Hi! I really love your work— do you have any advice for someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience drawing human forms/anatomy? I dont really know where to start 😅
Thank you!!!! ^_^
So first off, bear with me, I'm going to point you to some of my old old art. In general, any 'progress'/tutorial type stuff i post goes into the "wip" tag: freebooter4ever.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/wip
The rest of this discussion is going under a cut lol
I've been drawing since i was a kid - as my grandma likes to tell it i would sit quietly at the card table next to her and make her draw with me because "everyone can draw, grandma". Sometime around high school i got it into my head that i needed a 'class' to understand anatomy, as if it was just this magical thing i would suddenly understand. (college was useless) The truth is i didnt start getting better until recently, when i gave up trying to 'learn' anatomy and just started studying bodies. That sounds weird, but i don't know how else to describe it? If someone told me ages ago that i could learn anatomy the same way i self-disciplined myself into being able to pull out computer science concepts at the drop of the hat, i feel like i wouldn't have wasted so much time but anyway...
Check out any doodles before my mchanzo era for drawings that i did prior to getting serious about practice studies: freebooter4ever.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/mchanzo. Terrible anatomy. Atrocious. (with one exception that i still like which is a poster on sasha bees' wall hey bees if you're reading this) 2016 ish.
THEN 2017 i lost my job, moved away from pittsburgh, missed my DJ friends, watched a documentary on netflix about st*ve aoki (after watching everything vaguely DJ related on the streaming service lol), and the aoki drawing era begins: freebooter4ever.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/steve%20aoki. I joke that the way I learned anatomy was by becoming obsessed with a DJ who contorts himself into very strange positions and has photographers that take photos of him from LITERALLY every angle and who tends to walk around half naked an unusually large amount of time but like...that's literally what happened. Not that im saying you have to start drawing half naked DJ's...just find a subject you dont mind drawing hours of studies from and it makes it a lot easier.
When I'm doing 'studies' I tend to do two separate drawings. Initially I literally just 'study' what I'm looking at - I put it in photoshop and trace the lines that I see. I don't OUTLINE it, there is a huge difference. A lot of times the lines that stand out are not the outlines but rather a dominant shadow or sharp edge. After I feel like I've got a good handle on it, I do another drawing of the pose freehand. Then I take the original photo and put it underneath that drawing and check where I've messed up. If I'm completely off I throw it away and start again, lol. If there's a few errors I fix them. More and more lately I find that the freehand drawing is fairly accurate with anatomy unless it's an unusual or challenging perspective. I break this down more in this post using joe as an example: https://freebooter4ever.tumblr.com/post/633653906052923392/its-been-a-while-since-ive-posted-one-of-these
Those study drawings rarely see the light of day. I just delete them when I'm done because i didn't have an...aim...? For the drawing. They just were to learn.
The doodles that I post on here? Some of the simpler ones are practice sketches from gifs - i will have a gif running next to my drawing and will try to draw what i see, freehand. Some of the more complicated drawings/portraits are from photos - but there's usually something i see in the photo that i want to convey? Like light? or a specific part of anatomy? I dunno, i make shit up as i go.
AND THEN there's my favorite, when i have done all this practice and i can do shit like drawing characters from my imagination. Like kenny hugging his cat. These don't have any reference - im just relying on my memory of anatomy i've drawn in the past.
I dunno. Dont let bad anatomy get you down, just keep trying. My anatomy hero - a sculptor ethan idolized and i idolize by default - even said himself that he doesn't feel like an 'expert', and he's in his 40's and has been doing this shit for decades. Just draw!!! The more you do it, the more you'll start to see what you like, and how you can make it how you like even more. I still think my anatomy is bad, im still embarrassed by it. But i also know i've gotten better because i can see it now.
ANYWAY this is long, im exhausted, i have to go to bed now :) and i was serious about scheduling an abs livestream. Maybe this weekend if im ambitious.

14 Slice of Life Anime to Watch
For those who don’t watch anime, the first thing that comes to mind at the mention of the word “anime” is those pervertic lewd jokes which they’ve seen on clips and meme circulating the internet. I don’t even know what anime are those.
But little do they know of the wide variety of genres available from war action, crime thriller, historical fiction to slice of life. So sharing here is a list of slice of life anime which I’ve watched and hoping to discover more of such genres.
They’re basically a relatable and chill anime with no complex plot involving die-hard enemies out to destroy you, that sort of thing, the only enemy these characters are trying to defeat is life itself or their inner-self.
They’re just stories of characters just going about their daily lives, trying to find their place in the world. I not only like the heartwarming relationships they shared but the scenery of these places too which are simply beautiful.
They’re so pleasant to watch. It's kind of like the anime version of curling up under the blanket on a rainy afternoon and just feeling good, makes you feel all calm and relax, when you simply want to chill and switch off your mind. And hey, if you know any similar type of anime that I don’t, please share with me! I’m currently looking for more of such anime to watch in these stressful and uncertain times!
Only Yesterday (1991)
Taeko Okajima is single 27 year old who has lived her whole life in Tokyo. She decides to take a trip to visit her family in the rural countryside of Yamagata to get away from the city life. Hanasaku Iroha (2011)

The story takes place in the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.
Flying Witch (2016)
The story is about Makoto, a young witch from Yokohama, who moves to Hirosaki, Aomori to live with relatives as part of her training. What follows is Makoto's daily life as she gets used to her new environment. Her relatives and the new friends she makes there are introduced to the customs and peculiarities of witchcraft. It’s kind of like Kiki’s Delivery Service with a touch of Harry Potter.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō (1998)
Set in a peaceful, post-cataclysmic world where mankind is in decline after an environmental disaster. The reduced human population has reverted to a simpler life. It follows the story of Alpha Hatsuseno who is an android that runs an out-of-the-way coffee shop, on the lonely coast of the Miura Peninsula of Japan, while her human "owner" is on a trip of indefinite length. It shows her daily activities, either alone, with customers, or on occasional trips through the countryside. It brings out the small wonders of everyday life.
Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club (2017)
It follows the life of Hiromi who just moved from Nagasaki to Kamakura and wants to learn the ride a bicycle in order to explore the coastal city! Her passion for cycling allowed her to make new friends with similar interest, and eventually forming their own cycling club in school, attracting more people as they discover the wonders of Kamakura and friendship. There’s even a cycling tip video clip at the end of every episode, so better watch out for it if you’re interested in cycling!

An ongoing anime about a lonely girl, Koguma, who lives alone with no parents and no friends nor hobbies feeling her life empty, until one day, when she bought an affordable second hand super cub bike to ride to school that her life began to change gradually, from meeting new friends with similar interest, to exploring new places she’s never been to before, feeling her life began to expand.

