Voiceless | Resilient Hearts
Tommy Shelby x Reader
The hospital's sterile walls couldn't contain the restless energy that permeated the air. Doctors and nurses rushed Y/N into an emergency surgery, leaving Tommy pacing the halls in his bloodied suit, his mind clouded with fear and uncertainty. The Shelby family, a stoic facade crumbling under the weight of worry, congregated in the waiting area.
Finn and John's wife Esme, having heard the distressing news, joined the anxious gathering. The collective tension was palpable, a silent prayer echoing in the hearts of each family member.
Unable to find solace, Tommy's pacing became a frantic dance of despair. Polly, the pragmatic voice in the storm, approached him with a stern expression. "Tommy, sit down. You're driving everyone mad."
His nerves frayed, Tommy snapped, his voice cutting through the sterile silence. "Calm down? How the bloody hell can I calm down when the woman I love is fighting for her life in there? I can't lose her, Pol. I just can't."
As the words escaped Tommy's lips, an unexpected vulnerability revealed itself. He sank into a chair, his disheveled appearance mirroring the chaos within. Polly, softening her gaze, placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"She's strong, Tommy. Y/N will pull through," Polly offered, a blend of comfort and motherly wisdom. But Tommy, his eyes fixed on the swinging doors that separated him from Y/N's fate, couldn't shake the overwhelming fear that gripped his heart.
In a moment of raw honesty, Tommy's voice wavered as he confessed, "I've loved her since we were kids, Polly. She's always been the one. My future was meant to be with her."
Polly, understanding the weight of his admission, offered a silent nod. The hospital's cold walls bore witness to a man stripped of his tough exterior, laid bare by the possibility of a life without Y/N.
The Shelby family, their collective breath held in anxious anticipation, found solace in the news that Y/N's surgery had been a success. The weight that had settled on Tommy's chest lifted, replaced by a cautious optimism that permeated the air.
Days turned into weeks, and the hum of the hospital became a familiar backdrop for the Shelby family. Y/N, still in a state of delicate repose, lay in her room, eyes closed, connected to the rhythmic pulsing of the machines that monitored her recovery.
Tommy, a constant presence by her bedside, held her hand in a silent promise that everything would be okay. His gaze lingered on her peaceful countenance, a stark contrast to the chaos that had enveloped their lives.
In the stillness of the hospital room, Tommy spoke to Y/N as if she could hear him, expressing sentiments he had never dared to voice before. "I've loved you since we were young, Y/N," he confessed softly. "You're my future, and I can't imagine my life without you. We'll get through this together."
The room, bathed in the soft glow of the evening, witnessed a moment of vulnerability from Tommy Shelby, a man whose heart had long been entwined with the resilient spirit of the mute girl who had captured his affections.
As Y/N's recovery unfolded, the Shelby family found strength in unity, a testament to the bonds that held them together through triumphs and tribulations. The quiet hum of the hospital became a symphony of hope, echoing the resilience of hearts that refused to be broken.

So, you know how I've been posting about my wife's upcoming surgery? Well, the doctor is now not available at the end of November, so her surgery is now in 2 weeks. The stress is real, but everything is falling into place in the way that it needs to in regard to pre-op appointments and hair removal. It feels like this was meant to happen. I find it slightly ominous that her gender affirming surgery was rescheduled before a major election. It does ease stress around that, I'll admit, but I hope it wasn't a truly necessary move when looking at the big picture, you know? Especially when the change feels very much supported by the powers that be. Regardless, everything is working out, and we're glad that it's happening. Prayers, magic, energy, etc. for a successful surgery and recovery are appreciated. As always, ordering a reading from me means a lot in regards to helping us financially. For now, I'm just gonna take some big deep breaths...

Hi there, do you wish to own a plant? It’s okay if you don’t want to own one, the plant is just the only thing I could leverage on at the moment, apologies for intruding in such manner. My name is Jay.
