The Feltville Store/Church, at the Deserted Village of Feltville in Berkeley Heights, #NewJersey. This structure was built in 1845. The first floor housed a general store, the #Feltville post office, and possibly a storeroom. The second floor served as a chapel for religious worship. The #Adirondack style porch and the tower were added in the 1880s when the site was a resort called Glenside Park. Feltville was a self-contained company town from 1845-1860, centered around a mill. After 1860 it was abandoned for a short time before becoming the resort community of Glenside Park, which flourished until about 1916. Deracinate - having its roots in French racine - meaning root. Often applied to the movement of people forced or voluntary it means the cutting off from one’s cultural background.

Bugle plants taken from the garden Cairnhill and posted 12 Jan by parcel post to Myfanwy Johns, Peter Grego, Graham Chorlton and Tom Ranahan. The law changed in France re parcel post on the 1st Jan 2015. To send something thicker than 3cm now has to be accompanied by  more details of poster and receiver including email and phone numbers.

E V E R Y O N E  I N  S T I T C H E S

Most of the #NeedlessPost has now found it’s way back to London, having been all over the country and some even across the seas and skies. 

Each hand embroidered piece features the work of three strangers, following each others stitches to create a collaborative creation, sent and received through the post.

As well as receiving the finished pieces, i have been sent lovely cards and notes from stitchers who have participated; ‘I have so many threads, it’s good to put them to use’.

It’s lovely to see the project culminate in such lovely and unique creations. It’s a pity that along the way that some got lost in the post and some stitchers lost interest, but to those who stayed focused on the project, thank you so much for being a part of it.

I hope that when the final few, trickle through, we can look at exhibiting the work in a quaint little space and consider starting the project over again!

From the archive: The United States Post Office – Los Angeles Terminal Annex in Los Angeles, #California. Designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, the Terminal Annex was built by the Sarver & Zoss contracting firm from 1939 to 1940. The building was built for the purpose of processing all incoming and outgoing mail in Los Angeles and served that purpose from 1940 to 1989. It was placed the @nationalregisternps in 1985. N E E D L E S S  T O  S A Y . . . I T ‘ S   G O I N G  R A T H E R  W E L L!

We are now at a very exciting point in the #NeedlessPost project! All those participating have by now completed some embroidery and posted that onto a stranger, they now have also received something from a different stranger and have spent the last month or so making additions to it. This piece is now in the post and every needless postee is waiting to receive their third and final round to get to work on!

The project was always an experiment, we never quite knew how well people might take to it, if some might lose their motivation, if the pieces would come together well or not. Judging by the sneak peeks on instagram and facebook - embroidery really works as a collaborative process!

Some have taken inspiration from the work mailed to them and have created repeat motifs of designs received, others have embellished existing designs, while other have built upon abstract shapes to create stories and characters!

The project seems to be proving popular with our furry friends too!

W A I T    A    M I N U T E    M I S T E R    P O S T M A N !

The day has arrived! Needless post has been sent far and wide to it's next embroiderer.

Everyone is now watching their letterboxes eagerly to receive round 2! Once our Needless Postees are all set, with their new piece to add to, the collaboration part of the project can really begin!

We love seeing all the different styles and ideas, and can't wait to see how the designs begin to work together and inspire each other!

It's also super lovely to see what lovely post everyone is sending!

A N D   W E ' R E   O F F !

Thanks to the wonders of Instagram & Twitter we are delighted to see the first few stitches of the #NeedlessPost project have begun.

Some keen postees have already sent their needless post off to its next embroiderer while some have made a few first tentative stitches. But everyone who signed up in the first wave of this project, will hopefully be ready to post their round 1 embroidery by the posting deadline (20th Feb).

When I asked one needless postee if she thinks people will stay motivated to complete all three round of the project she replied;

"well, it's low effort task that is replenished with a new excitement when the next one arrives" and we think that's so true. There's nothing as exciting as receiving post, and in round 2 all needless postees will receive something new and exciting to begin working on!

We can't wait to get posting round 1, and to get to work on round 2!

N E E D L E S S   P O S T   G E T S   A R O U N D !

This weekend we have officially kicked off the project and linked up all our keen embroiderers. We have embroidery hoops and posting loops at the ready!

We’re super excited to see how many cities are now involved in this fledgling project, we even have some ‘Needless Postees’ from across the seas in New York and Italy!

That’s the joy of postal collaboration, it’s limitless! Well, except maybe in space, that would take some organisation, and the zero gravity could prove tricky when you drop your needle.

Anyway, off we go!
