This game deals with heavy topics such as violence, pr*stitution, x*nophobia and human tr*fficking.

+ BUSTAFELLOWS is visually very pleasing, with unique features. You can tell that they put a lot of time and effort into this aspect of the game. There are animated scenes sprinkled in which make for an exciting experience. The game has a good atmosphere, accentuated by some very nice and often times catchy music.

+ A cast of charming Characters. This is definitely the games strong suit. From the heroine who’s quick-witted to both interesting love interests and side-characters. The interactions between the characters are a lot of fun to read, as is getting to know them.

+ An ambitious story with a lot of twists and turns... the main stories (i.e. the common route and those involving the love interests) are well rounded and enjoyable. This is a personal thing but I quite like it when the main part of a visual novel is more plot-focused. With enough romance sprinkled in to get chemistry between the characters going, giving like an epilogue-esque story afterwards where you get to experience the MC with her lover as a couple. I also loved the little scenes that would differentiate who’s affection among the LI’s is the highest during the common route (especially the one where every guy will pick a different outfit for the Heroine, that was very entertaining and interesting).

- ... but maybe a little too ambitious towards the end. There isn’t really a lot of build up to the final stories you unlock, and they raise more questions than they answer. It almost feels like they were setting up a fandisk that never came. I found the stories interesting nonetheless, but they could have been executed better.

- Some scenes (movies) didn’t include a translation or you have to access the Backlog to aquire them. Initially I was thinking about being more lenient with this because overall PQube did a good job with the localization and I’d love to see more. But I do believe in valid criticism so I’d like to point this out. I started and ended the game with only understanding snippets because my weaboo Japanese I-watched-anime-all-summer-as-a-teen can only get me so far. I’m assuming this is due to coding because of Bustafellows unique system. But some animated scenes do not have subtitles or anything. I didn’t mind that so much for the small previews you get inbetween Chapters because that’s dialogue that will come up anyways. I could also do with the initial introduction having no translation since it was short - though that was a bit of an odd start. But the fact that I couldn’t understand anything during the final moments of the game (by this I mean the last story you unlock which focuses on a side-character) was very disappointing. You’re left with an almost 2 minute movie that has no translation and that’s it - a kind of dissatisfying ending.

∙ The system is... unique. I don’t want to say it’s bad per se because it works once you get used to it. But especially the fact that you can’t save during choices was odd.

BUSTAFELLOWS shines due to it’s main story and Characters, with PQube providing an overall good localization aside from the point I mentioned above. If you want to read an atmospheric crime story that knows how to be both fun and serious then you should definitely give this visual novel a go!

Song of Memories to Launch in the West for the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2018

Earlier, PQube Games confirmed plans to publish Pure Wish’s Song of Memories to North America and Europe for the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2018.

I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a VN that won’t let you save during choices, but here we are. Aside from that the game is pretty straighforward so far. Plus, luckily there is at least the option to Jump/Skip to the next choice after you’ve experienced that part of the story once. I’ll try to cover as much as I can but might have to make a separate post to fill out the Memorablia since working with being unable to save during choices and Jump/Skip is not necessarily hard but kind of... awkward.
