400 years back, Paracelsus stated that, “All substances are poisons; there is none which is not a poison.”
If the right dose is taken, it could become a remedy, otherwise poisonous.
Poison - a substance which when administered, inhaled or swallowed by living organism causes ill effects on the body. It is defined also as a medicine in a toxic dose. Toxic substance may be solid, liquid, gas or any environmental agent.
Forms of Poison
Physical form: Gaseous/volatile/vaporous forms of poisons act faster than liquid poisons as they are quickly absorbed. Similarly, liquid poisons act faster than solid poisons. Gaseous or volatile > liquid > solid. For solid poisons, powdered poisons act quickly than the lumps. For example, there are certain seeds that escape the gastrointestinal tract as they are solid, but when crushed, they can be fatal. For solids: powdered > lumps
Chemical form: Few substances like mercury or arsenic are not poisonous as they are insoluble and cannot be absorbed when they are in combination with other substances like mercuric chloride, arsenic oxide, etc. In other cases, the action is vice versa. For example, there are some substances that become inert in combination with silver nitrate and hydrochloric acid and are deadly and poisonous when present in pure forms.
Mechanical combination: The effect of poisons is significantly altered when they are combined with inert substances.
Action of Poisons
Local action: Direct action on the affected site of the body. Examples include irritation and inflammation in strong mineral acids and alkalis, congestion and inflammation by irritants, the effect on motor and sensory nerves, etc.
Remote action: Affects the person due to absorption of that poison into the system of that person. For example, alcohol is absorbed in the system and then it affects the person.
Local and remote actions: Some poisons can affect both local and remote organs. Thus, they not only affect the area with contact to the poison but also cause toxic effect after absorption into the system.
General action: The absorbed poison affects more than one system of the body, for example, mercury, arsenic, etc.
Route of Administration
The route of administration is the path through which a drug, toxin, or poison is taken or administered into the body of a person which is distinguished by the location where any drug is applied. It is mostly classified on the basis of its target:
Topical—has a local effect
Enteral—has a wide effect, i.e., affect the whole system
Parental—follows a systemic action
Poisons are given or taken so that death can occur at once by shock due to stoppage of body’s vital systems.
Route of administration plays a very important role in determination of death by poison as time in which death occurs are fastest in inhaled poisons, relatively slow in injected and lastly when ingested orally.

Drowsiness, irritability, or jumpiness
Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain without fever
Lip or mouth burns or blisters
Unusual drooling
Strange odors on breath

Poisons Based on Toxico-analytical Classification
1. Gaseous poisons: methanol, ethanol, benzene, toluene, acetone
2. Volatile substances: ethane, butane
3. Organic Non-volatile substances:
Drugs - opiates and synthetic narcotics, sedatives and hypnotics, stimulants, depressants
Pesticides - insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, rodenticides, nematocides
4. Metallic poisons: arsenic, lead, mercury, antimony, zinc, copper
5. Anion poisons: bromide, cyanide, fluoride, hypochlorite, nitrate, phosphate, sulfide, sulfate
Poisons Based on Physical State
1. Solid: lead, arsenic, mercury
2. Liquid:
Organic - ethanol, methanol, chloroform, acetone
Inorganic - liquid ammonia, liquid sulfur dioxide

