MDZS Wangxian Fic recs (based on the novel canon and characterisation)

If you are in the mood for fics following the novel canon and characterisation, you might find it overwhelmingly difficult to find some considering how many fics labelled “mdzs” are actually based on or takes elements from the CQL!canon/characterisation.

Here are some of my favourites:

a stone to break your soul, a song to save it by rikke (M, 180k).

When the entire cultivation world turns against Wei WuXian, Jiang Cheng comes up with a plan to save him and arranges a marriage between his brother and the Second Jade of Lan, Lan WangJi.

Might be my absolute favourite in the fandom. A canon-divergent, case-fic that gets the characters absolutely right, and weaves an intricate plot following mdzs’ themes and plot beats. tbh I’d recommend all of rikke’s fics in the fandom.

Murder at the Masquerade by krazieLeylines (M, 60k).

“You better behave tonight,” Jiang Cheng spoke up, poking a hole into Wei Wuxian’s thoughts. “Just because we’ll be in disguise does not mean your actions won’t have consequences. If I hear of any mischief, I will know exactly who to blame.” Wei Wuxian laughed again. “Well, that’s not fair,” he replied, “Is that not the whole purpose of a masquerade? To let ourselves be unrestrained, just for one night, with no strings attached?” (In which the Jin family hosts a masquerade.)

Another of my favourites. Although it is a Victorian!AU case fic with western fantasy elements, this fic manages to stay fateful to the spirit of the novel. Very engaging. This fic is the first in a series set in the same universe: Detective Wei Wuxian Series.

The Guests of Cloud Recesses by cafecliche (M, 10k).

“We’re in this together, you know,” Wei Wuxian says. “You’re dead. I used to be dead.We're both tolerated and incredibly unwelcome here. We both annoy the same people, as far as I can tell. I’ve built relationships on less. Let’s work this out.” But again, there’s no response. (Or: there's a ghost in the Cloud Recesses.)

Another of my favourites. Post-canon fic. It explores wwx’s “trauma” in a way that is consistent with his characterisation in the novel. Wangxian is also absolutely soft.

for you, a smile from heaven by jiazhen (T, 5k).

“You’re not fair at all,” he whines. “You don’t say a single word, and I’m already like this.Do you know what you’re doing to me? My heart is beating so fast right now. Lan Zhan, you’re making me sick. You’re making me lovesick.” (or: The day is strange. Wei Wuxian wakes to see his husband still in bed.)

Post-canon fic. Extremely soft, will make you feel too many emotions. The author shows a great grasp of the characters.

A Justice for All (series) by firesonic52 (two completed fics within the series)

Ace-Attorney!AU

Completely delightful, even if the premise might appear a little wacky. Pre-relationship so far. If you love the murder mystery aspects of mdzs, you have to give this series a read.

Concerning Rabbits by pomme (G, 28k)

Years of silence have created gaps of conversation that are wider than Wangji has ever known, and isn’t sure how to fill. But while he’s quiet, the rabbits are even quieter, and he’s found it helps to talk to them.

“We have a—” and Wangji doesn’t know how to finish. “We have a guest,” he decides. “You do not know him, but your grandparents did.”

The black rabbit wrinkles its nose.

Wangji reaches out to stroke its back. “I also do not like strangers. But you will like him.”

In which Lan Wangji navigates life, family, grief, friendship, and love through the years—with rabbits.

A contemplative character study. One of my favorite take on the many iterations of lwj’s pov of the events of the novel.

Lan WangJi gets to wake up to Wei WuXian asleep beside him for the rest of his life

Post-canon fic, full of soft wangxian.

To Capture a ghost by (M, 10k)

“Oh, Hanguang Jun is back from seclusion, after thirteen years?” Wei Wuxian perks up with practiced casualness. “Going to chase after me again ehe…”

He must be even more bored than Wei Sizhui thought to look forward to play hide-and-seek with a ferocious martial god he’s been religiously avoiding for decades. “Not that I know of. I believe he’s planning to descent to hunt down the bridegroom ghost.”

“What!” Wei Wuxian bristles at that, looking mortally offended. “Lan Zhan would rather capture some low class Menace over me, the Awful Terrible Not Good At All Yiling Patriarch? That’s unacceptable.”

Or: the Yiling Patriarch Crimson Light Dancing On Graves and His Highness the Crown Prince of Gusu Hanguang Jun, from the eyes of others. A Wangxian in TGCF AU.

TGCG!AU. Any fics dealing with wwx’s ridiculous and petty attempts to catch and keep lwj’s attention (as if he already didn’t have it) has a special place in my heart.

asymptotic by chinxe (M, 26k)

The members of the Lan Clan have never been particularly well-known for their good judgement when it comes to matters of the heart.

Which is why it should come as a surprise to no one when Lan Wangji falls in love with an actual ghost.

Canon-divergent!AU. I feel like everyone has read this one already, but it doesn’t hurt to make sure everyone gives it a read!

WIPs WORTH READING

An arrow through time by syrus_jones (M, 8/?)

Lan Wangji stared at the bump beneath the covers of his bed. Stared at the intruding hand that led to the arm that led beneath said bump of covers. His mind was empty, as if refusing to process this image meant that it simply would not exist.

It had been a good plan, as far as Lan Wangji had been concerned, at least until he remembered that lying was prohibited in the Cloud Recesses. Surely denouncing the existence of something fell beneath that category on account of lying to oneself?

In which Lan Wangji passes out after leaving the QishanWen archery competition only to wake up an indeterminate time in the future with a beautiful, infuriating, very naked stranger in his bed. It goes about as well as expected.

Time-travel/Dimension-travel!fic. This fic yanks you in so many different directions. The author updates regularly, so you won’t have to wait for two months between chapters. This fic really understands the crafty, strategic side of wwx, and how lwj is also very good at deductive thinking.

Flowers of Blood and Bones by Sakurafubuki (15/?)

Wei Wuxian is a Hunter, like his mother was before him. He's been trained since he was a child to answer the call of the Hunt, he's survived until he's become the most proficient slayer of his generation, and even if he's been forced to learn how to fight the hard way, even if his siblings and himself are the only remaining Hunters in town, he's always known where he stands, and what to do, and who the enemy is.

Part of him is very aware that a Hunt can go wrong, but he would have never expected to have his life spared by a vampire when it happens - not out or mercy or of concern, but because of sheer indifference.

And it's not like he's looking for this, or that he has any desire to collaborate with one of the creatures he's been raised to kill, but something is happening in that small world of theirs, and when circumstances call for it Wei Wuxian will have to swallow his pride and be practical - and maybe realize along the way that there's a lot he doesn't know about vampires after all.

Vampire and Hunter!AU in a modern setting. I have literally harassed my friend who hasn’t read mdzs about this fic because it got me too hyped up. It is just that interesting and compelling--I find myself thinking about it out of nowhere or thinking about the choices the author made with their version of vampires and hutners. I love the take on lwj and the Lan’s infamous obsession with regulation. The author doesn’t update often, but the chapters are long and--just read it.

Thief of Souls by gotcocomilk (M, 5/?)

In the depths of the Stygian Tiger Seal slept a soul.

It was a relentless thing, bright and brilliant as the dawn. It was a fragile thing too, broken by tragedy too terrible to name. Through the resentful energy and in the cracks of cold iron it clung on, prisoner and patriarch. Beneath a bloody patina, it had no dreams but nightmares, and no thoughts but memories.

And now, in the cruel fingers of Xue Yang, it would awaken.

Gotcocomilk has written a lot of delightful pieces for the fandom, and I’m very curious where she’ll take this one.

The signal we send by flowercities (M, 1/?)

As head of security at Gusu Lan Industries, Lan Wangji is one of the rare androids to have risen this far up the ranks of the company he was created to work for. The last thing he needs is a wanted hacker ruining it all for him by bringing long-buried emotions to the surface.

A Cyberpunk!AU with an Android!lwj and hacker!wwx. The premise of the fic has been set perfectly with the first chapter. Unfortunately the fic has not updated since January.

Who Will Wed Wei Wuxian? by fancypineapple (M, 4/?)

The most famous, most powerful, most reviled black wizard alive, Wei Wuxian, is looking for a wife. Not just any ordinary wife - a black witch, one as formidably strong and wicked as himself, so their combined bloodlines bring about a heir to the throne of dark magic.

When he and his men put together a competition to find the witch of his dreams, what could be the meaning of renowed peacemaker and whiter-than-white wizard Lan Wangji being among the participants? A mistake? An assassination plot? How does he plan to compete in a Black Arts contest, righteous as he is? How do the other competitors feel about having a white wizard around?

And who the Hell wears a necklace made of human eyes?!

Modern AU! with magic. Absolutely delightful and entertaining, although the fic has not updated since February.

my top ten calendiles fics (that i wrote)

this rec list took me a solid chunk of time to compile, because my fics are my babies and i honestly wanna throw quite a few of them up here. but EVENTUALLY i stopped being indecisive and finally managed to get this sorted, so here goes! if you wanna read some of my stuff, this is the stuff that i am the most proud of/in love with/would cry if someone asked me leading questions about it + drew me fanart of it. these are not ranked except for the top two, because the first one is my baby and the second one is still very beloved to me.

under the cut, because i have loving commentary!

