Over the next 25 years, many thousands of low-income Atlantans, mostly African American, would call it home. Shoddy construction and a lack of funding left the project and surrounding landscape in disrepair and led to a rapid decline in the quality of life. As public housing in America became increasingly stigmatized and abandoned, and a crack wave swept through the neighborhood, East Lake Meadows became nearly uninhabitable, but residents nonetheless found ways to overcome violence and neglect, raise kids, find work, and create moments of joy. In the mid-1990s, Atlanta bulldozed East Lake Meadows to make way for new mixed-income housing, as government and philanthropic funds poured into the area in an effort to create a thriving community. My family and I have been traveling by car through the Midwest for three weeks now. It has been great visiting friends and family. I have also enjoyed what Mother Nature has to offer. But I feel need to mention that every small town we drove and every city through or stopped in had some number of empty and decaying buildings and homes. The indication of poverty is stark. While Umi Feeds was in Miami hosting "Soulful Sunday Looking Like Big Momma's", around the same time my other sister friends were hosting Umi's Mobile Market. This weekend was a big weekend for Umi Feeds! I was getting calls and messages to pick up food in addition to delivering food. With me being in Miami I wasn't able to take on all that was offered. However, when you have the support that I have things get done! I am so thankful for these sisters and brother right here! We had four food pickups and they were able to make it all happen! A special thanks go out to you Nyemay, I don't know what I would do without you! You ALWAYS make it happen, even when you're not physically there! I sincerely thank you! Sister Omi, ever since I met you a few months ago, you were down for the cause. I appreciate it and you! Martha, another one that since I met you the amount of support you have shown Umi Feeds is tremendous! I am completely thankful to you! Brother Calvin, Buddy, thank you for stepping in and doing what is necessary to get things done! I also thank you, Jamie, for your continuous support and for sharing Umi Feeds with your friends and family. I love you all for it. I got a last minute request to bring food to a family in need. Of course, the request would come while I was out of town! I sent the message to the group and Nyemay made it happen! They packed a large box of food and delivered it to this particular family. A recent Bank of Montreal report said that the wealth of Canadian seniors has quadrupled since 1984.  A follow-up article in Maclean’s asked: “Why are we doing so much to try to help seniors when they’re already the wealthiest generation in history?”  Irresponsible articles such as this ignore the fact far too many seniors have no assets to speak of at all.  Whether the poverty rate for seniors is 5 percent or 9 percent, far too many Canadian seniors live in or near poverty levels and it is irresponsible to suggest cutting back senior pensions across the board.  Read the article here.. http://goo.gl/CbdyZl #povertyinamerica   #canadapensionplan   #seniorliving   #canada http://click-to-read-mo.re/p/9S6A/52e54b3a

Umi Feeds Miami! Umi Feeds Miami was awesome! "Food is more than a meal. It's an event. It's a celebration that's shared, savored and enjoyed." This past Sunday Umi Feeds was in Miami and we served 100 men and women, mostly men. Every feeding is different. Atlanta is different than Miami and New York. New York was different than Miami. We had no setup we just simply went where the people were, literally. We didn't just give out food, as important as that was, we also gave out love, time, compassion, smiles, gentleness and kindness. It's one thing to feed people, which is one of my favorite things to do but it's another to do it with your sister friends. We're all busy with this journey called life but when we can convene for a weekend and make this the plan, my heart was full.
