The realization hits Erwin harder than a Titan’s jaw snapping shut. That Levi came to this event for him. That Levi is dressed in his finest for him. They do, but I like to make it myself. Levi believed her without question, seeing the easy way she smiled as she measured out the oil and wax before melting them together. She had been methodical in inspecting the berries and petals before counting them out and adding them to the mortar. And her lipstick was always the most vibrant shade of red.

Heat saturates Manaket’s tight corridors. Even though they have been there for a month, having escaped the Order of the Rack’s underlings, Eleanora still hasn’t grown accustomed to the stick of the temperature on the back of her neck. She is four years old and growing precocious. The growing complexity of her vocabulary is suffused with hatred of the heat.
“Papa?”
She toddles along behind her father; his hand around hers the only thing keeping them connected. A grunt is the only response she gets. Eleanora pouts and starts dragging her feet. Sand kicks up with each of her stomps. When he ignores that as well, she starts applying her weight to their arms.
“What,” Her father barks. He stops to look down at her.
“I’m hungry!”
Father rolls his eyes, shaking his head with annoyance. Then he reaches into his jacket pocket. Out comes a wrapped package of comfits. He holds it out to her with his free hand. Eleanora looks at it then back up at him. Her stomach rumbles loudly. A moment passes and then a grimace wrinkles his face.
“No.”
“Papa! Please! I’m hungry!”
“If we do this, we might have to leave, Little Bat. Do you want that, Ellie?”
She stares at him, not understanding.
“Don’t you want to stay here? Get a nice home?”
The rumble in her stomach burns. Eleanora stomps her feet again. A high pitched whine belts out of her.
“NoooOOOooooOoo!”
Her father runs a hand over his face. Letting go of her, he leans down and picks her up around the waist, bringing her up so that they look at each other face-to-face. She squirms, trying to avoid his gaze. Her father grips her face by the chin, pulling her to look at him. Another whimper. His brown eyes stare at her as if he is looking for something in her face. Then he taps the tip of her nose with a finger and smiles. Sensing that she has passed some sort of test, Eleanora returns his smile.
“Alright, Little Bat. You win. You must be a good girl and I will get you something to eat. Can you behave?”
“Yes, Papa!”
Setting her back down, he tells her to follow him and heads toward the markets that throng the Occularium. Slowly withering plants droop in their planters off the sides of the buildings. Colorful fabrics cover the market stalls, protecting the people below from the sun. Other children scamper between the adults and the stalls. Eleanora wonders what it would be like to be able to play with them. Do the children of Manaket play hopscotch? She can’t remember the last time Father allowed her to play.
After a while she realizes they have been stalking someone. Her father’s eyes have been following an elf at the market. The elf stops at a stall, pulling a coin purse out of their cloak to barter with. With an arm keeping her behind him, her father angles them to look like they too, are inspecting goods for sale. Eleanora looks at the baubles on the table. Beaded bracelets, hair clips, rings and other such sundries. Her fingers sneak to hover over them and the salesman slaps her hand away. In response, she blows a raspberry and huddles closer to her father.
“Stay here, Ellie,” her father commands and skulks off.
She politely smiles at the shopkeeper who returns a scowl. Two children run up to the table. They grab hair clips and giggle to each other about which would look best in their hair. Eleanora stares at them intently. She has very little understanding of the local language, but the smiles and laughs tell her all she needs to know. A knot of loneliness wells up in her chest. She stands there awkwardly next to them with her hands pulled up to her chest. The other children don’t even register her presence.
A sharp birdcall rings throughout the marketplace. Listening carefully, she notes the witchetty-witchetty of the common yellowthroat. The sign her father told her to remember! Moving away from the stall, she slowly heads toward where she thinks she heard the sound. The birdcall continues as she passes through the crowds of people. As she nears a series of side streets, it grows louder and louder. Trusting her instincts, she picked a side street and went down it.
The alleyway was empty except for boxes and closed doors. Sheets were draped over the tops of the buildings casting colourful shadows downwards. Her father’s signal surely came from somewhere back here. She stepped carefully, waiting for any further sign. The place scared her and she chewed nervously on the thread of her sleeve. As she went to place her foot down, a dark shape scurred past. A rat! The creature was as large as a house cat and much more shocking. Eleanora scrunches her face up in the beginnings of a scream, but a hand flies out from behind her and covers her mouth.
“Your dinner is closeby, Little Bat. You have to be brave,” whispers her father’s voice.
“Papa?”
“Follow me.”