1. as day follows night (multi-chapter)

Looking for a safe place to stay after her accidental murder of the Deputy Mayor, Faith Lehane allies herself with a mysteriously powerful witch—and stumbles into a fairytale mystery that's bigger than anything she could have anticipated.

(this fic is my goddamn baby. this fic is my C H I L D. this fic is the fic that i took extensive notes for and spent most of my freshman year of college thinking about and ended up as this terrifying love letter to fairy tales and jenny calendar and the complexity of the way she chooses to love people. i love this fic with every fiber of my being and always will.)

2. i still want to be your girl (multi-chapter)

Five years ago, Jenny Calendar ran from Sunnydale and didn't come back. Now, with the First threatening Sunnydale and the Slayer line, she's returned to help stop the apocalypse--but Rupert Giles isn't the man she remembers, and he isn't exactly delighted to have her back in his life again.

(i have a very persistent soft spot for later-seasons giles, but this was one of the few fics where i went “okay but what about battle-hardened jenny” and i’m very proud of the result. it was really fun to think about what might have changed about jenny over the course of five years, and now that i’m thinking about it, i might be really interested in writing a giles pov of this fic at some point? that’s totally a concept to come back to at some point. anyway.)

3. kind of like hydrogen peroxide

Here was the problem: Ripper had no idea how to talk to Jenny without somehow managing to make her want to kill him.

(i do NOT deserve rights if a fic from the ripper au doesn’t make its way onto this list, and this one is my very favorite. i love thinking about dumb teenage giles who pretends to be a rebel but is actually very very soft and very very in love with his equally dumb and genuinely rebellious girlfriend.)

4. spirit-touched

“Thank you, Buffy,” Giles said, “but I would prefer to conduct this research on my own. I’ll be looking into some rather…” He felt himself blushing, and resented it. “Some rather intimate details of ghost-human relations.”

“What does that—oh god, you want to figure out how to have sex with Ms. Calendar,” said Buffy.

(making this the first smutfic i posted was still the most cursed power move i have ever pulled off. anyway that influx of asks in 2016 about ghost jenny and human giles and their sex life inspired this and it ended up being SO funny and SO sweet and i am SO proud of it.)

5. very really married

Giles and Jenny's flights to Sunnydale both stop over in Las Vegas. On the same day. Naturally, a chance encounter leads to a drunken marriage, one that they mutually agree to keep up for appearances.

Which is to say: Giles is going to have to figure out how to hide his fake marriage from his new Slayer (and everyone else) while also hiding his new Slayer from his fake wife (and everyone else). And his complex feelings for Jenny aren't helping anything.

(EVEN NOW, THIS FIC MAKES ME GIGGLE TO THINK ABOUT. i am saving my reread of this particular gem for a rainy day, because it was my love letter to season one and my daydreamy fantasy re: what it would look like if giles and jenny had silly odd-couple energy that really just came from them being fake married and badly hiding it as they fall very deeply in love.)

6. days in goodness spent

This feeling—whatever Giles is feeling—this is bone-deep. He’s never felt it before. He’s been in love before, he’s admired someone before, he’s respected someone before, but this feels like all of those three things held together by something else he can’t quite name. He searches, desperately, for the words that will tell Jenny this, but nothing that has been written can describe the way it feels to be held by her right now.

(In which Rupert Giles gets the chance to fall in love all the way, and it changes him just a little.)

(this one didn’t immediately come to mind when i was drawing up the list, but my brief rereads led me to conclude that it is an underappreciated gem! i’ve written a lot of different takes on giles and jenny’s relationship, but i particularly love calling giles out for idealizing jenny. also i like that this is more abstract than some of my other older pieces, where i really get into the nuts and bolts of wanting to depict Every Single Part of giles and jenny’s relationship trajectory. this one has more fun with the flow of the story.)

7. no one else could heal my pain

“Friday,” Giles echoed.

“Yeah. As an overnight weekend trip to hunt down some books I need.” Ms. Calendar smiled playfully at him. “Isn’t that the kind of thing you’d do for fun anyway?”

(this one was SO recent and SO fun! it’s kind of my love letter to the standalone longfics i consumed voraciously when i was fourteen, because there are some really great older calendiles fics that are just long and winding adventure-y narratives about the two of them goofing off and falling in love. i wanted to echo that here a little bit and it was a delight to write.)

8. myosotis latifolia

Years and years ago, the truth would spill out, and Rupert—in his endless romanticism—would take her hands and tell her she only needed him by her side to feel welcome and loved. But it’s been over a decade since they’ve been that close, and those years have created a distance between them just as insurmountable as the distance between them, now, on the steps leading into his lavish gardens.

(Rupert Giles is an esteemed member of the Watchers' Council, as well as a happily married father. Jenny Calendar knows that that's never been what he wanted.)

(ahaha this one is a big ouch moment but i really love it regardless? i think that giles and jenny are kinda fundamentally incompatible in a lot of ways, and part of the intrigue of their relationship is watching them try and figure out how to compromise and adjust after years of being rigid and inflexible individuals -- giles intellectually, jenny emotionally. so this fic is a lot about that.)

9. the grieving process

After Buffy's death, Giles makes his way to Jenny in LA.

(i don’t know why this one still sticks with me! it just! does! it holds up and i love it and if you wanna read about giles and jenny falling in love in a way that is healthy and authentic without any secrets -- but also obviously very sad -- definitely pick this one up.)

10. decently clothed

“Jenny, are you selecting my wardrobe based solely on what is and isn’t easy to divest me of?”

“…no,” said Jenny.

“That’s not even remotely convincing.”

(i wrote this one during a particularly difficult time in my life, and it was a really special moment for me, because i’d just come out of a period where it had been difficult for me to find the time or emotional energy to write. whenever i return to it, this fic is suffused in that warm and hopeful joy i felt when i posted it and realized that i had not, in fact, lost my touch. so it’s always gonna mean the world to me.

plus it is very silly and sweet! my specialties.)

Naruto Series

The Overworked Hikaku Chronicles - The Overworked Hikaku Chronicles covers how Uchiha Hikaku accidentally saves the world, creates peace amongst the Uchiha and Senju Clans, deals with Konoha being founded like the normal person he is, and also stops being so overworked and tired with a (slightly forced) nap. It starts with crack and humour, grows to speak of self-care and ends gently and with love.

Notes: Since this isn’t a single work, there’s a number of tags. In total, there are ten works with a total of around 31k. There’s one work with a warning for near-death experience, and a number of the fics deal with burnout and stress, but also focussing on moving past that too. Tags commonly featured include: crack, crack treated seriously, fluff and humour, Uchiha Izuna lives, Warring States Period (Naruto), family, family feels, familial love.

The Sea Never Dies

Uzushiogakure is more than a ruin. Her people wander and they hide themselves away, refusing to be who they once were. Uzushio sees this and she refuses to let the world stay that way. Uzushiogakure may have fallen, but Uzushio is far from dead.

Meanwhile, Konoha kills off almost all of the Uchiha Clan, leaving two - Sasuke Uchiha and Toru Uchiha. Sasuke’s survival was meant to happen. Toru’s survival was due to luck, (and something more, something much, much bigger than luck).

The world is not safe or nice or good. It hasn’t been such for a while. That’s alright though. Toru can make things happen with his own two hands and his words. He can change his world, even if it isn’t the entire world. Toru doesn’t like the whole world that much anyway.

Notes: Like the previous series, this one has too many tags to tag individually. This series is still ongoing and is near the end, though, updating frequently. In total, there’s about 600k words at the moment (and an extra 70k of extra AUs and whatnot) so it is massive. I would argue it’s all about found family, love, hope, building a life out of the ashes, and learning to live for yourself/living on when nothing is left.

There are scenes of torture too, which aren’t explict but are warned about too. Further questions can be asked and I’ll be willing to answer. Overall, this series definitely isn’t dark however. (Oh, and some bad guys die, so character death too, I guess?)

Additional Notes: It’s a lot of words so I can totally understand not wanting to read it. So there are a few AUs that can be read without reading the main series. One is see hope rise with the tide and the other is Desert Oasis.

It’s very flattering that you’re this interested in my writing. I already sent you a private message about the other parts of this ask so this is all commentary. I had way more to say than I thought but it was fascinating to re-visit these passages and realize some things I missed before, and just expose myself I guess haha.

Before I start this is one of two warnings. I hardly ever get to talk about my writing in depth so I’m going to be indulgent. In other words, this will be lengthy. I’m putting it all under a read more.

Fatal Ties Director’s Commentary

Chapter 1:

Firstly, I’ve edited this chapter on my own and it reads completely different now. No, I will not be posting the edited chapters here. I’ve change the pov and given each character a different name in order to make it a full, original mafia story. I have not gone back and read this story in months at this point though so the thoughts that spring to mind should be interesting/informative if not entertaining.Also of note real quick, there will be dark and less than savory topics mentioned; namely violence, child abuse, human trafficking, nonbinary erasure, drugs, and sexual violence. None ad nauseam, but they are themes strung throughout this story and I feel it’s important you’re warned before continuing. If you are sensitive to these or think you may be triggered please do not force yourself to read this. Most of it is in chapter 5, but still. That being said, it won’t be all doom and gloom so let’s just jump into it.

