familiarity, the lack thereof, and the only way it could have ended.
the thing is, ultrakill is a very diegetic game. near everything, from the style meter to the bottomless arsenal to the shitass graphics themselves, are explained in some way by some in-universe fact.
so, what with violence and the implication that V1 was designed to counter earthmovers
what with 7-4 and the fact that it is a culmination of this implication
i wonder. when V1 looked up at that earthmover, did it know, with whatever passes for instinct in a machine, exactly what to do? and if it did, then, how is this conveyed to the player?
diegetic as the game is, how does it engineer a situation in which the player, themselves, knows exactly what they have to do?
the biggest factor, i think, is the fact that the earthmover's health bar appears the moment you lay eyes (or camera, or whatever) on it, and it does not leave until you have finally killed this colossus.
but this factor is much more subtle than it appears at first glance. yes, big honkin' boss healthbar on screen for the entire level, what more to it. there's a good deal more, it turns out.
first off- this is the shortest leadup by far to any bossfight in the game. you slide through a single vent, and you are greeted with benjamin right out in the open. even P-1, devoid of any other hazards as it is, gives you a long trek down the spinal staircase before you reach the flesh prison. 7-4 has none of it. you enter the level, you enter the stage, and there you have it. you know exactly what you are up against right from the outset, and it's not quite a feeling of familiarity but it tells you exactly what you have to do. which is the point of this all, isn't it?
7-4 is also... not a bossfight! it is a full level! it is a full level framed as a bossfight. the health bar frames this full complete level as a bossfight.
and on one hand, this is not new news. on the other hand, i think this is the crux of it. the thing is, most bossfights are near-to-entirely new. you do not know how the boss acts. you do not know their attack patterns. you do not know their capabilities. you are learning something new. levels, though, you have done a thousand times over and so the player knows how they need to play through this bossfight in a way that is not quite present with any other boss in the game.
the content of the level is new, of course, because that's how it goes. but you know the motions. you have done this for two acts prior, you know the motions. you know exactly what to do.
also! this level does not exist in a vacuum. what i am saying is this: the rest of violence layer shifts its storytelling and its tone and even its graphics. it is something completely new in contrast to the rest of the game. 7-4, though, returns to environments and graphics more akin to what you have experienced before, bringing you back to familiarity and again knowing what to do here in a way the rest of violence hasn't let the player experience.
one more thing about this level: it plays directly into expectations. which is something that the rest of the game actually does not tend to do.
the game, at base, is just not a typical FPS. it gives you movement like a roguelite or a platformer, it takes guns you expect to know the mechanics of and goes utterly wild with how far the archetype can be changed.
in a smaller scope, here is a comparison of the earthmover and the corpse of king minos as two separate colossal bosses foreshadowed in similar ways. and i mean, minos's bossfight isn't unprecedented in other works. but i think the thing that matters here is that you are not, in fact, the underdog as is the case with so many other bosses of its ilk. riven of many voices, destiny 2, similar bossfight similar scale. you are hiding from her you are a fireteam of many you are triumphing over a dragon larger than life. project gestalt, madness project nexus, you are pulling out every stop you can to take down something so far over your head (both literally and metaphorically). corpse of king minos- V1 looks up, stands its ground, and parries his god damn fist.
and the thing is, the earthmover plays into a different expectation, but it's playing into an expectation nonetheless. you look at this thing and you climb it and you dismantle it from within, like you have done in many games prior. you know what your goal is from the moment you see that healthbar and you hook onto the conspicuously placed hookpoints that tell you- you will climb this machine; you will fight your way up to whatever its core is and you will kill it. you play through the entire level with this expectation and you get exactly this expectation. you destroy its core and it begins a countdown, and so very many games have countdowns before the collapse of whatever level you have just beaten, and you know exactly what you have to do.
i don't know. i love diegetic storytelling. i love this level.
it's just familiarity, i think. this level runs off familiarity. it gives you, the player, things and tropes and designs you are familiar with. it signals to you that you should know what to do, and it lets you do exactly what you expect to do.
if i were any more cheesy i could absolutely end this by restating something about the only way it could've ended, but uh. i am not that cheesy. this time.
aw crud now i don't know how to end this oh well goodbye then

bedtime
NOTE: stä'noli should be stolä'ni, that was a pretty rudimentary mistake and I'm not really sure what was going on in my brain when I wrote it but 😅 maybe i'll fix it on the image later but i can't be bothered right this minute, i'm already up way later than I should be as is (have an early day tomorrow)
Further language notes/rambling under the cut!