My mother, who shares her love for plants and gardening, has been fighting cancer for about two years. Recently, we were able to crowdfund her surgery to remove her cervix. despite the successful removal of her cervix, my mom began experiencing severe internal pains during her recovery. After several check-ups and extensive kidney tests, it was confirmed that her kidneys have been affected by the cancer in a process known as metastasis. We now find ourselves facing a new and daunting challenge. She needs medical attention as soon as possible to avoid more complications- we were too poor to start her cervical cancer treatment earlier than we did, hence the metastasis in her kidney.
Unfortunately, this new phase of treatment is extremely expensive, and we are struggling to manage the costs.
We are in a dire situation, having exhausted many of our resources to treat her previous cervical cancer.
We are ready to commission some of my mom’s favorite plants to anyone who donates $10 or more towards her Treatment. I understand that this is a lot to ask from a stranger, but your kindness and generosity could make a world of difference for my family during this difficult time.
I’ve shared more details about my mother’s past and present situation, and plants for commissioning in my pinned post. If you have a moment to spare, I would be incredibly grateful if you could read it and consider contributing.
Your support, no matter how small, would mean the world to us and would help ensure that my mom gets the life-saving treatment she needs.
Thank you for considering this request, and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need more information.
With heartfelt gratitude,
B
prayers to your mom!

"I'm glad that you are here." + Rulie?
"You nervous?" Julie asked.
"Even if I am, there's no getting out of it now," Reggie replied, offering her a weak smile. "Better or worse, this is necessary."
"At least then it'll be all over," Julie said, snuggling into his side, wishing she couldn't feel all his ribs, wishing his skin wasn't so grey and clammy.
"You're telling me," Reggie replied, tossing his head back on the pillow. "No more chemo, no more radiation. Just this one surgery, and some immunotherapy, and it's all done."
"Thank God," Julie whispered, holding him all the tighter. She didn't know what she would do if cancer stole another person from her life. But unlike with her mom, they caught Reggie's early, and it was much less aggressive.
After this, he would be in remission, and could hopefully slowly get back to his life. They could start planning again; for a future, for a family. For more time together.
"You think my hair will grow back different?" Reggie mused. "I've heard it does sometimes."
"I don't care if it grows back at all," Julie comments. "I'm just glad that you're here." She rubbed her hand over his smooth head, just to make him smile, then down his face. "I do kind of miss your eyebrows though."
"Yeah, my luck I'll grow caterpillars there instead," Reggie jested. Catching her hand to press a kiss to her knuckles. "Thank you for being here through all this. I don't know what I would have done without you by my side."
"We promised in sickness and in health right?" Julie reminded him with a wet laugh, swiping the tears from her eyes. This past year had been the hardest in her life, testing her beyond her limits, testing their marriage, but through it all, she stayed. She loved Reggie more than anything, and if cancer thought it was taking him from her, it had another thing coming.
"We did indeed," Reggie replied quietly. Yawning, he blinked at Julie. "Will you be there when I wake up?"
"I wouldn't dream of being anywhere else," Julie promised him. "Sleep now, they'll be coming for you first thing in the morning."
"Kiss?" he asked, as he did every night before falling asleep, and Julie granted him that wish, just as she always did. Only getting up from the narrow hospital bed when his breathing slowed and she was sure he was asleep.
She wished she could curl up into his embrace and sleep herself, but her mind was racing, and there was a boatload of paperwork to be signed before the surgery.
Plus she wanted to stop by the chapel, just for a moment. Reggie wasn't religious but her faith had never really left her, so she wanted to offer up a prayer, a plea, anything to see Reggie through this. To come out the other side healthy and whole once more.
Of course she knew he was forever changed by this experience, they both were. But she hoped that now they could only grow stronger from this, and more importantly, grow together.
