Everything You Need To Know About Quiet Books | Dr. Prashanth Gowda | Parent Circle
https://jpcdn.it/img/r/1024/576/d9842b5c758fdbe793381eff07813aae.jpg
Years ago, while exchanging notes on motherhood, a young, hassled mother told me:
“It’s only in the dead of night that I can truly be alone with my thoughts, as it seems unthinkable to enjoy some quiet time when you have toddlers at home.”
Many parents, especially mothers, may find this situation familiar, considering our children make up the centre of our universe. As much as it is a challenge to balance work and life, and to keep our little ones engaged in interesting activities, a simple solution can sometimes turn out to be a boon.
Quiet books can be a part of that solution.
Childhood is a time to explore, learn through play and do exciting things using all the senses. In an era, when babies and toddlers are hooked on to mobile phones and tablets before they can say “mama,” a quiet book not only helps in building developmental skills, it also keeps children away from the repercussions of using gadgets.
Who would know better than mother-of-two Nabeela Mahboob? Not one to be tempted to offer her children gadgets to keep them occupied, she wanted playthings that could not be torn or broken by her enthusiastic toddlers, unlike regular books or toys. Nabeela’s online research led her to a Facebook post on quiet books. But after enquiries, she found that it was not within her budget.
Being a craftsperson herself, Nabeela decided to make a quiet book for her then 2.5-year-old. It turned out to be one of the best learning tools for her little one and it was also a lot of fun.
“I decided to make my own quiet book so that I could incorporate activities that interest my daughter. I fashioned it like a story. Every page depicted a different phase of that story- a little house with a girl about my daughter’s age, who goes through various activities inside the house as well as the outdoors. The activities involve sorting and styling clothes in different combinations and colours from a closet, picking and counting apples, tying shoelaces, doing laundry and going to bed in pyjamas. I used cotton fabric and felt for the needlework, buttons, lace and foam shapes for the detailing,” explains Nabeela.
She adds that the compact nature of the quiet book made it easy for her to carry it around and it kept her daughter engaged in unfamiliar places. Her children, now four and three years old, are both enjoying the benefits of quiet books.
So, what is a quiet book?
https://jpcdn.it/img/r/1024/576/789ae364a1f14339602b419445ed94a3.jpg
A quiet book is a soft, fabric-based book, which has soft pages with different activities for children.
It is also known as a busy book or silent/activity book.
Quiet books are aimed at keeping children entertained, ‘quiet’ and ‘busy’.
Every activity in a quiet book is focussed on developing a particular skill.
It is ideal for children aged between six months and six years.
These books are especially helpful when you are in a place, where you need your little ones to stay silent or engrossed, for e.g. at a temple or church, in a hospital or while travelling.
Quiet books are made of fabric (mostly felt), and thus they are comfortable and safe for children, and quite sturdy too so, they do not get crumpled or torn like regular books.
Quiet books have brightly-coloured pages with a variety of elements and removable pieces that attract children.
Advantages of quiet books
The advantages of quiet books are that they are more fluid and flexible, compared to conventional books or toys. They allow children to play as they want – by touching and feeling and do not do the work for them. If you are creative, you can make a quiet book at home according to your child’s interests and needs. What’s more, you can add and remove pages as your child grows.
The popularity of quiet books has been gaining momentum. There are readymade quiet books available in the market from both local and international brands. Yet, young mothers who are looking for novel experiences for their babies and toddlers, prefer to do extensive research and create unique quiet books for their little ones. Here, is a story from a mother.
A mother’s experience…
Muddy Puddle, a quiet/busy book company created by Prathiba was born out of such a necessity. Five years ago, the young mother was looking for toys on the Internet that would allow her seven-month-old to explore and learn on his own.
“With electronic toys, there is not much scope for learning. Then, I came across busy books on the Internet but in those days, they were not very common in India. So, I decided to make my own after a lot of research on materials and activities. When I posted photos of the book online, I received many enquiries and requests from moms who wanted similar books for their children,” says Prathiba.
