// OC Discourse: Honestly probably a lot of the usual garbage that gets lobbed at female characters for being female, your 'she's too strong already!!'-s and such. But also depending on what threads become canon I could see. A plethora of weird takes re: her and Nucleotide's relationship, whether or not its truly 'healthy,' whether or not Mariko's an enabler, and something something Mariko's irresponsible for helping this sweaty-palmed forest weirdo into Conton City after he proved he can be dangerous. ( Stuff off the top of my head )
for OCs: what fandom discourse would there be surrounding my character if they were canon?
Tumblr media
Welp. I can believe why some points could be brought up about Mariko and Nucleotide, but tbh I consider them as the same ones of those who say Beauty and the Beast is about impostor syndrome - aka nope, that's wrong. The romance develops after the Beast shows gratitude and kindness, and even more importantly after Belle scolds him. Likewise, Mariko does condemn Nucleotide's big POTO moment, and only considers bringing him to Conton after witnessing how truly miserable and desperate he feels about being alone again. She really falls for him once she sees him working hard to fit in.
RE her power level, it's a tough point! I never wanted Mariko to be OP despite her position as a Patroller, but still, she must be kinda strong to be able to be one. Initially, I planned her power level to equate to Goku's when he fights Ginyu. Not sure whether I should change it since she has become a professional Patroller now. She still can't turn SS, and I like to leave her a level of weakness. It's challenging when it comes to writing after all.

Your package was supposed to arrive today but it says it will be arriving late. We'll give USPS a break just this once. Any last minute things you need to do before Christmas?
- SS
I think delivery/postal workers get a big pass this year.
Oh crap. I haven't wrapped anything yet. I haven't baked one cookie. I did confirm that my instruments can resolve single particles with negative stain, so a bunch of cryoEM jockeys are happier, and I looked at pancreatic islets grown on films.
I'm a damn mess, but I have a ham and sweet potatoes. It was A Week.
I'm going to wrap and get the last minute decor done. My mom and the boys can make cookies tomorrow, and I'm going to lean further into the fact that this year is a bitch and this is the best I can do.
I DID manage to get all my gifts done! Go me! How about you, Santa? Any last minute holiday shenanigans?

Hmm...I haven't seen/heard much of Peter Karrie. I should go check him out. ^_^ My favorite Phantoms are Davis Gaines and Hugh Panaro. Their voices are incredible and I love their acting! Have you seen the musical live before? - Santa
I haven’t actually checked out Davis Gaines yet but I have enjoyed what I’ve seen and heard of Hugh. I’m...a little behind on my performers ha. I keep meaning to check out more of them, but I just never get time or when I do have time I’m not in the mood.
Unfortunately I haven’t seen it. The tour stopped in Dublin in 2012, but that was way before I was in the Phandom. Unless there was another tour I’d have to go to London to see it, and who knows when I’ll get to do that? I’m not exactly counting on it being anytime soon! Have you gotten to see it live?

there was indeed a wee bit of confusion in the north pole ahaha! (SS here again :))
that’s such a perfect response wow, yes of course classical music!! i feel like christine would really enjoy clair de lune. do you have any classical music icons? or a favorite classical piece? i do also quite enjoy the symmetry in angel of music and the final lair :)
ooooh! loving those holiday festivities. what are your favorite christmas movies? do you have any favorite ornaments? aside from the pickle of course 😂
oh yes, the crab is absolutely perfect for leroux. speaking of which, which version of poto is your favorite? do you have any specific head canons for the characters? forgive me if i barrage you with questions, please don’t feel inclined to answer all of them!
hope you have a nice day! 🧛🖤
Hi Santa!
Hmm for classical music it’s too hard to choose just one piece! Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is beautiful. Montagues and Capulets (Knight's Dance) from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet goes HARD, I love it. And I have to mention Méditation from Massenet’s Thaïs since that’s the song I chose to walk down the aisle at my wedding ❤️
For Christmas movies, I really love: The Muppet Christmas Carol, Elf, A Christmas Story, Mixed Nuts, While You Were Sleeping, and Christmas Vacation (to name a few 😆).
