breaks we can get. While we can still get them. Otherwise, we risk running ourselves into the ground before we've even had the change to get out and help anyone."

Hunter chewed it over before conceding, just a little bit. "Fine, we can take the rest of the evening. I won't open the strategy manuals, and it'll be lights about by 8."

Wrecker let out a satisfied holler, starting to head for the showers himself. But Tech looked at him suspiciously.

"And tomorrow...?"

Hunter chuckled darkly. "Oh we're still running the Mon Cala sim. I've been looking forward to that one all week. You boys will be fine."

The Sergeant clapped Crosshair on the back as he turned to leave, causing the sniper to immediately double over in pain. He'd been quiet the whole argument, despite having many points to contribute himself. The pain in his abdomen had become too much. All he could do was focus on his breathing.

"Oh kriff," Hunter cursed, catching him by the shoulder.

"Cross, are you injured?" Tech scurried over, concerned. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"I'm fine," Crosshair spat out. He shook Hunter's grip off and mustered up whatever strength he could to stand up straight again. He was not giving them any reason to ask what had happened. "I just pulled a muscle but I'm fine. It's nothing."

Tech was trying to catch Hunter's eye, mostly likely to continue arguing against tomorrow's training now that a new reason had presented itself. But Wrecker spoke up first.

"You should see Joan," he suggested.

"I'm fine," Crosshair growled again. He definitely didn't want her to know about the injury, either.

"Just go," Hunter huffed. "Even if you are fine, at least you get to see her."

Crosshair looked back to find the three of them all had knowing smirks on their faces. He wanted to punch them, but he also couldn't argue. It would be nice to see her.

Even if she was the reason he'd gotten himself injured.

A Cure for Insomnia CH.5

A scream shocks you out of your fuzzy thoughts. You look around and notice Connor sitting alert and looking like he wants to run down the hallway this very instant.

“Connor?” the head snaps to you immediately and before you can even question his presence in your home he jumps up and barks then walks in circles near the door.

Great a dog who has no sense of horror movie tropes. Since the scream did come from inside your house you should go find the person who made it and see what's wrong. Also maybe get clarification on why they're in your home. You aren't dead and are still in the same clothes so you figure you're alright around them. You follow Connor to where Toby is, in your kitchen staring out the window standing at a very odd angle. Like he caught himself before he fell backwards but hadn't bothered to get up.

“What's up....oh.” is all you can say as you see Chonk's head whip towards you and Connor before he books it for the tree line. Damn that fat raccoon can run fast, good to know if he ever wants to chase you down in the future. Which he might if you don't leave his slice of pizza out today.

“'oh' 'oh', that's all yo-you've got to say about a giant fuck-ing ra-mrrow- raccoon!?!” maybe thinking this guy was composed and unphased was a misconception, if seeing Chonk has put his world views in question.

“I mean he probably just eats a lot of pizza.” to put it simply you never gave much thought to the fat little trash thief, he was just fat and he existed. Visiting your home for the slice he deemed his every other week. Probably had other homes in Kepler he terrorized for the same reasons. God knows Leo would never put up with a raccoon trashing his store for his pizza. Or even his home for that matter.

“He's nearly half the size of Connor!” looking down towards Connor you tilt your head.

“Are we talking about with his legs or just his torso?” you could maybe see the size comparison with the dog's body but with his height it was a different matter all together.

Toby rolls his eyes before going and sitting down at the small breakfast table where he seemed to have found your fidget cube and had been well fidgeting with it. You take the seat opposite of him, it's weird having a guest over especially when you didn't invite them in. Well now that removes the chances of him being a vampire you suppose.

Perfect not a kidnapper, nor a vampire, and he's helped you out twice now. The two of you might well be on your way to becoming best friends. That is if he could get past this episode of yours.

“I still don't know what happened last night, but I'm done with the freak out.” you say as you idly pet Connor.

“...What?” he's squinting at you trying to get a read on how anyone bounces back from something like that so calmly in a matter of hours. Especially when he'd been checking up on you and Connor only to see you still staring off into space.