A working list of parallels and connections between Aaron and Rameses in The Prince of Egypt
originally posted in 2016 [x].
I’ve been really reticent to examine this topic in depth, for various reasons*, but I’m finally, slowly opening the box. There is a lot to parse, and I have started to write an analysis (or two)…
Anyway, I’m using a cut so that I can edit and add to this list more freely.
These are some jumping-off points, things that highlight interesting similarities and fundamental differences:
Both miss a formative period of Moses’ life.
This is especially true in Aaron’s case because he has missed out on all of Moses’ life.
Both assume leadership roles while Moses is in Midian. Rameses becomes Pharaoh, while (along with Miriam) Aaron speaks for the Hebrew people. (I find this absolutely gut-wrenching in the way it places the characters in a kind of direct opposition: “Pharaoh still has the power over our lives,” indeed.)
Crucially, neither change in status is shown on screen.
It’s worth noting that Aaron’s role throughout the film is representing his people’s doubts and concerns. But I also think it’s something that develops as he grows/ages...
The mud pit scene immediately follows Moses’ confrontation with Rameses, an interesting ordering of events in itself. Both Moses and the audience see Rameses as Pharaoh and see Aaron in his more proactive role — for the first time. There’s a dual shock/reveal, and a great contrast. This is definitely something I want to explore more.
Dialogue from these scenes:
“I do not know this God.” vs. “God? When did God start caring about any of us?” On the surface, they just sound angry, or faithless. However, Aaron has an intimate knowledge and experience with the God of his people. His bitterness and disillusionment stems from being an insider. On the other hand, Rameses is not only outside this experience but also speaks condescendingly about God as the “other.”
“Thanks to your God. Or is it thanks… to you?” vs. “In fact, Moses, when did you start caring about slaves?” Their lines to Moses, with the emphasis on “you,” reveal so much (different) information!
I’m apparently never going to be able to leave the mud pit.
Aaron’s dynamic with Miriam can be compared to Rameses’ dynamic with Moses. Aaron’s most important family/relationship is with his sister. Rameses is closest with Moses.
I feel that a simpler reading could be this: Aaron depends on Miriam, and Rameses depends on Moses. Although there is something of a leader-follower dynamic created by their personalities (Aaron and Rameses (especially teenage Rameses) are more cautious and unsure about things; Miriam and Moses (especially teenage Moses) are more daring and confident), there’s more beneath the surface.
Rameses and Moses’ relationship becomes very unbalanced**, and unhealthy. They fall apart, not because theirs isn’t a legitimate bond (they are brothers), but because their desires and values are quite different. **balanced, though, in the sense that their desires, regarding slavery, are opposite.
Miriam and Aaron’s relationship, by contrast, is balanced (hope and doubt). There’s a lot to be said about how they look out for one another and have had to survive together.
Rameses’ and Aaron’s caution and insecurities stem from very different places. Furthermore, Rameses’ insecurities often earn him the pity of fans/viewers, whereas Aaron’s fearfulness is typically interpreted as cowardice. I have a lot of thoughts about this.
Rameses doesn’t care about the suffering of the Hebrews, who are to him merely slaves, while Aaron stands for the suffering of his people, and the recovery of their/his hope.
Of course, their respective relationships with Moses are also very important.
As Rameses and Moses pull apart, Aaron and Moses come together (visual parallels).
Aaron has a lot to give to his relationship with Moses. He also has the experiential knowledge — the cultural knowledge — that Rameses lacks (first mentioned in this post).
There is potential to contrast the effects of Yocheved’s parenting (and memories) on Aaron with the effects of Seti’s on Rameses.
Rameses’ fear of being the weak link comes from Seti.
It’s unknown when Yocheved dies. How old are Miriam and Aaron when this happens? (Also, I think that/love that Aaron has been greatly influenced/shaped by these two wonderful women: Yocheved and Miriam.)
There are other visual parallels:
There’s one in particular that I’m probably going to use to drive one of my analyses. I’m not going to give it away here.
One of these occurs at the beginning of the movie: I’m thinking about the ways Aaron and Rameses interact with their mothers.
Another example: the hugs that Rameses and Aaron give Moses. They both lift him off the ground.
On January 7, 2017, I wrote a more in-depth analysis which can be found here.
Last edited: 3/1/17 — It’s unlikely that I will write another analysis post besides the one I posted on January 7, so I’ve added a few of those notes here; 8/22/18
* I can analyze/intellectualize the movie and its meta, but it’s also a rather emotional/personal matter — the themes of loss and separation, and reunion, in this story mirror my own experiences, and I have a lot of empathy for the biological family (from the biological brother/adoptive brother standpoint, I support Aaron and empathize with him).
#the prince of egypt#aaron#rameses#parallels#my stuff#my writing#what a ride it's been delving into these two characters#gonna keep at it though#even though it makes me want to scream sometimes lol....

Concert Diary: Snippets, 2018
“Why are you dedicating entire posts to female artists but then lumping all your male-fronted bands into one post? Isn’t that like reverse-sexism?” Whoa, dude, chill, it’s not like that at all (and reverse-sexism isn’t a thing under the power structures of an already male-dominated, patriarchal soci--nevermind). I just feel like I didn’t have as much to say about these shows, and also what I do have to say about them gets kind of repetitive, so rather than making four short posts, I’m putting them into one. When(/if) I write up my concert diary for 2016-2017, it’ll probably look more like this because I can’t remember as much anymore.
Jimmy Eat World at the Wiltern on September 15, 2018
I wandered around Koreatown for a bit: found a place that resembles Phuoc Loc Tho down in Little Saigon, got some boba from a place I’d previously visited after Anime Expo, visited the library just to see it, went to get KBBQ but they specialized in large parties, so I went to a fusion pizza place and got a KBBQ calzone.
First time in the mezzanine at the Wiltern. Closer/better view of the remarkable ceiling. Seats are tiny and old. I can’t remember anything about the opener; I may or may not have left mid-set to hang out at the bar. The merch table didn’t have any of Jimmy Eat World’s older CDs.
Jimmy Eat World played a lot of songs from Bleed American and Futures, and quite a few songs from Clarity, which was great, but I wish they’d played a few more off of Damage. This was my second time seeing them supporting Integrity Blues, and I still hadn’t listened to the album. New songs sound good, though. I’m sure I’ll get around to it eventually. Jim Adkins, et. al., sounded great, as usual. Encore was bonkers.

Death Cab for Cutie at Hollywood Forever on September 28, 2018
Subway stop was pretty far away, which was fine, I used it as an opportunity to explore the area. Didn’t seem like much was going on in that particular part of LA, though. Kind of a few blocks away from the main Hollywood area. I ate a sort of KBBQ bowl type thing, the amount of toppings reminded me of poke.
It was a long walk through the cemetery before we made it to the performance area. Lots of people were sprawled out on their picnic blankets. I stood a bit closer to the stage. The opener was okay, kind of sounded like early Paramore. Lead singer was cute, she had an energy reminiscent of female J-pop/rock acts.
First time seeing Death Cab. Ben Gibbard sounds exactly like he does on their albums. There were a couple songs I wish they'd played, but overall I'm pretty satisfied with the setlist. Quite a few from Transatlanticism, Plans, and Narrow Stairs. Like the Jimmy Eat World show, I hadn't listened to the newest Death Cab album. New songs were nice. Encore was bonkers.