Typically I enjoy starting off a story with dialogue or an action. Here, it was dialogue. Baekhyun entering the Boss’ manor to meet them. I think the best starting point for a story is the inciting incident for the main plot-line. Many mainstream scripts are structured so you see what the main characters lives are like on the regular before the balance is upset, but in writing I feel that bogs down the first few chapters so I skip it. This is fanfiction for fun so who cares about setup. It’s Baekhyun. There’s an arranged marriage. You know the drill.

For “Fatal Ties” the Boss has been working on this truce for years, but the main plot of the telling is them actually meeting Baekhyun, and how that changes them as their relationship grows. The Boss doesn’t like the idea of marrying a stranger. Let alone someone from the rival syndicate. Who would? Baekhyun, as they find out rather quickly. He’s too amorous about it all. They don’t trust Baekhyun. They believe he’s a honeypot the other boss sent to spy on them. I mean, of course they think that. Baekhyun is clumsily flirting and overly flattering. Spitting compliments out excitedly at every turn even though it’s clear he knows nothing about them. Calling them princess and doll. They’ve worked too hard for too long, and sacrificed too much to suffer being mis-gendered in their own home by some immature idiot. They don’t suffer being looked down on or erased anymore. They will be recognized for who they are, and as an equal to every other mafia boss.

Their rage boils inside them with every slip. The moment the Boss grabs Baekhyun’s collar is when I tried to set up how precarious this all is. That threat isn’t empty. The Boss will kill him and the rest of his family if this contract doesn’t work out. They’d rather just sign a contract though. Less work and no sloppy transition times as mentioned in the next chapter.

Speaking of which, this contract isn’t legally binding. It’s more an honor contract than anything. That’s why Baekhyun is there to marry the Boss. It’s really just another business deal to the Boss. That’s how real mafias joined their houses in the past. I made this more clear by adding this line to the Boss’ dialogue in the edit: “Also contracts in our…realm of business aren’t legally binding so it’s insurance. Symbolic more than anything, really, but that’s that.”

As a side note, I ended up doing far more research than I anticipated for this. Most of the knowledge I acquired hasn’t been utilized yet, but I refuse to think I wasted hours of my life reading business, money laundering and fraud law for nothing. Limited liability, shell corporations, deficits, ugh it’s giving me a headache just thinking about all the jargon I had to sift through.

Okay back to the thing. I made a conscious decision to describe the Boss’ manor as such. Their dad built up the drug business. They’re just tweaking it to be more profitable. It hasn’t been revealed yet, but their dad wanted to surround himself with expensive things to feel more important and successful since he started from near nothing. The Boss, on the other hand, doesn’t enjoy living in this big house. It’s too cold and empty. They want to live in a normal home further from the city and have their only worry be about if their garden is getting enough sunlight. A peaceful life. That won’t happen unless a truce is called between them and Baekhyun’s family. It truly means everything to them that this marriage go well.

Had someone tell me it was so satisfying when the Boss smashed that mug over Baekhyun’s head. That felt good. I figured that’s the first major tell of their character. They get annoyed at being mis-gendered and harassed, but instead of leaving or yelling or anything a regular person might do, they lash out with violence. They were raised in the mafia where mistakes were atoned with blood. You ever seen “John Wick 3”? Fucking love Keanu Reeves. Some of my favorite action movies. Anyway, sort of like that. The Boss has very little mercy in them. Or patience. Bad combination. But for good reason. Any small slip-up could result in life in prison, so yeah.

The other major tell of character was in what the Boss did right after. Cleaning up the broken mug. They take responsibility for what they knew was a mistake. They clean up their own mess. They immediately know to call for Yixing the doctor and calmly explain things to Baekhyun when he wakes up. I intentionally never had them say “sorry.” They admit they were wrong to hit him, but they don’t apologize. Even so, the moment Baekhyun sees a glimmer of a chance for approval from the Boss he jumps in to help cover it up. Knowing that if his parents found out they hit him any peace that might’ve been forming would be tenuous at best. More likely, his dad would take it as a personal attack and retaliate.

Then right at the end Baekhyun shows some kind of guilt and/or concern for causing their hand injury and it throws off the Boss’ instincts. Suddenly he’s willing to shoulder the blame and offering to help. Being respectful. A total flip from before. It makes the Boss harden their guard more. Proving he shouldn’t be trusted. Or, at least, they can’t entertain the possibility that he’s trustworthy. Not yet. Still, he’s saving them significant stress by lying to his parents about his head, so the Boss is much more gentle in turning him down before going to bed.

Chapter 2:

Despite what it looks like, this sex scene was not put in gratuitously. It’s very, very important setup for just about everything else, and it’s filled with foreshadowing. I knew it would be important to get a glimpse at the Boss’ secret affair in it’s normality before it got twisted a few chapters later. It shows a peek into the Boss’ hidden personal desires. They crave real affection. Their issues prevent them from actually believing that Kyungsoo loves them, but deep down they hope it’s true. They’re wary of entertaining those hopes however, because that means they could have a weakness for others to exploit. See literally any secret agent plot-line ever. The loved ones are threatened first and used as leverage for the villains. So the Boss denies that it’s anything more than physical.

I tried to convey the timeline a bit better later, but just so it’s clear Baekhyun meets the Boss three years after they’ve taken over from their dad. So Kyungsoo and them met back then and very painfully slowly the tension grew. I will admit to having fun imagining this bit in my own head just cause I love sexual tensions that build until they break and it’s this massive burst of passion. The Boss doing their best to keep everything professional, turning Kyungsoo down when he tried to talk to them, until finally they caved. Realizing after having a few conversations with him that, “fuck…I’ve liked him this whole time.” They’re around each other literally all the time. A bond had formed without them even noticing. Once it was noticed it took yet another year of Kyungsoo flirting and finding excuses to touch them, like, on the base of their spine, their hair, their hand, etc, before their will broke and they gave in. They’re both horrible at communicating it, but they do care for one another. Maybe at varying degrees, but they care. I hope that was made clear in this chapter.

Of note, Kyungsoo’s immediate hatred of Baekhyun, the fact he brought it up after the Boss had already switched off their brain to be submissive, the pet names he uses, the fact that the call for silence at the end is explained from the Boss’ perspective, and when he brings up the idea of wiping out Baekhyun’s family without a contract there’s this sentence: “He was back on this nonsense again.”

The theme here is control, if you didn’t notice. The Boss enjoying a space where they’re safe out of control, Kyungsoo trying to convince them not to give up sole control of their business by partnering, etc. That’s not all the foreshadowing, but I don’t want to make the plot too easy to predict by giving them away.

The last few paragraphs are the deep dive into the Boss’ motivations and reasoning. I think it’s also the second time Baekhyun’s family’s business is alluded to, but I’ll reveal that in a later chapter commentary when it’s possible for the reader to have deduced it on their own. It also shows in the last few lines where the Boss’ priorities are. The contract is number one. They will sacrifice everything for it. Even what may be their only chance at something close to love.

Chapter 3:

This is the second time I’ve written the main character eating eggs on toast. It’s delicious, and I lack the creativity to describe different foods. It’s just to pace the scene with actions because they’re eating instead of just sitting around. If one day my works are looked at by English professors they’ll probably say it symbolizes the Boss’ practical, fast-paced lifestyle. It doesn’t. I just like eggs on toast.

The fact Baekhyun doesn’t lie about snooping is the first big revealing thing showing that he doesn’t really want to. He doesn’t care about being caught because he just doesn’t care that much. He makes the remark about firing the guards posted outside his door as a joke. Ha-ha I walked around your house doing nothing with no supervision. He doesn’t realize how grave a mistake that was. He doesn’t realize that remark was the cause of two lives being ruined by the Boss. He will understand later because, as you learn later, he listens in on the Boss’ meeting with those guards via bug he put in their blazer. I have not written the effect of that yet, but it did affect Baekhyun. There’s a very clear butterfly effect from this one small choice.

Next he tries to get Kyungsoo to talk. He plays it off as trying to get to know the head of security. Needling the Boss to try and prove his hunch that it was Kyungsoo he heard them fucking the night before. I didn’t bother insinuating he had suspicions about anyone else because Baekhyun is smart and he knows that 1) Yixing is the only other person he’s met so far and that wasn’t his voice. 2) Kyungsoo is at the Boss’ side all day, and he hasn’t spoken around Baekhyun yet.

When he sees the Boss is about to leave he uses the name “kitten.” Baiting them by antagonizing them. Switching his tactics. The day before he had played up the whole “I’m here to do what you want” thing and now he’s realized he should be more domineering. He doesn’t always succeed because that’s not entirely in his nature, but here it sort of works to, as John Mulaney and JJ Bittenbinder would say, “throw them off their rhythm.”