"wait, isn't Jake supposed to be spelled Tsyeyk in Na'vi?" Yes it is! And if I'd given that line to a monolingual Na'vi speaker I would've spelled it that way. BUT Neytiri is bilingual and does not pronounce it "Tsyeyk" (I mean, technically she doesn't say "Jake" either, it's more like "Zheyk" but w/e). So for her specifically I keep the j. I suppose at that point I could've just kept the English spelling completely, but leaving silent letters at the end like that makes things weird in written Na'vi given all the grammatical endings that can be applied (not that that matters in this comic because they weren't needed for the line but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Speaking of Jake, writing Na'vi dialogue for him is fun to me because he's not a native speaker which means I'm free to give him all sorts of beginner habits and/or mistakes, especially given that by his own admission he struggled learning the language. However, since I'm working within a pretty broad time frame, I had to remind myself that he wouldn't be a beginner forever.
I bring this up because there are two aspects of Jake's dialogue here that I was going to point out as...well, not wrong, but as more "English-y" habits I'd headcanoned he might hang on to...but on further reflection changed my mind because I realized that at the time of this comic he's been living with the Omatikaya for nearly ten years and would be pretty much fluent. I still left it written that way but am no longer headcanoning that that's ~just how he talks~ at this point in his life. After all, if I'm conscious of these habits after just two years of studying the language as a casual hobby, is it really believable that he'd be clinging to them after nearly a decade of full daily immersion, even with his self-admitted struggle with language learning? 😅
Anyways, for the sake of rambling about my hobby regardless, one of these aspects was using SVO word order, like English. Na'vi is a free-word-order language, so SVO is valid, but most Na'vi speakers are not going to stick to it exclusively. I think Jake, like many native-English-speaking learners, may have relied on this word order earlier on because that's just how his brain has been wired to process information, but at this point I think just by sheer exposure he'd have broken out of any strict adherence to it, intentional or otherwise.
The other thing is concerning possessive. The standard Na'vi grammatical ending for possessive is -yä. But Na'vi grammar also includes a concept called inalienable possession, which refers to things that are intrinsically yours and cannot be given away. What exactly qualifies as inalienable varies between languages that have such a concept, but with Na'vi it's most commonly seen with body parts. Inalienable possession can be marked with -yä, but there is a slight preference to mark it with the topical, -ri, instead. So, compare:
Peyä mehinam lu ngim. His legs are long. Pori mehinam lu ngim. His legs are long (lit. "concerning him, the legs are long")
Both of these are considered acceptable, but the -ri version is considered just slightly "better" (for lack of a better term).
You'll notice that Jake uses peyä instead of pori here; this was because the peyä structure is a more direct equivalent to the English construction, so it's pretty common for new learners to use it instead of -ri. And again it's not wrong, so it's not exactly a mistake per se. So it seemed like a reasonable "Englishy-but-still-technically-correct" habit for Jake to hang on to. And I do still think that may well have been in the case...in his earlier years 😅
soooo yeah. I will still probably be giving Jake some of those speaking habits in comics and such that take place only 2-3 years after A1, but once you get to around 10 years like this one...yeah I think it'll make more sense to just write his dialogue like that of any other fluent Na'vi-speaking character lol

what are some of the nuances and differences between your character’s voices and which ones do you enjoy writing more because of it?
I like writing all of them for different reasons; it just tends to be a matter of who's easier to write.
Chamomile's cheerful and also caring. They're the character I project my rambling to. They're super fun to write but hard when my brain can't do words.
Pori has a natural flatness to her tone so I try to make her sound as blunt as possible. She doesn't care about being rude, but also she tends to fear showing how she feels. She doesn't like to be vulnerable and when she admits to needing help, that's when you know that 1: she's at her wits end and/or 2: she's really out of it.
