Hello! I’m searching for a Sherlock fic on AO3. It’s Johnlock and Post Reichenbach, but in this, a little bit into Sherlock taking down Moriarty’s web, John figures out Sherlock’s alive (I believe via Anderson), and thus decides to go find him. It’s a rather long fic if I remember correctly, as well as completed too. If anyone could help me find it, I would be eternally grateful!

Then he heard a gasp.

And a heavy step below him.

Accompanied by the very real feeling ... Unmistakable.

That of a warm hand moving along a polished wooden rail. The slightest friction echoing up the stairs ...

John tried to steady his heart rate. His pulse thrumming in his ears, nearly drowning out the sound ... If it even had been real ...?

Sherlock's voice broke the silence next, barely a whisper ...

. "I heard you."

It sounded unsteady ... shaky ...

. fragile ... ?

Like a ghost.

But the next thing he heard was a very real hiss of pain, shattering his illusions ... even as he felt the thud of a body collapsing onto the stairs below.

John was down the stairs in seconds.

Gathering the long-missing detective into his arms. Every sense taking in and cataloguing what his eyes could not yet believe ...

"Sherlock? Oh, God - Sherlock!" John cradled his friend closer, rocking him into a better position where he could check him for wounds ... for anything he could do to help alleviate his pain ...?

He couldn't make out was cause of Sherlock's distress, but the man was fading into unconsciousness.

"Just ... hold on, Sherlock!" John commanded hauling Sherlock up into his arms.

Despite Sherlock's thin stature, he had been almost pure muscle before, but now ... John didn't want to think about how Sherlock could have lost this much weight in the time he had been away?

He was real. He was here. That was all that mattered.

John found the strength to carry whatever weight Sherlock had, gladly.

Upstairs, he tucked Sherlock into a bed that lay fitted and ready for use as if he had never left it ... and then stared at the sight in wonder.

Sherlock was alive. Sherlock was home.

John felt Sherlock shift and those crystal blue eyes blinked open for a moment. He could see Sherlock fought against the sleep that desperately wanted to overtake him.

How tired was he ... ?

John shushed him and managed to settle him back down. Watching as his friend's demeanor relaxed. His eyes closed, and his breathing evened out ...

Seconds passed. Minutes.

Maybe hours.

When John felt Sherlock's hand reach out in his sleep ... and grasp for his hand.

"... John, I ..."

The baritone voice poured into John's veins. Hot liquid. More valuable than blood. More heady than pure oxygen. Speeding up his heart rate again ...

"... I heard you," Sherlock sighed with relief, "I heard you ..."

John sighed too.

. Sherlock was dreaming.

This time ... John knew he wasn't the only one wishing for an empty grave. A successful magic trick.

They were both experiencing a miracle.

John gripped Sherlock's hand firmly, caressing the knuckles as he watched his miracle ...

Pen

A pen was all he had with him, in the end. Ever since Sherlock had committed suicide, by jumping from the rooftop of the hospital building, John was left with an empty mind, an empty heart, and just a void the size of a black hole in his soul.

In this miserable and alcoholic state, John was determined about one thing: he would let the whole of London - or if possible, the whole world - know the truth about everything that had led Sherlock to that suicidal state at all. Because if he had to hear one more person referring to Sherlock as a 'fake genius', he'd go insane.

John was going to make a long post on his blog, and for that, he was creating a rough draft in his notebook with a pen.

Because pen was the only weapon he was left with, now.

1- When did you start playing Choices? What was the first book you played?

Christmas 2017, I was scrolling FB and saw an ad for Choices featuring The Royal Romance Book 1. I downloaded the app and started reading TRR right away.

2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?

I was hooked on that series and was waiting for a new chapter to release. I was desperate for more and my sister suggested that I try searching Tumblr for fanfiction in 2021.

3- How did you pick your blog name?

Liam was my LI, so I joined his name with mine!