“Oh, uh... I have Autism. Isn't good for much but helps me rationalize events quicker and move past emotional and mental breakdowns pretty quick too.”

“Is that an Autism thing?” you shrug at his question as he jerks his shoulders forwards a few times.

“Probably more of a me thing, but I've read the trait tends to be more common in those of us who are neurodivergent.”

You hear a murmur of telling someone later later. Filing that away to take note of another day you stare at Toby who in turn stares back. This goes on for a bit, you couldn't even classify it as a staring contest since you are both still blinking occasionally. You aren't really sure if you should say 'thank you' first and then ask the man what he's doing in your home or wait for him to break the silence. But as you stare at Toby, into his eyes, you get the feeling this man is more of a zombie than anything else. The type to drag along and go at a snails pace rather than get into the messy bits in one go...ironic choice for comparison.

“Thank you for driving me home...but why are you still here?” you hear a huff of laughter?

“You weren't really in a position...” knuckles pop “to be left alone. What if you got back into your car again?” his eyes cut and there's a bit of bite to his words...it wasn't directed towards you, you can feel that much.

“Fair enough.” you glance at the stove and see the clock shine a little before six. “Would you like some breakfast” his neck snaps to the left triggering your own to snap as well, “or a ride home?” you finish asking.

“Can you make something for Connor too? Don't trust you behind the wheel yet.”

“Oh sure! What does he normally eat?” Perking up at the thought of the dog being off duty, that means actual pets!

“He-mrrow- normally gets oatmeal with some fruit or veg and anything raw I can find.” He finishes with a whistle for Connor's attention, and then a pointed finger flipping down in front of him. The dog trots over and sits down, while Toby takes off the vest you look through your cupboards to find the rolled oats you'd gotten as incentive to eat in the mornings before realizing you only liked them on certain days.

“So what does Tobias normally eat?” you call out as you look for some honey you know you threw in the cupboards.

“Anything really. I don't do slimy textures or anything watery.”

“Watery? Like soups?” Found a can of pumpkin, it's still in date too, perfect.

“Watery like...when you put too much water in oatmeal.” He nods when you silently show him the can of pumpkin asking if that'd be fine for his boy, who is sitting down drooling from his smiling face as Toby tussles his ears.

“Ahhh, thin watery got it.” You hear movement and a few grunts from Toby as you assume he tics, trying to ignore them so they won't trigger your own you look through the fridge. You suddenly take a deep breath, while looking for a meat in your fridge, and let out a shrill trill. Kinda sounds like a Togepi's cry from the cartoon. Shaking your head your eyes catch the eggs and turkey sausages you have.

“Will turkey sausage and eggs work for you two?”

“Never had turkey sausage but it should be fine.” he's leaning forward resting his head in his arms on the table as Connor lays by his bouncing feet.

You set the eye to medium heat and put the sausages on first, leaving three out for Connor. He is a big dog after all. You turned your focus on preparing Connor's oatmeal while the sausages cooked. It was kinda nice having company over even though the circumstances weren't the best. Your neck jerks to the side three times before pulling back. There's more on the way your neck didn't crack and your body doesn't let up until it does.

“So what disorder do you have?” You turn to give Toby a confused look you hope he can read through your mask.

“...I have a few..you want the list?”

“No, the tics. Lower level Tourettes or what?”

“Oh, they stem from my” head jerking twice to the side before cracking “there we go.” “Sorry, they stem from my Autism, at least that's the best I can gather without seeing a specialist. Virginia doctors suck big time.”

“Tell me about it.” that perks you right up, you knew you caught a transatlantic accent, it's pretty much the lack of an accent that gives Virginians away so easily. You already have two guesses on where Toby came from.

“I knew it, you're from Halifax aren't you?!” Since you've turned around to face him you see the exact moment his face drops. Eyes shocked wide open.

“How...did”

“Oh it's easy once you know what to listen for, in fact it was the total lack of any distinguishing accent or use of slang that gave you a way. A lot of people don't notice what they take from their communities linguistically speaking. And for us Virginians it's what we don't take. It's such a bland neutral midpoint it's why it had been so coveted during the radio era and while we might've lost the in-fluctuations as time went by, no longer needing them for our voices to be heard over various frequencies....am I talking too much you can tell me to shut up, really you won't hurt my feelings.” you give Toby a minute to process everything you've just said.