Underoath at the Shrine Expo Hall on November 9, 2018
I met up with my brother to eat at a mediterranean place near where he works. He’s been there before and still got us lost, but we found it. I took the subway from there to the venue. There’s a part of it that’s above ground. I’ve seen these trains while walking around at Anime Expo, but didn’t make the connection that they were, um, connected. I think the venue’s part of USC. It was big and confusing.
I got there a bit late and completely missed the first opener. I stuck around for the second and third ones, but I didn’t particularly enjoy them. I probably would’ve a few years ago.
First time seeing Underoath. Kind of a big deal for me because at one point Aaron left, then they broke up, then they got back together (with Aaron!) again. Spencer sounds incredible live. Aaron’s pretty great on drums, but his mic was a bit low, so I couldn’t hear his singing a lot of the time. Mostly satisfied with the setlist, lots of They’re Only Chasing Safety, Define the Great Line, and Lost in the Sound of Separation, but I wish they’d played a bit more from Disambiguation. Like the Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie shows, I hadn’t listened to the newest Underoath album. New songs were nice. Light show was bonkers. Encore was bonkers.

Thrice at the Wiltern on November 18, 2018
I can’t remember what/where I ate. Google Maps Timeline isn’t telling me anything. Oh, right, it might’ve been that one time I had Korean noodle soup. Kind of like pho, but the meat is simpler and there was kimchi on the side, which is, of course, a bit spicy. Soup was bland at first because you had to season it yourself with the salt they gave you, which was a nice bit of customization.
I walked out on both of the openers. I would’ve probably liked them a few years ago, they just aren’t my thing at the moment. I think I got nachos. The merch table didn’t have Thrice’s older CDs.
Pit was special tickets instead of first-come-first-serve. I stood behind the sound guys. I forgot how great Teppei is. “Daedalus” made me cry. Not enough Alchemy Index on the setlist, but I was mostly satisfied, considering I’d seen them play those songs before. Like the Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab for Cutie, and Underoath shows, I hadn’t listened to the newest Thrice album. New songs were nice. Light show was bonkers. Encore was bonkers.

Missed |Chapter One| A Bucky Barnes x Reader Series
Summary: The reader spends over a year waiting for Bucky to be rid of his demons, all the while dealing with her own. Now that he’s healed, the pair of them have to navigate the tricky situation that, as Bucky puts it, is the end of the world.
A/N: Yes, another series! I know it’s been two months since I updated CIC, but Infinity War has sparked some inspiration within me. Those of you who have seen it, i’m sure are suffering just as I am, so to ease that sadness, I thought I’d start a new series in which Bucky is a happy boy. This will eventually follow many plot points shown in Avengers: Infinity War, but starts out when Bucky and the reader reside in Wakanda. THERE ARE NO INFINITY WAR SPOILERS IN THIS CHAPTER! The title of the series will most likely change but I want to get this posted tonight so. Happy Reading! If you’d like to be tagged let me know, and I love feedback so hit me with it!
Chapter Note: Bucky will have woken up a year prior to the events in Infinity War. The story begins with him waking up, but the writing not in italic is the current time the reader and Bucky are living in. Anything in italics is past events, and past events will include dates. Unless otherwise stated, all scenes are in Wakanda.
Wakanda, 2017
"Are you playing around with that man again?" A female voice called, followed by the sound of childish laughter. The woman smiled down at the three children, continuing to playfully scold them as a burly man emerged from the small hut behind the group. The three adolescents scurried away, shouting words in their native tongue, giggling as they ran. He approached her, his eyes scouring the new environment. She waited until the children were into the forest before speaking again.
"Good morning, Seargent Barnes." Her voice drifted to his ears, but his mind was elsewhere as he stared at the edge of the water.
"Bucky." He corrected automatically, his voice gruff. He paused a moment, his attention turning back to her. "Thank you," He spoke softly, and she gave him a smile.
Her hand found his arm, her touch reassuring him. "Come, much more for you to learn..."
A soft knock on the door drew her attention from the window, the large Wakandan forest having peaked her interest. She turned around, her mouth opening to tell T'Challa she was busy, but her lips settled into a grin as her eyes found the source of the noise. (Y/N) placed the mug of tea onto the glass table and took a step towards him.
"I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever come around." She teased, her voice soft and inviting. She slowly walked another few feet towards him, her eyes searching his for any sign of discomfort. "You can come in.. you know, if you want to." Her confidence was slowly fading, her commonly awkward demeanor making an appearance.
He nodded, entering the room and closing the glass door behind him. He took long strides in her direction but came to a halt several feet out of reach. He longed to touch her, he missed her, but his feet remained planted where he had stopped. Silence consumed both of them, and finally after moments of quiet, he spoke.
"They wanted to be sure the treatment was.. successful," He offered, his teeth finding his bottom lip in a painful manner. She wanted to tell him to stop, as she used to, but it was comforting to know he was nervous too.
"Yes, Shuri told me." (Y/N) was trying to reassure him, make light conversation, but the things she'd wanted to say so many months ago were right on the tip of her tongue. She went to blurt, the tub of unspoken words overflowing, but Bucky beat her to it, effectively silencing her.
"I wanted to come sooner, but I wasn't sure if you'd want me around." He admitted, his eyes, once focused on the floor darting up to find hers. They were filling with unshed tears, an unusual show of emotion. She'd told herself she wouldn't cry. This wasn't about her.
"Please don't cry, Doll."
Wakanda, 2016
"Please don't cry, Doll," He asked her, his right hand finding the soft skin of her cheek. She brushed him off and turned away, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. As soon as she composed herself, she walked out of the lab, finding Steve waiting for her in the hallway.
His eyes begged the question they'd been putting off for weeks, and all she could do was shake her head in reply. The Captains arms wrapped around her body and she willed herself not to cry. How selfish, she thought to herself. She wanted to cry over someone she'd known for two years, while Steve put on his bravest face as he lost his best friend, again. He kissed the crown of her head and sighed, pulling away.
"I said everything I needed to say, Steve. He's made his decision." She understood why he was going under, but it didn't make it any simpler. Understanding didn't make her any less angry, or upset.
"Come with me, we'll find the team and.." She cut him off with a wave of her hand, shaking her head.
"I've got no business being involved in your fugitive missions, you know that." He nodded, grinning at her. She managed to smile back, and he gave her one last hug before heading towards the entrance to the lab.
"It's gonna be alright kid."
"I know." She didn't.
"I don't wanna talk about it right now." She blinked and the salty water leaked down her cheeks. Her hand quickly brushed them away before he could make any effort to do so. He nodded, they would have to talk, eventually. But not now, not when they were so close.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked quietly, his eyes moving to her lips. He missed her.
She nodded, taking the small step to close the gap between them. She missed him.
Their lips met, and at that moment, everything was the way it should be.

