The Witcher IV, the start of a brand-new The Witcher saga, is currently in development. Platforms and a release date were not announced.

“We’re kicking off a brand-new Witcher saga, this time with Ciri as the heart of the story!” said Sebastian Kalemba, Game Director. “It feels so good to finally be able to say those words—for the longest time we knew that we wanted Ciri to be the protagonist of The Witcher IV; it just felt natural to us and we believe that Ciri deserves it. During this year’s The Game Awards, CD PROJEKT RED offered a first look at The Witcher IV, previously known by its codename Polaris. The game, a successor to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—considered one of the most acclaimed games of all time—marks the beginning of a new Witcher saga with Ciri stepping into the role of the protagonist. In the nearly six-minute trailer, viewers were introduced to Ciri, the adopted daughter of Geralt of Rivia, as she takes on a witcher contract in a remote village that has been terrorized for generations by a fearsome monster demanding human sacrifices. Framed as a short, self-contained Witcher story, the trailer showcases Ciri’s new abilities and tools, including a chain and advanced magic powers. At the heart of the trailer is Ciri’s perspective as an outsider to the village. As the villagers say goodbye to one of their own — a young girl they are preparing for a traditional ritual sacrifice—Ciri chooses to intervene. Aiming to slay the beast and save the girl at the same time, Ciri finds herself at odds with the prejudices and superstitions of the people she tries to protect, leading her to confront a painful witcher lesson: that monsters come in all forms. The trailer is pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5 on an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU. Powered by the same tech that The Witcher IV is built on, using assets and models from the game itself, it aims to provide players with a cinematic look at the kind of experience the game is aspiring to provide. in doing my research for exactly where/ if it would say in the canon that no girls would survive the trials, I found that a lot of the lore around the origin of Witchers and the other Witcher schools is not from the games or books but from the TTRPGs, both the one from Poland in 2001 and the new one that CDPR made

now I have to take the wikis word for it since I don't own any of the TTRPG books and I do not speak Polish, do you have any more insight into this?

As far as I can remember, the idea that a girl would not survive the trials is never stated in the books.

What is stated in the books is:

The chances of survival for boys given the mutations is three to four out of ten (30–40%). This is considered barbaric by essentially every single character that we’ve seen comment on it. Geralt and the witchers around his age are the last witchers to be produced in Kaer Morhen. // Source: Something More Part IV, Crossroads of Ravens Ch. 12

Geralt and the witchers invite Triss as a sorceress to Kaer Morhen, but not because they want her to figure out the spells, reverse-engineer the stale decoctions, and give Ciri the mutations—rather, because Ciri is—unknown to them—a Source, and has been doing crazy magic shit like giving trance prophecy, and scaring the utter crap out of them. // Source: Blood of Elves, Ch. 2

Triss speculates that Ciri might resent the witchers, should she continue to be given hormones (the mushrooms she eats at dinner), because she would thus grow up to have more masculine features, rather than feminine ones — similar to giving a female child puberty blockers or testosterone. This is also when Triss shames the witchers for training Ciri like a boy, like any other child witcher, because none of them have any problem with it and have considered it a positive thing—until Triss points out Ciri had her period, and none of them knew. The witchers then agree to stop giving her the mushrooms, become more sensitive to her biological sex, which they had previously ignored. So, like with everything in Witcher and in life, it’s not a yes-or-no question. Ciri’s biological sex distinguishes her a bit because there are things about cis women’s bodies which her male guardians are ignorant to, but, as Geralt said, “… and her gender? I would also like to add that pre-pubescent children divided by biological sex are not very dissimilar in strength and physical endurance, anyways. It’s puberty which begins to give men more muscle and women more fat. Or—sorry—their “womanly attributes.” // Source: Lived through puberty.

I see why the witchers were giving Ciri those hormone mushrooms, then, because they would give her more strength and energy to endure the rigorous training, but also essentiallly influence her puberty to be a male one; however, unbeknownst to them, she was already going through her own puberty, it had already hit her. So they went, “whoops, our bad,” and stopped.