“Special interest?”

“mmm, more a...an interesting factoid.” you hope he registers your smile, hell you hope he doesn't think you're weird. You know how much you can be sometimes, especially when you info dump or overshare information. He manages to nod along with you before finding his voice again.

“Lemme guess NOVA?”

“Pfft, seriously.” you really need him to at least register the disgust on your face if he hasn't been able to read you before, “Listen the Beach isn't much better but I'd probably off myself if I was from NOVA.”

“A public service really.”

You both stare at each other before breaking into a fit of laughter. It's nothing huge but it does seem to put Toby more at ease you noticed. In the time it took you to make breakfast for all three of you you've found out a little bit more about Toby.

He's uncomfortable talking about his hometown, at least you assume, so instead he mentions that he recently came to town with his friends, Brian and Tim. Talks mostly about Connor and you learn he's to help alert Toby of his Tourettes when driving and he can even detect seizures with Brian. That's amazing, service dogs have sure come a long way! And you love hearing what a silly puppy Connor is off duty, it makes you smile. Toby in turn asks about you, and you are such a well of stories. You tell him about your family back on the coast, about your recent move to Kepler, give him a little info on Kepler to help him adjust to his stay, and even get on the topic of your extensive work with animals.

“Sounds like you were working towards being a trainer, why didn't you?”

Making a sound that sort of sounds like a jumbled 'I dunno', “Sort of don't like people that much. Dogs are fine, less complex and less likely to complain when you do something in a different way. But a trainer doesn't train the dog, they train the people.” You're placing Connor's food in front of him as he sits patiently.

It's quiet for a moment as you place a plate in front of Toby and set yours down as well. Not tense just quiet, it's very calming really. Until Toby ruins it.

“Thanks Connor.”

Like he's a voice actor who is over exaggerating the sound effects of a dog munching away at their bowl. Connor inhales harshly before diving head first into the bowl. The dog is ferociously tearing into his breakfast and you can't help the laughter that spills from you at his enthusiasm. Hands coming up near your face and shaking as you shift from foot to foot. It's a happy stim, cute dogs are of course a trigger, someone can complain later you're happy to see a happy excited pup any day.

Taking your seat and turning your attention to your food, you see Toby hasn't touched his own. He's staring at the plate with a furrowed brow, he glances up to you as you remove your mask. You feel a bit vulnerable to be honest.

“Oh is something wrong? Do you want something else?”  He's a guest who's helped you twice now the least you can do is make sure he leaves your home full.

It takes a moment but he gathers his thoughts to explain, “I have a scar...it's pretty bad.” he looks away from you.

You tilt your head not quiet understanding what he means, “Cool story, do you want me to look away?”

He stalls at this, you just keep throwing him for a loop since you met the other day. While he thinks on it you scoop some of your eggs on your spoon and into your mouth. Perfect texture and prefect flavor, today will be good.

Toby seems to have made his decision and without any show he takes his mask off to begin eating. You can see the scar he was talking about, and while the currently red and bleeding'?!' scar on the left corner of his mouth was bad it wasn't much compared to the gaping hole further up that side on his cheek. You can clearly see the even whiter, how this boy is so pale is beyond you, skin around the edges suggesting the wound was older and had started to heal at some point. But you could see most of the teeth on the left side of his mouth. You've never seen these teeth while they were still in the head. A skull or 3D model yea. But never a living breathing person's head. It's fascinating really, you hadn't even noticed that you finished your breakfast as you watched him eat, you were so enthralled.

“You know your lip's bleeding right?” eyes never leaving the boy's teeth as you see them grind down the eggs into the tiniest particles. Neat!

“Rwhatf?” the way he can talk with his mouth full without spilling it from the hole is fucking magic and you won't hear another word on it.

He takes a drink of water, again it doesn't spill. Then you notice the slight tilt of his head...oh he's had practice doing this. Impressive honestly.

