You know the age old saying “come to Brazil”? Well today we bring Brazil to your ears! We are happy to bring you Darkat Yuuyamihn and their brand new album “eu sou a vitima e o carrasco”. This album is a bit of a doozy in a very, very good way. It takes us all over the place musically and even emotionally. Driving us from a contemplative place to feelings of anxiety and dread. Surrounding all these different emotions is quite different layers of musical influences ranging from post-black metal to post-hardcore. Darkat Yuuyamihn manage to combine the likes of V.C.H style shoegaze mixed with Spectral Lore type of black metal with an Ancst after taste. The crazy part? That’s really the tip of the iceberg going on in eu sou a vitima e o carrasco. This album is truly for those who like a variety in their albums.

Atmospheric/Post-Black Metal from Érd, Hungary
The trump card of the BÁL project is the disgust that the actions, deeds and influence of mortal, weak human beings provoke in me. We all live our lives with different perceptions and qualities, but by our very nature we also do things that destroy other processes. The one-man band was formed in 2017, when I had to understand that all "mistakes" come from weakness and there is nothing we can do about it as long as we walk our own path as living human beings. I needed a channel through which pain could flow out of me: (self)destruction for clarity. Since then, BÁL has taught me a lot, but the disgust and hatred remain. It is true that we are not pure beings, but the confrontation with our weak humanity is still for me unprocessable. BÁL is the instrument, the teacher, the comforter, the channel.

kinda think blackgaze is a misnomer, feels like it comes out of french semi-underground post hxc/skramz & post(metal/rock) in general than shoegaze to me, tho i guess tht depends if how u count neige's various projects. the deafheaven postblack/blackgaze style feels a lot more like a usbm take on that scene. tbf posthardcore and postmetal take a lot from shoegaze anyway

Every analysis that attempts to understand the complexities of racial rule and the machinations of the racial state without accounting for black existence within its framework—which does not mean simply listing it among a chain of equivalents or returning to it as an afterthought—is doomed to miss what is essential about the situation. Black existence does not represent the total reality of the racial formation—it is not the beginning and the end of the story—but it does relate to the totality; it indicates the (repressed) truth of the political and economic system. That is to say, the whole range of positions within the racial formation is most fully understood from this vantage point, not unlike the way in which the range of gender and sexual variance under patriarchal and heteronormative regimes is most fully understood through lenses that are feminist and queer. What is lost for the study of black existence in the proposal for a decentered, “postblack” paradigm is a proper analysis of the true scale and nature of black suffering and of the struggles—political, aesthetic, intellectual, and so on—that have sought to transform and undo it. What is lost for the study of nonblack nonwhite existence is a proper analysis of the true scale and nature of its material and symbolic power relative to the category of blackness. This is why every attempt to defend the rights and liberties of the latest victims of state repression will fail to make substantial gains insofar as it forfeits or sidelines the fate of blacks, the prototypical targets of the panoply of police practices and the juridical infrastructure built up around them. Without blacks on board, the only viable political option and the only effective defense against the intensifying cross fire will involve greater alliance with an antiblack civil society and further capitulation to the magnification of state power.

Iniziamo questa recensione con un’ammissione di ignoranza. Onestamente non so esattamente cosa sia il post blak, ne ignoravo l’esistenza, e non saprei nominare neppure un gruppo che lo suona. Per me i gruppi post black sono sempre stati gruppi rock che eseguono musica space, onirica e sospesa con sferzate black. L’accostamento tra questo e il black metal tout curt, non l’avrei mai fatto. Questo è il bello della vita, che si impara sempre.
Detto questo, in conseguenza, posso solo descrivere il disco per quello che ha trasmesso a me con quello che sono le mie conoscenze. I Vepserhymn si definiscono, appunto, black/postblack. Sono definizioni, confini troppo ristretti che penalizzano la loro proposta. L’alternarsi di momenti ‘cattivi’, distorti, freddi e taglienti come lame di ghiaccio, sono perfettamente alternati a frangenti sospesi, sognanti, eterei.
Tastiere, voce pulita, batteria minimal, arpeggi disegnano architetture sonore che appaiono disegnate con la luce della luna. I frangenti più violenti sottolineano l’atmosfera general del disco che risulta in ogni caso sulfurea. Certo, si deve essere abituati ad un certo tipo di suono per poterla apprezzare. Tuttavia, essendo meno esasperata del black old school, mantiene perfettamente le atmosfere create.
A fare da contrappunto a questo tipo di architettura ci pensano i testi. Questi riguardano la natura nel suo stato ancora incontaminato. Tenendo presente questo aspetto ben ci si immerge nel disco. Le sensazioni che l’ascolto provoca sono quasi fisiche, di avvolgimento dell’ascoltatore che viene trasportato in foreste, tra altissime montagne. Il tutto in ambiente notturno, crepuscolare, freddo.
L’idea che nasce è quella di star camminando effettivamente tra alberi, boschi, sentieri appena accennati o del tutto assenti. Attorno solo l’eco di spiriti notturni neutri. I Vepserhymn riescono ottimamente a strutturare i brani proprio con questo intento. All’ennesimo ascolto si va oltre l’impatto sono più violento per scoprire l’ottimo utilizzo della tecnica strumentale.
Questa emerge sia dalla composizione delle canzoni sia dalla perizia degli strumentisti. In particolar modo se ci si riferisce agli aspetti rimici e di arpeggio. Tutti molto più intricati e complessi di quanto possa risultare ad un primo ascolto. Probabilmente è anche uno conseguenza per il genere scelto che spinge a trovare soluzioni inusuali. A dominare nell’intero lavoro sono sempre e comunque le atmosfere.
Concludendo. Che si tratti di post black metal o rock, quello dei Vepserhymn è un ottimo lavoro. Curato, ben suonato e strutturato. Può risultare ostico ad un primo ascolto se non si è abituati a suoni e ritmi troppo ‘tirati’ e taglienti. Superato questo primo approccio il disco apre un universo sonoro davvero interessante e carico di suggestioni. La curiosità ora è vedere cosa riusciranno a fare i nostri per evolvere ulteriormente. Difficile andare oltre un lavoro di questa portata.