I amuse myself by adding in little quirks to the Boss. Each time I describe a room it’s meant to be pictured immaculate and modern with everything in perpendicular lines. Showing that they’re a little peculiar about style and cleanliness. Anal retentive one might even say. All their clothes are tailored, most of them are suits, the mass of cabinets in the kitchen so the counters are clear, etc. Another side note, this is set in the 2000’s mostly for law reasons. Some didn’t exist until later which made what the Boss does near impossible to get away with, but I wanted cell phones and I’m picky about realism like that. So 2000’s decor. Black and white with pops of color in the decorations, chrome, clean finishes. I work in interior design so I was a little particular about some stuff for no reason other than my own amusement like the big kitchen with white countertops, and the blue and grey paisley wing-back chairs. When I edit this chapter I’m going to go into more detail on the rug though to give a clearer picture when the blood ruins it. Which really did cause the Boss dismay just like the bloody hand wrappings. For cleanliness but also they don’t like conducting business at home outside of paperwork and research. I thought it showed more about their character that they were upset over the bloody wrappings rather than the dead body and such.

My favorite part about writing the Boss’ character is how they’re constantly in a shade of darker grey. Everyone operates in shades of grey, but I love it when I see characters that are closer to the black and yet you’re still cheering for them. They’re morally corrupt and objectively not a good person, but you still like them. They’re still the hero, so to speak, of the story. That’s what I’m trying to achieve with the Boss. Back to “John Wick.” He’s a good example. So is Loki. They’re mass murderers, but we as an audience still love them because they feel like real people. Their motivations garner sympathy, and it’s their methods that are skewed. I love the challenge of threading that line between the Boss being the protagonist and villain simultaneously. Referring back to a line Kyungsoo had; they may need to be protected from themselves. Disney villain style I guess. Their actions cause their own doom. Not necessarily because the hero did anything. Gaston, Clayton, The Evil Queen, Frollo, Scar, etc, etc. You get it. I love that. That’s not giving away the ending, by the way. I don’t like following formulas too much. I honestly haven’t even decided on an ending yet. There’s lots of options. I’ll decide when I get there.

Anyway, this chapter was my attempt at showing more of that dark grey for the boss. They could have just as easily let the guards off with a warning, or broken a finger or something, but instead they went for the extreme. “Their offense was too great” as the chapter says. All they did was let Baekhyun out of his room, you might say. The Boss doesn’t see it that way. They don’t know what Baekhyun did unsupervised all night. But somehow he already found out about one of the few secrets that could topple everything out of balance. Their affair. Not that his family is sensitive over infidelity or anything, but it was what the Boss was afraid of; Kyungsoo being used against them. A weakness. Baekhyun found their weakness just like that, and they thought the reason was the guards letting him out. If Baekhyun hadn’t gotten restless legs, or just not teased the Boss about walking around that morning, they probably wouldn’t have checked the security footage, and those guards would’ve survived.

Instead, the Boss outright kills one and mutilates the other. Framing him so he’d go to prison. They enjoy taking out their frustration on the guard. In their mind he deserves it for being careless.

Had someone comment a reference to Yixing with the whole “act of kindness, act of cruelty. Balance” thing, but that was actually inspired by a scene in season 2 of Fargo. Although both people end up dying in that show. Love that show. Inspired this whole thing actually. I know I’ve mentioned that somewhere else before, but it’s true. It’s one of my favorites it’s so brilliant. I don’t think this will ever be up to par with that, but I’m okay with that.

Point being, consequences. Baekhyun’s choices had a ripple effect, and they continue past this chapter.

Chapter 4:

Obviously you find this out later, but Baekhyun was listening to the Boss and Kyungsoo on those headphones. Not music.

The Boss gives in to talking with Baekhyun in the car because they find it cute he’s acting like a puppy. Also because he might let something else slip. Oh, also, the line about them lying about nothing being wrong was them being worried about Baekhyun blabbering about their affair with Kyungsoo.

Baekhyun attempts to have a normal conversation, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. All the Boss can talk about is work. If you’ve ever watched “Hot Fuzz” I imagine this interaction playing something like the first day Nicholas and Danny are together. It’s not as sharp as in that movie, but the feeling of a less experienced person questioning this serious person with the least serious questions. Baekhyun sees this as a game or a movie more than something real and dangerous. He only heard the meeting in the last chapter, after all. He doesn’t realize yet that the gunshot killed that guard. He’s watched his mom get married to a mafia leader and live rich like an actress. He’s naive of the price it takes to stay comfortable like that. It’s still a movie where people are killed off screen and there are no major repercussions. Even in his answer about the knife he says he would kiss them as if it were some James Bond film.

I tried to make it clear, but just to spell it out, Baekhyun is the rival leader’s step-son. He has two step-brothers from the rival leaders’ two previous marriages–Minseok and Jongin. So he didn’t grow up in this dark, depraved world like these other characters. He was folded in at an older age. He’s more the black sheep of the family because he’s not blood related. That’s why he says he was happy to marry the Boss. But it’s still seeing through this movie lens. He doesn’t know what it really means to learn how to run a syndicate, and the Boss sees that. They scoff at him and can’t take him seriously.

At the meeting the reason the Boss wants to crack the mask of Minseok is to feel out his real personality. In their mind, every lawyer is an actor who writes a script before trial and reads it for an audience–the jury. They wanted to see Minseok when not acting. When they see he has a spine, oh buddy, they would’ve dropped Baekhyun for Minseok right then and there if it was their choice.

Oh, yeah, and they’re totally straight up manipulating Baekhyun. Using that nickname as faux affection. Letting his family think Baekhyun’s honeypot skills were working, and Baekhyun that his regular charm was getting them to like him.Baekhyun’s mom mentioning they operate hotels, yes, interesting. She’s also in fantasyland if you can tell. Planning their wedding as if they were in love and not out of business arrangement. She’s not naive to the real purpose of the meeting, but her focus and excitement is in the wedding which is why everyone’s just kind of letting her do all the planning.

The last thing I’ll say on this chapter is from part of my response to someone asking about the Boss’ goals. They want to gain customers, profit and influence. Expand their drug empire. It’s a smart business move. Simple as that. If you want more detail, then they want symbiosis. It’s a hassle having to work an underground drug ring when there’s cops, let alone another gang out for their blood. Getting Baekhyun’s family to stop the violence against their group and help is the only smart move in their eyes.

Chapter 5:

Oofda strap in this one gets real dark. This is the chapter most of those warnings at the beginning were for so feel free to skip to the next chapters commentary if you want.

Yes the lapel grab was an intentional mirror of the one Baekhyun did at breakfast in chapter two. Just felt like it. No special reason.

An extreme disconnect from human lives? Hotels? Even the Boss thinks it’s wrong? What the fuck does Baekhyun’s family do? Congrats if you’ve figured it out already. The major giveaway is in a bit though.

The whole, “I like things that are beautiful and strong” thing is a reference to a video game character named Zevran who’s a pansexual assassin and one of the loves of my life. Life-changing, that dialogue. Perfectly worded how my pansexuality felt. It meant a lot at the time so it’s stuck with me. When I edit this though I’m gonna change it around a bit. It’s too close to the actual game dialogue right now.

When the Boss retreats it’s because they felt breathless. They’re in denial about being afraid, but it’s cause they’ve never felt attraction like that before. Sincere fondness, and it went both ways. They actually felt something for Baekhyun. So they counteract it to the extreme and pretend to be emotionless and dismissive. To the point of being cruel when speaking about him to Kyungsoo as if he were a dog that needed to be locked in its kennel.

The throwing things is just Baekhyun being petty. He is angry, but not super mad. Enough to want to make the Boss hear his anger. Not enough to keep it up for long though.

More foreshadowing once Kyungsoo comes in. There’s been other stuff in between too. I like reading it and cackling in villainy because I know all the secrets.

Now let’s take a moment while reading the first part of this sex scene and just reflect on how Baekhyun is listening to everything happening.

Okay sorry let’s actually continue. I’m delaying the inevitable here.

This section was hard to write, and I know it’s hard to read too, but it’s important to the story to have it described. Not only for awareness, as I have experienced something very similar and didn’t know what was wrong, or why I felt the way I did afterward, until much much later. But also because this is a major event that drastically changes how the Boss interacts with just about everyone, and their relationships. I know there are stories out there that use sexual violence as a plot device, and I’ve tried my best not to do that. I hope I’ve handled it with sensitivity and care. Being mindful of how certain things are worded and such. If you don’t take anything else away from this I do want you to know this: this is consensual. It is not rape. The Boss is just as confused about what happened as I’m sure some of you are. They’re deeply conflicted about it, but they push it down and ignore it at first. That’s the point. Shades of grey. Conflict. Revelation of characters. Okay, on with the rest of it.

The consent. The unreadable twinkle in his eye. If it wasn’t obvious, Kyungsoo gets off on having control over the Boss. This possessiveness is turning into a poison. Hearing that they want him unequivocally ends up being the toes hanging off the edge of the cliff before the plummet.