Tumblr media
This ladybug ornament my grandma gave me years ago is one of my faves, for sentimental reasons 🐞
My favorite version of POTO is the ALW musical! What’s yours?
Hope everything is going well at the North Pole! Take care, Santa!

Interview given to The Severus Snape and Hermione Granger Shipping Fan Group.  (sharing here Admin approved)
https://www.facebook.com/groups/199718373383293/
Hello Ciule and welcome to Behind the Quill, thank-you for sitting down with us for a chat.
SS/HG readers might be familiar with your stories “Awkward” and “Headmaster’s Wife”.
Okay, let’s jump right in. What's the story behind your pen name? Well, I sort of took one of my real names, swirled the letters around in the air with my imaginary wand, and I ended up with this. Can’t begin to imagine where I got the idea from... ;-) Later on, I realized that Ciule is actually a name in Romania. I had no idea, but there are people out there carrying this name for real. I guess I’m #sorrynotsorry?   Which Harry Potter character do you identify with the most? To be quite frank: No one, really. This is more about the characters I like, than truly identifying with them. I can relate to parts of some of them, but not the whole package. Primarily, I write about Hermione, Voldemort and Severus, and the one common thread between those three is the search for knowledge. That’s a trait I can identify with, but I’m neither an evil bastard, a grumpy protector nor a fretting, intelligent activist. I am, however, a swot. If you had asked who I’d want to be, the answer is clear. I want to be Albus Dumbledore. Though I can’t agree with the things he did, I feel absolutely certain that he’s the one who has the most fun during the books. I want to have that twinkling fun in face of absolute chaos.   Do you have a favourite genre to read (not in fic, just in general)? Fantasy! Definitely fantasy. While growing up, I read ‘everything’ in every genre, and in my twenties, I decided I’d spend my time reading what I loved the most. So, fantasy it is. Do you have a favourite "classic" novel? You landed me in an existential crisis right there. I mean, there’s so many to choose from! ‘Wuthering Heights’, I think. It hurts so good. Or maybe ‘Rebecca’, at least, I loved that when I was younger. Or the fairly obscure ‘Lorna Doone.’ When I was a kid, I wanted to be a film director, shooting Lorna Doone into an epic film. Oh well, there might be a theme in this selection of books which reflects in my writing… At what age did you start writing? The creative process has gone on since forever. I’ve told myself thousands of stories in my head, but rarely written anything down. At the age of ten, I had a co-writing project with one of my friends. We created this secret room in her basement, and painstakingly wrote a ‘novel’. It was fun, though the writing ended as it became too cold down in the basement during winter. How did you get into writing fanfiction? In 2009, I became completely obsessed with a TV-show in the last episode. I was watching the entire series, casually enjoying the murder mystery, and in the last episode, the villain said: “I can do the math,” and I was literally gone. That obsession sparked writing my first fanfic stories. Those stories are still on FFnet, but they aren’t any good. *shrugs* What's the best theme you've ever come across in a fic? Is it a theme represented in your own works? Compromise. The world isn’t a perfect place, and will never be. You can, however, make it more to your liking. It may not be perfect, but if you play the cards you are dealt, you might improve something. In Robert Jordan’s “the Wheel of Time”-series, one of the characters goes through a test in a parallel universe of sorts, and she thinks: “The world was not what she wanted, not anywhere near it.” I loved that: trying your best to make things as you want them to be in the face of dangers and difficulties.   And then there’s time travel! I love messing with time, and there are so many great Time-travelling fics. Plus, I have to say I have a certain love for the villains...   What fandoms are you involved in other than Harry Potter? Currently, I’m not writing for any other fandoms. I read Star Wars, GoT, POTO and LOTR, and in the past I read Smallville. Though it’s more of a type of ship for me, because I only read Reylo, SanSan, Erik/ Christine, Lex/Lana and ….drum roll… the extremely small and quite oddball ship of Eowyn/ Grìma Wormtongue. If you’ve never tried the last one, go search for the fantastic stories by auri_mynonys. If you could make one change to canon, what would it be? Do you have a favourite piece of fanon? One change: duh, that’s easy, isn’t it? Severus lives. Or, maybe Dumbledore acting more rational, not keeping so many secrets. Maybe telling McGonagall that Severus is on the Order’s side… (Interviewer is laughing - ”NOT so easy”) I do write Voldemort wins AUs, but I wouldn’t want canon Voldemort to win. I prefer him to be more sane than in canon. My absolute favourite piece of