Earlier today I was messing around practicing some 3D work and I decided to try making a motorcycle helmet. Having seen the ones with the cat ears I decided to add them to see what it looks like. When my wife saw it she wanted me to make it fit her dolls. It is not perfect but it was fun to mess around with. :)

So I noticed while browsing that Mattel has the $300 ThingMaker at ToyFair. The framework components of this thing look Identical to my UP! Mini. The X-Axis, The Y-Axis and Bed framework are identical. So far I haven’t been able to find any information confirming this but based on the picture alone it looks like the thingmaker is based on the same design.

I just backed this awesome project on kick starter for an updated UP! Mini heated bed. I have been using an UP! Mini for a little over a year and it is a great little desktop printer. I use my reprap for tricky\detailed prints but when I just want reliable printing I use the mini. My wife loves it because it is super simple to use. A common problem with this printer however is the heated bed not being settable or evenly heating. This looks to be potentially a great upgrade for this machine!

A customized quad-copter battery holder. Created from a customizer on Thingiverse. My battery kept wanting to slide out of the battery straps while flying so I customized this and then split the model into two pieces so that I could print it on my UP mini. Pieces were then individually attached to the bottom of the quad.
It can be downloaded here

Another fun failure. These only seem to happen at times when I leave the printer on its own for awhile without checking on it. lol
In this case I believe I had the print temp too low for this particular material and a taller piece didn't stick to the bed. It likely fell over and the nest started from there. At least I know now not to go so low with this material. :)

First epic fail print after a few months of printing. :) I have had failures before (warps, ect) but this is the first total failure. Print temp / infill settings were off. (618 Nylon) Started the print and left it for awhile. Came back to it later and this is what I found.
This is one of the screws I was reprinting for this pcb vise from thingiverse.

A small test print of a vase to see how the lower temp yellow ABS I got in works with the octave temp mod on my UP! mini. Not too bad.
The ABS is from amazon here

I received a new package of items for my 3D printer today. I posted a few days ago about getting an Octave temp mod and Nylon filemant. I didn't notice at the time that it also came with a Garolite print plate. I downloaded a cover for my extruder from thingiverse in order to mount the temp mod but found that I needed to modify it in order to get it to work with my UP! mini. (changes to cover detailed below). I will post some example prints of Nylon, PLA, and some ABS at different temps when I get a chance.
1. There was not enough clearance to put the temp mod on top. So I had to change the hole on top so that could use the clip to mount it on the front.
2. The connector going to the extruder from the printer board was too tall so the cover would not snap on properly. cut a few layers and some infill out to fix this.
3. some of the clips did not fit into place and I had to trim them a bit.

As another test on my 3D printer I printed this Julia Vase last night. About 3.5 inches tall. I will likely wind up using it for a small plant. The layers are somewhat less noticeable by eye than the close-up of the camera. Layer height is 0.25mm and the material is ABS. The print took about three hours.