“He took what he wanted from you and you gave willingly.” That’s the line that explains why the Boss doesn’t do anything when Kyungsoo starts going too far with the pain levels. Gripping their thighs too hard. He already gave them the tension release and satisfaction. They were reciprocating, they thought. They felt safe with Kyungsoo. That’s why their trysts worked. They trusted Kyungsoo to keep them safe at all times. They could let go and not think, but for some reason that night turns out to be different.

When Kyungsoo screws his eyes shut, it’s the point of no return. No matter what they did from then on it would end the same way. He’s blocking out the expression on their face. He’s trying his damnest to focus on finishing. He’s lost control. As stated, some conflict is making him frustrated, and he’s taking it too far. He should have stopped, but something makes him keep going.

When they hold Kyungsoo closer, they’re in denial. And they’ll stay in denial that anything wrong had happened for a while. Kyungsoo slows at this point and there’s hope that he’ll come back to himself. He moves them into a more comfortable position and removes his hands from their bruising grip. Kissing their neck and chest even. The pain when he thrusts inside is more layover from the previous actions than rough treatment in that moment. They could still call the night rough play. Let’s call this the good timeline.

I still have so many emotions when his hand clamps tighter on their mouth and he mutters, “almost there.” The desperation and pain and guilt laced through his tone in my head breaks my heart a bit.

The Boss is not a fragile person. They’ve always been able to exert some amount of control in their life. But when they can’t stop Kyungsoo suddenly they feel helpless. The person they trusted is hurting them, and it’s not even malicious. They can’t even think through all the pain.

After Kyungsoo finishes neither of them have time to process what happened before Baekhyun screams. By the emotions flickering on Kyungsoo’s face though, it’s implied he knows he fucked up very, very badly and is experiencing clarity.

I really just added in the Baekhyun struggling with guards in his underwear thing for some levity in the transition between heavy things. He could’ve been dressed and just yelling from his doorway, sure, but that’s no fun.

Baekhyun ends up confessing to planting multiple listening devices after convincing the Boss to get Kyungsoo to leave. But instead of their first thought being one of anger or worry over leaked secrets, the Boss thinks about his confession. It’s the second time this chapter they’ve thought about Baekhyun in a positive light when there were more pressing matters.

“I know the difference between playing rough and abuse. I know what real pain sounds like. Trust me.“ And, "Kyungsoo is much more suited for working for my family. You know that right?” are the two biggest clues about what Baekhyun’s family does. Have you guessed yet? Locked in your answer? It’s prostitution and sex trafficking.

When Baekhyun says he was terrified hearing their screams it’s because he’s scarred from his step-dad’s "hotel business.” Saying that Kyungsoo is more suited for his family’s work implies things about his character that the Boss refuses to question. However Baekhyun crying is also out of relief that he didn’t find them more severely injured. With his family he was powerless to help the people they extorted and manipulated and took advantage of. He was able to do something here, though. He was able to scream and kick and call attention to it, even if he was a little late. He was able to help. Which is why he so readily agrees to get rid of the bugs to get the Boss to call Yixing.

Right before he leaves he contemplates trying to kiss them. His relief doesn’t overpower his smarts though, and he thinks better of it. I think the Boss would’ve called Yixing anyway, but they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to also get something from Baekhyun.

Chapter 6:

I am so…emotionally exhausted from that last chapter, but there’s not much left at this point so let’s finish.

Jongdae calling himself Greased Lightning. Just felt like referencing Grease that day I guess. Wanted a dumb code name no one actually uses.

“I’d call you a genius, but I’m in the room.” Lazy reference to Sherlock. Should take it out.

“Opening him up balls to brain.” Honestly that’s just straight up out of Game of Thrones. I loved the line too much haha. Took inspiration from Petyr Baelish on the bit about killing an innocent man with the guilty one to throw off suspicion too.

I actually did math the figure out the dimensions of the tie grid cause I’m like that I guess.

Originally the Boss was gonna reward him by just spending more time with him, but after the…incident, they decided to teach him a bit too. They realized he was smart and amicable to change.

“They know, and they know when to bail” is actually a reference to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood with something Olivier said up on the North wall.

The “there are plenty worse than you” realization hits a lot harder knowing his family does what they do. It still gets me reading that line. He’s been through so much.

Pretty self explanatory on why the Boss doesn’t give in to their desires about Baekhyun. He’s too submissive still. They want someone to challenge them. Baekhyun gives them a glimpse at the possibility he’s capable, but it disappears just as fast.

As I was describing the city they’re driving home from I was thinking of Chicago, but as someone who’s visited many major cities it could be any of them really. In my head it’s Northern California though, mostly because 1) there’s plenty of stories out there now about mafia in New York or Chicago or Las Vegas. 2) they have history with mafia in real life that moved up there from the L.A. areas. 3) lots of coastal cities up that way where Baekhyun’s family could be doing business. Let’s not even get into all the organized crime in San Francisco and San Jose. Of course for this fanfiction version it could be in South Korea who knows. I only know American law so that’s how I think in terms of writing the Boss avoiding cops and what-not.

The fact the chapter didn’t end with the ties being purchased should’ve been the warning that something bad was gonna happen. This chapter was going too well, and there’s still no major conflict. Enter gunmen.

Also side note, I always end up doing way more research than necessary on almost every story. Spent a few hours reading about and looking at videos of bulletproof cars being shot with different calibers and doing 180’s and stuff to more accurately write this chase. I just like doing research I suppose. Definitely love learning new things. I’ll go down several google deep dives on any given subject during a month. It’s fun learning new things. The last one I did was a deep dive into fashion in the 1700’s which I think I’ve decided to use in the next requested story. They didn’t ask for it to be historical, but now I want to write about elaborate dresses so there.

“It was lucky.” It wasn’t. I can’t explain why yet though.

Chapter 7:

Y'all ever experienced stitches before? The scars are hard to get rid of. Okay that’s my commentary on that.

Actually no. If Baekhyun had gone to a legitimate doctor they probably would’ve used glue so the scar would be faint, but mafia doctor. Okay moving on.

There are handguns that hold more than seven rounds, but I couldn’t pass up referencing “John Wick 2.”

“I don’t know. Were you thinking, ‘holy shit holy shit, I just almost got shot’?” is a reference to the movie “Get Smart.” Y'all seeing a pattern yet? haha. Mostly just wanted a joke there. It sprung to mind. Although I do have a few lists with lines or words that I’ve seen and written down to use later, then I try to work them in somehow. It’s a dangerous method. It’s breed whole chapters and stories before. But I have a horribly inconsistent memory. Gossamer is a good example. Saw that word used somewhere, went, “ooh I like that word”, wrote it in the list, then used it in this chapter. While we’re on writing technique, I also really love using alliteration to emphasize certain sentences or pretty-up descriptions. It started because I was writing a character that talks in prose and poetry, and he does that all the time, but I liked how it sounded so I just kinda kept doing it. That character is Cole from Dragon Age by the way.

The rest of this is just setting up the mystery. Who in the car was the target? Who was shooting? Who’s the mole? Is there even a mole, or is someone simply following them? Will Baekhyun keep pushing for answers? Will the Boss cause the trouble they’re trying to avoid by retreating inward? Will any of them get killed? How could Baekhyun’s decision near the beginning possibly butterfly more?

Interesting, yes, hm. Time for more sinister cackling.

Drarry

A Fragile Web - wand bond hogwarts 8th year repair - Ah, an aging wip with 20k that’s going no where. Good to see you again, old friend. Looking mighty fine with that thick coating of dust you’re sporting. New Year’s Promises - Another aging wip that’s nearly all written that I can’t seem to finish arg! Maybe this year will be the year?? Who knows, all I know is that I keep meaning to finish it so I can release it sometime between Dec-March every year I attempt to get it done. *sweats loudly* Post War WWW - This was going to be my HD Big Bang project until I had to drop because of my work schedule. I had some really fun stuff planned with it, especially Draco working with tinkering with magical objects and charms spells. Snapchat Sexting - Ohhhhh I need to finish this!!! Dang I started this in like Feb and forgot all about it, but it’s the usual whacky concept of tech comes to the wizarding world as a vehicle for Drarry to sext via social media hahaha. Harry is very Shook™️ in this little fic. Accidental Marriage Bond - Oh nooo they’re accidentally married and bound magically oh noooooo. Kidfic Adoption Partners - Probably my fave of my wips that I haven’t had much time to work on, the idea is that drarry are very close business partners that are mistaken for partner-partners when draco decides he wants to adopt. Grimmauld Place is Sick??? - Idk what to call this one hahaha, but it’s basically your run of the mill oh no Harry isn’t sure what’s up with GP and Draco Malfoy is His Only Hope at Finding Answers.

Banquet AU Canon Diverge - Omg this was my big project at the beginning of the year that I put on pause after almost 30k because it’s only 3 chapters in and it’s already so big. Basically just a big YOI canon divergence after the banquet and clothes sharing and social media. Yuuri wears Victor’s Olympic RU jacket and I get a little emosh every time I think about it :’))))

FWB Klance - Probably what it says on the tin tbh Waxplay Klance - Hnnggg my candle-moment fic. Just needs one scene to be complete, note to self please go back and finish this. Let Me Take a Bite Out of You - lovebug/fakedating/soulmate/garrison au - A wip I started and even posted ch 1 of last year because I’m a monster and every time I get a comment from a reader hoping the next chapter is coming I cower under a blanket. It’s not abandoned, though, I swear. I just need to untangle the plot and write the damn thing. It’s a biiiig epic with conspiracy, a race against time, and everything ending up just as it should when the series timeline starts.

