Dorchester Potteryworks: The heritage of a community icon
Dorchester Potteryworks is 1 of our community’s historic treasures. Founded in 1895 by a Connecticut man, George Henderson, and operated by him and his family, the organization created earthenware pottery for eight decades right until it shut in 1979.
The organization was positioned on Victory Road, around the edge of what in the late 1800s was the Dorchester waterfront and is now Morrissey Boulevard.
Henderson realized the pottery small business in New Haven just before going to Dorchester, in which he built his home and bought an industrial creating throughout from the Mill Street residential community.
Before and just right after the transform of the 20th century, the Henderson family developed plain and utilitarian merchandise, largely for farm use – feeders for chickens, storage jars, acid pots, and dipping baskets. The enterprise also sold a well-liked product or service identified as “Henderson’s Foot Warmer,” a porcelain pig that could be stuffed with very hot water and put at the foot of a bed.
In 1914, Henderson expanded the company and crafted a enormous “beehive kiln” – 20 toes in diameter – and for the upcoming 50 percent century it assisted to create a lot of 1000’s of pieces of stoneware pottery, incorporating these types of home products as beanpots, day-to-day plates, and casserole dishes. It is the only making that even now stands on the website.
The potteryworks was situated adjacent to the Aged Colony Railroad’s tracks from which boxcars of firewood had been shipped to furnish the gas to fire the furnace. Once the pottery was shaped by hand, it was positioned on rows of brick shelves inside the kiln, which when sealed generated temperatures achieving up to 3,000 levels Fahrenheit.
The pottery would “cook” for some times, and then neat down for many much more days afterwards. There was normally the dread that if cooler air broke into the sealed tremendous-heated kiln, each piece of pottery within would crack.
When the furnace was cooking, massive clouds of black smoke would fill the neighborhood for days all over Clam Level and Pope’s Hill. In the mid-1960s, new environmental rules triggered the shutdown of the wood-fired kiln and the family included new fuel-fired and electrical-fired kilns. But they soon observed that the decrease warmth produced in them adjusted the texture of their merchandise.

Although the early products and solutions have been supposed for incredibly primary and unadorned utilitarian utilizes, in the 1940s, the enterprise introduced in decorators who formulated a unique style to the perform. A great deal of the pottery was manufactured in a distinct blue motif, and attracted by the patterns, buyers shortly opened a new market for the potteryworks.
It was in 1963, when I was checking out the home of a higher education friend’s mothers and fathers, that I to start with listened to about Dorchester Pottery. When they discovered I was from Dorchester, they excitedly advised me that just about every time they came to Boston they would pay a visit to the potteryworks and return home with a lot of items – espresso mugs, plates, bowls, and other collectibles. They proudly showed me their entire eight-piece evening meal established – plates, cup & saucer, sugar & creamer, all in the distinct “Blueberry” sample.

Later, back home in Dot, I discovered my way to the Victory Road manufacturing unit and purchased 4 substantial espresso mugs – for $4 each.
Following the big wooden-burning kiln was changed by the more compact, gas/electrical units, the company minimized its hours and positioned boundaries on income. By the late 1960s, the retail store was opened just 1 day a 7 days and purchases have been minimal to two pieces for every purchaser.
Interest in Dorchester Pottery surged immediately after the company shut down, and many group activists sought to create a museum at the industrial web page.
In 1980, a fireplace ruined the first Henderson residence and most of the industrial buildings close by only the brick beehive kiln structure survives currently. It was extra to the National Register of Historic Locations in 1985, and in 2001, the property was acquired by Bay Cove Human Solutions, which nevertheless utilizes the creating to this day.