Poisonous Fumes or Gases
In the home, poisonous fumes can be emitted from the following sources:
A car running in a closed garage
Leaky gas vents
Wood, coal, or kerosene stoves that are not working properly
Mixing bleach and ammonia together while cleaning, which makes chloramine gas
Strong fumes from other cleaners and solvents
Common Household Products
Oily hydrocarbon products are thin and slippery and can easily suffocate if the substances are drawn into the lungs when ingested. The products can cause chemical pneumonia by coating the inside of the lungs. Products that are required to have a safety lid include:
Baby oils
Sunscreens
Nail enamel dryers
Hair oils
Bath, body, and massage oils
Makeup removers
Some automotive chemicals (gasoline additives, fuel injection cleaners, and carburetor cleaners)
Cleaning solvents (wood oil cleaners, metal cleaners, spot removers, and adhesive removers)
Some water repellents containing mineral spirits used for decks, shoes, and sports equipment
General-use household oil
Gun-cleaning solvents containing kerosene
Oil products that are thicker and more "syrupy" are not as problematic, since they are not as easily inhaled into the lungs.
What to do if a poisoning happens
Swallowed poisons
Stay calm, act quickly, and follow these guidelines:
Get the poison away
If the substance is still in the mouth, make them spit it out or remove it with your fingers (keep this along with any other evidence of what was swallowed)
Do not make them vomit
Do not follow instructions on packaging regarding poisoning because these are often outdated. Instead, call Poison Help to get connected to a local poison center.
Take or send the poison container with you to help the healthcare provider find out what was swallowed.
Poisons on the skin
If someone spills a chemical on his or her body, remove his or her clothes and rinse the skin with lukewarm—not hot—water.
If the area shows signs of being burned, continue rinsing for at least 15 minutes, no matter how much they may protest.
Then call the poison control center for further advice.
Do not use ointments or grease.
Poison in the eye
Flush the eye by holding the eyelid open and pouring a steady stream of lukewarm—not hot—water into the inner corner of the eye.
If this is a child, you may need help from another adult to hold the child while you rinse the eye.
Continue flushing the eye for 15 minutes, and call the poison control center for further instructions.
Do not use an eyecup, eyedrops, or ointment unless the poison center tells you to do so.
Poisonous fumes or gases
If someone breathes in fumes or gases, get him or her into fresh air right away.
If they are breathing without a problem, call the poison center for further instructions.
If they are having difficulty breathing, call 911 or your local emergency service (EMS).
If they have stopped breathing, start CPR and do not stop until they breathe on their own or someone else can take over.
If you can, have someone call 911 right away.
If you are alone, perform CPR for 2 minutes and then call 911.
Be prepared for a poisoning emergency by posting the poison center telephone number by every telephone in your home.

basic ass witch tips 🔮

please note that these are all related to things i have actually seen discussed or mentioned. please do your research before blindly following the advice of someone online, myself included.
if you're on some kind of medication, including but not limited to hormonal birth control, heart medication, and anti-depressants, double check with your healthcare professional/provider [HCP] before you drink that new tea you just bought.
always, always, always tell your HCP before trying any kind of herbal supplement, whether it’s something you made yourself or something you bought at the store.
have a diagnosed medical condition? talk to your HCP before ingesting anything or putting anything on your body that you aren’t familiar with.
don’t. drink. essential. oils. essential oils are not consumable!!!!!
citrus oils can cause photosensitivity, or being sensitive to light and more susceptible to sunburns so be mindful when using these oils on your skin.
if it hasn't been emphasized enough, PLEASE dilute your essential oils before use! common carrier oils are grapeseed, castor, olive, coconut, avocado, almond, etc.
oil and water don't mix, so you would need to use an alcohol based solution with essential oils to dilute them that way (if you plan to use them for a spray or something of that nature).
be mindful of using sprays, incense, powders, etc. that could release particulates into the air around pets or those who have allergies, respiratory issues, etc.
don't involve your pets in your practice in a way that could be harmful to them - no essential oils on them, no crystals in their water bowl, no moon water that's been sitting on your shelf for weeks.
i beg you, please don't put crystals in any uh bodily orifices.
there are some herbs you absolutely cannot burn (or use safely, really) for any reason, so make sure you're educated on all that beforehand; yew, for example, is highly toxic and potentially fatal if consumed or inhaled. the leaves, bark, and seeds contains a chemical called taxine, which is what some of the most hardcore chemotherapies are made from so keep that in the back of your mind.
that being said, please wear gloves and use common sense if you decide to forage for your own herbs or plants. i know that plant identifying apps exist so if you have a smartphone, that might be a good place to start.
putting salt on grass does a couple of things: salt removes moisture from the soil, thus drying out the grass and killing it; and, salt causes chloride to build up in the soil, thus making it toxic which inhibits chlorophyll production, leading the grass to eventually "starve" and die - please don't do this.
don't leave candles unattended - even small ones; it's not a good habit to get into.
also!! crystal balls in direct sunlight can cause a fire so be careful!
more fire stuff - be mindful of the environment and also safety so check for burn bans before you make a fire outdoors.
sterile lancets, not needles or pins. that's all i'm gonna say about that.
don't drink water you collected from anywhere outside unless you plan to properly filter it first.
if you plan to store water for later use (moon water, for example), refrigerate it or set it in a cool, dark place.
distilled water is free of minerals and contaminants so it has a longer shelf life than tap or bottled water - keep this in mind when making charged waters or other potion type things.
fresh herbs or other things of that nature left at room temperature can also grow super harmful bacteria. for example, putting raw garlic in olive oil and leaving it at room temperature will end as a breeding ground for botulism and mold.
be safe out there!

