2024: week 20
uh: look, as is wont to happen, i enter a new fandom, i spend a feverish couple of weeks waking from the dead of sleep at 4am to Look At The Internet. i lose my mind and become otherwise entirely dysfunctional in real life. this is super unfortunate as this week i also returned to my regular day job.
sportsballs: so many sportsballs. chelsea took the wsl; port adelaide played the most exciting game of afl in years; i have become both a knifeshoes hockey fan with the pwhl finals happening and am also watching the ncaa softball postseason. i don't even recognise myself anymore.
did literally anything else happen last week? the fuck if i know.

the silver bullets but if they were a baseball team
hi and hello my friends. as u all know (and possibly see from my page) i've grown up a huge philadelphia sports fan all my life, and with the nfl season starting up and mlb season coming to a close (and my phillies in the postseason!) i decided that this was necessary as a development for the silver bullets girls as we have a big enough crew to get a full starting lineup and starting pitcher (along with our coach/manager birdie faulkner, rip queen!) PLEASE ENJOY!!!
silver bullet's team (baseball) manager: birdie 'cap'n' faulkner
no doubt birdie faulkner (in this AU i guess?!) would be alive and well and a damn-good manager for the silver bullets ball club. she's a natural-born leader, would probably actively fight any other team if someone messed with her girls and is undoubtedly someone who wants to do whatever it takes to win. when she used to play, she was one of the most efficient players at first base. in her 5th year as manager for the silver bullets. the girls call her cap'n - she's the leader of this time in every way possible.
(main) pitcher: carrie 'bergie' achterberg
1st starting rotation pitcher for the silver bullets is carrie achterberg, affectionately known by the team, her fellow players, and the fans as bergie. when bergie is up on the mound and pitching for her team, defense knows they can win if they can put up the numbers on offense. bergie is reliable, a fan-favorite despite her obvious stubbornness that is apparent even on the TV screen or radio (if you were to say, when the fans see bergie like that, they know she's passionate about her team and about winning). in her 4th year of a 10 year contract with the silver bullets. a pretty efficient left-hand pitcher (LHP) on the mound.
1st base: bessie 'bes' carlisle
1st basemen bessie carlisle is one of the voices of the team that's been there ever since birdie faulkner got the group together. originally was in the minor leagues for a few years before the silver bullets organization picked her up for their AAA (Triple A) minor league. she played a few games, put up some good numbers, was efficient at the plate, and consistently driving in runs. she played out the rest of her second season in the majors for the silver bullets and was signed to a major league contract for 5 years thereafter. in her 4th year of her 5 year contract with the silver bullets. bes not only is beloved by the fans, but her jersey usually is in the top three with sales! leads an organization that raises money to get kids into baseball, softball, etc...!
2nd base: marjorie 'margie' harlowe
2nd basemen majorie harlowe had one of the most productive rookie seasons after getting drafted by the silver bullets 3 years prior. a few years in the minors did her well and after successfully getting called-up into the majors with high expectations, she soared. still on her rookie contract, she continued to have productive at-bats through spring training and has high expectations for the new season. she quickly gained a large fanbase, is usually in the clubhouse with the best playlists for postgame wins or practice, and had one of the most memorable postgame interviews where she proceeded to tearfully recall the double ground-out, final out, (in which she caught the ball, got the out at second, threw the ball to bessie carlisle and proceeded to scream with joy) that sent the silver bullets into the previous postseason, while equally rambling and interjecting with a thousand different ways to say 'oh-my-god'. safe to say, margie is a fan-favorite. in her 2nd year with the silver bullets, on her rookie contract.