fanon has to be the Black library. I thought it was canon, but it’s not. This is a thing that really, really should exist in canon! Do you listen to music when you write or do you prefer quiet? I’m very much inspired by music, and sometimes I listen as I write, but not always. Some fics are heavily inspired by music, such as ‘Absence’ and the last epilogue to ‘The Manipulation of Time and Matter’. What are your favourite fanfictions of all time? Definitely ‘Two Steps from Hell,’ by the amazing Ssserpensssotia, but that’s a Volmione. This was such a wild ride, I felt like I was on the edge of my seat, holding my breath the entire time. Those twists and turns were so unpredictable and … Well, I’m in awe. The SS/HG fandom is so massive, there’s a plethora of great stories out there. The unfinished ‘Self-Slain Gods on Strange Altars’ is a wonderful story by scumblackentropy, and I love Slytherpoufs stories, especially the wip ‘Ghosts’, but also ‘Angels to Fly’. And then there’s the one that got away - it means, I can’t find it. In this story, Severus watches the thestrals, befriending one of them, I think, but they’re unpredictable and maybe even dangerous. He’s heartbroken, and knows how it all will go down, having bitterly accepted his role. It made me cry. And then there’s the works by Aurette, and lena1987, Subversa, Kittenshift… Are you a plotter or a pantser? How does that affect your writing process? I need (strike that: want) to draft the entire story before I post, to have some idea on how it goes. That makes it easier to write, but if it’s a long story, I’m happy as long as I know the general direction. This year, I finished a story that was on an unintended hiatus for two years, and I think part of my problem on getting back into writing it up was a too vague idea for the ending.   What is your writing genre of choice? Uh. I don’t know? Basically, you could argue that I’m a porn writer, or at least it’s fuelled by sexual tension and angst. So, romance or drama, bordering on erotica might be correct. To be frank, I haven’t really thought about categories after I started posting on AO3. Which of your stories are you most proud of? Why? Hard to say. I might go with “the Manipulation of Time and Matter,” because I think it’s the best plot I’ve created. Besides, I managed to write Hermione having a relationship with both Severus and Voldemort in the same fic. My favourite “clean” SSHG would be the short story ‘Grimmauld’. Did it unfold as you imagined it or did you find the unexpected cropped up as you wrote? What did you learn from writing it? In Grimmauld, the house became a character. That was unexpected, and not something I had planned from the beginning. So the lesson would be “don’t start posting until you know what’s going to happen.” Or else, this story might have turned out very much different. I had to throw in a little made-up lore on how you set blood wards on a house too to make it sentient. That proved to be a quite chilling piece of magic.   How personal is the story to you, and do you think that made it harder or easier to write? I love old houses. Exploring abandoned houses, going inside to see what remains of furniture, tapestries and everything is so exciting. (It can also be dangerous, but that’s another matter). Such houses makes me feel .. nostalgic, plus I get those nice little shivers down your spine that is a little like a horror story. So, I wanted to use Grimmauld as a setting to explore that in a fic, to really dig into the aching loneliness of a lost house. The story came very quickly to me, so I guess that helped me.   What books or authors have influenced you? How do you think that shows in your writing? Big question there. Hmm, I think … it’s hard to say. I’m a reader, really, and I couldn’t easily pick apart any influences. Though I have to say that one of the things I enjoyed when reading ‘Two Steps From Hell’ was the attention to magic. I think it’s important to include spells, rituals and the use of magic in my fics, because that’s what sets it apart from a Muggle AU, for example. That’s an important part of the world-building.   Do people in your everyday life know you write fanfiction? My significant other knows. I didn’t tell him, but he found out for himself, probably by spying on me. When he told me, I almost couldn’t stop laughing, because he… erm, he said he had thought about reenacting a scene in my PWP ‘Twenty Points to Gryffindor’, where Severus shouts the title as he… well… you get the gist. If he had done that, I’d have had a heart attack. I would literally be dead. Instead, I laughed non stop for an hour.   How true for you is the notion of "writing for yourself"? Haha, so true. You spend all those hours in front of your laptop - and if I wasn't motivated by doing it for myself, I can’t even see how I’d force myself through all those hours. It’s fun, though. I do this because I love it.   