deva: a weapon.

the movie does everything to show us that deva holds no agency over himself or his actions and that he has no ambition whatsoever.

his main trait is loyalty, and this is emphasized again and again.

• he is enraged at the mistreatment of aadhya, but where an actual 'hero' would save her, disregarding any rules or conditions – he remains bound by his mother's words.

• he is a weapon in the hands of anybody he gives his loyalty to, and throughout the movie, all of his actions aren't really credited to him, but to the person he commits these acts for/with permission of:

1. in the first scene, we see both deva and varadha, without hesitation, understand that deva has to complete the task for varadha's honor

2. it's evident, when bilal tells aadhya, that the only person who can keep her safe is 'amma' (because it is true, only deva's mother can allow deva to help)

3. when we are first introduced to deva, it is through his mother describing him as a "blood-shedding weapon"

4. when varadha comes to ask deva to accompany him, the narration doesn't feel accurate. varadha has barely voiced his request for deva to go with him – it is actually deva who wants to protect him after seeing his condition, but the narration is: "on one hand varadha had decided to take deva, no matter what, and on the other hand, his mother would not allow him to go" further emphasizing that deva is comparable to an object between the only two people who 'own' him

5. in the first action sequence, after his mother releases him from the promise he made to her, we have this shot:

framing deva's mother as if it is her who is responsible for that first blow

6. even after she has given him agency over himself, he still follows his mother's orders, not bothering to put any energy into what he thinks is the correct thing to do

7. we also see this when radha rama blames varadha for vishnu's death and has to be reminded that – no. it was the new guy who dealt the blow.

8. and again, when naarang heads in varadha's direction, completely disregarding deva and all of deva's attempts to provoke him, even though deva is the one who killed vishnu

it's an interesting way of depicting his personality – the movie equates him to a weapon at every turn, either metaphorically or though dialogue

which also makes it extremely significant, that the ONLY TIME deva has ever acted on his own (according to what we know) is when he: 1. went against his mother: to make a promise to varadha instead 2. did not follow varadha's explicit instructions: and pleaded with naarang to leave varadha alone

deva only breaks free from the narrative for varadha – which really speaks about varadha's importance and the power that varadha holds over deva.

it’s 6am and im drowning in varadeva thoughts!

prashanth neel really created 2 stalwart hulks w the physical dexterity to turn all of khansaar crimson red, while simultaneously building them to have the SOFTEST heart for each other!

they meet after 25 long years, and require no acclimation WHATSOEVER before displaying physical affection towards each other! not a moment of awkwardness. they melt and shrink w each other without any hesitation. tol big men soo smol 🥺 so attuned to each other’s bodies (!!despite the physical distance that stretched for more than 2 decades!!)

idk man but it’s fr refreshing to see two big men, carrying the capacity for such extreme violence, also embrace each other so intimately and be so vulnerable w each other!

they do not feel any pressure to give in to the macho-man-lacking-emotions persona bc they simply do not give a fuck! they feel a lot and their feelings towards each other are far greater than any possible need to push out an image of a tough, ruthless interior. they missed each other, and everyone will have to endure that!

just boyfriends always caring for each other. varadha looking out to ensure his man has his chili powder (to be loved is to be seen!! bc you remembered that detail for 25 years?) deva making space for him to lay his head, CARESSING him, making sure he’s taken care of in such a vulnerable drunken state, remaining by his side through the night 🥹🥹 he would jump in and fight off the nightmares for varadha if he could!

these are all !!open!! declarations of love, your honor! and my men don’t shy away from it either. they love each other and they will make it everyone’s problem (cue the flashback to narang’s beheading for being audacious enough to touch deva’s varadha in his presence)

love when south indian directors and actors make blatantly gay movies but still try to pass them off as “ macho macho straight as a rod ” like lmao the only thing straight in those movies is bae's dick dicking down their euphoric bae periodt

also looking at our latest queer addition : salaar — vardha is a fucking simp for deva and deva is straight up possessive devoted boyfriend that's obedient to his word like a guard dog is submissive but that won't matter if vardha is in trouble

also prashanth neel i don't need to be in your walls because i kNOW they're gonna reunite / make up in the end one way or another — they love each other too much to ACTUALLY kill each other . the only way that can successfully happen is if they pull a hannigram and jump off a cliff together .

ALSO they were totally flirting in the rabid men final fight scene like vardha's face when deva said he had a lot of friends and that they were a lot more beautiful than him ??? the confusion , the anxiety , the offence taken in his eyes ?????????? just fucking kiss already trauma be damned y'all bonded for life

1. No way rocky and Varadha having the same confused but intrigued expression on their faces while Deva and Reena dragged them on their hands and set to bring them wherever they want to go as this strong headed character that their lover will follow anywhere they take them. Helppp

2. Varadha and Reena having the same wonder in their eyes as their lovers put the sacred jewelry on them and couldn't believe that this person in front of them could love them this much!

3. The way Reena and Varadha both jumping in their lovers' arms like a little kid argghhhhh the way Rocky and Deva trying to brace the impact and managed to keep themselves steady and protectively secured their clingy lovers in their strong arms immediately like??

4. Varadha and Rocky laying their heads on their respective lovers' lap help me as their loved ones pat them soothingly on their chests and run their fingers through their hairs !!

5. Possessively put your hand across your lover's body for what? Not once varadha did this in the entire movie, he just acted like Deva’s boyfriend most of the freaking time!

I see what you did there Prashanth neel, clear as a day 😭 I mean knowing his vision and how he directed certain action to show a progress in a romantic relationship in his previous movie then putting the same mindset while directing varadeva with similar shoot and point of view I think it should be an easy math to conclude what he actually meant by those scenes huh