3rd base: vivian 'viv' ratcliff
tall, lean, a bit quiet, but one of the most improved of the team, 3rd basemen vivian ratcliff led the league in the previous season in RBIs and hopes to make the same impact moving forward into the season. she spent multiple years in the minors, before getting called up a few seasons back when one of their infielders went down and was injured the rest of the season. she stayed on a rookie contract for a few years, before she was signed onto a 4 year contract. is most widely known for her defense at third base, along with her rather hilarious postgame tweets that the fans can't seem to get enough of. in her 4th year of her 4-year contract with the silver bullets. viv has joined multiple pregame and postgame interviews and usually has quite the opinion on batting practice - key-word 'just hit the damn-ball'.
shortstop: kennedy 'kenny' farley
shortstop kennedy farley was once told as a kid that she couldn't play shortstop - it was too hard, it was the hardest defensively to play, and she wasn't good enough for the spot. she played her way into the draft, through the minors and became one of the most efficient shortstops in the league. longtime boyfriend, john egan, always says how he knew she'd be one of the best (and she usually tells him off, but secretly appreciates it more than anything). passionate player, has great at-bats, leads the team in homeruns (HRs), and has gotten in a FEW near-fights with other teams (usually defending other members of the silver bullets). in year 3 of her 4-year contract with the silver bullets. kenny has the second-highest selling jersey of team history! best friends with margie harlowe - people call the two sunshine and storm duo!
catcher: annie 'the LT' bradshaw
just signed onto a 5-year contract with the silver bullets and traded from her previous organization, the RPs, catcher annie bradshaw finds herself in a new position - not only needing to gain the trust of her teammates, but of her pitchers. not only needing to call a game, but call a winning game with her pitchers. the silver bullets signed her because of her intelligence at the plate, her ability to throw people out caught stealing bases, and her rather productive at bats that get pitchers throwing full counts, before sending a ball into the field. and she easily reads a field and communicates that with her pitchers. in her 1st year of her 5-year contract with the silver bullets. affectionately called the LT, or lieutenant by the girls because of her willingness to lead and step up to the plate, while also being focused, alert, and disciplined. highly respected around the league.
left field: marianne 'mari' salinger
outfielder marianne salinger was brought up from the minor leagues when left-fielder matilda kerkering went down with a torn achillies. on her rookie contract, mari assisted with getting the silver bullets into the postseason previously with her ability to turn a few hits into big moments, with RBIs or base-hits whenever she can make it happen. through her second year, she struggled with her at-bats and was sent back to the minors for assignment. she worked hard, improved and came back with a huge fan reception and succeeded highly throughout the rest of the season. in her third season, injury plagued her capabilities to play and she finished out the season only playing 1/8 of the games. now in her fourth year, and having just signed a 3-year contract, she's hoping to make a bigger impact and big a key-player for her teammates. close friends with francis montez, having both started in the minors together, with francis being called up a few months previous. in her 4th year with the silver bullets, in the first year of her contract. mari gave the spring training hype speech for the training and finished it off far-too emotional and it sent the team into tears.
center field: judy 'rib-ee' rybinski
rookie outfielder judy rybinski is one of the fastest outfielders of the league. she catches pop-ups and fly-outs that you see on TV and think 'yeah there's no way you can catch that' - and she DOES. it is her first year in the majors, after having been drafted by the silver bullets two years ago and spending some time putting in the work in the minors. now, in her first major league season, she's already put up efficient numbers and given solid at-bats. her stellar defense from the minors has already shown itself on the field, but at times she's struggled to really see the ball and gets far more strikeouts than she would've liked. BUT, she works hard before games, usually having batting practice by herself or with guidance from bradshaw and carlisle. she's a fan favorite, with many tweets trending after games simply stating 'JUDY RYBINSKI MUST BE PROTECTED', and currently has the highest selling jersey on the team, along with high expectations. in her first year of her rookie contract. rib-ee comes from her childhood tee-ball league when she consistently hit the most RBIs or RIB-Es. it seemed to stick! :)
right field: paulina 'pauli/stag' stagliano
outfielder paulina stagliano, admittedly, has more of a carefree, nonchalant, possibly too-sarcastic personality for baseball, but she makes it work??!?! she finished her contract on a previous team, became a free agent, and signed with the silver bullets on a 5-year contract and didn't really meet the expectations she was supposed to have in her first year. poor at-bats, occasional injury, and struggles in the outfield. she worked through the offseason and spring training and found her stride and in her second-year, in the first game, hit a walk-off homerun that gave one of the most beloved postgame interviews constantly recalled by the team and by carrie achterberg herself [achterberg stating she'd never seen pauli or the stag so emotional yet pissed off at the same time while having the gatorade cooler dumped over her head]. a beloved player by the fans, leading an established organization for veterans like her father needing support for aid, housing and food, she finds herself heading into her 3rd year of her 5-year contract with the silver bullets.
