Let’s Pretend We’ll Never Meet Again
pre-pilot au. tagging @today-in-fic
“Are you familiar with an Agent named Fox Mulder?” That wasn’t something that Dana Scully expected Chief Blevins to ask.
“Yes, sir.”
The men in the room exchanged a look- and she felt somewhat nervous.
“How so?” One of the men asked.
“By reputation. He's an Oxford educated Psychologist, who wrote a monograph on serial killers and the occult, that helped to catch Monty Props in 1988. Generally thought of as the best analyst in the violent crimes section. He had a nickname at the academy... Spooky Mulder.”
She attempted a small smile at the man in the far corner- holding a cigarette. As expected, she received no response from him.
His eyes were boring into hers, and she quickly looked away. He couldn’t possibly know, could he?
“What I'll also tell you is that Agent Mulder has developed a consuming devotion to an unassigned project outside the bureau mainstream. Are you familiar with the so-called ‘X-Files?’”
She tried to focus on what Blevins was saying, as she quickly replied with a short ‘I-believe-they-have-to-do-with-unexplained-phenomena.’
As she stepped into the elevator, it felt like a sudden swarm of thoughts slammed into her mind.
Yes, she knew Agent Mulder by reputation, but Scully also knew him from... other events, one could call it.
Other events being things that Chief Blevins and the other men in the room would not want to know of. So Scully had lied by omission.
She left out the fact that just a little over two years ago, just when she had joined the FBI, she had been familiar with Fox Mulder. Familiar in a somewhat different way than then the people she sat before would expect.
It had started with a dare. A dare that Scully was too stupid (or too tipsy) to refuse.
One of her so-called-friends that she had made during the FBI training named Aubrey saw “Spooky Mulder” sitting at the bar where they were celebrating- and dared her to seduce him.
To this day, she would never know what made her do it- but she had blamed it on the alcohol- even though she really hadn’t drank that much.
The alcohol and her stupidity.
So she did it. Dana Scully, the-one-you’d-never-expect-would-do-such-a-thing Scully went up to Spooky Mulder and said hello. Then slowly movie-style leaned into him and kissed him.
And at first, it was alright- but then after a minute or so, he leaned back.
Scully had took that as an unwelcome sign- one that meant ‘I can’t do this anymore, we shouldn’t’.
Fuck. At that time she hadn’t even considered the fact that this Spooky Mulder might have had a girlfriend- or that he would think it odd that some random person started kissing him. (It was actually neither- Mulder had just broken up with Diana Fowley; but Scully didn’t know that.)
So she ran- she ran out of the bar, just like how she ran away from Daniel and her medical career. And she buried this moment deep into a corner of her mind.
But now she had to work with him again and what were the chances that he’d remember her? That he’d think she was just some female that was in the FBI for some kind of stupid reason; that she wasn’t actually focused on her work?
The elevator rang and the doors slid open. Scully stepped out of the elevator and knocked on the door of a secluded office in the corner.
“Sorry, nobody down here but the FBI’s most unwanted!”
She walked into the room holding her breath.
“Agent Mulder. I'm Dana Scully, I've been assigned to work with you.” She decided on saying.
He raised both eyebrows and Scully knew that she was dead meat.
“Oh, isn't it nice to be suddenly so highly regarded? So, who did you tick off to get stuck with this detail, Scully?”
So he didn’t remember. She felt slightly saddened by this fact- the fact that Mulder didn’t remember her. And she didn’t know why.
Oh, but he did. He certainly did remember a night a little over two years ago; when a redhead suddenly approached and kissed him. How he had wanted to continue kissing her...
But he could pretend that no such thing ever happened. Pretend that he was never charmed- even enchanted by the woman standing in front of him now.
Pretend that he didn’t have a small crush- maybe more, on Dana Scully.
