Have I mentioned lately that creating AUs is the most fun thing ever? You get to take a story you love and then mash it against another type of story you love and fit all their pieces together like they're a jigsaw puzzle. You get to find all the unexpected points of similarity where the stories fit together really well, and see the places where their differences change and make commentary on the original stories/genres in really interesting ways.
And then once you fit the pieces together, you get to look at the new world you've made and see how these characters in this specific world have different conflicts and explore new themes, and you get to play with another level of puzzles as you figure out what this means for this story.
It's the most fun ever. It's my favorite game.
#random thought of the day#adventures in writing#this goes for both fairy tale retellings and for aus of specific shows/novels#this last week was a week for aus#between the north and south sci fi au coming up again#making up a northanger abbey fantasy au#coming up with a new angle for retelling maid maleen#and having tons of new insight in how to rework a story that's a retelling of cinderella and three different austen novels#plus looking back on the powers and prejudice au#this is just such a great game#the moment when the pieces click into place in a way that makes both elements make sense#there's nothing quite as satisfying#to some extent this applies to plotting original fiction#but it's a different feeling when you're making an au of something#because you don't just get to work with malleable clay#you have specific pre-formed pieces#so you get the challenge of figuring out how to fit them together without damaging either one too much#and when you find the way they fit together it makes you appreciate both stories in a new way#plus it makes you feel clever for making the connection#astounding superb wondrous past time

If I was in charge of casting voice actors to Mouthwashing, I would play around with how the game make the player believe that Curly is the one who crashed the ship by casting an actor know for constantly playing villains as him, while Jimmy would be cast with an actor who constantly play heroes.
While I think this is interesting I think a point of the game is that Curly looks and acts like a guy who you couldn’t imagine doing what he did initially.
You get the glimpse of him in the past and while it does give some reasons why he might of done it, you can tell he still wouldn’t. Inversely, while we chalk Jimmy’s behavior and its deterioration on the stress of the situation we learn he’s always been kinda “unpleasant”. I think having like actors that portray that would make sense as it’s the whole joke and deconstruction of the “untwist”. We begin to mistrust Jimmy but we don’t have proof he crashed the ship until near the end.
If anything I think it’s stands more to cast Curly with a typical hero and Jimmy as just some guy. A big part of Jimmy’s character is that he’s supposed to be completely average and sorta plain in comparison to everyone but especially Curly. Despite what people want to say he is designed to look average; a 5/10 mediocre and that’s his biggest issue rather than being a complete failure. He’s just moving along another part of the formation. His job a bit overshadowed even as he’s not even the main pilot. Casting an actor who plays those Everyman common roles only to turn out the reason everything is so bad fits with the theme rather than the typical good guy playing bad role and vice versa.
I think having a typical hero actor for Curly is also very important for the reason he’s incapacitated. These actors are the biggest billed, a reason people go to see the movie so having him basically be cut out of the picture and it forced to follow some joe shmoe is pretty on par for the game. If anything casting Swansea as a typical villain makes more sense as the game winds him up to be more unstable or violent when it’s just not the case, the same with the idea of casting an actress that place ditzy roles for Anya only for us to see how competent she actually is. Not to drag it on but even Daisuke as an actor in mostly silly roles only to be tragic.
I think the casting should play with the idea these are the characters under the lens of a person who fundamentally does not understand them and sees their most annoying aspects to himself vs anything else. Curly is the typically hero to him, Anya some dumb nurse chick, Swansea an untrustworthy grouch and Daisuke some kid. It’s a nice subversion to have them played by those types but not fit the role at all.
#because I can only assume we also have Curly’s parts where we’d clearly see he’s not malicious at all#like the game never makes you try to distrust curly more so realize we put too much faith and trust#into Jimmy without thinking or giving excuses because we had no idea what he’d done until much later when it was too late#basically the viewers/players perception is supposed to have been the same as Curly’s regarding the pre crash events#but I think it breaks something by making Jimmy look heroic cause the point is he never is and that there are overt and subtle signs from#the beginning but it’s easy to overlook not because he doesn’t fit any of the bills but because he’s just under the radar#he’s average mundane normal enough and having a normalish guy turn out to be a monster#is so much more compelling because even then he is not like a hammy mastermind unrepentant villain#he’s a coward that refuses to acknowledge the consequences cause he can’t comprehend the guilt#so I think everyone should be played by the parts they portray as the story twists and untwists the roles already#mouthwashing#mouthwashing game#ask#anon