4- Pull up the first post in your archive, and tell us about it!

My very first post was the masterlist to @ao719's series ‘The Invitation’. I found her treasure trove of Liam Rys/TRR stories very quickly! I couldn't get enough!

5- Do you write fanfiction, create fan art, or are you one of those really gifted people who do both?

I write fanfiction. I wish I could draw…the best I can do is create moodboards.

6- How long have you been creating for Choices and for any other fandoms?

I started writing my own stories for Choices pretty much at the same time I found the app. Publishing those stories started with prompting and encouragement from Anitah [@ao719] & Emmy [@txemrn]. I posted my first on October 28, 2022, ‘October Weekend Retreat’. I have also written for ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Twilight’ & ‘The X-files’. These stories are all published on AO3 with other pseudonyms

7- What is your favorite Choices book, and what is your favorite Choices book to create for?

My favorite book(s) to read and create for: The Royal Romance Series. Favorite = book 3

8- Share your first Choices fanfic or fan art that you posted with us. Do you still like it, or would you change it if you were creating it today?

I do still like it! The changes I would make…I would add more ‘Would You Rather’ questions and dialogue.😁

9- What is your favorite piece of fiction or art that you created?

Liam developed signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, avoiding social interactions, having trouble sleeping, being easily frightened/startled and showing some physical symptoms of panick (sweating, nausea, trembling). Leo asked Drake to return to the palace to help Liam, both encouraging the young prince to seek therapy.

As he got better, Liam enrolled in the University of Cordonia to study History and returned to the Royal Air Force. Liam had plans to follow an academic career when Leo abdicated the throne. After Liam got his major degree, he was formally introduced as the Crown Prince and officially prepared to rule the Kingdom. Though it was a drastic change of path in his life that required many sacrifices, Liam adjusted to the life of future monarch quite fast, undeniably enjoying the perks of using the many skills he had developed over the years to make a difference as a politician.

What's his family like?

Constantine wasn't a present parent, nor a father who easily showed affection towards his sons. Liam was mostly raised by his mother and a few nanies and tutors. Eleanor constantly talked about the importance of Constantine's role as king and father not just for their family but for the entire country, which is why Liam always looked up to his father.

Eleanor was a loving mother to him and his brother, but also disciplined them when necessary. She shared her love for reading, writing and History with Liam. Her passing had an enormous impact on Liam's life and personality. He still misses her dearly and visits her whenever he can. He always takes a bouquet of jasmines to her grave on Mother's day and on her birthday.

Being six years younger than Leo, the brothers always had divergences, often teasing each other, Leo and Liam played pranks that usually led to getting both of the. in trouble while growing up. Yet, Leo always knew Liam was a better fit for the Crown and has always been a protective of his baby brother, taking the blame for himself whenever Liam did something wrong, defending his brother from malicious comments and insults, helping him during his first months as Crown Prince and teaching him self-defense and mixed martial arts. Liam looks up to his brother and fully supports the lifepath and choices his older brother makes.

Regina entered the Royal family a few years after Eleanor's passing. Despite her usual commanding presence towards her stepsons, she cares for them deeply. Liam has great respect and fondness towards Regina.

Liam doesn't have a long list of relatives he's truly close to. The only exception are the Foredales, specially Lady Daphne.

Favourite childhood memory: Playing with Drake and Maxwell around the palace, trips to the Walkers ranch and summers at Applewood Manor.

Biggest guilty pleasure: he's getting addicted to watching videos of people building things from scratch like furniture, houses or doing crafts. Early bird. But he can't deny he loves late nights with his wife.

How does he relax after a bad day?

It depends gon how bad the day was. On a not so bad day, half an hour listening to music (he has a soothing playlist on Spotify) when he needs to slow down will do. He goes horse riding or walking when he needs to clear his head. But on really tough days, he'll go to the gym to practice any sort of martial arts. Muay Thai and Krav Maga are his favorites.

