Plectranthus verticillatus 🍃
Known as "Planta del Dinero" or "Swedish Ivy". I'm successfully propagating a huge specimen which belongs to my mother and so far I have 2 healthy pots with a few branches with fully developed roots.
Beside art and animals I do love plants too. That's a rope cutting knife I use for cut clean any branch.

garden update || 10/25/24 🌿🏡🥰🌱

see that very nice-looking raised bed on the bottom right? THAT'S NEWWWW!!! i just set these two new raised beds up yesterday with a dear friend who's been staying the night over the past few days!! yippee!! 🎉 i've been showing this friend of mine how to garden and letting them learn in my backyard. we've only done flowering plants so far as well as planting dill & cilantro seeds -- so yesterday, i decided it was time to learn about crops!
we sowed seeds for walking egyptian onions, broccoli de cicco, dill, and cilantro; but i plan on also teaching them how to transplant so we'll also transplant in more kale, cabbage, and hopefully chinese pink celery! this'll be a very full & very productive raised bed, i hope!

i also have a few pictures of the progress in the greenhouse box!

the seedlings are all steadily coming along! i do need to sow a LOT more chinese pink celery seeds, so i'll do that once i finally get another bag of soil (i already need 2 more for potting houseplant props, 4 more for my last raised garden bed, and probably 2 more for future seedlings -- augh my budget is so fucked).
currently in the greenhouse box, i have 8 chinese pink celery, 15 cilantro, 3 copenhagen market cabbage, 3 blue-curled scotch kale, and 3 dill. (holy shit so much cilantro, they're going to be gifts for friends!!) i plan on transplanting the kale, cabbage, & pink celery all into the raised beds, i'm just waiting for them to grow up a bit more unfortunately.

i also have photos of some of the flowering plants in the raised beds from today! i use an app on my phone called planta to keep track of all my plants, and once a month, i like to upload photos & notes as a monthly plant progress report. it does get pretty daunting, seeing allllll the tasks that i have to do daily in the app, but i slowly make my way through it! i'm one of those people who just really likes recording & organizing stuff, especially hobbies like reading, gardening, writing, working out, et cetera. i've got apps/websites for most of them!
the butterfly milkweed, bee balm, and coneflowers are steadily going dormant for the cold seasons -- i really really hope they survive and thrive in the spring!!! i'm proud to say i've been a lot better about remembering to prune my chrysanthemums and they definitely look a lot happier (especially compared to last fall's mums)! that coleus is inevitably going to die off, i've accepted it since they're not really meant for outdoors especially in the ground. my lithodora is looking alright (hopefully will bloom again in the spring), my gerbera daisies are looking gorgeous, and the petunias are doing alright (yet are looking a bit... scattered, i suppose).

that's mostly it now for this garden update! i will say my zinnias are still going mighty strong, and i've been seeing soooo many bugs & critters in my tiny lil city suburb garden, and that makes me happy! the stray cats are mostly comfortable with me, the birds love their bird feeders, the squirrels keep taking shits in my raised beds (as well as this one stray cat i call cinnabun), and there's a regular praying mantis in my garden that i am lowkey terrified of (she's just so fucking huge i think she's cool and i respect her but damn she watches me steadily and it's freaky)!
i am potentially going to try to make an arch trellis in the garden with these camping tent poles that i want to repurpose, so maybe that'll be my next big thing? or i do still want to do another greenhouse box once my budget is not as tight (although that's looking like not anytime soon unfortunately) -- we'll see in the future!!
thank you for sticking around this long, and i hope everyone has a wonderful day + weekend!!! :)

Amaryllis belladonna
Information:
Kingdom: Plantae
Order: Asparagales
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Subfamily: Amaryllidoideae
Genus: Amaryllis
Species: A. belladonna
Amaryllis belladonna, the Jersey lily, belladonna-lily, naked-lady-lily, or March lily, is a plant species native to Cape Province in South Africa but widely cultivated as an ornamental. They appear as clusters of soft pink, 10cm funnel-shaped blooms sitting on top of long purplish-red and green stems, with up to twelve flowers blooming from just one stem.
Amaryllis belladonna are half hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to around -5C. It’s recommended to protect them from frost during harsh winters, and to start them off in sheltered conditions under cover at first.
Amaryllis belladonna requires very little attention and makes a truly unique display in the fall garden. Ridiculously easy to grow, all parts of this plant are poisonous, therefore it is diligently ignored by hungry deer, rabbits, and other critters.
The Jersey lily is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and parks, and it is also used in cut flower arrangements. It is known for its beauty and hardiness, as it can thrive in a wide range of soil types and growing conditions.
Tips to grow and care for A. belladonna:
A. belladonna should be planted with their necks at soil level, not submerged under the soil.
You’ll get your best results growing the bulbs in full sun, in moist, well-draining soil, although they will tolerate some light shade.
Plant them out about 10cm apart.
Wherever you’re planting them, make sure that the soil doesn’t get waterlogged.
If you do need to transplant them, do it in autumn after the plant has finished flowering and just as the leaves start emerging.
In a frost prone area, or areas that regularly hit below 2 degrees Celsius, plant them in front of a south facing wall, or in a pot that is placed in a sheltered area.
Once planted, it may take a year or so for the bulb to become properly established, so avoid disturbing the bulbs for a couple of seasons.
They prefer less water in summer, so in summer rainfall areas, ensure sufficient drainage.