How important is it for you to interact with your audience? How do you engage with them? Just at the point of publishing? Through social media? Very important. I'm on the publishing sites (visible interaction is why I prefer AO3 instead of FFnet) and on Facebook, mainly. I love feedback (as all authors do), and when people form theories or make comments, I get an insight into my own writing. I know how it’s going to pan out, but the audience doesn’t, and how they perceive things might be different from how I think it is. At times, it influences how I go forward, mostly because I need to add things, to explain what’s going on. What is the best advice you've received about writing? Don’t post until you know the ending, and remember: the devil on your left shoulder will be at war with the angel on the right side. Listen to the angel telling you to wait a little longer, and not to the devil chanting: ‘Post, post, post!’ In the end, of course, you’ll give in to the devil, regretting it until you’re done. What do you do when you hit writer's block? Read. Read a lot. And read some more. Has anything in real life trickled down into your writing? Certainly. I’m a foodie. For example, everything that Voldemort eats is stuff I love. His food habits are primarily mine, and I love cooking.   Do you have any stories in the works? Can you give us a teaser? It’s a short piece, maybe three or four chapters, with the title ‘Transference’. The point of departure from canon is during their time in the tent at DH. Hermione wakes up in a bed, in a room she doesn’t recognize, having no idea where she is, but she spots a large, moving picture on the drawer:  Feeling panic rising, she stared hard at the moving and smiling pictures, and her heart leapt into her throat, pulse hammering as she recognized herself in the largest picture. A slightly older Hermione, in a white wedding dress, kissing and laughing at someone who simply had to be a much younger Severus Snape. It had to be him: Long black hair, hooked nose, sallow skin - but then he looked so young, carefree and happy - expressions she had never seen on her dour Professor's face. Beside the picture, there were numerous cards, greetings and well-wishings for their wedding - the date an impossible 21 August 1982, and amongst the cards, the largest one stood out, the black ink showing an elegant handwriting: “Dear Hermione and Severus! Best wishes for your wedding, Lord Voldemort.” Any words of encouragement to other writers? Read and write, in that order. Don’t worry about trolls, because when you contribute something that you created, it makes you so much more than people spending their time just raining on anyone’s parade. You brought something new to the world, they’re just reacting to things. If someone accuses you of a self-insert, go ahead and lecture them on the intentional fallacy. I promise, you won’t regret looking it up. ;-)   And please, mind the normal physical limits when you’re writing smut. Unless you give the male a stamina potion or put him under the Imperius, it’s unlikely that his refractory period allows him to come five times in one hour. Realistic smut is so much more sexy, lol. Thanks again for speaking with us Ciule.

Hello! It's your secret Santa! Today, I'd like to know, what's your favorite costume from Phantom and why?
Well dang yo way to begin with the difficult questions Santa!
LOVE Red Death because damn iconic look as he comes down those steps (even the movie version is a great aesthetic to me if I’m honest...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the musical one because despite the colours and flair of ‘Masquerade’ and the costumes there, Erik/The Phantom stands out in that gorgeous shade of red and the billowing fabric. And when they have his mouth of the skull move to speak I lose myself a little in excitement it just looks so incredible haha
And the movie one still has that gorgeous red to stand out against the black, white and gold and damn if I don’t love me a good frock coat with buttons and that little side cape piece thing is great <3 damn
I’m also a huge fan of Christine’s blue dress because I love that colour and I’m a huge fan of (late) Victorian fashion so it’s like *chef’s kiss*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Wishing dress I guess it is lol if I could have any of the outfits from the stage musical in my size it would be this one <3
THANKS FOR THE ASK SANTA I’M SO EXCITED FOR POTO SS THIS YEAR

Ah, but if I reveal all of my secrets now, where is the fun in that? Reaching for the stars with this next inquiry: what is the ONE piece of POTO merch that you wish you had or do you have it already? Toodles! -SS
I've actually never been huge on merch, (as I'm super secretive about my Phantom obsession, and I'm primarily a book fan anyway,) but my favorite would have to be the original cast recording on vinyl... of which I have two. I love the Phantom's masks and rings, of course, and I always liked that crewneck sweatshirt they made in the late 80s that was just a GIANT glow-in-the-dark mask and rose. So naturally, none of that is any help to you... 😂 (Sorry!)