DH: francis 'monty' montez
designated hitter francis montez stepped up to expectations and succeeded them in full. back in college, she quickly rose through the ranks as a freshmen and got first spot as DH over the original DH who'd been on the college team for a few years. with such high expectations, she got much more hate than was bargained for - therefore, she continued to work, develop her character, her capability to play ball, her work at-bat and at the plate, and got drafted by the silver bullets and quickly got called up to the majors after a few months in the minors. a natural spokeswoman for the silver bullet screw, she signed an 8-year contract with the silver bullets and has entered her 4th year on the team. affectionately called monty, the TV and/or radio announcers typically call 'THERE GOES MONTY' every time she hits a homer that's out of the ballpark. yeah, there's shirts with the quote, signs, kids usually have her sign it on jerseys and shirts, too. they even have a drink in the ballpark called the monty - alcoholic and nonalcoholic. increased revenue for the sillver bullets exponentially because of both her character, her fame and her fanbase at the ballpark that couldn't wait to come see what monty could do at the plate!
yeah....THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN!!!!! :D

Get to me know sports edition: (it’s MLB postseason)
I played softball for 10 years, from slow pitch to travel, from rec to high school, with two championships, 5 mvps, have come in 1st-4th place. I played every position except catcher. Had been hit in my ankles, eblow, back, butt...the back of my neck, and on a hilarious foul ball- hit my boobs 😂 on the last game of my high school team as a senior, I hit what would have been a triple, until I rounded first and a random charlie horse cramped my calf and took me down and out of the game. I got hit in the back of the neck on a ground ball- the pitcher fielded it and throw a rocket to first, got me just an inch from my spine and after my dad had a heart attack about it and after I cried from pain. He told me to steal second and I did.
Here are the things I miss about my favorite sport:
-The smell of the grass.
-The sound of my cleats.
-My bat...that I used so much so so long it legitimately cracked. It was aluminum.
-Cheers.
-Making amazing plays that impressed my father and other coaches.
-Getting dirty- dirt, clay and grass stains.
-Playing in the rain.
-The pure adrenaline of the game.
-The sound of the ball off the bat.
-Those blue slushies after a game.
-Checkers fries after the game.
-Orange slices.
-Sunflower seeds.
-Not to be gross, but spitting on the grass.
-The smell of my glove.
-Playing with my glove until it literally fell apart.
-Stitch bruises (a bruise with red stitch marks like on the softball/baseball).
-My name on the back of my jersey.
-The greatest umpire who sang Beatles songs on the field.
-Showing up any boy who thought I couldn’t play, or didn’t pick me for their teams because I was a girl.
-The boys who soon realized this and did pick me as their first choice because I was that good.
I really miss playing

For those looking for any silver lining they can during this election, may be a distraction from the vote count; I would like to share the story of how Mississippi got rid of the confederate symbol on their flag and replaced it with the above flag, which I think is one of the more beautiful state flags. Don’t get me wrong, they’re always going to be a red state but I feel like the story below is an image of what advocacy and political action can do. Keep up the faith, we’re gonna make sure every vote is counted it’ll just take persistence and patience.