She sat by his side all night, memorizing his features, hoping this wouldn't be the last time she saw them. Wished him luck and granting him a kiss which she believed might just be their last and only let herself cry once he was gone from sight. Let her father and Luke hold her as they waited. Let Alex and Willie force her to eat, let Flynn and Carrie distract her with gossip. Let her aunt and brother assure her with facts and faith alike.
But Julie is sure she doesn't breathe again until hours later when the doctor tells her it's been a success and Reggie is resting in his room.
"Can I see him please?"
The doctor nods and directs her to the recovery ward, letting her have a moment. Reggie is still thin and pale, tubes and wires every which where. But his eyes light up when he sees her, giving her a weak, drowsy smile. "Hey darlin'."
"Told you I'd be here," she says, blubbering the whole time, rushing to take his hand, rain kisses on his cheeks.
"So am I," he said, "and I always will be, I promise."
"Good," Julie replied. "I'm holding you to that."
Reggie fell back to sleep soon after that, and Julie followed suit in the uncomfortable chair beside him, twin smiles on their faces, and even in slumber, their hands never let go of one another.
And they never would, not for the rest of their very long lives.

A Temporary Pause: Navigating Life's Challenges Beyond the Stream
Title: A Temporary Pause: Navigating Life's Challenges Beyond the Stream
In the world of online streaming, consistency is often key. Viewers eagerly anticipate regular broadcasts, eagerly awaiting the next gaming adventure or lively conversation. However, life has a way of throwing unexpected obstacles in our path, disrupting even the most carefully laid plans. As I reflect on the past few months, I find myself compelled to share with you, my dear viewers, the reasons behind my absence from the streaming platform Kick.
In recent times, my journey has been marked by a series of trials, each one testing my resilience and resolve in its own unique way. It all began with my son's surgery, a daunting experience that consumed my attention and emotions. As any parent can attest, seeing your child undergo such a procedure is nothing short of heart-wrenching. My days were spent at the hospital, my mind consumed with worry and prayer for his speedy recovery.
Just as we began to regain our footing, another challenge presented itself. I fell ill, unexpectedly sidelined by a stubborn illness that refused to loosen its grip for three long weeks. As I lay confined to bed, my thoughts drifted to the community I had built on Kick, the friends and supporters who had become an integral part of my streaming journey. How I longed to return to the screen, to share laughter and camaraderie once more.
But life, relentless in its unpredictability, had more in store for me. Tragedy struck our family with the passing of loved ones, casting a shadow of grief and sorrow over our hearts. Coping with loss is never easy, and each day became a battle to find solace amidst the pain.
In the midst of these trials, I found myself grappling with the challenge of getting my life back on track. The demands of everyday responsibilities weighed heavily on my shoulders, leaving little room for the activities I once cherished. And so, with a heavy heart, I made the difficult decision to step back from streaming for a time.
To my dear viewers, I want to extend my sincerest apologies for my prolonged absence. Your unwavering support and understanding mean more to me than words can express. While I cannot say with certainty when I will return to streaming on Kick, please know that I am still here, cheering on my fellow streamers from the sidelines, celebrating their successes and offering words of encouragement.
In the meantime, I hope you'll join me in some casual gaming sessions with friends. Though my presence may be less pronounced, my passion for gaming and community remains as strong as ever. Together, we will navigate these turbulent waters, emerging stronger and more resilient on the other side.
Thank you for your patience, your understanding, and your unwavering support. Until we meet again, take care, stay safe, and remember that we are stronger together.
Warm regards,
RosieBomb

A Mother's Resilience: Clinging to Hope Through Grief and Hardship
The bond between a mother and her child is profound, an unbreakable tether that transcends time and adversity. This bond can be both a source of immense strength and unbearable pain, especially when faced with tragedy. This story follows the journey of a mother who, despite unimaginable grief, clung to her child and endured a path fraught with challenges, demonstrating resilience and the unyielding power of maternal love.