That being said, I am not against merch or anything like that. I've just never really looked into it, so I don't even know what's out there!
(I hope you'll tell me eventually!)

I am so sorry to hear you've had troubles in the past with not hearing from your SS so promptly! I've noted that at first you showed up in the tag & in the search bar but recently today at least it's been more difficult to locate your blog and I must literally type your URL into a web browser to locate you. I suspect Tumblr goblins or naughty elves are behind this & I vow to spread so much cheer that the problem is forced to correct itself! <3 What's 1 xmas thing that gets you excited or cheery?
Silly naughty elves. You aren’t the only one. I’m having to do that too. I’ll check my privacy settings! Ironically Christmas hasn’t been that great of a holiday for me. But I always look forward to poto secret Santa now. And it makes me happy.
to answer the question - nutcracker- music, performances. Tchkovski was a brilliant artist. Actually most Christmas music that has the ability for me to dance to! 😂 if you need gift ideas for dance things - I don’t know how familiar you are with the dance world but I can send you my favorite places. 💙

"Santa's back, alright." 😎 what's your favorite quote from any of the Phantom adaptions?
Alright, alright, alright!  Hope you’re having a good week so far, Santa!
Oh my gosh, Santa.  You came straight for my heart, didn’t you?  While the specific phrasing varies from translation to translation, I find that I like David Coward’s version of it best.  It’s plainer and more stark than others.
“He had a heart big enough to hold the whole world, but in the end he had to make do with a hole in the ground.”
It leaves the reader the space to interpret this a bit-- it may mean the opera cellars, or it may mean a sad, shabby grave; wholly unfitting for the genius that fell into it.  No mention of empires, just a vague yet all-encompassing ‘whole world’; no specific ‘cellar’, but a grim ‘hole in the ground’.  I like that juxtaposition (I’m also a huge nerd so).
My next favorite regards La Sorelli, from the same translation-- in the first chapter, after describing in fairly luscious language the curves and graces of La Sorelli’s body, this:
““But in the matter of brains, everyone seemed to agree she didn't have many.  No one held it against her.”
How hilariously charitable.  :)
Any sass from Piangi ranks very high as well.

Ice skating is a perfect winter activity! It so great that you’re passionate about it. Santa confesses to having tried it in the past, but has injured themselves too many times to enjoy it anymore. Do you celebrate Christmas! Another holiday? Just the season! If so, what is your favorite part? And of course, Santa has to inquire about Phantom! What is your favorite version? Do you have a favorite cast? Are you a writer or artist? Santa needs intel for…..informative purposes. Hope you’re having a good week -🎅
I celebrate Christmas, plus my birthday is the 20th :) my favorite version of phantom was the 25th anniversary recording since that's what I saw first!
I'm both a writer and an artist, but draw waaaay more !
U too!

Rostelecom Cup: Ladies
Not gonna lie, not the most interesting GP stage, and if anything the gold and silver medal were really kinda already determined, but the top 3 really had some wonderful skates!
1. Alexandra Trusova - RUS
MY FAV! The fall before the SP was really cute not gonna lie. Her face when she was starting the program was priceless, trying to hold back laughs at a silly mistake. I’m really worried for her 3Lz+3Lo combo though. This entire season its been rather inconsistent, and she didn’t have even one successful attempt in the competition this time. But her 4T+1Eu+3S is a godly combo, and the fact that its in the second half! I would say its her best quad, tied with her 4T+3T. A landed 4S still won’t peak its head in competition, but I tell you, I’ve seen her practice videos, and that quad is beautiful! In terms of SS, I kind of think she’s improved in the SP, she’s gotten more into character. The FS is still kind of empty, and in the choreo sequence you can see that she is only thinking about the jumping passes to come. But you cannot argue against her win here again.