Personality: INFJ-T (Turbulent Advocate)

He still pilots helicopters and small planes from time to time, but since he doesn't fly often, he has never piloted any aircraft with his children in it. He took Jade a few times when they were newlyweds (it involved a lot of begging and persuasion on her part), but there was always an aircraft pilot team on board just in case.

Vid WIP meme (continued)

"How fun! I would love to know more about the two Sherlock vids: Memento Mori and Headlock. I’d also love to hear more about the songs you associate with different characters."

Memento Mori is a song by the group Fish in a Birdcage. I actually started to make this vid in the somewhat frantic run-up to the most recent round of Holmestice before switching tacks to fic writing. I was introduced to the song via a wonderful Sherlock & Co. playlist on Spotify, and as soon as I heard it, I thought the darkly playful sound was perfect for the more frenetic Holmesian adaptations, like BBC or the Ritchie films. The theme of the song seemed to me to be about the adrenaline rush that comes with mystery + the fascination of death, plus the abhorrence of mundanity (my mind rebels at stagnation, give me problems, give me work!) That repeating chorus ("I never wanted to sleep") plus the self-aware, mordant cheek of the verses ("ashes to ashes, dust to dust, filling up my coffee cup") -- there's an awareness here that this character craves the stimulation of violence/danger and the exultation of being constantly in overdrive. The "hound" references in the bridge obviously lend themselves to Baskerville. The verse "inside the timeless cage, I never wanted to sleep" definitely brings the Mind Palace sequences to mind, especially in The Abominable Bride where he mentally retreats so far into another time and place that he temporarily loses his sense of reality.

I started this vid with images of water cascading down paired with Sherlock stepping up onto the ledge at Barts in The Reichenbach Fall. Then we cut to a shot of John choking on smoke inside the Guy Fawkes pyre paired with a shot of a beautiful, flickering flame. The title card comes up -- Memento Mori -- and we get Mycroft's dialogue ("You're not haunted by the war Dr. Watson. You miss it. Welcome back.") That's all timed over the opening instrumental and when the first verse starts (ashes to ashes, dust to dust) we cut first to the shot of dirt flying around John at Maiwand as he's shot, then to the opening of ASIP and the glimpse of the gun he keeps in his drawer, and a lingering shot of him near tears in his bed, post-nightmare, "I never wanted to sleep." I timed out some of Sherlock's riding crop swings at the corpse to match the initial percussion when it comes in. Plus: "Memento mori leaves a debt, you haven't paid it yet" = Sherlock rotating the IOU apple after Moriarty's visit in TRF.

Anyhow, that's about as far as I'd gotten. The process is slower than it used to be because I lost all my old vidding programs when my former laptop died a year ago, and I'm only slowly learning new programs/finding alternatives that work. It's still an open question whether I'll get any new vids done, especially anything that would require me to rip new footage (the software to do that is increasingly elusive, at least for me). But we'll see :)

Headlock by Imogen Heap is another song that I thought has the right sound for BBC Sherlock. The theme seems to be about self-sabotage, a person -- or two people -- who have convinced themselves they aren't cut out to let their hearts rule their heads ("You say too late to start, got your heart in a headlock"), which works as a running Johnlock theme. There are little phrases that remind me of John and Sherlock's first meeting ("throw a stranger an unexpected smile". And then John being at a loss how to be anything but a soldier -- "with big intention, still posted at your station" -- transforming into something joyful in that crazy rooftop chase when he first jumps after Sherlock and forgets his limp: "still going on about the day you should have flied.")

The song's bridge is perfect for a Mycroft-Sherlock interlude ("You've been walking, you've been hiding, and you look half-dead half the time. Monitoring you, like machines do, you've still got it, I'm just keeping an eye"). The sound of a pulse monitor flat-lining in the middle of the song before the big instrumental kicks in would work perfectly with the whole Mary shooting him business. I don't know, I just see lots of story hooks in these lyrics, and it seems right for the frustration of an unrealized love story that ends with a tentative try at believing that a new start is possible after all.