“That's what you choose to comment on?” his eyes narrow at you're still gawking form.

“I'm sorry I've just never seen those type of teeth still in head, normally muscle and...and skin cover them. So this is really cool to see them in action!” gosh you're so damn weird. By his stupefied expression Toby seems to think so too.

“Plus the wound looks healed but the lips look fresh,” you get up and grab a few paper towels bringing them over to offer to Toby, “Not to mention it's bleeding and you haven't once wiped it.”

He doesn't reply as he takes the napkins from you and dabs at his scarred lip, looking back and seeing blood just as you said. He was right when he thought he'd been biting himself a few hours ago. He'd totally forgotten to check after getting you home.

“Well I don't feel it so I didn't know actually.” he just resumes eating as if this conversation didn't happen.

“Didn't, didn't, didn't” you get stuck in a loop for a bit before breaking out “you didn't feel it? What do you have congenital insensitivity to pain?” you ask incredulously.

“I haven't heard it called that since I got diagnosed.” still eating he looks at you through his long eyelashes.

This dude could not be a real person. You had to have been imagining your dream friend. Everything you learned about Toby was more interesting than the last...at least for you it was.

“Medical history podcasts are interesting.” you shrug, “should I get the first aid kit?” at his shrug you get up and go to your bathroom to retrieve the kit.

Coming back into the kitchen you catch Toby lowering your plates for Connor to lick clean. You don't see a problem with it but you will wash everything twice since the pup has slobbered on nearly everything anyway. When you don't say anything he lets Connor continue before placing the dishes in your sink.

“Such a big help” you say patting Connor's head as you pass him, “Yea I really am” Toby says as he sits back down. Propping his arm up on the table to rest his head on his knuckles, it was such a fluid and casual motion. As if he's sat at this table everyday of his life, like this was his home and you were his guest. Tied in with how comfy he is man spreading at your kitchen table you'd say he made himself at home just fine.

You smile and scoot your chair next to him first aid kit in between you on the table. Toby looks between you and the kit before leaning in closer for you to work. Grabbing the antiseptic cleaning towels you go to wipe Toby's lip when he flinches away. Probably faking to see your reaction.

“Oh, fuck off you have CIPA.” you laugh grabbing his chin to keep him in place. He rolls his eyes “And you're weird.” The vibrations feel weird against your fingers.

“I know.” you continue cleaning the small bite mark? Well he does have CIPA he wouldn't be able to feel the pain if he was gnawing at his lips. Would he be able to taste the metallic tang of his blood or were taste buds effected by the disorder too? You might need to do another deep dive on this, it just became relevant. Maybe an anxious tic, judging from the larger wound it could be possible. Wearing a mask must help to hide it but not not to stop it getting worse if no one can call you out on it.

“That wasn't an insult...” he says making you look up into his eyes as you dry the wound, “I know.” You smile down at him, knowing this time he can see it on your maskless face.

When you finished cleaning his wounded lips, you drove Toby and Connor back to their home. Which turned out to be the RV at the forgotten entrance of the forest. Toby had been a little wary you knew where he was talking about but seemed to shake it off just as quick when you mentioned hiking a lot and using that entrance because it was the closest to you.

He had put Connor's vest back on and hopped in the back with him. You noticed from the review that Connor's full attention was on you.

“This set up let's him focus on the driver, so he'll tell us if something will impede your driving.” Well that explains Brian's position the first time you four met.

Nodding you sync you phone with the car's bluetooth and pass it to Toby with spotify open.

“Rules of the road, passenger picks music.” you say simply when he questioned it.

He quickly clicked your last playlist. Probably either too lazy to find something or trying to get a better read on you. Music says a lot about a person even if not everyone thinks that way. And unfortunately for you this playlist screams mental illness and a need for therapy. But you have folk punk. So who needs therapy when you can just scream cry these lyrics.

Toby doesn't comment on it, either just totally apathetic or maybe he likes it. He's a bit of an enigma, he's open and honest for the most part but saves his opinions unless directly asked.

