Dorchester Potteryworks: The heritage of a community icon

Dorchester Potteryworks is 1 of our community’s historic treasures. Founded in 1895 by a Connecticut man, George Henderson, and operated by him and his family, the organization created earthenware pottery for eight decades right until it shut in 1979.

The organization was positioned on Victory Road, around the edge of what in the late 1800s was the Dorchester waterfront and is now Morrissey Boulevard. Henderson realized the pottery small business in New Haven just before going to Dorchester, in which he built his home and bought an industrial creating throughout from the Mill Street residential community.

Before and just right after the transform of the 20th century, the Henderson family developed plain and utilitarian merchandise, largely for farm use – feeders for chickens, storage jars, acid pots, and dipping baskets. Later, back home in Dot, I discovered my way to the Victory Road manufacturing unit and purchased 4 substantial espresso mugs – for $4 each.

Following the big wooden-burning kiln was changed by the more compact, gas/electrical units, the company minimized its hours and positioned boundaries on income. By the late 1960s, the retail store was opened just 1 day a 7 days and purchases have been minimal to two pieces for every purchaser.

Interest in Dorchester Pottery surged immediately after the company shut down, and many group activists sought to create a museum at the industrial web page.

In 1980, a fireplace ruined the first Henderson residence and most of the industrial buildings close by only the brick beehive kiln structure survives currently. It was extra to the National Register of Historic Locations in 1985, and in 2001, the property was acquired by Bay Cove Human Solutions, which nevertheless utilizes the creating to this day.