There are also female witchers in the TTRPG and in the Hexer, where there is a school of female witchers. But these are not “canon” to the books or games continuum.

In spite of this, she maintains a level of sophistication about her; like the surface of water untouched, she continues to walk besides him, eyes forcefully pried from the witcher, if only to further incite him.

 ❝Mmm...❞ a slow shrug of one delicate shoulder as she pretends to consider the question, the black silks of her skirts flowing as she abruptly unfastens the obsidian brooch pinned to her velvet cloak, pulling it off her shoulders and spreading it over the grass under a willow so that they might sit together for a while.  ❝You've somehow proven yourself to be rather passably tolerable, I surmise... ❞ a jest at his expense, but then, a soft one. Yennefer moves to sit on her cloak with her back pressed against the tree, says, laughter in her voice,  ❝although I do enjoy your face... So stoic and brooding... I like a man with secrets in his eyes.❞ there’s a stirring of a smirk at the corners of her mouth, innuendo lacing with every syllable purposefully as she demandingly pats the space next to her upon the cloak, plainly inviting the witcher to join her so that they might watch the bonfires burn together.

2. And Then There Were Three (26,290 words; domestic fluff)-Tissaia and Yennefer are happily married, and want a child to complete their family. The process won't be easy, but they have each other and their ride or die friend group. Some fluff, some angst, and shenanigans arise on their journey.

3. Self Control (1,149 words; fluff and smut)- Dr. Tissaia de Vries has legendary self control. Unless Yennefer of Vengerberg is in the room.

4. Come to my Office, Please (3,123 words; Eventual smut)-A private message gets sent to the entire group and puts a series of events into action.

5. Stars Fell on Aretuza (1,210 words; hurt/comfort)-It's the first Ascension Ball since the Thanedd Coup, and the first in decades not coordinated by Tissaia de Vries.

6. You Mistake the Stars (31,647 words; whump)- Yennefer saw Vilgefortz as a way to get off of the pig farm, but ended up in a worse situation. When she casts an errant portal and ends up on the Isle of Thanedd, she meets a cast of characters that will change her life.

7. Such a Good Turkey (2,606 words, crack fic)- It's close to Thanksiving on The Continent and no one has any chill.

8. I Might Love You More than Coffee (46,484 words; fluff)- Yennefer is intrigued by a mysterious new regular at her coffee shop, The Lodge. I'm no barista, so I'm relying on my extensive coffee consumption experience for the details on this one.

9. Le Tits Now! (3,939 words; crack fic)-It's the holiday season and everyone is in various states of festiveness. Shenanigans to follow...

10. And I Swear My Breath Turned Silver the Day Your Hair Did (4,942 words; angst with a happy ending)-I've never really written a real fix it for the Thanedd Coup before. I pretty much just ignore it by writing modern AUs or insinuate that everything turned out ok.

This is a somewhat canon compliant (until it's not) fix it for the Thanedd Coup fall out. I've had it in progress for a while and seem to be having trouble working on my other fic until this one is done.

11. What’s Lost is not Lost…Keep Looking! (1,380 words; crack fic)-Ciri's beloved stuffy is missing. Tissaia and Yen are ready to go all Liam Neeson from Taken, but the answer may be closer than they think.

12. Now the Air I Tasted and Breathed (Has Taken a Turn) (WIP; angst with a happy ending)-Ok, so....remember the musical episode of Grey's Anatomy (Song beneath the song)? Um...this is the Witcher version of that. Kind of, though (in my imagination) the characters aren't singing, it's just a montage of scenes with the song playing. If you aren't familiar with Black by Pearl Jam, listening is a good pre-reading activity. :)

13. How did we get THIS way? (3,933 words; crack treated seriously) - An alternate version of Rinde if Tissaia had shown up a bit later. OR...Tissaia de Vries accidentally crashes an orgy.

14. Nothing Sweeter Than a Bitter Cup of Coffee (13,681 words; light angst and crack)-More coffee shop shenanigans ensue when Rita shares some news with Tissaia.