Even after making it to the RV without incident Toby tries to distract you for a bit and tempt you out of the car with the possibility of playing with Connor. As fun as the idea sounds and as much as you don't want to be rude, you're very tired and drained. Probably more from “hanging out” with Toby this morning than your actual episode last night. Plus you understand Toby's just trying to be nice and maybe ensure your safety.

“Could I maybe rain-check? I'm actually really tired.” you say with your most polite smile, though he can't see it through the mask  you know he sees the crinkle of your eyes.

“Sure, just get home safe.” you feel that's less about you, but you aren't sure what the hanging subject is. So cryptic.

“Yup,” you chirp, “See you later Tobias!” as you start to back out back onto the road you hear Toby say “ Later YN.”

Driving off you can't keep the smile off of your face. Toby's a nice guy, you hope you get to spend more time with him. And this time the thought isn't centered around also hanging out with Connor. Just about enjoying Toby's company.

Getting home and locking your door you strip your jeans and flannel, leaving you only in your muscle tee, and curl up in your unkempt sheets. You'll do laundry later, right now was time for a little nap.

Golden Kamuy re-reading: CHAP 5: ‘Hokuchin unit’

Trasposed in: Episode 2 ‘Nopperabō’

What follows are my ramblings over Golden Kamuy chapter by chapter, comprehensive of summary of the chapter, comparisons with the anime transposition, spoilers, theories, discussions about how a page or a panel was drawn and whatever else caught my attention.

As Golden Kamuy hasn’t ended yet I might miss some details that will be relevant in the future or make a wrong theory (or change my mind in the future on that theory). Consider yourself warned.

Also occasionally you’ll find ramblings for the covers or the extra contained in the volumes.

CHAP 5: ‘Hokuchin unit’

The cover starts the beginning of ‘weird’ covers… this one has Asirpa being friendly with a squirrel… instead than being interested in eating it.

The title of the chapter refers to how also was called the 7th division, about which we get some info written in superimposed text, while Ogata and Sugimoto face each other.

After the info dump we’ve Sugimoto thinking at how it was bad enough to deal with the prisoners but the soldiers would be a real problems… even if he thinks Ogata and Co would be the dregs of the unit… which is actually his assumption as Tsurumi’s unit isn’t bad at all and Tsurumi himself will admit Ogata is one of his best men.

Ogata, who was ready to fight him (we see him at first in combat position, blade toward Sugimoto), seeing Sugimoto isn’t attacking him immediately, relaxes as well and asks him what unit Sugimoto is from. Sugimoto replies he was from the 1st, though his term has ended and he was discharged.

Ogata comments they might have met up at 203 hill. It’s sort of fun how they’re chatting casually, but it hints at how neither of them is really invested in just killing the other if they can avoid it. Not that they aren’t ready to do it if needed, it’s just that they aren’t bloodthirsty.

Ogata suggests Sugimoto to let them (the 7th) have the tattooed body, implying otherwise they would have to kill him.

Sugimoto refuses, claiming he’s not doing this for money but for the woman he loves. This sentence is twice as relevant.

In that moment it will mark the point in which the chatting has to end because clearly neither is willing to back away from the tattooed skin. Ogata made clear that if Sugimoto insists in wanting to keep it, they will have to kill him and Sugimoto made clear not only that he won’t give up on it but also that he won’t even let himself be bribed as he’s not doing this for money. Hence they can only fight to death for the possession of the skin.

There’s to say that actually Sugimoto in that moment was in this for the money. Money he wanted to use for Umeko, all right, but always money. It’s not as he’s in this because Umeko is a skin collector. But well, I guess since Ogata hadn’t really offered they’ll buy the skin from him, especially at the price Sugimoto needs, the real meaning of the sentence is ‘I’m not in this because I’m greedy but because I need money for the woman I love’… so maybe there was still room for bargaining… though I don’t think Ogata was allowed to offer 200 yen for a skin, so it’s not like Ogata could bargain anyway.

The other thing due to which this exchange is relevant is that Ogata will remember it.