That’s how Muddy Puddle was launched. And the advantages were manifold. “It was a great help to have a quiet/busy book while travelling or when I took my son to the hospital. He would be engrossed with a quiet book for at least 45 minutes at a stretch, and no other toy could do that.”
https://jpcdn.it/img/r/1024/576/1b2ae7eebf7a9d86f02fa43f0708e688.jpg
“The idea was to counter the dependency on digital media. Quiet books are able to stimulate the sensory organs and promote cognitive learning. Our books are also in line with Montessori learning,” says Prathiba.
Do you often pick up a toy or clothes when it comes to gifting newborn or young children? Cindhu Beaulah of Doodle J, which makes engaging and customised quiet books for children, feels that we should rethink about gifting options. Most of us are guilty of opting for the readily available plastic toys or dolls as gifts. Cindhu says, “When it comes to giving a gift to a child, put some thoughts into your gifts. Quiet Books could be a beautiful alternative gift to your nieces, nephews or best friend’s newborns. These books are so fun for child, parents would thank you later for keeping their child engaged for hours without any gadgets. Or else, go to a Baby Shower invitation with a Quiet book in hand as a present for the mother-to-be! And see, how this becomes a conversation starter.”
Cindhu adds, “If your toddler or pre-schooler is showing interest in some subjects, you can encourage that with a Quite Book on the topic to fuel his curiosity. There are quiet books on the human body, daily routine, fruits and animals. Better still, order one customised Quiet Book for your pre-schooler and you will be amazed to see how children grasped different concepts with ease.”
When we asked Cindhu, how long thus it takes to make one Quiet Books. She says, “Quiet Books are fruits of labour. It could take months if the theme is elaborate and complicated or if you are really into it, you could complete it within a week or so.”
Benefits of quiet books for children
Dr Prashanth Gowda, Consultant, Paediatrics and Neonatology at Motherhood Hospitals, says when babies engage with mobiles and tablets, the colourful and moving visuals lead to prolonged use and addiction, further causing eye problems and attention issues. This does not happen with quiet books.
“We recommend parents to get quiet books for children in the ages of six months to three years, as their minds are not mature enough to avoid gadget addiction. These books will help in cognitive learning and development of motor skills. Even for older children, quiet books can be used by teachers to facilitate learning by engaging them creatively in interesting activities,” Dr Gowda adds.
Quiet books-
Foster learning and independent play while nurturing your child’s imagination and creativity.
Teach basic life skills such as tying shoelaces, brushing teeth, washing and having a bath, making a braid or buttoning a shirt.
Help develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Develop your baby’s object recognition and problem-solving skills.
Promote logical thinking and memory building.
Teach maths skills, sorting and matching, spelling and alphabets, shapes and colours.
Improve attention and concentration.
Priya Ravishankar, founder of Cubs and Calves, a manufacturer of beautifully handcrafted quiet books, says that the learning and play possibilities with quiet books are immense and manifold.
“A quiet book is like a trunk full of toys, yet convenient, aesthetic, easy to carry around and lightweight. It provides children with many opportunities to play and learn on their own – gripping the small pieces in the book, sticking them with Velcro and trying to manoeuvre things like finger puppets builds their fine motor skills; working with alphabets teaches language; when they take out all the different pieces from the book it promotes open-ended play; and quiet books that have activities related to daily life allows pretend play.”
Priya adds that the Cubs and Calves quiet books are made with eco-friendly fabric and are in line with the concepts promoted by early learning specialists and child therapists.
“Our aim is to give parents and children the choice of active and joyful learning, where the quiet book does 10 per cent of the work while allowing the child to do 90 per cent of the work.”
To sum up from the different inputs from quiet book enthusiasts, the different uses of quiet books are as follows:
Keeps children engaged while visiting public places such as hospitals, airports and train stations.
Makes a good travel companion and helps entertain children during long journeys.
Serves as a decorative item and can charm any room.
Can be passed on from one sibling to the other and preserved as a family heirloom.