Tumblr media
2. Evgenia Medvedeva - RUS
Oh my god! Zhenya SLAYED here! Her SP is a thing of beauty, and she performs it with elegance and class. You can see her maturity and focus on artistry through her step sequence and the various uses of her arms throughout the program. I’ve got to say, this SP has to be her best one yet, its choreographed so well, and suited perfectly for Zhenya. I'm so glad that one, she changed the 3Lz in the SP to 3Lo, and that she actually got an “e” call for her 3Lz. Her FS is very good as well. I still feel like the second half of the step sequence could be performed with more speed and flow but the rest of the program is performed wonderfully. Zhenya stays in character and hits all her musical accents, performed all with grace. Her FS music is so beautiful though! I love the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack. Her spins are getting better too! I’m so glad Zhenya could perform two programs she can be proud of. Her reactions to performing clean were so cute! I am excited to see her at RusNats! (I really wish she could make the final...)
Tumblr media
3. Mariah Bell - USA
The short program just isn’t my thing. I am all for trying new styles and I think Mariah really performs the program well, but I just don’t like it. The choreography is kind of underwhelming for such overwhelming music honestly. But the FS... Oh I love that FS! Hallelujah is actually such a perfect piece for Mariah and honestly, Mariah has got to be one of the most versatile skaters out there. Hallelujah is touching, and performed with elegance and passion. The dress is beautiful, the music is emotional and the skating is just exceptional. Mariah’s spins have got to be some of the best out there honestly... they’re so fast and the positions are interesting and aesthetic.
4. Satoko Miyahara - JPN
Ugh. SATOKO! I really wanted you in the final! I really wanted to see a 20+ skater at the final, and I really wanted Satoko to keep her streak of qualifying for the final (this would’ve been her fifth year), but I guess not. That FS protocol was scary, almost every triple was called UR. Some of the calls were a little harsh, but I will say, she does need to fix those URs. It’s pulling back her scores and will prevent her from getting on podiums now. But performance wise, she is the TINY QUEEN. The SP is really growing on me not gonna lie, its so interesting, unique and different from her usual programs. And the FS, a masterpiece.
Tumblr media
6. Yuhana Yokoi - JPN
I really like Yuhana’s SP this season, shame she’s more of a FS skater. The FS, I feel like, is lacking a little pizzazz, lacking something interesting, but it still works of course. The 2A on the music is 100% my favorite part, it gives me Hanyu circa 2015 vibes. I actually really like POTO programs, even though its such an overused piece of music, and while Yuhana’s FS is a little boring, not gonna lie, its definitely still a very good program. Her SP is fast, interesting and keeps my attention. It really caught my eye at Finlandia and now I like it even more.
10. Yuna Shiraiwa - JPN
Ugh. I really like both of Yuna’s programs this season, but it seems her jumps don’t really like to be landed. Yuna’s also a rather versatile skater and can perform various styles well, but I find her “princess” programs really pretty and elegant, and not boring at all. So, I really like her SP. Her FS dress is kind of creepy, but the program itself is slightly boring. Maybe if she lands her jumps it would be better. I love her jump landings and her SS.
Tumblr media
11. Stanislava Konstantinova - RUS I actually kind of like Stasya. She has a very ladylike and mature way of skating (perhaps because she looks so tall) and her jumps look really pretty in the air. Shame she has forgotten how to land them. Again, both her programs this season are good, especially the SP, and yet, her jumps have decided they simply will not be landed (or rotated). There’s a lot of drama in her FS and she performs it quite well, but you can see that her mistakes can affect her performance. Hopefully Stasya can perform at least one of her programs clean this season, they really have a lot of potential.
Also Shoma getting 4th is actually good enough for me. From 8th to 4th, big improvement! Those GOEs for Samarin though...