I don’t know if, at first, Ogata thought that Sugimoto was talking about Asirpa or not (Asirpa is a child and, although she has a crush on Sugimoto, contrary to what some think, Sugimoto so far doesn’t absolutely see her as a potential love interest and he’s still completely taken by Umeko…and the same goes for the whole cast as none of them see Asirpa as a potential love interest or a woman, Ushiyama, who would chase whatever female he were to meet, specifically tells Asirpa to grow up), but when Sugimoto will talk to Asirpa about how he’s doing all this for his best friend’s widow, Ogata will connect the dots and say that she’s the woman he was talking about when he said he was doing it for the woman he loved… indirectly informing Asirpa hers is an one sided crush.

There’s to wonder what Ogata thinks of the whole thing, since he saw his mother pining for a man who never returned her feelings. The whole parallel between Asirpa and his mother is made more ironic by how Asirpa will keep on feeding him and taking care of him, to the point we might say she’ll become his replacement mother…).

As a sidenote in the anime it’s Ogata who’ll bring the money topic up, asking Sugimoto if he’s doing this for the money, to which Sugimoto will reply he’s doing it for the woman he loves… while in the manga it seems it’s Sugimoto who does it, by saying he’s not doing it for money but for the woman he loves. Not a big difference though.

Oh, as Sugimoto spoke he fixed his hat… which is sort of weird (wouldn’t it be better if he had removed it?) but I guess it’s the visual way in which the manga shows us he prepared himself to fight… and this might be twice as powerful if hats are really meant to represent soldiers, as it would imply Sugimoto is ‘ready to go at war against Ogata’. But well, it might be just me.

Back to the story at this point Ogata attacks Sugimoto but, as said before, Sugimoto is AMAZING at close combat so it’s not like Ogata had a chance as Sugimoto immediately grabs his arm, sends him on the ground and breaks said arm.

In the anime, to make the scene a bit more action oriented, Ogata gets to swing the blade a little before Sugimoto grabs him. I understand why they did it, but Sugimoto and Ogata are actually meant to be opposite in their own abilities, with Sugimoto being horrible at shooting but amazing at fighting and Ogata being exactly the reverse, amazing at shooting, poor at fighting (though maybe not so bad as Sugimoto is at shooting).

When Ogata’s arm is broken, Ogata is also forced to let go of the bayonet, which Sugimoto grabs and try to use to stab his neck, fundamentally planning to kill him.

In the anime it’s not so clear as we only see Sugimoto holding the bayonet and remaining still but in the manga is more visible both by Sugimoto’s expression and how he was holding the bayonet pointed at Ogata’s neck and how his hand was already moving to deliver the blow.

Even Sugimoto’s gaze through the whole scene can tell us Sugimoto is ready to kill.

In short, Asirpa calling Sugimoto effectively stopped him from killing Ogata.

I’ve always wondered how Ogata sees Asirpa’s intervention. Is he grateful she saved his life? Or annoyed? Or he just didn’t realize it? Hard to say.

Anyway now we more or less know who Ogata is and the fandom has its own opinions about him but, back then, Sugimoto had no idea who Ogata was beyond that he worked for the 7th. Ogata could have been a good guy, like Tanigaki or even more than Tanigaki for all that Sugimoto knew, merely forced to obey orders. After all, later he’ll complain that Ogata betrayed the 7th, meaning he didn’t expect Ogata to go against the orders he received.

So why is he so ready to kill a guy that, for all he knows, might only be obeying to orders and that he had just rendered helpless?

Later Sugimoto will tell us when he was in war he learned to tell himself that Russians don’t have human hearts so don’t feel pain when they die and therefore there’s no point to feel guilty about killing them (chap 100).

It’s a belief Sugimoto tried to impart to Asirpa as well and that he applies to all his enemies. Ogata is an enemy at this point, nothing else matter, killing him for Sugimoto is the only way to survive, the way war brainwashed him into thinking, and it doesn’t really matter if Ogata is helpless. For Sugimoto he’s an enemy, a threat and threats have to be destroyed.

Even though Sugimoto didn’t manage to kill Ogata, Sugimoto will always distrust him. This moment will be always between them, haunting Sugimoto’s relationship with Ogata.