From: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Mississippi
A proposal floated by several members of the Legislature was to create a new Mississippi flag. This flag, with a yet-to-be-determined design that did not include any Confederate images, would be used alongside the current flag. This plan was soundly rejected by Governor Tate Reeves who compared it to the separate but equal doctrine, stating that if implemented it wouldn't "satisfy either side of this debate".[67]
Response Edit
On June 18, 2020, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, Greg Sankey, announced the SEC would consider banning championship events in Mississippi until the flag is changed. The SEC is the athletic conference for the two largest universities in Mississippi, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.[68] The announcement by the conference was followed by support of changing the flag from Chancellor Glenn Boyce of The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and President Mark E. Keenum of Mississippi State University.[69][70] The athletic directors of the universities, Keith Carter (Ole Miss) and John Cohen (Mississippi State), also supported changing the flag, along with various coaches from the universities.[71][72][73][74] On June 19, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) banned all post-season play from occurring in Mississippi until the flag is changed. The NCAA had previously banned predetermined events such as football bowl games and men's basketball tournament games in 2001 from occurring in the state. The new rule also bans merit-based championship sites, such as baseball regionals, softball regionals, women's basketball tournament games and tennis tournament games. Ole Miss hosted both baseball and softball regionals in 2019. Mississippi State hosted a baseball regional, men's tennis tournament games and women's basketball tournament games in 2019.[75]
Also on June 19, the leaders of the eight public universities in Mississippi (Alcorn State University, Delta State University, Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi Valley State University, University of Mississippi and University of Southern Mississippi) issued a joint statement calling for a new state flag.[76] On June 22, Conference USA banned all postseason play in Mississippi until the removal of the Confederate emblem from the state flag.[77] Conference USA is home to the state's third largest university, Southern Miss, and has hosted its annual baseball tournament in Mississippi for eight of the past nine years. On June 23, presidents of the fifteen community colleges in Mississippi issued a joint statement showing their support for a new flag.[78]
The Mississippi Baptist Convention condemned the current state flag on June 23, 2020. In a statement, Baptist leaders said: "The racial overtones of the flag's appearance make this discussion a moral issue. Since the principal teachings of Scripture are opposed to racism, a stand against such is a matter of biblical morality."[79]
Walmart announced that it would cease displaying the state flag at its 85 Mississippi store locations on June 23, 2020.[80] The retailer normally displays the applicable state flag alongside the U.S. national flag at its locations in the U.S.[81]
Legislative action Edit
On June 27, 2020, the Mississippi Legislature passed a resolution, House Concurrent Resolution 79, that suspended rules in the legislative chambers in order to debate and vote on a bill to remove and replace the state flag. The motion was passed with the House approving by a vote of 85–34 and the Senate approving by a vote of 36–14.[82][83][84][85]
On June 28, 2020, the Legislature passed a bill, House Bill 1796, that would relinquish the state flag, remove the state flag from public buildings within 15 days of the bill's effective date, and constitute a nine-member commission to design a new flag that would be put to voters in a referendum to be held in November 2020.[86][13] The bill required that the Confederate battle flag not be included on the proposed design, and the motto "In God We Trust" be included,[87] as Georgia did when it removed the Confederate emblem from its state flag in 2003. In the House, the bill was passed by 91 in favor and 23 against.[65] In the Senate, the bill was passed with 37 in favor and 14 against.[88]
Earlier that weekend, Governor Tate Reeves had stated that he would sign any flag bill passed that weekend by the Legislature into law.[89] Subsequently, after the Legislature passed the bill, a spokesperson for the governor stated: "The governor does not want to rush this moment in history for our state. Once ... he's had the opportunity to review it, Gov. Reeves will sign the bill in the coming days."[65] Reeves then signed the flag bill into law on June 30, 2020. As the legislation repealed the sections of the Mississippi State Code which made provisions for a state flag, namely Section 3-3-16, Mississippi ceased once again to have an official state flag at this point.[15][90]
Flag commission and referendum Edit
Under the terms of House Bill 1796 (approved by Governor on June 30, 2020), a body known as the Commission to Redesign the Mississippi State Flag would be constituted to suggest a design for a new state flag no later than September 14, 2020. The act stipulated that any design proposed by the commission must include the words "In God We Trust" and must not contain the Confederate battle flag. The commission consists of nine members, three of which were appointed by the Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, three members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, and three by the Governor. Former state Supreme Court Justice Reuben V. Anderson was elected as the commission's chairman at its first meeting on July 22.