Zutara Accidental Bond Post War - A maaaassive outline for a story picking up right where the Agni Kai with Azula ends and the events of that fight cause a spirit bond to manifest in Katara and Zuko so that they’re tied together and can hear each other’s heartbeat. In the midst of putting the Fire Nation back together they have to embark on a journey to the spirit world to find out what happened to them and if they can undo it. Haikyuu!! If you enjoyed Phoenix Repair Services then you might like this one, it’s a pretty similar concept of house repair going totally wrong with a handyman from the protag’s past to fix the mess, only now there’s a ghost involved in the mix haha! Also it’s tentatively set in Boston because haunted New England houses are a Vibe™️. It’s got a persnickety ghost and a snarky protag who refers to himself as “””emotionally efficient””” because he’s the picture of good mental health 😹 😹 There are 12 other wips that have gathered in this folder but I’ll save the deets for later, this one is the most fleshed out at this point.

Sooo that’s me and my writing folder right now hahaha, someone send a shovel so I can dig myself out, yeah?

“Jared, this is serious! My daughter was supposed to be married today, and now this happens!” Cata hissed as I scoffed a laugh, running one of my hands through my hair in frustration.

“Do you think I planned on this happening?! No! I planned on marrying the women I love more than life itself, and now she supposedly has another soulmate?!” I hissed before turning my attention back to the bedroom where Y/N was resting with a… Hideous black rose resting on her chest.

“How did this happen... She was so in love with you-”

“And she still is! There has to be a mistake.. Unless there’s some special treatment where you can have two soulmates, I have no idea what’s going on!” I threw an arm over my head as Cata rested her forehead against the back of her hand, a look of concern on her face suddenly pulled.

“That’s.. Jared having two soulmates has never been heard of! And my daughter’s not about to be the first.” Cata spat as she glared angrily, my own blood boiling at the mere thought of someone else trying to take Y/N..

“Then why the hell is my wife in there with a black rose bleeding out of her chest cavity!?” I whispered angrily as she sighed through her nose, chewing on her lip as she glanced into the bedroom. Y/N laid on the soft bed with her hair forming almost a halo around her while her dress stayed sprawled out.

“There has to be an explanation for this like I said, no one’s ever heard of someone having two soulmates… But, Jared what if-”

“No.”

“Jared..” Cata’s voice was just a whisper, but I quickly cut her off.

“No, I refuse to believe that my wife isn’t my soulmate!” I hissed through clenched teeth, feeling my heart thumping hard against my chest as I tried to catch my breath. Cata just stared at me with pain glittering behind the angered tears forming in her dark eyes, she shook her head before sighing.

“Jared, I’m not saying that she isn’t your soulmate. I’m saying.. I’m saying that you might not be hers.” She continued her thoughts from earlier, using her hands to gesture between the bedroom door and myself as I felt my heart drop to the bottom of my feet.

“That.. That doesn’t make any sense! She’s mine and I’m hers, that’s how soulmates work! I would die for her, and she would die for me!”

“It’s what happened with her and Jensen, Jared! She fell in love with him, and he did too but for only a few moments - now, look at him, dating that women Danneel,” she paused with a huff of air before continuing. “I’m not saying she doesn’t love you, it’s apparent she does, but maybe.. Just maybe you’re not meant to be.”

I stared at who I thought was going to be my savior. The women that would go in and yank that black rose and its roots from her daughter, and save our marriage.. Save our fates. But I was wrong..

“You’re wrong,” I shook my head while stating this as she looked at me with furrowed brows and a pursed lip. “You’re wrong, you’re wrong, you have to be wrong! I love that woman with all of my being! All of my soul! Everything that I have I would give for her that’s how much I love her! She can’t be taken away from me, not by anyone!” I shouted as Cata took a few steps back, alarmed by my sudden anger towards the situation.

I had gone to her for help, but all she is doing it making it worse… Angering me more than I need to be right now; I needed a level-head..

“Jared.. Calm down, you’re going to wake up, Y/N! She’s already in pain, don’t wake her and let her see you like this..”

“I want to find whoever her soulmate is. I want them here, and I want them now.” I bit gently while Cata looked at me with wide-eyes, she must think I’m insane and honestly… I feel a little bit mad.

- Next Morning; Y/N’s POV -

I woke the next morning with a dull pain dwelling in my chest; the area where the black rose was now… Empty. The only thing left there was dried blood and a few dried and shriveled up petals from the inked flower.

“So.. It wasn’t just a bad dream,” I whispered out loud as I sighed, pushing myself up from the soft mattress I realized I was still in my wedding dress. That’s right. I never got to walk down the aisle..

“Y/N? Baby, you up?” Jared’s voice suddenly filled the room, causing me to jump as I turned towards the bathroom door, seeing him standing with a towel lose around his waist, and water droplets still dripping down his face from his long chestnut hair.

“Uh, yeah.. I’m up. And I’m assuming that we didn’t get to have our big day yesterday because of me..?” I sighed with a groan as Jared moved closer, stopping at the edge of the bed as he moved to sit on the edge next to me.

“Uh, yeah.. We’re technically not married yet, but that’s okay! We can get married when you’re feeling better, okay?” Jared’s grin was large and bright, but it felt.. Strange to see him smile like this. Like he was hiding something.

“What.. What happened yesterday anyway? I mean, I remember having a large black rose sprout out of my chest and now, it’s just.. Gone.”

“Honey, you just need to know that.. That I made it go away, okay? I made sure you were safe from anything, and I took care of it.” He smiled whilst whispering this, his large hands had moved from the bed to my own, wrapping them with his warmth as I allowed a tired smile to grow on my lips.

“Oh, uh.. Alright, well have you seen mom? I wanted to talk to her about the-”

“She went home. After making sure you were alright and safe, she flew back home..” Jared quickly answered as I went slightly wide-eyed, along with clearly dumbfounded..

“She.. Went home? Even after learning that.. That I had a black rose? That it didn’t disappear when I saw you?” I questioned more as I slowly slipped my hands out of Jared’s tight grip before slowly inching away, hoping he wouldn’t notice the small movements.

“Y/N, she flew home because she wanted too. It’s not like someone held a gun to her head to make her leave-” Jared chuckled at the small comment as I went again wide-eyed as I swallowed gently, feeling my heart jump quickly against my chest.

“Jared.. What did you do?”

He furrowed his brows and gently tilted his head as if he were some confused puppy.. But he wore a sinister grin.

“Babygirl, whatever I did, I did it for you! For us! I love you, and you love me, right!?” Jared gently laughed as he pushed himself up from the bed causing me to move to the other side, even if the dress did limit my movements slightly I knew… I just knew I had to get to the door.

“Jared, baby, just tell me what you did, okay? And.. And of course, I love you.. You’re my soulmate, aren’t you?” I sheepishly grinned as my bare feet gently moved against the carpet, the puffiness of the bottom of my dress hiding it well.

Jared furrowed his brows as he rolled his large shoulders back, standing straighter which gave him more of an intimidating stature. His muscles flexed as he narrowed his darkening eyes at me like he was stalking prey.

Darting my eyes to the door and back to him, I had to make a decision - even if that meant hurting him in the process. Taking a deep breath, I turned my body towards the door and pushed off with my left foot as I gripped tightly onto the fluff in front of me, trying to keep it from tripping me up.

I hadn’t realized how quickly Jared’s long legs could move as I felt just the ghost of his hand trying to dig itself into the back of my dress. Feeling his sudden hot breath on my neck, I tried to dodge his grabs until I was tugged backward. My dress coming up in the back as I yelped, my front slamming into the carpet as I growled, kicking my legs so he couldn’t wrap his hands around my ankles.

“Jared! Jared, this isn’t you! What the hell!?” I screamed as I fought back the tears blurring my vision, my heart in my throat and the rushing of my blood in my ears as I dug my fingers into the white carpet. The pain in my chest from earlier coming slowly back as I allowed some shouts to leave my lips.

“I love you, Y/N! You can’t leave me for that… For that fake! Whoever they are, they’re not your soulmate! I am! And I would do anything for you, haven’t I proved that?!” Jared shouted as I was suddenly flipped from on my stomach to my back flushed against the carpet, as I tried to put my arms between us I continued to scream and shout at him, some words not eligible.

My arms were suddenly pinned beside my head as he stared down at me with his once beautiful sunflower eyes that were now ridden with… Jealousy. Hate. Yet there was also hidden passion.. And all of those scared me.

“Jared, let me go! Let me go, please! Please, please, please!” I cried as tears cascaded down my cheeks, my jaw clenched as my teeth clicked tightly together. He dipped his head down and pressed his wet lips against my throat, sucking at my raging pulse as I tried to squirm away.

