It’s such a short but lovely season. That short period of time when all the trees turn amazing colors, there is always a slight breeze and then there is the smell of fall. That one day you open the door and you can smell it, maybe you can’t describe it, but it’s there.
Fall, the season of pumpkin spice everything. And that’s OK by me. I have always loved pumpkin everything. So to show my love of pumpkin I decided to make a few pumpkin dishes.
Maybe not your typical orange pumpkins but I like the colors that came out by my mixing glazes.
Then, of course, I had to include the fall leaves. I have a lot of Hydrangea bushes and grape vines around my property. I felt they would make perfect fall accents to anyone’s holiday table.
Slab rolled clay is the perfect canvas for creating special shapes and designs from clay. I do most of my work with a slab roller. Occasionally I will throw clay on my wheel but I have let myself get rusty at it. I am trying to make myself just sit down and throw, especially cups. But alas I am having no luck. But I will keep trying. If any of you potters out there can “throw” me some advice on how do make cups on the wheel I would love to hear from you.
In the meantime I make pottery from slabs of earthenware clay. Like this fall platter I just made to go along with my pumpkin and leaf plates.
Well I know I haven’t been blogging on a regular basis, I will try to improve on that also, because I would love to share my journey into making and hopefully selling my pottery now that I am retired.
Right now I’m gonna go get a pumpkin latte and glaze some new pottery.
And All At Once Summer Collapsed Into Fall It's such a short but lovely season. That short period of time when all the trees turn amazing colors, there is always a slight breeze and then there is the smell of fall.

Handles pulled. They're stiffening up before they will be attached to the trimmed mugs I threw yesterday. Thanks to everyone who watched my video on #periscope 😊 I'll have it better figured out (so I can see the comments and reply!) for the next one. #pottersofperiscope #new #socialmedia #handles #demo #ceramics

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” ― Maya Angelou
LOL. Not literally. But it’s a good day and about time I fired up my kiln. It’s been a long time since I have been able to make pottery. Life kept getting in the way.
As you may know I have been working on organizing my studio (aka the basement) so I have room to create and make pottery. Well it’s not perfect but I have my slab roller, potters wheel and tables set up and I’m off the races.
It has felt so good to get back to making pottery. I was a little nervous about getting back into it. But I have been following potters and watching their scopes on Periscope. #Pottersofperiscope I have learned so much from so many amazing potters from all over the world. A lot of new techniques and styles of pottery. I’ve even started a new collection. I am going to buy a piece of pottery from each of my favorite potters. I started with Jessica Putnam Phillips (the porcelain soldier on etsy)
Michael Kline, Adam Field, Heesoo Lee, Maude Andersson, Lisa and Alex Lapella, and so many more.
Sometimes I watch too many scopes and a voice in my head asked “Are you crazy? You’ll will never be that good.” But then the other voice said “Yes you are… But don’t let that stop you”.
I’m not. So this is what I have done. I went downstairs and I made pottery. Plates, platters, functional stuff. Had a ball, fell in love with the clay all over again.
And now It’s time to fire up my kiln. I loaded it up. It started like a charm. It made the familiar ticking sound as the temperature started to rise. I felt like it was saying “where have you been old friend? I missed you.”
So it will take about 11-12 hours to come to temperature and then a few more hours to cool down. I can’t wait to open it up. It is always like Christmas when I do.
I’ll let you know how it goes.

I am now on periscope! If you’re not familiar with it, periscope is an app that lets users broadcast from their mobile device. There's a great community of potters on periscope, and I’ve really enjoyed watching other people’s scopes! I’m planning on scoping while I unload my kiln, which will be either tomorrow or monday.
If you’re interested in watching, just follow me @ whitefeatherstudio on periscope. The app is free and available through the Apple and Android app stores.
