ANIMATION 102:

A SHORT STORY STOP-MOTION

My final piece of filming for Animation 102 was to create a short story animation using one of five prompts as inspiration;

Dental Pain

The irritating insect

The kitchen mishap

The mysterious package

The wilderness walk

I decided to base my animation on the mysterious package idea but incorporate some elements of the irritating insect. With an insect-like creature being revealed to be in the box.

With this, I wrote down a rough plan of the actions in my story as a reference for the animation.

I decided to make the creature in the box a slug, as the shape would be simple and easy to animate and because I could easily sculpt it in plasticine. To make the eye stalks, I used two sewing pins with pink tips. Cutting off the sharp ends with wire cutters.

I had nothing to use as the box that would contain the slug. So I looked around the classrooms at the campus for something feasible and finally came across a box of story dice.

I went into the stop motion studio and booked room 1 to film my story. While I worked on my animation, I took a timelapse on my phone to catalog the process.

Overall, this process took roughly seven hours.

One problem I ran into was after the production when exporting the video. When exported as a video, the lower half of the picture was cropped. Not only this, but the frames where my hand was in shot that I deleted were somehow still present. I tried several times to make different versions that didn't crop out the lower frame and did not contain my hands, but they didn't work.

The day after, I met up with the teacher in charge of the studio, Owen, to take a look and help me identify the problem. For one, the reason the hands were deleted on the file but not the video when I exported it was that I captured the HD photos on the camera, and these were a different library of photos from the ones I was using in the program. By clicking a diamond icon in the sidebar over the timeline, I could see these HD camera photos and finally take out the photos with my hands in them.

As for the cropped frame, I did not have the letterbox view on, so I couldn't see how the frame would be cropped to a 16 by 9 aspect ratio. To fix this, when in the exporting menu, I should turn the aspect ratio mask off. And if the menu says I can't export because of the pixel size, I'll just need to delete a single pixel or two.

With this, I went home, and edited my filmed short story on Premiere Pro, adding titles and music. I chose a piece of music that I would describe as relaxed jazzy lounge music because I felt it added a kind of comical yet classy element to the piece. I then added the Short Story to my showreel and uploaded the now complete showreel and the stand-alone short story to my Vimeo.

Overall, I'm glad I was able to achieve an entire animation with a more complex story than the test animations I had made previously, all in just seven hours. And I'm glad I got advice from Owen on the exporting issues. I feel the pointers he gave me will be helpful to me when I work with the DragonFrame program in the future.

Au where durring reality trip the trio runs into "Dani with and i" (since her premire eposode is techinecly before reality trip this is entirely possible) and she helps them defeat Freakshow.

Danny uses the gauntlet to make his parents think shes ACTUALLY their distant cousin thays been recwntly orphained so that they adopt her. Essentally making her a main cast member thru all of the season 3 storylines.

Jazz is aware of the realitytrip shanangans and is very conflicted about dannys choice to fuck withtheir memories, causing conflict. But shes also very pro dani.

This but they obsess over Spy Kids 4's 'villain' and then I can't do any uni work because Premire Pro makes my brain evaporate and the idea of spreading the D'amo gospel is too strong.

What if we hyperfixated together? 😗 JK JK… unless- 😏

when it cam to over all colour grading i didn't have a lot to do asid already made my footage a more cool tone by removing some of the red and i wanted it to look natural so i went in and slightly refined the contrast and brightness. for the black and white portion of my clip i used a LUT file in premire pro

After I exported all the frames from the Clip, I started to adjusted them and generated layers in occlusive relationships which decide the fallen leaves behind the objects or not in Adobe Animation.

Then I put them into the Adobe Premire Pro to link them together. I am a little annoyed of keep switching softwares, it’s nice that each software have their major functions separated from others but I still looking for a software that support daily, easy animation with more accurate positional and speed adjusting.

Oof, Krita.

I’ve done animations in the past with them, though nothing super in depth.

Honestly, in my experience you can get better results if you draw in Krita, save images, and then put it into an editing software. There’s stuff out there for free, like CapCut, though I haven’t used it much since my college had Premire Pro (the fancy expensive stuff).

That way you can even edit the sound: make it shorter, cut stuff. You can sync the image cuts to the waveform on the audio (easy way to sync sound and image), or transform the image (rotate, pan, zoom in and whatnot).

It should be easy to export your frames as images. Hope this helps, or at least doesn’t hinder you.

Sneak peak of a massive project I'm working on!

For those of you wondering where I've been or the relative radio silence from me, well, this is why. I'm pouring practically every spare moment I have into this thing, and right now my deadline is November 22nd.

Why November 22nd? Well, isn't it obvious? I'm working on an animatic starring my very favorite star-crossed lovers, Elphaba and Fiyero!

In a completely not-relevant-at-all-tangent, anyone here familiar at all with Krita? I've been uploading test videos to Youtube and the sound always cuts out at the last 4-ish seconds of the video. It plays just fine in Krita itself but when I upload to Youtube, those last few seconds of sound mysteriously vanish.

Well, I hope to figure it out. Stay tuned! So far, I'm super thrilled with my progress and how it's turning out! I hope you all enjoy it!

June 26th

Today was supposed to be a great day. It's the birthday of one of my favorite characters, Raiden Shogun. I decided I was going to post an edit I had made of her to tiktok. I open up my files. Onedrive stole that from me. Onedrive sent it to who knows where, and now it is no longer a usable file. On top of that, it stole so many of the clips used to make the video too, so when I went to make another version in Premire pro, it was basically nothing. The only reason I got that published was through a separate copy that I had made on accident, thank goodness, or my hours of hard work would be gone, just like that.

I and shaking, crying, furious, and when I get back home, I am going to delete onedrive, because now nothing, NOTHING, is safe on my computer.

The eighth project of my second course focused more on video editing and illustration.

The first task was to focus on a creating a 30 second lyric video with visuals for a song of our choice. I personally chose Monster by Skillet as I was able to think of more ideas for it.

I created the illustration work first but sketching the basic ideas then refining them digitally. I used Illustrator for the linework and Photoshop to apply the colour as well as some effects.

I then had to work with the typography as the 30 second lyric video needed them. I did this digitally in Photoshop and used two different fonts for specific areas to create more of an impact.

After creating the needed assets, I then edited the video together by using Premire Pro.

I think I edited the music slightly, its been a while.