Torrent has a very specific pattern to their spelling quirks and it's fun to write; so much so I sometimes have trouble turning off the switch and end up spelling things Torrent's way when I write anything else lol. The inspiration for their speech patterns is from... OK anyone watch the failboat? Do you remember his Minecraft videos from his early days and how there was a character called "purple shep"? That's one of the inspirations for Torrent and sort of how I imagine their posts would sound when read out loud (except with a higher pitch).
Indigo's a fun character. They enjoy being silly and they're easy to write in an "online" setting, because they write like your average shitposter. They're a prankster, but not a troublemaker. They do things out of wanting to cheer people up and make them laugh. Their tone tends to be really lax when it's not. They try to pass off as being carefree but they have anxiety and ptsd. They'd have a panic attack and then go "Oh it's no big deal". They like to say things that confuse people sometimes.
As for the main Anomaly Sanctum characters:
Tero tends to be very formal. They have a very "this isn't my first language but I'm trying to speak it properly" kind of energy about their speaking. But their tone is very excitable. They're very passionate about their job.
Zula is also carefree but more in an assertive way. Think Amethyst from Steven Universe in the way that she speaks (but not how her physical voice sounds).
Head Coordinator is a fuckin fruit. He revels in being clever and smart. People wouldn't expect him to come from a genuine place with starting the sanctuary if they knew his identity (hint: he's a canon character!), but he is genuine. I hope to reveal more of his backstory in the way that I have.

Colors That Run Highlights 59
viva la revolution
In the wake of their victory over Shouscylla, the party, well, partied and drank to their success at the newly-liberated Oasis open bar. Calypso happily reunited with Fea and spent the remainder of the evening uncaring of her scantily-clad state. Valor on the other hand returned to her armor, and then everyone's favorite hole-filling man Teagan showed up. The Oasis population collectively swooned.
Tumblr media
Teagan accepted ownership of the Oasis and offered the party to join in; they could be co-owners and would draw income from it remotely. The party considered this, though Kattie was the only one that engaged in any sort of negotiations, and then on Teagan's generous suggestion, headed up to rifle through Shouscylla's office. Avi found the keys to all the office's locked places, but did not share this discovery with Calypso, who set about picking the lock of a large trunk. Avi found some clothes and two fishbone-hilted daggers, and Calypso found a big ol' pile of money, which she left for someone else to sort through and distribute, mindful of her contract. Meanwhile, Valor raided the room she and Calypso had stayed in, much like one does a hotel room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calypso made sure that Avi did sun and water Fea in her absence, and then Fea offered to take the two of them up to the surface. Calypso reacted to this prospect much like dog hearing the 'w' word, but then, due to being beat to shit, she promptly fell asleep up there (Fea holding her like a Greek statue). Also Fea tried to water walking ring her way up through the Oasis's ceiling, but Calypso protested because she didn't want to bang her horns on the ceiling like that.
More on point, Valor called Luna via Sending Stone, presumably checking in about their respective missions. In the morning, Calypso went on a quest to find some gifts for Slim and Teresa, but was unable to find what she wanted. Then the group left Pory and began their four-day journal to Quam, where they would meet up with Luna and Gale and their crew. The group took the opportunity to fill Kattie in on what she had missed, and they explained Kattie's situation to Avi. Kattie also started making noise about the whole Avi freeing Pale Night thing, but Calypso defended him, saying that he hadn't known that's what would happen when he touched the sarcophagus.
Once they were close to the edge of Quam's lake, a squirrel appeared before them, bearing a scroll of paper. Kattie pulled japes on the party and claimed that "courier squirrels" were a common thing in Harmonce.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The letter was from Luna, and it explained the next steps of the plan. Gale would raise hell outside in Quam, while Luna and the party would go inside the Elements' chambers and beat their asses. It was also warned that the Elements' are demigods, and the fight would probably be hard.
Once the Breakfast Club arrived at the shore, they reunited with their genasi girls (and discovered the squirrel had been someone in Wildshape). Apparently Luna and Gale (and co.) had sown the seeds of revolution in the Earth District with the fed-up children there-- utilizing pranks, of all things. With the help of the air genasi powers to avoid drowning on the way down to the domed city of Quam (Kattie didn't understand everyone's need to breathe), the group sank allll the way down.