Heart beating in her ears, Eleanora follows her father down the alley. Eventually they come to a musty corner where the elf they had seen in the marketplace was hauling a small handcart full of weapons. Her eyes widen at the sight of the swords and axes. Despite her years, she could tell they were not toys. Crouching over, Father slowly approaches the elf with his arms open wide. Her father throws his arm around the elf’s head, gripping their mouth much as he had hers. He throws his other arm around their neck and shoulders, bringing his torso broad against their back. Then he pulls them away from the cart and towards the wall of one of the buildings. The cart clatters to the ground with a loud clang bringing a wide-eyed look of panic to her father’s face. The elf struggles violently and she sees the muscles of her father’s arms bulging with the effort of keeping their victim confined. He brings himself against the wall and slowly pushes the elf onto their knees, leaning down with them to keep himself in control. Finally the two men are at a height she can manage.
“Eleanora: NOW!”
The usage of her full name tears her out of her staring and she lunges forward obediently. She brings her mouth to a bare part of the elf’s neck. Her fangs positively tingle at the excitement of getting what has been tempting her for weeks. With a glance up, she sees her father nod his approval. Then she sinks her fangs into the elf’s neck. Blood immediately fills her mouth. It tastes as strong and rich as any chocolate. More satisfying than the ripest, juiciest fruit in the middle of the harvesting season. With every drink, she can feel herself growing stronger… more vibrant. It is as if she can feel her hair draining the sun of its yellows to fill out her blonde curls. As if she can feel her muscles filling out with strength or her bones hardening against any dangers. This was better than any treat the kids in the market could possibly buy.
As she feeds visions from the elf’s life fills her mind. Infancy and the blurry image of a parent cooing over them. Childhood bullies, chasing with sticks and hurting with cruel words. The elf as a young man, arguing with another person about something called the “Master of Scrolls”. Suddenly a ceremony. Friends calling his name. Pride mixed with anxiety and a shiny object akin to a compass being pressed into his hands. Then dirt and unending desert expanses. The elf surrounded by archeologists and others of his profession. All blistering in the hot sun. All growing more violently tired of the mystery they are trying to solve. Then finally strong hands on his skin and the wide brown eyes of a little girl. The fear and confusion at what is happening to him and what could possibly be wrong with the child coming towards him with mouth agape. All this and more flashes through her mind as she drinks the life away from him. Eventually she feels his death come like a great spasm. Then he stills and grows cold. Eleanora releases him and stumbles away, looking up for her father’s comfort.
“Did you get enough,” her father asks as he lowers the body to the ground. His voice is quiet and reserved.
“Yes, Papa. Thank you, Papa.”
“Good. Let me check his pockets and we can be away.”
He leans down and starts rifling through the elf’s clothing. Out comes a coin purse that her father attaches to his own belt. Then he discards some knick knacks that won’t put dinner on the table such as a tattered map and a religious charm. Two final items bring her father to pause. The first is a compass much like the one she saw in her vision. Now it is worn and scuffed instead of the shiny metal it had been. The second is a pendant on a cord. She watches her father turn the stone around and run his finger over the engraving on the front.
“The glyph of the Open Road…,” he mutters. “This fellow was a Pathfinder.”
“Papa?”
“Nothing to worry about, Little Bat. Just thinking out loud.”
Finally her Father drags the hand cart over and leaves it overtop the elf’s body. He drops the compass and pendant onto the pile. Ripping a part of the elf’s sleeve, he takes the fabric and dabs at the blood trickling from Eleanora’s mouth. The child looks up at him blankly as he does so. He throws the rag away and takes her hand, leading her through the alleys as far as they can get from the body.
The sounds of the market slowly hums into a roar as they get nearer. Her father suddenly stops in his tracks, body shaking. She looks up at him to find his face is a grimace, teeth clenched and tears running down his cheeks. Letting go of her hand, he stumbles to the side and hits the wall with his shoulder. The tears start running even more freely. His sob is deafened by the crowds. Body wracked by grief, her father falls to his knees, arms wrapped around himself. His shoulders shake with his sobs.
“Papa?”
Eleanora comes to his side and puts a tiny hand on his shoulder. His eyes are rimmed red when he turns to look at her. They simply gaze at each other for a moment before her father throws his arms around her and pulls her into a hug. She leans her head against his chest and listens to the swift beating of his human heart.
“Oh, Little Bat… this is so hard…”
“I’ll be good, Papa…”
A laugh and then he shakes his head.
“No, no. It’s okay, Ellie. We’ll just have to find somewhere new to go. I know you can’t help it,” he says as he releases her and stands, wiping the tears away with the back of a hand.
“I love you, Papa.”
“I love you too, Little Bat. I really do. Papa will always protect you.”