high chaos/low chaos/join the chaos in my dishonored 2 rewrite
#dishonored#dishonored 2#emily kaldwin#billie lurk#dishonored 2 spoilers#dishonored spoilers#dishonored fanfic#the monster in the hull#yeah yeah yeah the duke was responsible for this but also like. why did emily let someone that incompetent run the show so long#re: the stunt double solution. when i frame it like this it makes emily seem careless#she was and that's the point! but also to me it's#exhibit A for: 'we had a cool game mechanic idea so we forced the story to fit around it'#it is extremely cool to have a body double involved in an assassination (bet they considered twins at some point)#but her solution defs doesnt make emily look good. which again. its a AAA game they dont expect ppl to think bout it#the pain of being a Narrative Enjoyer in a Videogames Need Gimmicks world#so i addressed this even if just a little in the fic. didn't want to derail majorly it's slowburn enough already.#stop! stop! it's already slow burn!! etc etc. haaaaa#yeah it's 100k at this point. added some scenes probably splitting final chapter into 2#because like arkane i too cannot resist a gimmick *sighs and fist bumps a corporate entity*#pres writes essays in tags

ok i do need to ask, do we like KNOW know that some egg admins have been playing as other silly npcs during this downtime or are we speculating. like i've seen people identifying admins with varying strength of basis since the eggs first existed but like. for a while there anytime an npc spoke portuguese everyone thought it was richas and then occasionally it would be agent 18 lmao so. . . are we doing that now or do we like Know lmfao
oh and to be clear i do mean varying strength; people were apparently spotting a leo admin's speech patterns earlier and since leo has such a distinct pattern (tho i'm not fluent in spanish LMAO) i'm inclined to believe that. but yea for a while people seemed to think portuguese=richas and to be fair there weren't many non-english npcs for a WHILE and really no portuguese besides richas (that we knew of) but it does mean i'm a bit more skeptical now when the audience starts trying to clock npc admins lmfao
#qsmp#this is not neg this is just me not being on y'all's same wavelength for the millionth time#sometimes i feel like i'm not cut out to be in a minecraft fandom lmfao#which is wild bc i started my fandom journey as one. maybe that's why lmao mcyt fan spaces are way different than 2012#anyway i'm apparently super bad with minecraft admin body language bc i never spot it#philza minecraft spotting his kids were Imposters from a mile away blew my fucking mind#bonus shoutout to etoiles who clocked dapper as a code fighting him#and who also had to clock his imposter daughter lol rip the legend#shut up vic#block game brainrot#oh and when phil clocked that bobby was filling in for tallulah tho that one was kinda obvious (lag)#i'm pretty sure fit has also clocked an admin filling in for ramon but i don't remember when or who#definitely pre-purgatory though#ah and when the eggs were missing and pierre clocked pomme and then used her ninho pearl lmao#while she was snipybara#that time roier laid on the ground and played sad music when a different admin filled in for bobby#and ofc cellbit noticing elisangela(iirc) was richas and teasing them#me when the parents can spot their kids a mile away: 🥰

If you think about it rapture would've made a sick DLC environment for a Fallout game
#fanfic idea boys#not art#fallout#bioshock#idk maybe it was another one of vault tec's expirements that they decided to blow an exorbitant amount of money on#im pretty sure fallout 4 was meant to have an underwater vault that was cut#and andrew ryan would fit sooooo well into fallout's themes#also maybe i just like rapture's environment. tis pretty.#underwater ghouls as an aside is a pretty sick idea. pre war ghouls with coral and barnacles and shit growing from them#all living on the sea floor#they can't leave or else the pressure change will fuck them up#hmhmmm#i wish there was more ocean stuff in fallout games. fallout 4 did good but i wish it did more yknow

Granthem Du'met smacking Frank Stone with a broom
Du'met's out here in his apron and attention to loose threads and general neatness, no way would he stand for this thing in his home
grimy creatures are disallowed in the murder castle
#the devil in me#the dark pictures anthology#the dark pictures the devil in me#the casting of frank stone#Granthem Du'met#frank stone#supermassive games#Pre release I was waiting to see if FS would fit with the various other murderers and evil characters I like#Because I do enjoy smg's villains. As anyone who knows me knows#But I just don't vibe with FS as a human or a monster#And I like all the other smg monsters. I love at least three previous smg serial killer characters as well#But I just feel like he was giving me nothing#And so my boy Hector needs to hit him with a broom#I don't know wether that mental image is funnier as a human or monster tho lol#Of course no disrespect to those that do enjoy his character. It's just surprisingly not me this time#Love Augustine tho

