6/5/24.
All Fall Down were one of the earlier ("My Brand New Wallpaper Coat" is FN089) Flying Nun bands. They were based in Christchurch and "burned bright and blew apart". This is their only EP but the Bandcamp digital version has been remastered to "fit within the contemporary digital environment and bring it closer to the band's original live energy."
This is some classic Flying Nun jangle and bass. Certainly fellow Christchurchians (?) The Bats come to mind. This also recalls the solo work of Barbara Manning. What's truly amazing is that when All Fall Down "blew apart" it doesn't seem like the musicians formed other bands.
As we all know the Flying Nun sound went on to influence thousands. I was just listening to San Francisco band Poundsign.
Here's hoping for a reissue as the original pressings of this are either expensive or unavailable.

Throwback Thursday #46!- V/A- Pop American Style (March Records, 1996)
By the mid-90’s the indie pop scene was bursting worldwide with new bands seemingly popping up everywhere, issuing new 7” singles every day. The American scene was no different with bands all over the place and compilations of all shapes and sizes (I even issued my own compilation, Popular World comp, on my very short-lived Sky Blue Records imprint in 2000).
Jack “Skippy” McFadden’s March Records label had been going for a few years by this point and he had released some truly fine stuff (that Holiday debut is still one of my faves) so he threw his hat in with a comp of his own. But this wasn’t just any old comp, this one was a 2-disc set (with K-Tel being an influence) of too many great songs to name, finding bands in just about every outpost of America.
The record starts with Shoestrings and their impossibly lovely “Summer Days” (they released a very fine sophomore album a few years ago on Shelflife) and then right into the Rocketship classic, “Hey Hey Girl” then onto the Cuddlecore (not my term) of Cub (with “Howard”) and on to the suave pop of the previously-mentioned Holiday with “It’s Only Love.”
40 songs spread out over two discs with more great cuts coming via Heartworms (a side project of Archie from Velocity Girls), Allen Clapp his Orchestra, My Favorite (with the brilliant “Go Kid Go”) and Poundsign with the superb “Starry Night.”
Who else? further, Vehicle Flips, Holiday Flyer, Aberdeen, the Push Kings, Elf Power, Tullycraft and too many more. It really did seem like the comp to end all comps and I played it for days/months.
If you missed this the first time around then head on over to Discogs where you can find a copy for a very reasonable price
**side note- a few years later Skippy released Moshi Moshi: Pop International Style with a 2-cd compilation of bands, as the title suggests, from the USA and around the globe. Not quite the eye-opener that this comp was but still pretty damn good.

PART SIX with forgotten treasures of shoegaze and closely related styles. These bands are pretty much forgotten with less than 900 monthly listeners on Spotify, despite excellent songs. (The Songs mentioned below are my favourites from them).
All songs in one playlist! (Link in the comment). Will be updated in the coming weeks with further posts… so stay tuned and give it a spin!)

Ah, ye olden days. You see, children…long ago, around the grand and terrifying turn of the century, we had phones like this. We had texting limits on our flip phones so Every Text Was Sacred. And, of course, we had the T-9 texting form. We had no keyboards, no fancy touch screen. To make ourselves seen, we must sacrifice our souls and hit the buttons until our letter came up on the tiny screen. (Woe…when we went to far and had to scroll through again) See, you think things like LOL, rn, omw, etc… are part of internet/phone culture without knowing why, but we crawled so that you, my precious child, could run screaming into the void.

Los artistas y su increíble música. - https://wp.me/p4pCgM-4bz

I'm 90% certain the poundsign meant crack as in cracked or insane. I was making a pun on crack as in buttcrack and continuing the absurdity by calling the poundsign a crack alarm.
Can't wait to see what all the hubbub is!