In the beginning it’s possible Sugimoto simply couldn’t let it go because, if Ogata had turned out to be a good guy, Sugimoto would have to face the guilt for having tried to kill a good guy who was only doing his duty. Later though, when Ogata (and Kiroranke) will escape with Asirpa after Ogata killed Wilk and shoot him, Sugimoto will likely start to see his failure in killing Ogata as something negative. If he had killed Ogata right then, the other wouldn’t have managed to take Asirpa from him.

We’ll see in chap 171, when Enonoka will be taken as hostage by a man, how Sugimoto will subconsciously see her as Asirpa and he’ll face the man in a way that will present various parallelism how his fight with Ogata went in this chapter…

...including the fact Sugimoto will try to kill that man by stabbing him after rendering him helpless. Sugimoto will be stopped from killing him again, by some Ainu this time, but he’ll insist it would have been better if they had let him kill that man.

After all, in the story, despite Asirpa speaking over and over against killing people and Sugimoto trying to humour her here and there, Sugimoto will remain persuaded that’s the best way to deal with enemies, and, after she was taken from him, this belief likely only grew stronger.

Sugimoto knows killing is wrong…

...but he will still think it’s the best option for him most of the times.

It will be interesting to see if he’ll ever manage to embrace Asirpa’s view against killing.

Back to the story, Sugimoto stops from killing Ogata because Asirpa called him, however, since Asirpa called him ‘Sugimoto’, Ogata finally manages to figure out he’s facing ‘Sugimoto, the immortal’.

…Really Sugimoto should have been hellish popular during the war, everyone and their moms know about him….

Ogata then manages to stab with his fingers Sugimoto’s eyes and catches that moment to escape. It’s worth to mention that, despite Sugimoto breaking his arm rather badly, Ogata too hadn’t made a single whimper when this had happened.

In this Ogata and Sugimoto are similar as Sugimoto too won’t flinch when hurt.

Anyway Ogata plans to escape because he knows he can’t win against Sugimoto the immortal, especially without weapons and with a broken arm and so, as Ogata is trying to run away Sugimoto… tosses his rifle at him. There’s to say Sugimoto is better at rifle tossing than at rifle shooting because he hits Ogata right in the head, causing him to fall down the slope, to hit his face hard enough he’ll broke his jaw and then to end up in a river… and I’m not even sure if Ogata remained conscious after he was hit by Sugimoto’s rifle as he didn’t really move as he fell.

But well, since he survived to it, he probably either was conscious or woke up fast enough.

Asirpa and Sugimoto watch the river, likely assuming Ogata couldn’t survive to the fall, but it’s interesting how Sugimoto’s figure is completely in the dark.

Sugimoto defends his actions, claiming that if Ogata had escaped, the rest of Ogata’s unit would have come after them so this was for the best. In short he’s claiming it’s a good thing Ogata supposedly died… even if, truth to be told, although he was about to murder him with the bayonet, I don’t think he planned to murder him when he tossed the rifle at him. That one had been purely an incident.

It’s interesting how Sugimoto is in the dark because the visual isn’t shying away from telling us that, although what Sugimoto is saying makes sense, what Sugimoto did is in no way good. Remember the whole talk about wenkamuy murdering and hell? Because that’s the subtle way Golden Kamuy has to tell us it hadn’t forgotten about it. Murdering is wrong, no matter the reason, and brings you to hell.

Sugimoto in the future will feel that, if he had killed Ogata back then, things would have been better. Things however could have been better also if he had managed to strike an allegiance with Ogata back then, as he’ll do with Tanigaki.

After all if Ogata had died, even if Sugimoto were to hid the body, for the mere fact Ogata would have gone missing the 7th would have come to search for him anyway, sooner or later forcing Sugimoto to deal with them. Really, I doubt there was a way out for Sugimoto at that point.

Also I wonder if Golden Kamuy also will face another discussion point.