Chapter 1: The Shattering Moment
Maria Sanchez’s life was irrevocably changed on a cold winter night in 2005. Her only child, Daniel, was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect just hours after his birth. The news hit Maria like a freight train, leaving her breathless and paralyzed with fear. As a single mother in a small town with limited resources, the challenges ahead seemed insurmountable. Yet, from the moment she held Daniel in her arms, she vowed to fight for his life with every fiber of her being.
Chapter 2: The Struggle Begins
Daniel’s early years were a blur of hospital visits, surgeries, and sleepless nights. Maria, a nurse by profession, found herself on the other side of the healthcare system, helpless and scared. She became an expert in navigating medical jargon, researching treatments, and advocating for Daniel’s needs. Financial strain compounded her emotional burden. With mounting medical bills and the need to provide for her son, Maria took on extra shifts at the hospital, often working through exhaustion.
Yet, every night, she would come home to Daniel, holding him close, whispering promises of a better future. Their tiny apartment became a sanctuary filled with love, hope, and an unwavering determination to overcome the odds. Despite the constant fear of losing him, Maria found solace in Daniel’s infectious smile and indomitable spirit.
Chapter 3: The Road to Recovery
At age four, Daniel underwent a risky but necessary heart surgery. The days leading up to the operation were a haze of anxiety and prayer for Maria. She stayed by his side, clutching his little hand, reassuring him that everything would be alright. The surgery was a success, but the road to recovery was long and arduous.
Physical therapy, medication, and frequent check-ups became part of their routine. Maria’s resilience was tested daily as she balanced her professional responsibilities with Daniel’s care. She refused to let despair take hold, finding strength in the small victories - a stable heartbeat, a day without pain, a joyous laugh from her son. Each milestone, no matter how small, was celebrated as a testament to their perseverance.
Chapter 4: The Shadows of the Past
As Daniel grew older, the physical scars of his surgeries faded, but the emotional ones lingered. The constant battle for health took its toll on his psyche. He struggled with feelings of isolation and inadequacy, haunted by the specter of his fragile health. Maria, acutely aware of his internal struggles, sought ways to nurture his spirit as well as his body.
She encouraged Daniel to pursue activities that brought him joy and a sense of normalcy. Art became his refuge, a way to express emotions that words could not capture. Maria filled their home with paints, brushes, and canvases, creating a space where Daniel’s creativity could flourish. She cheered him on at school, advocating for his inclusion in sports and extracurricular activities, determined that he would not be defined by his medical history.
Chapter 5: The Power of Community
Throughout their journey, Maria found support in unexpected places. Neighbors, friends, and even strangers rallied around them, offering help and encouragement. Fundraisers were organized to assist with medical expenses, and local organizations provided resources and connections. The community became an extended family, sharing in their triumphs and setbacks.
One pivotal moment came when Daniel’s story was featured in the local newspaper. The outpouring of support was overwhelming. Letters, donations, and words of encouragement flooded in, reinforcing Maria’s belief in the inherent goodness of people. This support network became a lifeline, providing both practical assistance and emotional bolstering during their darkest times.
Chapter 6: The Turning Point
By the time Daniel reached high school, his health had stabilized, and he began to carve out his own path. Despite the lingering shadows of his early years, he emerged as a resilient and compassionate young man. His experiences had instilled in him a deep empathy and a desire to help others. Inspired by his mother’s strength and the kindness of their community, Daniel decided to pursue a career in medicine.
Maria, watching her son don his white coat for the first time, felt an overwhelming sense of pride and relief. The journey had been long and fraught with obstacles, but they had emerged stronger, their bond unbroken and fortified by the trials they had endured. Daniel’s path to medical school was not easy; he faced academic challenges, financial constraints, and the ever-present specter of his health. But he persevered, driven by a profound sense of purpose.