15. More Indelible than Ink (WIP, fluff)- Tissaia is the proprietor of deVries Ink and Paper Shop and leads a very quiet, normal life...that is until a stunning raven-haired tattoo artist walks into her store.

Sabrina/Triss centric

1. The Kids are Alright (5,399 words; mutual pining)-Sabrina breaks her arm badly teaching novices non-magical self defense. Rita and Triss help her and Triss uses her chaos. The healer becomes the patient and Rita is sick of their shit.

2. Downtime (1,034 words, PWP?)- Sabrina's office has a network downtime and she needs something (or someone) to do.

3. What We Lost at Sodden (8,858 words; hurt/comfort)- This is another Sodden Hill story with a focus on Sabrina and Rita's experiences. I feel like Sabrina was too OK, too soon after Sodden, and I would love to have seen more of Rita's experience being charged with holding down the fort, knowing her friends were fighting for, and losing their lives.

4. The Things I Regret (2,036 words; hurt/comfort)- Written on the the one year anniversary of my mom's death. We had a very complicated relationship and I've been surprised at how I've felt since she died, vs. how I thought I would feel. I also had lunch recently with a friend who has gone no-contact with her mother due to her refusal to acknowledge her childhood trauma. These human experiences are always so interesting to me...if a bit painful. So, why not write about it? 😁

So, once again poor Sabrina gets to be a stand in for therapy. I mainly chose her because of her conduit moment, we know she has some issues there. 😁

5. Put Out the Fire in Your Head and Lay With Me Tonight (2,226 words; fluff and smut)-Sabrina is exhausted and stressed. Triss helps her relax. This is all fluff with a little bit of smut and nearly no plot. Just like I like to write. 😈😍

6. Burnout (10,501 words; hurt/comfort)-Sabrina is burnt out and coping as only Sabrina can, which is to say, not at all.

7. Aretuza (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) (1,465 words; tooth rotting fluff)- This is a snapshot of an Aretuza where they all live happily ever after, even if the novices are a bit ...incapable.

8. The world was on fire (and no one could save me but you) (22,760 words; angst with a happy ending)-IMO, this is the angstiest thing I've written, so be warned. None of the major characters die (I could never) but there is some death.

9. The 14th on the Hill (8,985 words; angst with a happy ending)-Another spin on Sodden, but this one pulls from book lore as well as Netflix lore and HCs.

Group shenanigans

1. Icks (1,116 words; crack fic)-Tissaia learns a new term. Everyone shares an ick in their relationship.

2. Triss’s Greenhouse (429 words; crack fic) -Tissaia needs to relax and Triss has something for that.

3. Beige Flags (770 words; crack fic)-Tissaia is slowly learning tik tok. She needs an explanation of beige flags.

4. Another Fic Where Triss is Stoned, but with Pokemon (965 words; crack fic)- This is a crack fic, but based on a real life conversation. No need to take this seriously. :) This is based on a video game called pal world That is essentially a rip off of pokémon... And they have guns.

5. Hanging Around (5,593 words, crack treated seriously)- Ok. I was inadvertently sent on a side quest to tell an important, and very serious story. It is based on the delightful video below which gave me several much needed laughs. This is set in the AUMC universe where Tissaia is a pathologist, Yennefer and Rita work in the hospitals PR department, Triss is a nurse and married to Sabrina, who manages the lab. The slides in question are stained blood and bone marrow which are used to microscopically diagnose blood disorders, such as leukemia. I think that is all the pre-reading needed.🤭

6. After Sodden (29,044 words; modern AU; slow burn?)- Ciri is an environmental activist, but accidentally commits a bit of eco-terrorism. She's now a fugitive and turns to Yennefer for help.This was inspired by a Tumblr prompt...I have taken a LOT of creative liberties here. (Read: I don't follow instructions well).