Tumblr media
Before bringing hell, the group went on a shopping trip. This time around Calypso found what she had been looking for-- a seahorse belt buckle for Slim and a mermaid doll for Teresa-- and packed them away into her things securely. Kattie and Valor went looking for spell components. Avi, accompanied by Fea, went shopping for some heavy armor-- or at least armor that he could physically manage. Avi rambled happily to Fea along the way and she dutifully listened. Fea had Avi try on a chestplate, but the weight of it brought him to the floor.
Tumblr media
Valor claimed to see a bill sitting on the top of the Elements' grand hall and singing, but it's more likely she was glimpsing beyond the fourth wall or something. Then again, maybe that's yet another thing that's totally normal in Harmonce... 🙄
Tumblr media
Inside the capitol building there were four main hallways, decorated like each of the four elements, naturally. After some deliberation (and being reminded of the Elite Four chambers in Pokemon games) the party proceeded down the first hall at the left. Fea used her ability to sense lifelights to count the number of people behind closed doors, and busted out her glass-blowing tools to seal these doors closed-- preventing those within from getting out to assist the Elements once that encounter began. Fea was rather proud of Calypso for that making the suggestion. Eventually the party was turned around by guards, who luckily fell for Luna's ruse that the group was aiming for the Memorial Hall.
The next hall the group went down was the Fire one, and it contained a large set of doors that opened to another grand hall (once Kattie used Misty Step to go past the door and unlock it-- clever). The party was then faced by the most grand set of doors they'd encountered thus far... the Elements were within, it was clear.
Calypso, being the group's Professional Door Knocker, stepped up and knocked on the door. She dropped her hand afterward, keeping it curled tightly into a fist.
Tumblr media
A woman made of wind currents answered the door, and had the time to say about five words before Calypso punched her directly in the face. Avi immediately cast Beacon of Hope on the party, and Kattie cast Heroism on Fea. The door opened wider to reveal the other three Elements, who mobilized quickly and angrily.
For her part, the Air lady (Ira) spent the beginning of the combat just, baffled. Can't imagine why. But her ability to deflect attacks with her body of currents (and redirect them to hit nearby targets) was dangerous. Water (Riven) proved hard to deal with, as his liquid body could capture weapons and pull them from their wielders, as is what happened to Luna and Jericho. Earth (Leif) was a little more straightforward, using thorns to strike from a distance. And Fire (Feera) made her way around the room's large round conference table and tossed miniature fire balls before summoning a fire elemental. Who knew fighting four demigods at once would be so dangerous?
Avi leaned hard into the healer role, keeping everyone afloat with Mass Cure Wounds, but he also slid a fishbone dagger over to Jericho, seeing as Riven yoinked his sword away. Valor targeted Leif, and Fea remained on Ira. Kattie moved to the center of things and tried to cast Destructive Wave, but Feera.... Counterspelled it. Twice.
Calypso had originally been squared up with Ira (who kinda kicked her ass), but once she noticed Feera throwing fire, she hauled ass up to her to keep her off of Fea, who is quite flammable. On a lighter note, Valor's player insisted on doing a Wisconsin accent on each of Valor's turns. The DM copied this as well.
Tumblr media
The fun side effect of fighting Feera was burning them with fire on each strike. Calypso's fire resistance softened those hits, but Feera also did this thing where the burning of her fire caused incredible pain to Calypso, as if pouring alcohol into an open wound. Calypso appeared to have successfully stunned Feera, but it turns out... Feera's immune to being stunned! Fun. But at least Kattie managed to dispel Feera's summoned elemental.
Tumblr media
Soon however, Fea caused a small halt in the fighting. She held off on attacking a still somewhat baffled Ira and spoke to her, trying to appeal to her and convince her that the people of Harmonce were suffering-- that's why this fighting was happening. Ira didn't seem to understand her, and said that as the Elements, their job was to oversee the land of Harmonce, and that everything that happens beyond that was merely the consequences of the citizens. Ira was not concerned.