Chapter 7: Giving Back
Daniel’s entry into the medical field marked the beginning of a new chapter for both him and Maria. He chose to specialize in pediatric cardiology, dedicating his career to helping children facing the same challenges he had overcome. His unique perspective as a former patient gave him a deep understanding of his young patients’ fears and hopes, allowing him to connect with them in ways that few others could.
Maria, now retired, found fulfillment in volunteer work, supporting families navigating similar medical crises. She shared her story, offering hope and practical advice to parents in the throes of despair. Her journey from a grieving mother to a pillar of strength inspired many, illustrating the transformative power of love and resilience.
Chapter 8: A Legacy of Hope
Years later, Daniel’s medical practice became renowned not just for its expertise but for its compassionate care. He and Maria often spoke at conferences and community events, advocating for better healthcare access and support systems for families in need. Their story was a beacon of hope, demonstrating that even in the face of overwhelming adversity, it is possible to emerge stronger and more determined.
Maria’s unyielding faith in her son and Daniel’s relentless pursuit of his dreams created a ripple effect, touching countless lives. Their journey from the brink of despair to a place of healing and hope was a testament to the indomitable human spirit. Together, they had not only survived but thrived, leaving a legacy of resilience and compassion.
Conclusion: The Unbroken Bond
The journey of Maria and Daniel is a powerful reminder of the strength inherent in the bond between a mother and her child. It is a tale of enduring love, relentless hope, and the transformative power of resilience. Despite the heartache and hardship, Maria’s unwavering support and Daniel’s indomitable spirit forged a path from despair to triumph.
Their story underscores the importance of community, the impact of compassion, and the significance of never giving up. It serves as an inspiration to all who face seemingly insurmountable challenges, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, there is light, and with love and determination, we can overcome the greatest of obstacles.
Maria’s journey from a grieving mother to a beacon of strength and Daniel’s evolution from a fragile child to a compassionate healer encapsulates the profound impact of a mother’s love and the resilience of the human spirit. Their story is not just one of survival, but of flourishing against all odds, illustrating that with hope and perseverance, we can turn our greatest trials into our most significant triumphs.

Introduction
Beautiful nails are more than just a sign of good grooming; they are a reflection of one's overall health and personal style. Whether you prefer them short and neat, long and polished, or somewhere in between, maintaining beautiful nails requires a combination of good habits, proper care, and a bit of pampering. This comprehensive guide will cover everything you need to know to keep your nails looking their best.
Understanding Nail Health
Before diving into the specifics of nail care, it’s important to understand what nails are and what they need to stay healthy. Nails are made of keratin, a type of protein also found in hair and skin. They grow from the nail matrix, which is located under the cuticle at the base of the nail. Healthy nails are typically smooth, uniform in color, and free of spots or discoloration.
Common Nail Problems
1. Brittle Nails: Often caused by overexposure to water, harsh chemicals, or nutritional deficiencies.
2. Discoloration: Can result from smoking, nail polish, or infections.
3. Peeling: Usually due to excessive moisture, dryness, or using nails as tools.
4. Ridges: Can be a sign of aging, but vertical ridges can also indicate certain health issues.
Daily Nail Care Routine
1. Keep Nails Clean and Dry
· Regularly wash your hands and nails with soap and water.
· Dry them thoroughly to prevent fungal infections, which thrive in moisture.
2. Moisturize
· Apply hand lotion or a specific nail oil to your nails and cuticles daily.
· Ingredients like jojoba oil, vitamin E, and shea butter are particularly nourishing.
3. Trim Regularly
· Use sharp nail scissors or clippers to trim nails straight across.
· Round the tips slightly for a smoother finish and to prevent snags.
4. Avoid Biting
· Nail biting not only damages the nail but also the surrounding skin, leading to infections.
Advanced Nail Care Tips
Proper Filing Technique
· Use a fine-grit nail file and always file in one direction to avoid splitting.
· Avoid sawing back and forth, which weakens the nail structure.
Gentle Nail Treatments
· Cuticle Care: Push back cuticles gently with a cuticle pusher instead of cutting them, which can lead to infections.