@marzipanandminutiae it's clean dry hands that are bare BUT you need to be aware of the likelihood of toxic chemical treatments as part of the historical conservation within the museum. That is, lots of museum textiles/ethnographic materials are coated in extremely toxic compounds as insecticides, because that was the done thing.
At Penn Museum some of the anthropological textiles had a risk of various toxic substances on them due to older (now no longer practiced!) methods of treatment against pests/museum conservation practices.
Rather than touching or inhaling whatever people were using as pesticides for textile preservation in the late 1800's, I used gloves and appropriately masked to handle those objects when I was there.
Treatments against pests often included arsenic, mercury, and lead. Fun! ("Inorganic pesticides — arsenic trioxide (As2O3) or arsenous acid and mercury as mercuric chloride (HgCl)")

Application methods of pesticides are as varied as the pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides that have been used on collections throughout the decades. Understanding the different application methods is important in order to evaluate past methods of care, visible chemical alterations, and possible health hazards. One pesticide might have been applied in many different ways with a variety of individual preparations and recipes at different museums. It is often difficult to obtain information on preparation and application of the pesticide in question, since these treatments were probably considered standard procedure at the time and were often not recorded or documented. Also prior to 1972 (When the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act was passed) the use and application of many pesticide chemicals was unregulated. The pesticide chemical may be formulated in oil concentrate, emulsifying concentrate, wet able powder, dust, baited or resin pest strip. The chemicals might have been applied through dipping, spraying, aerosol bombing, misting, dusting, or fumigation techniques. Objects might have been completely filled or covered with a chemical over long periods of time. As the pesticide formulations changed over time, the application methods developed as well.
Otoh, ceramics I always handled bare handed, because they never needed any insecticide treatment.
But I would be way more worried about textiles barehanded than manuscripts. Not because of the objects, but for your own health and safety.

The core is what gives LVT flooring its strength, flexibility and water-resistant properties. Most manufacturers use PVC (polyvinyl chloride) mixed with either fibreglass or a stone polymer. Luxury vinyl tiles made from a PVC and fibreglass mix tend to be more affordable and flexible making it a great choice for use in residential spaces. Whereas, LVT made with a PVC and stone powder mixture tends to be more rigid, stable and waterproof making it particularly good for commercial spaces.   The Print Layer On top of the core, manufacturers use a thin film that is digitally printed with a natural design (usually wood or stone) to transform the tile to accurately replicate a natural product. Different luxury vinyl tiles have different thicknesses of protective layer. Logically, the thicker the layer the more durable the tile will be to scratches and accidental damage. Most manufacturers use a protective layer that is also UV (ultraviolet) resistant, which helps to stop the tile from fading due to excessive exposure to the sun meaning the tile can maintain its colour and design for longer. The Under Layer   Some luxury vinyl tiles come with built in underlay in the form of an under layer. This will remove the need for buying a separate sheet of underlay. Some under layers are made from foam and some are made from cork. The under layer helps add a touch of comfort underfoot when walking on these LVTs and also protects the tile from the subfloor affording it a longer life.   Are LVTs Environmentally-friendly?