Makes a thoughtful gift for children.
How to make a quiet book?
It takes a lot of patience and creative skills to make a quiet/busy book. So, only if you have a flair for the artistic and are good at crafts, should you take up such a project. The difficulty level of creating a quiet book will depend upon what kind of book you want to make for your little one.
The following video will give you a quick idea on how a quiet book is made:
https://jpcdn.it/img/r/1200/1080/8b8934590aeadeb99b63e316a43d3a13.jpg
1. Browse the Internet and social media to draw inspiration to craft your quiet book- you can gather a lot of ideas and improvise it on the go, to suit your child’s age and interest.
2. Choose a theme for quiet books based on your child’s interest-it can be cars or aeroplanes; playing house; nature and its bounty; animals and birds; sea life; festivals and celebrations; fruits and vegetables; puzzles and board games or based on a particular country or city.
3. Make a plan for your quiet book-what the pages will contain, what type of activities you want to put in, what elements you want to use. Write up these things and come up with a rough idea for the different pages.
4. Get the supplies-decide what materials you want to use and based on that you can collect all the things that will go into making the quiet book.
5. For children less than three years, ensure you do not use pieces that may be a choking hazard.
Materials required for quiet books:
Felt is the most common fabric used
You can also use cotton fabric
Wool and cotton thread for sewing
Buttons from old garments
Pom-poms and elastic
Velcro for removable pieces and
Glue to stick the pages or other accessories.
Whether you make your own quiet book or buy a busy book for your child, the idea of investing in one will definitely pay off in the long run. It will not only keep your little one engrossed for hours but will also free up some of your time.

The Future of rTMS Therapy in Bengaluru: Innovations and Advances
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) has revolutionized the treatment of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and OCD. Over the years, this non-invasive treatment has proven effective in helping patients who do not respond to traditional therapies. But what does the future hold for rTMS therapy, especially in a thriving medical hub like Bengaluru?
At Asha Neuromodulation Clinics, located at #90/D, Level B1, C/O Prashanth Hospital, Begur Main Road Bommanahalli Circle, Hosur Main Road, Bengaluru, rTMS treatment is continually advancing. In this post, we’ll explore the exciting innovations and future developments in rTMS treatment in Bengaluru and how these advancements are set to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of this cutting-edge therapy.
What is rTMS and How Has it Evolved?
rTMS works by delivering magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain, stimulating the neural circuits involved in mood regulation. It has become a widely accepted treatment for mental health conditions, particularly for individuals who have not found relief from medications or talk therapy.
In Bengaluru, rTMS treatment at Asha Neuromodulation Clinics has helped countless patients improve their quality of life. But as medical technology continues to evolve, so too does the effectiveness and application of rTMS.
Innovations in rTMS Therapy
Personalized Treatment Protocols One of the most exciting developments in rTMS therapy is the move toward personalized treatment protocols. Every patient’s brain is unique, and ongoing research is allowing clinicians to better understand individual brain activity patterns. This data enables specialists at Asha Neuromodulation Clinics to tailor rTMS sessions based on specific brain scans, ensuring more targeted and effective treatment outcomes.
Accelerated rTMS Traditional rTMS protocols involve daily sessions over a few days. However, advances in technology have made it possible to administer accelerated rTMS (a-rTMS), allowing multiple sessions per day. This innovation significantly shortens the overall treatment time without compromising efficacy. Patients in Bengaluru who are pressed for time can complete their treatment in just one week or 10 days.
New Target AreasInitially, rTMS targeted the prefrontal cortex, which is associated with mood regulation. However, researchers have identified other brain regions that can be targeted to treat a broader range of conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Asha Neuromodulation Clinics stays at the forefront of this research, offering advanced treatments that address a wider array of mental health issues.
Combination Therapies The future of rTMS lies in its integration with other therapies. Ongoing research is exploring how rTMS can be combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication to enhance overall treatment effectiveness. This holistic approach has shown promising results, providing patients with even greater relief from their symptoms.