Christian Dior Purse Photographs And Premium High Res Footage
Apparently, in 1995, France’s then First Lady Bernadette Chirac, gifted Lady Diana with the latest creation from the House of Dior. The Lady Dior was first introduced in 1994 beneath the inventive course of Christian Dior’s successor, Gianfranco Ferré. Initially, the bag was nicknamed Chouchou – French for “the favourite” – and was only renamed a yr after its first launch. wikipedia Harry Archer is an editorial assistant at Editorialist engaged on trend, beauty, and every thing in between. A recent graduate from The London College of Fashion, he has interned at Esquire, the Gay Times, and Attitude magazine. When he is not invested in pop culture, you'll discover him engrossed in a book, working from natural choice, or doing a red wine rendition of Can't Fight the Moonlight from the critically acclaimed movie Coyote Ugly. The bag was first launched in 1994 by then-creative director Gianfranco Ferré, and the style was famously beloved by Princess Diana, who was gifted the accessory by France’s First Lady, Bernadette Chirac, in 1995. Ferraro has posted tons of photographs prior to now few weeks with Dior luggage, backstage, and in full make-up and clothes from the brand, and nearly every time has captioned the picture with #ad, and even credited the photographer. In any case, the folks chosen to promote the Saddle Bag 2.zero all have one thing in common. The reimagined version of the classic Lady Dior purse was the second collaboration between Chicago and Dior Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri. Another one of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s creations for Dior, the Dioevolution Bag proved that trend is all concerning the revolution. First launched in Dior’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection and discontinued by 2020, the Dior Dioevolution Bag was created to make a daring trend statement. The Caro flap bag additionally features the brand’s “CD” emblem with a twist clasp while Dior’s tackle “30 Montaigne” is embossed on the again. Studio Evidence of Research
Here have listed the majority of the research I have carried out for my project and what I have learnt from it.
TLDR: I have used research to prove my problem assumptions, verify that there is an audience within New Zealand and compare against my competitors. This list doesn’t include feedback I received in person from individuals be it, family, peers or professional app developers I got in touch with.
Feedback
Questionnaire - https://forms.gle/S4iZ4cTr5TUpw7m86 Here I have created a questionnaire with more than 20 responses. This questionnaire helped me both validate assumptions that the problems I have presented exist & helping me identify any further problems I have missed. I also found that the problem that I am trying to solve does span across all generations of vehicle owners, not just a select group. This allowed me to confidently continue with my project.
Articles & Online Data
Worn tyre tread article - https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12026609 This article again validates one of the problems I have shown. With 32 fatal crashes in the last 3 years being attributed to a simple vehicle check that hasn’t been carried out. This research actually showed that the maintenance checks feature I had been thinking of is actually more of a priority than I had originally placed it.
Toll road fine totals - https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/384409/new-zealanders-rack-up-10m-in-unpaid-toll-fees This article shows that there are an incredibly high amount of toll road fines. Proving that there is a problem to be solved as New Zealanders as a whole could be prevented from losing over $1 million a year in toll fines. This research showed me the toll notifying feature can be one of the most important for the application.
Toll road revenues and usage - https://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/resources/annual-report-nzta/2018-19/nzta-annual-report-2019-section-c.pdf This research shows that there are 15,927,000 Crossings on toll roads annually. This is a vast amount of times people have to pay a toll fare using the existing systems. This again proves there is a market for my suggested solution.
New Zealand car owner numbers - https://www.transport.govt.nz/mot-resources/transport-dashboard/2-road-transport/rd036-households-with-access-to-motor-vehicles/ 93% of households own a car in New Zealand. This showing that there is a large audience in New Zealand and my project could be viable to be New Zealand based rather than global.
More New Zealand car ownership data - https://www.transport.govt.nz/mot-resources/transport-dashboard/2-road-transport/rd027-vehicle-ownership-per-capita/ There were 4.15 Million Vehicles in New Zealand at the end of 2017, up from 3.9 Million vehicles at the end of 2016. 0.8 Light vehicles per Capita 2018 & average age of vehicles is 14 years. This proving again there are plenty of vehicle owners that could use my proposed application.
Driving license holders in NZ - https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/new-zealand-driver-licence-register-dlr-statistics/ This page again showing there are several that can benefit from my proposed application.
Alternatives Research
Here I have shown my write up for the closest alternatives to the solutions I am offering with my application. The research below has allowed me to differentiate myself from competitors by offering a broader range of features & being more personal to the user.
Web & Mobile Applications
Go Car Finance (Gocar.co.nz) This service offers a package deal in which you pay for everything in one go. You can pay more for a more complete package that helps with WOF and REGO or add mechanical breakdown insurance.
However, this service revolves around setting up a finance loan for payment for a vehicle & therefore is restricted only to those looking to buy a new vehicle. You also have to have comprehensive insurance and it is possible but harder to insure with anyone but their chosen providers. There is a high barrier to entry to use the features that are in competition with Vehicle Mate.
Bonnet Vehicle app
This is an application that helps you keep on top of vehicle maintenance & repairs. This app has a comprehensive system for keeping tabs on your WOFs and repairs, holding data on your WOF history and any work that has been done to your vehicle.
For the system Bonnet has in place to keep tabs on the work done on your vehicle, you have to select one of the garages that they are partnered with. This application also seems slightly more catered to fleet use rather than personal. I also feel that despite promising features, the application is poorly designed, and not very inviting to the user. Vehicle Mate is a more holistic application, including a wider variety of features to help the user.
Independent Garages
VTNZ & AA
VTNZ & AA offer a variety of services. Being garages themselves, they will perform your WoF there, and with VTNZ you are able to link up your REGO renewal date to your WoF dates. With VTNZ you are also able to sign up to a WoF reminder service where they will send you an email when your WoF is expiring soon. This in turn makes automotive admin simpler as some things are taken care of for you at the same time. You can also sort out your license needs with both VTNZ & AA. AA offers car insurance on top of vehicle breakdown assistance which again simplifies the administrative process by centralising all the information to one location.
There are some flaws with AA & VTNZ however. You can only renew your REGO for a maximum of 12 months whereas you can receive a WoF for 3 years if your vehicle was first registered less than 2 years ago, this means the WoF & REGO date alignment at VTNZ only works if you have a vehicle over 3 years old. On top of this, they are independent garages who charge their own prices for your WoF and other servicing needs. This means the customer loses the ability to shop around for the deal best suited to their finances. Furthermore, you are only notified by post of the email of expiring dates, this can be easy to miss or forget.
Vehicle Mate encompasses more and different aspects of vehicle ownership. I believe that Vehicle Mate is different enough from these independent garages that it would be worth having Vehicle Mate just for alerts alone even if you use AA or VTNZ. This being because you can check the app on your phone whenever, giving you valuable information about your renewal dates & safety checks. Vehicle Mate will also keep you in the know about the prices you could be paying elsewhere. Furthermore, you are not notified about toll road usage or other aspects of vehicle ownership that Vehicle Mate provides by AA or VTNZ.