For my birthday, my mom took part of my sister's Lily plant and transplanted it to a new pot for me to have 🥺😍🥰
My houseplant collection is slowly growing, and I just found a cool app to keep up on houseplant duties. It's called Plantminder and I like it a lot more than Planta (it's free, and much simpler)
I now have a total of four plants- and only mild anxiety about keeping them alive 😂 my apartment just doesn't get much sunlight. But I'm feeling optimistic. 🤞🏻

3 Kingdoms Chicken Recipe
This one's a little more involved than burrito glop, but I'm up to making it most nights and I'm a depressive lump who can barely drag himself out of bed half the time so it's gotta be relatively low-spoons, right? Right.
First things first: the name is a joke. It's got nothing to do with the 3 kingdoms period in Chinese history. Instead it's because the dish includes chicken (animalia), lots of veggies (plantae) and mushrooms (fungi).
You will need:
rice and a means of making rice
a big pot
a pan (if you've got non-canned chicken)
boneless chicken breasts, thighs, or canned chicken
butter or sesame oil
cream of mushroom soup concentrate
chicken broth
bok choi, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms of your choice.
seasonings of your choice.
My seasonings:
powdered garlic (lots)
onion flakes (also lots)
soy sauce (not as heavy as the garlic but not light)
kitchen bouquet/maggi (a modest amount)
fish sauce (a modest amount; like a single 'bloop' per can of soup. you can sub with oyster sauce if you've got that instead; both are good, if a bit different end results)
lemon juice (added in to cut the flavor if it gets too heavy/dark, to taste)
pepper (as desired)
sesame seeds (as desired)
chilli powder (as desired; I go light, you do you)
Prep:
Chop up your vegetables (and mushrooms if they're not pre-cut)
Defrost your chicken, tenderize it such that it's relatively flat and will cook more evenly.
Cooking:
Dump the can(s) of cream of mushroom concentrate into the big pot. Add about half a can's worth of chicken broth per can you're using. Set the burner to a low-ish heat, like 3 to 4.
Add your seasonings to the soup, stir thoroughly. Add your vegetables and turn the heat up to 4 or 5. Cover so it heats up faster, but leave the lid off once it's bubbling well so some of the liquid can boil off.
Make your rice. I recommend about a cup of rice per person you're serving, but maybe you really like rice and want to make loads of it. Don't let me stop you. Minute rice is fine, but you can literally use minute rice proportions (one cup water per cup of rice) to make basmati rice in the goddamn microwave if you don't have a rice cooker. Feel free to add a bit of ginger if that tickles you. I don't always, but sometimes I'm in the mood for it.
Heat up the pan, add a thin layer of sesame oil OR throw a pat or two of butter in and make sure it melts and covers the whole pan. Or do both, fuck, do what you want; rules are made up. Lay out your chicken breasts or thighs and sautee them, flippin' 'em and cutting them open as necessary to ensure they're thoroughly cooked.
Note: There is no such thing as 'medium rare' chicken. That is how you get food poisoning. Don't do it. Cook your chicken all the way through. No more pink should be showing. Love yourself, love your family, cook your food thoroughly.
Serve rice, serve chicken, pour soup/veggies over both. Eat it with a knife and fork unless you're the sort to pick up pieces of chicken and just tear them apart with your teeth.
Alternately, if you're not feelin' it, you can just throw some canned chicken in the pan for a bit, or even directly in with the soup and veggies and serve that over rice. If you're cooking for yourself, just throw it all in one big bowl, eat your fill, and put any leftovers in the fridge for later.
You can also cut up the chicken into chunks if you're gonna eat it with chopsticks, or if you just like it better that way. Ideally you sautee the breasts or thighs whole, then cut them up after they're cooked (they're juicier that way) but you can cut 'em up and then fry 'em if you like, make yourself happy.
This one has a lot more prep time involved (mostly in remembering to defrost the chicken, then tenderizing it, and in chopping up veggies) but you can cut corners by using pre-chopped frozen veggies and/or canned chicken. It's not as good, but it's still pretty great compared to the alternative depression meal of like, a whole sleeve of saltines or a few pre-cooked hot dogs.
There are no hard and fast rules to seasoning. I like to add it as I go, sampling the broth and judging what it needs more of. Too tangy? You overdid the lemon juice; add more carrots and a bit more kitchen bouquet/maggi. Too salty? You overdid the soy sauce; add more carrots and a bit of chilli powder to hide it from the people you're serving it to. You'll know, at least, for the next time.