I know you're not fond of Twilight Princess, but what would you think if they brought back worldbuilding elements from it (the Twilight world and Midna, mainly) to a newer game? I'm not familiar enough with the series to know a whole lot, but that stuff at least seems really neat to me from my secondhand knowledge, but if Twilight Princess was as bad as you say... I would love to see them revisit it somehow with the BotW/TotK continuity.
i have this. thing about twilight princess. we know this. but genuinely even looking at the lore from an objective standpoint i think trying to pull any of it into other games is a bad decision at best and actively detrimental to the new game in question at worst. there are two main reasons for this:
the first is that mainline, non-sequel zelda games have a general rule about standing alone. in order for the games to remain accessible to players of all ages and backgrounds, every original (non-sequel) zelda title has to be able to function as an introduction to the franchise, meaning any lore required to understand the story must be exposited WITHIN the story of that game. the few lore-points that HAVE been adapted from other games (sacred realm, oot ganondorf, talking sword) are generic enough that they can be explained briefly within the story without taking too much time away from the player's journey. while those of us who ARE versed in the lore might have a deeper understanding of the overarching implications of these elements, NOT understanding the history behind them isn't going to impede your understanding or enjoyment of the game. for example, this is likely the practical reason why fi was never named or appeared in botw beyond her generic sound effect and the glowing of the sword, because even players who don't KNOW fi are able to tell from context that the sword is magical and is speaking. not knowing who fi is doesn't impede your ability to understand how and why the sword is speaking, given the rest of the context of botw's story. the two elements of tp that you mentioned, the twilight realm and midna, are VERY difficult from a writer's standpoint to work into a game without requiring the player to understand the plot of twilight princess. neither element easily fits into a new cycle's story without requiring a ton of expositional explanation which will inevitably take players out of the story, and relying on convoluted lore that new players won't even be familiar with to drive your story just sets you up for failure.
the second reason is that, from a writer's standpoint, neither midna nor the twilight realm were well-written enough in TP to be compelling. lmao. If you're going to adapt world-altering lore like the twilight realm into consistent canon, you need to have a firm grasp on the implications of adapting it. even the writers of TP had no fucking clue what the twilight realm was or where it came from or how it tied into the existing world of hyrule at all. literally the first sentence on the zelda wiki for twilight realm history is "The Twilight Realm's full history is incomplete." adding something like a new dimension to your consistent canon is world-altering. when you do something like that, it HAS to be thought-out and for good reason, or you're just confusing your audience unnecessarily. IF the twilight realm was to be brought back, it would HAVE to be with explicit knowledge of of how it effects the narrative and theming of the story its being written into, something that wasn't even present in the game where it was introduced. the same goes for midna; if you bring her back, she needs a reason to be there. she needs narrative weight and thematic consistency with the entire rest of the game, things that were barely present in her original story. ripping these elements out of their own game and tossing them into another only makes them more likely to feel out-of-place and confusing to players. And to be completely honest, almost anything that writers wanted to accomplish with the twilight realm could be done just as easily utilizing the sacred realm, an element which is already in consistent canon and is much easier to write into a given story than something as mysterious and confusing as the twilight realm. with midna, almost anything that she would accomplish could be accomplished by a game-specific guide character, which is already staple of loz anyway. using a game-specific guide character would also remove any potential confusion for new players who lack the context of midna's past appearances. the only reason you might NEED midna as a character is if you ALSO have the twilight realm and specifically require a twili guide character to explain it, but. for all the reasons stated above. you shouldn't have the twilight realm. lol
#tp critical#like. i know we all love the overarching lore and are obsessed with consistent canon and game callbacks#but if the game can't stand on its own it cant stand period. consistent canon is less important than a legible standalone game#ive said this before but i NEED you guys to remember that up until skyward sword there WAS no consistent canon.#for almost 25 years the zelda devs were making standalone games tied together by a few consistent elements of gameplay#and then AFTER they made 25 years worth of games they sat down and connected them all.#thinking about how the game fits into the overarching lore isn't usually a priority for these devs. and i don't really think it SHOULD be#their priority is telling a good story and giving players a good gameplay experience.#where it fits into the overarching lore can be figured out after the fact the same way it was for every game pre sksw.#pulling WHOLE GAME-SPECIFIC CHARACTERS AND SETTINGS into a new game makes little to no sense. that's not really what the games are about#anyway. rant over