Technological Advances in rTMS Devices
Enhanced Precision with AI Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing a growing role in the future of rTMS treatment in Bengaluru. AI-powered rTMS machines are being developed to track and analyze real-time brain activity during sessions. This allows for precise adjustments in the magnetic pulses, ensuring that each session is optimally effective for the patient.
Portable rTMS Devices Another exciting development is the potential for portable rTMS devices. While still in the research phase, portable or home-based rTMS could make treatment more accessible, allowing patients to continue their sessions from the comfort of their homes. This could be especially beneficial for patients who require long-term maintenance therapy to manage chronic conditions.
The Role of Asha Neuromodulation Clinics in Shaping the Future of rTMS
Asha Neuromodulation Clinics is committed to staying ahead of the curve when it comes to offering the latest advancements in rTMS therapy. Our team of expert psychiatrists and neuromodulation specialists is continuously trained in the latest techniques and technologies to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
Bengaluru, known for its cutting-edge medical facilities, is the perfect location for these advancements to take shape. As pioneers of rTMS treatment in Bengaluru, we are proud to offer treatments that not only meet but exceed global standards.
Why rTMS is the Future of Mental Health Treatment
The future of mental health treatment is moving away from traditional, medication-based approaches and toward non-invasive, targeted therapies like rTMS. Here’s why rTMS therapy is the future:
Non-Invasive: Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or surgeries, rTMS is non-invasive and does not require anesthesia.
Minimal Side Effects: Patients experience few, if any, side effects, making it a safe option for long-term use.
Effective for Treatment-Resistant Conditions: rTMS provides hope for those who have not responded to medications or therapy, offering a new pathway to mental wellness.
Ongoing Innovation: With constant advancements in rTMS technology, the therapy is becoming more personalized, faster, and accessible to a wider range of patients.
Conclusion
As the medical community continues to innovate, the future of rTMS treatment in Bengaluru is bright. From accelerated treatment protocols to AI-enhanced precision and new target areas in the brain, rTMS is evolving to offer even more effective and accessible mental health solutions.
At Asha Neuromodulation Clinics, we are proud to be at the forefront of these advancements, providing our patients with the most cutting-edge treatment options available. If you are considering rTMS therapy for yourself or a loved one, visit us at #90/D, Level B1, C/O Prashanth Hospital, Begur Main Road Bommanahalli Circle, Hosur Main Road, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560068 or learn more by visiting our Bengaluru clinic’s page.

What parents can do about childhood obesity | Dr. Prashanth Gowda | India Today
Parents need to ensure their children maintain healthy habits to check the increasing number of cases of child obesity
Nine months since the pandemic began and closed down Indian schools, paediatric obesity has become a major health concern. Online classes, increased screen time and the lack of physical activity due to Covid-19 have led to children and adolescents developing unhealthy lifestyles and eating habits. Dr Neetu Talwar, senior consultant and paediatric pulmonologist at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, says, “People from all age groups have been affected [by this change in lifestyle], but those under five and adolescents have been hit especially hard.” She gives the example of an eight-year-old child who came to her with complaints of nausea and lethargy and severe abdominal pain. Otherwise clinically fine, the child was prescribed symptomatic treatment but the problem remained even after two more consultations. After a little probing, she found that the child was being overfed on home-cooked pastas and pizzas.
Too much time spent on sedentary activities such as watching TV, playing video games and sitting for long hours in front of laptops and computers has contributed to the rise in cases. Dr Prashanth Gowda, consultant neonatologist and paediatrician at Motherhood Hospitals in Sarjapur, Bengaluru, says, “Proper nutrition is also not being provided to children—some overeat to cope with problems or to deal with stress or to fight boredom.” Those between three and 10 are especially vulnerable to weight gain and obesity. Dr Prashanth Gowda elaborates, “One example is of a two-year-old boy and his five-year-old brother, who liked playing video games and watch TV for hours. They had been told by their parents that they could watch cartoons while they ate; since they did not want to switch off the TV, they kept on eating. Because of the pandemic, they were not allowed to play outside, and therefore had no physical activity—the only thing they had been doing was eating and sleeping and therefore had put on weight.”