Wheel of Time

the geralt/eddie parallels haunt my every waking thought

if it wasnt 5 am and i was on my laptop i would type a novel on how geralts self hate regarding the trials, becoming a witcher and his inhumanness and eddies internalized homophobia, being raised catholic with heteronormative familial dynamics, and military trauma parallel so hard....

plus the presence of their children - ciri/chris - and how their dynamics with their fathers act as both objects assisting in geralt/eddie's self acceptance? healing?, and also obstacles in due to how the fathers project those pre-healed traumatic mindsets on them

and i would get into their dynamics with their male besties and how in accepting their love for them they have to combat those unhealthy lines of thinking head on. accepting that geralt isnt an unfeeling monster undeserving or unneeding of love, and eddie is attracted to men and has had a healthy co-parenting dynamic with someone who wasnt a woman. (jaskier-buck parallels is a whole other can of worms)

then dont even get me started on their relationships with women - starting back with geralts feeling of abandonment by his mother and eddie's emotional feeling of abandonment (and later literal abandonment) by shannon (in addition to the implication of his emotionally neglectful mother). and the betrayal the women in their life have committed against their kids - yennefer w ciri, shannon w chris

ok, marinated quite a bit in my brain. i am happy about the news but i also have to take up my biggest problem with the presented concept.

let me pre-face this with an important point, so as to not cause any misconstruction; i want ciri to be the protagonist. i love it. but i do not want her to have undergone the trial of the grasses, i pray that they will take that back.

ciri is already incredibly special. she doesn’t need to be a mutant. i just feel like this sudden transformation undermines who she is, her coming to terms with her powers, along with slowly learning to master them. it throws all that to the side despite her abilities being far beyond the powers of a witcher. she’s extraordinary.

remember ciri even said in w3; ”what can you know about saving the world, silly? you’re but a witcher.”

cdpr probably feels that they have to get a new mutant protagonist for the series. they also wanted ciri, though. instead of letting ciri be an honorary witcher, hunting monsters in perhaps a totally new way, they felt they had to keep their branding and try to not upset the geralt fans too much. so, potions once more, signs & two swords along with a cat eyed witcher.

people may mention that cdpr already diverged far from canon before this in the other games (which is extremely true) but that doesn’t mean we should close our eyes to their choices when we’re presented with a cool cinematic. that doesn't mean we can't discuss!

that is also not to say people can’t be happy and celebrate; as said, i am excited too. i am merely very critical of this choice as i feel that it is not fair to ciri. rather than feeling like something ciri would choose or an interesting plot development that the devs thought would be cool, it seems like an attempt to keep their brand and try to please parts of the audience while changing the protagonist.

tldr; cdpr should not have had ciri undergo the trial of the grasses. it undermines her and her already existing powers, it makes no sense why she would feel the need to, and thirdly, it oozes of cdpr just trying to uphold the brand…making it feel very corporate.

new yennskier fic! pre/post thanedd missing scenes. some kind of disaster - chapter 1 yennefer/jaskier ~7k. Missing scene, flashback. Banter, hurt/comfort, angst and pining, more tags on ao3. That storehouse looked like it probably had food, but he'd watched Ciri and Geralt on the ferry. She really loved spending time with Geralt. He clearly was enjoying spending time with her. Jaskier loved that for them.

"You two go and have some last minute father-daughter time. I'll stay here and supervise Yennefer to make sure she gets this shield in tip-top shape," Jaskier said brightly. Yennefer rolled her eyes at him, but she gave Geralt a Meaningful Stare that Jaskier found interesting. Not lust, not quite yearning, but maybe trust? Maybe they really had worked some of their shit out. Jaskier filed that detail away for later.

"I would like to put in an order for turtle soup and maybe some roasted wild boar while you're out there." Jaskier said to Ciri, earning him a laugh.

"Rabbit stew it is," Geralt said.

Jaskier tipped his head back in exasperation and Ciri gave him a companionable shoulder-bump before bounding off with Geralt. "At least keep your noses open for any wild truffles!"

"There aren't any truffles on the island," Yenenfer said.

"Why must you dash my hopes and dreams of extravagant morsels?" Jaskier sighed.

"I'm overdue for tormenting the bard," Yennefer said, not bothering to hide a smile.

"Well, I wouldn't want to deprive you," he muttered reflexively.