Asirpa doesn’t want to kill people and she’s trying to desperately keep Sugimoto from doing the same… but, since she’s aiding him, she’s not completely blameless (and we’ll see here and there she’ll feel sorry for the ones who die). But well, only time will tell and I can’t really blame Asirpa as murders would probably happen even if she were to refuse to aid Sugimoto. Sugimoto wouldn’t have just given up on the gold as he’s desperate to help Umeko so it can’t really be helped. She’s in a harsh situation, really, where there’s no winning side.

Still, it’s really ironic how Ogata will, much, much later, return the favour and shoot Sugimoto in the head, leaving him for dead and causing him a head injury instead… with Asirpa witnessing both scenes.

I guess since they both attempted to kill the other they could consider each other ‘even’.

Back to the story Asirpa asks Sugimoto what his nickname ‘the immortal’ means. Instead than just telling her that it means he managed to survive to the harshest situations where people wouldn’t think he could, Sugimoto gives her a rather dark reply, its darkness emphasized also by how the visual shows his face is in the dark.

Sugimoto claims during the war he found out the trick to stay alive, which was not to let the others kill him. He doesn’t say out loud that this, to him, meant killing the others before they could kill him, but he defends himself by claiming he doesn’t enjoy killing however, if his life is on the line, he won’t hesitate to kill whoever Sugimoto will grow to believe he has to kill.

Sugimoto then goes on using Asirpa’s words to support his statement...

...reminding her how the strong survives and the weak perishes and how this is an universal truth and sort of normalizing the ‘law of the strongest’ as well as subtly implying he still feels he’s at war.

In the manga Asirpa doesn’t look at him, but she’s clearly troubled by his words.

In the anime instead Asirpa looks at him as he says so, and… well, we can’t see well her face so we can’t see if she’s troubled or just accepting.

I guess the anime is less invested in exploring Sugimoto’s dark side…

On a sidenote Asirpa takes really well the view of dead bodies and death in general.

Not only she didn’t flinch when seeing Gotō’d dead body but she just had a person murdered in front of her eyes (prisoner number 1) and another supposedly killed (Ogata) and she’s handling the whole thing in a really calm manner.

In the manga we see Asirpa and Sugimoto leaving the place to walk toward one of Asirpa’s hunting huts. Sugimoto asks Asirpa who taught her so much about hunting and she replies it was her father as she has no brothers. She also admits to prefer being out there hunting than at home knitting.

Sugimoto’s stomach starts grumbling, surprising him and Asirpa claims it’s proof he’s alive.

The anime skipped the previous bit, immediately jumping from Ogata’s supposed death to Sugimoto’s grumbling stomach… and yes, I can understand the bit that got cut wasn’t necessary but the whole thing made the experience a whole lot more casual.

I mean, we jump from Sugimoto supposedly causing someone’s death to Sugimoto being hungry. It really reduces the impact of what had happened. What’s more, the dialogue about Asirpa learning everything about hunting from her father is removed. Yes it isn’t really lost as it will be placed later on while they make citatap so it’s not so bad… but well, why moving it then? But maybe it’s just me.

Back to the manga Asirpa decides they’ll make Citatap (an Ainu dish) with the squirrels they captured.

Again we see Asirpa being completely casual as she skins and cuts the squirrels because this is everyday life to her, how she normally prepares her food. Asirpa kindly tells Sugimoto he can eat the squirrel’s brain. Raw.

Sugimoto’s reaction is… well, not enthusiastic as he’s definitely not used at this sort of things and I think a lot of Golden Kamuy readers unused to eat squirrel brain can empathize with him. Asirpa takes his reaction as him criticizing Ainu cuisine so Sugimoto feels sort of forced to eat it and doesn’t really sound sincere when, pressed by Asirpa, says it’s good.

We will see he’ll grow used to eat brains but he’s not at that point yet. I love character evolution though.

Interesting enough when she’ll offer woodcock brain to Ogata and Ushiyama she won’t force them to eat it. With Ushiyama she’ll just be sort of pleading instead than pressuring, with Ogata she’ll just let him not eat it when he’ll refuse… to Ushiyama and Sugimoto’s shock. Character evolution for Asirpa as well and, later, for Ogata too, as he too will start to eat brains.

In a way though, this contributes to define the relationships between characters.