My Personal 10 Fave Webcomics I Read in 2017
So there was this post making the rounds from Vice (yeah I know) about some "journalist's" top 10 comics from 2017 that instantly boiled down to "there were no good comics". The comic community - mainstream and indie alike - were furious. My reaction was to make my own list. I read when I could since I have my own stuff that I was working on, but I read some neat webcomics this year. Some were started this year while most have been going on for a while and are still in-progress. So, below the cut, I shall share my top 10 (in no particular order):
Slightly Damned by Chu - I’ve actually been reading this one since 2007 (Leigh introduced me to it) BUT we both started a major re-read this year, especially since a major event was going on for a while. This one bases itself around the classic “Angel vs Devil” trope, but does twist it around and also includes other races that are caught in the middle. It’s got its hilarious moments but then gives you such mood whiplashes that you better be strapped onto your chair when you read this or your head will fly.
Missing Monday by Elle Skinner - I TECHNICALLY picked this one up late 2016 (so I may as well count it as a 2017 fave, especially as the story got REAL interesting in this past year!)...though little known fact - I was commissioned by the creator to draw the main couple back in 2014, and that’s where the interest began~ This one is a low fantasy, wlw tale involving time/dimensional traveling and some bargaining with dubious creatures~
Nwain: The Night Who Wandered Dream by Terrana Cliff - This one’s really unique. It’s an animated comic (not a Flash comic, but like, each panel is a bit of a storyboarded-style animation). But what really caught my attention was the curious cast of characters. From the eponymous, quick-witted knight from another time, to the cute robot mouse and (currently) a wild cast of contestants from various lands...Their personalities are so colorful and...well..animated!
Radio Silence by Vanessa Stefaniuk - I love music, so I was instantly attracted to this comic. It’s a slice of life, kinda dramatic at times tale of a British rock band that’s trying to make it big, the trials and tribulations involving such things. Something unique about this one is that the band’s songs are legit composed by a relative of the creator, so whenever you see lyrics with music notes...it’s a proper composition. And also major props to Vanessa for doing SO MUCH research on the locations involved in the story. It’s fictionalized, but despite being Canadian, it really feels like it’s a story being told by Brits (and a Scottish lass and a German guy)!
Heroic Shenanigans by Haley Martin - This one shows off where superhero kids go to train and also socialize in a summer camp-like setting. It’s silly but it’s got a little something underneath it all...agendas and questions and whatnot. But overall, a fun tale of three kids coming of age, so to speak.
Magi Soldat by Star Sumiaki - You like anime? Especially the anime of the 80s and 90s? Magical girls and technology? Then you should check this comic out (that is also read AND paged like a manga, so definitely pay attention to those page arrows!). Earth’s in danger, and it’s up to some unlikely “chosen ones” to learn how to use their new powers and save mankind! And yes, hilarity ensues. (And why, yes, that IS Miko in one of the most recent updates~)
Lavender Tea by Joichi - If you have known me for a period of time, you know I tend to lean more toward wlw and/or female-centric stories in general. This one, which focuses on two boys, actually caught my attention! It’s cute, fluffy, it’s SO unlike the typical BL stuff that tends to make me go elsewhere. Just a simple tale about two boys, and one already has a crush on the other (as far as I know from what I’ve read so far).
Junk Hyenas Diner by Chu - Yes, another one by Chu! I found this one just this year and it’s another great read. Much simpler than Slightly Damned, and it’s a B&W comic, but who cares? It’s still got Chu’s brand of funny. This one is a sci-fi-ish series of random events that take place around a diner run by some mutant hyenas and their robot friend.
MoonSlayer by Mónica N. Galván - R-RATING WARNING FOR THIS ONE. It’s a high fantasy tale of a girl who is trying to write her own destiny because her original one is a terrible one (like, REALLY terrible, not just run-of-the-mill stuff like crappy parents). I haven’t been able to catch up in the latter half of this year, but the story that I’ve read so far has been SO captivating, especially seeing how this girl grows up with so different influences in her life.
Vatican Assassins by MJ Massey - Literally read this one just last week and caught up THAT fast. It’s got demon hunters (see why I got interested so fast? lol) but with a Catholic theme - the hunters work for the Vatican, and pray to saints for battle blessings and the like. They are also mostly a bunch of teenagers, so it’s got teenager problems and conflicts alongside the demon hunting plot, which gives it a bit of a relatable touch since most anyone has experienced, in some way or another, some typical teenager issues.
....And that’s it for this year’s list. I still have quite a bit of a list to go through. I definitely didn’t get to all the titles I wanted to read....so I hope to start reading more titles in 2018! Maybe my list will grow! Also, you definitely should check these out, and maybe make your own lists, even if you’re just a reader. We love hearing recommendations!

Strike Up the Bandstand Dresses
Typically, a Broadway costume is showy and dramatic, but not all costumery falls into those categories--or if they do, it is in a much more subtle fashion. Such is the case with the designs that Tony-award winning costume designer Paloma Young crafted for Bandstand, a 2016-2017 season production. Set in the immediate post-war era of the 1940s, the musical is a swing-inspired theatrical moment in time that follows returned war veterans as they seek to win a national radio contest. Sweeping and dramatic, its costumes are understated in their elegance and Ms Young delivers some memorable pieces we’ll take a look at now. For this review, all of the photos are publicly available on the Playbill website and copyright remains with the photographer and licensee.
With the technical lingo and introduction out of the way, let’s sample a few of the designs Ms Young has put out. The female lead (and costumes for female leads are almost always the most interesting), Julia Trojan, is played by the truly incomparable Laura Osnes, and she spends the production radiating late 1940s glamor and style. There’s no particular order to the pieces I’m reviewing, so here goes:
This blue number is absolutely classic mid-1940s; it could easily have come out of the closet of any number of working or middle-class women in the era, either as a party dress for formal outfit for the former, or something a bit more run-of-the-mill for the latter. The 1940s was really the first decade of American fashion where patterned fabrics were obtainable by the masses. Prior to the Second World War, the cost of producing a patterned outfit meant that it was relegated either to specific types of couture or otherwise priced out of the range of the average American woman. But with increased production speed and revolutions in textile technology (including some used by yours truly’s grandparents!), patterned fabrics became accessible, and with accessibility, they became fashionable.
Blue and white is a classic combination of colors, or more strictly, a color and negative space. The floral is well-defined and monochromatic, with the variation in the blues caused by the presence or absence of additional dyes or pigments depending on how Bandstand’s costume shop decided to produce this number. Based on what I can see, Ms Young seems to have been inspired by a hydrangea or other dramatic flower; this is not a surprising choice! When you have a patterned number, you want the central element of the pattern, be it a floral or geometric design, to be memorable but replicable. Pick something too complicated, and the eye lingers too long on the design and misses the overall effect. But pick something too simple and you risk the work looking shoddy or overtly cheap (unless one is going for a minimalist effect--not typically done with florals). In the case of this dress, there is a complexity to the floral element that is replicated and allows for the viewer to appreciate it without distracting from the overall ensemble.
I also quite like that Ms Young did not do this is a simple straight dress, and instead chose to allow the fabric to bunch a little. The pinching of the fabric on the chest/shoulder and the bunching on the side show that the fabric has some give and is designed to be comfortable as well as elegant, something that would have been important to a performer such as the Julia Trojan character.
The other dress from this production that I want to take a look at is the one that Playbill features on the cover of the program. which has been used as the window card for the musical, and which features as the cover of the forthcoming (23 June) cast recording:
This is, obviously, a manipulated image, designed to look like something of an oil painting despite being based in a photograph. But what’s interesting is the design on the dress, which can be more clearly scene in this production still sourced from Playbill:
Every era has its inspired designs, and Paloma Young has clearly done her research here. The 1940s was an era when geometric patterns were making a comeback (and making their way into department store and middle class fashions) after being out of vogue for a few years. If you look closely at the pattern on the red dress, you can see that there’s almost a floral nature to the geometric pattern, but that it is still somewhat abstract and “clean”. The lines form a subtle, eye-catching design that does something else important: it changes as the wearer moves. I don’t have a great clip handy right now, but the way the pattern uses a different thread to catch the light all but guarantees that you will never see the same pattern in the same way twice.
Bandstand is not a musical that is about the visual aesthetic; it is intended to be a more character-driven, simpler production that places emphasis on the music. But that does not mean the costumery is any less rich or vibrant than some of the more showy productions of the 2017-2018 season. What Paloma Young has done here is create two very different, unique pieces that fit the era of the musical and draw the eye in a positive way.
The costumes complement the wearer (in this case Ms Osnes) without being too much of a distraction. Onstage, what will come through is the beauty of the fabric but in a way that does not take away from the music or the storyline. That’s not an easy tightrope to walk as a costume designer. Subtlety is your friend, and both of these outfits possess a subtle character that is not only ingenious, but accurate to the era from which they are meant to harken.
Well done, Paloma Young!