· Polish Wisely: If you love nail polish, choose brands that are free from harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP (dibutyl phthalate). Always use a base coat to protect the nails from staining and a top coat to extend the life of your manicure.
Nail Hardening and Strengthening
· Strengthening Treatments: Products with ingredients like keratin, biotin, and calcium can help reinforce the nail structure.
· Biotin Supplements: Taking biotin supplements can improve nail strength and reduce brittleness.
Healthy Lifestyle for Healthy Nails
Balanced Diet
· Protein: Since nails are made of protein, it’s essential to include adequate protein in your diet. Lean meats, fish, eggs, and plant-based sources like beans and legumes are excellent options.
· Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins A, C, and E, along with zinc and iron, play crucial roles in maintaining nail health. Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains into your diet to ensure you’re getting these nutrients.
Stay Hydrated
· Drinking enough water keeps your nails and cuticles hydrated, reducing the risk of brittle nails.
Avoid Excessive Exposure to Water
· Prolonged exposure to water can make nails soft and prone to breaking. Wear gloves when doing dishes or cleaning.
Nail Art and Fashion Tips
Choosing the Right Nail Shape
· Square: Great for those with narrow nail beds and strong nails.
· Oval: A classic shape that suits most hands and makes fingers look longer.
· Round: Ideal for those who prefer short nails and a natural look.
· Stiletto/Almond: For a dramatic look, though they require strong, healthy nails to prevent breakage.
Nail Polish Trends
· Seasonal Colors: Choose light, pastel shades for spring and summer; darker, richer tones for fall and winter.
· Nail Art: From simple dots and stripes to intricate designs, nail art can add a personal touch to your nails.
· Matte vs. Glossy: Matte finishes offer a modern twist, while glossy finishes are timeless and elegant.
Natural Remedies for Nail Care
DIY Nail Soaks
1. Lemon Juice and Baking Soda Soak
· Lightens and whitens nails. Mix lemon juice with baking soda and soak nails for 10 minutes.
2. Olive Oil and Honey Soak
· Deeply moisturizes nails. Mix equal parts of olive oil and honey, soak nails for 15 minutes.
3. Coconut Oil Massage
· Strengthens and nourishes. Warm some coconut oil and massage into nails and cuticles before bedtime.
Professional Nail Treatments
Manicures
· Basic Manicure: Involves trimming, shaping, cuticle care, and polish application.
· Gel Manicure: Uses UV or LED light to cure polish for a long-lasting finish. However, it requires proper removal to avoid nail damage.
· Acrylic Nails: Offer length and durability but can weaken natural nails if not applied and removed correctly.
Regular Salon Visits
· Visiting a professional nail technician regularly can help maintain nail health and catch any issues early.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
1. Skipping Base and Top Coats
· Always use a base coat to prevent staining and a top coat to protect the polish.
2. Peeling Off Polish
· This can strip away layers of your nails, weakening them. Use proper polish removers instead.
3. Ignoring Signs of Infection
· Redness, swelling, and pain around the nails should be addressed promptly to prevent more serious issues.
Conclusion
Beautiful nails are within everyone’s reach with the right care and attention. By understanding the basics of nail health, adopting a consistent care routine, and embracing both natural remedies and professional treatments, you can keep your nails looking their best. Remember, healthy nails are a reflection of your overall well-being, so a holistic approach that includes a balanced diet and proper hydration is essential. Whether you prefer a simple, natural look or enjoy experimenting with the latest nail trends, these tips will help you achieve and maintain beautiful nails.

Third time is the charm.
It is very difficult for us, but it is September first and we are back in the hospital. My husband had a second surgery today as a metal wire from his first surgery had moved out of place and posed a risk of infection.
We seriously hope this is his last surgery, but his surgeon says that this repair has only a 50% chance of being permanently successful, and may require yet another surgery in the next few weeks.