“I want to show you that I can love you! I want to show you that I’m loyal! I want you to see just how much I would give up for you.. And even, how much I would take…” His voice was raspy as he nipped with his teeth at my pulse, moving to press his lips to my cheeks and lips as I grunted and tried to turn my head away.

“You’re.. You’re insane, Jared.. What happened to you!? What made you snap?!” I screamed as I felt this pain erupt in my chest as I glanced down, seeing the once old wound from the black rose opening again but this time it… It was blue? A deep, rich blue even. Then it appeared - a bright, and deep colored Blue Iris.

Furrowing my brows just a bit as the deep blue with specks of yellow had drawn my attention away, but for an only a few seconds as I felt Jared’s weight shift causing me to scream out again while trying to wirth and rip away from his grasp.

“Jared, stop it! Stop it!” My screams just echoed and became pleads as the man I once loved, the man I once treasured, now became this.. This predator like man who’s only instinct is to keep.. I didn’t want to stay, I didn’t want to be kept here against my will! I’ve gotta fight.. And I’ve gotta win..

Swallowing my spit in a large lump, I allowed the tears that had built up to drip down the corners of my eyes as I tried to throw his hands off of my wrists, to get some kind of upper hand on him but it’s useless.. His hands wound somehow tighter against my skin, most likely bruising it as I just laid there.. Limply. My mind calling out to anyone - someone - to come and rescue me from this..

Feeling the wet lips of Jared’s brush against my outer thigh, I jumped and allowed more tears to leak down the side of my face. My jaw clenched as my lips trembled, small and choked cries tumbling from them as I glanced down, the Blue Iris making me smile as I tried to not focus on what was about to happen..

Jared’s lips pressed against the top of my thigh as I clenched the muscle, hoping it would take him off his path, but he just nipped at it with his teeth, only to continue what he was aiming for.. My Daisy. My innocence.

Sure, while dating we had sex and I loved it but once you got married and had sex.. It was like the first time all over again. And now? Now, it just felt dirty.. Wrong.. Because it was.

Leaning my head back, and closing my eyes as if that would help it all just - disappear. My eyes snapped open as the bedroom door was suddenly thrown open - two blurs came rushing in as Jared sat up, his usual beautiful suddenly gone… Dark.

“Get away from my wife you mother-” a deep voice growled as I squeaked, pulling my arms over my head as Jared’s, or dark Jared’s hands released their grasp on my wrist. A sudden fire was shot off as I gasped, turning onto my side as I turned my head to look over my shoulder, the Jared that had assaulted me now fell back against the floor, blood and this… Tar-like substance leaked from his chest.

“What the actual… Fuck!?” I screamed as I turned back onto my ass, scooting away from the dead body as I turned my head back towards the door. More tears blurring my vision as I felt a sudden pain in my chest; glancing down I noticed the flower slowly pull itself back into my chest, the dried bloody wound now healing as allowed a weak smile..

“My soulmate..”

The two words seemed overused by now, maybe even wrong.. But they were true. Turning my head back towards the bedroom door, I slowly stood with the help of my vanity. My legs turned into jello and as I was about to fall, I fell into arms and a chest but I didn’t want to look up.

“It’s me.. It’s your soulmate-”

“No, don’t call yourself that.. I don’t want a soulmate anymore, I want a forever.” My voice cracked as I tried to compose myself, still not meeting the eyes of whoever had saved me.. But I somehow knew him.. I knew who it was, but I was scared to meet his eyes…

“Then, I’ll be that forever. I’ll be your forever, just look at me.. Please.” His voice was a gentle whisper as the sound of something being dropped made me jump, pushing myself further into his chest. One of his arms snaked around my waist as the other slowly moved his hand beneath my chin, making my neck craned to look up and meet the eyes I’ve looked for the past years of my life…

“What the hell is going on? What is that thing, and why did it look and try to act like you..?” I whispered with a choked sob, not even noticing Jensen and Danneel in the room. They looked even more heartbroken than I was at the moment.

“We don’t know.. And again, we don’t know, but baby we have to go.” Jared’s voice was easy but stern as I nodded, not wanting to fight him.. Not wanting the same thing to happen again. I didn’t - couldn’t lose another man I’ve devoted so much of my life too... Not again.

Danneel had moved closer, taking my arm carefully as Jared and Jensen stood behind us, not moving as she leads me down the hallway.

Bodies.. Just piles of them almost lined the halls. What the hell happened within 24 hours that I don’t know about?! Swallowing thickly as I stared at the bodies of what looked to be my wedding guest, I turned my head to see Jensen and Jared talking.. Their voices too low for me to properly hear anything.

I watched as Dan helped Y/N leave the bloodbath that had happened overnight... Sighing through my nose, I reached for my gun as Jensen moved closer grabbing my shoulder I stood to move after the girls.

“You know.. After what she just went through, she’s going to need time..” Jay’s voice was low as I nodded, my bangs moving against my forehead as he frowned. I knew what he meant.. I mean, thinking that your husband went insane, killed your mother, and was about to force himself onto you and then most likely kill you afterward.. You obviously can’t get over shit like that.

“I know but she’s strong. Stronger than us, and she’ll help us with this,”

“How, Jared? I don’t think she even knows what the hell is going on here! I mean.. Can she really not see it? What her fate is?” Jay asked as I snapped my head towards him, placing my sawed-off shotgun on my other shoulder as I thrust my index finger into his chest.

“Her fate won’t come if I have any say in it, now come on, I’m not letting her go off again..” I sighed with the shake of my head before moving out into the hallway. Trying to keep my mind off the chilling image of bodies that resembled family and friends, and the stench of blood and the black tar that smothered the room.

She didn’t need that on her shoulders - really no one deserves that on their shoulders. But now that I had her, I’m not letting anything or anyone take her away, not again.. And God help the bastards that come for her to make her meet her sinister fate…

The Hands-On Approach, by JettieBettie Vex has never given Percy’s hands much thought before; she is very much like everyone else, distracted by the white hair, apathetic aristocratic gaze, and quick witted intelligence. He certainly seemed the type when they first met, the kind of man with nothing but a callus on his finger from a quill pen. By now she knows better. Lovely bit of character study.

the myth of loneliness, by seimaisin “The wings were a big deal, huh?” “Yes and no,” she says. “I don’t know. Which is a very specific answer, I know.” A lovely little bit of connection in a lonely place.

I want to tell you but I don’t know how, by impossibletruths Such an easy phrase, he knows, small and simple and short, but it sticks in his throat. Besides––actions, they say, speak louder than words. Aww, this is sweet and lovely.

A Civilized Discussion, by curriebelle The one from Trinket’s POV. I love it so much.

Kima/Allura

oh and it aches (and it feels oddly good to hurt), by mischief7manager “They’ve been traveling together for three days now, and if that self-righteous, sanctimonious, supercilious paladin opens her mouth to spout about Bahamut’s glorious purpose one more time, Allura is going to cast Hold Person on her and dump her off a cliff.” Three times Kima saved Allura’s life, and one time Allura returned the favor.

Brighten My Northern Sky, by impossibletruths Cassandra keeps speaking, but Kima pays her no mind because standing at the window, tired and pale and dusty and here, alive, in Whitestone, is Allie. Aww, this is lovely and sweet.

Just promise me we’ll be alright, by impossibletruths In the space of a heartbeat, it all comes crashing down, and she makes her choice. Kima’s voice is so good in this; I love it so much.

we’re not broken, just bent (look, i’m still around), by mischief7manager Kima and Allura rekindle their relationship at Whitestone and find out what has changed, and what hasn’t. This is gorgeous and quiet and vulnerable. I love how Kima snaps and is uneasy, the way Allura blames herself for what happened.

Percy/Pike

Time is not on our side, by thevaliantdust Pike’s divine connection ends, and the waiting begins. Set after episode 59. This is some Quality Angst.

Until you set your old heart free, by impossibletruths In the aftermath of the tomb, Pike makes a discovery, and Percy remembers that not all healing is magic and mended bones. Quiet, lovely, comforting. (ep 44 spoilers)

Keyleth/Vax

i’m yours and that’s it, whatever, by mischief7manager (Keyleth/Vax) “Vax’ildan of Vox Machina asks Keyleth of the Air Ashari to marry him on a warm day in early spring. ‘Wait, what?’ she says.” Cultural misunderstandings surrounding marriage is my jam! Oh god it’s so stinking cute.

love is watching someone die, by nighimpossible (Raven Queen/Vax, Keyleth/Vax) Five dreams Vax'ildan has of the Raven Queen. Creepy and melancholy.

Other pairings/multi

Things in between the fractures and fissures, by impossibletruths (Keyleth/Kashaw) It’s fine, she tells herself. It’s an idle curiosity. It’s checking in on a friend. There is a question she needs to ask, but it is not the one she’s thinking of. Or, two weeks after the Tomb Incident, Keyleth and Kashaw have a chat. There is never enough Keyleth/Kash, and this is so lovely and well-characterized.