A history of outlier recruiting classes (and what happens next)
Usually, things snap back to reality soon. But not always. Let’s run through a decade of notable outlier classes.
Most teams recruit at similar levels year over year. Huge outlier classes only come about every so often.
But what happens when a team that usually recruits stars doesn’t, or a team used to signing three-stars suddenly lands tons of blue-chips? I looked over years of 247Sports Composite class rankings to get a sense.
Let’s mostly ignore transitional classes signed right after a new coach took over. Does each year’s big outlier class on this list hint at a trajectory change, or is it a one-off?
2019: No. 17 USC
The eight blue chip-recruits in this class means this is USC’s only class besides Steve Sarkisian’s transitional 2014 class to sign fewer than 12 blue-chips in the last decade. This wasn’t officially a transitional class, but with six new assistant coaches (and a Kliff Kingsbury entrance and departure), it might as well have been. Seeing USC out of the top 10 is one thing, but the Trojans being this far down is jarring.
It’s a class that reflects the program’s state of decline and dysfunction.
Honorable mention: Purdue (25th, 40-some spots above its traditional ranking).
2018: No. 5 Alabama (lol)
The Tide had signed the No. 1 class seven years running. Not only did Alabama not finish No. 1, it finished outside of the top three for only the second time since Saban’s first full-cycle class in 2008.
And then what happened?
This may surprise you, but the Tide resumed their No. 1 role for 2019.
If you go by per-player Composite average, this is the most efficient group in Saban history, ranking No. 5 all time on the second list in this post. The class composition is heavy on the trenches, shoring up for some upcoming NFL losses.
Oh, it gets worse. The only three-star in 2019’s Bama group is No. 1 kicker Will Reichard, the latest man tasked with fixing almost literally the Tide’s only weakness. He’s the highest rated kicker since 2017, so I think we can call him the equivalent of a five-star kicker.
Honorable mentions: Penn State (6th, up from 14th-20th the previous three years) and Purdue (51st, up from between 62nd and 80th the previous five years).
2017: No. 25 Texas
Transitional recruiting classes are rough, and that’s why we’re mostly skipping them here, but Tom Herman’s was way below even conservative expectations. It was Texas’ lowest-ranked class ever. Sam Ehlinger was the best player they signed from the state, and he ranked 19th in Texas. Obviously, he’s turned out to be pretty effective. But it was disappointing in the moment when LSU missed out on targets like DE K’Lavon Chaisson (LSU) and DT Marvin Wilson (FSU).
And then what happened?
Texas got it rolling in a big way. Herman finished with the No. 3 classes in 2018 and 2019. The 2017 unit can still serve as the foundation for Herman’s Texas turnaround — particularly the DBs and WRs. The 2018 class was the most loaded DBs class in rankings history.
Honorable mentions: Clemson (16th, based on the defending champs signing a small class), Maryland (18th, its first top-20 class in a decade), UTSA (75th (it wasn’t a joke that former LSU assistant Frank Wilson could quickly upgrade recruiting).
2016: No. 36 Houston
So, I know that you’re thinking, something along the lines of “this is all about Ed Oliver.” He’s one of six five-stars ever to sign with a non-power team.
I did an experiment. To gauge his impact on the class’ Signing Day ranking, I took Oliver out of Houston’s 2016 class and replaced him with a normally talented Houston DT signee (mid-level in-state three-star). The mythical non-Oliver Houston class would have ranked 43rd in the team rankings. That’s still comfortably the best Houston class ever and one of the best non-Power 5 classes ever.
The Cougars’ five-year recruiting ranking heading into 2018 was 71st. That should tell you something about this class besides the best recruit in school history.
And then what happened? Herman left for Texas, and the Cougars weren’t able to stay this hot on the trail. But Oliver had a great career, and UH was at least competitive.
Honorable mention: Ole Miss (5th, and we’ll come back to them).
2015: No. 27 Miami
Since we’re (mostly) steering away from transitional classes, Miami’s 2015 takes the cake, though Al Golden’s first class in 2011 was worse by ranking alone.
No school recruits itself, but Miami being outside of the to 20 in any year is hard to justify given that, well, it’s Miami. After that class flopped, this was the state of the program:
Clemson recruiting coordinator Jeff Scott said 58-0 win was "huge" for recruiting. Miami hosted "a lot" of players Clemson is also after.
— Gene Sapakoff (@Sapakoff) October 24, 2015
And then what happened? Mark Richt got the Canes back to nabbing good classes — two-straight top-15 classes. Manny Diaz took over after Richt retired, and will look to keep the momentum going as the Canes try to claw back to their early-2000s heyday. Their 2019 class ranked 28th, but this was a weird transition, and Miami’s added many transfers.
Honorable mention: Tennessee (4th, as Butch Jones built things brick by brick, remember?).
2014: No. 5 Texas A&M
It was a simpler time when the Aggies signed a future No. 1 NFL pick (Myles Garrett), the best QB in that year’s class (Kyle Allen), an elite athlete (five-star WR Speedy Noil) and a JUCO player who’d start in the Super Bowl as a rookie (Josh Reynolds).
The Aggies have been a staple in the top 20, but this was the peak. They were supposed to take the next step, to prove they could hang with the SEC’s elite and continue the ascendency.
And then what happened?
2014: 8-5
2015: 8-5
2016: 8-5
2017: 7-5
No classes in those years were better than 12th.
Honorable mention: Old Dominion (77th, a massive upgrade for a program typically around dead-last in FBS).
2013: No. 8 Ole Miss
Well, well, well, look who we have here. The class that came out of nowhere to shock the world. It was Ole Miss’ second top-15 class in a decade, but the quality at the top is what set it apart. You remember the five-star names: Tony Conner, Robert Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil, Laquon Treadwell. The last three were (in order) the best three recruits Ole Miss has ever signed.
Only USC and Alabama had as many or more five-stars that year. It was supposed to be the start of a rags-to-riches SEC tale. In a way, it was.
And then what happened?
youtube
Honorable mentions: Vanderbilt (26th; hello, James Franklin), and Georgia Tech (70th; recruiting the triple option is hard, but yikes).
2012: No. 7 Stanford
Distilling Stanford’s ethos, the best three players in the class were offensive linemen. The Cardinal actually signed two of the top four tackles in the country (Kyle Murphy, Andrus Peat) and the second-best guard (Joshua Garnett).
And then what happened?
Ho-hum, they’ve only played for the conference title four times (winning three) since this class. They’ve only cracked the top 15 in the rankings twice since, however. And they’ve yet to crack the top 10.
Honorable mentions: Wisconsin (65th, bad even for a team that doesn’t recruit like an elite), UCF (96th, which makes that future 0-12 team make more sense).
2011: No. 34 Texas A&M
The Aggies are again on the list thanks to a class that didn’t include a top-30 player in the state of Texas. Its average rating was six points (about half a star on average) away from the next year’s. And that 2012 class was Kevin Sumlin’s transitional class.
But what we didn’t know was the impact of a three-star dual-threat QB from Kerrville. His name: Johnny Manziel.
And then what happened?
Honorable mention: Texas Tech (19th, via signing four of the 10 highest-rated recruits in school history, a year after ranking 44th).
2010: No. 33 BYU
Anchored by three of the 10 highest-rated recruits in Cougars history, this was supposed to be the bedrock of something great for would-be BCS-busters. BYU was plenty good under Bronco Mendenhall, but this class punched above BYU’s weight.
And then what happened? Two of those three (QB Jake Heaps, WR Ross Apo) didn’t pan out. But Bronson Kaufusi did, eventually selected by the Ravens in the third round. The Cougars were a mainstay in the eight- and nine-win club for the next five seasons.
Honorable mention: Ohio State (18, well below its usual range).
2009: No. 36 Clemson
Twelve players signed. It was the fewest recruits Clemson had ever signed since the school tracked signings. It was the fewest signees among BCS schools that year. But Clemson will take quality over quantity.
A young assistant named Dabo Swinney had just been promoted to the head job. Around Clemson, they call this group the Dandy Dozen. And Swinney will credit them as the start of all the great things that followed.
“I’m very thankful for those guys for choosing to stick with us,” Swinney said of the class that built his dynasty. “Tajh Boyd, I’ll never forget sitting up there in his house. [Mike] Belotti goes out one day, [Jim] Tressel is coming in next. And here comes coach Swinney. I’m like, ‘listen, man, I need a quarterback at Clemson. I don’t have anything to offer you. I’ve got no resume. I’ve never coached. I’ve coached just a few games as an interim guy here, but man I think we can do some great things.”
And then what happened?
Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images
Honorable mention: South Carolina (14, which played a huge role in establishing one Gamecock team’s future success).
Don’t get too high or too low about one year.
Your team will likely regress to its mean, whether it’s doing well or poorly right now. But in the rare instance, a great class can start a dynasty.
Because of the multiple factors that go into a team’s success and even an individual player’s success, most of the time, an outlying class is just that.

