No matter what we do in life we generate waste. How we handle that waste is what we need to address. I primarily work in clay and because of that I have lots of time to reduce waste. Every pot doesn’t make it to the final firing and if I catch it before the bisque it will get tossed into a reclaim bucket. As I trim my work or carve it, those bits and pieces get tossed into the reclaim bucket too. Once the bucket is full I get to work with my newest tool, a deairing pugmill. This back and wrist saver has made reducing waste so much easier and has allowed me to create better work with less time as I am not wasting time trying to save a bad piece. So it serves too waste saving functions. As you can see I use an old sponge and plastic bags from my clay to keep the chamber damp. Those plastic bags work great and get used until they just fall apart, then they get placed on the recycle bin. Another nice thing about creating functional pottery is that one piece can last for thousands of years of use, reducing our dependence on plastic and single use items. If a piece meets the hammer or breaks in use, instead of tossing it into a landfill. I will take the shards and put them in the bottom of planter to improve drainage, or give them to a mosaic artist. When it comes to firing my pieces I try to stuff the kiln with as much work as possible to limit how much energy is used in the electric kilns or gas in my big kiln. We only have one planet and it’s little steps that will keep it around for future generations to enjoy.