This stay has been much more emotionally taxing on us; unlike the others, it feels like a step back instead of a step forward, and we are fearful at the prospect of yet another surgery (which would have a significantly longer recovery time).
Our families and our community have been a great service — both of us have wide-reaching connections through local service organizations and the outpouring of prayers and support has been staggering; but it is still difficult to endure multiple long hospital stays, and of course his experience is exponentially worse than mine.
Thank you again for every kind ask and message, they mean a lot.
Hello Internet Friends.
Rather a serious post for my goofy blog. I know I don’t have to justify my absence to anyone, but I want to put this out there. My husband, who appears in the bio of my blog, in my icon, and in many of my most popular posts, is currently in the hospital.
We have spent about sixteen scary hours between two hospitals today, and his doctors have concluded he has a lemon-sized tumor in his brain and are planning to operate this Friday. We will not have more information until then but are trying to remain optimistic.
My queue is still full and you may see sporadic posting from me in the next few days, but expect a halt on message replies and asks for the time being.
Much love to my internetters.

Reflection
During the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to do the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Swedish Hospital in Chicago, IL with four other chaplain interns during the endtail of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was an exciting time of bringing God to the patients but also a time of uncertainty because of the still very present illness which we were trying to be careful with. After a few days of orientation and shadowing the hospital chaplains, my fellow chaplain interns and I were sent out into different parts of the hospital with our own roster to visit patients and offer spiritual assistance.
After our morning hudle in the Spiritual Care Department's Office and distributing the rosters to the chaplain interns, and preparing ourselves spiritually for the day, we all went our seperate ways to begin meeting with the patients. That day I had been assigned to visit the patients on the north building who were in the recovery stages and were preparing to receive, or were already receiving, physical and occupational therapy so that they could go home. I made my way over to visit the patients and offered to pray, talk, and listen, and, most importantly, just to be present for them.
I came across a patient who stood out to me for several reasons. As I looked at my roster, I noticed her name (for this purpose we will call her Joanne), she was in her sixties, and her religion was Lutheran. Okay, so now I knew a little bit of who she was, and so I was a little wearisome as to how I would pray with her because I had never really learned about the Lutheran tradition or spirituality. So I wanted to be cautious as to what I said and how I said it. I said a prayer before going into her room, took a deep breath, took the handsanitizer, and made sure my (surgical) mask was on correctly...and I knocked on the door and asked for Joanne.
I heard her Joanne's voice as I opened the door, "Come in!" "Good morning, Joanne! I am Edgar a chaplain intern" (We were trained to say that right away since we wore white lab coats and many times patients believed that we might be one of their doctors.) I asked her how she was doing and started with small talk. We shared a little bit about ourselves. She told me she was doing well although she had just had surgery and her children had not visited her since being in the hospital for the past week. Yet, in telling her story, she seemed to have a joy in her voice. It made me wonder how she could be joful in the midst of so pain and trials, but soon I heard it. She was grateful to God that she was alive and well after her surgery.
And so in the midst of the conversation I offered if she wanted to pray and so we did. I prayed with her, we gave thanks to God for the success of the surgery, asked for her continued recovery, and asked for blessings on her and her family. As I finished the prayer, she said to me, "okay, now it's my turn to pray for you." I was happily surprised that she offered, and quickly said, "please do." Joanne prayed for over me and blessed me, asking God to be with me in my ministry during that summer and as I continued my studies as a religious.
Our conversation lasted longer than I had originally expected. When I was going into the room I didn't think that I would have anything to say to Joanne, or that I would have an "agenda," yet God provided something different. God gave me the opportunity and the blessing to recognize that I, too, can learn from those I minister to, I can receive a blessing from those I minister to, and I am in no shape or form better or above them because I am minister of God, but rather I am to walk with and alongside of them. In this experience of humility, I was able to recognize, through Joanne, that each person is an image of God and together we are called to praise give glory to God.