Two major complications caused by the pandemic are weight gain and loneliness. Restrictions on play time and sedentary lifestyles are major contributors. “A lot of children have developed belly fat as cooking and eating have become the new pass-times. This food obsession has led to weight gain issues,” explains Pallavi Bhardwaj, health and lifestyle coach and co-founder of Save Well Being.
Connect with Health
Obese children could even see consequences for their physical and mental health. Cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, hyperinsulinism (high levels of insulin) and abnormalities in lipid metabolism are some potential problems. Another comes from the relationship between obesity and viral diseases. “In Canada, due to the Covid-19 epidemic, obesity has become the third most prevalent demographic factor among children admitted to the ICU, behind only those with serious associated diseases, such as immunosuppression and cancer. In New York, obesity has become the most prevalent comorbidity among 50 serious cases of Covid-19 affecting children and adolescents,” says Dr Talwar. The three main risk factors that link obesity to Covid-19 shown in adults are also present in children and adolescents as well—chronic subclinical inflammation, impaired immune responses and underlying cardiorespiratory diseases.
The Role of Parents
Parents are the real teachers and inculcating healthy habits in children is an important lesson. When children have unhealthy diets—for instance, when they don’t each vegetables—their parents are in many ways responsible. Dr Anjali Hooda, director at Livenutrifit and the Center for Obesity and Longevity, says, “We force our children to study but never to eat salads, fruits and vegetables. Parents should ensure to keep their children away from gadgets, from sitting for too long and should ensure that they eat more natural foods than packed foods.”
Food habits are in some ways determined by food being offered as a reward for desired behaviour. This is often done by parents in their behavioural training of children in the early years. Dr Talwar explains: “Food is often a source of comfort rather than a source of nutrition. Obese children are known to eat more in the evening (after 6 pm) and less in the morning. This also depends on the social dietary habits of the family.” What is therefore required is for good habits to be developed—an avoidance of overindulgence, balanced diets for the entire family and an avoidance of nighttime eating—so that children learn by example.
Parents also need to ensure children have some physical activity—family walks or a jogs or being responsible for some household chores can help. “Engage children with quizzes and board games rather than screen time. Getting into healthy conversations and indulging in good nutritive meals are some ways to keep healthy. Ensure that children don’t have high-calorie diets such as packaged chips and canned juices, but consume a nutritionally dense diet,” suggests Bhardwaj.
Dos and Don’ts
Children can channel their energy into hobbies other than those involving screen time, such as cooking, arts and crafts, or at-home exercises. Dr Hooda saysm “Some form of voluntary work, like taking care of the elders and pets, helping the underprivileged are other ways to channel youthful energies in more wholesome ways. The involvement of grandparents or parents is important for such activities. Adult supervision can set a great example for them.”
Diet and physical activities are the cornerstone for healthy lives, and every child should have an hour of physical activity no matter what. There should also be limits on gadget time—two to three hours at the most—as well as good eating habits, including three to four servings of fruits and vegetables daily, and eight to 10 hours of sleep. Artificial sugar from processed foods should be minimised and packaged foods should be rationed or done away with entirely. During this crucial times, children’s health and habits are in their parents’ hands.

Secondary Infertility: When Conceiving Again Isn't Easy
The joy of becoming parents knows no bounds. Yet, for some couples, the journey to a complete family takes an unexpected turn. Secondary infertility, the inability to conceive a second child after successfully having one, throws a curveball onto the path to parenthood. It can be a deeply confusing and emotionally challenging experience, often shrouded in silence and societal misconceptions.
Understanding the Challenges
Secondary infertility can feel like a betrayal of the body and its capabilities. After all, if it happened once, shouldn't it be easier the second time around? This assumption unfortunately leaves many couples unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster they might encounter.
