artists can add all sorts of weird shit to their art and it's fine, but as soon as a writer does literally anything it's "out of character". writers aren't given that same creative freedom at all. when we take creative liberties with something, the fic is shitty and poorly characterised and "god don't you just hate it when fics do x?". we spend hours on this shit, for one tenth of the recognition artists get, and yet we get ten times the shit whenever we don't write the exact fic that someone wants us to. overwhelmingly, it's "i hate it when fics", not "i hate it when art". and it should be neither. let people fucking be creative. they're not doing this for you.

basically, i hate fandom complaints that are worded as if the person thinks that they're right and everyone else is wrong. newsflash, it's fiction - that means it's open to interpretation. if you want to be unquestionably correct, go do some 7th grade math or something. and if you want a fic with a certain characterisation that bad? then quit fucking whining about the fandom and go write it yourself.

(to be clear, this is aimed at people who are self-important dicks about it and try to hinder others' creativity, not people who are just like "oh i wish there was more of this thing". because yeah, i wish there was more scar angst too)

10th circle of hell is being in fandoms where the female character gets in the way of the gay ship. the amount of fucking awful takes i've seen, especially when they have a "not bashing, just airing valid grievances" type of disclaimer and you just know they'd never judge one of the guys in their ship as harshly. let women be annoying. let women have lapses in their judgement. let women be imperfect and stop picking them apart for the heinous crime of being there, for fuck's sake

to all my fellow writers - do yourself a favour and never compare your writing style to someone who writes in a different tense than you. like obviously take what you can and implement it in your style where possible, but i promise you, past and present tense are two totally different forms of writing that both come with their own challenges and pros and cons and should be considered as such. you're never going to write exactly like that past tense fic you read if you only write in present. it's grammatically impossible. don't hurt yourself trying to fit a square into a circle-shaped hole