Tumblr media
The discussion took place over a few rounds of combat-- Leif was the only other Element that appeared to be given pause by Fea's appeal to pathos. Ira was ultimately not receptive, and came to the conclusion that she would not be manipulated by a child of darkness. Calypso was mad.
Tumblr media
The combat then continued in earnest. At one point Kattie was about to move up to assist Calypso in fighting Feera, but decided not to at the last moment, and instead gave Calypso some bardic inspiration. Ira, turning cruel, countered Fea's continued pleas with a threat toward Calypso: "surely the one you love so much needs air to live."
Ira then reached out a hand in Calypso's direction and attempted to pull the air from her lungs, to suffocate her. But thanks to that bardic inspiration from earlier, Calypso made the saving throw and avoided being asphyxiated.
Tumblr media
Valor then put a pause in her hostility against Leif to speak to Ira (all of the Elements, really). She communicated much of the same sentiment as Fea, but suggested that perhaps, if they would not heed a child of darkness, they would heed a child of Celestia instead. She did so knowing the Elements' connection to Celestia and hoped to leverage it. She used her inspiration, and...
Tumblr media
...end of session.
good shit tbh

Pori comics festival 2018
went well. Could and should have had more audience but that will be next time.
Had fun with friends, did a sequel to interviewing Tuomas Myllylä (Ok admitted interview is leading false) on his comics and rushed him too to malecomic/dudecomic panel that went well.
Despite the neme, it was not all male panel as the idea came from female comic creator and panels leader who came third in comic contest held under pseudonyms because the judges of the contest felt that while the comic she had sent was really good it would be time for a woman to win that year. So they picked a swedish male comic artist under pseudonym instead of her...
I rambled on about Southern Bastards, Pounded, Preacher, Judge Dredd and other underrated gems like How To Make Money Like A PornStar. My small, but loud contribution no one asked for.
Petri Hiltunen had great talk on historical comics as usual.
And preparty (or midparty) and afterparty were grand. Fun with friends and I think I killed few bottles of whiskey, some rum, loads of beer and was wasted.
And got ideas for some comics, naturally.

Historia miasta
Wymuszało to specyficzny sposób rozładunku statków. Ta przygodowa powieść, będąca mieszaniną historii i fikcji, stanowi doskonały wstęp do poznania historii Hiszpanii.
Bodźcem do niego były Wystawy Światowe Expo, dwukrotnie zorganizowane w Barcelonie – w 1888 i 1929 roku.
Barcelona to miasto, będąca jednym z największych miast organizującym międzynarodowe spotkania kongresowe. Znajdują się tutaj m.in. Borsa de Barcelona (giełda papierów wartościowych), centrum handlu World Trade Center Barcelona czy jedno z największych centrów wystawienniczych w Europie Fira de Barcelona.
Do głównych atrakcji turystycznych możemy zaliczyć m.in.:
Wyróżniają go dwie kolumny weneckie.
La Rambla – najchętniej odwiedzana ulica miasta, łączy Plac Kataloński i port.
La Boqueria – hala targowa z XIX wieku, czynna do dziś.
Sagrada Familia
Ta bazylika mniejsza, której pełna nazwa w języku polskim brzmi Świątynia Pokutna Świętej Rodziny, to numer jeden wszystkich wycieczek do Barcelony.
Pierwszą kryptę ukończono w 1889 roku, a rok później Gaudi przedstawił szkice całej świątyni.

Łysej Góry, a z sześćdziesięciu działek gotowych do zamieszkania powstało jedynie pięć budynków.
Dziś jest on atrakcją turystyczną, a do najciekawszych miejsc należą:
Brama wejściowa z kutego żelaza i dwa pawilony – postawiona w latach 1901 – 1902
Tzw. Teatr Grecki – taras nad Salą Kolumnową, wzdłuż którego biegnie słynna, wykładana mozaiką ławka.
Casa-Museu Gaudi – dawny dom Antonio Gaudiego.
Stadion FC Barcelony
#gallery-0-23 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 20%; } #gallery-0-23 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
#gallery-0-24 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-24 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
W Barcelonie miejsc do zwiedzania i oglądania jest naprawdę dużo. Jedna wizyta nie wystarczy, żeby wszystko obejrzeć, przeżyć, by posmakować katalońskiego życia.