The proposed design will then be subject to a referendum to be held concurrently with the general election on November 3, 2020. Should the referendum result in a "yes" vote for the proposed design, then the design will be officially adopted as the new state flag of Mississippi during the next regular legislative session. Should the referendum result in a "no" vote for the proposed design, the commission will reconvene and propose different designs. The legislation states that further referenda can then be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of a year in which the commission makes a new recommendation until a "yes" vote is achieved. Mississippi will remain without an official state flag until a new one is adopted through this process.[92]
Controversy in new flag requirements Edit
The act stipulated that the new flag must include the words "In God We Trust." The Satanic Temple has threatened to sue Mississippi if the controversial phrase[93] is included on the flag.[94][95] Americans United for Separation of Church and State declared the state's actions as trading "a white nationalist symbol for a Christian nationalist one."[96] Both The American Humanist Association and Americans United for Separation of Church and State have published their own editorials decrying the use of the phrase on a new flag.[97][98]
Call for public submissions Edit
The commission invited public submissions for ideas for a new state flag in mid-July 2020. In accordance with the rules imposed by House Bill 1796, designs would only be accepted if they contained the words "In God We Trust" and not include the Confederate battle flag. The commission also added that suggestions would need to be unique and adhere to principles of the North American Vexillological Association: that the design should use only two or three basic colors, be simple enough for a child to draw, and have meaningful symbolism. Entries were to be submitted by email or by post and be received by the commission by August 13, 2020 to be considered.[99] The deadline was moved to August 1st to allow time for the commission to complete the selection process.
More than 2000 submissions (other estimates put this figure at 2800 images but a few images were erroneously repeated) meeting the legislative criteria were received and displayed on a public gallery website.[101] Each of the 9 commission members picked 25 flags, narrowing the list down to 147.[102] While a modified Hospitality flag did not proceed beyond the first round, a similar-looking "Mosquito flag" briefly did,[103] apparently due to a commissioner's typographical error.[104] At an August 14 meeting, the commission announced that they had selected nine finalists. These finalists, depicting various elements including a representation of the Mississippi River, magnolias, and stars composed of diamonds significant to the Choctaw nation, had either red, white, and blue or green and white color schemes. The commission announced that they would narrow these designs down to five finalists at its next meeting on August 18.[105][106] Five finalists were published on August 18,[107] and this was reduced to two flags on August 25.[108][109]
The final two flags were the "Great River Flag"[110] designed by Micah Whitson and the "The New Magnolia" designed by Rocky Vaughan, Sue Anna Joe, and Kara Giles.[111]
On September 2, the commission voted 8–1 to put the New Magnolia flag on the November ballot. Slight modifications were made to the original design, including making the text bolder and the red and gold bars thicker. The flag will officially be referred to as the "In God We Trust Flag".[17] Rocky Vaughan is credited with designing the flag's overall layout, with design support provided by Kara Giles, Dominique Pugh, and Sue Anna Joe (who created the magnolia illustration featured in the center). Micah Whitson was also given credit for the appearance of the first nations star.[112] [113] The flag was officially adopted by a vote of the people on November 3, 2020.

One of the girls that I used to play with posted the second picture with the caption, “People always ask me what my favorite college softball memory was. Well, it was this day ”. The truth is while this day was a good day for everyone else, I remember this day being a really sad memory.
My coach was verbally abusive and didn’t communicate well with people who didn’t think like she did. In fact, she barely communicated at all. She never really liked me and the people pleaser in me hated that, she tried multiple times to get me on medication for my anxiety and told me I was overreacting anytime I had a panic attack, asked for help when I felt alone, anything. It got to the point where I was so afraid of just showing up.
She pulled me aside that day and told me and a few of my other teammates that were all upperclassman that we weren’t going to be playing the rest of postseason. She told me that I can go to sectionals if I wanted to but not as a player just as bench support or as scorekeeper. All the work just to sit the bench.
I don’t think she understood the hurt her words had and the weight it put on my shoulders, if I wasn’t going to be respected, why should I stay? Do I give up something I spent 16 years of my life working to just be decent? Would it be worth it? In the end giving it up to pursue other interests was what I needed it was a nice baby step into real adulthood and I’m grateful for how things played out in the end. But I will always look back at this day, look back at the pictures and remember the hurt I felt, I will look at the sadness in my eyes and wonder how things could have been different had I stayed.
ALL THAT TO SAY, it’s funny to me how some people’s best memories can also be someone else’s worst memories.