EYEING TEST RETURN
“I said about not going to Sri Lanka because I felt like I did need a bit of a break” – Bairstow © Getty
How most of us must long for the days, those simpler days without Covid-19, when Jonny Bairstow’s position in England’s Test team seemed one of the world’s most vexing issues. It wasn’t then, of course, and it isn’t now. Nonetheless, what to do with Bairstow in Test cricket remains a conundrum that England’s management have, as yet, not solved.
He was in and out of their plans throughout the winter, playing just one of the six completed Test matches and being left out of two of the winter’s three Test squads. Initially, he was dropped for the Test series in New Zealand in November, but as it happened, he was then asked to stay on after the limited overs series to cover for an injury to Joe Denly, raising hopes of an imminent recall to the side. Once Denly was deemed fit, however, Bairstow returned home.
He was then included in the squad for the South Africa series and played the Boxing Day Test at Centurion as a replacement for Ollie Pope who was unwell. Scores of 1 and 9 were not enough to keep Pope out of the side once the Surrey youngster was back fit and Bairstow ran the drinks for the last three Tests. He then asked to be rested for the aborted Sri Lanka series, with his place in the squad going to Ben Foakes.
Although there is little doubt that Bairstow is now a world-class wicket-keeper, his position in the Test team has become uncertain after a sustained fallow period with the bat. Since a stellar year in 2016, when he averaged 58.80 from 17 Tests, his calendar year average has steadily declined from 34.31 to 30.45 and then to 18.55 last year. His last Test hundred came in November 2018.
Part of the issue with Bairstow has been the confusion of what role England want him to play. Should he play as a specialist batsman or as a wicket-keeper batsman? In which position should he bat? Should that position depend on whether he has the gloves or not?
Since the start of 2017, Bairstow has batted in each position from number three, where he scored that November 2018 hundred in Colombo, to number eight and has lost the gloves twice, to Ben Foakes in Sri Lanka, initially through injury and, once returned to the side, because of Foakes’ good form and then to Jos Buttler in New Zealand this winter. It’s been difficult to keep up.
For his part, although Bairstow says he simply wants to be part of the Test team in whichever role he can get, it is clear that, given the choice, he still wants to be considered as a wicket-keeper. “I want to play. I’ve always said that.” he said. “Over a period of time, I’ve been really happy with my keeping. That was the bit at the start of my career that people questioned but people have stopped speaking about it over the last couple of years.
“Statistically, I’ve looked at the stats and my stats are very good. So there’s no reason why that isn’t an area I want to be coming back into. Similarly, with my batting. Look, I’m not ruling anything out. I want to keep my options very much open. I’m someone who has always been positive about playing. There have always been challenges that have been asked, whether that’s been keeping wicket or batting in certain position and circumstances. I’d like to think I’ve risen to those challenges.”
Bairstow admits that he was disappointed to be dropped for the tour to New Zealand at the start of the winter after a poor Ashes series with the bat. The gloves were given to Buttler even though his returns against Australia – average of 23.77 – were similar to Bairstow’s, who averaged 24.70 in that series. It is difficult to argue that the case for Buttler as England’s Test wicket-keeper was more compelling than Bairstow’s.
“I was disappointed at the time,” he said. “My stats of my keeping were very good and I didn’t feel like I had done anything wrong with my keeping and I was getting complimented highly by people on that. When you think about getting back in you can only be judged on your last performances and I like to think they were good and I hope they will get me back in the side as long as I score enough runs.”
Bairstow has been back in training for a couple of weeks, working with Yorkshire’s head coach Andrew Gale at Headingley. He is heading up to Durham this week to train with Ben Stokes, Mark Wood and Brydon Carse, the first time he has faced bowlers rather than bowling machines or the dog thrower. Stokes and Wood hurling them down at 90mph plus will be quite some challenge first up.
The time away from the game has been a chance for Bairstow to “reset” which is what Ed Smith, the chief selector, said he wanted him to do when dropping him for the New Zealand tour. “I feel good,” he said. “I said about not going to Sri Lanka because I felt like I did need a bit of a break. I’d had something like six nights at home [from] October to February. So that naturally takes its toll on a long winter. It came at a decent time and there’s going to be a freshness coming back in.”
It remains to be seen whether Bairstow is recalled to the Test side for the West Indies series but there is no indication, given Buttler was selected for the Sri Lanka tour, that the incumbent is going to be relieved of the gloves. There will, at least, be an intra-squad game between an enlarged group of England players ahead of the West Indies series during which Bairstow can press his claims.
There is also the added unknown of whether players will be able to be part of both the red and white-ball squads or if they need to remain separate to reduce the possibility that Covid-19 is spread between the two groups. If they need to remain separate, Smith will have decide whether to include Bairstow in the white-ball group, where he is an automatic pick, or the red-ball. If Bairstow is included in the latter, but doesn’t get in the final eleven, he will then miss out on white-ball action.
“I think first and foremost we need to get this bubble right with the Test squad, because that’s going to be the first test of the process,” Bairstow said. “Once those procedures have been implemented then we’ll start talking about the crossover from the red ball to the white ball camp. People coming in and out of the bubble. We’ve seen the government guidelines and they’re changing every week in terms of what you can and can’t do.
“We’ve still go 3 weeks until the first Test starts. There’s still a period of time after that until the one-dayers start. At this moment in time, it’s still far ahead to be wondering if we can chop and change because we don’t know what the current situation will be in the country in three weeks’ time.”
Whatever the outcome of the next few weeks, Test cricket still remains a focus for Bairstow. Given he is only 30 years-old, and given the obvious talent he has, England hope he can return to being a significant player in Test cricket at some stage. Right now, though, he remains in Test limbo.