The dance, by valiantdust (Vax/Gilmore) Gilmore wakes in Vax’s arms. Yes, it is a Gilmore POV of That Scene. Because I love dying and being dead, I must spread this around. (episode 39 spoilers)

another dream, another love you’ll hold, by zornslemon (Cassandra/Kaylie) ��Vox Machina is like that. They come into people’s lives, perform incredible acts of heroism, and then leave again, ignoring the people they leave behind.” Cassandra and Kaylie bond. This is so out of left field, and it works really well.

elements of desire, by notalwaysweak This is a series exploring the formation and negotiation of multiple pairings, from multiple POVs. It’s like a cozy polyamorous blanket.

What Are You?, by Sparxflame (not tagged but basically Percy/Orthax) “What is this?” asks the smoke, quietly. Percy swallows, on his knees, hanging in the endless dark of the void. He knows he’s dreaming, knows none of this is real – but none of that changes the fact he’s alone, and it’s dark, and the smoke is so thick around him that he can barely breathe. “It’s- my gun,” he says. The kinda fucked-up Percy gun kink story I didn’t know I wanted. 👌🏼

serve you well, by endquestionmark (Vax/Briarwoods) So: “Anything you need,” Vax says, and means it with all the fervency of someone with nothing left to barter. Legit the fic I was hoping somebody would write after Vax disappeared into the Briarwoods’ room. (dubcon warning)

Gen

Prowl, by resonant_aura Pike Trickfoot has been a healer for as long as she could remember. But she isn’t only a healer–and it would be beneficial for her enemies to remember that. Who doesn’t love a badass!Pike story? I like that this fills in some of what happens when she’s at the temple.

Simple Creed, by notalwaysweak Helping Pike out in the hospital is more gory than glorious. But Gilmore discovers it’s not without its own rewards. A lovely little character piece, illuminating both Pike and the effect she has on people. (episode 39 spoilers)

Gods and Champions, by earthquakegirl Following Ep. 48, Pike gets fed up with Vax avoiding her and decides it’s time they talk. I like how this digs into both their characters, and people’s perceptions of Pike.

we are not along in the dark with our demons, by TechnicalTragedy “How do you do it, Pike?” “Oh, it’s a constant fight. But us? We’re good at that.” I love how this digs into how much everybody looks up to Pike, and how important it is for the group, but especially Percy.

In Healing Healed, by icarus_unchained Set just at the end of Ep.52. Pike considers Percy, Vox Machina, light and darkness, healing and being healed. Pike’s perspective on what Percy does is absolutely lovely.

And we will stand beside and breathe in their new life, by impossibletruths Percy has lost siblings enough; he had thought himself free of the fear of losing a loved one. He never expected the bright-haired druid girl to crawl into his heart and stir up those long-buried memories. But then, Keyleth rarely does as expected. Or, six times Percy saw his siblings in Keyleth and one time Keyleth called him on it. I am super weak for Percy and Keyleth stories and this is such a good one.

Just the Endless Frozen Pines, by isyotm Keyleth is there long after everyone else is gone. She makes sure Whitestone is too. There may have been ugly crying while reading this.

Intertwined, by sabinelagrande The morning after doesn’t go quite like Percy expected. Technically Percy/Vex, but not really the focus of the story. Cackling.

tame the ghosts in my head, by lakilaes Vex is five when she starts keeping track of how much they spend. Oh this is just fucking heartbreaking.

Night Moves, by sabinelagrande Vax has an unexpected guest, and he would rather not know why. The one where Trinket gets sexiled.

Culpability, by CorvidFeathers After Vex’s brush with death, Percy and Cassandra have a conversation about judgment and guilt, and work out a few of the knots in the tangle of past regrets and mistakes that shadow them both. Why does this not have more kudos? This is complicated and real; probably the best Cassandra and Percy fic I’ve read. (episode 44 spoilers)

Of Edges and Survival, by Kayssna She cries the day she forgets her mother’s favorite perfume, and cries harder when she realizes she doesn’t remember her eldest brother’s face. A lovely little vignette.

It Might Sting a Little, by curriebelle Everyone in Vox Machina must have pierced ears so they can use the magic whisper earrings. Ergo, an ear piercing fic that turned into a Percy character study, because of course it did. It’s really interesting having a look at this Percy, who is so different from the one we see on the stream. Also he gets roughed up a tiny bit in a loving way.

Empires at Peace, by curriebelle Post Episode 38 - Gilmore reflecting on Vax’s decision. Oh god this hurts, and it’s so perfectly in character.

New beginnings, by thevaliantdust Gilmore and Sherri begin rebuilding their business in Whitestone This is so cute.

sugar, we’re goin’ down, by notalwaysweak “I’ve never dueled a dragon before.” How it all went down: the duel, and Emon’s walls too. The one where Gilmore is a badass and a hero, and Sherri is too. There may have been some crying. (The title is a nice touch.) (episode 39 spoilers)

A little help from my friends, by impossibletruths It all seems pretty simple to him. She knows, he doesn’t, she can teach him. Two plus two equals–– well, whatever. Point is, there’s nothing wrong with asking for a little help. Keyleth teaches Grog a thing or two about fighting. Delightful.

Garden-variety training, by charmedward It’s the middle of the afternoon when Grog finds Keyleth crying in the grounds of Greyskull Keep. A lovely bit of interaction between two characters we don’t see talking much together.

the light in me will guide you home, by notalwaysweak While Vox Machina roam Tal'Dorei gathering allies and power, a smaller group holds Whitestone together. A nice look at the bits we don’t see in the main narrative. (Chroma Conclave spoilers)

forget forgotten, by 1001cranes 5 Times Vax Was Not the Raven Queen’s Champion Proper drabbles, each a delightful tiny AU in itself.

* fifteen feet of pure white snow, by cinderfell Critical Role (post Chroma Conclave arc); Cassandra de Rolo When you’ve lived your life in a gilded cage, it’s hard to leave even once the door has been opened.

This is such a fantastic character study focusing on a fear that Cass would plausibly have, and it’s treated with such empathy and compassion.

frost in the brambles, by vype There is a universe where Percival de Rolo was struck down by arrows instead. The one where Cass is the one Vox Machina finds. I love this so much.

Exandria NM, by sabinelagrande The series where Vox Machina works for the National Parks Service. Don’t laugh, it’s fucking great because it is so wonderfully specific and obviously written with insider knowledge. Tell Sabine how much you love it so she’ll write more.

Modern Keyleth/Kash coffeeshop AU omg it’s so stinkin’ cute.

* The Hero’s Petition, by NevillesGran Far in the northern reaches of Tal'Dorei, the city of Whitestone lies half-buried under snow and dark trees. They say monsters live there, now, ruled by worse. Holy shit, i fucking love after hours so much, to the point it's 6am and i can't sleep cause i'm thinking about it. But also, with everything i read, i try to picture what would happen to the characters after the story. Like i'm imagining the rest of their lives, or even just an epilogue. I don't really know if that actually makes sense. Well, the point is i really can't do that with this story. Do they stay together or it turns out to be just one great night between two strangers?? (1/2)

(2/2) I'm really so curious with this but, at the same time, i'm dreading the answer cause i'll be so sad if you tell me that they don't work out and clarke goes back to her dull life with L. Well, anyway, i really want to know your thoughts for their lives post-after hours. And also, i'd like to say you're amazing and a goddess and your bellarke fics have been a saving grace for me in this really hard year. PS: come to brazil daddy (i can say that for real cause i'm brazilian)

ok but real talk i will come to brazil, once i get a full time job again. my bff’s bf is from there so i am hoping to go with them sometime.

so i tend to use fanfic as a way to rewrite the bad things that have happened to me into “what if this dude hadn’t treated me like garbage? how would it have worked out?” so like tw was very much about me working through my issues with someone i knew when i was younger. and giymfa is about mending what had happened in my mfa when i got ostracized by my cohort, etc.

after hours took a date that was very good, with a man who was very bad, and fixed it. the reality is that we went out a few times and then he ghosted me.

so something like that maybe, but the fixed version. like they go on a few dates, and bellamy (bc now it’s bellamy pov i guess) realizes he’s actually seriously falling in love for the first time in his life, so he backs off, because he thinks clarke doesn’t feel the same way, and she’s going to dump him for lexa, and she has another year of school anyway, and also she’s too good for him, what could she possibly see in him? your usual bellamy blake fare.

and then uhh, a year apart, maybe? so bellamy can get his shit together and have raven, miller, octavia, jasper, monty, and even gina kick his ass over it. clarke graduates and then they “happen to run into each other” maybe and bellamy apologizes for ghosting, and clarke decides to give him a second chance, and HAPPILY EVER AFTER. i’m talking EVENTUAL MARRIAGE. AND BABIES. but before that, MANY WILD ADVENTURES, because they are both BEACONS OF CHAOS.

i’m so glad you’ve been enjoying my fics. writing them has also been my saving grace for a strange, ridiculous year.

Hello Friends!

@winterbythesea is one of the most talented shipmates i know. She create amazing CS art and writes brilliant stories. Today we will focus on her wonderful stories. i fall in love with Given The Choice from the first read and i jump up and down with joy every time i see it’s updated. One of my fav of her stories that to this day has special place in my heart is bring back what once was mine - absolutely perfect story.