The challenges are multifaceted:
Grief and disappointment: Coming to terms with the possibility of not having a second child can be emotionally devastating. Feelings of grief, disappointment, and frustration are completely normal and need to be acknowledged and addressed.
Social stigma and guilt: Societal pressure to expand families can exacerbate the pain of secondary infertility. The silence surrounding the issue can lead to feelings of isolation and even guilt, fueling the misconception that they somehow “failed” at a natural process.
Relationship strain: The stress and emotional turmoil can put a significant strain on a couple's relationship. Open communication, empathy, and seeking support together are crucial to navigate this challenging phase.
Financial burden: Depending on the chosen treatment options, infertility can be financially taxing. Understanding insurance coverage and exploring cost-effective alternatives can alleviate some of the burden.
Causes and Solutions:
While the specific cause of secondary infertility may vary, a few common factors can be at play:
Age-related decline in fertility: Both male and female fertility naturally decrease with age. Women over 35 and men over 40 might experience a lower success rate in conception.
Underlying medical conditions: Conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), or male sperm issues can contribute to difficulty conceiving.
Lifestyle factors: Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and chronic stress can negatively impact fertility.
Fortunately, hope is not lost. A comprehensive evaluation by a qualified fertility specialist at a reputed fertility hospital in Chennai can help identify the underlying cause and determine the best course of treatment. Some potential options include:
Ovulation induction: Medications can help regulate ovulation and stimulate egg production.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI): Sperm is directly placed into the woman's uterus, increasing the chances of fertilization.
In vitro fertilization (IVF): Eggs are fertilized with sperm in a lab setting, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus.
Donor sperm or egg: In some cases, using donor sperm or eggs can be an option for couples facing specific challenges.
Finding the best fertility hospital in Chennai is crucial. Look for centers with:
Experienced and qualified fertility specialists: Choose a hospital with a team of experienced doctors, embryologists, and nurses specializing in reproductive medicine.
Advanced technology and facilities: Ensure the hospital uses cutting-edge equipment and techniques to maximize your chances of success.
Compassionate and supportive environment: The treatment journey can be emotionally demanding. Choose a hospital that prioritizes patient well-being and offers emotional support alongside medical care.
Chennai: Home to Top-Notch Fertility Clinics

Beyond Treatment: Embracing Hope and Support
While seeking medical guidance is crucial, remember that the journey to a second child goes beyond treatment. Here are some additional steps to navigate secondary infertility:
Seek emotional support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of loved ones, consider joining support groups, or speak to a therapist to address the emotional challenges.
Prioritize self-care: Manage stress through healthy coping mechanisms like meditation, exercise, and relaxation techniques. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally is essential.
Open communication with your partner is vital throughout this journey. Share your feelings openly and honestly, listen to each other's fears and anxieties, and offer unwavering support. Remember, you're in this together, and your bond can emerge stronger through this shared challenge.
Explore alternative paths: While biological parenthood might be your initial goal, consider other ways to build your family. Adoption, fostering, or becoming a legal guardian are beautiful paths to parenthood that can bring immense joy and fulfillment.
Redefine your happiness: Secondary infertility can force you to redefine your family's picture. Focus on the blessings you already have, explore other facets of happiness and personal growth, and embrace the unique family dynamic you are creating.
Remember, you're not alone: Secondary infertility affects more couples than you might think. Connecting with others facing similar challenges through support groups or online communities can provide valuable information, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.
Finding Hope:
The journey through secondary infertility can be a complex and emotional rollercoaster. There will be moments of despair, moments of hope, and everything in between. But it's crucial to remember that you are not alone. With the right support system, medical guidance, and a spirit of resilience, you can navigate this challenge and find your own path to a fulfilling family life, whatever that may look like.
Chennai, with its wealth of exceptional fertility specialists and supportive communities, offers fertile ground for couples to nurture their dreams of expanding their families. By taking control of your situation, seeking expert help, and prioritizing your well-being, you can turn the challenges of secondary infertility into a journey of strength, resilience, and renewed hope.