The second part of your question was about songs that I associate with particular characters despite not being tempted to vid with them. This can happen for a lot of different reasons -- maybe it's a song I associate with the character because someone else already made a great vid for them with it! Or maybe it's a song where the lyrics are right but the sound/tone is wrong for source material, or maybe there's one perfect verse but the rest of the song doesn't work nearly as well. Most often, though, it happens when there's a song focused heavily on emotions/interiority that perfectly matches my headcanon for a character but doesn't really lend itself to any specific story elements from the source material the character is in. That makes it hard to storyboard a visual narrative to go along with the song. So, to give a few examples...

This is a song I will forever associate with Sherlock because humansrsuperior made a wonderful vid with it over a decade ago (which has long since vanished from the internet): Hi by Psapp. ("Compulsive: every page I turn I want more. I never know the next thing in store, 'cause you excite me like a locked door does.")

Here is a Sherlock song where the lyrics are right but the sound is (in my opinion) not an easy match with the source material: Curses by The Crane Wives.

And for those headcanon songs that express a character's interior life/emotional truth vividly but are hard to visually storyboard, the two at the top of my list are love songs for my two favorites from SPN, Dean and Cas. Dean's song is a cover of A Modern Leper by Julien Baker. ("And is that you in front of me, coming back for even more of exactly the same? You must be a masochist, to love a modern leper on his last leg.") And Cas's is Two by Sleeping At Last. ("I just want to love you, to love you, to love you well. I just want to learn how, somehow, to be loved myself....I will love you without a single string attached.") Both a perfect summation of, like, 10,000 fics, but neither easy to vid with footage from the show itself.

And to conclude on a Holmesian note, for me one of those headcanon 'this is what he's like on the inside' songs for BBC Sherlock is All I Really Want (Acoustic) by Alanis Morissette.

Sherlock Fic Recs - October 2024

I have spent a fair bit of time perusing others' AO3 Sherlock bookmarks over the past couple of years and have found many earlier works which don't always make it onto newer rec lists. Here are five that I highly recommend.

First up, The James Holmes Chronicles, by pretty vk (the primary trilogy ranges from T to E to M and comprises almost 300k words; there are a few additional shorter pieces, most of which review certain events through other characters' POV). In a nutshell, Sherlock completes his mission and acquires a son. This is very adult fiction; pay attention to the tags. The son Sherlock acquires is Moriarty's 12-year-old who has been sexually and physically abused since age 9 by Sebastian Moran. The Sherlock here is familiar from S1 & S2, distant, slow to understand emotions, but caring in his own way. Eventual johnlock.

One of my go-to favorites is The Trivial Sublime by mildredandbobbin (E, 54k). Post-TRF, Sherlock must cope with John's being with Mary, which situation is fairly quickly resolved. As their relationship develops, Victor Trevor enters the scene, resulting in Sherlock making a horrible blunder at an intimate moment with John. All ends well.

Another post-TRF (do you detect a theme?) is This is Not a Love Song (Except that It Is), by yaycoffee (T, 20k), with a sequel, If These Walls Could Speak (M, 6k). John is involved with Mary (who is not an assassin and is not awful), but is thrilled when Sherlock returns. At first Sherlock vies with Mary for John's attention, until he realizes he is hurting him. Lots of angst for Sherlock and John. Happy ending.

Touch by aggressivewhenstartled (T, 1.8k). Both John and Sherlock are having a bad day. My favorite line: Sherlock had been a ball of snapping, squirming eels the entire afternoon. They work it out.

Post-TAB, settling of the dust by thosewhowant (E, 12k) is a lovely, angsty johnlock. They get together but John abruptly leaves and doesn't immediately return. Sherlock fights his addiction and learns to cope. Happy ending.