Actually, That’s A Tisane

Actually, That’s A Tisane
Late in 2017, I couldn’t sleep. I was up all night, in fact. After several weeks of sleepless nights, lost in a fog of midnight madness, I decided to try the unthinkable: I give up caffeine. It was early 2018 and still the season of New Year resolutions and self-care regimes so it seemed like a good time to introduce the idea that I, the founder of coffee blog Sprudge, would go caffeine free in 2018.
I experienced about three days of headaches brought on by the withdrawal, but it didn’t take long( and it doesn’t take long for most) to acclimate to life without the stimulant. The only thing missing was the rite of enjoying a hot liquor in the morning. Fortunately, I live in a city with a lot of cafes with excellent tea programs and those programs tend to have a few caffeine-free alternatives on offer. Indeed, almost every cafe has at least one herbal infusion, a botanical mixture, or fruit-forward tisane, and as I continued what would be a seven-month journey of caffeine abstinence, I detected delicious offerings beyond your run-of-the-mill rosehips or chamomile.
Just don’t call it tea.
While many call the following drinkings herbal teas, these are* actually* herbal tisanes. Tea is a plant, Camellia sinensis, and if it’s not from that plant it’s not really tea. This is a quite simple thing but it is wildly and widely misunderstand, and for tea professionals who do this stuff full day it is deeply frustrating, to which I sympathize.
Tisanes aren’t teas, but they are highly delicious, or at the least they can be in the right hands. For the purpose of this guide, we’ll explore a range of beautiful immersing blooms, roots, plants, and fruit served warm and delightfully free of caffeine. I invite you all to correct your friends, tut-tut your family members, and go forth calling the drinks in this guide tisanes–botanical tisanes if you’re feeling especially fancy.
These drinkings can be made at home with very little equipment or expertise and are available to purchase on the internet( or in some cases your produce aisle !) but they also get along quite swimmingly with gear from Breville, our sponsors here at Tea Week, whose scope of automatic steeping systems seem ready-made for the thirsty tisane fan. For those at home counting, these tisanes are low calorie, vegan, mostly gluten-free *, keto, paleo, South Beach approved, and mostly sugar-free **.
A note about health claims: There are a lot of claims out there about the healthful benefits of ingredients like ginger, turmeric, mint, and many others in the tisanes below. While these are all well and great we’re going to base these suggestions purely on the savor experience and enjoyment factor–not their purported healthfulness.
Produce Aisle Winners
The following tisanes are simple to make and use fresh ingredients that most can find in their local specialty shop, farmers marketplace, or grocery store.
Ginger Root
Ginger is a lovely tisane with a tremendous flavor. It’s a spicy meatball if you’re heavy on the ginger so I foster you to start out utilizing about a tablespoon per beaker of hot water to start and moving up from there. At this point, I jam in as much ginger in my tea-pot as I can.
Steeping ginger photographed here in the Breville One-Touch Tea Maker.
Preparation: Carefully peel ginger root and slice into small coins( the smaller, the more infuse-able surface area ). Boil water and immerse for at the least ten minutes. Strain and serve immediately. Wonderful with the addition of lemon and honey.
Hot tip: The Breville One-Touch Tea Maker will infuse ginger root in boiling hot water for 10 minutes at a time.
Fresh Peppermint
Fresh mint tea is a staple in Amsterdam cafes and couldn’t be simpler: stuffing mint leaves in a glass and steeping them in water. No tea pouches or filter necessary! Not merely is it a pleasure to drink, it’s also a beautiful presentation.
Preparation: Rinse peppermint leaves exhaustively. Place a considerable quantity in a tall tempered glass. Pour simmering hot water over leaves and steep for five minutes. Drink from the glass!
Beautiful Blends
These tisanes are a mix of dried ingredients–most offered in grab-and-go sachets or in their loose form.
Organic Turmeric Tonic
The Organic Turmeric Tonic from Kilogram Tea is a blend of turmeric root, ginger, lemon verbena, licorice root, lemon peel, and citrus oils. It’s warming, spicy, and somewhat bitter. The pyramid-shaped filter pouches are a nice touch and keep those pesky pieces of roots out of your drink.
Source: Kilogram Tea Price: $8.99 for fifteen pouches. Also available bagless.
Also worth checking out: Rishi Turmeric Ginger, which all but saved my life during a most unpleasant 2016 Winter season.
Blend No. 67: Meadow
Portland, Oregon’s Steven Smith Teamaker renders this tasty blend of” golden Egyptian chamomile blooms and mildly stimulating, fragrant hyssop joined with smooth Cape rooibos, rose petals and linden blooms .” It has a pleasant mouthfeel and sweetness and a pleasure to steep and re-steep.
Source: Steven Smith Teamaker
Price: $11.99 for 15 sachets. Also available loose.
Carrot
Song Tea in San Francisco creates botanical combinations that simulate the profile and visual representation of their traditional teas. Carrot is a” blend of domestic dried carrots and burdock, South African honeybush, Chinese ginger, and Indonesian sweet cinnamon” and has a remarkable fruit quality backed up by the spice of the ginger and cinnamon. Should you come across a coffee bar serving this tisane, it pairs wonderfully with a single-origin espresso shot.
Source: Song Tea Price: $14 for 120 grams, loose.
Single-Origin Tisanes
These are perhaps the highest-end tisanes on the listing in terms of cost and dearth in the US. Available through special importers, the following tisanes aren’t for the faint of heart( but they sure are delicious ).
Kettl Nagano Soba Cha
Sugars in the buckwheat kernels caramelize in the toasting process devoting this tisane almost a sugar-cereal-in-the-morning flavor but in a really good way. Sourced from Nagano by Kettl, this beverage is one of our favorites.
Preparation: Kettl recommends steeping 5 grams in 200 ml of 205oF water for but a minute.
Source: Kettl Price: $20/200 grams
Roasted Black Soybean
Tea Merchant sells this roasted soybean tisane that also doubles as a snack( the beans can be feed once they’ve been immersed !) These soybeans are a smaller cultivar known as Sengoku from Hokkaido. The drink is somewhat savory and has a nice sweetness.
Preparation: Steep 5 grams in 200 ml of 195 oF water for a minute up to three times.
Source: Tea Dealers Price: $16/100 grams
Wild Persimmon Leaves
To wrap up this guide I present another offering from Tea Merchant: wild persimmon leaf tisane sourced from Hadong, Korea. The tisane is orange, like the fruit, but has an herbaceous and nutty quality.
Preparation: Steep 5 grams in 180 ml of 176 oF water 3-4 times.
Source: Tea Merchant Price: $38/50 grams
This guide is just the beginning to the many caffeine-free possibilities that exist out there. There are hundreds of herbs, botanicals, roots, foliages, branches, fruits, and heck, even bones out there to throw in heated water and infuse for one-to-several minutes. Drink up!