"Aren't you friends with a ah...Poris? What's the dynamic there?"
“Poris? H-He’s just a friend who’s helped me through some tough times…he’s actually the one who introduced me to House Reinhardt. I was visiting Stormwind and was a bit lost…then I- heh, quite literally bumped into the giant. Maybe that sounds somewhat cliche, but that’s what happened. He’s…s-scary, I’ll admit…but under his exterior he’s a kind person. He showed me where I needed to go, and made conversation with me, thus I learned about House Reinhardt…I-I feel bad though, because I know I’m not the best person for conversation…speaking of which, I hope I’m not rambling! Sorry…u-uhm…that’s basically it though…”
(( @poriss for mention!

Any day its cotton! - visiting PB
File photos: from long back - courtesy a textile shop in pondy bazaar :)
Today was a colourful day for me - sis and me embarked on a shopping expedition to regular stores in pondy bazaar (hence forward known as PB). Picked up some really cool cotton fabrics - like the ones in pics featured above - for skirt/pant tops and the kameezes for salwar suits - on the whole a satisfying buy :) choosing from the myriad varieties of fabrics will make any shopaholic’s head spin - there were ikkats, kalamkaaris, chettinad.. all my favourites.. making my “colour’s choice” (incidentally name of the store) difficult. It just takes a small step to personalize your wardrobe by taking the initiative to select your fabric and give it for tailoring in the pattern that you like and suits you. Believe me the results are worth every penny.
Digressing from this topic to the most favourite topic - “food” we managed to have a quick cuppa - filter coffee from balajee bhavan - our favourite haunt in PB - though we gave the usual snack there a miss - again digressing - do not know how I missed to add this place in my earlier latest post (will add now) - specialty here is a dish called “kola urundai” - belongs to the bonda family I guess - which me and my sis drool for whenever we visit PB though it is available only on one day a week - I think it is a “Thursday special”
other regular haunts in PB include
1) ambika appalam - buy different varieties of chips, pickles and ofcourse appalams authentic to kerala
2) corner pori kadalai shop and magazine shop
3) vadilal icecream thallu vandi near brilliant tutorials
4) now gone pavement shops selling anything under the sun - I was and still continue to be a junk jewellery fanatic
5) other end corner stationery shop three star
6) good old bata
7) rathna steel stores prominently in the centre
8) ever coming up textile shops
8) missing now - maruti sweet shop, krishna photo studio, salaam provision stores
9) lot of fancy stores - five star, twin brothers etc..
Getting to PB itself was a nice experience. Those days when I was back in school mom and me and sis either used to take a rick (manual one - the tricycle types) or simply enjoy a long walk through the beautiful tree lined venkatanarayana road from our house in nandanam.
Talking about venkatanarayana road, that used to be the road I used to take for my library visits in usman road as well. My monthly library allowance was 30 bucks and I had to ration it well to properly distribute it between comics and novels :)
This road had important landmarks all the way through - there used to be a supermarket kinda shop called royal shoppe or something  I guess - then there was a provision store called anandha stores in the middle - then of course the BB (basketball court) where my brothers used to play and the park opposite to it
Extending from usman road to panagal park to ranganathan street - I am clearly rambling :))) here - but you see - you will not get the entire picture of this neighbourhood if I leave without mentioning these areas… my entire childhood spent in this vicinity.. if you want to ever see life bustling - it is this place for sure
the big landmarks in panagal park are the nalli, kumaran and the like for those who shop silk.. for me yes you guessed it right - another corner shop called nic-nac - for foodies who want to take a snack bite in between shopping - samosa here it too good!!
ranganathan street - has changed face many times over - though the single unchanged thing is the crowd that keeps coming here!!! landmarks here are the entry juice shops, the mambalam railway station at the dead end and the vegetable peddlers in the adjoining street - these are pretty much unchanged - so is the ambika appalam somewhere in the middle.. then the rest of the place is just simply overflowing with textile shops and tailoring units changing now and then with the trends.. yet you still feel nostalgic about the whole circle - after all childhood memories will be evergreen even if times keep changing..
long day today, good night folks
thanks to my bro for the bday treat today :)
